How do teams work? Teams are a way for us to organize the final zine. We want you to think of the characters you want to create for and then you decide where they fit best. At sign ups you select what teams you want to be on. At the end of the event when you submit your work you will tell us what team you want your work displayed with. Its all up to you!

Do you have any lore about the things with faces stuff you've been putting out? I adore all their designs (especially the siblings you posted most recently) and would love to know if you have anything going on w them

The things with faces is something I like to play with in-between all the comic making, something just for me. Of course I'm itching to make it into a comic but with the workload I have now, I don't think it's something I can do.

I've been drawing exclusively animal comics for years now, and sometimes I really would want to work with something that doesn't need to be so wholesome all the time. I wanna draw people.. . . holding hands... kissing.... I miss expressing the wonders of humanity in the way animals can't, but one BIG problem! Drawing humans! It takes so long, oftentimes I get no joy from it. Even putting faces on these things has me weeping three tears at minimum, but at least they can kiss now, and it makes sense for them to have fully human minds. I feel this is the furthest I can go before the joy sours.

I've been building a little world where the denizens are all sphinx-like things who are more animal-bodied humans than human-faced animals. Animal-faced creatures are feral, used as livestock and game. This universe has likely been formed by scraps from other universes merging, bringing weird magic, involved gods and humble humans together and molding them into something new. Humanity is sought after feature. Maybe they have a statue of it somewhere.

There's different kinds of sphinxes. Some can grow and morph their horns, some are born with hands (respected crafters and medics), wings (harpies, traditional sphinxes), third eyes (the most in tune with magic, can switch eyeballs with others), and more. These two are the horned kind, heirs to a throne. The horned kind is believed to be the best and most just leaders, were it just for their natural crown or some event proving it in the past.

I have a little story in mind for them, but like I said, I likely won't have the time and energy to juggle a third project by myself. And I don't wanna draw castles or play with 3D, human faces are hard too. 💔

Who are you?

I'm Kes Beacon and creative pursuits come out of my ears.

What do you do?

I am, most consistently, an author; I am usually an artist; often a fibre crafter; intermittently a programmer(ish) or baker; occasionally a woodworker, calligrapher, poet, essayist, photographer, &c &c &c.

Unfortunately, writing is one of these things that works best offline without an audience, so it's a little hard to bring you folks in to the fold.

My novels are:

Oathbreaker, a science fantasy novel about love, trauma, narrative, and the collapse of civilisations. The greatest space knight of their court, Ithye Xallen, finds their fate-winged swoop towards the ending of their quest interrupted by the strange arrival of a person from faraway skies and the intrusion of unprecedented doom. Complete, unsold as yet. (Enquiries to my agent, John Baker @ Bell Lomax Moreton. You never know :P!)

Sigil's Resolve (WIP), a scifi novel about identity, ecology, zombie capitalism, and giant fuckin mechs. Heig, one of the last handful of pilots working the mech shows in the dying seaside town of Zhelkirk, thinks she's holding it together. She's really, really not.

I'm also working on:

Gun: Hell of a Place, a comic about an outlaw hunting their quarry in a strange, burned land;

An animal companion generator, for all your cute creature and majestic mount needs;

Getting you an actual picture of the finished corset I made;

The next installment of Thought Provoked.

… I like to think that there is one thing that both Rory and Blaze absolutely agree on and can bond over, even if Rory will only hesistantly admit to it:

They are both huge “Sora, Warrior if the sea” nerds. Don’t get me wrong, they both understand the comic is marine propaganda and they don’t fall for that, but as soon as their father is done going trough the world economic journal they can’t wait to snatch it out of his hands to see how Sora survived last weeks cliffhanger. If they ever sat down with Law for whatever reason they would take HOURS discussing the plot and characters. Blaze is a fan of the general action and the characters and may or may not have bawled his eyes out at emotional moments in the story more than once. Rory is more of a story analyzer and theory crafter. He’d be the type of person who would do powerscaling and pitting characters against each other all the time, but it would be increasingly obvious that he massively favors Sora, because he wins in every argument he makes. He also may or may not have written fanfic, but you can’t prove anything. If you could he would make sure you’re wearing a fashionable pair of concrete shoes at the bottom of the ocean and destroy all the evidence.

