Waiting for you // Chris Sturniolo

Chris Sturniolo x fem!reader
contains: fluff, stressed out reader, use of y/n, flashbacks (in italics), 1.2k words
a/n: its been so long since I write so if it looks cranky, don’t blame me. Idk honestly 🤷🏻‍♀️ (no summary cuz I'm lazy lol)
I reach for the box under my bed, it has been covered in dust meaning it has been down there since forever. Bumping my head in the process of taking the box, I let out a wince, “ouch, this damn bed. I’m throwing you away one day I swear,” I muttered, rolling my eyes. I wipe the dust away to see the hidden words under those dust. ‘Love’ was written on the lid of the box, “I don’t remember having this before” furrowing my eyebrows, trying to remember anything.
The song from my playlist continues to play, starting a sad tune. I turn to where I place my phone, confused as to why there’s some kind of sad song and to be precise Taylor Swift? I shrug it away and stares at the box in front of me, I’ve been cleaning my room since this afternoon and without noticing the time, the sun has started to set. Plopping on my bed, I take the lid off. My smiles starts disappearing just how he did…
~
I laugh at him when he starts cracking some jokes out of nowhere. We’ve been walking for 30 minutes after our date night. Both us close to each other, my purse in his hand. “Also Nick face was literally covered in it, we had to make a TikTok,” Chris laughed, swinging my hand with his softly.
~
“Happy Birthday my pretty girl. I’m sorry I had to! It was the plan, baby,” he winked, handing me the flower lego to me “my love will last just how this flower last” I laughed at his cheesy pickup lines, rolling my eyes playfully “I really thought you forgot about it, Chris. You better don’t do this again” I squint my eyes at him. “We’ll see princess, we’ll see.” He said, shrugging his shoulder making the ‘who knows’ face. I slap his arm playfully, he eventually starts laughing and bringing me closer into his arms, “I love you, y/n. Even the world can’t describe it”
~
“This is so good, baby. Cook more often please please please” he begged, chewing the food I made for him. Chris stands up from his seat and walks towards me “Thank you, baby” He hugs me from behind and lift me off from the floor to twirl me. I laugh lightly “Chrisss, put me down” I whine playfully and he set me back on the floor, giving my face all the kiss it needed.
~
A solemn tear fell down my cheek, snapping me out of it. I blink my eyes a few times to stop it but the tears keep flowing down my face like a river escaping a dam. I try wiping it away as the door of my room creaks open, someone just came into my room. Luckily my back was facing the door, giving me times to prepare myself and turns around once I think I’m presentable enough. Nick stood there at my door frame, concerns could be seen on his face, “Nick? Hey, what are you doing here? Should’ve tell me before barging into my room,” I chuckled, eyes avoiding his
“You’ve been crying.” Nick stated, heading towards where I’m seated. One look of the things in my hands, he knew it straightaway. “Missing him? Everyday I passed his room, I could hear him sobbing his heart out. He still loves you, you know? Let him in again?” He suggests, rubbing my shoulder softly. Bringing me closer to his side, laying my head on his shoulder. I stare at the necklace which happened to be in the box, being on the top of the other.
“How? How, Nick? He was the one who ended it, I got no time to stop him from doing so!” I cry out, burying my face in his shoulder. My whole body is shaking from the amount of tears and sobs coming out of me. “Yet you still cry about it, y/n. It’s been what? Almost a year and you two still mourn for each other. I never believe you when you said you moved on from him. It was and still is in your eyes.” Nick whispered into my ears, his hand never stops rubbing my shoulder.
“It hurts Nick, I still want him but God knows how my brain despise him when he said those words to me but my heart says the opposite” I sobbed, pouring my heart out. Nick only nods and comfort me softly, whispering sweetness to me till I slowly calm down from all the loud sob, non stopping flows of tears. My fingers taking the necklace from the box and turn it around. An engrave of ‘I love you - c.s’. I let my thumb stays on the engraving.
Minutes of staring it, I unclasp the hook and place it around my neck. Nick only observe my movement, saying absolutely nothing. I sigh lowly, resting the necklace on my collarbone. Sounds of a phone ringing starts to play, Nick take his phone out of the pocket of his trousers. The caller ID shows that it was Chris. I nod towards the phone, telling Nick to answer the phone call.
His thumb lingers on the decline button but finally pressing the green button, “Chris? Why’d you call?” He ask, talking to the phone. I shift away from Nick to give them both some privacy. I search for my phone only to be met with the battery logo. Grabbing the charger on the bedside table and plugging it in. “I’ll give you two some times but don’t ask again after this. You better not missed anything or even mess this up again, or I’m killing you myself.” The call comes to an end.
I walk back to my bed and peers at his phone, “what happened?” I asked, picking up the box from the bed and move it into my closet. “Nothing, Chris just asked about the juice from yesterday.” Oh. I nodded out of disappointment and settle down beside him. “Whatever happen, just let it flow naturally. Do not push it away. You better hear me out this time, y/n.” He said, looking into my eyes with seriousness.
My brow furrows softly, confusion starts to spread on my face, “okay? Anyway why did you come here all of a sudden?”
“You weren’t answering the text I gave you and all my calls went straight to the voicemail. You expect me not to panic knowing you” He said, crossing his arms. “Anyway I’m gonna go buy some takeout with Matt, you want the usual?”
“The usual I guess?” I shrugged, “up to you though, I don’t mind”
Nick wave at me and left me alone in my room with my clouded thoughts. Sighing, I rose to my feet and drag myself to the bathroom to wash my face. My eyes are a bit red and puffy after the crying session and all. The sound of my door bell rings all over my house, I dry my face quickly. Rushing down the stairs to open the door. Time seeming to slow down, feeling as if I can hear my own heartbeat. There he stood, My Chris or what used to be. The tears in my eyes threatening to fall, “Chris…” I whispered-

Shuri x Black!fem!reader
Inspired by Love Language by SZA
warning: sappy stuff, angsty in the beginning
A/N: thank you @szalipcombo for giving me something to write and another song in my 61 hour playlist 🤧🤧 also ahh 42 followers 😆😆 i like this one but at the time I feel sort insecure about idk
Tumblr media
Having lonely days and nights had unfortunately become an average day for you with Shuri not sticking around long in the mornings, if she even made it to bed that night, and maybe coming home to sleep for a few hours. You couldn’t blame her with all the events that had happened between Namor’s attack and her becoming the black panther but ever since you hadn’t been getting as much attention.
It got to the point where you would lay on her side when she wasn’t there or wear her clothes just to feel closer to her. She still told you how she loved you and how grateful she was for you in the moments that she was able to be with you. However, she had been quiet and closed off lately which again you couldn’t blame her for but you were starting to get desperate. Sometimes you went into the lab just to watch her in her element and left before she caught you knowing she probably knew you were there anyway with her now enhanced senses.
It was one of the rare nights that Shuri came home early enough to catch you awake. She had to come home because of how exhausted she was and basically collapsed into bed the moment she came in. She woke up a few hours later, around 3 am, surprised to see you awake. “Y/N?” She said, rubbing her eyes while turning to face you who was reading a book. You hummed in response instantly putting all of your focus on Shuri. “What are you doing up?” She said, sitting up a bit. “I just wanted to finish this book.” You said, doing your best to conceal the fact that you were lying. She already had a lot to deal with and you didn’t want to add more on top of it.
She gave you a stern look knowing you were lying and took the book out of your hands and set it on the bedside table. She turned to you, expecting an answer. “I know you love me and I’m not trying to make it seem like you don’t..but I want you to show me. I mean, I barely see you anymore. I come to the lab and sometimes I just watch you. I just…I want you to be around.” You said, biting your lip and avoiding her eyes in slight embarrassment for your glorified way of saying ‘I want attention’ and slightly stalkerish confession. There was a small moment of silence as Shuri thought for a bit. “You know that you can tell me anything right? And even if you don’t want to, I’m still here.” You said, grabbing her hand and giving it a slight squeeze making Shuri instantly pull you on top of her into a hug. She had been feeling her guilt build up every day not just over not spending time with you but with the death of her family and the attack on Wakanda. Still, she refused to talk about it or think about it and focus on the work that needed to be done and shut you out but oh how she wanted to hold you and for you to hold her and to tell you everything. She was hoping one day she would have the courage to come clean with you but you beat her to it.
You stayed like this for a good minute with Shuri rubbing circles on your back until she responded to your earlier confession. “I’m so sorry I made you feel that way, I do love you. More than you know.. I just have a lot to do and a lot to…heal from.” She said, now rubbing up and down your back while you completely relaxed in her arms. “I know but don’t feel like you have to rush for me.” You said, tilting your head to look up at her. “It’s no excuse. I want to be honest with you like you are with me. I promise I’ll do better.” She said, giving you a forehead kiss.
“You know what you could do?” You said, looking up at her. “What?” She said, thinking you were being serious. “I think you should get more than 5 hours of sleep.” You said with a bright smile that lightened up the mood, making her look away from you because she knew you were right. “I don’t think that will be possible.” She said, looking at the time. “Just sleep in, besides you have to make it up to me and we need to catch up.” You said, rolling off of her and cuddling into her side. Her face dropped to look at you with a deadpan look. “What does that mean?” Shuri asked sitting up more but you dragged her back down closer to you. “Don’t worry about it, baby.” You said, turning around before looking back which was your infamous sign to let her know that you wanted her to be the big spoon.
“You’re not making me feel better about it.” She said, chuckling. “Never said I would.” You said. You assumed she finally settled down to go to sleep as her arms moved around your waist only to be surprised when you felt her fingers tickle your sides. As you laughed your heart out, Shuri couldn’t help cheesing at hearing your laugh and seeing you smile so much. It didn’t take long for you to fold and apologize, making Shuri happily oblige. “Goodnight, my love.” She said giving you a cheek kiss and pulling the cover on the top of the two of you “Goodnight.” You mumbled, satisfied with how everything went.

I’d had enough as I walked up the stairs to my room, slamming the door closed. I grabbed as much of my clothes as I could and I stuffed it into bags, this fight was the breaking point. I glance over at Red, who looks deflated and defeated with sadness.
“I can’t stay here anymore,” I say as it floats over to give me a hug. “I would take you with me, but Stephen needs you.”
Red flicks its collar and shrugs, as if it’s saying: “I guess someone has to stick with him.”
We had spent the last few hours arguing and the venom of each word that hit between us, it did more than sting– the pain was unbearable. It all started with the mention of Christine and the question of if he loved her as much as he had with me and his silence made me snap after he simply had brushed it off.
I zipped up my suitcase and I sighed as I gathered myself enough to make the descent downstairs so I could walk out of the door and never look back again. I walk down the steps, and suddenly I pause as I hear what sounds like music playing from the speakers.
Another love taken to the grave
Another one goes right down the drain
I keep making all the same mistakes
Running out of reasons I can blame
Thought I had a heart of gold
Everything I touch turns to stone
Is it my fault I always end up alone?
Is that how he sees himself? I thought as tears fill my eyes as I turn to follow the music that plays through the walls of The Sanctum, I step into the living room.
There I see Stephen, collapsed with his back against the wall. He had his head buried in his hands and his body shook with sobs of his own. I watch, unsure of how to approach him and also because of the tension in the air around us in the room.
Just grab your things and leave, Kat. He’s not worth it anymore. I hear the voice from within whisper in my ears darkly.
Maybe I'm just difficult
Maybe I'm impossible
Maybe I'm just one step over the edge
You're one foot out the door
Maybe I'm emotional
Too much to handle
Or
Maybe I'm unlovable
Is there anyone left to believe?
Is there any good still left in me?
I keep slipping further underneath
I just want a love that never leaves
“You really know how to pull me back, Strange.” I say softly with tears cascading down my cheeks and I see his head snap up at me, eyes red from tears of his own that he’s shed.
“You didn’t leave,” Stephen’s voice comes out softly in shock as he looks at me.
“You always find a way to reel me back in,” I set my bags down and I kneel down in front of him, hurt crossing my features as our eyes met. “Do you realize how close I was to walking out of that door? I don’t know why I keep coming back. All we do is hurt each other and I know there’s a reason as to why you metaphorically cling onto Christine, but if you won’t tell me– why am I still here?”
Stephen takes my face within his hands and as a tear slips down his cheek, the movement makes me want to shrug him away but I can’t. Not now. His thumbs caress my cheeks.
“Do you know why I’m like this, darling?” His voice is a gentle murmur as he brushes strands of my hair back behind my ear. “It's because I have a fear of failing you. When I get too close to someone, I start doing all of these horrible things and push them away. I’ve done it to Christine and I’m doing it to you. It hurts me more knowing that it’s happening with you.”
“I really don’t want to put you on the spot, but I want you to think about this– If it came down to myself or Christine, who would you choose?” I ask, letting the ultimatum sink in.
Silence fills the space for a few minutes until I hear him take a deep breath to calm his tears and he clears his throat to cover the break in his voice.
“You, Katrina.” He whispers. “I will always choose you.”
A spark of shock runs through my veins but it also makes a warmth run through me as well. I reach for his hand, letting our fingers intertwine, my thumb caressing his scars.
Thought I had a heart of gold
Everything I touch turns to stone
Is it my fault I always end up alone?
Well maybe I'm just difficult
Maybe I'm impossible
Maybe I'm just one step over the edge
You're one foot out the door
Maybe I'm emotional
Too much to handle
Or
Maybe I'm unlovable
Unlovable
“Prove it to me, then.” I say. “Prove to me that you’ll only choose me, Stephen.”
Suddenly, he conjures up a rose with a bit of his magic but not just any rose. It’s a Black Baccara Rose, my favorite. They’re such a deep and dark red that in the sunlight they look almost black as night and it makes my heart melt. He holds it between us in his fingers as he looks into my eyes.
“So, this is becoming like Beauty and The Beast?” I chuckle at him. He mock glares at me and lets out a deep sigh.
“This is the only way for me to prove to you how much I love you, no matter what.” Stephen explains. “When all the petals are gone, there’s no more second chances. I’ll let you go without saying a word to get you back, sweetheart. But that’s only if it happens.”
He summons a vase with his magic and he sets the rose inside of the vase, which then gets transported into my room and put onto my dresser. He takes my hands in his own and pulls me into his chest, my head resting against his shoulder and I could feel the amount of sorrow he felt over the entire fight we had while I’d been in his embrace, he places a tender kiss on the top of my head.
“There’s not a single word for me to be able to express how sorry I am, Kitten,” Stephen murmurs as he rests his forehead on mine. “But I hope that this is enough for me to show you.”
“I know, Tiger,” I whisper as I rest against him for a moment, wrapping my arms around his neck, he grins at hearing me call him by his pet name. “You’re lucky that I still love you enough to forgive you for your mistakes.”
A gentle gasp escapes from within his throat as he places a soft and deep kiss on my lips, my fingers running through the gray strands of his hair as we hold onto each other, our fight finally ceasing and forgotten.
His lips break away from mine and his arms wrap around me. "I love you too, Katrina. I always will."
__________
When I walk back into my room, I see that Red is twirling around in excitement over me choosing to stay and as Stephen’s walking by, it takes off right after him. I raise a brow and snicker softly as I lean against the doorframe, crossing my arms.
“Ow! Ow! What the hell, Cloak?!” I burst out laughing as I watch Red start to smack Stephen repeatedly and harshly.
“Just so you know, Stephen.” I say as I raise my hands up. “This was not my idea at all, this was all Red.”
I hear a portal open and Wong walks in from Kamar-Taj, closing it behind him and he sees Stephen getting smacked around by Red and he raises both of his brows in question at me.
“Why is the Cloak attacking Strange?” Wong asks as he stands next to me. I smile at him sheepishly as I lean in toward him.
“It’s teaching him a lesson,” I whispered in his ear and Wong puts his hand over his mouth as he keeps his laughter at bay.
“Alright! I deserve that.” Stephen says and giggles escape my lips. This might have been a rough patch but I knew deep down that we would always find a way through it all.

Tumblr media
It was late at night, like 2 am late, when you and Gwen were standing in the middle of the kitchen. You were both glancing over a promising brownie recipe from a random website that you had pulled up on your laptop about 20 minutes ago.
Gwen remained silent as she rested her chin on the top of your head while you rested your chin on your forearms (which were resting on the clean countertop). Your eyes scanned over the method meticulously, trying to figure out where you two should start first.
Thankfully, you had the right amount of ingredients lying around from your previous bake.
"So, what do we do first?" Gwen asks as she lifts her chin off of your head so that you can stand up straight to preheat the oven.
Gwen had come over to stay at yours for the weekend to keep you company (or at least up until your parents came back from their trip). She's been hanging around at your place since school finished on Friday; thankfully, her dad didn't seem to mind her staying here with you for a few days.
You two had made the joint decision to do something other than watch repeat episodes of a TV show when 1:30 am ticked by on the clock. You weren't sure what you were going to bake, but all you knew was that anything at this point was better than watching TV.
Now, the two of you were standing in the kitchen, enjoying each other's company as you prepared to bake brownies.
You and Gwen were bathed in the low and warm light that was being emitted from the kitchen and the blue light being emitted from your laptop. The warm glow accentuates the beautiful and warm smile that Gwen always wore—the one that made your heart melt.
"It says here that we melt the butter." You reply as you unwrap the block of unsalted butter, with the occasional glance back at the recipe. "Oh, and the broken-up dark chocolate."
Your fingers curl around the curved edges of the glass bowl to pull it closer to you so that you can dump the butter and cooking chocolate in. Both of these had been measured to the recipe's requirements, so all you had to do was pick it up and move around Gwen to put it in the microwave.
1 minute on the timer.
Aside from the microwave making a noise as it melted the contents, it was silent in the kitchen between the two of you. It's never normally this quiet between the two of you, but you just blamed that on both of you being overtired.
"It's way too quiet in here," Gwen grumbles quietly as the microwave pings.
She takes this as her cue to lean over your laptop and spend the next few minutes scrolling through your plethora of playlists until she comes across one filled with songs that you both know and like. She grins to herself before pressing the volume button on the top right corner a few times.
At max volume, one of Lana Del Rey's many songs begins playing.
The soothing melody encompasses the kitchen; in an instant, the quiet atmosphere that settled between you two shifted into a far more lively one.
Completely lost in the moment, the two of you begin to dance along to the beat of the music, both of you momentarily forgetting about being overtired from staying up too long.
You grin as a burst of energy washes over you before humming along to the tune as you pull the glass bowl out of the microwave and set it down on the countertop to let the mixture cool down.
On the other side of the kitchen, Gwen was busy weighing out the sugar while carefully grabbing three eggs from the carton.
You move to click the metal whisks into place on the hand mixer as she does so before plugging it in and sliding it over to her. She smiles in return before picking it up and lowering it into the unmixed egg and sugar.
"Love the song choice, Gwen." You comment as you move to read some more of the recipe.
"Mhm, you would; it's your playlist." She fires back teasingly.
She flicks the switch on the hand mixture to mix the eggs and sugar for a few minutes before turning the whisk off and placing it down.
Gwen slowly creeps up behind you, shooting you that warm smile from behind, before she slowly snakes her arm around your waist while moving her free hand to gently pinch your hip with a breathy chuckle. You yelp out in surprise before biting the inside of your cheek and letting out a chuckle as a reply.
You and Gwen have been best friends since before you could even remember (a little before Peter joined you two), so it wasn't uncommon for you two to do stuff along these lines.
Best friends, that's all you were. So if you were just friends, then... why was your heart skipping a beat every time she got close to you or touched you? Why did your mouth run dry and your palms grow clammy when she was around?
Something tells you that these are not the normal feelings that best friends should be feeling for one another, and–
"Hello? Earth to Y/n!" Gwen’s voice echos and comes into focus as she waves her hand in front of your face. She was holding the bowl of the now-mixed sugar and eggs in front of you; she wore a look of uncertainty. “Does this look alright to you?”
“Oh, yeah, it does.”
With her question luring you out of your spiralling trail of thoughts, the two of you soon began working together like clockwork.
The two of you, halfway through, had swapped roles, meaning that Gwen was now back to weighing out the rest of the dry ingredients on the weighing scale while you took over the whisking and carefully folded the butter and chocolate mixture into the pale mousse-like one.
The more time that passed, you could feel yourself waking up and simultaneously relaxing as the two of you continued to whizz around the kitchen.
You continued to hum along to the different songs as they bleed into one after another while glancing several times over at the recipe to see where next.
"Are you alright, Y/n/n?" Gwen asks while she weighs out the cocoa powder but she stops for a minute to glance over at you with a raised brow. “You seem quieter than usual; is something up?”
You were busy folding the two different mixtures into one big one when her questions struck. The butterflies in your stomach became more prominent as you unravelled the chocolate bars from their wrappers and began chopping them up into chunks with a knife.
"Hm?" You hum as you glance over at Gwen while thinking of the words you want to reply with. “Oh, yeah, I’m fine; I'm just tired and lost in my thoughts, I guess.”
Was it far from the truth? Slightly.
In all honesty, you are starting to believe that you've developed feelings for Gwen that go beyond how friends should feel. Everything about her captivated you. From the way she flashes you that sweet smile (the one that shows off the gap in her front teeth) right down to the way she so passionately dedicates her life and free time to saving New York.
Gwen didn't seem too convinced, but she shrugged anyway. "Alright, if you say so." She replies as she tips the dry ingredients, one by one, into your now-folded mixture.
Gwen's luck runs out there and then, though. Forgetting that her personal strength has increased since being bitten, Gwen goes to gently open the bag of flour, only to rip the bag in half.
The flour mingles with the air and covers every surface in the kitchen (but not the actual mixture) in a thick white cloud.
Thankfully, it looks like there is enough left for the actual mixture.
“Oh crap!” She exclaims in shock as she notices that you are covered head to toe with the soft flour.
You freeze up for a good minute or two as your mind catches up with what has just happened. Your hands reach up to swipe away the flour that coats your face so you can open your eyes again; when you do, you are immediately met with her blue eyes staring at you.
Gwen immediately bites down on her bottom lip to suppress the urge to burst into laughter, and when you let out a loud and cheerful laugh—the type that hurts your sides so much—she lifts her teeth out of her bottom lip and immediately joins in.
Her laughter was infectious. Just the sound of her laughter echoing in your ears brought a sense of warmth and happiness that lingered long after the flour had settled.
You had to physically stop yourself from laughing anymore just to get your words out.
“You’re lucky we still have enough flour.” You reply jokingly, still quietly giggling, as you begin tousling your hair to get the remaining bits of flour out of it.
“I’ll get the broom,” Gwen mutters after her own laughter died down.
She disappears out of the kitchen to slowly make her way through your apartment in search of the broom. She returns to the kitchen five minutes later with the broom in hand.
And just as quickly, she begins to slowly drag the broom across the light mess while you continue to titter to yourself.
“Sorry ‘bout that.” She mumbles as she rests the broom against the nearest wall and rubs the back of her neck out of embarrassment.
“Don't stress about it, honey. Accidents happen.”
"You got to admit... it was kind of funny though," Gwen adds with a small smirk.
"Mhm, for you." You add on with a chuckle. "I'm the one that looks like I've just put my head through a cloud."
Gwen snickers at your comment while she makes a move to tip the mixture into the lined baking tray that is resting on the counter.
The music continued to flow effortlessly, with the occasional change into a different song as you picked up the tray of brownie batter and made your way over to the oven. You set a timer on your phone a minute after you push the oven door closed.
You stood in the middle of the kitchen, not sure whether or not you should get started on cleaning up when Gwen's arm began to slowly snake around your waist. She rests her chin on your right shoulder as she begins to softly hum along to the song that is playing, which only makes your heart simultaneously leap out of your chest and melt.
Your cheeks were flushed a deep red as you blushed profusely.
"Dance with me, Y/N/N," Gwen whispered in your ear, her warm breath sending shivers down your spine. You agreed very quickly.
With just your luck, the music runs into one with a slightly slower tempo. Very gently, she turns you around so you are face-to-face with her before she begins to sway her hips.
With a small tug on your waist, you soon found yourself following her actions, so you are now both swaying together in the middle of the kitchen. It felt quite intimate.
Gwen's grip around your waist tightens ever so slightly, pulling you closer to her as you both move in sync. You can feel the warmth of her body against yours, and a wave of comfort washes over you.
This is not what best friends do.
You were not expecting her to slip her hand into yours and spin you outward, away from her, before pulling you back in. You welcomed it, though, with a loud shriek of laughter as she continued to pull you along the kitchen floor in tune with the tempo of the song.
Gwen's eyes meet yours, and a subtle smile forms on her lips. "Can I ask you something?"
"Mhm, you can ask me anything." You reply as the two of you continue to innocently dance.
"Are you in love with me?"
Oh, crap! Oh, crap!
"Uh, um, what makes you say that?"
Gwen raises her eyebrow as you stutter out your response to her question, which definitely caught you off guard. Her subtle smile turns into a smirk of amusement.
"First off, friends don't dance in the way we currently are."
At least she agrees.
You hate the fact that a simple question has reduced you to a stammering mess; it makes you feel small.
"We're, uh, just dancing, Gwen." You add on as she continues to dance along with you. "That doesn't mean I love you. I mean, I do love you, but, uh, as a friend."
"Mm, if this is just us 'dancing' then why are you blushing?" She asks in amusement.
Gwen already knows about your crush on her; she has known about it for a good while now. It was safe to say that she definitely felt the same way.
Did Gwen use staying over yours and baking together as an excuse to get close to you and hopefully get you to admit your feelings for one another? 100%. Did it work the way she wanted it to? Oh, yeah.
"I think you love me," Gwen adds with a teasing tone.
"No, no, no, I do not love you, not at all. You are my bes-"
"Just shut up and kiss me already." Gwen chimed in impatiently.
"Yeah, alright, I'll shut up." You murmured in agreement before snaking your arms around her neck.
With your arms around her neck, she dips her head slightly so that your lips are hovering over each other and your warm breaths are mingling. Gwen's lips curl up into a small smile before she closes the tiny distance between the two of you.
Her hands cup your cheeks as your hands rest on the nape of her neck. Your sweet kiss lasts for a few more seconds before the both of you are pulled away by the sound of your phone's timer going off.
"You know I love you, right?" Gwen says as you carefully take the tin out of the oven and leave it to cool down. "I'm always going to love you."
"Did-" Pause. "Did you just quote La La Land?" You ask with a raised brow as she pulls you back towards her. She rests her forehead against yours and gives you a gappy grin.
"Maybe." She replies with a chuckle, making you smile brightly.
"Well then, I'm always going to love you, too."
You both continued to dance across the kitchen floor (to more upbeat songs) until the sun peaked up across the horizon and painted the sky with bursts of pinks, oranges, and yellows. Or until the birds chirped their morning songs.

