It's, frankly, wild to me that so many people even equate shipping to exclusively mean "to root for two or more characters to get romantically involved in the source material", and any exploration of dynamics beyond that is then frowned upon, shamed or invalidated.

To an unfortunately large amount of people, shipping is little more than a popularity contest :')

To me, a huge part of the appeal in shipping is that it's a means to explore interpersonal character dynamics from a piece of media in ways we don't necessarily see happen in canon.

I LOVE non-canon ships for the fact that they leave us with SO much creative freedom! [more in-depth thoughts + what appeals to me about charlastor under the cut]

It allows us to hypothesize and experiment in-depth with how these characters would find their way from one type of dynamic into a different direction in so many different ways, without canon to give us one solid path to stick to.

One trope I'm very fond of in fanfiction in particular has always been slowburn with a touch of mutual pining - when a dynamic is truly given room to breathe and naturally grow into different directions and REALLY digs into the involved characters, it enables the authors to thoroughly lay out why and how their feelings change, what affected them in the process and how/when they eventually choose to act on them!

Character analysis is my bread and butter, so if a dynamic strikes my interest it's almost always because it has something unique about it far beyond just wanting to see them all lovey-dovey bc it's cute (though that can be part of it lol).

Charlie and Alastor as a combination are so intriguing to me because they're in many ways polar opposites, but simultaneously also have just enough similarities to leave a lot of potential for a genuine bond.

They combine the most conniving, manipulative, steadfastly and proudly immoral person with someone whose good intentions color absolutely everything she does, who also has the willpower and moral code to see it through.

They're like a forbidden, alluring dance, endlessly circling in each other's gravitational pull - which parts of them will prevail? Who will inevitably buckle to the other's influence first? What draws them in? What drives them apart?

I love watching Alastor's masterfully crafted plans get absolutely thwarted because he can't get a consistent read on her - a being who's - by her very nature of being part demon and part angel - a bundle of contradictions.

I'm also extremely fond of Charlie 100% seeing through him every step of the way and still keeping him around - regardless of his motivations, he is a vital, helpful part of the hotel, and she won't give up on trying to win him over for her cause in earnest.

There are very few things as funny to me as the idea of Alastor -master manipulator - being so far up his own ego, obsessing over getting a figurative hold over this fascinating and yet frustrating princess, that it takes forever for him to realize he's the one being used all along, expertly playing right into her cards.

Simultaneously, there's so many other ways to write them!!! It's just so damn fun to explore all of the what-ifs.

Tbh I used to be a really big Xmen fan, but I feel that as the commercialization and commodification of the superhero genre has expanded, the point of the genre itself has been watered down and turned into something that would rather make money than say anything actually important. Out of this frustration, I wanted to make a hero that I felt would be accurate to how one would feel if they existed in our world... if that makes any sense. I took bits and peices from other characters I thought were interesting and thought about how the treatment of our society and gov would end up making them feel over a long enough course of time and what consequences that would entail when those feelings are paired with almost god like abilities.

Personality:

Still in development, but my basic idea is that he's a guy that seems very serious, but he's actually pretty chill (at least he likes to say he is but he has a short temper lol) and he mainly wants what's best for the students of Night Raven, which is why he took his position in the first place. He is very wise and creative and thinks of unusual solutions to problems students come to him with. He's stone cold and vicious when he wants to be (especially of something that's happened puts people in danger) and is very unlikely to feel sorry for the students he punishes.

Favorite thing about The Spot?

That is a TOUGH QUESTION! Where do I even begin???? There's just so much to love about the guy! Can I cheat and say "everything"? Maybe a top 3? I'm gonna do a top 3.

1. How expressive he is.

As in, his voice is so expressive, and so is his body! I love the way his spots are used to convey emotion in an unconventional way, especially the one on his face. I mean, it could have been so easy to just make it function like the eye of a cyclops, but instead they decided to have it expand and contract like a pupil, and just generally be his entire face instead of just an eye. It adds to how inhuman he is, but also, probably makes it pretty easy to read him for anybody thats been around him enough, lol. Theres also his body language and how well it conveys his character journey. No conventional human face required here, no siree. A mans face couldn't possibly convey as much swagger as this strut anyway.