Skye in turn has taken one look at it and… doesn’t get the enthusiasm. This is clearly marine propaganda and it’s also just not that well written and - “Well actually Skye if you’d bother to look just a bit closer you’d realize that Sora is actually a heavily intriguing character that-“ “BUT HE HAS A SEAGULL FRIEND!!! AND A ROBOT!” “And also the way he attacks is a heavy subversion on the usual tropes you’d usually encounter in a story like this-“ “AND HE PUNCHES THE BAD GUYS!!” Skye no longer argues about Sora, Warrior of the sea with these two chucklefucks

The boys would TOTALLY bond over nerdy things. They would... Be reluctant to admit it but you could find them be in awe seing their uncle Franky doing SUPER cyborg things.

Also the idea of Law meeting the twins and bonding with them made me kick my feet and giggle so loud I HAD to drew it. This could totally happen aside current redbomb episode since it takes place in Sabaody... So for me it's canon in the AU 🤧

I think Law and Rory would get along pretty well. Mayyyybe Law would be the one to give Rory the idea of getting hand / knuckles tattoos, later... Maybe Law would a bit recognize himself in this grumpy nerdy ass with a soft spot for cute things... SO MANY POTENTIAL.

in every fandom there comes a time when you have to ask yourself, ok but what classes would these characters be if they were in D&D

overlong headcanons/design notes under the cut:

I based this AU off my rudimentary knowledge of D&D and it’s classes, but I’m taking creative liberties and it can be thought of as just a general fantasy rpg-style thing. Ended up being a mix match of comics and MCU but it’s an AU so hey it’s fine right lol

KAMALA - Sorcerer/Monk

Arguably one of the hardest to actually decide a class for?? I’m imagining her powers here as more akin to those she has in the MCU show; they’re something innate to her, passed down through her bloodline (and possibly unlocked by some event or heirloom as in the case of the TV show). I think the way she fights would be something closer to a monk, though? After awakening her powers, she journeys around helping people in the same way as she becomes Ms Marvel, both on her own and with the party. 

Kamala’s design is based pretty much entirely off the Mystic Marvel design (originally I believe from Champions, also in the Avengers game)! I saw this design and my brain instantly went brrrr because it basically combines my two fave marvel heroes (Dr Strange and Kamala)!! I changed a few parts of the design, and simplified the shirt a bit. I think it suits Kamala well for a fantasy AU - even in the main comics she wears an outfit that’s comfy and easy to move in!

NAKIA- Sorcerer/Cleric

Since Nakia is the only sensible one here, it made sense for her to be the (begrudging, probably) healer. I think it suits her personality well too though! I’m imagining here that her powers are innate (like a sorcerer), but she just uses healing magic the most (like a cleric). More similar perhaps to something like the cleric class in Fire Emblem Awakening, where clerics are often religious but their powers aren’t something directly conferred by the gods. 

Nakia’s design is based entirely off of her Storm Sage look in Ms Marvel (2015) #38 (aka the one where the gang gets isekai’d) Once again simplified it a little and softened some of the shapes (since it’s more of a villain look in the comic, but she’s obvs a good guy here) 

BRUNO - Wizard/Artificer

Bruno’s outfit is also partly inspired by #38 (esp for colour scheme), but I mainly just did my own thing for what I thought he should look like in a fantasy AU ahahah. Gave him a long coat because if there’s one thing I love more than wizards, it’s wizards with long coats lmao

To me the D&D wizard class is much more the ‘study and research’ side of magic so it think it works well for the scientifically inclined Bruno. The thirst for knowledge and hubris (all the benchmarks of a good wizard character, really) are also very fitting for him, I think..!!

He’s a natural prodigy of magic and manages to get accepted to a prestigious and exclusive magic school but is kicked out after The Accident. Leaves to find somewhere else that’s willing to teach him since he can’t accept the idea of not learning magic. Meets Kwezi and the rest plays out much as it does in the comics

His prosthetics are powered with some kind of Magical Rock (call it a magic substitute for vibranium), and made by Kwezi. I’m undecided whether they’re grafted onto his arm/leg or it’s a whole Full Metal Alchemist situation but maybe a bit of both? The arm also acts as a conduit of sorts for casting his own magic (hence where the artificer class comes in). As he makes all sorts of stuff for Kamala in the comics/show I think him having the ability to craft magical items also fits well. Probably learns that magic from Kwezi. Which brings us to...

KWEZI - Artificer

Another magical prodigy, but I see Kwezi as more of a support type to Bruno’s spellcaster. The embodiment of chaotic good. I think he’d be mainly a crafter of magical items (sort of like Olruggio in Witch Hat Atelier?) 