masterlist        new taglistform
“Hello rock stars.” You greeted them as you walk into the garden of the Maneskin house, where the four of them waited for you.
As soon as they saw you, they all came running to you, pulling you in a group hug. You haven’t seen them in a while now, since they were on a promo tour through Europe. They asked you to join them, but because of your job, you sadly couldn’t join them. Everyone around you called you the fifth member of the band, since you were so close to all of them. Thomas always said that you are free to join them, but you sadly lacked the musical talent to actually do so. Still, you loved to watch them from the crowed or just hang around while they are doing their music stuff.
“We missed you so much Y/n/n”, Ethan said, resting his head on yours.
“I missed you guys too, but you have to stop squeezing me like that I’m running out of air.”, you joked.
They let go of you as they started to laugh.
“Sorry, love, we just really missed you and your dumb jokes.”, Damiano confessed.
“My jokes are the best, I don’t know what your talking about. By the way, we really have to go to an amusement park together now. Seeing all the content of you in that amusement park in Sweden made me jealous. But first let’s go and cook something, I bought some stuff from the local market.”
The five of you made your way inside. Ethan placed the bags full of grocery on the kitchen counter, starting to unpack them. You could see his eyes widen when he saw that you bought fresh bread from his favorite bakery. You just smiled to yourself, because he was just too adorable. After everything laid out on the kitchen counter, you made teams. Damiano and Thomas would make “Bruschetta” and Vic, Ethan and you would cook “Paccheri al Forno”.
“Guys, don’t you dare to ruin the bread!”, you could hear Ethan say to Damiano and Thomas.
After some time, the kitchen already smelled delicious. All of you were having a great time singing along to some classic Italian songs. You were probably acting cliché Italians right now, but who cares, right? As long as they were happy, you didn’t care if you look like the biggest idiots right now. You could tell your friends were tired and glad to be home again. Usually they would never put on some Italian opera, but rather a rock playlist. Who can blame them after travelling a lot of countries in such a short time, having tons of interviews and meeting lots of fans every day.
“You burned the bread, you monsters?”, Ethan pulled you out of your thoughts.
You turned around to see Damiano and Thomas putting two burned slices of bread on a plate. Now you also noticed, the delicious smell of fresh cooked tomato sauce was overshadowed by a burnt smell. Vic watched the scene in front of her, being clearly amused by it.
“Which Idiot does not know how to toast a bread?”, Ethan continued to playfully shout at the two boys.
“The two idiots who haven't toasted bread in a while. Sorry Ethan, I know this is your favorite bread, like ever.” Damiano apologized.
Both Vic and you started to laugh. The way they were being so fake dramatic over the bread was too funny. Ethan helped the other two to toast the bread right, while you and Vic started to set the table. When everything was finished, you but it on the table as well. Damiano opened the bottle of wine you also bought at the market today and opened it.
“God, this is so good and the wine is literally the best.” Thomas stated after he took a bite of his Bruschetta. The others agreed with him. You just sat there smiling again, admiring how happy they all looked. You really missed them.
After dinner, you cleaned everything. At least you tried. Ethan threw a rag right into Damianos face.
“That’s for burning my bread.”, he said
“Hey Thomas also burned your bread”, Damiano groaned, trying to dry his face.
“Well, yes, but I only had one rag, and you were closer.”
“Now I’m fully convinced you never graduated kindergarten.”, you interrupted them.
“Good thing you didn't either.”, Thomas responded.
Now it was you who threw a rag across the room, hitting Thomas with it. You continued to throw the rags at each other, laughing like some maniacs. You started to chase each other through the living room and into the garden. That turned out to be a big mistake, as Vic pushed you into the pool. After you were back at the surface, you gave her a shocked expression, splashing some water at her. Luckily, karma aka Thomas got her back by picking her up and jumping into the pool with her. Damiano and Ethan followed him and also jumped into the pool.
Afterwards, when you all were dry again, you sat on the couch together watching some Italian show. To be honest, you didn't sit on the couch, you were a huge cuddle piled that was placed on the couch. Thomas and Damiano fell a sleep shorty after you went onto the couch. You braided a strand of Ethan's hair.  Vic watched you with a huge smile on her face. The three of you just enjoyed each other's company. You looked at your four best friends and started to smile, being glad you finally had them back.

Knock me out
Pairing: Alpha! Hajime Iwaizumi x Omega! Reader
Genre: Fluff, More Jealous! Alphas! Because we all love that, fights because testosterone is one powerful drug.
Request:  is it alright if i request a scenario with mattsun? (or if you don’t write for him iwa) where their shy little omega comes to visit them at practise because they miss them and oikawa starts flirting with them. and so mattsun gets quite territorial over them, and picks a fight with oikawa, even though he’s head alpha.
Summary:  When your omega demands to see your alpha, you can’t help but oblige, but unfortunately, someone else see’s you before he does.
Author’s Note: So I unfortunately am not comfortable enough to write for Mattsun, yet, as I don’t know enough about his character (Read: Haven’t read enough X Reader about Mattsun)  So I chose Iwaizumi!
Requests: Open!
Tumblr media
Hajime Iwaizumi
➵ ‘I want my alpha.’
➵ ‘I don’t care what you want-’
➵ ‘Give me my alpha!’ You omega snapped, a sharp twinge of pain vibrating down your temple in reaction.  You growled in response, rubbing the point of pain
➵ ‘Fine. Fine. You wanna act like a brat-’ Your omega snarled at you once more in warning, but you quickly shoved her to the side, shaking your head and making your way to the gym.
➵ You could already hear the squeaks of their shoes and the pounding of the playlist Oikawa inevitably put on (He totally has a practice playlist with every TikTok song on it and I don’t take criticism.).
➵ The pheromones' filtrated through the door before you even opened it, making you scrunch up your nose
➵ This wasn’t the first time you’ve been to the gym during practice, god no, but you don’t think it would matter how many times you came by- the smell would still put you off.
➵ Testosterone and sweat. Yum.
➵ Note the sarcasm.
➵ Sliding open the door, you poked your head in, beaming brightly as you watched your alpha serve.
➵ You didn’t like walking into the gym without Hajime seeing you, as most of Seijoh’s team was nothing but alphas (Except their coach, who was a Beta-- which was why Oikawa was Head alpha).
➵ They were big and tall alphas who had you shivering when you even thought of talking to them.
➵ It was nothing against them, oh no, most of them were absolute sweethearts, but a multitude of things-- including your own insecurities, and second gender--had you quivering near them.
➵ With time it would get better, but until then, they would need to be patient.
➵ And Patient they were. They left you snacks on your desk or gave them to your alpha to gift to you, they made sure Iwaizumi had time off for you and him, they were counting down the days until you were comfortable enough to official join the pack.
➵ Although, that meant Oikawa would have to scent you as well.
➵ It seemed there was tension between Hajime and him whenever it came to you.
➵ His naturally flirty personality clashed with yours more often than not, and often time Hajime was more than happy to come to your rescue.
➵ Perhaps that was one of the biggest hurdles in you officially joining the pack.
➵ Maybe if you three could get over that hurdle things would flow smoother.
➵ But until then, Hajime would get to hog you to himself for a while longer.
➵ No pack omega for now they supposed.
➵ But that didn’t mean Oikawa would immediately leave you alone.
➵ In fact, you could smell him approaching you, with his nice seashore smell, bright-- albeit fake-- smile painted on his lips.
➵ You nodded a greeting to him, which he returned.
➵ “You don’t have to stay out there, ya know. You can come in, we don’t bite, honey buns.” He chuckled, watching you slowly slink in further.
➵ You expected him to call over to your alpha right away, but he didn’t.
➵ “What do you see in Iwa-chan?” He purred, rounding around to stand behind you. His eyes seemed to watch your every moment as you swallowed tightly.
➵ “I-I’m not sure what you mean-”
➵ “Well, nothing against Iwa-chan, but he’s a little too...rough for someone like you, yeah? You’re such a shy little thing and he’s brash and loud-”  He continues to walk around you, like a predator watching his prey.
➵ Ka-thunk!
➵ Oikawa’s head whipped forward as a volleyball ricocheted in the opposite direction.
➵ You could practically feel the red-hot anger vibrating off of you alpha as he approached his head alpha.
➵ It took few steps for him to do so, standing between the two of you with you behind him.
➵ What a good alpha!
➵ Though Hajime was a commanding alpha he had no qualms against fighting his head alpha.
➵ Especially if he had a reason as great as you.
➵ Both were now growling, fangs dropped, hackles raised and smells swarming through the gym
➵ “Stay the fuck away from her, Oikawa. She’s not in the pack. Leave her alone.” Hajime snarled, stepping towards Oikawa.
➵ “What’s wrong, Iwa-chan? Scared your omega will realize there are more, better options?” Oikawa sneered, squaring his shoulders.
➵ Iwaizumi lunged before you could stop it, a solid upper-cut being delivered to his jaw, which was bruising right away. One was returned right away, cracking your alphas nose.
➵ Matsukawa and Kindaichi were quick to intervene after that, pulling them away and seperating them. Kindaichi allowed Iwaizumi to wrap you in a hug, calming himself down before he dipped into Alpha rage territory.
➵ You allowed him too, scenting him thoroughly before looking behind you. Oikawa was holding an ice pack to his cheek. He looked upset, angry, tired.
➵ You didn’t blame him.
➵ Giving a peck to your alpha’s cheek, you slowly made your way to Oikawa, well aware of every set of eyes on you.
➵ Hajime wordlessly asked you if you were certain with a hand on your wrist, which reluctantly let go when you nodded.
➵ When you closed in on the alpha, Oikawa looked up to you with sharp eyes, watching you sit down. Neither of you moved until you arched your neck, allowing your scent gland to be easily accessible.
➵ He paused, giving a glance behind you to your alpha, who supposedly nodded before moving closer to you, He shivered lowly, before moving closer to you.
➵ Scenting you was slow and gentle, but still quick enough to get you back into your alpha’s arms in no time.
➵ He purred, nuzzling into your cheek with a small peck.
➵ And though it was grumbled and muffled, both alphas apologized to each other.
➵ It only took five minutes for things to go back to light-hearted fun and playful jabs within the pack..
➵ Now with their first pack omega.
➵ And Hajime with his omega by his side for as long as he had left on this earth.
➵ And he was more than okay with that.
➵ Please kiss his nose, it hurts and he kinda wants to cry-

A/N: I apologise if this is a mess—I’ve just written this on my phone while camping in the middle of nowhere 😅 truly inspired by the outdoors hahah. Yes I’m sitting incredibly still in a spot that I found had cell service so I can upload this because I’m Impatient™️.
Pairing: Francisco ‘Catfish’ Morales x f!reader
Word count: 2.5k
Warnings: depressive thoughts, insecurities, A SICKENING AMOUNT OF FLUFF
+++
The truck’s packed. That’s the first thing you notice when you pull into the driveway, eyeing the bags chucked neatly in the bed of the vehicle. The brief sharp stab of panic that impales your heart is drowned by a sickening twist of understanding. Of course he’d leave — why would he want you? Why would he waste time being with you when he could do so much better? You don’t blame him. You wouldn’t get in his way of leaving.
The sigh that leaves you as you exit your car is long and drawn out, each step towards the house drains the low level of energy you had leftover after your shift and you wonder if you’ll be in Frankie’s way if you take up the couch to sleep. Will he want to take the couch? He had bought it, after all. The bed, then. He wouldn’t leave you without a bed — maybe he’ll come back for it tomorrow.
Frankie’s coming down the stairs when you walk through the door, a dark backpack slung over his shoulder and Mena giggling in his arms. God you’re gonna miss those little giggles. He smiles when he sees you, dropping the bag next to a bright pink unicorn one on the floor before striding over to you.
You’re stumped when he slings an arm around your waist and brings you in close, hips bumping together, and Mena immediately dives in to press a wet kiss against your cheek. He kisses the other, sharing a little smile with his little girl before looking at you.
“You’ve got 10 minutes to pack some clothes.” He says, and you blink, stomach rolling.
Oh. Maybe he was packing your stuff.
Of course, it’s his house.
It’s in his truck because you couldn’t possibly fit everything in your car. He was helping you move out. He didn’t have to—you could have called a removal company or something. He shouldn’t have to go out of his way, especially with Mena.
You’re sullen as you answer, brushing past him with a quiet okay. The stairs are hard to climb, but eventually you reach your bedroom. You try not to look at the photos lining the walls—pictures of Mena, of her with Frankie or you, of all three of you, of you and Frankie snuggled together on various dates and trips, scribbles deemed masterpieces plastered proudly in expensive frames. Maybe you could ask for a few copies, or take the originals if he was just going to throw the ones of you away. Which he would, of course, why would he keep them?
He’s left a duffle on the bed for you—his old army one. He loves this one. He uses it for everything. You make a mental note to make sure to return it.
Tears choke your throat as you pack the bag, and it’s not until strong arms wind around your waist that they fall free. You won’t say no to a final hug. You try to memorise the tightness of his arms, the feel of his beard along your skin as he buries his face in your neck.
“You ready? Mena’s getting cranky,” you hear the chuckle in his voice and nod your head. He must feel the tension in your torso because immediately he’s turning you, frowning at the tears streaking your face. “What’s wrong, baby?” He’s gentle as he wipes them from your cheeks, the pinch between his brows deepening as your face crumbles in his hands.
“I don’t want to leave,” you admit, sniffling quietly, “but I will if that’s what you want. You and Mena deserve better.”
“What?”
“It’s okay—”
“No, it’s not.” Soon your face is pressed hard against his chest and he’s crushing you, hand tight on the back of your head as he holds you. “You’re not going anywhere, not without us, anyway. We’re going on a trip. All three of us—together.”
A trip? Your mind is a whirl as you try to catch up. He wasn’t leaving you? Or, more accurately, you weren’t moving out? Suddenly the packed bags, especially Mena’s unicorn one, and packed truck make a little more sense to your darkened mind, and you instantly relax in his arms.
He pulls back, dark eyes sad as he studies your face.
Frankie had watched you the last few days; watched your mood sour, watched the bags below your eyes deepen. You’d barely been sleeping — he could feel you toss and turn all night, could feel the shudder in your shoulders as you tried to keep your sobs quiet in fear of waking him. He’d seen the look of utter defeat wash your face when you accidentally spilt the milk trying to make a coffee yesterday, seen the immediate glaze of tears as he wiped the spill away. You were gone before he could even turn and comfort you, the door slamming as you all but ran to your car.
He knew what was happening—could recognise the signs a mile away after having to defeat his own monster lurking in the back of his mind telling him he wasn’t good enough, reminding him of all the awful things he’d done in his life, what he’d done to others. He’d gone straight to work, said he wouldn’t be able to do any shifts on the weekend, and had left at lunch to start packing.
“I love you.”
Your face falls, head shaking in automatic denial.
“I do,” his touch is gentle, brushing more tears away with his thumbs. “I know you’ve been struggling lately. I’m sorry for not saying anything—I should’ve made it clear when you came home. We’re going camping for the weekend, unless you don’t feel up to it which is fine. We can just order a pizza, cuddle up on the couch and watch movies if that sounds better.” He smiles warmly, reassuringly, and you know in your heart that he really truly doesn’t mind what you decide to do.
How you ever landed Francisco Morales, you’ll never know.
“No, I want to go.”
“Are you sure? Please don’t be scared to say no—”
“I want to go.”
For the first time for what feels like all week, you smile, and actually mean it.
His eyes flick across your face, searching for any signs of hesitation, and then he grins, your eyes automatically falling to admire the dimple creasing his cheek. You kiss it instinctively, relief washing through you as your mind and hearts calms. He stops you as you pull away, leaning in and letting his nose run along yours before pressing a soft kiss to your lips.
He helps you put some clothes together, and with the two of you, you’re packed within a few minutes. He holds your hand on the way down the stairs, but stops to collect all the bags while you grab the little girl pulling at your legs. She babbles to you excitedly as you follow Frankie out of the house, her little fingers habitually pulling and fiddling with the chain around your neck.
You try to fend off the overwhelming feelings of unworthiness while you listen to Frankie talk animatedly back to Mena as you buckle her into her car seat, her little voice loud and bubbly as she claps her hands and bounces in her seat. You try to smile, try to reassure yourself that Frankie loves you, that Mena loves you, but you struggle truly believing it. How could they?
Music’s soon blaring throughout the cab of the truck as the familiar houses of your neighbourhood fly past, the Spotify playlist Frankie spent a good hour finding and adding songs to filling the quiet. He sings along, grinning at Mena’s attempts to sing along in her own little language, and when he looks at you, eyes shining with adoration, your chest feels tight and constricted.
You really didn’t deserve these two.
It takes a couple of hours to get to Frankie’s favourite spot—somewhere familiar to you from the many times he had taken you there. The small clearing is the same as it always has been, the large logs still situated around a small burnt patch of ground where leftover charred logs sat from previous campers. Frankie’s quick to erect the tent and organise the bedding inside, and soon he’s joining you and Mena at the edge of the wide lake glowing under the fading sun.
She’s dancing in the sand, little bare feet kicking up the grains as she twirls and twists and giggles when she goes too far and her toes touch the cool water. You sink to the ground and hug your legs, content to watch her enjoy the last bit of sunlight before it sinks beneath the horizon with a longing to feel as wild and carefree as she does.
“Papa!”
Frankie answers her call with a loud playful growl, and soon she’s squealing as he chases her across the sandbank. He catches her, throws her over his shoulder and spins, laughing at her wild screams of delight as he tickles her sides. Your chest warms, and the smile tugging at your lips is automatic as Mena runs on unsteady legs back to you, curls bouncing in her pigtails as she escapes Frankie’s arms and bolts to you for safety.
“Mama!” She climbs into your arms and your face drops in shock, wide eyes blinking up at Frankie who’s stopped dead behind her. The grin that widens his face practically blinds you, his eyes immediately shining with a sheen of tears as he drops beside you and smothers you both with a hug, pressing loud kisses to wherever he could reach. Mena giggles, pulling away to look between the pair of you with sparkling dark eyes. Little arms wind around both you and Frankie as she cuddles you close, her little head falling tiredly against your chest.
You catch Frankie looking at you, and return his fond gaze, smiling shyly under his admiration. The three of you snuggle together as the sun disappears, throwing bright hues of pink and orange across the cloudy sky, and finally, the tight feeling in your chest lessens under the pressure of two pairs of loving arms. Finally—you feel like you can breathe.
Frankie pipes up soon after the sun sets, “Who’s hungry?”
Mena’s head pops up instantly, the sleepiness that was just weighing her body down seemingly vanishing at the mention of food. She wiggles off your lap, and runs back to the campsite leaving you and Frankie chuckling quietly to yourselves as you follow. He and Mena sit together while he builds a fire, and you hear him talk through the process, Mena watching with curious eyes as he stacks the wood and lights it.
You all stay huddled together as the chill of the night drops over the camp site, sharing quiet laughs and keeping Mena entertained until her eyes start to drop. You stay mostly quiet, happy to just witness the two loves of your life share in each other’s affections.
Soon you and Frankie are left alone once Mena succumbs to sleep, and he brings two cups out with his phone playing quiet music, wiggling the bottle of whiskey he had hidden in his bag mischievously after putting her down in the tent. He pours a generous amount into both before sinking onto the log beside you, watching the flames dance in the dark before nudging you softly.
“Talk to me, baby.”
Sighing, your finger traces the rim of the cup and you shrug helplessly. “I don’t know. I just... I haven’t been feeling like myself lately.”
He nods, “Has something happened?”
You purse your lips, thinking over the last few weeks. Nothing jumps out and you shrug again, frowning at the flames. “No. My head just... I don’t know. I’m happy with my life—I love you, more than anything, and Mena, too... my job is fine—everything’s fine, but... my head just...” you struggle to finish your sentence, frown deepening.
You’re not making any sense. You never make sense. How can you possibly turn the jumble of thoughts in your head into words and make him understand? You barely understood it all yourself. What did you have to be upset over? Your life was picture perfect. Perfect man, perfect daughter, perfect job, a home full of love... so many people had it worse. You shouldn’t feel the way you do.
You must’ve spoken aloud because the next minute Frankie is reaching for your hand, rubbing the skin soothingly.
“I get it.” He says quietly, shooting you a comforting smile when you blink up at him, tears filling your eyes. “Our minds can be cruel sometimes, but just because there are others out there who may have it worse doesn’t take away from how you feel. You matter, just as much as others.”
You don’t try to stop the tears that fall from your eyes, instead letting them fall down your cheeks in a heavy flow. He moves closer in response, moving the arm holding your hand around your shoulder and pulling you in close to his side. The warmth from his body seeps into yours and you take a shaky breath as the tears continue.
“Is there anything I can do? Do you want to talk to someone? I know of a few good doctors around.”
Shaking your head, you lean your head on his shoulder and sigh deeply. “No, I think I’m alright for now, but if it gets worse...”
His arm tightens in response, and he nods quietly.
“I’m here for you, honey.” He murmurs, turning to kiss your forehead gently. “You don’t have to hide from me.”
You smile through your tears, turning to gaze up at him gratefully. “Thank you, Frankie.”
Quiet conversation starts up once the flow of tears dies off, and soon he has you in fits of laughter, the whiskey loosening the last bits of tension from your frame as it warms your insides. When Frankie’s favourite song comes on, he’s up before you can even make a comment, holding a hand out to you with a wide grin once he throws back the last of his drink and tosses his cup aside without a care.
“What?” You ask, eyeing his open palm with a grin.
“Dance with me.”
How could you ever say no? You couldn’t. Not to him. Your grin turns shy as you take his hand, letting him pull you up and off the log and into his frame. He holds you close, arms winding securely around you as you sway softly. The stars catch your attention when you rest your head on his shoulder, and you feel a lump growing in the back of your throat when Frankie starts to softly sing in your ear. It’s not depressive thoughts that have you on the verge of tears this time. Instead, your heart is damn near bursting, the flood of love for this man so strong you have to stop yourself from squeezing him too tight.
Your eyes flick to watch a shooting star, but instead of making a wish, you tuck yourself impossibly closer to Frankie. You didn’t need a wish—you had everything you needed already.