2. His personality and the way he completely fools the audience.

Tl;dr: Spot is a total goofball, we know this. He's awkward and silly and weirdly polite, and generally just a delight to watch. Which is why it's all the more jarring when we see his much more malicious side coms out. He's truly toxic on the inside, but boy, did marketing and the very start of the movie do a great job at lulling people in to thinking that he'd be nothing but a funny little guy. There is nothing like the satisfaction of showing this movie to someone for the first time and watching their reaction when Spot becomes absolutely terrifying.

3. His powers!!!!!

The writers really knew how to think with portals, and thus, so did Spot! I think it's really cool how his history as a scientist is taken in to account, allowing him to be just as creative as a person in his field would be with his powerset once he finally figures himself out. It's so fun watching him zip around thanks to his portals maintaining his velocity, practically flying. Or how he uses them to boost the strength of his hits. There's also the mystery of his anatomy and him becoming physically stronger as the movie goes along, but that's another thing.

Anyway this is a pretty condensed list, but tbh it's hard to put in to words all the things I love about him!

Well, unknown hero agent man / pen symbolism anon, i hope you're reading this, cos you hit the nail on the head! this kind of symbolic storytelling is not only a fine art of cinema (being lost these days a little sadly, what with the whole netflix speedy turnover etc), but exactly what (good) films of the horror genre aim to do.

horror has long been a way to creatively tell 'normal' dramatic stories through subtext and symbolism. not sure if this is still a way around traditional censorship but im sure it began that way. films like the exorcist, the shining, rosemary's baby... all classics that are filled with subtext. its also an exciting way to talk about things that might seem trite or too bleak when portrayed as a 'straight' drama (this is the term meaning 'non-genre based' or 'non-musical' lmao). So you could say that ST is NOT straight, in more ways than one 😉

but much of this will go over casual viewers heads, so its finding the balance between making a story believable on the surface (another dimension exists! scary government men trying to kill us!) and subtextually (the UD as a metaphor for trauma/AIDS/closeted homosexuality/abuse etc) if viewers are clever enough to see/feel it. i say feel because much of storyviewing is instinctive instead of analytical.

so ST incorporates both - not just metaphorical, vague storytelling, but also real issues too. but it goes one step further, and actually has characters talk explicitly about reading deeper into stuff (murray's behind the curtain speech). it's a very meta show, even for a genre piece, which is why it astounds me that some people think it's not that deep lol. and some people think that only literature can be deep, but never tv or movies - which is an insult to anyone who has ever been passionate about cinema tbh. It's a statement that would probably rip the heart out of the duffers' chests and stomp on it. these guys are super nerds who have dedicated their adult lives to this passion project. as finn said, 'most people make it then just cash in - im so glad they still care'.

I'm sorry you don't feel comfortable talking about the beauty of this storytelling on your main. it really does surprise me that the fandom is so censorship obsessed because sexual metaphors have long existed in visual media, and especially in horror films. there used to be a long post about byler and a potential sex scene at lover's lake on here, but the user disappeared and the post went missing. it was about all the sexual imagery in ST, with a focus on byler in s4. i especially loved how they mentioned mike's introduction, where he was just in underwear: it is both appropriate for the setting, but also gets the audience used to him as a growing lad with a body and draws attention to those uncomfortable, potentially sexual aspects of being a teen. i mean, he was in tiny pants for god's sake. did we need to see that? why did we see it? etc etc

hilariously, they also referenced the always sunny in philadelphia scene where a character is in a therapist office talking about a pen being a dick. he then puts it in his mouth and chews the pen lmoao

i think you'd enjoy @therainscene's rod symbolism post too. I'm personally hoping for some explicit sex scenes with byler, because the show so far has arguably been telling that story metaphorically already for 4 seasons, and bringing it out of the subtext could be a storytelling device in itself. bringing byler's secrets into the light. after all, this is a period piece that aims to shed light on a bygone era. its not a propaganda piece that needs to remain coded; the reasons for staying secretive still exist for mike and will in the 80s, but times have changed since then for us as a global audience, and more importantly, the aspirational message has changed. what message would the duffs want to send to viewers that are still bigoted? clearly one of the beauty of homosexuality, seeing as will, our fav gay boy, has been the darling sympathetic victim of the show since s1e1. the show needs to remain true to both the 80s while also having a strong message for this decade in order for modern audiences to be able to gain something from watching this story; in order for there to be a reason the show exists at all.