His background in this AU is the same as in the comics, and him and Bruno go adventuring a bit themselves before joining up with Kamala and co eventually. I think he’d be pretty sheltered when it comes to travelling outside fantasy-Wakanda, especially compared to Bruno, so hijinks ensue. (Side note, but I absolutely adore that contrast when it comes to Kwezi & Bruno’s dynamic, I’m so in love with them both)

The green cloak-wrap is inspired by his formal outfit in Ms Marvel (2015) #30, and the harem pants are from #29. I think comfy, practical clothes suit Kwezi, and I like that the colour scheme for him is a nice contrast with Bruno! 

KAREEM - Rogue

Probably the easiest class to decide on because really what else could it be?? I’m undecided on whether Kareem should have his origin from the MCU show or the comics for this AU - personally I prefer comics but I do think a secret society sort of thing would work well for a fantasy AU so I’m leaning a bit more towards that perhaps.

His design is a mix of MCU, comics and my own take on it to make it a little more fantasy/rogue-like.  

KAMRAN - Sorcerer

Probably the only one here (except maybe Kareem) who’s primarily based off his MCU appearance rather than the comics. I see him as being initially a bit more of a bad guy than in the show though, a sort of misguided villain who eventually ends up joining the party (see: Zuko in ATLA)

He’s grown up with the Clandestines (probably some kind of cult here) and he generally believes in their mission, so it takes a little more for him to turn on them. As a sorcerer his powers manifest suddenly and he doesn’t understand how to control them at first. The Clandestines probably want him to use his powers to their ends, and that, along with run-ins with Kamala gets him questioning whether he should continue to follow them or turn away from the only family he’s ever known...

Kamran’s design was probably the hardest to figure out, since he only really has appearances in regular clothes, and no canon alternate designs to work off of (like Nakia/Bruno/Zoe). In the end I was thinking of the Clandestines and what they might wear in such a setting? The blue colour scheme is based off the jacket he wears in ep 6 (probably his most iconic MCU look) and also his coat/scarf look in Ms Marvel (2014) #13. I don’t think I captured Kamran’s likeness very well here but his outfit actually turned out to be one of my faves, so swings and roundabouts hahah

ZOE - Fighter

I’m imagining Zoe in this AU is the daughter of some lowly noble family (a big shot in the town that her and the gang are from, not so much elsewhere). After a run in with some bandits where she’s saved by Kamala, she resolves that she needs to get stronger. Not the strongest nor the most skillful fighter, but she’s trying her best!!

Zoe’s design is inspired by her fantasy look in #38 (the pink tunic in particular), but I changed and added some details to it. Her cloak I swapped out for the pink scarf, as inspired by her stint as Ms Marvel!

BECKY - Paladin-->Warlock & JOSH - ???

The actual bad guys of this AU ahahah. I’m imagining here that the events of Civil War II play out pretty much the same in this AU as in the comics. Becky starts out as a paladin with generally good intentions, but when she crosses a line she gets disowned (is that the right word?? probably not) by her god. Unable to deal with it, she turns instead to darker powers, making a pact and becoming a warlock. 

I haven’t really thought about what class Josh would be... maybe a fighter as well (to match Zoe?), but I’m imagining him as a sort of mysterious Black Knight type figure, hence the you haven’t unlocked this character yet question marks lmao

Their designs are based entirely off their lockdown/discord appearances, just adapted into fantasy-armour style. I think the designs carried over really well, actually (definitely helped by the excellent colour schemes!)

And there you have it LOL I have no idea if I’m gonna do anything more with this AU but just wanted to share the brainrot, so if you got this far THANKS..... any thoughts/suggestions for other characters I should add are always welcome!!

So since Matau is growing on me and I understand his character a little more, I saw somewhere that he, like Vakama, also has a bit of anxiety and self-worth/confidence issues. Where Vakama's anxieties come from his not feeling good enough to be a Toa due to not wanting to have ever been one in the first place, and from his guilt at Lhikan's capture, Matau's anxiety is more about keeping up "appearances"

This is more interpretation and personal experience(I may need to reread the books some more later), but Matau always doing reckless things in the name of "bravery" is an example of an "appearance," as he's trying to be a Toa the way he's SEEN Toa be: Brave, strong, always doing something dangerous, but still doing it while smiling. Add to that Matau is the wisecracking, comic relief of the group, always throwing jokes and keeping things upbeat, he's more or less set up an image of the Toa he wants to be seen as even if we or the Toa Metru don't know it:

The Toa Matau wants to be seen as someone brave, someone who sees danger and laughs, someone who can keep spirits high in the team. He also mainly just wants to be seen, noticed, KNOWN by all who see him, and he wants to be seen, noticed, and known as the image of himself he's trying to live up to

