What I think the Batfam's love languages would be:

This is not necessarily canon, you can take this as the love languages of my personal versions of the characters if ya want-

Bruce Wayne -

How does he show his love?: I think that if you two were casually going out, seeing each other on occasion for a date but not actually officially dating or anything, he would show his love through giving gifts. I mean, it's the billionaire thing to do—just dump a bunch of money on you and let you buy stuff. Then when you started officially dating he would continue to give you gifts, but I also think he would use acts of service.. Whether that be dressing up as Batman and beating up someone who threatened you, or being Bruce Wayne and making your boss give you a promotion. Then if your relationship got extra serious, like you were moving into Wayne Manor serious, I think he would finally start to warm up to physical touch and would slowly get more touchy with you over time.

What type of love does he respond best to?: Quality time. Just having you around while he's doing mundane things, you sitting with him in the Batcave while he's working a case, going grocery shopping together. Depending on his mood he'll also respond well to words of affirmation, but if you catch him in the wrong mood he'll get annoyed and upset by them because he'll feel patronized.

Dick Grayson -

How does he show his love?: No matter what stage of the relationship, his biggest love language is always going to be acts of service. He's a people pleaser at heart, he loves doing things for others even if it's detrimental to him. If the two of you were casually going out I think that he'd use a lot of words of affirmation on you, just being really sweet to you in general. When you started officially dating he'd make an effort to spend as much quality time with you as possible and get a little more touchy, starting to get used to hugs, cuddling, sleeping in the same bed, etc. If you got extra serious he'd become much more comfortable with physical touch, and start to lay more heavily into his acts of service.

What type of love does he respond best to?: Words of affirmation—but only if you do it right. Dick, being the people pleaser that he is, lives for praise and being told that he's helpful and good. Words of affirmation in the sense of 'I'm proud of you', or 'You did great out there tonight,' work wonders for him. However, words of affirmation in the form of compliments about his physical appearance have an adverse affect if you're still early on in the relationship. After all, Dick gets his looks complimented a lot and most of the time it makes him uncomfortable. He'll feel like you're only looking at his body and not who he is as a person. However, he's more accepting to physical compliments when you get into a more serious relationship.

Jason Todd -

How does he show his love?: Well to be honest if you're casually going out, he.. Doesn't- I mean that early on, he has no real reason to believe that he should. After all, he's never had any experience with this sort of thing, and why would you ever want to date a literal crime boss/murderer? He thinks that you're totally a spy and that you're going to betray him or something. If you manage to progress to the officially dating stage, he'll start to open up just a tiny bit. He'll become a little more protective of you, making sure his goons won't attack you if you're out in Gotham late and 'taking care of' anyone who gives you trouble. He might get you a gift here and there, pay for dinner, but he'll still stay somewhat distant. And if you eventually manage to get to the serious stage, he will become incredibly attached, lots of quality time, lots of gifts, lots of acts of service, and SO much praise over any little thing you do.

What type of love does he respond best to?: Physical touch, but only if it's serious. To get through the first part of your relationship you pretty much just have to stick around and not be an ass, because he'll be absolutely flabbergasted that you want anything to do with him, but he'll eventually get used to it and become attached because you're the only person(that isn't the Batfam) who's been with him this long. But if it gets serious, he'll love physical touch. Hugs, cuddles, sleeping in the same bed, putting an arm around your shoulder, massaging your thighs.. Just touching you whenever he can.

Tim Drake -

How does he he show his love?: Quality time, and by quality time, I mean he stalks you. You won't know it, at least not until much later into the relationship, but if he actually likes you he'll stalk you from the beginning. Stalking your social medias, tracking your phone's location, watching you in the Batcave on the Gotham security footage. Maybe hacking into your security cams and watching you in your house/apartment if he's particularly lonely. Aside from that, early on he'll pay for dinner, buy you flowers, maybe get you some little trinkets that he finds cool.. As you start dating he'll start to help you with school/work, putting his smarts and skills to the test to help you out with things. He always seems to know when you need help, somehow? (It's the stalking). When you get serious he'll warm up to you fully and start just being his weird lil' self, no longer masking his odd behavior around you.

What type of love does he respond best to?: Physical touch(but usually only when he's sleepy), and words of affirmation. He doesn't mind physical touch usually, but it won't always do much for him except for when he's feeling sleep deprived, in which case he craves your warmth and touch. He especially needs the words of affirmation, because he's sort of lacking that in his life right now (Though, his family[-Damian lol] are trying hard to make up for that, they're working on it), and it makes him feel useful and wanted. And like his own person for once.

Damian Wayne -

How does he show his love?: In the first two stages of the relationship he won't really show that he cares, he might be a bit less aggressive to you then everyone else, but he's still not exactly the nicest. However, if you manage to get to a serious relationship, you'll have proved that you're actually there for him, and you'll notice a more dramatic change. He'll become much more open, start smiling more often, get a little more touchy, shower you with beautiful art he painted of you.. You were the one who helped him learn to be less violent, so by extension he's willing to rely on you.

What type of love does he respond best to?: Words of affirmation, because he has an ego that needs to be stroked. Even when you get serious and he becomes more open, Damian is still at his core a pretty narcissistic and arrogant guy, and he still acts on impulse thinking that he's better and smarter then any of his enemies. So, if you want him to be all flattered.. Just compliment his fighting skills.. Or, y'know, tell him how much better then Tim he is.

here i go again with "big brother dick grayson strikes again" prompts.

thinking of Dick probably helping his siblings on their first dates and offering to take them to the location.

Dick to Jason: Hey, Little Wing. I know you can take one of your motorcycles, but let me take you. You can just focus on being pretty.

Jason: Shut up, Dick. But, are you sure? I don't know why my hands feel a bit numb-

Dick, takes Jason's hands on his to warm them up and untighten the nerves there: It's okay. I got you. You're okay. It's going to be okay. Don't stress yourself out.

Jason: I know I fucked up many times, Dick. I don't want.. I don't know what to do if I fuck this up.

Dick, brings Jason closer: Shh. You won't, Jay. You're very smart and strong, and so so caring and you don't even realize it it. Ask the kids at the Alley, they idolize you. Roy adores you and everything you do. He knows who you are. And trust me, I'm not that bitter anymore of one of my best friends dating my younger brother.

Jason smiles which warms Dick's heart, making him smile too.

Dick: Plus, we wouldn't want Ollie to think that a Wayne cannot dress up and be romantic right?

Jason grins this time.

Dick to Tim: Timmy, I have a great idea! I'll drive you there. I know you're tired from work already. Just let me know which restaurant then you can rest a bit when we travel there.

Tim: It's okay, Dick. You're also tired from your shift. I'll just let Kon know I'll be late for a few-

Dick: No, no. If you want to rest first, let him know, he'll understand. But I'll still take you.

Tim: But, Dick...

Dick: Nah-uh. I didn't drive you to prom, remember? Let me do this, Baby Bird. And for me to also look out for Lex, just in case he bothers Conner again. We don't want that happening in the middle of your date.

Tim, laughs: Well, Kon will just have to drag Lex's ass to space.