“That's the last of them.” Sy smiled, setting the last box of his stuff down.
With Lily pregnant and them making their relationship official, Sy moved all of his stuff from his Austin apartment into the farmhouse with Lily.
“Well, officially.” Lily replied, resting her hands on her hips and looking up at him. “Welcome home.” She smiled, giddy and proud.
“Thanks, Darling.” He grinned back, cupping her face and kissed her.
Tumblr media
Lily smiled, as she woke up from her nap, feeling the warm and heavy weight of Sy's body in bed with her, his head in its customary place, on her chest. She usually woke up from her naps with Sy, whether or not he was with her, when she fell asleep or not. Sighing and moaning softly, she lifted her hand to twist the short, curling ends of his hair between her fingertips.
“Hm.” Sy hummed softly, rubbing his scruffy face against her chest and hugging his arms tighter around her middle, thumb stroking her tummy.
“I'm surprised at you.” Lily whispered, still playing with his hair.
“Why?” Sy moaned back, turning his head to look up at her.
“When I first met you, I half wondered what your hair would look like if you let it grow out.” She explained, running her fingers through it.
“Oh?” He chuckled, smirking at her.
“Yeah.” She blushed at him. “But, I just didn't expect the Bear, Austin Syverson, would have curls.” She grinned at him, twisting the ends of his hair between her fingers, she loved his developing curls.
“My hair hasn't been this long in ten years.” Sy laughed, blushing and biting his lip. “I've been thinking about cutting it again.”
“I will end you, Wyatt.” Lily threatened, touching the tip of her finger to his nose.
“Oh, busting out the middle name and everything.” He smirked, taking a playful snap at the tip of her finger. “Lily?” He whispered, biting the inside of his lip as he stared into her eyes.
“What?” She replied, tilting her head at him.
“Have you thought about going back?” Sy murmured, brow creasing. “Back to Middleburg, to see your grandparents. Jak isn't a threat anymore. I'm sure they would love to see you and I'd bet my life, you want to see them again. Especially now, with the baby on the way.”
Lily pressed her lips together, resting her hands on Sy's shoulders. “It would be nice to see them again.” She answered, after a long pause.
“But?” He pressed, sensing it coming next.
“What if they don't want to see me?” She asked, searching his eyes for comfort, and found it. “What if they don't want me in their life anymore?”
Sy took a deep breath, sitting up as he did, and brought Lily up with him. “Then, that's their loss.” He told her, folding her up in his arms and pressing his lips to her forehead. “If they don't want you in their life, then they are missing out on knowing one of the most amazing gals, who can light up a room, simply by walking into it.”
“You're just buttering me up, Austin.” Lily mumbled into his neck.
“Woman, have I ever lied to you?” Sy grinned into her hair.
“No.” She chuckled, blushing shyly.
“I don't intend to now, Angel.” He whispered, kissing her temple. “But, you won't know their reaction, unless you go and see them.” He added, softer.
“I know.” She whispered back, leaning against his chest. “You're right. I owe it to them and myself.”
“Whatever choice you make, I'll support you, every step of the way.” Sy told her, gently tipping her head back and tenderly kissed her.

“I think I want to go see them.” Lily said, later that night, while she and Sy sat at the dinner table.
Sy looked up from his plate of spaghetti and garlic bread, slowly lowering his fork. “All right.” He nodded, straightening his back and giving her his full attention. “When do you wanna go?”
“The sooner, the better, I think.” She mumbled, shifting in her seat, her own dinner mostly untouched.
Sy nodded his head again, quietly regarding Lily from across the table. He could see the worried and fearful anxiety on her face, still mulling over every worst case scenario about seeing her grandparents again, he could almost see every one of them tick by her eyes. Afraid that her grandparents would disown her, the moment they laid eyes on her. Blaming her for what transpired with Jak. Afraid of what their reaction would be, when she showed up at their door, after five years of silence, pregnant with the baby of man they had never heard of or met before, especially since they were incredibly religious.
He reached across the table, just in time to catch the tear that escaped and started to slip down her cheek, then rested his hand over hers. “No matter what happens, Lily. You still have me.” He told her, lovingly.
“You still have us.”
Lily grasped Sy's hand and tried to smile at him and not cry at the same time, which was hard with the way her hormones were starting to really get out of control. “I know.” She choked back.
“Let me finish painting the rest of the house and go to your twelve week baby appointment on Friday, then we'll pack a bag and ourselves into the car and drive out there.” He told her, making a game plan, so her frazzled and tired mind could relax.
“It's only a twenty-ish hour drive.”
“I think, that's a good idea.” Lily nodded, chewing on her lip, taking deep breaths.
Sy smiled and squeezed her hand. “Good.” He chuckled and let her hand go, before picking his fork back up and dug into his spaghetti.

Sy double checked his large, Army issued duffel bag, making sure he and Lily had enough clothing, he had her zofran, nausea medicine, and prenatal vitamin, along with everything else he, Lily and Aika would need for the almost nineteen hour drive from Celina to Middleburg, Virginia, having already put her pregnancy pillow in the car, before tugging the bag closed, slung it over his shoulder and went downstairs.
“Billie promised to keep an eye on the place and pick up the mail for us.” Lily said, meeting him in the entryway hall.
“Great.” He smiled. “Well, I got all our stuff packed.” He said, jostling the duffel bag.
“I already packed some snacks in the truck too.”
“Then, we're all set!”
“No, I have to pee, one more time.” Lily giggled, and rushed into the half bath.
Sy laughed, shaking his head and took the duffel bag out to the truck, dropping it in the back seat with Aika. “All set?” He asked as Lily came out of the house.
“I am now!” She nodded, crossing the yard to the truck and got into the passenger seat.
“Did you lock up?” He asked, getting in with her.
“Yep.”
“You good, Aika?” Sy asked, looking to the German Shepherd, who let out a loud bark. “All right, let's get this road trip underway!” He pulled up Google Maps on his phone and entered the address to Lily's grandparents' place, then set the device on its dock and started the truck.

Sy and Lily laughed, as they sang along to a song that came on Sy's playlist that they both liked, Enemies by Shinedown. But, Sy turned the song down, when Lily suddenly stopped singing and quickly identified the look she got just before she threw up. Quickly popping open the center console, Sy reached inside of it and pulled out a circular, blue and white object and opened it, holding it out to her. Lily took it from him, without question and threw up in it, once or twice.
“Where did you get this?” She asked, looking at it, realizing it was a hospital-grade nausea bag. “Did you rob a hospital?” She chuckled, looking over at him.
“No.” He laughed back at her. “I bought them off Amazon. I wasn't sure if you got car sick on long rides or not. But, I was sure the baby would make you nauseous, at least, once on the drive. So, I wanted to be prepared and make you as comfortable as possible in the process.”
Lily tied the used bag closed, then opened the center console and found another twenty-plus of the blue emesis bags inside. She smiled up at him, shaking her head in disbelief of his utter and complete thoughtful and preparedness.
“You never cease to amaze me, Austin.” She said, sitting back up. “You see how amazing your Daddy is.” Lily grinned, looking at her belly, and making Sy blush.
“Well, I gotta take care of ya, don't I?” He smirked, resting his hand on her thigh.
“Yeah, I suppose.” She sighed, smirking back at him.
“There's some Listerine strips in the center console, by the way.” Sy added, after a few quiet moments.
“I'm sorry, am I offending you?” Lily giggled, opening the console again and fished around for them, before finding the small blue case.
“No, no.” He grinned, chuckling. “Just figured you'd want to get the taste out of your mouth.” He explained, finally getting them on the interstate highway.
“Did you pack my nausea meds?” Lily asked, feeling another wave wash over her.
“Yeah. It's in our bag.” Sy nodded, brow creasing, as he tried to figure out what stupid shenanigans the car in front of them was up too.
Lily twisted in her seat and pulled the worn green bag between the front seats, tugging it open and riffled through it, until she found the little prescription bottle of tiny, white oval tablets, then turned back around. She removed one of the pills and cracked open one of the two bottles of Voss water in the cup holders and downed the pill.
“Why don't you rest?” Sy suggested, reaching behind her seat for her pregnancy pillow. “It's just going to be annoying highway stuff for a while.” He said, giving her the pillow.
“I don't want you to get lonely.” Lily protested, maneuvering and situating the U-shaped pillow into a comfortable position.
Sy smiled over at her. “I'll be fine, Angel.” He assured her. “If I get lonely, I'll talk to Aika and we'll play the quiet game.” He chuckled, looking at the dog from the rear view mirror. “I'll wake you up around one, and we'll find some little place to have lunch.”
“If you're sure.” Lily yawned, she was usually already in the middle of a nap by now.
“Positive, Sweetness.” He nodded, turning the heat on a bit to make sure she was kept warm.
Lily contorted her body in her seat, drawing up her legs and propping her head and the curve of her pillow against the window, wrapping her arms around it and hugging it against her body, before dozing off to sleep. Sy reached out and rested his hand on her leg, gently massaging it as he kept his eyes on the road, just listening to the hum of the tires on the worn asphalt of Interstate Forty fill the silent cabin of the truck; Aika curled up on the backseat. The quiet boredom of the road allowed the devil to whisper into Sy's ear.
He wasn't sure what to do, if Lily's grandparents, the people that raised her, rejected her, and not only her, but their great grand-baby, his child. He knew he had to be strong for Lily, it would crush her, if they wanted nothing to do with her and the baby, but Sy wasn't so sure he would be able to keep himself under control. He had a feeling he would end up giving the couple a very big piece of his mind, before bringing Lily back home to Celina.
“It'll be fine.” He said aloud, glancing over at Lily. “It'll be all right.” He assured her sleeping form, leaning over just enough to lay his hand on her belly.

Sy found a turn off into Memphis just before one in the afternoon, parking at a small riverfront park in downtown Memphis, giving Lily a quiet place to wake up and all three of them a place to stretch their legs, and Aika a place to pee.
“Hey.” Sy called, softly, shutting off the car and leaning across the console. “Lily. Wake up, baby.” He cooed at her, brushing his knuckles against her cheek and tucking her hair behind her ear, kissing the corner of her mouth. “Hey, sweet pea.” He grinned, watching her eyes slowly flutter open, blinking at the bright sunlight glittering off the murky river water.
“Where are we?” She asked in a sleepy voice, rubbing her cheek against the microfiber cover of her pillow.
“The home of the King, Memphis Tennessee.” Sy chuckled, teasingly, and kissed her again. “So, love me tender.”
“I'm all shook up.” Lily chuckled, unfolding herself and sitting up in her seat.
“Well, it's now or never, baby doll.” Sy roared, his head going back.
“Oh, don't be cruel.”
“But, I can't help fallin' in love.” He chimed back.
“What now, my love?” Lily asked, smirking at him.
“I knew there was a reason I loved you.” Sy commented, finding more and more of them every day. “But, I thought we'd get some fresh air and stretch our legs, I'm sure Aika has to pee. Then, we'll find some lunch.”
“I like that idea.” Lily nodded, pushing her pillow into the back seat, then climbed out of the truck, taking the used nausea bag with her to throw away, while Sy put Aika on her leash.
Sy took Lily by the hand and strolled down the little sidewalk along the riverside, watching the various types of boats go by them on the water. The weather was nice and warm with pleasant enough humidity, a few clouds floating in the baby blue sky.
“Are you craving anything specific?” Sy asked as they patiently waited for Aika to do her business in the grass beside them.
“Hmm.” Lily hummed, pressing her lips together and considering if there was something specific she wanted for lunch; she hadn't had any definitive cravings yet, other than the three days she really needed to eat Mac and Cheese.
But, something specific did strike Lily.
“A pretzel.” She purred, already licking her lips at the thought of the salty baked good.
Sy chuckled at her, amused at the expression on her face, eyes closed and dreamy. “All right. I'll get you a pretzel then.”
It was like a ding went off in Lily's soul. “I want a lot of Pretzels.” She said, eyes popping open and looked up Sy, almost manic and desperate.
“Okay.” He replied, brows raised and blinking at her. “I'll get you a pretzel for lunch, then some to munch on.”
“Yeah.” Lily nodded, staring down at their feet, eyes wide. “Pretzels are good.”
“That they are.” Sy agreed, snickering, unable to keep back his amusement.
Lily's eyes snapped up at him, watching him laugh at her, his eyes practically teasing and making fun of her. “Shut up.” She snapped, but started to laugh back at him. “I can't help it.”
“I know you can't.” He nodded, trying to stop, but it only made him laugh harder. “That's what makes it even better.”
“I hate you.” Lily giggled, playful punching him in the arm. “Now, I want my pretzel, Captain.”
“Yes, Major!” Sy replied, saluting her, then quickly cleaned up after Aika and took them back to the truck. “I just need to find a place to get you one.” He sighed, taking his phone off its dock and googled where to get a pretzel in Memphis, Tennessee.
“Okay, there's an Auntie Anne's not that far from us that does pretzels.” He said, saving the directions and setting them in that direction.
Leaving Aika in the car, Lily and Sy went into the shopping center the Auntie Anne's was in, navigating the crowd and line to the counter. Lily chewed on her lip for a moment, torn between getting a regular pretzel or the pretzel bites, before finally deciding on the bites with the nacho cheese dip. With her food, they navigated their way around again and Sy got himself something from the Wendy's the center had as well, before going back out to the truck to eat there; Lily stealing a couple of Sy's french fries and sharing a couple of her pretzel bites.
Once their lunch was finished and they tossed their empty containers away, Sy made a quick run into the Mega Wal-Mart across the street from the shopping center to buy a big bag of mini pretzels and a case of Voss water for Lily, knowing she was going to get very thirsting from devouring them.
“Thank you.” Lily said, when Sy gave her the bag as he got in the car, her eyes glued on the bag.
“Just don't turn into one.” He teased her, chuckling. “All right, let's get back on the road.”
“I don't want you driving all night, Austin.” Lily mumbled around a mouthful of pretzel.
“I know and I won't.” He replied, reaching a hand into the bag. “I'll go until sun down, then we'll find a place to sleep for the night.” He said, then crammed the four or five pretzels into his mouth.
“Good.” Lily smiled, passing back a pretzel to Aika, who quickly devoured it and came back for more.

