The Temeraire series is one of my all-time favorite dragon stories because Temeraire is so lovable. The dragons are intelligent, they’re emotional, they have humanity. Novik is also a master storyteller with her extensive background in our Napoleonic War landscape.

Once more thinking about something that permanently altered my brain's chemistry and the way I see life and I think I should share it here, even if no one is going to see. In the How to Train Your Dragon book series, there is a scene where Hiccup faces an enemy who owns an axe that has two sides, one that is golden and shiny, the other that is blackened, bloody and rusty. He would throw the axe in the air and make decisions depending on which side it would land on. Said axe eventually is used to decide Hiccup's fate. However, despite being trapped by the narrative in many ways, Hiccup is the protagonist of his own destiny. He reaches for the axe as it falls, and turns it himself so it lands on the golden side. Whether the axe was going to land on the gold or the dark side originally is irrelevant. He chooses to be alive and be free. Every time I go through a difficult moment, as I am right now, I think about this scene, as silly as it may be.

I am allowed to grab the destiny axe. And so are you.

Listen, I grew up loving a certain book too. But especially in this day and age, you have to put your money where your mouth is.

I haven't read the *other* book, but when you live overseas and feel like you can't do much to help the oppressed, the least you can do is be smart about who you're giving supporting, whether it be authors or artists, companies or celebrities.

2. Favorite fantasy book(s).

(Eeeeexcellent, I do love fantasy books. Though how I'm gonna narrow it to only a few I've got no idea. Okay. I'm going to remove the very obvious choices like Lord of the Rings (though it is one of my faves)).

Monstrous Regiment. I love the entire Discworld series (especially The Witches) but I've also got a huge soft spot in my heart for Terry Pratchett's take on 'a girl dresses like a boy to go to war' (and thinks of everything except some spare socks in- erm... the right place). Along with Polly, the squad consists of a vampire, a troll, an Igor, a religious fanatic and two very, very close "friends" (and yes, the official summary put the friends in quotes too). And everyone has their own secret.

I love basically everything about this book and I can't tell you guys any of it because it would spoil all the fun.

The Goblin Emperor. This one's a story filled with light. Maia the half goblin son of the elven Emperor was never supposed to take the throne (or to ever even be at court. because racism). And then everyone ahead of him dies in a single "accident" and suddenly he's the new Emperor. Maia is a good person, and a kind one, and despite everything that gets thrown at him he keeps hold of that understanding of right and wrong and refuses to bend.

(I have to mention that the language of the writing is kinda hard to get into in the beginning, and the characters's have very complicated and long names, but once you get into it it really did enhance the story for me).

Good Omens. An Angel and a Demon try to stop the apocalypse and instead lose the Antichrist. I've loved that book for like a decade now and if I don't put it on a list of my faves that list would be a lie.

The King of Attolia. Third in The Queen's Thief series and my favorite one out of all of them. I've always enjoyed Outsider POV in fics. And here is a book that just... proves why. We've got Eugenides and Irene, the Thief and the Queen, and we know them from the two previous books. And adore them. But the story isn't from their POV, it's from the POV of Costis, a Queen's guard who's suddenly gotten assigned to the King. The useless, weak, undeserving king that as far as Costis is concerned doesn't deserve to even kiss the Queen's boots. And it's hilarious to read the story from the eyes of someone who knows so much less than us. And so satisfying, as he begins to understand.

(I recommend the whole series and am personally glad to have read them in the published order but Megan Whalen Turner has stated that she wrote them in a way that allows you to jump in at any point you want).

The Raven Tower. The story is from the viewpoint of a sentient, omniscient rock whose name is Strength and Patience of the Hill and it is the GREATEST THING EVER. The gods are real and must be very careful with their words, because if they speak a lie the reality will alter to make that lie the truth but if the lie is bigger than the power of the god... well. Inspired by Hamlet.

(the book also has a trans man as the main character; the other main character? The sentient rock is the narrator but the largest part of the story focuses on Eolo).

A Natural History of Dragons. The first book from The Memoirs of Lady Trent (and honestly it would probably be more honest to say that every single book from this series fits the category of fave but I'm putting up the first here because this isn't a series where you should skip ahead). The book focuses on the life of Isabella as narrated by her older self. This is the story how a Scirland lady bucked all tradition and became a world renowned expert on the Natural History of Dragons.