Dick laughs with him.

Dick to Cass: Aww, you look beautiful, Cass. So where you going? Where will you meet Steph?

Cass, fixing her necklace: By her house.

Dick: Great! I already know where that is. I'll drive you there. We don't want to ruin your beauty. I mean, that's totally impossible, but I want you to just relax before the date.

Cass, blushes: I can do it.

Dick: Of course, you can. But I want to. Pretty please, pretty please. I'm a little protective over my sister.

Cass, rolls her eyes fondly but smiles: Of course. Thank you.

Dick: You're most welcome. And tell Steph if she does something extreme like set some fireworks, tell her to lay off with those energy drinks she started on her diet.

Dick to Duke: Little D, Little D! Don't even try to say no cus maybe your brothers and sister have already told you, but this is kinda my tradition now. I'm taking you to your first date.

Duke: They did tell me. But, Dick.. I don't want to be a burden. Weren't you injured-

Dick: No, no. That was like last week. I'm good. As long as you're good with me to take you, right? Now, I don't want to be the burden.

Duke, smiles: Never.

Dick, smiles and gives Duke a side hug: Then you're never a burden too, Little D. A big bro has to look out for the younger ones. Plus, I can say that you dressing up nice comes from my influence.

Duke, chuckles: Who else am I looking up to, right?

Dick to Damian: Shush, Dami. I know you're dating a super, and he can come and get you without a minute to spare, but tell Jon I'll be taking you.

Damian: Richard, please. I'm already at the right age.

Dick, puts a hand on his little (not so anymore) brother's shoulder and he refuses not to tear up (he fails ofc): I know, you've grown up so much, Dami. So much, since I made you Robin. But please, it will make me really happy to do this. It will give me peace, in some way. It sounds ridiculous, but yes.

Damian, doesn't even try to hide the fond he has on his face: Alright, Richard. I'll let Jon know.

Dick: He's not taking you somewhere out of Gotham or Metropolis, right? Cus then we'll have to take the Batplane.

Damian, chuckles: It's in Metropolis, don't worry.

Dick: Phew. I was as nervous as the time I took Tim on his date.

so....

maybe after a few years on Dick and Wally's wedding day, Dick's younger siblings will be walking with him on the aisle by his side and Bruce, their Father, on his other side of course. and they're thankful that the aisle is wide enough to fit the whole Wayne kids. Dick is a crying mess and he hasn't even reached Wally yet by the end of the aisle. because he's genuinely happy to have his siblings take him to the love of his life this time.

He’s watched a few 90s anime before, more the basic ones like One Piece and Pokémon, and he probably still watches them to this day. Boy has old CDs he has and you should probably try finding a Blue Ray (or use his if he can have Tim help fix it because it’s good as dead 💀) because he’s popping in every CD of old anime’s he have lying about.

“Wow, I didn’t know I had cowboy bebop! Or Slam Dunk!” He got a few rare gems, which makes it all the more fun to sit down on the couch under a blanket as you huddle and watch the nostalgic 90s anime shows together while eating popcorn.

He doesn’t mind watching new, modern day animes, just be prepared for when you two watch sad anime shows because he will sob like it’s the end of the world.

“NO, WHY WOULD KAORI DIE LIKE THIS?? AND SHE LOVES ARIMA- OH MY GOD IM SO—”sobs even more. He gets emotional while watching them because it’s so sad that it’s sO GOOD-

Loves dancing to those danceable anime music with you. He goes ALL. OUT. He even sings all of it in Japanese like wow-

I would love to hear him sing Cruel Angel’s Thesis in his Discowing suit and with goth makeup on it because it “sets the mood”, PLEASE-

Overall, great time watching with Dick. <3

Jason Todd

You expect someone like him to like Chainsaw Man, Trigun or something like those grunge-y, guns and knives animes, right? I mean, he does, but only with you and ONLY with you will he let his inner Magical Girl enthusiast ass shine. Because he LOVES Magical Girl animes. That’s probably the reason and one point of time why he wore red ribbons around his arms, he wanted that Sailor Moon experience and Tim might’ve just teased him about that era without knowing his love for Magical Girl animes and Jason might’ve flipped and freaked the fuck out and started chasing him down the manor.

Jason watches Sailor Moon, Madoka when he feels edgier than usual, Cardcaptor Sakura, every Precure series, Tokyo Mew Mew, man has all these shows somehow. He swears they weren’t through illegal means and he just worked very hard to gather all of them. He also might be a shoujo anime fan because if he loves Jane Austen books, you bet his ass would be reading Fruits Basket, Maid Sama or something because of course he would.

Also a Studio Ghibli fan, although watching the Tale of Princess Kaguya might make him feel too much, especially getting pissed off with the dad who forces his daughter into a wealthy life without her input and- yeah, you gotta calm him down as he cries bitterly and sourly with a pout on his face.

The two of you can go on and on about debating about unclear endings of animes all day long. You know the “AND SHE WAS A PRINCESS” video? That’s Jason.

Great man to watch anime with, and he’ll gladly be your Tuxedo Mask to your Sailor Moon (and not the “But you did nothing meme- or the other way around- he don’t mind being the Usagi-). <3

Tim Drake

I’m very convinced this man got into his whole detective shit because he watched Detective Conan and honestly I can’t blame him. Tim has probably the largest vessel of anime knowledge out of all of them. He doesn’t really have a specific genre he likes but he’s pretty fond of old 90s and 80s animes. He can explain the whole lore of One Piece, Fairytale, Pokémon like Jesus Tim, calm down- 💀

I can see him watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain or Key the Metal Doll because he likes that little bit of horror nature and mystery and thriller in his animes although he really doesn’t mind watching Haikyuu all over again if you want to.

Might introduce you to underrated and/or old animes like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Nadia the Secrets of Blue Water, every Studio Ghibli movie, those kinds of animes that give off the really pretty and aesthetic old anime animations that is just so pretty to watch and with really good storylines that both of you can cuddle on a couch together and watch. I bet he even watches anime with you even before you two got together, so you guys pretty much have “watching anime together” as part of the foundation of your relationship. Owns so much manga that you can’t even count, too.

Just… don’t make him watch those really slow burn, comedy love animes, specifically Love War. Not that he don’t like romance animes, he watches Ouran High School Host Club and Your Name, trust me, but Love War? He is going absolutely insane because of it.

Damian Wayne

Damian likes anime. Would 100% go to an anime convention with you as a date if you’re up for it. He doesn’t mind (surprisingly- just for you only-).

He doesn’t necessarily like showmen animes although he has enjoyed a few, but he really loves slice of life, I feel. It just feels like he wants to put himself in a normal life and with a tad bit of drama in it like what the characters go through. The touching ones like Hyouka or Natsume’s Book of Friends.

Also animal related anime maybe except Beastars because he didn’t understand shit-?? He calls that peak anime. Aggretsuko, Chi’s Sweet Home and My Roommate is a Cat?? Damian loves this shit, he watches it intently with his arm around you. Even if he doesn’t smile, you know he loves it by the way his eyes sparkle.