Reaching Blacksburg, Virginia just after dark, Sy found a drive-thru to order them dinner and a motel for the night, parking out front of the motel's office. Sighing, he rested back in the driver's seat, scrubbing his palms over his tired face and lulled his head to the side to look over at Lily, who had fallen asleep again, twisted around her pillow and her half eaten bag of pretzels clutched to her chest. They were three hours away from her grandparents' orchard, three hours from finding out whether or not they would be in Lily and the baby's life.
“Watch her, girl.” Sy said to Aika, before slipping out of the truck, locking the doors for extra measure, and going inside the office to get a room.
Once he had the room, Sy got back into the truck and parked as close to the room as he could, before going around and opening Lily's door, careful not to let her slip out. Then, gently took the pretzel bag from her and set it aside, unbuckled her seat belt and tried to figure out for a moment how to untangle the mess of limbs and pregnancy pillow, but quickly gave up with an amused chuckle. He just picked up both her and the pillow to carry her into their room and laid her down on the bed, tugging the turned down blankets over her, then went out to get their bag, dinner and Aika.
“Hey, Angel.” Sy smiled, closing the room door with his foot as Lily sat up, rubbing at her face and pushing her hair out of her face. “I got us some food.” He said, holding up the bag.
“You hungry?”
Lily nodded, still sleepy. “Where are we now?” She asked, sitting cross legged on the bed, beside Sy as they ate their food.
“Blacksburg.” He replied, shoving fries in his mouth. “About three hours away from your grandparents' place.”
Lily bit her lip and nodded her head, staring at the half eaten, plain chicken sandwich in her hand, suddenly losing her appetite and set it down. “I'm gonna take a shower, I'm sore.” She mumbled, getting off the bed and headed into the tiny bathroom.
Turning on the light and closing the door, Lily let out a heavy breath and tugged her tank top off over her head, followed by her elephant patterned leggings and underwear, before turning towards the shower, the walls were dingy and discolored, but clean. Spinning the hot and cold taps, then stepping under the shoddy shower-head, she leaned her forehead against the cracked acrylic wall, letting the pleasantly warm water cascade down her back, like a waterfall, with a soft moan. She was starting to have second thoughts about going to see her grandparents. She wondered how upset or disappointed Sy would be, if she told him she wanted to go back home to Celina in the morning, instead of going the three hours to Middleburg to see them.
She wondered how disappointed in herself she would be later on, if she chickened out this close to their destination.
The bathroom door opened and closed, followed by the rustle of clothing, before Sy stepped into the shower behind Lily, resting one hand on her hip and brought the other one around to cup the gentle slope of Lily's belly, pressing his lips to the base of her neck. Gulping down a thicket of emotions in her throat, Lily turned in Sy's arms and pressed herself against his chest, nuzzling her face into his neck. He smiled against her wet hair, gently kneading her hips and lower back, knowing after so many hours in the car and the way she contorted her body to sleep, she must have been in pain.
“Let me take care of you.” He whispered, kissing her forehead.
Sy picked up the little bottle of travel sized, hotel shampoo, broke the seal on it and poured it into his broad palm, then gently massaged it into her hair, stealthily wiping away a line of soap that dripped down her forehead and almost in her eye. Lily closed her eyes, softly moaning at the gentle and pleasurable pressure of Sy's strong and blunt fingers working the scentless shampoo into her scalp, his thumbs moving out to methodically rub her temples, easing the edge off of the tension migraine she had all day. Sy tipped her head back into the spray of the shower, combing his fingers through her wet and soapy strands to rinse out the shampoo. With her hair washed, he found a small wash cloth and bar of soap, and started to wash her body, beginning with her shoulders and applying a little bit of pressure as he did to massage the cramped muscles there.
“God, that feels so good.” Lily sighed, melting under his tender affection, a smile twitching on her face as he rubbed the cloth over the ticklish spots of her sides.
Sy smiled, kissing the bridge of her nose. “Anything for you, Angel.” He cooed back, paying special attention to the beautifully growing bulge of her belly.
“Thank you.” She whispered, relaxed and sleepy, after they got out of the shower, letting Sy dry her off and secure the towel around her body.
“You're welcome, Sweetheart.” He replied, kissing her cheek.
Lily went back into the room and opened their duffel bag, just pulling out the first article of clothing that her hand came in contact with, which was Sy's worn, Jack Daniels, Tennessee Whiskey t-shirt and let the towel slip off her and pulled on his shirt. Sy stood in the bathroom doorway, still naked and dripping from the shower and smiled at her, loving how the black garment hung on her like a dress, her shoulder length hair dripping and making it wet as she brushed it.
He had never seen anyone so beautiful in his life.
Moving over to the full sized bed, Sy situated her pregnancy pillow, then turned towards Lily. “Lay down, Angel.” He cooed at her.
Frowning at him for a moment, but seeing the look in his blue eyes, Lily chuckled and laid down, situating herself with her head and neck propped up on the belly of the pillow and her body comfortably cradled in the middle of it. Sy picked up her discarded towel and used it to dry off some, before turning off the room lights, then crawled into bed with her. Moving between Lily's legs and gently bending up her knees and pushing them apart, Lily's startled gasp filled the dark room as Sy's warm breath wafted over her exposed folds, just before his wide tongue took one long and leisurely lick.
“Jesus H. Christ!” She cried out, gripping the arms of her pillow.
“Just me, Angel.” Sy chuckled, hooking his arms around her legs, so they rested on his shoulders, and pressed his palms down on top of her thighs, to keep her still, before dipping his head back down and pressing an open kiss to her clit, flicking the tip of his tongue against it, melting Lily into a sweet and needy whimper.
Sy licked and suckled at her delicate pussy, slipping his tongue between her folds to tease her entrance and get a deeper taste of her, lewd noises filled the room as neither of them hid the pleasure they were in and having. Lily rocked against his mouth, her hands pressed to the back of Sy's head to hold him in place, eyes rolled and fluttered, her anxiety of not wanting to go to her grandparents' in the morning completely forgotten in the heady peak of her orgasm.
“I love your mouth.” Lily sighed, out of breath, exhausted and pleasantly numb.
Sy roared with laughter, laying down beside her. “Good to know.” He grinned, pulling the blankets over them and draping his arm over her. “Good night, Angel.” He whispered, kissing her cheek.
“Night, Bear.” She mumbled back, starting to drift off.
Sy stayed awake for a little while, his hand slipping up inside the shirt she was wearing to gently caress her belly and stared at the back of her head. “God,” He whispered, careful not to wake or disturb her. “I don't ask much of you. But, for whatever my word is worth, please don't let these people hurt my girl. She needs and wants them in her life, so does our little one.” He said, lifting his hand to gently stroke her damp hair.
“Let this meeting tomorrow go well, for all of us.” He sighed, squeezing his eyes shut and hugging Lily back against him.

Lily took a deep breath and held it, as Sy turned the truck off the main road and onto the dirt road leading onto the Warren Orchard farm, seeing the tall apple tree shaped sign with Warren Apples carved elegantly in its trunk. It wasn't long before they came to the closed security gate, shutting them off from the rest of the farm. Sy rolled the truck to a stop and looked over to Lily, lifting a brow at her, waiting for her to tell him what they should do next, when a voice came to life next to him.
“Welcome to Warren Apple Orchards, what can I do for you?” A deep Southern drawl asked from a mounted intercom box outside the driver's side window.
Sy rolled down his window and leaned closer to the box, spotting the security camera mounted above the one side of the gate. “Yeah, we're here looking for the owners of the place.” He replied, glancing over at Lily again.
“Mr. and Mrs. Warren aren't taking visitors just now.”
Lily huffed through her nose and leaned over the center console and Sy. “Tell them, Liliana wants to see them, Judd.” She called out, biting and pressing her lips together.
There was a long pause with a bubble of tension, before an electric buzz filled the humid air around them and the metal gate rolled out of their way. Lily sat back in her seat and Sy gave her a concerned look, before driving though.
“You know him?”
“He's worked here as long as I can remember.” Lily replied, staring out her window to the immaculate lawn and row of trees beyond that. “Just keep following the road, you'll find the house at the end of it.” She added, picking at the hem of the shorts she was wearing.
True enough, a few minutes later, a massive colonial, plantation house appeared behind ancient weeping willows. Made mostly of white stone with two stories of wrap around porches and ornate black railings, tall marble columns, from the foundation to the roof; what looked like five chimneys, three turrets and an apple tree weathervane. The driveway looped around the front of the house, leading up the stairs onto the porch was double french, front doors.
Sy was in complete awe of it as he pulled around to the front of the driveway. “This place is amazing.”
“Yeah.” Lily gulped, biting her lip and stared up at the house. “Oh dear god.” She whimpered, shrinking her seat, trying to hide.
“What?” Sy frowned, then noticed a whited haired man step out of the house, wearing a pair of light brown khaki pants and a black pull over sweater with the Warren Orchard's logo on it, an apple with an arrow threw it, the front of the arrow's shaft bent in the shape of a W.
“I'm guess, that's--”
“My grandfather.” Lily nodded, peeking over the edge of the door to look up at him. “Yep.” She sighed, squeezing her eyes shut and pressed her forehead to the window.
“Well, you can't hide forever, Angel.” Sy told her, tilting his head at her. “He knows we're here and this is more than likely us, sitting here.”
“I know.” Lily huffed, chewing her lip. “I know.”
“You can do this, babe.” He encouraged her. “I'm right here, Angel.”
Lily looked over at him, looking at him like a lost puppy, before taking a deep breath and fortifying herself. “You're right.” She nodded, leaning over and kissed him.
Taking another deep breath, Lily opened her door and stepped out of the truck, gulping as she looked up the steps to her grandfather. Her heart felt like a war drum in her chest, she was excited to see him again, he didn't seem any different from the last time he had seen him, at least, not from the distance they were at.
But, she was also afraid of what was about to happen next.
“Paw-Paw.” She called out to him, softly, her voice shaky.
“Liliana.” He replied, lifting a snowy brow at her, his honey-brown eyes scrutinizing her.
“I've missed you.” Lily blurted out, sniffling, tears burning her eyes. “I'm sorry I disappeared. I'm sorry I just ran away and I didn't tell either of you where I was going or why. That I stayed away for so long without a word.”
“But, I thought about you all the time.”
He stared hard at her, crossing his arms over his chest. “You scared the daylights out of your grandmother and I, Liliana. We tried looking for you everywhere, but you just vanished into thin air, like you never existed.” He told her, his anger slowly showing on his face.
“We thought you were dead.”
Lily bowed her head, ashamed for what she had put her grandparents through. “I'm sorry. It wasn't my intention, Paw-Paw.” She choked, looking back up at him, breathing hard.
“Then, what was your intention, Liliana?” He barked at her, his eyes glowing with rage. “Who are you?” He hissed, as Sy came around the front of the truck to wrap an arm around Lily's waist, to comfort her.
Sy looked up at him for a moment, his eyes hard at the man. “Austin Syverson.” He replied, hugging Lily against his side and rubbing her back.
“Your relation to my granddaughter is what?”
“I'm her boyfriend.” He replied, narrowing his eyes at the other man. “Look, she's come here, because she misses you both, very much, and has regretted the way she left. But, she had to leave, she had a very valid reason in doing so. In reality, she's an adult, more than capable of making her own choices and doesn't have to answer to anyone as to why she's made them.” He told Lily's grandfather.
“That includes you.”
“But, she's gained the strength to come here to try and make amends with you both, for more than one reason. You can either accept that or you can not. What happens now, is up to you.”
“Davy, who is it?”
A voice called from the double doors behind Lily's grandfather, before it opened to a thin, elderly woman with a short, curly pixie cut, who struggled to wheel herself out of the house and onto the porch. Her dim and pale blue eyes almost instantly found Lily at the bottom of the porch stairs, her hands flew to the front of her flower pattern dress, mouth dropping open.
“Liliana!” She exclaimed, reaching out a hand to her husband.
“Mee-maw.” Lily sniffled back, smiling at her grandmother through her tears.
“Thank the Lord, you're all right, my sweet child.” She cried, pressing a hand to her mouth.
“I am.” Lily nodded, wiping at her eyes. “And, I wanna be part of your lives again. I want to make amends for what I did by running away and disappearing. I'm sorry, I hurt you and Paw-Paw.”
Lily's grandmother looked up at her husband, who was still glaring at Lily and Sy, pressed her lips together, then looked back at them. “Come inside.” She said, letting his hand go and turned her wheelchair around and headed back towards the door.
“Davy.” She called over her shoulder.
Sighing, he turned and pulled the door open for her, eyeing Lily and Sy as they mounted the porch stairs, then followed his wife inside the house, before doing the same. She rolled down the hallway and turned into the private study, motioning to the long leather couch and parked herself in front of it.
“Hello.” She said, looking at Sy as he sat down beside Lily on the couch.
“Ma'am.” He replied, politely nodding his head to her.
“Who might you be?”
“Austin Syverson, Ma'am.” Sy answered with a sweet smile. “I'm your granddaughter's boyfriend.”
“Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Syverson.” She replied, regarding him. “I'm Violet Warren, and this is my husband, Davis.” She said, motioning to him as he took a seat in a chair to Lily and Sy's left.
“Sir.” Sy said, nodding his head stiffly to him.
“You're looking well, Liliana.” Violet commented, turning her attention to her granddaughter.
“Thank you.” Lily whispered, licking her lips. “I just go by Lily now.”
Violet nodded her head. “Very well.” She acknowledged. “Where've you been, Lily?”
Lily drew a deep breath through her nose and slowly let it back out. “It's a long story.” She whimpered, gripping Sy's hand for support, chewing the inside of her cheek to bits.
Davis and Violet glanced at each other, before she leaned forward and took a small hand bell off the coffee table between them and rang it. A moment later, a young lady appeared in the doorway of the room and Violet asked her to serve them some tea. The tension was tight and thick in the room while the tea was being made for them, no one saying a word to each other. The servant returned, carrying in a highly polished tea tray and set it down on the coffee table, setting out teacups for the four of them and filled the cups, before leaving the room again.
“What is your story, Lily?”
Carefully drizzling a bit of honey into her tea with a honey dipper and taking a fortifying sip of it, Lily started her story. “You know that I had been seeing Jak.” She said, looking between her grandparents.
“We did.” Violet nodded, taking a sip of her own tea.
“Well, what you didn't know was Jak had been abusive to me.” She continued, staring into the rich and steamy liquid in the expensive china teacup. “He had been the entire time we were together. But, I was too naive and silly to break it off with him for the longest time. But, after a particularly bad incident, I decided I couldn't take it any longer. So, I packed a bag and went to live with Maggie. I didn't tell you-” She paused, brow creased, she had often thought about why she hadn't told them, but had never really pinned down a specific reason to why she hadn't.
But, she shook that thought off.
“I honestly don't know why I hadn't. All I knew was I was terrified of Jak finding me again and dragging me back into the life and situation I had been living in for so long with him. While I was with Maggie, I changed my name from Liliana Jade Warren to Lily Ana Moore, to make it harder for him to find me, which made it hard for the both of you to find me, and finished university.” She continued on. “After I did that, I moved to a very small town in Texas and started my own company for my Graphic Design and Photography.”
“It's how I've been supporting myself.”
“I was so consumed by my paranoia and fear of Jak finding me, that I never left the house I bought in Texas, five years ago, this is the farthest I've been from it, since I've moved there.” She confessed, looking to Sy, who smiled at her, supportive and proud.
“What's changed?” Her grandfather asked, his own teacup still where the servant set it, ignored and cold. “Why are you here now?”
Lily cleared her throat and set her tea aside. “I left and became reclusive, agoraphobic, because I felt unsafe and afraid. That Jak would end up finding me and hurting me. He did end up finding me, but Austin...” She looked to Sy, her eyes filled with appreciative love and pride. “Austin makes me feel safe again. He's protected me, in more than one way, and he's shown me what real love is. I owe him so much.”
Sy grinned brightly at her, gripping her hand, a bit choked up at her words.
“He's helped me get back to this place, a place I've held onto, wanting to be a productive member of society, to be back in your life and be your granddaughter again. I miss you and I love you both. That never changed and it will never change.”
“That never changed for us either, Lily.” Violet replied, resting her teacup back on its saucer. “You will always be our precious granddaughter and we have always loved you; from the moment you were born to this moment right now.”
“I hope you could find it in your heart, to have a little more love.” Lily whispered, biting the inside of her lip, gulping.
“For what?” Violet frowned, brows drawing together and head tilting at her.
Lily looked to Sy, who nodded his head at her. “Sy and I are expecting.” She mumbled, not meeting either of her grandparents' eyes.
“You're with child?” Violet asked, shocked disbelief in her voice.
“I am.” Lily nodded, whimpering.
“I hope you're not here, thinking this little reunion will get you money.” Her grandfather snapped, coldly.
Lily's eyes snapped over to him, a cold knot of shock, hurt and anger in her stomach, she could feel the tension stiffen Sy's body. “We don't need any of the family money.” She hissed, eyes hardening. “My business alone is quite well off, thank you; and I'm more than offended at the accusation.”
“That's putting it politely.” Sy chimed in, staring daggers into the old man.
“Davis.” Violet barked, offended at her husband's insult as well, she had no feeling that Lily and Sy were there looking for money or assistance with their lives or the baby.
“Excuse me, for the last time I recalled a couple sitting on that very same couch to tell us they were expecting a child, it was our sweet Daisy and that good for nothing, Palmer, and we all saw how that ended.” Davis replied, his voice cold and sharp.
“Austin isn't my father.” Lily barked, her voice mirroring her grandfather's.
Lily and her grandfather glared darkly at each other, before Violet grew annoyed with their childish behavior and clapped her bony hands together, catching the room's attention.
“That is quite enough.” She scolded them.
Sy hid his smirk around the rim of his teacup, already liking Lily's grandmother.
“How far along are you?” Violet asked, looking at Lily.
“Almost thirteen weeks.” She replied, unconsciously touching her belly.
“Do you know what you're having?”
“Not yet.” Lily grinned at Sy, giddy at the thought of finding out the gender of the baby, she didn't care if it was a boy or a girl, she was just excited in general. “We won't know for another five weeks.” She added, glancing over at her grandmother.
“Well,” Violet grinned, her eyes lighting up. “I can't wait to meet my great-grandbaby.” She said, sounding overjoyed at the prospect. “Davy?” She looked to her husband, her eyes still filled with excitement, but outlined with warning.
Davis looked at her for a moment, then over at Lily, before looking down at the watch on his right wrist, then stood. “I have to meet Mac in the south orchard.” He said, tonelessly, and left the room.
Lily let out an uneven breath and painful tears punched her in the chest, turning her face into Sy's collarbone as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and hugged her against his side, pressing his lips to her hair. Violet's mouth was pressed into a thin, angry, lipstick red line as she continued to stare out the study doorway after Davis, the rapturous event of finding out about their great-grandbaby being overshadowed by his stubborn pigheadedness.
“I think we should go.” Sy said to Lily, gently wiping away her tears.
“Please, do stay.” Violet chimed in, turning her attention back to them. “There's more than enough room right here.” She said, looking back and forth between Lily and Sy. “Please, it's been so long, Lily. You've been gone and so far away. Town is twenty minutes away and with you here now, two minutes is too far away.”
Lily looked up at Sy.
“It's up to you, Angel.” He whispered, brushing his thumb against her flushed cheek.
She looked over at her grandmother. “Of course, I would love that.” She whispered, wiping her nose on the back of her hand.
Violet smiled at her, relieved to have her granddaughter under the same roof again. “I'll have Clara set two extra places at the table.” She grinned, overjoyed. “I'll even have her make your favorites for lunch and dinner.”
Lily smiled at her, touched at her grandmother's sentiment. “Thank you.”
“You remember where your room is?” She replied, lifting a brow at her.
“I do.” Lily nodded her head.
“Then, I won't keep you any longer. I'm sure you must be tired with the baby and the long journey from Texas.”
“I am.” She agreed, sighing softly.
“Off you both go then, the bell will ring, when lunch is ready.”
“Thank you, Mee-Maw.” Lily said, nodding her head and stood up, Sy standing with her.
“Ma'am.” Sy nodded his head to Violet, then followed Lily out of the room and down the hall to a flight of stairs. “Well, that didn't go as badly as the two of us thought it would.” He commented, mounting the stairs behind her.
“No, it did not.” Lily replied over her shoulder, going up the three sets of stairs. “I just hope my grandfather comes around.” She added, coming to the second floor and going down to a door at the very end of the hall. “This is...was—my room.” She said, turning the vintage, metal and ceramic door knob that had a hand-painted gold floral design on it, and pushed the door open.
The bedroom was spacious and bright with the mid-morning sun shining in through four windows, between one set of windows sat a squat, five compartment, vintage chest of drawers, across from that was a full sized, poster bed, with the doorway to a bathroom to the left and a walk-in closet to the right. There was a bookcase and table against the wall by the door, mostly filled with church and home school related things.
“It's a nice room.” Sy commented, picking up one of the books on the table, a bible.
“Thanks.” Lily smiled, shyly, seeing that her grandparents had left her room the exact way she'd left it, when she moved out.
“Do you wanna rest for a little while?” He suggested, stepping up behind her and resting his hands on her hips, gently pressing his thumbs into the small of her back and massaging them.
“Yeah.” She moaned, her head dropping back against his chest, turning to kiss the underside of his bearded jaw.
“How about a nice warm bath first, maybe a cup of tea?”
Lily chuckled into his neck, grinning. “So dotting, Captain.” She teased him.
“I love you.” He cooed, kissing her forehead, then moved away from her and went into the bathroom, plugging the drain on the ancient claw-foot tub and turned the X-shaped tap handles.
Lily padded into the bathroom, sitting down on the closed toilet seat and pushed down the stress of her grandfather's behavior towards her, to watch Sy fill the bath for her, a soft smile on her face. She stood up for a moment and reached underneath the sink and removed a small bottle and handed it to him. Sy smiled at her and took it from her, uncapping it and getting the strong snap of eucalyptus and sprinkled the Epsom salt into the delicately warm water, before turning off the tap. He grabbed a towel and folded it, then situated it at one end of the tub, to pillow her head, when she started to soak.
“Now, where is the kitchen?” He asked, looking at her.
“Down the stairs, first door to your right.” Lily replied, getting out of her clothing.
“Cool, I'll be right back.” Sy told her, kissing her temple and stepped out of the room to go downstairs to get her tea.
Lily finished undressing and carefully stepped into the pleasantly warm water, leaning back with a soft and satisfied moan, focusing on the warm water enveloping her body easing away her aches and pains, melting away the anxieties that had accumulated during the drive over from Texas and the visit. While Sy found the kitchen and pushed open the swinging door, finding the cook, Clara, inside, who looked up as she heard him come in and wiped her hands on her apron.
“Can I help you?” She asked, lifting a brow at him.
“Um, just need a cup of tea.” He replied, licking his lips and glancing around the kitchen.
“Oh, of course, right away.”
“I'd hate to put you out.” Sy said, alarmed.
Clara chuckled at him, pulling down a cup from a high cabinet. “It's what the Warren's hired me for.” She assured him. “I'm guessing it's for Lily.” She added, moving about the kitchen as she put the things together to make the tea.
“Yeah.” He nodded, then patiently waited for her to finish and took the cup from her. “Thank you.”
“You're welcome.” Clara smiled, and returned to what she had been doing.
Sy carefully took the cup back upstairs to Lily, smiling as he stepped into the bathroom and saw her lounging comfortably in the tub. He was glad she could relax and let the stress go, even if it was for a little while. Lily stirred as he sat down beside her, smiling at him and taking the cup of tea from his outstretched hands and let out a pleased moan.
“Feels like a spa day.” She chuckled, handing her teacup back to Sy for him to hold, so she could relax back again.
“You deserve to relax.” Sy replied, softly. “You've got an important job to do.”
“Yeah, I'm growing a Syverson.” Lily chuckled, teasingly.
“Exactly.” He laughed back. “That's no easy feat to bring one of us into the world.”
“Bringing a Syverson into the world is just the start of it, then we have to raise them.”
“Oh, trouble, trouble, trouble.” Sy grinned at her. “Nothing, but trouble.”
“Toil and bubble.” Lily giggled, fully amused and lighthearted.
“Come on, sleepy, out with you.” Sy said, setting her empty teacup on the vanity counter and pulled the towel off the bar and held it open for her.
“Okay.” Lily replied, stifling a yawn with her hand.
Stepping out of the tub and into Sy's arms, she rested her forehead against his chest and let him dry her off. Sy had taken a liking to drying her off after she showered or bathed, since she'd become pregnant, none of which Lily protested to, she was usually very sleepy by the time she got out of them, so having him there to finish up was always nice.
“Oh, fuck.” He barked, after helping back into her clothing. “Your pillow is still in the truck.”
“It won't kill me to have one nap without it.” Lily said, through yet another yawn.
“You were a very cranky mama bear the last time you didn't have that thing to sleep with.” He reminded her. “I'll go down and get it, just sit tight.”
“I'd rather lay tight.” She huffed, starting to get cranky as she shuffled over to her bed and laid down.
Sy rushed back downstairs and nearly collided with Violet. “Oh my god, I am so sorry.” He panted, making sure she was all right. “ Are you okay?”
“I'm fine, where's the fire, Mr. Syverson?”
“Lily's laying down for her nap and I just realized she doesn't have her pregnancy pillow and she always wakes up very cranky, when she doesn't have it to sleep with.” He explained, calming down.
Violet smiled up at Sy, touched and pleased at the plain devotion he had for her granddaughter. “Well, we can't have that, now can we?” She chuckled, rolling back out of his way.
“No, ma'am.” Sy shook his head at her.
“Violet, Mr. Syverson. Just call me Violet.” She informed him as Sy reached the front door.
He paused, hand on the door and smiled at her, remembering when Lily told him to call her by her given name. “Of course, Ms. Violet.” He nodded at her, politely.
Violet smiled back at him and Sy went out to his truck.
“Hey, girl.” Sy said, opening the passenger door of the truck and only to get attacked by Aika's tongue. “I know, I know. I haven't forgotten about ya. I promise.” He chuckled, petting her. “I'll come back down in a couple minutes and take care of you. But first, I have to take care of your mama.” He said, reaching in the back seat for Lily's U-Shaped pillow, pushed Aika back and closed the door again, before rushing back upstairs.
“Okay, pillow.” Sy said, bursting into the room, only to find Lily curled into a ball and sound asleep, making him chuckling. He situated her pillow and gently unrolled Lily from her ball and slipped her between her pillow, before covering her up.
“Sleep sweet, Angel.” He whispered, kissing her cheek softly, then went back downstairs. “Um, do you know where Ms. Violet is?” He asked the servant that had served him and Lily tea when they had first arrived.
“Yes, she's in the private study, right through there.” She replied, pointing the way.
“Thank you.” He nodded, then went down, gently knocking on the door.
“Enter.”
“Ms. Violet?”
“Ah, Mr. Syverson, I'm trusting the pillow crisis was averted?” She asked, an amused glitter in her eyes.
Sy chuckled. “It was, thank you.”
“Then, what can I help you with?”
“I, uh, brought Lily and I's dog with us...” He said, sheepishly, though Lily's grandmother seemed like a very sweet woman, Sy got the vibe she was the authority in this household and crossing her wasn't the way to go. “She's in my truck and I didn't want to take her out without asking first, so I didn't step on any toes and cause any issues with you and your husband.”
“What kind of dog is she?”
“She's a German Shepherd.” Sy replied, licking his lips. “I found her in the war-zone on my last deployment.” He half explained to her.
Violet blinked several times at Sy. “You were in the military?”
“Yes, ma'am.” He nodded, with a deep sense of pride. “I was a Captain in the U.S Army, Special Forces, for more than ten years.”
“What's the pup's name?”
“Aika.”
“Well, Aika is more than welcome here.” She told him. “As long as she behaves herself.” She added, a soft smile on her face.
“She's a very well behaved dog, you have my word.” Sy replied, smiling back at her.
“Good.” Violet nodded. “Just make sure you keep her out of the orchards or Davis will have a never-ending fit.”
“Will do.”
Excusing himself, Sy went back out to the truck and put Aika on her leash, walking her around the front of the property and away from the orchards, making sure to clean up after her, then brought her inside, taking her upstairs to Lily's room, where she curled up on the bed with Lily, before he decided to do a little exploring himself before lunch.
He wandered into the orchards, seeing the short trunks, but wide crowns, light green and shiny apples weighing down its branches and a couple littered the ground. There easily had to be a hundred trees of the same sort for as far as Sy could see in the area he was in, before he moved on. Sy came to a small dirt lane and crossed it into a totally different portion of the orchard, these trees were still squat and wide, but the apples on their branches were medium sized and mostly two toned, a dull red that faded into a yellow-y green color.
He crossed another dirt road and found another orchard of another kind of apple, this one a light yellow color, when he heard voices and then his name and turned, seeing Lily's grandfather, realizing he had wandered into the south orchard.
“What are you doing out here?” Davis asked, approaching him.
“Just looking around.” Sy replied, keeping his tone guarded. “Lily's told me a lot about the place.”
“And where is she?”
“Back at the house, sleeping.” Sy told him, his shoulders stiff. “She gets tired a lot with the baby.”
“Hm.” Davis huffed and turned on his heels.
“What's your problem?” Sy barked after him, unable to hold his temper any longer. “She just wants her grandfather, the man that raised her, back in her life, in her child's life. Not your money or your business, just your love and affection.”
Davis spun around on his heels to face Sy. “I might have raised her, because my Daisy died, and her father was an unreliable scum, but she's making the same mistake her mother did. I won't be part of that again.”
“I won't be there when it kills her too.” He hissed, then stormed off.