so to answer your question, i had never picked up on the pen symbolism until now, but i immediately agree, not least because 1) it must have a meaning that connects to byler's conversation otherwise why does it just interrupt them with no reason? (from a storytelling pov), and 2) because of the always sunny scene lolllll

Yup... the horny kind? Lol... queue Lovin on Me by Jack Harlow. I am pretty vanilla, and I do usually focus a lot on the emotional aspects over the physical. I also generally prefer writing the foreplay over the actual tactics of banging, but I try.

Lol... well... one time when I was 13 I may have written an AU where Justin Timberlake and Nick Carter were normal boys attending the same high school 😂...

Weird reality TV AUs? Sexual tension? Feelings?

Probably too much exposition / time in the character's heads spelling out their motivations vs. letting readers come to their own conclusions.

I'm not always consciously aware of it in my own writing, but sometimes I suspect I'm a little sappier than what I'd normally I prefer to read.

Also I'm slow and sometimes leave my readers hanging for extremely long periods of time (I'm so sorry).

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Depends on the context, but, for me, I'd have a hard time without a native speaker to consult with. No strong feelings against it though.

Working for a company

Many coding jobs do require collaboration and communication with others. However, it's important to remember that not all coding roles involve extensive social interaction. There are positions where you can work independently or have limited interaction with colleagues.

In my case, I work in the office Monday and Friday. Mondays are when everyone in the whole IT Department is in, except those who are off or on holiday etc. This is what I do:

I walk in

sit at my desk near the window

log in

code - occasionally turn around and annoy the Lead Web Developer with cries because my code isn't working (he then solves it in 10 seconds...)

At around 2:30pm is an IT meeting in the conference room. What do we discuss?

That's my company but I assume it's something similar for other companies. It's also important to know not everyone in the IT Department are web developers or work on building websites, not even in the sub-department Dev Team. Our Dev team are 6 members and only 2 (me and the Lead Web Developer) are web developers, so work on the company's websites. The other guys are very script-building and database oriented. All I do is code websites.

Maths in coding

Depends on what you're coding. I work with websites, I use Year 11/Grade 10 level of maths - it's not hard. As a reference, I stopped learning maths as a subject at school at a Year 13/12th Grade level and the stuff I'm using is way easier than what I learnt last - stuff my little sister, who's 14, can understand.

I chose web development because of the little maths. Some people have told me "Oh you'll encounter it one day" - I still haven't after 2 years. I use C# and JavaScript at work and still do very little maths. Maybe loops? I know if you're going to study computer science at university you will have to learn a good amount of maths, definitely harder than what I use!

Here is a list of the maths I use daily, that I can think of:

Algebra

Logic and Boolean Algebra

Basic Algorithms

That's it. Maybe if I learnt the maths need in programming to the max, it might make my life easier when I am working on my personal projects, but my life is already easy with the little maths I know so I'm good for now.

Designing websites is less maths-y and more... designing in my opinion and experience. "I drew out this design for the website... how do I do I code that?" literally me every time I start a project.

Again, other fields in Computer Science would require more maths knowledge so research that field you want o go into and Google/ChatGPT "What maths is needed in [field name]?"

Going to preface this by saying that I have preferences, and those preferences tend to veer towards gay shit and people who don't initially get along ending up ride or die, and as such a high proportion of these are going to be Revalink.

Anyway. The fic that got me into that ship, changed my brain chemistry, and is a large part of why I go !!!! about ghosts (literal and nonliteral) haunting the narrative, characters with amnesia who are supposed to be dead, and the Rito as a whole, is Pinesong by aperplexingpuzzle and that is the fic that makes me go "if you read NOTHING else in this fandom read THIS holy fuck."