Just don’t tell his brothers. He will seriously feel betrayed if you do so because he only watches these kinds of shows with you: the cute animal ones that are actually wholesome and/or funny.

The whole family is into Studio Ghibli, and he is no exception. He feels like it’s the best kinds of anime to watch with you when you guys just want to turn in for the day and huddle up on the couch. It’s one of the rare times he relaxes and softens and he’s glad to have quality time with you. <3

Duke Thomas

He likes anime! Studio Ghibli is definitely a favourite of his and he would gladly watch it together with you! He also love a fair bit of Shounen animes, the more popular ones like Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Haikyuu, or Spy x Family. He likes them a lot!

A big fan of romance animes too: Ouran High School Host Club and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (if you two are in the mood to huddle on the couch together and cry).

Duke doesn’t mind any kind of anime so long as it doesn’t have too much horror or gore like… Higurashi. He gets chills when that anime is mentioned. D-Don’t watch it for your own sake if you don’t know. And if you do, avoid it with him at all cost because he will.

Duke also like singing some good anime songs with you and you guys can go crazy and dance around, just not as dramatic as Dick.

He would be super excited to spend a date with you watching shounen anime movies like from Jujutsu Kaisen and he would be so hype to spend time with you being a fanboy while also sharing that romantic air for the shared love of anime between you two and the love that you two share, although that love is far stronger. <3

Lucky: Dick Grayson x reader

„Grayson! Stop creeping outside my office like a…. like a creep!” she yelled opening the door to the room and peeking outside, seeing her boyfriend talking to one of the office crew. Honestly, she wanted it to sound different, better, more humorously, but the poor choice of words just made it a bit unfortunate and she facepalmed herself mentally. Creep like a creep? Great job, Y/N. Great freaking job.

“Hello sunshine.” His gaze landed on her and he grinned that signature smile that made half of the ladies in the office swoon just because they were lucky enough to see it. Y/N however was unimpressed, as she crossed her arms and eyed him warningly. Maybe it was because she had that smile waiting for her home every day, after work. Or maybe because he was showing off, again. “Mind if I come in?”

“I’d rather you do, Dick. You make it impossible for the ladies to work. Shall I remind you, this is not a circus when you are a star of the show. This is a serious workplace.”

“I know.” he walked through the door, pecking her lips lightly, hand landing on her hip pulling her closer, on display for everyone and the unwanted audience made her blush.

It wasn’t normal for Dick to just swing by in the middle of the day and she wasn’t sure how to feel about it. On one hand it was nice to see him, on the other, she had reputation to uphold and couldn’t risk getting all sappy all over him. Not here. Even if all she wanted was to place him on her swivel chair, sit on his lap and kiss him breathless, letting his hands roam her body. God! This boy was truly gonna be the death of her.

It only took her a second to get those dirty thoughts out of her head. Since she was the COO of one of the biggest companies in Bludhaven, she learned how to control and conceal her emotions pretty well. No one would even notice that single blush and slightly glassy eyes. No one except Dick.

“You look a little red, baby. Don’t you think it’s a bit too hot in here? Who would have thought, right? On the 15th floor of the building?” he teased and almost as if he was reading her mind placed himself on the seat, legs spread wide.

“Richard!” she shrieked and closed the door, appalled by his behavior. “don’t you have somewhere else to be?”

“Where else would I be than with my beloved girlfriend? Come on, baby, you work so hard, how about we relax a bit.”

“I’m at work, Grayson. I know you don’t get since you truly are a trust fund baby, but some of us ….”

“Ouch, Y/N. That’s just cruel. Even for you.” he gasped grabbing his chest, faking pain “Right through my heart.”

“ Oh, please….” She rolled her eyes

“You know you got a nice office, baby. Wonder why I never came here before.” He spun around, eyes falling on different elements of the interior. “And what may that be?” something on her desk captured his attention. “A little Nightwing figure! Oh, how cute is that! But something is wrong with this one’s ass.”

“Dick….” She warned, rubbing her forehead “Please…..”

“Hm? What do you need baby?”

“I need you to leave. If my boss comes by and see me talking to you during work hours….”

“Oh, sweetheart.” Dick stood up and came closer to her, one hand back on her hip, the other grabbing her chin lightly and making her look up at him. Damn it, she had heels and he was still so freaking tall in comparison. “Old, good Elle would never hurt you.”

“You know my boss?!” her eyes grew wide, dozens of crazy scenarios running though her head. She was working here for a couple of years now, how was it possible that he never told her he was familiar with company’s CEO.

“Bruce does. Rumor has it they were involved, if you know what I mean. Small world, I guess. But hey” he raised his hands in defense “you made your way up by yourself, none of us interfered with that. Yes, I know you were thinking that.”

“Let’s just say I believe you. But she’s still my boss and wouldn’t be able to charm her.”

“What are we betting on?” he grinned.

“Dick, please….”

“I love it when you say it like that.”

“Will you just shut up!” she fumed turning around angrily, to hide the blush that was now creeping all over her face.

“Don’t be mad at me….” He pouted and hugged her from behind, close to his chest.

“Let go off me!” she struggled against his grip, finally breaking free. “Why can’t you understand? I’m at work, I got tone of things to do. And letting my inferiors speculate about what we do behind the closed door and ruining their opinion on me is definitely not one of them!”

“But baby….”

“Stop it, Richard, I’m serious. You act like a freaking child!” she hissed and only the sad look in his eyes made her realize that she might have gone overboard. She sighed deeply trying to calm herself down. “Dick. I promise I’ll be home earlier today. We can spend some time together.”

“Sure.” He nodded flatly “you’re right. I think I just need to go. See you later, Y/N. Hopefully you can live up to your promise and get back before I leave for the night patrol.”

He started walking towards the door, eyes fixed on the floor, passing her without another word or joke or …. Anything.

She should be mad. He came here, throwing innuendos left and right, disturbing her peace, invading her space that was strictly off limit, capturing attention, acting just like Bruce with his playboy attitude, leading her straight towards trouble. Really like a man child. And still believing she would just relent, melt into him in her own office (which she almost did), let him do whatever he wanted. That was a hard no and he deserved that.

So why was it that it made her feel guilty and sad?

“Miss Y/N?” one of her coworkers, who was still a student, peeked inside and the girl quickly raised her gaze, concealing the worry in her eyes with professionalism and composure.

“What is it Leah? Did you bring me the reports I asked for?”

“Yeah, yeah, sure. Got it right here, right on deadline. But….can I ask you something personal?”

“Sure, go ahead, feel free to” Y/N scoffed and threw her hands into the air “you’re just another person I have to remind today what it means to be at work.”

“Um…” Leah hesitated, sensing Y/N’s irritation and sarcasm dripping from her tone, but the curiosity was too big to contain it “how…. How is it to be with Mr.Grayson?”

“What?” Y/N was definitely taken by surprise by the question

“Please, forgive me, but he is just so handsome and cute and perfect in every way.”

“Perfect?”

“Yes….” Leah’s gaze became a bit blurry and Y/N didn’t like that at all. “Every time he comes by…..”