Lily woke up to Sy's angry pacing at the foot of the bed and cursing under his breath, and sat up, rubbing at her eyes. “What's wrong, Bear?” She asked, frowning at him.
“Your grandfather is a pigheaded, son of a bitch.”
Her mouth fell open for a moment, then her brows drew together and her eyes narrowed. “Did the two of you get into an argument?”
“Sorta.” He huffed back.
“For the love of Jesus, Austin.” Lily barked at him, pressing her hands to her face. “Why?”
“I didn't go lookin' for it, Lily.” He retorted, stopping his pacing. “I was just checking out the orchards and ran into him. One thing came to another, I asked him what his problem was, all you want is his love and affection back, not his damned money or his orchard, and his reply was you're making the same mistake your mother made and you'll end up dying because of it too.”
“Which you will fucking not!” He added, a panicked fright breaking through his burst of anger.
“Of course, I'm not going too, Bear.”
Lily sighed, shaking her head and running her hand through her hair, before getting up out of bed. “I'll be more than all right. We have a great doctor and an amazing hospital back home. Plus, I have you to take care of and look after me, the whole time. I'll be perfectly safe and sound.” She told him, hugging her arms around his waist and pressed her cheek to his chest.
“Don't listen to him, Sy. He's just a grumpy old man, set in his ways.”
“What's that make me?” He asked, half jokingly.
“My boyfriend and Papa Bear.” She giggled, tilting her head back to look up at him.
“Good to know, Mama Bear.” He teased back, dipping his head to kiss her. “The fuck was that?” He asked as two loud dinging sounds filled the house.
“That is the lunch bell.” Lily replied, pulling away from him. “One ding is breakfast, two is lunch and three is dinner.” She explained to him, finding her shoes and slipping them back on. “Old Virginian hospitality, Syverson. I know you Texans aren't used to it.”
“Oh, you posh and polished Southerners.” He teased back, following her downstairs. “Give me the ringing of a triangle any day and this cowboy will know the way to the dinner table.”
“Remind me to buy one for our house, then.” Lily giggled, showing him into the family dinning room.
“Buy what for your house?” Violet asked, already seated at one end of the table.
“Oh, Sy was making fun of us for being—what did you call it?” She asked, looking at him as he vigorously shook his head at her. “Ah yes, posh and polished Southerners, for having a meal bell.” You grinned at him, impishly. “While, pointing out the Texas Cowboy in him could only find his way home, if he heard the call of a triangle bell.”
“I said, I would be able to find my way to the table. I know my way home, thank you very much.” He spoke up, his cheeks pink underneath the hairs of his beard.
Both Lily and Violet's laughter filled the dining room, but Sy soon joined them. But, the laughter died down as Davis entered the room, taking his place at the other end of the table, practically sucking the air out of the room as he took his seat.
“How is the south orchard doing?” Violet asked, as lunch was being served.
“One of the original York apple trees is starting to fail for some reason.” Davis replied, picking up the salt shaker. “Mac and I were running through a list of things we can do to save it.” He explained, paying closer attention to his food than to the others at the table with him.
“This looks really good.” Sy commented, licking his lips at his plate.
“It's one of Lily's favorites.” Violet smiled at him. “Creamy Shrimp pasta.”
“I used to try and bribe Clara into making it for every meal once for a whole summer.” Lily chuckled, twirling the angel hair pasta around her fork. “Never worked out.”
“Didn't deter you from trying though.” Violet chuckled, smiling fondly at her granddaughter. “I'm more than sure you'll love what Clara is making you for dinner.”
“I have no doubt.” She smiled back.
“Oh, Mr. Syverson, if you'd like a place to park your truck, I'm sure Davis could show you where the garage is.” Violet said, her eyes on her husband.
“Thank you, Ms. Violet.” Sy replied, smiling at her. “And, please, call me Sy or Austin, whichever you might prefer.” He told her, a bit shyly.
“Austin, it is.” Violet answered, giving him a sweet smile. “But, you can do that for him, can't you?” She said, lifting a brow at her husband, with an expression that dared him to object to her request.
Davis stared at his wife, his hard brown eyes holding Violet's stern blues, before his shoulders dropped slightly. “I'll show you after lunch.”
“Thank you.” Sy replied, stiffly.
Lily rested her hand on Sy's thigh, gently squeezing it, trying to keep him calm and relaxed. “How have the orchards been?” Lily asked her grandfather, trying to open any sort of connection with him. “I know picking season is coming up soon in the next few months.” She pointed out, gathering up a forkful of her shrimp pasta.
There was a long silence at the table, each second made Lily's heart clench tighter, fearing her grandfather would just continue to ignore her and pretend she didn't exist. She didn't know how much more of his coldness she could take, before it became too much to bear and she would just want to leave again.
No matter how much it would hurt.
“Other than the York tree showing signs of white rot, the orchards are as productive and fruitful as ever.” He finally spoke.
“What happens if you don't cure the white rot?” Lily frowned, concerned for the tree.
“We lose the tree.” Davis sighed, resting back in his chair and tossing his napkin onto the table beside his plate. “It'll only be the third originally planted tree on the farm we've ever lost. Well, with any luck the rot won't spread and it won't hit us too hard.” He explained, looking at her.
“Just because you lost one, don't mean you'll lose more.” Lily replied, holding his gaze.
Davis dropped his eyes and nodded his head, sighing, then looked up at Sy, noticing his empty plate. “You done?”
“I am.” Sy nodded, wiping his mouth.
“Come on, and I'll show you where the garage is and you can park your truck.” He said, standing up, leaving his half eaten lunch on the table.
“I'll be right back.” Sy whispered to Lily, kissing her cheek and stood, following her grandfather out of the house.
The walk from the house was silent as they stepped off the paved driveway and onto a pea gravel lane that led a little ways away from the house, through a small grove of very ancient looking weeping willows to a large building with several vehicles parked outside of it.
“You can park it here.” Davis said, motioning to the area in front of them.
“Thanks.” Sy nodded to him, then turned back to get his truck.
Bringing his truck around and finding a place to park it, Sy got out and and grabbed their duffel bag out of the back and locked up, heading back up to the house; when Davis stopped in his tracks, noticing the duffel bag slung over his shoulder; the worn military green and the faded, black U.S letters.
“Something the matter?” Sy frowned, turning back to him.
“That's a military bag.” Davis replied.
“Yes, it is.” He nodded, shifting it on his shoulder and tilting his head at the other man.
“It's yours?”
Sy's shoulders slumped and he stared at the old man. “I served more than ten years in the U.S Army as a Captain in the Special Forces.” He explained to him. “I retired almost a year ago.”
“How did you and Lily meet?”
“As I said, I retired almost a year ago and I returned home to Austin, Texas.” Sy replied, sighing. “Even though I could live quite well on my retirement, I don't like not having a job or being idle. So, I went about applying for jobs, mostly jobs I could do with my hands, construction jobs and such. A construction company told me about a contract that they had gotten from a young lady, who needed help fixing her place up in Celina, which is about three hours south of Austin. I called about it and got the job. I'm sure you guessed, it was Lily.” He smirked, chuckling to himself.
“I started fixing the place up for her and we grew close, especially after we helped each other through a few traumatic things.”
“Like, what?”
“I have pretty severe PTSD from my time in deployment and Lily's gotten me through more than one episode.” Sy smirked, blushing slightly and toeing the ground with the tip of his boot. “She's the guiding light to holding them back.” He whispered softly. “As for her, she's been through a lot in the last five years, especially the fear and turmoil caused by Jak.” He said. “There's nothing on this planet, there hasn't been anything on this planet, I wouldn't do to ensure her happiness and safety.”
Sy looked Davis dead in the eyes, a deep seriousness coming over him, even though he had a knot in his stomach. “Listen, your granddaughter isn't a little girl anymore. She's a grown woman, and a beautiful, loving and intelligent one, at that. She's so incredibly caring for the people around her, even when she's been so hurt and her trust in people has been cut deeply. Her work ethic is admirable, she built a company from the reclusion of her own home, that she hadn't left in more than three years, and it is thriving. She's even currently in the process of interviewing people to fill two positions, because she has so many clients, that she's in need of the extra help.”
“You're projecting the fear of your daughter’s mistakes and death on Lily and it isn't fair to her, or to you and your wife.”
“My Daisy Mae's misfortunes aren't the only failures that have me disappointed in the situation.” Davis said, rolling his jaw at Sy.
Sy huffed at him, biting his lip and nodding his head at him. “You think I'd be some, what was it, unreliable scum, like her father?” He asked, lifting a brow at him.
Davis sighed back at him, scrubbing a palm over his wrinkled forehead and lifted a brow at him. “Come with me.” He said, motioning him back towards the house.
Pressing his lips together, Sy followed him back up to the house and into Davis's private study, setting the duffel bag down by the door as Davis closed it behind him. Davis motioned to a leather and mahogany upholstered chair in front of a cold fireplace, then moved over to a small table of bottles and glasses, pouring them both a drink. He handed Sy a glass and took the seat across from him, taking a long sip.
“Smooth stuff.” Sy commented, licking his lips and admiring the rich, amber liquid.
“Maker's Mark, Kentucky bourbon whiskey.” Davis replied, smirking at his glass, appreciatively.
“Anyhow.” He cleared his throat, balancing his glass on the arm of his chair. “Palmer Hughes. He came to work here in the summer of 1985, he was twenty years old and Daisy was eighteen. I knew the boy was trouble the moment I set eyes on him and knew I should have sent him picking.”
“But, for whatever reason, and against my better judgment, I didn't.”
“He took an instant liking to our Daisy, who was ordinarily a good mannered, well behaved and proper girl. But, as soon as he set his eyes on her, he started corrupting her. He would stop coming to work in the fields to sneak himself and her off the property and go into town or wherever it was they would go to. Daisy started to become more defiant and rebellious. One of our church elders even spotted her and Palmer with a group of their lowlife friends in a questionable area of town, getting high, smoking and drinking.”
“It was such an embarrassment.” He sighed, taking a deep gulp of his drink. “When Daisy was twenty-one, she came to her mother and I and told us she was pregnant. Palmer had split the moment he found out about it. But, I tracked his no good ass down and dragged him back. He and Daisy got married just before Lily was born.”
“What happened?” Sy asked, frowning at him, the burn of the alcohol melting through the knot in his stomach as he thought about it. “How did her mother die?”
“She developed a hemorrhage that the doctor's couldn't get under control, so she ended up bleeding to death.” Davis explained, growing pale at the memory of the doctor's telling him and his wife the news of their daughter’s death, their only child. “For his part, Palmer did seem distraught over her death. But, he blamed Lily for it. So, he spent the rest of her life coming in and out of it, before Violet and I finally just adopted her and permanently took care of her.”
“It was Violet and I that ended up naming Lily, as well. Daisy hadn't picked one, that we were aware of, and Palmer wasn't being cooperative with anyone, us or the hospital staff.”
“Where is her father now?”
Davis sighed and carefully regarded Sy for a long moment, before replying. “He died, some years ago.”
Sy blinked at him, shocked. “You never told Lily this.”
“No.” He shook his head, guilty. “Vi and I thought it would be best that we didn't.”
“That's not really for either of you to decide.” Sy frowned at him, annoyed. “Lily deserves the truth.”
“I know she does.” Davis agreed. “I'll tell her, one day. As for you, Austin.” He met Sy's eyes. “I've unjustly projected my prejudices of Palmer onto you. You are, not even an ounce, the man he was. You are a man I wish my own daughter would have met and fallen in love with. But, I am glad my granddaughter met, fallen in love with and is having my great-grandbaby with you.”
“Thank you.” Sy answered, taking his compliment and finished off his drink.

summary: what better way to congratulate your hard working boyfriends than to invite them over for wine and dinner.
warnings: drinking
Soft music played out of your speaker as you cleaned up your kitchen and living room. You’d already gotten everything set up and were just waiting for your boyfriends and the food delivery to arrive. You hummed to the song, wiping down your coffee table. The playlist had been made for you by an old friend, and you put it on whenever it felt right.
Your doorbell rang before you hurried over, grabbing the food from the delivery person, mumbling a quick thank you. You opened the bag of food, placing each item where each of your boyfriends and you sat. Once you took a final look at the table, set up with enough plates, chopsticks, spoons, napkins, wine glasses, and finally, the food. You reached for your phone in your pocket, checking the time and seeing if you’d missed any messages.
Mark: We’ll be there in a couple minutes.
You smiled to yourself before checking yourself out in a nearby mirror, making sure you looked lovely. Even though you knew your boyfriends would be wearing sweatpants or gym shorts, you still wanted to look nice for them. It’d been so long since you’ve seen each other at this point and tonight was about all their hard work.
They’d been promoting for their comeback, spending days working on the dance, filming, and appearing on various shows. This comeback was successful, and they’d even won a couple music show awards. They’d worked so hard, and you wanted to congratulate them and help them relax.
A knock was heard on your door, causing you to grin and rush to the door. “Y/N!” Haechan started, quickly pulling you into a hug. He kissed the side of your head before releasing you from his grip, knowing he would be yelled at if he kept it up too much longer.
Each of your boyfriends entered, giving you quick hugs, kisses, and compliments before they took a seat at the set dining table. You’d half expected them to have already started eating by the time your last boyfriend, Jaemin, had walked through the door. However, they were all waiting patiently for you to sit at the table with them.
“Dig in! I don’t want it to get cold,” you stated with a chuckle. They each quickly started eating, likely their first meal in many hours as they’d finished some final meetings before their official break.
Your apartment, initially quiet with the sound of your movements, humming, and the soft music playing in the background, was now booming with sound. Before you took your own seat, you slipped into the kitchen to grab the wine you’d bought for tonight, three bottles of various flavors.
“Don’t forget some wine,” you sang, setting the bottles in the middle of the table.
“You even got us wine? I love you!” Renjun confessed, reaching for a bottle and pouring himself a glass.
“Of course! You worked so hard and I wanted to congratulate you on your wins.” You blushed lightly.
“What did we ever do to deserve you, Y/N?” Jeno asked rhetorically, pouring himself a glass. You grinned, finding your own seat between Jaemin and Mark.
As you started to eat, everyone had some wine in their glass and was just as talkative as before. Usually, the boys would be much quieter as they were exhausted from work, but they were too happy with the food and wine.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
After you’d all finished your food and had a couple glasses of wine, the apartment was quiet again, reminding you that you’d left your music on. Head a little tipsy from the alcohol, you stood up, slowly moving your body with the music. You smiled and blushed but continued anyway.
After about a minute, you turned back to the table and grabbed Renjun’s hand. He got the hint quickly, standing up and joining you with the dance. He kept you close and let you twirl around his finger, following your lead. You could feel the other guys’ eyes on you two as you finished the song with a quick kiss. You couldn’t help but giggle happily before returning to the table for your next victims.
Mark and Haechan had been talking to each other quietly, which immediately called out to you. Reaching down, you grabbed one of each of their hands and pulled them away from the table. You brought them over to where Renjun had already started dancing to the next song, starting to dance between Mark and Haechan. They both quickly joined you, even bringing Renjun closer to your little huddle. Small laughs could be heard over the soft music as you lip-synced.
As the bridge of the song started, you returned to the table one last time. “Jaemin, Jeno, come dance,” you’re voice slurring ever so slightly. The two men looked at each other before following your command, joining the rest of you dancing.
The songs continued their slow pace, allowing you all to calmly move your bodies to the beat. At one point, Renjun even got Mark to do a dip, immediately getting the rest of your attention. You clapped while Jaemin cheered.
As you started to get tired and the alcohol’s effect wore off, you took a seat on the couch with another glass of wine. You sipped on it periodically as you watched your boyfriends dancing and giggling with each other.
But the exhaustion caught up with them quickly from their overworked weeks, and they joined you in the living room, sitting on the couch or floor. You retrieved the rest of the wine and some glasses, returning to the couch and pouring everyone one last glass.
“Did you have fun?” you asked softly, settling between Jeno and Haechan.
Mark and Jaemin nodded, finishing the rest of their glasses. Jaemin rested his head on Mark’s shoulder, closing his eyes. Mark titled his own head, leaning against Jaemin’s.
Renjun, who was seated on the floor by Jeno’s legs, also rested his head on Jeno’s leg, sipping absentmindedly.
The music still continued to play quietly as everyone relaxed and rested. Once you finished your own glass, you stood, deciding to clean everything up. You retrieved the empty wine glasses on the coffee table and set them on the kitchen counter near the sink. To your surprise, Haechan was already at the table, starting to help you clean everything up.
“Haechan, you don’t have to help me. Go rest.”
He simply shook his head, continuing to stack the plates. “I wanna help.” You gave him a weird look, which made him lightly hit your arm. “Don’t look at me like that. Can’t I help my partner clean up?”
You pulled your hands up defensively, laughing softly. “Sorry, just didn’t expect this.” You started grabbing all the chopsticks and spoons.
With Haechan’s help, you’d cleaned up everything a lot faster. He surprised you even further, though, when he helped you do the dishes. You’d remained skeptical of his intentions but let him help you anyway. As he dried the last plate and set it back in the cabinet, he smirked.
“Why are you smirking?” you asked carefully.
“No reason,” he said, kissing you quickly. “I just love you.”
“I love you too.”
He smiled, leading you back out to the living room. Taking a look around, you noticed the rest of them were all sound asleep, leaning on or cuddling each other. Your chest felt heavy as you noticed each of them. “Should we wake them up?” Haechan asked from beside you.
You shook your head, “They seem comfortable. Plus, we won’t all fit in my bed, so now there won’t be any fighting.” Haechan chuckled and watched as you grabbed a few blankets from your bedroom. You covered each of your sleeping boyfriends’ bodies, smiling to yourself. You then turned off the lights before heading back to your bedroom.
Haechan followed you, quickly getting comfortable on your bed. You changed out of your clothes and into something more comfortable before joining Haechan in bed. You curled up against him, already feeling like you would fall asleep any minute.
Haechan smiled to himself, “This is why I helped you,” he whispered.
You playfully hit his abdomen, “You sneaky shit.”
You couldn’t blame him, though. Deciding who would sleep where in your small apartment was something that always took a long time and ended in frustration. Having it all end up so easily was a nice break for you. Although, you’d probably hear some complaining from Renjun and Mark in the morning. You would worry about that when you woke up, though, fully content and comfortable in bed with one of your boyfriends.