We don't know if Matau has ever WANTED to be a Toa, but I can imagine that seeing how loved and how much attention the Toa Mangai most likely received, Matau may have gotten a certain image of what a Toa is, HOW a Toa is. Upon becoming a Toa, he goes straight into making sure he IS that very image, that he fits the mold he made for himself

The way I can best put the type /version of "anxiety" Matau has is this:

Imagine having to ensure you are the one in the group that smiles, the one everyone knows as the "ray of sunshine," or the one that picks everyone else up. No one put this role or expectation on you. You put it on yourself and it's something that soon becomes second nature as you adapt and begin to really "live" in even if it's not really living

I'm not saying that we're not seeing the real Matau(if anything we see him more because this is his ideal version of himself, so to speak), but I can imagine that most of what we see of Matau is the image he's made for himself and a lot of his pride and vanity comes from this image

It's small moments where the "real" Matau starts to show, or more specifically how Matau reacts when he is not recognized as a Toa, or as the image of a Toa he made for himself. One such moment in question comes in the Coliseum scene in Legends of Metru Nui, when the false Dume turns the crowd against the Toa:

When Vakama tries to tell the crowd that the Dark Hunters took Toa Lhikan rather than the Toa, we see most of the Toa react, especially Matau, who has nothing to say and can only back away from the crowd as they call turn against him, believing the lie told about him

No quips

No trying to back Vakama and say they're innocent

Just silence

And other quiet moment is when we see him for a moment in the Vahki transport, as he, Nokama, and Vakama go to Po-Metru. As Nokama tells Vakama to have faith in being a Toa, Matau simply watches, not saying anything. It may be a "nothing" moment, but from looking at the scene again, Matau appears to be sitting in a similar position to Vakama, just with one knee up, and he only looks at Nokama and Vakama when Nokama says, "You will. Have faith," to Vakama having doubts about his being a Toa.

We don't know if Nokama and Matau even had a conversation before Nokama spoke with Vakama, but knowing Matau's little reaction in the scene happens and he's more or less back to himself after, I think that maybe Matau might have been dealing with feelings of, "If I can't be what I imagine a Toa to be, then am I even a Toa at all?" Maybe hearing what Nokama said and hearing Vakama's insecurities boosted him a little and helped pull him out of those feelings because he is more or less back to himself when in the crafter's village in Po-Metru

Am I saying Matau is also an anxiety coded character? A little bit. It isn't like Vakama, where it's easy to see and connect with. Where we know Vakama's anxiety very easily, Matau's is pretty masked, and I think it's meant to be like that because for Matau, acknowledging his own anxiety, or his feeling like he can't live up to the expectation he set yp for himself, is something he can't and probably doesn't want to do. It's a lot like a feeling of, "If I something right now or if I fall apart now, I won't be able to put myself back together again." I don't think it's that extreme in Matau's case, but I imagine it close to be

And that's been my TED talk on Matau. Sorry if some bits don't make sense. I'm beginning to realize I have something in common with Matau and I don't know how I feel about it😅

Fairy Eclipse and Lunar LOOK WHO’S BACK FROM THE DEAD! This was inspired by @ayyy-imma-ninja ‘s Fairy AU of Sun and Moon. She said it was okay to draw fan art so I did. She also said she might add Eclipse and Lunar in the mix at some point so I decided I would draw my idea of what I think they’d be like in the AU. My idea for Lunar is that he’s a crafter or tinker. Likes making things, which is good since he had to make a prosthetic for his wing so he could even fly again. The prosthetic uses Blue Jay feathers to fix the wing and allow flight. Prosthetic concept came from this: https://www.tumblr.com/oakwyrm/686507987588841472/disabled-tinker-bell-anyone?source=share Timid, often has nightmares. Eclipse often comforts him. Eclipse is more of the warrior type. Could decide if the nail he’s holding would be a spear or a sword of some sort so for now it’s just a sword. He’ll do anything to defend his little brother. I couldn’t see Eclipse being bad as a Fairy so made him a warrior. He blames himself for not being fast enough to save Lunar from getting badly injured and horribly breaking a part of his wing. Doesn’t get much sleep, always on edge expecting trouble. They are probably traveling a lot looking for a safe place to settle. Have a comic idea that they meet @ayyy-imma-ninja ‘s Fairy Sun and Moon either because of Lunar’s nightmares or they enter the brother’s hollow during a storm and the brothers are both there.  Probably won’t get around to drawing that anytime soon, but you never know.