“What do you mean every time?! How many times before did it happen?! And why no one told me about it?”

“He asked us not to.” Leah squealed “he said he just needed to see you even from the distance. He said you had that spark in your eyes when you work, that irresistible glow and your energy is so alluring….”

“He said that outloud?!” oh, she was definitely going to kill her boyfriend. But it was just so …. cute….

“Mhm.”

“what else did he do?”

“He’s just so thoughtful and caring and gentle. He always ask me about my mother’s health….”

“Your mum’s sick?” Y/N eyes grew wide

“She’s diabetic….”

“I’m sorry Leah. Truly.”

“It’s fine. We’re holding on. But he’s just interested you know. Not only with me. Mr. Grayson also helped Sarah when she got in trouble with her boyfriend, Tom. Apparently that bastard was beating her up.”

“What?”

“Yeah. And you know, your guy just seems so different than any other I know. And he truly loves you, his every word, every glance she threw your direction when you didn’t know was just speaking for itself. …..And…

“What else?” Y/N gaze softened a bit upon looking at the young girl in front of her “come on, you’ve already said so much, might as well finish. Not a word you say will leave this office.”

“Um…. Jane and Carol were wondering whether he takes care of you …. In the bedroom, you know….” her voice broke “God! I’m so sorry, Ms. Y/L/N. I never should have said that. I’m just …. I don’t have any good experience with boys and I have no one to talk to about it and I’m just scared I will end up like Sarah and I don’t want that so I just….”

“Leah, Leah, hey….” Y/N grabbed her hand, worried about Leah’s mental state. “It’s all right. Calm down. I can’t say I appreciate you girls having such thoughts, but I get why you feel like that. You’re still young. Don’t pressure yourself. There are good men in the world. And there's the one that would treat you right. You will just know that.”

“Thanks….”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this and if you repeat it to anyone I will deny, but I like you, Leah. You…. you can come talk to me, I want you to know. You’re like one of the very few truly good people in this world and I don’t want you to get hurt. I’ll help you when you need, just …. Let’s keep it all professional, you are still my subordinate after all”

“Thank you, Miss Y/L/N! thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve always looked up to you, since my first day. “ Leah jumped in joy and excitement “And you are truly lucky, miss Y/N. It’s hard to find someone like that

“Yeah….” Y/N repeated, the wheels in her mind turning. “I am. I am lucky.” Sudden realization hit her “I am lucky.” She stood up from her chair. “Leah?”

“Yes?”

“Get me HR on the phone.”

“Why?”

“I’m taking the rest of the day off. Some personal matters just came out. I need to take care of them immediately. Also…” she cleared her throat and fixed her jacket “I expect all of the statements and report I assigned to Sarah, Jane and Carol on my desk tomorrow morning. That should keep them busy enough to not talk about the matters they should not ever been interested in.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow then, Miss Y/N?”

“Indeed, Leah.” Y/N smiled at the younger girl.

“Y/N? Why are you home? What happened? Are you hurt, baby?” he stood up immediately, his first instinct upon seeing her was helping, taking care, making whatever was going on better.

“Oh, Dick” she sobbed and rushed towards him, jumping into his arms, legs wrapping around his waist, hands around his neck, bringing his face down to kiss him with everything she had in her.

“Not that I’m complaining, but why the sudden affection?” he grinned pulling away for air, even if she almost didn’t let him.

“I’m so sorry, baby” she sobbed in his arms “I’m so sorry….”

“For what?” Dick held her tighter, making sure she would not slip from his grip.

“I was so unfair to you. I was, well, in the lack of a better word, a bitch. I got so used to having you for myself I completely forgot that you are a treasure. And, as much as it pains me to say it, I had to be externally reminded of it. God, Dick, I love you, I love you, I love you so much. ….” She repeated frantically, kissing all over his face, on every place she could reach.

“Y/N, baby!” he laughed, enjoying and welcoming that sudden affection he didn’t get in a while “Baby, stop for a moment!” he cupped her cheek, his blue eyes meeting her e/c orbs and all that adoration he saw in them made him melt. “Let me tell you something. It’s important.”

“What….?” she shivered, fearing what words may come out of his mouth. Was he angry at her?

“I love you too. So much.” He pressed his lips onto her, dissipating all her worries. “How long do I have you?”

“I took the rest of the day off…” she trailed but Dick did not let her finish, when he threw her onto the bed.

“Let me make it worth your while.” He grinned leaning over her body.

There you lay, slouched up on the couch, muscles slack and relaxed as you forced yourself to listen to Grayson's rant about how he met this one vigilante, his tone awe-stricken yet his gaze was bitter and tense.

"Her moves... Unlike anything I've ever seen." He swooned.

He grunted, jabbing the punching bag a third time now, was it the fourth? You lost count at the 5th.

You could hear the collision of his fist jabbing into the punching bag that lay dangling from the ceiling, beads of sweat trickling from below his eyebrow as he bent his elbow, swinging at the punching bag once more.

"Did you see her ass? I heard she had a great ass."

You snickered softly, your voice with a tinge of mockery as you scrunched your nose in a teasing manner, your gaze flickered from Grayson's forearm to his glistening forehead.

"Her fighting. It's like poetry in motion." There was a slight pause before he added, "And her body is nice, too." He smirked as he continued striking the bag. Despite a steady stream of sweat, he didn't wipe it away as he let his gaze linger on your slack form.

“I like her sense of justice, her style, the way she moves, and her ass if I have to be honest." He beamed. His eyes caught yours for a silent moment, His eyes roaming over your lean figure and neutral expression as he crossed his arms in front of his chest, intentionally flexing his muscles. “Are you jealous?”

"I mean, if she looks as pretty as you say, I'd take her too." You uttered, Your expression unhinged and tepid as you let your gaze fixate on your nails.

“Good luck with that, [Name].”

And with one final puncture to the poor dented bag, he fainted against the couch, his chest trembling and quivering with each struggling breath as he wiped away the stream of glistening sweat down his temple.

“If she and I get together, you have to stay far, far, far away,” He smirked sternly, flashing you a toothy grin.

"And what makes you think you can pull such a great ass like hers?"

You grinned smugly, shifting your weight and positioning the upper half of your body on your elbows, leaning up and tilting your head up at him as your eyes flashed with a devious glimmer.

"Let's just say... I know a few things."