(But also you should be reading other things too, because there is so much good shit and I adore it greatly I go back to reread my favorites regularly. Also check out the authors I mention apart from just the fics I link there is so much good fic I'm forcing myself to just pick one per author or else I will be here literally all day.)

Next up: Moonlight (every single night) by Heleentje. Do you like time loops? Do you like characters slowly, painstakingly figuring out how to get it right? Did you get very attached to Revalink from the last fic? how about some ~queerplatonic Zelink~ in this trying time?

Frankly, it is very hard to pick just one fic by Ginneke, they've got so many good ones but I'm going to have to settle on Flowers from your Beloathed, which is another Revalink fic set before the Calamity where, y'know, Revali is getting flowers from a secret admirer. Except he's Revali. Hilarity ensues and I enjoyed the hell out of this one ^-^

Also also. Come Morning Light by misscoconi. Post-Calamity, they are both idiots (affectionate) and I am starting to realize that I have a bit of a pattern in my taste in Revalink fics. Huh. I'll unpack that later actually.

Skybound Wishes by Baddrummer is unfinished (unlike most of the fics I've recommended here) but y'all. Y'all it makes me lose my shit in so many ways because I am a SLUT for creative fix-it fics and gratuitous weaving-in of references to other games in ways that still respect the established canon but respect all of it, y'know, not just doing the TOTK thing of "actually nothing pre-BOTW matters anymore and neither does BOTW lol."

...I am starting to realize there may be a reason why I don't have a lot of TOTK recs. Also if this post is starting to sound unhinged and disconnected that's probably because I'm bouncing between Tumblr and studying for one of my finals like a ping pong ball.

But I do have one really, really big fic rec for TOTK. Y'all should check out Show Me the World Outside by IllusionOfDeath. The Sages get to do things, the Divine Beasts don't just vanish without a word, the Champions get actual recognition, and you can tell that the author is the Linguistics Georg (affectionate) of the fanfic world.

Anyway I think I will shill myself a bit too since you gave me permission to anon! If you read no other Zelda fics by me, may I recommend no one ever mentions fear, a fic that... it really was, in a lot of ways, a love letter to the fics in the fandom that I'd read and loved before. You've got the Champions getting to live and have nice things, you've got Revali being a dumbass (affectionate), you've got gay shit, you've got Problems Being Caused by the Yiga Clan in the background.

...Oh god this post is getting. A little longer than I meant for it to I've realized. Um. I love fanfic and tbh if you end up reading everything I've recced and still want more, my bookmarks on AO3 are public and I tend to bookmark just about everything I've read and liked enough to want to find again.

Hey! It seems a new Heracles novel will be published, called "HERC" (well, it is announced as a Greek Myth Retelling but they had to choose the Roman name LOL) The subtitle is "Hero, Huband, Father, Monster, Villain"... How can you naked Heracles the villain? It's quite ruthless, if we remember that the craziest shit he did (killing his wife & sons) was done because of Hera's magic. What are your feelings about it? I read somewhere that it's being announced as a "Querer Romance" (Heracles' "friend" Hylas and his nephew Iolaus will be included, it seems), but I don't have any hope about the nivel portraying gay relationships in a positive light TBH...

In such books the elements of the og myth look sooo thin in this retelling. Usually the worldbuilding is "yeah there was a palace with columns, and it was summer and it was SO HOT, and there was the sea and they were eating olives and praying to zeus like they are protestant Christians".

Not only my hopes are not high for this but the facepalming percent for this will also probably be high. I mean, creativity is good but I challenge you to go to random Greeks on the street and explain this book to them. The facial expressions you're gonna get will be PRICELESS

Another reason why this trend annoys me is that the readers will be like "omg I LOVE Greek myths" and their definition of "LOVE!" is "I'm reading every western absurd fantasy scenario available on the market, and have no idea about how the og culture sees its hero. This book is enough for me and apparently Hercules sucks".

Just...make another book at this point, with ancient magic and queer couples!