You found my breaking point / Congratulations
Sometimes you’re perpetually sad about a character and want to drag other people down with you, so here, have a tragic Ironwood playlist.
It’s a much condensed and properly ordered version of the 60+ track one I’ve pretty much had on loop for over a year, and it roughly follows his emotional arc through Vol7. He starts out a hero, determined to carry on the fight without Oz, but the weight of leadership and having to be a politician when he’s much more a soldier grinds him down and pushes him further into loneliness and despair. Then Atlas is attacked, he finds out his allies have been lying to him and Ozpin never had a plan to beat Salem in the first place, and his anger, resentment and fear get the better of him and he starts making choices he never would have made before.
I could writes essays on this man and the tragedy of his fall and how he only broke like he did because so many factors, including nothing less than The Entire Narrative, conspired against him, somebody stop me
Tracks:
Hero - Jeff Williams, Caleb Hyles // The Pretender - Foo Fighters // Soldier - Fleurie // Human (Acoustic) - Rag’n’Bone Man // Weight of Living, Pt II - Bastille // Silhouette - Owl City // Icarus - Emma Blackery // Devastation and Reform - Relient K // Numb - Linkin Park // Eyes on The King - Benn // I Gave You All - Mumford & Sons // Heel Turn 2 - The Mountain Goats //  Control - Halsey // Monarch - Rise Against // Save Me - Skillet // Promises I Can’t Keep - Mike Shinoda
[Spotify link]
(Commentary on song choices under the ‘keep reading’ because I’m incapable of keeping all of these thoughts to myself)
Hero - Obvious choice, but listen, it’s a Perfect character song and I love it dearly. Also, it very neatly sets up the person he was trying and thought himself to be, as well as the fact that he’s already deeply damaged and defines his self worth in relation to what he can do for others with no thought to his own life and safety.
The Pretender - James has such strong opinions on Ozpin’s choice to keep Salem’s existence a secret, and clearly hates keeping anyone in the dark about it. He’s also determined that he’ll be the one who finally manages to take Salem down, even though generations before him have failed.
Soldier - So much of James’s identity is tied up in being a soldier and he solves problems like a soldier and that’s always been one of the things that kept him in conflict with Ozpin. Also, consider this one foreshadowing of how making compromises in pursuit of his ideals is going to be what eventually breaks him.
Human - James never admits to it and that’s one of his biggest problems, but he’s clearly struggling being only one man under the weight of so many expectations, as well as so much blame and scorn from allies and the public alike when his methods don’t actually work.
Weight of Living, Pt II - Gotta have a song in there about the weight of living, he’s thematically Atlas after all. Also, I’ve always interpreted him as being something of a generational foil to Ruby, someone who started out with her idealism and had it slowly crushed out of him. “Do you like the person you’ve become...?”
Silhouette - Someone give this poor lonely depressed bastard a hug, he so desperately needs one.
Icarus - James’s very public position and total inability to manage his public image causes him so many of his problems. In a lot of ways, he’s his own worst enemy and biggest stumbling block on that front.
Devastation and Reform - He never gets a true win. Every time it seems like he might, something else always goes wrong or something is lost along the way. And every time it happens and he gets back up to try again, he’s lost more of himself, sometimes very literally.
Numb - When things keep going wrong he starts to shut down, to shut people out, and his complicated feelings towards Ozpin are a big part of that. He’s desperate for Oz’s approval, but also resents him and is equally desperate not to make his same mistakes. It stops him from connecting with Oscar (and also Ruby, tarred by the same brush for keeping Oz’s secrets), something that might have saved him if he’d let it.
Eyes on The King - James’s allies turn on him, he starts thinking of himself as the only one capable of doing what it takes for Atlas to survive, and he’s still reeling from the fact that it seems like none of the people he chose to trust with all of his secrets and information trusted him with theirs in turn.
I Gave You All - Very much an anger-at-Ozpin song, all of his pent up rage at the constant disapproval and the lies and the realisation that the man who always criticised his methods had no real plan of his own, and even considered the battle unwinnable. It doesn’t excuse what he did, but is it any wonder he got so angry at Oz-via-Oscar in the Vault?
Heel Turn 2 - “You found my breaking point / Congratulations.” He finally loses it, makes the decision to shoot an ally, and resolves to do whatever it takes for Atlas to survive even if he ends up hated for it. I could quote so much of this song, and the only bit that doesn’t quite fit is “I don’t want to die in here”. He clearly couldn’t care less about his own life, so for that read ‘Atlas isn’t going to die today’.
Control - He has a dark side, and now he’s chosen to let it out. He doesn’t care if he has to scare people into cooperating, they Will do what he says.
Monarch - This one is James doubling down on his new course of action, on being the person he feels he has to become and trying to convince himself that he’s acting out of a determination not to repeat Oz’s mistakes rather than acting out of fear.
Save Me - James could have been saved from himself, but the tragedy is that there was no one left who could have pulled him out of his own darkness. He alienated his allies, refused to listen to people he considered to be nothing more than naïve children, and made enemies of the only two people he might have listened to as peers - Qrow and Oz/Oscar. And the idiocy of the Atlas military system meant that there was absolutely no one else who could have, or even would have, tried to drag him back from his drastic course of action.
Promises I Can’t Keep - Think of all the promises James made in his character song, the commitments to protection and strength, and join me in being extremely sad about the fact that somewhere deep down he must have known just how much he was letting people down.

tw! manipulation, mentioned underage sex, dubious consent, cheating. i also want to point out that reader is around 2-3 years younger than Iwaizumi, while Jae and Iwa are the same age. ps. this is a long chp :)
𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞
Iwaizumi has no idea of what has possessed him tonight. He doesn't know why he's walking around the city in the middle of the night a day before he should be on his way home.
He doesn't know why after the celebration he didn't follow his teammates. He doesn't know why he has barely answered your texts since after the game.
He also doesn't know why he agreed to go and see Jae, to hear her out.
He's been doing fine so far, seven months Jae clean and while the first three were bumpy; your company had made it easier to deal with. Your cheerfulness, your happiness, the adventures you've both have been planning have taken his mind off the broken heart he was nursing.
She continued to contact him, even when he begged her not to and blocking her phone was no use, she just got a new one and tried again and again. His resolve was diluted and he knew it would be a matter of time before he fell into his old habits.
lil jae: congrats on the win haji! let me invite you to a drink, im in town.
-
Iwaizumi recalls an old memory from back in high school, a few weeks before moving to California, you were sitting on his bed helping him organize his suitcase with 'essentials'. His clothes all over the place but as always, you showed enthusiasm at helping him out.
He remembers you giggling and calling him a dork while folding his Godzilla themed underwear and placing it inside his suitcase. He remembers the way you hummed some songs that you had just placed on your shared playlist because 'it's kinda your style' and it kinda is. He even remembers what you were wearing, a pair of black running shorts and a blue tank top. When you reached over the edge of his bed for his fallen socks, your cleavage was visible to his eyes, 'If a man ever peers down his shirt', he thought, 'I'll kill him without hesitating.'
But what he remembers the most is you pulling out an old shoe box from under said bed, a shoe box that held his most treasured things. Pictures from his childhood that matched the ones on your bedroom wall, doddles from your hand, your favorite flowers pressed inside a copy of your favorite book, short stories and poems, snippets of stories never finished from you. He'll never forget your teary eyes and happy smile when he took the box from you, emptying the contents carefully inside his backpack. The hug you gave him afterward still sets his heart on fire, nothing has ever been more lovely than you and your happy smile.
He also remembers Jae coming into his room right during your hug, wearing an empty smile on her face, her eyes red and raging. He's only ever seen her this mad whenever he's with you and he still doesn't get it.
She stay's to "help" when in reality all she does is glare at yn the whole time. It helps that you don't even mind the glares or the bad mood, joking that 'Jae's grumpy because we couldn't go to the movies today'.
It was late afternoon when you left, Iwaizumi had given you a bag filled with some of his stuff - things he knew you loved and adored, things he couldn't take. He watched you get inside your parents car and wave him goodbye, even though you both knew he'd be coming through your window in a few hours for movie night.
He remembers when he came back inside to find Jae naked on his bed. How angry she was and how she took it out on sex, the tension so palpable he could taste it. Once it was over, she walked towards his backpack and pulled out all of YN's things and that's when it clicked. She was mad because he was taking stuff about YN and not her, she made it clear when Jae told him, 'What the fuck is this.'
-
He remembers that hours later, he finds himself in your room squeaky clean and wearing nothing but his sweatpants and socks, his back against your front with his head against your breasts. He hadn't told you that Jae broke up with him, but he knew you had figured out he was sad because your arms cradled him since he got situated there and had not moved since.
How Jae said she wouldn't move with him in the end. How she had decided to stay in Japan and have him go to California all alone in the end, just because she wanted him to. How he begged her to come, to stay with him, to not leave him and how he watched her get dressed to go home. How she winked at him as she left with a, "Call me once you're in Cali."
How she only wants to go out when she knows he has plans with you. How she only cares about him when you're around or how messed up and used he feels ever since she took his virginity during your 14th birthday party.
He feels disgusting sometimes after sex with Jae, disgusted with himself on how wrong it is but how much he loves her still.
He didn't have to say any of that to you, the kiss on the forehead you just gave him eased it all away anyway.
-
He remembers all of this while he's kissing Jae in her hotel room, her dress and underwear discarded somewhere in the room, his cock buried deep inside of her like a starved man, Her nails racking down his chest from his unbuttoned shirt as she moaned at the feeling.
When Jae separates herself from him with half lidded eyes, she smirks, "I bet my little cousin can't even kiss right, the little virgin." She kisses the column of his neck, grazing her teeth against the skin, getting ready to mark him as hers and even though he doesn't agree with her, he stays quiet.
A memory burst through his mind as he pounds into Jae. The way your sighed his name when he settled himself inside of you, the way your nails scratched his back when he hit your G-spot, the way you moaned when his thumb circled your clit; your gummy, tight walls griped him as you came, with his name on your lips. Your soft, pillow lips that have only been his, only kissed him.
"Be safe out there, Hajime! I'll be waiting for you!" She smiled as she kissed him goodbye by the front door.
He turned to deepen the kiss, pulling her closer to him like a starved man, "Don't worry, I'm not gonna runaway, mochi."
As he walked down the steps of his house, he heard her say "I miss you already."
It's then that Iwaizumi snaps out of it.
He pushes her off of him and steps back until his back is against the wall, feeling disgusted with himself in a way he hasn't since they broke up.
"I can't do this, I won't do this, I-" he pushes himself off the wall, tucking himself in and picking up his stuff, "Never again, Jae."
Jae watches him leave, a sinister smile spreading across her face. Her gaze steady as his figure disappears into the night, "If you think you can just up and go, Haji, you are very mistaken."
She walks to where she hid her phone and chuckles as she presses send, "Lets see what my little cousin has to say, hmm?"
-
Iwaizumi was worried, it wasn't normal for you to not answer his calls or texts. He was on the road back home with the team, their ruckus would usually give him a headache, but right now? Right now he can't focus on anything except the little 'unread' mark at the bottom of his last text to you.
my one: mochi? r u ok? im on my way back home
-
He didn't expect to come back home and find you in the living room in silence. Your eyes rimmed red and puffy from crying, you didn't have to say anything for him to know what had happened.
Jae told you.
He wish he could be surprised, but Jae had been nothing but a devil all this time and he can't believe he never saw it until now. Until he married you, an angel.
"Mochi, I'm sorry. I'm very very sorry, please talk to me." He knelt at your feet, his hands on your knees trying to get you to look at him. His guilt crashing down brick by brick, he should have never gone out to see her.
"I know this means nothing to you, mochi. But I'll never see her again, only when its a family reunion or you're with me."
Silence.
"There is no excuse, but yn, please, look at me, let me explain."
She pushes him off a bit, without much force as if her sadness took away all her strength and his heart clenched. How could he do this to his best friend? Lie and lie, again and again and again.
YN-”
“No, STOP! You- you got your say, now it’s my turn.” She's shaking and her breaths are short. She's starting to have a panic attack.
I get up and advance towards her slowly, “YN you need to calm down. Here,” I place my hand on her back, “let me-”
She pushes me off, her back towards me, “Please, don’t touch me. Please, please, please.” She's sobbing and its hurts so so much.
It hurts, it hurts, it hurts.
“Remember your breathing exercises, mochi. In and out. In…”
Eventually her breathing normalizes but she still won't look at me and it takes all of my strength to not touch her.
“All I ever wanted was for you to love me, Hajime.”
Whoever said words can never hurt someone, has never been in my place. She just stabbed me without a knife and its more painful than I ever imagined.
“I wanted you to love me, to see me as your wife, as a woman but you didn’t. You don’t and I- it hurts so much.”
“But, mochi, you said you would marry me so we didn’t end up with strangers.”
“I know.”
“Then why-”
“I lied. I’ve loved you since the moment you came into my life. I’ve loved you for years, even before Jae came into the picture. I’ve loved you so so so much, I love you so much.”
“… you know about Jae? Since when?!” I made the mistake of reaching out for her, she pushed me back and said nothing. The dread of her knowing, of her finding out before today makes me sick.
“If you knew then why did you marry me!? Did you think I would change? That my feelings would change? You know I’m not like that.”
“I do know. I- thought that maybe-, but then it was clear that nothing would change but, I made a promise to you and I said it in our vows.”
“YN-”
“I know the mistake is mine. I know what all the blame is mine to take, I know it and I accept it. I’m sorry, Hajime, that’s me that you have to stay with.”
She finally turns to look at me, but I wish she hadn't. The tears are flowing steadily down her cheeks to her neck. I did this to her, I hurt her again and again, without thinking. No, without watching. Because if I had paid attention to her like Jae did, I might have seen it sooner.
“We could get a divorce, you know. That way you can stop getting hurt. Stop your heart from breaking. You don’t deserve this.”
“It’s okay. I- I give you permission to do it, to break my heart forever.”
“…What?”
She takes my hand, and in-between the tears she smiles at me as if her heart wasn't breaking in two. As if I didn't shatter her dreams for a few sloppy seconds, “It’s okay, I know what I signed up for, I knew it from the beginning. I guess I just didn’t want to accept it. So go ahead, break my heart, break it into a million pieces! I give you permission, Iwaizumi Hajime, please just - don’t leave me.”
I can't say anything, what am I supposed to say? My sweet, sweet girl is hurt and damaged and all she wants is for me to stay. I feel disgusted in a way I never did with Jae, because instead of being used, I am using her.
I bring her into my arms, and say the only words that have actual meaning between us, "I love you, mochi."
"I- I'll do better, I promise. Please YN," He gripped her shoulders tightly, "Please forgive me, I'll do whatever just, I'm so sorry, baby."
He can feel the tears spilling onto his shirt, a scorching pain expanding through his chest at the consequences of his actions. He hurt the one person who didn't deserve it, who he promised to keep safe and happy.
"Hajime, please take a bath, I wanna sleep without the smell of Jae."
His heart dropped at her words, he forgot that he had just upped and left from Jae's, only changing his clothes for comfort. His skin still smelled like her. As he separated from her, he kissed her forehead, "Join me?"
-
He laid on the bed with her hours later, her head on his chest where he could see her puffy eyes. She had washed him thoroughly to the point were he thought she had scrubbed him raw, and he couldn't blame her - he wanted to do the same since the beginning.
He pulled her closer, practically on top of him and felt her heartbeat against his own. He had done something terrible and he needed to fix it, fix this. So he needed to take the first step.
to lil jae: for someone who says they love me, u sure like to make me miserable. i don't know why u hate yn so much and tbh i don't care anymore. i don't want to see u or talk to u ever again. if u contact me, i'm gonna get a restraining order, jae. i can't do this anymore.
to lil jae: goodbye jae.
do you wish to block this number?
yes.

Yugioh S5 Ep 18: A Series of Ecological Disasters
Booting up ye old Yugioh, booting up a new aesthetic playlist to type to. (today’s playlist is webcore, which would feel like such a damn fake aesthetic, if it weren’t that every single one of these -core aesthetics are pretty damn fake and everyone knows it.)
Anyway, it’s been so long that, I’ll be honest, I thought I booted up the wrong episode:
Tumblr media
I usually skip the anime intro, but I try to watch it once each arc, cuz the intros change, and this arc was like “screw it, here’s all the other villains, just pretend this arc isn’t happening.” They had Pegasus, they had Marik, they have Bakura (who is kind of in this shot as well, you can see him phasing in there.) And like...I guess they’re hiding the villain of this arc or something because that was it. Alexander the Great got just nixed from this villain list and that’s a shame.
Just a real weird choice, but since apparently this arc didn’t air in Japan they probably had to outsource this anime intro and whatever studio in charge of it just cobbled together stuff from every other season and then a couple of shots of capsule stuff.
Speaking of capsule stuff: get a load of how many freakin lines the animators have to deal with every time they draw Grandpa.
Tumblr media
Bro saw this and was like “oh yeah, this is a Shonen Jump” and yeah. The hair does give those vibes. We got a good look at what Vegeta would look like if he really let himself go.
(read more under the cut)
Sorry, my playlist started playing a song where every single line of the song is “Adrien Brody” and it took me like a few minutes to realize I was listening to “Brodyquest” completely seriously.
Damn it, webcore, don’t betray me like this.
Anyway, this arc does something super surprising: Yugi actually hugs somebody and doesn’t look like he’s going to pass out standing up.
Tumblr media
It is pretty fitting that the good Yugi hug would go to Grandpa.
And, as night falls, Joey Wheeler has gotten hungry, and there is nothing to eat but his new best friend and spirit animal, baby dragon. Unfortunately he shares life points with the dragon, and I think if you eat it that just instakills you.
Tumblr media
And directly underneath him--since this world is like 100 feet wide and things just conveniently happen--Tea has told everyone that they needed to stop worrying about Joey. Which is a lot coming from Tea, because her worrying about Yugi/Yami getting hurt is most of what occupies her headspace in this series.
But even Tea was like, screw Joey, I guess.
Tumblr media
Who kinda just falls directly into them upside down, and shows us what Joey’s hair looks like when it’s sticking straight up.
Tumblr media
For reals, admire how long Joey Wheeler’s hair is. If Tea were upside down, she would have the same length of hair.
Also speaking of Vegeta, I am low key concerned that Joey has what appears to be a significant amount of male pattern balding going on for a teenager.
Tumblr media
Apparently getting set on fire many, many times did have an effect on Joey, and this massive pompadour he wears is a combover. Poor baby.
Holy crap, if this is what card stress and getting killed multiple times did to Joey Wheeler, can you imagine what’s going on under Seto’s bangs? That’s probably why his bangs ride so low, Seto likely wears a freakin toupee.
Guys, Joey’s gonna lose his hair at 25 at this rate. Those locks just aren’t long for this world. Poor baby.
Tumblr media
After Joey rejoins the party, he immediately eats all of their food. Not sure why they can’t just have Baby Dragon eat like...whatever Baby Dragon naturally eats...and then transform that into shared Joey Wheeler life points, but it’s not clear exactly how much of a life-connection they have with their Yugioh monsters. Not like it matters because Joey Wheeler is default starving all the time anyway.
Tumblr media
Tristan has decided we should start laying blame, I guess because Duke Devlin isn’t here anymore to be the local kill joy. This doesn’t seem to be important at any point, and most of the characters are just ignoring Tristan because like...once you’re in the haunted game in a haunted tomb in a random part of India--it’s kind of moot to argue about who’s fault that is, youknow?
Joey reminds us that he found this quest item in a treasure chest under a secret waterfall. No one says “that was convenient that you landed there after getting chased through a ravine by man-eating birds after you got your dragon from when you got your crotch injury from getting spliced by that tree.”
Tumblr media
Which is when Tea says “Wait! We haven’t had a plot thing happen in like 4 seconds! Wait!”
Tumblr media
Hey what degree of “I don’t trust nature” do you have to be to assume that all the flowers are trying to eat you?
Like what level of anxiety is Tea where she not only is like “pretty sure the flowers are going to destroy us?” but also...she’s correct? Like she’s not wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They set the dog flowers on fire, but unlike the Jungle Book this doesn’t solve any problems (which apparently got taken off the Disney+ kid’s menu so...yet again, I make a Disney reference in these recaps that future generations will not understand because so much of the Disney library has been banned from the vault. It’s almost like Disney should let go of that copyright they held on for like a hundred years, because what they’re holding on to is only going to get more racist with time. But nah. Gotta hold on with their greedy mickey mouse gloves.)
So instead of using fire, Tristan used his monster to electrocute the air (?) and blind the dogs. Wisely, the animators quickly jumped to this other scene so we wouldn’t have to analyze why it’s suddenly daytime or why that plan would even work.
Tumblr media
Joey and Tristan do a lot of buddy buddy stuff this arc. Usually we see a lot of Joey and Yugi’s bottomless friendship, but we don’t get this much Tristan/Joey love. So shippers rejoice, these two seem to have several coordinated dances and songs...and I’d say that teens don’t typically do that, but I went to summer camp, there are situational places where teens will sing the entire vacation and make coordinated dances.
Weirdly, since Joey and Tristan share so much time together, this also means Tea and Yugi actually sit next to eachother for a lot of this arc, almost as if they were a couple. Mind you, they’re chaperoned closely by Grandpa, but youknow...that’s a different energy than I’m used to seeing.
That and like, they can’t have Tea dance with them because last time she did a dance, it was like a DDR fight and she elbowed some guy like it was a fisticuffs situation. Like there was some sort of dance war going on behind the scenes of Yugioh’s card war, and it came up once and I guess Tea resolved it and the dance fights haven’t come back since.
Overall, if they did a dance with Tea, they would get kneed in the face, so that’s probably why they insist on doing cancans as a duet and not a trio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Joey and Tristan freak out over having no food, Tea decides to just start eating in front of them.
Tumblr media
and like...didn’t Joey eat that food yesterday? Like last night? The short term memory loss on all these fools.
Immediately after this we realize something weird in the water. That’s right, it’s a massive head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yugi seems to have forgotten they lit this turtle on fire and electrocuted the entire sky the night before. Not that it mattered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were like...nesting birds on those trees on that island. What the hell? They just killed so MANY of those man-eating dogs that are flowers.
Seriously are land turtles allowed to just...dive underwater for long periods of time? How does that ecosystem even work? It’s like...That’s wild to think about.
Tumblr media
Inside the temple, they have to fight a genie or something.