I'm SO here for your Balkan Dick Grayson takes! I was wondering how you feel about how DC writes or fleshes out Dick's Roma heritage. Are there particularly great moments of representation or particularly flop ones?

i honestly hate most of the writing. not only because they arent romani, i mean you can get some basic info about rom culture if you talk to romano people and i understand its a pretty closed culture (like fuck even though im part romani i still dont know most shit, although tbf rom people in turkey is p assimilated) so getting info might be hard, but FUCK dude they look at rom culture in an american pov and its like?????? why.

most rom people resides in balkans, and like bro even if you took some balkani culture to dickies writing or even in is living space itd make sense, since again, rom culture is p assimilated w the country they resides in. like even small things would be enough. a heavy velvety blanket w a tiger or a rose?? him sniffing bottles before drinking??? thats like the universel balkanian experience.

and weirdly enough i prefer the old stuff. like yes they were racist dont get me wrong but at least i was likr "aaah they are talking about it and dick is getting angry about the assumptions" aka that one god awful panel where bruce is like "ye ur kind is hot headed lmao" and dick is like "wtf" (i explain things great i know)

but now??? its used in an awful one-liner. and never referenced again. like what the actual fuck does "beautiful romani smile" means. thats. thats worse???????? thats so much worse than hotheaded cuz its used like "haha guys look i remembered dick is romani haha i know romani culture" and im like no????? shut the fuck up????

at least when people say rom people are hot headed i can be like "ye lmao we do start fights out of nowhere" and again ITS UNIVERSEL BALKAN EXPERIENCE. all balkanians have anger issues. we love chaos. but when its like "haha dick has a beautiful romani smile" im like "oh fuck off" cuz again, its such a narrow minded look at romani people.

Of the DC comics you've read so far, what would be your top recommendations for people to check out/what have you enjoyed the most?

when i tell you i have been thinking about this all day- i have been thinking about this. all. day.

so disclaimer, as of writing this, i have only read 31 runs from start to finish and 18 arcs/events outside of those runs. on top of, everything i've read so far has been strictly robin-centric, so dick, jason, tim, and damian. (i have read all of steph's robin appearances lol, but i haven't gotten to reading material for her, like say batgirl 2009, yet.) i've also decided not to rec from any run i'm currently reading, so for example, you won't see any batman: gotham knights recs here. because i'm most well-read on the robins, i'm only going to rec for them.

also, i'm going to operate under the following assumption: you've got a basic knowledge of the robins. none of these are where i would necessarily recommend anyone start reading about the boys, but i do think they'd be pretty interesting if you're already somewhat familiar with them and don't want to commit to reading whole character backlogs. does that make sense? i hope that makes sense.

DICK GRAYSON

oh god. this one is actually so hard because he has so much great stuff, but then also i have like a love/frustrate relationship with so much of it. like for instance, i really enjoyed The New Teen Titans, but also lowkey can't stand space adventures so whenever that went down i was like 😀👍. but okay. hmmmm.

i have two preboot recs, with explanations + caveats.

devin grayson's mob!dick arc, so Nightwing 1996 #99-100, 107-117. caveats: it doesn't really get to finish playing out/wraps up weird because of editorial changes/infinite crisis. but!! it's a super interesting look at how dick handles...failure. how he values himself in light of that failure.

tomasi's run, but specifically #147-153. (listen, i love the dick and tim moments in 'freefall' but the whole eternally pregnant lady thing was too weird.) this is classic, hyper-competent dick, okay? he's such a bad-ass. and an idiot- bro literally flops his severely injured ass over the bars of his glider and rides it UNCONSCIOUS back to the batcave. i can't with him. poor alfred. anyways, he deals with two-face, always a good time. and then at the end, as a treat, he cries because bruce is dead. so fun!! what was my caveat here? oh yeah, he has a girlfriend. i don't remember her name, she serves like...very little purpose, the whole relationship is very minor/background okay, but like it was so unnecessary. he can be single, dc, it's okay.

for post re-boot, just read tom taylor's run!! it's the best thing ever!! zero complaints!!

HA. yeah, just kidding. that run is very like/frustrate for me lol. oh man i'm struggling here. it's not all bad okay, i'm just really picky, and i haven't re-read any nightwing n52 and onwards since my first foray into comics (8 months ago) so my memories of these are the foggiest and i'm not sure how i feel about all of it in light of what i've read now. yk what, i'm just going to...not rec anything. sorry!!

JASON TODD

his comics either go so hard or they're absolute ass, why is there no in between. istg, i can't figure out why writers struggle with him so much?? well. i mean, i do have theories. but you didn't ask for those!

pre-boot:

detective comics #569-574. robin!jason in the hands of writers who like him is so much fun. which, don't get me wrong, i don't flat-out hate how starlin writes him, but i think you get a more well-rounded view of jason as robin when you also see him in 'tec. jason and bruce tangle with the joker, scarecrow, + mad hatter, and all of those adventures are...idk if they were intentional foreshadowing okay, but reading those and knowing where the story goes? oof. especialllllly #574. caveat: #572 is pretty light on jason, but he is great when he's on panel!

reboot:

probably a very basic answer but rhato rebirth (2016) #1-13, annual #1. i abhorred n52 rhato so i almost skipped rhato rebirth since it was still written by lobdell, but i'm really glad i didn't. i really enjoy jason's relationship with bizarro + artemis, but especially with bizarro because i think jason struggles a lot with feeling like a doomed creation, so yk, parallels. i want to say more but i know i'll get too wrapped up in discussing jason so i'm just going to stop myself.

i actually really enjoyed task force z, too. i think about tfz #8 so much, jason is such a manipulative little shit and i love it. he's so- i can't. i can't get into this rn, it deserves its own post(s).

overall for jay, i need people to read something other than utrh/lost days/b:ul 1-6. i love those, i do, but they aren't the only good pieces of jason content!!

TIM DRAKE

MY BELOVED!!!!!!!!!! in my heart of hearts, i just want to rec his whole robin run lmao. dick was my intro, okay, he is why i decided to start reading comics, but tim, specifically his robin solo is why i'm still reading comics. hooked me fr. and young justice 1998, ugh love. but it has been a minute since i read these as well, so hmm. okay okay okay

pre-boot:

batman: prodigal. short version, tim is robin to dick's batman. super fun. there's a solid amount of dick and bruce angsting too, which, love. tim is honestly just thrilled that jpv is out of the batsuit and even happier to working with dick. very cute.

robin #46. listen. they're all superheroes okay, they all feel pressure to save people. but tim...losses get to him. the amount of times that he gets shoved to a breaking point and then...gets back up. keeps going. *screams*. anyways!! this is not tim getting back up, okay? this is him being shoved way, way down. it's so good.

teen titans 2003 #20. tim's dad has died. he shows up for his weekend at the tower anyways. he is not okay. that's it, that's the pitch. i did not like...mmm at least 80% of this run okay, but a few of the issues HIT and this was one imo.

reboot:

*deep sigh*. look. tim is not tim for like basically all of n52, although there are moments here and there were he feels like himself. i did not like his 2023 solo, the best parts of young justice 2019 imo are the character designs, (except for his drake costume, what was that omg), and i haven't read any rebirth batman/'tec yet. except for zdarsky's run. which. tim is good there! but yeah, not really a whole lot of material to work with + very limited reading experience atm.