(this series has a piece of my heart and always will).

A Natural History of Dragons, by Marie Brennan

The memoirs of Lady Trent narrate the life and research of Isabella Trent, world-renowned naturalist now an old woman, whose wit and humor are merciless towards imbeciles. In the first tome, Isabella, first as a young girl and then a young woman, challenges class and period conventions to satisfy her scientific curiosity and accompany her husband on an expedition in search for dragons in Vystrana...

I was scared that the memoirs format was going to be boring to read, but it was actually the best way to tell the life story of a woman who has lived so many adventures, I really liked it. The good thing about memoirs is that it allowed Isabella's personality to shine, especially her humor, and to have some hindsight on what happened. The teases about future events that she reveals later in the series really make you want to read what's next

Volume 1 introduces themes and ideas that I thought were fleshed out better later in the series, and what I considered as small flaws (a lot of things were repeated so many times I started thinking "yeah, okay, I get it") are way less prominent

As for Brennan's worldbuilding, it's deceptively simple at first glance (Victorian era but make it fantasy), but actually had so many details that make it extremely rich. Everything is inspired by countries/cultures from the real world, but Brennan mixed a lot of them and I thought it was really well executed. And the further along you get in the series, the more details sprinkled in the first 3 books come together to form the final picture. When I got to the end of book 4, I wanted to scream because of how delightful and well put together the reveals were

Les mémoires de lady Trent racontent la vie et les recherches d'Isabelle Trent, naturaliste mondialement connue et désormais vieille dame, dont l'esprit et le style empreints d'humour s'avèrent sans pitié pour les imbéciles. Dans le premier volume, Isabelle, petite fille puis jeune femme, brave les conventions de sa classe et de son temps pour satisfaire sa curiosité scientifique et accompagner son mari lors d'une expédition à la recherche des dragons de Vystranie...

J'avais peur que le format des mémoires soit un peu ennuyant à lire, mais en fait c'était la meilleure façon de raconter la vie d’une femme qui a vécu autant d’aventures, j’ai beaucoup apprécié. L'avantage des mémoires c'est que ça permettait au personnage d'Isabelle de nous dévoiler sa personnalité, notamment son humour, et d'avoir du recul sur certains évènements. Les références à des évènements qu'elle nous dévoile plus tard dans la série donnait vraiment envie de lire la suite

Le tome 1 introduit des thèmes et des idées que j’ai trouvées mieux développées dans les tomes suivants, et ce que je considérais comme de petits défauts (pas mal de choses sont répétées de nombreuses fois donc au bout d’un moment je me disais "oui, c’est bon, j’ai compris") sont beaucoup moins présents

En ce qui concerne le monde créé par Brennan, il paraît relativement simple au premier abord (époque victorienne mais version fantasy), mais en réalité, énormément de détails le rendent extrêmement riche. Tout est inspiré de pays/cultures du monde réel, mais mélange pas mal de trucs et j’ai trouvé que c’était très bien fait. Et au plus on avance dans la série, au plus les détails disséminés dans les ~3 premiers tomes s'emboîtent et le tableau final se précise. Quand je suis arrivée à la fin du tome 4 j'avais envie de hurler tellement les révélations étaient croustillantes et bien amenées

Book rec: How To Train Your Dragon

Yes, like the movies but also NO, not like the movies.

The movies are awesome, but I need you to understand first that the books are very different, equally awesome things. Hiccup is scrawny and a ginger. Toothless is tiny and green and talks. Gobber is built like a linebacker. Snotface Snotlout is a budding sociopath with a BFF named Dogsbreath the Duhbrain.

And they are such good books.

First and foremost, the writing is superlative. It's silly and wacky and sometimes gross and so visceral and engaging with alliteratives and tactile language. The plots are NOT formulaic and do NOT go where you expect, and there's a true element of danger with unexpected deaths and consequences. I am a grown person with a mature understanding of how plots and series work, and I knew there were thirteen books in the series and STILL in book four I was terrified that the heroes wouldn't be able to pull it all off after all and the series would somehow end right there.

Second, they're marvelously short. Yes, there are thirteen in the entire series, but they just fly by. (Ha. Dragon pun.)