In case you were wondering, the only reason Tea and Grandpa got iced is because they were the closest to the door. The two who were actually standing out of harms way were the closest to harm the whole time.
Bro tells me this is also what will happen to you if you are in the front or the back of the party while playing Cthulu D&D
Anyway, Pharaoh decides to disclose that his big problem of feeling guilty all the time and taking all the blame, which he did all of last season...is still a huge problem he will probably never tackle.
Tumblr media
Straight up, don’t be fooled by my caps, everyone else has completely forgotten about Alex, who is still running around that temple up there. They haven’t even asked Grandpa “hey is this your protege? Is this your mentee you never told us about?” Nah. They already forgot.
How wild is it that Pharaoh thinks this is all his fault when he was the only one who was like “YUGI IT’S A TRAP DON’T GO IN THE- well...OK I guess we’re doing this, fine.” Is he upset he didn’t take control from Yugi and walk back to the plane? Because that’s the only way he could even be partially responsible, He was the only guy who was like “I see the end from the beginning on this y’all, and it’s the massive pyramid in India.”
Speaking of forgetting, they came across this language Pharaoh has decided to have nothing to do with.
Tumblr media
This was actually a riddle and it was like...it was a riddle, sure, I guess.
Tumblr media
And so Joey Wheeler does not hallucinate his dead wife from a previous incarnation and get on the back of his Baby Dragon to sail away into the sunset. Instead they’re just gonna walk.
Too bad Tea’s orb covered in wings only seems to hover a bit. Every single wing on that weird orb is absolutely useless.
And then Pharaoh’s pokemon is just a fire--which is hard to sit on--and Celtic Guardian...who would allow it, sure, but probably doesn’t fly (I think. He might fly)
And then Tristan’s Pokemon kinda seems like if you sit on it, you will get electrocuted. It can probably fly though. It’s very round. Seems like an anime thing that the more round your mascot character is, the more likely it can at least bounce a good distance.
So, next time, I’m just going to assume that we are going to do even more camping. And youknow, if you told me exactly HOW MUCH CAMPING was in this card game show with super future tech, I would not have believed you. But like...a lot of this series is set in the woods right? Like a lot a lot? I have grown to appreciate the woods.
Anyway, as always, if you just got here, this is a link to read these in chrono order:

See you next time!

A/N: Found this song and thought: why not? I kind of want to do a series (if you can call it that) based on Pinguini Tattici Nuceari’s songs because I’ve been listeniing to them non-stop and they’re genius! But I do not guarantee. Also, yes, hi, it’s me again, coming on here to post something nobody asked for. You can find the song here and the full English translation here. Hope you enjoy it!🍓❤
Warnings: sad times + I haven’t written in months
/ Masterlist / masterlist 2
E se m'hai visto piangere (If you saw me crying) Sappi che era un'illusione ottica (Just know that it was only an optical illusion) Stavo solo togliendo il mare dai miei occhi (I was just getting the sea out of my eyes)
Your brows knitted in confusion once you spotted Angel hunched over the bed, his back to the door, where you currently stood. You’d never seen him cry, was he crying? Yeah, you were almost sure he was. You could hear quiet sniffles.
Knocking on the door, you made your presence known, a small smile at your lips, ready to comfort him. He turned his head towards you, looking over his shoulders to see you standing at the door of his room. He turned back around, looking straight ahead and trying to compose himself, not wanting you to know that he was, in fact, crying. Wiping the few tears that were just below his lower lash line, he put on a brave face, the face that always made him look so sure of himself, he had mastered it over the years.
He got up and walked over to where you were standing, giving you a hug and a kiss on the forehead, as you let him envelope your body in his, grateful for the heat his body brought to yours, feeling calm, letting out a breath when his fingers sneaked below your shirt, making contact with the skin of your waist.
“How was your day?”, he asked, not moving from the position, keeping his cheek pressed to your head, the smell of your hair filling his nostrils and making him more at ease. “Good – you answered, your hands moving soothingly up and down his back – how ‘bout you? You okay?”, you murmured, kissing his cheek and moving your head so you could look him in the eyes.
Mi chiedi come sto e non te lo dirò (You ask me how I'm doing but I won't tell you)
“Yeah, I’m good”, he mumbled, keeping you tight against him. The way he was breathing and the sound of his voice gave him away, though, but if you noticed, which you had, you didn’t point it out: if he didn’t say what was bothering him, it meant that he didn’t want to share it and you were fine with it. He knew he could come to you if he needed help. Instead, he kept to himself, like he always did, but there was only so much he could take… it got to a point he felt like he was about to explode, and yet he didn’t let anything show, opting to cry in the shower or when sleeping alone in his bed. You already had too much on your plate, he didn’t have to add his problems. It wasn’t fair to you.
I tuoi segreti poi a chi li racconterai (So who are you going to tell your secrets to?) Tu che rimani sempre la mia password del Wi-Fi (You're still my Wi-Fi password) E chi sa se lo sai (And maybe you don't even know it)
After your breakup, he tried to set a routine that would help him not to think about you. He worked at the scrapyard, he went on rides, he went to parties, he started working out more, he was doing everything in his power to avoid letting his brain run free, trying to occupy it with other thoughts in order to keep you out of his head. The only reason he noticed that your name was still the password to his wi-fi was because the new prospect asked if he could connect his laptop to the wi-fi. And your name sounded bitter in his mouth, he said it like he almost didn’t want to pronounce it, and saying it out loud brought back all the memories that he had kept stashed in the back of his mind, he hadn’t forgotten the pain in your eyes when you parted ways, or the sound of your voice when you said goodbye for the last time.
E scrivevo tutti i miei segreti (And I used to write down all my secrets) Col pastello bianco sul diario (With a white crayon in my diary) Speravo che venissi a colorarli (Hoping you would come and color them in)
Perché un addio suona troppo serio (Goodbye sounds too serious) E allora ti dirò bye bye (So I'll just tell you "bye bye")
You approached his house with a bag in hand, full of the things that Angel had left at your apartment, and you had come to retrieve the things you had left at his place. The exchange was almost silent, you greeted each other, avoiding saying anything that could ruin the moment, no empty words or empty promises, nothing more than what was necessary. When you were done collecting your things, he was in his living room, inspecting the stuff that you had brought back almost as if he didn’t recognize his own possessions. You stood in front of the door for a few seconds, before gaining his attention by announcing that you were leaving. He came to open the door for you and watched as you put your stuff in the car, climbing in and turning the engine on. If you had to speak again, you’d have burst into tears, so you opted for a small wave, trying to control your breathing and not cry in front of him. He didn’t say goodbye, that word sounded bad, and heavy, and emotional, and he really couldn’t bring himself to even look you in the eyes as you drove away from his house. When the noise of your car was replaced by silence again, he let out a shaky breath and went back inside, having to face the memories that were encased in the bag you had returned to him.
E ti auguro il meglio, i cieli stellati, le notti migliori e le docce di altri (I wish you all the best, starry skies, the best of nights, and someone else's shower)
Dove tu forse non stonerai più (where maybe you won't be so out of tune)
While getting the shower ready after his workout, he put a random playlist on, and the sound bounced off the walls as he turned the volume higher. You liked to blame your off-key singing o the acoustics of his bathroom and he just liked poking your sides, making a funny remark about how you should audition for X-factor, then. He hoped you’d find a bathroom where your voice didn’t sound as bad as it did in his, and he hoped you’d be happy, even if it wasn’t going to be on the back of his truck while stargazing. He hoped you’d be happy, even if it wasn’t with him.

Last Christmas
Tumblr media
AN: Listening to Christmas songs in September is totally normal, right? I was inspired by a couple of songs and I’m procrastinating even though I should really study for some upcoming exams but I had to finish this first. Please enjoy this angsty fluff (is that even a thing?) with one of our favorite Hockey Hunks™.
Word Count: 3.7k
Warnings: There might be a swear word or two and one mention of sex but that’s it
My other writing can be found here
For the first time since the move you finally felt at home and not out of place. To anyone it might only be a regular Wednesday but to you it was more than that. Today marked the day you’d finally managed to clear out the last few boxes, ridding yourself of the only remaining evidence that proved you were alone in a new city, a new country.
You wouldn’t stay alone for long though, your new job was set to start on Monday and you’d always made friends fairly fast so you weren’t worried in the slightest, instead enjoying the quiet that was your apartment for now.
With Christmas less than a month away you’d finally managed to decorate the apartment accordingly and to say you were proud would be an understatement. Picking out a Christmas tree by yourself had been an adult awakening, something you’d always dreamt about.
When you were younger you had imagined a certain someone with you so you could decorate side by side but that hadn’t been an option in years. Although with the move it could be, but you quickly pushed that thought out of your head.
Locating the box with the decorations - some you’d stolen from home - had taken quite a while but as you held the hand-painted angel that had once belonged to your great-grandmother in your hands all trouble was forgotten. You’d have to climb on a stool or something to get it on top of the tree but for now you carefully set it aside, taking a look at your surroundings instead.
The string lights made your apartment glow in warm light that only added to the appeal of the city lights shining in through the big windows. The new job had come with a very attractive signing bonus and while the place wasn’t huge, the modern finishes had made you fall in love instantly.
You hadn’t even realized how much time had passed because you’d been so immersed in decorating and cleaning but the sun had long set and your supper had been quite a while ago. The TV was still on from when you’d turned it on for some background noise, not really paying attention but instead focusing on humming along to your Christmas playlist.
You put on some water and quickly changed into a pair of comfortable leggings and your favorite sweatshirt from your time at Dalhousie University so you could spend the rest of your evening cuddled up on the couch with a mug of tea and continue the series you’d started to binge watch a couple of weeks ago. You’d only just pulled the hem of the sweatshirt down your body when you heard your doorbell ring.
Who would show up at your apartment unannounced at this time?
You quickly made your way back into the living space and over to the door so you could check the peep-hole, your heart skipping a beat once you realized who was on the other side of the door. For a second you contemplated simply not opening, but while you were many things in your life, a coward wasn’t one of them.
You knew he could tell that you were home from the music still playing over the speakers and the lights probably escaping your apartment through the slit below the door so you didn’t hesitate long before unlocking the door with shaky hands and swinging it open.
Seeing him again, leaning against the wall opposite your apartment door, was like someone had thrown a bucket of ice cold water at your face. As soon as he realized that you’d actually opened the door he practically jumped from his spot and took two big steps until he was standing a lot closer to you.
You looked up at him, really looked up at him and with him standing there, looking so much like the Pierre you knew but so differently at the same time you felt yourself being catapulted to the day that changed your life all these years ago.
NHL Entry Draft Day back in 2016.
You weren’t religious by any means and you only ever went to church on Christmas out of a feeling of obligation towards your parents but God had you prayed for Pierre to stay close to you. It hadn’t been fair to him, you were well aware of that but for one day you allowed yourself to be selfish. You knew that he was living his dream, finally getting to play in the NHL like he’d always said he would but you were also thinking about your dreams. Dreams that involved him by your side.
Perhaps you were to blame for this mess. It was you who had fallen for the funny hockey player almost two years ago after all, knowing full well that he had big dreams that didn’t really mesh well with yours to go to university in Halifax, a place your family had gone to for ages.
You’d secretly hoped that perhaps Ottawa or Montreal would select him, even if he deserved to be picked long before it was their turn. But at least he’d be at least somewhat close to you then. When he’d been picked third by Columbus you’d been so shocked that you barely remembered kissing him on live television. You’d watched him get on that stage and put on the jersey but instead of crying happy tears at the sight of his dream coming true, you were crying because you knew that this was most likely the beginning of the end of your relationship.
There’d be well over 2.000 kilometers between the two of you sometime soon and although you’d prepared yourself for this for weeks it still hurt more than you could ever imagine. But you still smiled at him all these hours later when you finally got to see him again, telling him how incredibly proud you were.
You tried your best to enjoy that summer, knowing full well that it might be your last one with him. With fall approaching he helped you move your stuff to Halifax while preparing for his own departure to Columbus.
A departure that didn’t come though, because he hadn’t made the roster for the 2016-2017 season and had instead been sent back to play in Sydney, something that had devastated him.
To say that it was hard would put it mildly. You were over four hours away from him and your home and with your new life picking up keeping in touch kept getting more and more difficult. With his travels for the team and your classes you barely saw each other, a series of missed calls and late responses really the only thing that connected you to him. Christmas was the first time you’d seen him in three weeks but you still made the best of it, spending time with him every day and for a little while things were like they used to be.
When he told you that he’d been traded to Boisbriand afterwards you knew that this was it. Pierre had known as well, the defeated look in his eyes mirroring your own and giving him away.
So you’d said your goodbyes, wanting to end things on a good note instead of going through another string of ‘Sorry I couldn’t pick up the phone earlier but call me back when you get this’ and constantly feeling left out. You’d cried, as did Pierre when you hugged him one last time, him desperately wiping your tears away and pressing a lingering kiss to your forehead before leaving.
He’d ruined hockey for you then, the sport you once loved and spent so much time watching. No more time spent at the rink cuddled under your blanket and gossiping with the other girlfriends but you didn’t miss it as much as you missed him.
You couldn’t even bear to watch him on TV so you’d missed when he scored his first NHL goal during his very first game in the league and all the other ones that followed. It was only when the Blue Jackets had their playoff run earlier this year that you’d finally managed to look at his face on your screen, over two years after you’d last seen him in person.
But now he was here, standing in front of you again.
“I-“, he began before stopping himself, rubbing his hand over his face before dropping it back down to his side and continuing, “I’m sorry for just barging in like this but my mom told me you moved here and I didn’t see it until after the game but I just had to come see for myself. Apparently our families still talk..”
You finally allowed yourself to properly looking at him, trailing your eyes over the features that were once so familiar. He’d grown a bit since you’d last seen him, not just in height but he was also a lot bulkier and more muscular than he used to be, filling out the suit jacket that sat snugly around his shoulders. He must have come straight from the game, hair still a bit wet and curlier than ever, a black pea coat folded over his arm and a duffel bag slung around his torso. You felt a bit out of place in your comfortable clothes compared to his suit that was probably designer but then you scolded yourself because this was Pierre and he’d seen you a lot worse.
“Yeah I know. I ran into your mom this summer when she was in our kitchen for a wine night they apparently have regularly.” You didn’t tell him how hard it had been to not ask about how he was doing and instead make bland small talk before you could finally disappear to your old room.
How could your parents not be friends anymore after your mothers had once joked about wanting a wine bar exclusively for them at your wedding? You didn’t blame your mom for telling his mother either, you knew that she only had good intentions and she’d always wanted the two of you to get back together.
In fact you weren’t completely innocent in the situation either. It was you who had applied for a position in Columbus after graduating this year after all, thoughts of what could be in the back of your mind even if you were adamant about denying it.
“You look good Y/N. I didn’t think it was possible but you’re somehow even more beautiful than you were the last time I saw you.”
You were about to remind him that the last time he’d seen you your eyes had been all red and puffy from crying – which was anything but beautiful – but before you could even get one word out the vintage kettle you had put on the stove to make tea let out its loud screeching noise, indicating that the water was done. You weren’t about to be rude and just Leave Pierre in the hallway just like that so without a second thought you invited him inside before turning around to take the kettle off the stove.
“Do you want some tea as well?”, you asked on a whim, not really knowing what else to do with the stranger that wasn’t really a stranger standing in the middle of your living room. He’d taken his shoes off by the door, apparently still remembering how you much you hated it when people wore shoes indoors and you watched him carefully drape his coat over the back of a chair.
“Sure, thanks.”
You took out a second mug and carefully poured the tea over the tea bags, the scent soon filling the apartment. It was the same tea you always drank during the winter months, ever since you were a little kid. Pierre grabbed the second mug off the counter from next to you and quickly took a peak at the label before giving you a knowing smile. You’d made that tea for the both of you so many times that this felt almost normal, even if your current situation was anything but.
“I’m sorry that you guys lost tonight”, you said to fill the silence that was now falling over the apartment. He looked over with a surprised look, raising his eyebrows.
“You watched the game?”
“Not all of it. I was busy decorating and doing other stuff around the apartment but I turned it on and checked the score from time to time”, you admitted sheepishly, raising the mug to your face in pretense of blowing to battle the boiling hot water but actually hiding away from his attentive stare. He’d looked at you all kinds of ways over your years with him but you had never been nervous because of it, except for that one night with him where he’d seen you naked for the first time and you’d lost your virginities to each other.
Thinking about sex with him wasn’t helping your cause either though because while the first few times had been a little awkward but still fun, the two of you quickly improved and the images of him above you or his head between your legs were only turning your cheeks even more red.
He seemed to drop the subject, thankfully, and instead moved over towards the Christmas tree, admiring your work. You slowly followed him, mug closely clutched to your chest and sat down on the sofa, admiring the way he looked in your apartment instead. The time apart had treated him well and while it was a bit weird to see him with a beard outside of playoffs there was no denying that he looked better than ever.
“I see you still like to live in an environment that resembles hell temperature wise”, he chuckled before he put down his own mug on the couch table and shrugged off his suit jacket. You tried your best not to stare as he popped open the first two bottoms of his shirt before moving on to roll up his sleeves while sitting down a respectable distance away but you were unsuccessful. For the first time you saw his tattoos, as his skin had been innocent and bare up until your breakup but you couldn’t ignore how good he looked with them. Your hands were itching to trace the patterns and because you didn’t entirely trust yourself to be able to control yourself you sat on them to avoid any embarrassment.
You hadn’t even realized that your Christmas playlist had continued playing over the speakers until the familiar opening tunes of “Last Christmas” filled the apartment. You quickly jumped up, reaching for your phone so you could stop the music from playing. It reminded you too much of the last Christmas you’d had with Pierre, now almost three years ago. You’d given him your heart and while he hadn’t exactly given it away he’d still broken it when he’d left.
When you turned back around you noticed the slight blush that painted his cheeks, he’d apparently come to the same realization as you. For a moment the silence was uncomfortable and you were reminded of the time right before the breakup when you didn’t know what to say or do around him, always walking on eggshells for fear of losing him. You’d lost him either way but that was beside the point.
Pierre cleared his throat before speaking up, ripping you out of your spiraling thoughts.
“Y/N I- I have to ask. Why are you here?”
You knew that you should just be honest and tell him that you were in a way here because of him but you weren’t ready to take that kind of leap just yet. You hadn’t kept up with his personal life for fear of finding something you couldn’t bear and for all you knew he could have a girlfriend right now.
“Well why are you?”, you simply responded instead, leaning back on the couch so you could properly gauge his reaction. You weren’t the one who had knocked on his door late at night.
“Fair enough, I guess”, he huffed before running his hand over his face in the way that had once been so familiar to you.
“When I read that text from my mom, telling me that you lived in Columbus now – that you weren’t thousands of kilometers away anymore I just had to see you. I called my mom to ask if she had your address and you have no idea how smug she sounded when she said she’d text it to me.”
You chuckled at his exasperated expression, knowing full well how his mother could be but stayed quiet to let him continue.
“The team knows about you as well and if I even told you half the shit I had to listen to when I practically sprinted out of the locker room you wouldn’t believe me.”
This made you laugh out loud and when you saw him smile at you fondly your heart skipped a beat for the second time that night.
“What I’m actually trying to say – but failing miserably at – is that I never really got over you and seeing you know only confirmed that. I can’t believe I let you go all these years ago, I was an idiot for thinking I could do it without you because I was absolutely miserable after leaving you”, he finished and you hadn’t even realized that you’d started crying until he reached up to gently wipe your tears away.
“Look I know that we can’t just continue like nothing happened but please bébé, please give me a second chance. I won’t leave you again, I promise.” The fact that he’d used the pet name he’d given you when you first started dating was all it took for you to leap towards him. He wrapped his arms around you as well, creating that perfect cocoon of Pierre that you’d missed so much. When he kissed your forehead this time you couldn’t feel your heart breaking, instead the warmth that flooded your body only glued all those pieces back together.
You knew that there was still a chance that he’d get traded again and that because of his job he’d have to spend quite some time on the road but you’d been miserable after he’d left as well. At least this time you’d know that he’d always come back for you.
“I’m so glad that our mothers love their wine nights and gossip, otherwise you never would’ve knocked at my door and I never would’ve gotten you back.”
“So we’re really doing this? We’re trying again?”, he asked, pulling you back at arm’s length so he could properly take a look at you. You nodded, not being able to stop the big smile spreading on your face.
“Would it be completely out of place if I kissed you right now?”
“Not at all”, you responded before crawling closer towards him until you straddled his lap. His hands reached up to cup your face, thumbs wiping the last of your tears away – happy tears this time – and then he finally pulled you in for a kiss.
Nothing felt more like coming home than kissing Pierre.
The way his lips moved against yours was so familiar that you couldn’t help but sigh into the kiss, reaching up for his shoulders so you could ground yourself in him while simultaneously getting lost in the way his body felt against yours. He buried his hands in your hair and his beard was scratching your skin but you didn’t care, instead letting him pull you closer and deepening the kiss until the only thought you could form was IloveyouIloveyouIloveyoustill.
Eventually you had to pull away though, both of you panting at the lack of air and the closeness of your bodies. It had been so long since you’d last felt his breath fan across your face like this, seen the look in his eyes as he looked at you with absolute wonder but it was as if nothing had changed, the two of you easily picking up where you left off.
“You know that our moms are gonna take credit for that, right? We’re never gonna hear the end of it”, he suddenly groaned and you giggled at his exasperated tone.
“I can live with that as long as it means that I get to have you with me again.”
He pulled you in for another sweet kiss before letting you go again, smiling up at you. You watched his gaze shift to something behind you, twisting your body in his lap so you could see what had caught his attention.
“Is that the Y/L/N Christmas angel? Did you steal it?” He stood up with you still in his lap, slowly putting you down before walking over to where you’d set the decoration earlier.
“It is but I didn’t steal it. Mom gave it to me so I’d have a piece of home with me. I’m not tall enough to put it on the top though and I haven’t gotten around to finding something to climb yet.”
“Need some help with putting it up? Here’s another piece of home ready to be climbed”, Pierre said, extending his arms to the sides and taking a step backwards so he was standing by the tree, angel still in one hand. You shook your head at him while laughing but you still moved closer, ready to climb him like a tree like you’d done hundreds of times before.
Still laughing you jumped on his back and he handed you the angel before wrapping his arms around your legs to support you. With combined forces you were able to complete the tree and Pierre let you down so you could both properly admire your work.
Your dream had come true after all.
You felt him move away from you before he was standing right behind you again, the famous tune of Wham! playing again over the speakers. He wrapped his arms around you from behind and you placed your hands on his forearms, slowly tracing your fingers over the black ink under his skin.
“You’re mon ange Y/N, you know that right? My angel. My someone special.”
Standing on your tippy toes you placed a soft kiss on his jaw before leaning your head back against him, not really knowing how to put your feelings in words right now but you knew he understood by the way he squeezed you tightly, resting his head on top of yours.
This year you’d given your heart to someone truly special.. again.
Feedback is always appreciated 🥰🥰