DAMIAN WAYNE

god, i love this kid. nature vs. nurture fascinates me, and so much of his story digs into that on top of trying to figure out who he is apart from all of that. i will say, i'm not a huge talia fan and by that i mean, i have no idea who she is "supposed" to be, like i have no frame of reference for that atm, so if you are a huge talia fan these recs might not hit for you because from what i've observed from her fans she is not well portrayed a whole lot since becoming his mother? i think one of the things that is normal is dick absolutely disliking her though, which cracks me up. there's this older batman story (batman #322-335) where bruce works with talia and dick goes running to selina and i was so entertained. what were we talking about? oh! damian!

preboot:

batman and robin 2009 #10-12. damian is struggling, with a lot of things. the fact that bruce might be alive, what that means for him and dick, and his mother's puppeteering. there's this line that kills me: "can't you just love me for who i am? not what you want me to be?" and the thing that gets me, is the use of who vs. what. because he could have said, "not who you want me to be", but he doesn't

reboot:

batman: shadow war. this is post-alfred's death, and honestly, most damian stuff post city of bane is pretty juicy, but there's this specific moment in shadow war: alpha #1 that had me speechless. just like 😧 i love bruce, but that man has some of the most chronic foot-in-mouth disease. oh but fair warning, for whatever reason they don't draw dami's mask connecting?? it's so- it drives me nuts.

JUST FOR FUN

these are just two issues that i enjoy for the brother content!

nightwing 1996 #25. dick and tim's relationship makes me ILL. *ahem*. this issue is mostly just super cute and fun, (there's like 0.2 seconds of angst when tim asks dick if he ever thinks about jason 😭) and i adore it sm. fun fact, it's actually one of the first comics i ever bought!

batman 2016 #16. unfortunately, tim is not here for this, but duke is! jason and damian's interactions in the background of bruce's Very Serious Speech are excellent. bruce is so dramatic and his kids are so unserious.

what i've most enjoyed

i've enjoyed the majority of what i've read, even titles/events i wasn't particularly looking forward to but had on my tbr for whichever character. i'm going to break down most enjoyed into two catergories, arcs that i loved top to bottom and then the guilty pleasures. this is not an exhaustive list, just what immediately came to mind.

top to bottom

bruce wayne: murderer?/fugitive. shocker, ik. but it's just, it's just so frickin good. i've said before, and i'll say it again, gotham war could NEVER. this right here is peak batfamily drama. the tension? the mystery? the angst? i knew nothing going into this okay, and truth be told, when i started it i was like "oh joy. another event." because i was just trying to read the 1996 nightwing run, but i'd committed to reading in full all the events it crossed over with. but i was invested so quickly. and like, i loved how the narrative supported the possibility that bruce was the murderer, because like, you know there's no way, but the more that comes out the more damning it is, and so you're like really dying to know what actually happened and i feel like the reveal was satisfying.

batman: city of bane. i'm going to cautiously put this here, because there might have been something i didn't like but i cannot recall it for the life of me right now. something about me is i love when the heroes lose. infinity war, empire strikes back? love. and ik bruce takes back gotham, but they lose alfred, okay, they lost. i also didn't expect to like this arc, i decided to read it because i wanted to know how alfred died. and first of all, i was shocked, even though i knew it was coming because i expected it to like happen towards the end. but nope. just *snap*. and then later when bruce is back in the manor and is confronted with alfred's body and his good-bye message? oh. my. god. i was bawling. despite my penchant for sad narratives, i don't tend to cry that much, but this got to me so bad. like i had to pause because i couldn't see. amazing.

red robin. his cowl is so ugly, but i really do love the run. i see a lot of discourse about it and also a lot of...interesting fanfic takes, so i don't really talk about it a lot here because it feels like most people are kind of tired of hearing about this run, which fair. i really enjoyed it as a sequel to his solo robin run. tbh, i almost put this in the guilty pleasure catergory, because there are a couple things i don't totally love, but like if the others are 10/10, this is 9/10.

young justice 1998. i love this comic so, so much. i don't even know what to say, i get so overwhelmed with joy when i think about this comic. nothing has hit the same way with this group since either, which is a crime. i need a title with this team so badly.

guilty pleasures

these are all runs/events i know some/most? people cannot stand and i totally get why, and i have problems with them, so i'm probably never going to rec them in good conscience but also like i can't lie and say i don't like them. these are not recs, okay? okay.

robin war. is it a hot mess? yes. but there is not a whole lot of canon content out there with all the boys working together, okay? so much of that event had me banging my head into a wall, but for me, there were a handful of pearls in there. i mean honestly, if i listed out pros and cons the cons list would be way longer but those pros are very precious to me.

batman and robin: eternal. very similar reasoning overall to robin war. plus cass finally came back!! i missed her. i love robin!dick and batman content, and the kids working together. this is probably my least favorite guilty pleasure though, okay, it's on thin ice.

grayson. listen, i love janin's art sm. i'm pretty neutral about spy stuff, so like i don't engage with it a whole lot. meaning, although i've heard it's tropey af in regards to the genre, i'm not familiar enough with the genre to be like trying to dig my eyeballs out with blunt spoons at the cliche of it all. the constant sexualization of dick got old super fast, and her name may have been helena but she wasn't- my list of dislikes is lengthy. but idk, i had fun with it. and imo it does have some genuinely great moments, i love dick in the desert with the baby, the ache i felt when dick wanted to come home and couldn't get ahold of bruce, issue #12 stabs me in the heart- the dick and dami reunion? stoppppp. i feel like this run and the ric grayson era are dick's most out there lmao

idk much about the rwby x dc crossover except jealous bumbleby but i did sort of keep up with the latest rwby season and your comment about dick and ruby getting along makes so much sense to me.

like ruby is the leader and it’s really been weighing on her for a couple of season until it kinda comes to a head in the latest and she snaps. like this season has rwby + jaune go through basically a wonderland dimension and while the others went through instances where they faced their inner selves/troubles there’s a being that actively made sure ruby couldn’t and that lead to the others becoming more sure of themselves and even for blake and yang to finally get together and it’s great and sweet!

only issue was ruby had been closing herself off slowly the entire season and putting on a brave face until she couldn’t. because as much as the others were getting better they never stopped looking at her to lead and she basically goes why am i always the one with the plan and the one who’s happy etc until she runs off after she realized she snapped. which all leads to her having a no good bad time where the others are too late to uh. let’s say stop her from “remaking” herself into a new person who fundamentally isn’t ruby anymore.

she does get a therapy session in and realizing it’s ok for her to love herself and be herself burdens or not and coming back to kick ass with everyone.

sorry for the ramble especially if you’re already kept up on rwby but idk ruby and dick to me have so many parallels with both being the youngest and leader in their respective og teams (rwby and teen titans) as well as the burden of being the one who always has to move forward through everything. also both of them being literal beacons of hope with how ruby in the season before last sent out a worldwide transmission asking for help and giving hope in the same speech and dick being dick. ok now i’m done thanks for reading the word vomit <3

I'm actually not caught up with the RWBY but I really got into Ruby when I stumbled across the RWBY: Ice Queendom opening scene.

I kept watching the show and I just fell in love with Ruby. My favorite type of characters are those that are cheerful and sweet but unstoppable badasses. AKA RUBY AND DICK. Not only that, both Ruby an Dick are the leaders of their teams. Ruby with the RWBY team and Dick with everyone. Literally, he'll walk into the room and everyone else automatically treats him like the leader.

