"COVID still kills roughly as many Americans every week as died on 9/11. It is on track to kill at least 100,000 a year—triple the typical toll of the flu. Despite gross undercounting, more than 50,000 infections are being recorded every day. The CDC estimates that 19 million adults have long COVID. Things have undoubtedly improved since the peak of the crisis, but calling the pandemic 'over' is like calling a fight 'finished' because your opponent is punching you in the ribs instead of the face."

The U.S. is ending its COVID-19 vaccine requirements for international air travellers and Canadians at the border as of next week, officials announced on Monday.

By the end of the day on May 11, international air travellers, federal employees and federal contractors will no longer need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the White House said in a statement Monday

The statement added that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will also “start the process to end their vaccination requirements for ... certain noncitizens at the land border."

I find it hilarious, if morbidly so, that the United States has a plan for an invasion of Canada and a plan for a zombie apocalypse, but didn’t have one for the outbreak of a viral and deadly virus. For a country so prepared for most any inevitability, including literally aliens, and if the entire United States government is decapitated and all the designated nuclear bomb shelters are destroyed, we had no damn clue what to do during COVID-19. I imagine the cabinet meeting went something like “okay how do we fight this virus?” and some Secretary replied with “idk man but if all the bomb shelters are destroyed with nukes and society collapses the US government can function from a modified Boeing 747 for several months without landing.”

Martin Pengelly writing for The Guardian: Marjorie Taylor Greene says: “I’m not a doctor, but I have a PhD in recognising bullshit when I hear it.”

"On Capitol Hill on Thursday, Greene attended a hearing staged by the House oversight select subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic.

The expert Greene responded to, Dr Peter Marks, the director of biologics evaluation and research at the Food and Drug Administration, also described how at the height of the pandemic in the US, 'about 3,300 [people], about a World Trade Center disaster a day', were dying of Covid-19, contributing to a death toll of more than 1.1m."

Greene went on to spend her allotted time reiterating a slew of conspiracy theories and claims that "peer reviewed" studies had shown the exact opposite of what Dr. Marks had stated--that vaccines in fact caused multiple problems.

California Rep. Robert Garcia followed Greene with "I’m sorry you all had to go through that. That was a lot of conspiracy theories ...debunked by medical science. We should be clear that vaccines work and have saved lives...."

Dr. Marks also apologized to the public at large for having to have put up with the conspiracy theories and they damage they've caused: "...to the thousand or so parents of children under four years of age who have died of Covid-19, who were unvaccinated. Because there were deaths and there continue to be deaths among children, and that is the reason why they need to get vaccinated..."