Honestly, his tail looks more like meat and skin than scales to me, too. It just looks more meaty than scaley. Though maybe if it was a lot of little tiny scales that are super malleable... it does have the potential to feel amazing... like let me run my fingers across that, you know?

I don't know enough about biology to know whether or not what you're proposing would make sense scientifically, so let's just assume that it does!

I never once thought of the tail streaks as being blood vessels, but that makes sense! I mean they do kinda look like veins, don't they? And I see, so the black part is the skin but by the end it reveals all the teal insides! That's a pretty cool headcanon!

While I don't know if I could actually consume some of Barb's tail, I think if anyone could make it tasty, he could. If it's able to fall off and grow back, then I could see him using it for food. And my first thought was he'd only do that if he was desperate, but then I was like well maybe it's considered a delicacy? Tail a la Barbatos, you know what I'm saying? Roasted in a creamy sauce that only Barbatos himself can make. I think it might interesting if his flesh was only poisonous to humans.

I don't think blood in general tastes good (at least I haven't had any that tasted good lol), but again we're dealing with a demon here. And I kinda think Barbatos could make anything tasted good. Maybe he serves the tail with blood sauce.

That sounds gross, but maybe it's not? I'm the kind of person where I'm willing to try anything once. So if Barbatos served me such a dish and I knew what it was, I'd still try some.

Maybe he gets creative and serves multiple things like tail jerky or tail-loaf or perhaps cheeseburgers with tail patties.

•Hawks thinks your quirk is quite cool and useful in everyday stuff

•You didn’t go into the hero business, but you’ve found other good uses for your quirk

•Like when you and Hawks moved in together, you could basically pack everything you owned into one bag, because you could just make everything super small

•He thought that was super handy

•Hawks has a bit of a thing for people who are bigger than him, so you pushing him against the wall and just towering over him is definitely something he likes

•You like to change your size depending on the situation, but you’re usually just your normal height, since it’s not usually necessary to change that

•A lot of your clothes are made from material that can accommodate you changing your size so them tearing isn’t usually a problem

•And of course you can just change the size of your clothes with your body if you feel like it

•Hawks doesn’t really mind if you make him small, it’s honestly kinda fun sometimes, but you’ve made a deal you only do it to him at home, so if something like a villain attack happens he doesn’t need to be changed back

•Hawks has a few of his feathers scattered around the apartment, so if he doesn’t feel like flying he can just sit on the feather and control it, getting around that way

•It’s honestly pretty adorable

•Also if he’s being really annoying and whiny like he can sometimes be, especially when he doesn’t get enough affection, you can just shrink him down and he sit on your shoulder

•When he’s sitting there, he likes to lean against your neck and play with your hair or whisper things into your ear

•You usually can’t stand that for very long, because his wings tickle your neck and ear so you just give in and return him to his normal size and go cuddle with him

•Dabi thinks your quirk is pretty useless, at least until you got creative with it when you were doing some stuff for the League

•Let’s just say that the bottom of your boot is often pretty bloody and gorey

•If you shrink Dabi, at all, like even a little bit, he would most likely threaten you with a very painful death

•He doesn’t like when people have any kind of control over him, so being so small someone could step on him? Big fucking no

•It’s more often that you make yourself small and sit on his shoulder, though it’s pretty rare that he’d let you do that

•He does think it’s incredibly funny when you use your quirk on Spinner or Toga though

•If you want attention or he’s been a bitch you shrink his clothes sometimes, but you do it just enough that you can claim it shrunk in the wash

•Dabi of course doesn’t believe this and complains about it until you make his clothes the right size again

•Doing this to his shoes is also fucking funny, but then you’ll have to to be good at dodging said shoe when it comes flying at you, possibly burning

~Bakugou Katsuki~

•Bakugou is often a victim of a bit of a “time out”, which means he gets shrunk down to small enough to sit on your palm

•You can’t exactly just put him a high shelf, because his quirk would allow him to just basically fly down from there

•So what you do is you get the “time out shirt”, which is a shirt with a breast pocket, so he just has to sit in there until he calms down