Ruby also has a strong sense of moral justice and her understanding of the battle field makes her battle tactics one of the best in the entire RWBY universe. Much like Dick, the two of them are able to understand the situation quicker than everyone else and are able to formulate a plan that leaves them winning practically every time.

Not to mention, they both have sweet tooths. Ruby with her sugary coffee and Dick with his sugary cereal.

There's so much I could go on about the similarities between these two. The crazy intelligent cinnamon rolls with the tactical sense of Sun Tzu and the heart of Mansa Musa.

I was so happy to see all their interactions.

dickate anon here to say: during the grayson run (which is a delight I highly recommend if you haven’t read it) dick’s romantic interest of the run is helena bertinelli… which makes me wonder how kate would feel about dick having an ex who is ALSO an archer with a purple color scheme…

Omg but Kate being like *sniff* a crossbow? Clearly *I* am a step up. THEE disdain she would have if she met Dick before Helena, THEE archery superiority, a crossbow does not require SKILL, it does not require STRENGTH (Kate technically it does--) it is SO much easier to fuck up and then you are without a weapon!!! None of those fiddly bits on a recurve!!!

If she knows Helena independently of Dick, Kate is much more chill. She's like, yeah I see it. I'd date her. They're bros, basically. Dick Does Not Like This because when he does something stupid or upsets Kate for a dumb reason, Babs and Helena will both rag on him about it, they are firmly in camp Purple Archer. Purple Archer transcends romantic bonds, okay. It crosses dimensions. It is Sacred. At some point Kate or Helena explains this to Dick, potentially with the help of a moderate quantity of alcohol, and whoever is not explaining goes "See? she gets it." Dick is now worried his ex-girlfriends are trying to steal his current girlfriend. Why is this happening.

But if she meets Helena as Dick's Ex, Kate is very jealous. Eventually she'll be more chill about it but for a while that's a way to either get Kate really pissed, really insecure, or really possessive, and it's honestly a roll of the dice which it's going to be. The odds are not great for that going in a fun direction but the odds are good it will make Kate cry in some capacity, so Dick will kick someone's ass if they bring that up to Kate before she and Helena are friends.

AFTER they become friends they probably team up (there's a falconry joke in there somewhere) and they absolutely roast Oliver Queen. I don't care if Helena canonically likes Oliver, she WILL roast him when hanging out with Kate (someone will be like "oh, god, there's two of them???" and someone else is like "dick is this one of your sexual fantasies?" and eventually clint hangs out with them and "oh god there's three of them." "dick is this one of your sexual fantasies??")

Also Dickbabs see Kate and are IMMEDIATELY like, we need to wife her. They can and WILL fight Jason for that right.

I am 100% sure comics have always been about both the plot and character and the sexy campy tight suits. Our lady Wonder Woman was not literally created as a pro-bisexual bondage hero for us to forget that both horn doggery and literary captivation are time honored and deeply respected gifts delivered to all fans.

Oh absolutely. The history of comics in general have been very fascinating in terms of how they came about being but also the fact that these characters are blatant and obvious acts of outright fanservice. I've made it a point in one of my posts that Dick Grayson as Robin has been sexualized since his introduction, literally before my parents were born.

The late and great George Perez who passed away a few months ago is one of the most celebrated artists in all of DC and Marvel Comics. He's the man who designed Thanos, a watershed character that is up there with the likes of Darth Vader in being a villain that defines a generation, was not as widely known for his affinity of drawing characters like Dick Grayson's Robin in heavy bondage. I won't show it here but it's like the 5th result you find when you Google George Perez Robin. But yeah characters like Batman and Superman but especially Robin/Nightwing and Wonder Woman have always been sexualized and it goes back basically to their inception as characters.

It's something that's often discussed but rarely ever settled on is the notion of what acts as simple, fun, campy, tongue-and-cheek fanservice and what is taking it WAY too far. I fully admit I am someone who very much enjoys the Nightwing fan service. However there comes a time when it feels like they are peppering on the sex appeal moreso than actually highlighting the characters themselves. I mean look at the most recent Nightwing variants.

They're literally drawing him like a 50's pinup model. Which there's nothing wrong with! It just shows to highlight that DC Comics knows what kind of character their marketing, and this being a variant cover, this isn't what is widely distributed but instead is given as a limited edition release. DC is well-aware of how the fans see Nightwing. His rogues call him "Pretty Boy" they have fight scenes where Dick takes full advantage of the fact that he is what most consider to be very handsome to his advantage.

Yet at the same time the comics have been very not good when it comes to the issue of consent. I think almost everyone knows what happened between Nightwing and Tarantula in Nightwing #93 in the 1996 run of Nightwing. This fandom rightfully detests Devin Grayson for her writing and her unwillingness to own up to the fact that she had wrote Dick Grayson being SA'd. Yet no one talks about how disturbingly accurate the characterization of Dick was to real victims of SA. Especially male victims of SA. His life collapses before his eyes, he starts drinking heavily, throwing up in public, sleeping in fire escapes, talks to himself and it's hinted he starts losing his grip on reality as a result of his SA.

I am by no means at all attempting to glorify or even justify Devin Grayson's writings. It was wrong in 1996 just like it is wrong now. Yet even when we look back to the 2010's during the Grayson comic run. Dick is still getting his ass smacked by female colleagues and is getting ogled and Dick makes it vocally known that he did not give consent to be touched that way and it's played off for laughs.

As someone who identifies as a man and sees these comics it both frustrates me and leaves me feeling dejected. Male victims of SA are still heavily stigmatized on all ends of the gender identity spectrum. About 1 in 10 SA's that occur involve men but that number is largely inaccurate due to the fact that many men are heavily stigmatized and treated as weak or less than a normal man if they admit that they were put through that situation. When Tarantula SA'd Dick he didn't blame her, he blamed himself. And what does DC do after all of this? They slide it under the rug and pretend it never happened. Lost in the sea of ret-conned events never to be touched upon again. It'd be fine if this was a one-off thing that everyone at DC collectively agreed to bury and never speak of again, only acknowledging it as a mistake, but Dick continues to be the target of being DC's pinup boy and constantly flaunted for his handsome looks and divine ass.

I never want to give Devin Grayson any more credit for the work that she did. She absolutely doesn't deserve it. Yet despite that DC still thinks she's good enough to give her the wheel to write a comic during a pride event and what does she do? Make Damian Wayne borderline homophobic.

If I were given the rights and the ability to write a one-shot under the official license of DC Comics. I would write a series focusing on Dick Grayson dealing with the unresolved trauma of his SA. I would start with a preface addressing what has happened to Nightwing over the past few decades bring to light how he has become a sex symbol over the years, but also bring to the forefront that regardless of sexual or gender identity, sex without verbal consent is r*pe. Regardless of it being Mirage, Tarantula, or the girls at the Academy in Grayson. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. I want to write about Dick's unresolved trauma finally bubbling up to the surface after years of repressing it like it always does, but instead of resorting to violence or drugs and alcohol as is often portrayed in media, Dick reaches out for help. Maybe not from Batman, maybe not from Barbara, maybe not the Titans, but someone meets Dick at his level. They don't see him as the vigilante prince, the sexiest billionaire alive, or Nightwing. They see a man who is struggling and is asking for help and this person does the right thing and gives Dick the help he needs. Dick will admit it was wrong for him to try to bury his trauma, and no amount of punching vigilantes or repressing your feelings makes them go away. You can't fight darkness with more darkness, you have to fight it with light. Imagine how great that would be for a boy, young or old, to see Nightwing, one of the coolest, sexiest heroes in all of comics media, telling them it's okay to open up about their feelings, that even for guys, being touched without your consent isn't manly or something to be proud of, it's wrong, and there's nothing to be ashamed of in seeking out help.