The Sun, the Moon, the Whole Sky Too
Pairing: America/Romano.
Rating: Teen, but only for cursing.
Warnings: This fic is mostly fluff, but there is some vague, brief discussion of historical imperialism in Hawaii.
Word Count: 1884
Summary: Romano is not normally an early riser, but he is willing to wake up at 2:30 a.m., drink shitty hotel coffee, and brave freezing temperatures to watch a sunrise on top of a volcano with America.
A/N: Written for Itapan/Romerica week Day 7 run by @welovefrukmerunning and the prompt “sunrise.” I’ve never been to Hawaii, and all my information about America and Romano’s trip and the Māui legend comes from the Internet.
Romano was not a person who believed in waking up early. He preferred a leisurely start to his day: a light breakfast, a cappuccino or two, and a boyfriend who could be persuaded to collapse back into bed rather than dragging him out of his warm cocoon of blankets before the sun was even up.
So when Savino felt arms picking him up while he should have still been deep in slumber, his first reaction was to groan in exasperation. “Jesus fucking Christ, Fredo. What time is it?”
“2:30 a.m. Time to rise and shine, Vinny.”
Romano leaned his head into America’s chest, because he was much too exhausted to fight with him, even if he was severely annoyed right now. “Thought you said you wanted to see sunrise at the top of the volcano.”
“I do. But the sun rises before six o’clock in the summer, and it’ll take us at least two hours to get to Puʻu ʻUlaʻula in the car. And that’s without stopping for restroom breaks.”
Savino yawned as Alfred set him down on his feet in front of his suitcase. “I need coffee. Now.”
America pushed a thermos towards him. “Here you go. But fair warning, it’s the best I could do with the little machine here in the room.”
Savino wrinkled his nose as he took a sip. Alfred wasn’t kidding. This coffee was horrible. When America saw Romano’s reaction, he chuckled and kissed his forehead. “Don’t worry, we can stop for breakfast on the way back. I’m sure the coffee at the Kula Lodge will be much more to your liking.”
“Hope so.” He took a deep sip and watched as Alfred, who seemed to be unnaturally full of energy this morning, hummed and packed a cooler with snacks for their trip. Once Romano had drained the thermos and was as awake as he was ever going to be this early in the morning, he got dressed in the sweater, parka, gloves, and jeans America had told him to pack specifically for this experience. Hawaii was generally warm during the summer, but at more than 3000 meters above sea level before the sun rose, the temperatures at the peak of Haleakalā would barely be above 0 degrees Celsius when they arrived. Romano disliked the cold just as much as he disliked waking up before even a rooster would. If anyone else had proposed he wake up at 2:30 in the morning so he could watch sunrise at the top of a mountain, Savino would have bluntly told them they were insane. Maybe Alfredo was a little crazy for suggesting this, but he was also impossible to say no to, especially when he promised Savino that the view of the sunrise would be “almost as gorgeous as you.”
When they were both ready to go, America cheerfully led them out of their hotel room and took them out to his car. Romano squinted into the darkness skeptically.
“Are you sure this is safe? I mean, you are driving up a mountain.” Romano had enough mountains in his home to know how dangerous driving on mountain roads could be.
“We’ll be fine. I know these roads like the back of my hand. Besides, if I was gonna do something really dangerous, I wouldn’t do it with precious cargo like you in the car.” Alfred winked at him, and Savino rolled his eyes, pretended he wasn’t flattered at America casually referring to him as “precious,” and got in the passenger seat.
As America was setting up his iPod, Romano decided he had one last question to ask his boyfriend. “Aren’t you tired? Like, at all?”
“Not right now, but I’ll probably crash later in the day. I took some 5-hour energy this morning and drank about twice as much coffee as you did, so I’ll be good to go. Plus, I brought some snacks and have music to make sure I’ll stay perfectly alert for the drive.”
Romano buckled his seatbelt and stared out the windshield into the blackness. “Don’t expect me to stay awake the whole time. Because that is definitely not happening.” He could already feel himself getting sleepy, even though the passenger seat in Fredo’s car was a lot less comfortable than the bed back in the hotel.
Alfred laughed. “I figured as much.” He turned on the car, and started to back out of his parking space at the hotel, singing along to his “island tunes” mix. America wasn’t much of a singer, but he was loud and entertaining enough to keep Romano awake for a while.
Alfred’s playlist was an eclectic mix of Don Ho, Elvis Presley, and several singers Romano didn’t know the names of (or wouldn’t even attempt to say without abbreviating, like the one America called Bruddah IZ). The songs in Hawaiian tripped as easily off America’s tongue as the English ones did.
There was only one song on his playlist America didn’t sing along to. His hands tightened on the steering wheel as the song began with a slower, sadder melody. At first, Romano didn’t understand why Alfred wasn’t singing along, nor why he had that solemn, guilty expression on his face, but then he heard the English lyrics talking about highways through sacred ground and the land that was taken away. And considering they were on a highway right now…
Romano didn’t know what to tell America. He couldn’t tell America that it wasn’t his fault, or that he wasn’t to blame for what had happened to the Hawaiian people. All he could do was give America a weak smile once the song was over. He would have squeezed his hand if it hadn’t been on the steering wheel.
America let out a deep breath. “That one’s hard for me to listen to. But I think it’s important for me to hear it and to acknowledge that stuff, you know?”
Romano nodded. “Yeah. That makes sense.”
“They didn’t want to be my people, but now they are, just as much as anyone else is. My government’s never let me do much, but I can try to do my best for them. For them, and for everybody else.” America turned up the volume on his stereo and started singing, and his happiness seemed a bit more forced than usual.
Romano frowned, but didn’t say anything. Now was hardly a good time to make Alfred confront his guilt about American imperialism, or his tendencies to mask more negative emotions with false levity and engage in the sort of naïve, optimistic thinking that would only lead to disappointment down the line, when people inevitably failed to live up to his expectations. Maybe they would talk about this later, at some point when Romano wasn’t so tired he could barely keep his eyes open. Probably after they had returned to the mainland.
Eventually, Savino’s exhaustion won out over his worry. He was woken up by America vigorously shaking his shoulder. “Hey, sleepyhead. Time to wake up again.”
Savino rubbed at his eyes. “We there yet?”
“Not quite, but we’re at the Visitor’s Center. This is your last chance to go to the bathroom before we head up to the summit.”
Now that he was awake, his bladder felt uncomfortably full from the thermos full of coffee he had earlier. Romano unbuckled his seatbelt. “Yeah, okay, I’ll go.”
After using the facilities, America pulled out another thermos of coffee. “I figured you’d still be tired, so I packed this for you just in case.”
Romano accepted the thermos gratefully. “I could kiss you right now.”
Alfred giggled and leaned over to do just that. He pulled back a few seconds later with a goofy grin on his face, and Romano was smiling too.
America was back to his normal ebullient self by the time they reached the summit. He slung a blanket and a towel over his shoulders, took the cooler of snacks in one hand, and held Romano’s hand with the other. “Look at the stars, Vinny! Look at the stars!”
Savino laughed at his boyfriend’s childlike enthusiasm. “I can see the stars, tesoro.” He looked up towards the sky, where the tiny pinpricks of light from millions of miles away were much more visible than they would be down the volcano.
“They’ve got an astronomical research observatory over there.” Alfred pointed towards a group of buildings Savino could barely see through the distance. “I’ve actually been there, and to the Gemini North one up on Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Maybe in a few days, I could take you back up here for the sunset and to look at the stars some more. Or we could go Mauna Kea if you want.”
“We can always do that the next time we come to Hawaii too. There’s plenty of time for trips in the future.”
Alfred proceeded to give Savino a hug that lifted him off his feet and peppered the side of his face in kisses until Savino was cackling and weakly squirming to get away. Then he set him back down, took his hand, and led them to a spot where they could watch the sunrise together.
The temperature at the top of Halekalā was just as ridiculously cold as America had warned him it would be. But with the towel on the ground to keep their butts dry, the blanket wrapped around both their bodies, and his cuddle monster of a boyfriend, it wasn’t so bad.
There were a lot of other people around them, chatting and setting up their cameras, but a hush fell over the crowd when the first rays of dawn began to lighten the sky. Romano gasped when he saw that view America had spoken so highly of. With the clouds rolling in over the crater below them and the spectacular colors, they seemed to be in heaven itself.
“Told you it’d be worth it,” America smugly whispered.
Romano nodded, too awestruck to say anything, and America snapped a few photos to preserve the experience.
As people began to head back to their cars and leave, Romano turned to face his boyfriend. “Thanks for bringing me up here, amore.”
“Of course. There’s no one else I’d rather watch this sunrise with than you.”
Savino gave him a slow, sleepy kiss then turned back around to watch the sky for the next several minutes.
Eventually they were ready to go. America was holding Romano’s hand on their way back to the car. “You know, there’s a legend about this place. Apparently, Māui came up here before sunrise, just like we did, and lassoed the sun and beat him into submission. All so the sun would move more slowly across the sky and his mom would have more time to dry her bark cloth.”
Romano snorted. “He sounds like a very devoted son.”
“I’d figure out how to lasso the sun for you if you wanted. The sun, the moon, the whole sky too. If only Mattie had longer hair…”
Savino had heard such grandiose promises before, especially around Christmastime if Alfred had watched It’s A Wonderful Life recently. “How about we start with a decent cup of coffee?”
Alfred swung their hands back and forth in a giddy display. “That, I can definitely do.”

Flashback-- 2 months ago
You moved the gear into park and reached for your camera bag haphazardly thrown in the backseat. You were so excited to walk around the hidden coast as part of your solo travels. You looked around the area and noticed that it was indeed a secluded place, judging by the lack of people milling around. There were a couple of local restaurants attached into the residents’ houses. And a lone bus stop can be seen just along the edge of the parking bay.
It was late in the afternoon and it was the perfect time to capture some photos. You marveled at the pink sand and long stretch of beach. Nobody was swimming, and only a handful of people were scattered along the beach. A couple were laid on a blanket on one area, and a man was sitting atop some rocks with his headphones on. You walked farther ahead where you won’t disturb the other nature spectators and filmed a couple of videos and photos for your travel vlog. The peaceful vibe also stimulated your brain and it pushed you to record some prose on your phone. Nothing can spark creativity better than nature, and sadness, you suppose.
After the sun has set, your stomach began growling. You only ate brunch and you realized it was not good to be this hungry if you were planning to eat lots of seafood for dinner. You traced back your steps towards the local businesses and chose a quaint restaurant with a rustic theme. The locals were friendly and one of the residents hanging out even sat beside your table to chat with you. After a comfortable pause, while the aged woman let you eat your meal, you heard her think out loud, “Oh poor dear, there are no more buses that come at this hour. He must have missed his ride. The next bus will arrive tomorrow morning.”
You followed her gaze and you saw the man wearing headphones earlier sitting under the bus shed, checking his watch and looking back and forth the road. Suddenly, the friendly woman stood up, presumably to inform the man of his mishap.
You finished your meal and was paying for it when the old woman returned, the man with headphones in tow. He was very tall and he was wearing a cap and a mask. He looked awkward and a bit sheepish, he must have realized his mistake already. “Oh hey dear, thank goodness you are still here. You mentioned that you were going back to the city tonight, correct? Would you be so kind to give this man a ride on your way?” Then the woman ushered closer to you and stage-whispered, “It’s fine, he’s a jolly nice man, and I made sure he is not dangerous.” Then in a normal volume of voice, “He’s a tourist too and he had some miscommunications back at the station. But he is in dire need to get back tonight, you understand, don’t you sweetie?” She hugged you close and offered the both of you a sweet smile.
The man rubbed the back of his neck and he looked completely embarrassed. You were more than happy to offer your help but you can’t say you feel too confident riding with a stranger for a 5-hour drive back to the city.
“I’m really really sorry to impose, but I have an appointment early in the morning and I won’t be able to make it in time even if my… friend drives down here at this hour.” You noticed that his voice was deep and he kept his face lowered which did nothing to ease your worries of driving with a stranger.
“Oh sweetie, you need to loosen up a bit. Maybe show a bit of your face to gain this lady’s trust. No one wants to drive with a faceless man.”
The man hesitatingly removed his cap and mask, then you gasped softly. You looked around to make sure no one else was around, or no one else had seen. No way. Maybe he just looks like him. But then, why hide? “That’s fine, you can put the mask back on.” You forced a laugh then addressed the old woman, “Better to be safe, right? With the virus and all.” You cleared your throat, and the man looked a little bit hesitant and more wary of you as he put on his mask.
“We’ll get going now, ma’am. Thank you so much for a delightful chat. I hope to get back soon.” You gathered your things and led the man to your car. Before you opened your door, you faced him and asked, “Best to get this out of the way first. My name is Jane, and I am an allied health professional. I live in New South Wales, and here’s my identification.” You showed him your drivers’ license. “Now, are you perhaps, a celebrity?” You stared him down- well, up, since he’s  a lot taller. And your tone is reminiscent of a teacher scolding a child. But you just couldn’t help yourself. He must have felt the same way, because he answered with a small voice, “Yeah.” With his head still bowed down. You took a deep calming breath before continuing, “And you think it safe to travel in the suburbs of Australia, by yourself, without transportation??” You knew you sounded accusatory, considering you were talking to a stranger, but you just couldn’t believe how careless and thoughtless and dangerous the whole situation was. He squared up his shoulders a bit here and defended, “Well, I thought it was safe since it won’t be crowded in this particular locaion, and I did have a ticket back. I just…” he scratched his head and sighed.
A cold breeze fluttered your coat open, and you shivered. “Maybe, we should continue this inside.” He suggested, eyeing your shivering frame. You conceded, and both of you got comfortable inside your vehicle. You removed your coat, and he finally removed his cap and mask and ruffled his hair. You still couldn’t believe your eyes, but there was no mistaking it.
When you didn’t move, he looked at you and smiled, flashing his pretty dimples (curse him), and extended his hand, “Forgive me for forgetting my manners. Pleased to meet you, I’m Kim Namjoon.”
You gulped and shook his hand. You couldn’t say anything, so you just nodded and completed your pre-driving routine. You completely forgot that your phone automatically connects to your speakers and RM’s Seoul started playing. You froze and accidentally stepped on the brake. “Fuck.” You heard him snort and then laugh. “Sorry about that,” you muttered, referring to your embarrassing driving skills. Then he asked with dimples flashing, “So, you’re an Army huh?” You glared at him for a second then focused on driving.
“Well, the songs are good, can you blame me?” Then he chuckled and freakin rapped along. Your heart beat so fast because you couldn’t believe Kim Namjoon is rapping along Seoul while he is in the passenger seat of your car. Fucking surreal.
After a few minutes of silence, with just your playlist in the background, you told him, “You can sleep if you want, you did mention you still have a schedule in the morning.” You glanced at him and he was wearing an incredulous look. You paused, oh yeah. It would be more foolish to sleep in a stranger’s car. “Or not. Forgot about me being a stranger thing. And worse, a fan!” You chuckled. “No, it’s not that. I just don’t think it’s polite to sleep while you are driving for me. The least I could do is accompany you.” You smiled softly. You’re not even surprised he is that thoughtful. “Also,” he cleared his throat, “I don’t actually have a schedule. I just.. didn’t want my manager to scold me. I was about to call him using the phone in the restaurant, but the woman suddenly asked you to drive me. And well, I’d pick riding with a pretty girl than be scolded by the company any day.”
Your jaw dropped, and the man had the nerve to laugh. “Oh gosh, are you sure this isn’t a reality show, like- prank an army episode, oh god, y’all are not stalking me right?? How did you even know I was an army?? I was discreet!” And that just made him laugh harder.
“Relax. It’s definitely not a reality show. It is reality though.” A short pause, then, “Your music taste is so… varied.” And for some reason, that made you feel proud. Your playlist ranged from country music, to R&B, to anime OSTs, to Eminem, Barbra Streisand, and of course BTS.
After a couple hours of driving, your legs were feeling numb already. On your way to the coast, you had multiple rests since you were not in any hurry. But you were still a new driver and your legs are not accustomed to long drives. “Uhm, since you’re not chasing a schedule, is it okay if we stop over for a moment? My leg is killing me.” He instantly agreed, “Of course, Jane. Anything you need. Are there restaurants somewhere we can stop over? Do you want to eat? My treat!” You smiled. “Don’t be silly. You’re my guest and not everybody can do a favor for the Kim Namjoon so I’m treating you.  I need something to brag about to my grandkids.”
Silence. “Oh. You’re married?” You laughed at that. “I wish. But, nope.” You took a deep disappointed breath. “What’s with the reaction? You’re still young?” He asked.
You parked the car, and faced him, “Well, you know how we have these certain expectations in our lives? Not other people’s expectations for us or society’s standards- just, a vision of how our life should be like.” You didn’t know what made you share your deepest disappointments in life with this man, but you thought, It’s not like I’m ever gonna meet him again anyway. I might even get a helpful advice or two from THE Kim Namjoon. You faced forward then, and played with your fingers as you continued. “I feel like nothing I envisioned for my life, back when I was just a youthful dreamer, ever came true. I didn’t live up to the expectations of 12-year-old me. And it bothers me everyday. As I get older, time feels so much faster and missing chances get all the more scarier and riskier.” There was a short silence as you both digested the sudden serious conversation. You didn’t want to make him feel more awkward so you showed him a bright smile and unlocked the door. “That was what the reaction for.” Then you laughed as you exited your door.
You noticed him looking out his window, at the queue for the restaurants. You walked around his side of the door and knocked on his window. “Maybe it’s better for me to just buy our food and eat in the car?” He looked worried but grateful at the same time. “I think that would be the best. Sorry.” He really looked apologetic. But you completely understand. “It’s fine, honest. Be sure to lock the doors then, and keep the windows closed. Do you know how to start the car so you can turn on the heater?” He rolled his eyes and held out his hand for your keys. “Sucks that my reputation precedes me. But yeah, I can do that much.” You started to hand him the keys and bit your lip. You were honestly worried he will wreck your car. You sighed, “Please. Don’t break my car.” Before turning and walking away, chuckling at his offended face.