•His head is just peeking out from the pocket and he’s glaring at everyone else

•It’s a miracle he actually agrees to stay in there, but miracles happen sometimes

•He can listen to your heartbeat when he puts his ear against your chest, which is actually the only reason why he doesn’t argue with you too much about the whole “time out” thing

•Afterwards he’s a bit huffy thought, because of course he has to act like he hates it

•He does love being so close to you though

•He’s strong of course, but your quirk makes moving and rearranging furniture a breeze

•You’re not exactly a hero, you’re more of a search and rescue worker if that makes sense, since you basically do hero work but you don’t actually have the qualifications to be called a pro-hero

•It’s easy for you to get into small places and search for people on collapsed buildings and such

•Bakugou also thinks it’s super cute when you make his shirts too big for you so you can just go around the apartment in a big hoodie or t-shirt

•Depending on the piece of clothing, you don’t even always need to change its size

Do you consider yourself a lore breaking, lore bending or lore adhering roleplayer? Does this adherence to lore depend on the kind of lore you're exploring with your characters; i.e. you play fast and loose with ideas xiv has yet to develop, but you tend to pay close attention to the fleshed out ideals? Is there lore you have modified that you're proud of and would share here?

I view lore as a starting point for me to jump off from and make my own. Always have.

I find strict adherence to game canon for its own sake creatively suffocating and always have, in every setting I've ever written in. It’s pretty much entirely because I grew up on DMing and writing in Forgotten Realms, which took a very DIY approach back in the day that was heavily encouraged by its creator. Everyone's Realms were equally valid, according to Word of God, and there were often intentional "blanks" left in sourcebooks for the DM to fill. These books emphasized over and over again that the DM was the ultimate authority on canon, not TPTB or the novels or anything else. That philosophy has informed my approach to worldbuilding in the transformative fandom sense for the last 30 years. That and being a queer Black femme of color who is very rarely satisfied by canon narratives rife w racially problematic tropes. I change things to make a space for myself and my characters and the stories I want to tell, by necessity. FFXIV is no different in that respect.

That said, I don't smash SE canon just to smash it either. Despite how bonkershits a lot of Gisèle's canon appears on the surface (eg. post-war Ishgard's constitutional monarchy with King Aymeric), everything I change has been carefully considered and engineered for as much internal consistency as possible. As much as I operate on Rule of Cool, I need things to make sense for me to have fun.

But I am distinctly not a roleplayer, for this and many other reasons. I'm strictly a fic writer, and I don't ever collab with people. The world Gisèle operates in is constructed entirely for her, and my own enjoyment, by design. So no one is forced to deal with my stuff if they don't like it.

That said, King Aymeric is probably the lore I’m most proud of. I wrote a ficlet for ffxivwrite last year on it here, but the cliffs notes: Aymeric invoked the ancient covenant between man and dragon when begging Hraesvelgr’s aid against Nidhogg and vowed he would restore it, but Hraes said that because that covenant was broken by an Elezen king, only an Elezen king could restore it. Hraes was wily though, it wasn’t just upholding weird draconic custom in saying that. His ulterior motive was to make Aymeric guarantee his people would be united enough not to turn on the Dravanians once Nid was handled. the end result is that Aymeric restored the Ishgardian throne (“The Azure Throne”, as a nod to Haldrath), but as a largely unifying figurehead/ceremonial position with Parliament strictly defining the role of the king. Artoirel is Lord Speaker of the House of Lords. Aymeric’s still LC of the temple knights in addition to his royal duties. He wasn’t giving that up lol.

making a constitutional monarchy plausible in the context of the story was challenging and I think I’ve done a solid job of it tbh. I wanted to lean into the Arthurian romance vibes of HW but also solve the fundamental problem I had w how it ended, which is that I don’t think it’s a terribly realistic scenario for ppl who were under a theocracy for 1000 years. Aymeric essentially having his hand forced by Hraesvelgr solves the issue of why he would restore the throne and tbh I don’t flinch from the complications of squaring that with the revelations about Ishgard’s founding, I think it only plays more into Aymeric’s ambivalence about the role he’s been thrust into.