To end this tangent: yes, people are often attracted to both the deep characters and stories of the bat families but also are attracted to the fanservice. Yet at the same time we don't necessarily know what or where is the best place to draw the line when it comes to too much fanservice. We've crossed the bright red line many a time for the sake of a gritty story, but we haven't accepted the consequences that come with not acknowledging the mistakes of the past. It's up to the fans to make that determination.

Also p.s. sorry for hijacking your ask and turning it into a rant about the sexual depictions of Nightwing. I know it's not at all what you asked for. I did it to try to highlight how complicated this topic truly is at the end of the day.

And now Wayne is back but doing something else. Also, apparently Wayne’s son from Son of the Demon (which I did read back when it was released) is Robin now - or maybe was Robin because he doesn’t appear in The Black Mirror. I believe Identity Crisis was about to begin when I last entered a comic book store on a Wednesday, but since then I’ve been tangentially aware that somewhere along the line Bruce Wayne “died” (comic book scare quotes in full effect) and Dick Grayson took over in his place. As well, though I’m not a regular reader, I am familiar with some of the changes to the title over the last several years. I’m familiar with Batman and his mythos but I don’t read his books save for special occasions - books or stories that come highly recommended or hyped. It’s not the salvation of the genre and it does stumble awkwardly in places, but simultaneously, it does get some things right and those things are worth the time of the superhero enthusiast.Īt this point, I should mention that the caveats from Batwoman apply here as well. And in some ways, The Black Mirror vindicates his sentiment. He’s proven himself to have great taste in the past and it was on his recommendation that I gave Big Questions a shot against a warehouse of reservations and came out quite pleased.

Book critic Dan Goodman, knowing my reluctance to heartily endorse the superhero genre, gave the book a pretty nice recommendation and said he thought it was one of the best examples of the genre in years (I’m paraphrasing from memory here, but I think I’m doing him justice). I mean, think how many enemies I’ve made by saying that Batwoman: Elegy was mostly awful and that All-Star Superman fell flat to me partly because Frank Quitely’s people drive me crazy.) So my general rule for this sort of thing is that I won’t review a superhero book unless 1) I really found something special in it (and I really need to do more of this) or 2) the book was recommended to me. On average, even the better books will only be able to rate an OK rating by the measures I use. And that’s why, for the most part, I don’t really review a lot of superhero books. Sometimes we just want to turn our brains off and take in an unbelievable story. I read and loved The Hunger Games, even though it wasn’t anything particularly special. We don’t expect romance novels or westerns or Elizabeth George mysteries to be Remains of the Day or Cloud Atlas. There are Good books that find themselves nestled in the genre that has been Marvel and DC’s bread and butter since the ‘60s, but they’re rare and all the more special for it.Īnd that’s fine.

Rather, the problem is that so much of superhero fiction doesn’t actually succeed. It’s not that a superhero story can’t succeed and rank among the best of the medium that would be like saying The Long Goodbye isn’t great American literature. Because there are standards of good storytelling that sort of just exist over and above genre concerns, I’m not often kind (or perhaps better: generous) to superhero fiction. The same awkwardness exists here on Good Ok Bad. But we shouldn’t expect a neck-and-neck race. Certainly, a critic might make note of Twilight's purpose and express some evaluation of how well it succeeds on its own terms. On a site that reviewed both books side-by-side, we’d expect reviewers to use at least most of the inches on the same yardstick to measure out their respective values. While it may seem unfair to compare the two books, one is entertaining trash and the other is awestriking and thoughtfully composed (at least according to most everyone who’s read it and isn’t thirteen). See? They’re both great because they both succeed within their unique contexts! After all, how far could you trust someone who rated Twilight and Brothers Karamazov as being Great Books because Twilight succeeds at its goal of being a mindless-but-amusing supernatural romance/thriller and Brothers Karamazov succeeds at its goal of being kick-ass, world-class literature that people will be talking about for hundreds of years or more. I try to extend some graces to the contexts in which these books operate, but completely divorcing genres from the general expectations of the medium would perpetrate some pretty wild discrepancies. One of the weird things about this site is that I rate genre books alongside, quote-unquote, more serious fare.

HBO Max's madness continues with it being confirmed DC Super Hero Girls 2019 (the one from MLP Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust) is also a tax write off like Final Space and be sealed away once it leaves Netflix this year. Thoughts on this?

And I say this as someone who, while liking what I saw for the most part, still saw massive flaws in DC Superhero Girls, i.e. making a good chunk of the young adult male characters into shallow sterotypes or wasting the titans characters, paticuarlly Dick Grayson. (We already have a show for that). I do feel though the crew had a genuine passion for dc, going with some deeper cuts like bumblebee, zantana or GL Jessica Cruz for the main cast, bringing in my boy ted, and even going so far as to use Julia, wonder woman's surrogate step mom, and doing the character great justice. It wasn't the best thing ever but it wasn't half bad and like everything good or bad does not deserve oblivion. That said at least in this case.. said oblivion is more obvious and something far less easy to hide if someone didn't know of the show thanks to a VERY visible first party tie in game with nintendo, a decent amount of merch, and a crossover film with "please stop punching my children". It's a lot easier to hide what they did to say final space because while well loved and having enough of a fanbase to sell out the finale graphic novel on day one, it's not a huge crowd pleaser. Kids will notice this series is just.. gone and once they find out why they'll be pissed, and dc fans are not the type to really.. forget something happened. Trust me Dan DiDio tried. A lot. The sad part though is they probably will keep doing this as long as they can get away with it. While this will thankfully bite them in the ass more, they've so far been VERY careful at picking their unpersoning targets: while they cancelled tuca nad bertie they weren't stupid enough to unlist it. It's telling my mom hadn't even heard of them doing it, so i'ts likely a lot of general audiences are either ambivilant because it hasn't come for them yet, or simply didn't know because none of the shows affected were things they cared about. Good/bad news is that Parmaount is doing the same shit.. but their also being WAY louder with it, canceling Rise of the Pink Ladies and Star Trek Legacy. And even Trek fans who didn't like Legacy, probably won't be nearly as quite to see an entire series vanish, not helped by paramount having as recently as LAST MONTH promoted having all of star trek with legacy on the banner. While WBD has had a horrifying ripple effect.. it's also getting to the point where said ripples can't be ignored. We also have an ongoing writer's strike which is in part thanks to shit like this, which also means them doing it will just make it harder to settle. Which is bad for consuming media, true.. but is great for making sure this never happens again.
