Beast Fables: The Many Chimeras of the Horse and other Equids

Returning to the world of Beast Fables, the world of werebeasts and mermaids, another batch of Chimeras, featuring the horse and other equids!

Originally this was meant to be MUCH more extensive, but I had to seperate into more parts saved for later, because the horse is SUCH an important critter IRL, and in-universe the sheer diversity of chimeric morphs for the horse means that the cultural importance and application of them in-universe is going to be extensive as well.

The progression of Alex and Maliksi's relationship in the comics (feat. Me probably overanalyzing)

(In general or shippy, up to you)

Vol 1: Villain of the week.

He's the supernatural culprit in Case 2 and she catches him. That's basically it, though it's an important detail that he's the prince of a tribe the Treses are allied with.

Vol 3: Owing a favor

She uses her last wish from winning the race to get him to help her fight Talagbusao. That's it. We don't see them converse or anything, it's all very straightforward.

This goes differently in the Netflix show where he's more involved. There are no favors or wishes and he goes to her to personally deliver a message from his dad. He also outright expresses his support for her even though he technically shouldn't ("I won't tell if you won't.")

Vol. 5: A romantically interested nuisance

Maliksi's very involved in this arc, in fact it starts with him becoming a vigilante, which interferes with Alex's work. She's very understandably pissed at him and sees him as nothing but an annoyance that gets in her way.

This interaction^ in particular makes it seem like she doesn't even take him seriously. I sense so much hostility from those panels, and from both sides even!

He flirts with her throughout this arc but she turns him down, of course. He saves her life near the end, and while she's still aloof to him, she invites him back to base for information.

Vol. 6: Official allies

It seems she changed her mind about his superhero attempts because at the start of this volume, she outright calls him for help, unlike in the previous one where she told him to stay out of it. I'm guessing this is cus she saw how useful he was to have around in battle.

He's basically become part of the team at this point, enough for them to have an SOS codeword, and for him to tag along for the next case (which we see at the end) without being asked or him offering.

As for their personal relationship, and this is the part where I start over analyzing, but Alex's expressions seem much friendlier than the previous volume where she was hostile because he was a nuisance who she already had a past history reprimanding.

1) they're sitting next to eachother fdjldjjddj, 2) she listens to him instead of ignoring him (especially in that first panel where her brother gives a speech and she's looking at Maliksi tho idk why, unless like the Kambal he's looking at Seepul who's sitting across from him??), and 3) she doesn't look pissed at him, instead having an expression that I can only describe as "open"

In the end, he flirts with her again and she still turns him down, but again, doesn't look annoyed anymore (not like in vol 5) (also notice how in vol 5 he didn't get to ride with her, but now he does just like how she told him to stay out of the way but now calls him for help)

In general, I really like how Volume 6 shakes up the status quo! This whole time it's been the trio of Trese + The Kambal tackling cases on their own and occasionally calling in a favor from an ally but in this volume, they assemble a team and then all share a meal together in the end. It's really fun and epic to see!

There are many places in the Philippines where sightings of local cryptids are often talked about, the City of Muntinlupa is no stranger to it. Here are artworks of known cryptids in Muntinlupa with a millennial twist, as seen in Museo ng Muntinlupa page.

The Tikbalang - is probably one of the most popular mythological creatures in the Philippines. According to stories, these beings have half-human, half-horse bodies. It has two versions: one with a horse's head and the other with a human-like face. Based on folklore, whoever rides on the back of the tikbalang and manages to pull out its golden hair from its nape will be able to tame it and serve as its master. Despite their powerful and fearsome appearance, tikbalangs do not harm or kill people. They simply enjoy leading or playing with people in the forest.

The "Nuno sa Punso" - are said to be old men with long beards. Their height is likened to that of a three-year-old child. According to other stories, the "nuno" are depicted wearing wide-brimmed hats called "salakot." The "nuno sa punso" are known for inflicting illness upon those who disturb their dwellings. Typically, this results in high fever, severe body pains, and swelling of private body parts.

The Sirena - In legends and on television, mermaids are commonly depicted as beings with beautiful and gentle faces, long hair, glistening skin, and a melodious voice. They are considered guardians of the seas, and whoever disturbs their domain will be punished and dragged into the depths of the ocean. Their enchanting voices attract men, and this is what they use to lure those they fancy into their world. In The City of Muntinlupa, there are often folk stories about mermaids being sighted in Jamboree Lake.

The "Tiktik" - belongs to the family of "manananggal." They are commonly depicted as creatures resembling birds that only fly at night to seek food. It's also believed that their color is as black as crows. They are known to favor consuming babies from pregnant women's wombs. The "tiktik" got its name from the sound it makes. When you hear its loud screech, you can be sure that the "tiktik" is still far away. But as the sound gets softer and softer, the "tiktik" is getting closer to you!

The "Kapre" - typically resides in trees and forests. It's said that they often play tricks on people who find themselves near their dwellings by suddenly misleading them in the woods and mountains. Kapres are described as large, man-like beings covered in dark hair. Some say they are only clad in loincloths, while others claim they are naked and that only leaves cover their private parts. They are often depicted carrying tobacco, the scent of which tends to attract people's attention. When a Kapre is attracted to a woman, he befriends her and follows her for life.

- 1st slide - So this evolved a great deal, I initially wanted to transform the Jeopardy meme into a cover and keep it in the MCU as like a Shang-Chi speaking out for us. But Ike has actually never been in a Marvel film (as far as I know), so I brought his Suicide Squad character over. At which point I was like - well if I’m going to do that, I should bring over any Filipina/o characters from the DCU. Hence Ella Jay Basco (Cassandra) and Ivory Aquino (Alysia) But then I was like, something didn’t feel right - well if this is a multiverse thing, I felt like I needed to ask for Kuya and Bayani to be there. And, of course, the usuals are here - Jacob B (Ned), Ned’s Lola, Ginger G (Nikki), Dave B (Drax), Yssa (Sonya), Eugene C (Casey), Jane R(Ayla), Hailee(Kate), and Iris(Wave)!

- 2nd slide - The Halloween cover. Really wanted to do some of our mythological creatures, but in that old Jack Kirby style. When I started these covers, the intent was to keep with the old school style, but I feel like I’ve strayed a bit. By the way, forget horror masters.. man our folklore digs deep in some really messed up stuff. Have you guys read what a Tiyanik is/does? Man either the most demonic things ever just exist in the Phils, or our ancestors got the most twisted creative imagination.