Third, the audiobooks are narrated by David Tennant. I repeat, all thirteen books are narrated by David Tennant in a thick, natural Scottish brogue, and he sounds like he's having the time of his life. The voices are great starting in Book 1 (I love the bits where he sings) but for me the joy really kicks off in Book 3. The section with the song of the nanodragon leaves me in stitches every time.

And because these book recs are all meant to be specific to my sliver of the Batman community, the dad vibes are peak. PEAK, I say. Stoic the Vast fills the specific flavor of kids book dad where he doesn't listen and is a little silly and often wrong which causes friction with his son who is very different from him and therefore difficult for him to understand but mannnnnnnn, he loves that kid so much. He really does. What a good dadman who is trying to best. (Oh, another difference? Hiccup's mom is alive and part of the tribe from the start. Her name is Valhallarama. But this is still very much a Dad-And-Son series.)

I strongly strongly strongly recommend getting the audiobooks from your local library. Such a treat.

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen- If you haven't read this book, please do it now, it is amazing! It is about a Vietnamese American family telling stories to each other alongside the events of their lives.

10/10, one of my favorite books of the year!

Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill- This series is so sweet and the epitome of cottagecore fantasy! Filled with little dragons, found family, and beautiful pictures!

10/10, a feel good book of mine

Sleepless by Sarah Vaughn, Leila del Duca, Alissa Sallah- Has anyone done bodyguard romance this well? No, they have not. A lovely romance at the center and lots with court intrigue.

9/10, a swoonworthy romance fantasy!

Fangs by Sarah Anderson- Who hasn't wanted a romance between a vampire and a werewolf? Low stakes and adorable.

8/10, a super quick ad satisfying read

Trickster: Native American Tales, A Graphic Collection- A collection of short stories by various writers and artists about the many tricksters from the various cultures.

7.5/10 full of tricks and stories

The Old Guard by Greg Rucka- A little too gory for my taste, but as someone who loved the movie, I really enjoyed seeing the material it was adapted from!

7/10 action packed and emotional

The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag- An adorable sapphic romance with a selkie as the love interest!! Super lovely!

7/10 a darling love story

I cant stop thinking abt rinezha and it is killing me.

The petty hate of enemies/rivals, the bregruding allies, the cultivated intimacy of knowing each others weaknesses and short comings bc they’ve spent so long picking apart each others defences to hurt and bully one another, but it’s turned into a tentative respect and mutual understanding of each other and how they’ve gotten here. And they haven’t completely acted on it but there’s an assuredness in looking at each other and knowing how the other feels, in prolonged eye contact and all the words unsaid but felt so deeply, in lingering touches.

But they’re on opposite sides of a war and the gap between them that used to be minute with their petty squabbles has turned into a chasm, seemingly irreparable. And they have to hate each other to justify hurting the other, but there’s the lingering familiarity of loving one another and holding each other. The nostalgia for an easier time when they were both children playing at soldiers and students, not generals - exhausted and covered in blood. the yearning, but lingering anger that the other won’t change. If you tried to hurt me, I think I’d let you. I cant live without you (don’t ask me to). Dying in the others arms - the joint relief and grief of holding them again and losing them.

It’s a visceral pain in my gut thinking abt them. I’ve cried so much over them today, I started gagging

You can submit GIF sets or edits, but please ensure you are submitting from the blog that actually created them. Wanted to add that caution since there’s been a lot of people stealing/reposting GIFs and edits in particular recently. So just be cautious.

Try to avoid commentary in your ask that might make others feel bad (“the only person who knows how to write XXX correctly…”). It’s important to be able to appreciate creators without making others feel bad, so let’s try to keep the commentary complimentary without being off-putting for other creators.

My running notes from Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco:

I love snarky chaos characters so much. “Take it from someone who talks too much” *kills the guys while he’s monologuing* “you talk to much”

*mid battle* What’s the word for fucker in this language? *makes best attempt* is later corrected with the right word because what he says means cantaloupe. “Ah, I believe I am starting to understand your frustrations with my language”

Like Witcher if despite the witcher being badass, the vampires were even more badass. (Like even the “well fuck” is so Witcher 🤭)

Can’t say I love you. Just says fuck you instead.

Like, he’s a badass reaper and then the vampires are just all *you fragile, we protect you” and he resents them for it even if he secretly loves it.

Lady Song kicking ass again.

10/10 would recommend. Soft, queer, bloody gory romantasy. *chefs kiss*
