Hi! I was wondering if you'd be comfortable woth writing Steve Rogers x reader who's a seamstress/designer that wears mostly WW2 era clothing?
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader
Rating || Genres || Warnings: T+ Romance. Fluff. No warnings.
A/N: OMG! I love this ask! Like seriously thank you so much! Also I drew inspiration from Edna Mode from the Incredibles LOL. Also I hope everything I wrote makes sense. Its two in the morning and my fingers won't stop typing : P Anywho! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
People were surprised, to say the least, when you would present yourself as a designer. And not just any designer.
You were now in charge of updating, mending and designing uniforms for the Avengers.
Was it a real job title? Not really. But then since when had that stopped Tony Stark? He could update his armor on his own, and adjust it to his liking. The rest of his team, however, did not have the luxury. Bruce didn't need a uniform, while Thor had his own godly outfit. Natasha needed her uniform mended after a brutal fight. Not to mention she needed suits that would keep her warm in cold weather, and allow her skin to breath in the hot weather. Clint required a uniform that was sturdy yet easy to move in, since maneuvering was a big part of his gig. And Steve came back with more then a few rips in his uniform, on more then one occasion.
And with the growing roster of the Avengers, Tony had taken this particular step and hired you as the official designer/seamstress for the Avengers.
Every fabric imaginable was at your disposal. Not to mention the technology. You were working in your dream field, and was loving every second of it.
Plus it gave you time to work on your own projects as well.
And that was creating vintage clothing from the 40s and 50s.
Fashions from the years past had always fascinated you, and though you would love to wear the elegant gowns and other period pieces, the design and cuts of women's clothing from the 40s and 50s wouldn't get you stared at.
At least not much.
Besides, there was another more empowering reason you wore clothes from that era.
The first time you had met the Avengers, was after the Battle of New York. Tony had set you up, and you had met with each team member separately to talk about their new uniforms.
The day you met Steve, you had just finished speaking to Natasha and waved her goodbye. You were sitting on the tall stool by the bar within the Avengers Tower and going over your rough sketches and notes. As was the norm, you were wearing pants and a shirt styled after the 40s fashion, a rare occasion since you adored the skirts and dresses that came with those years. Sensing someone approach you, you looked up, red lips pulling into a bright smile as you saw the Captain approaching.
"Captain, hi." You quickly stood, heels clicking against the marble floor as you did. "I'm Y/n, 'your new designer." He stared at you for a few more seconds, before shaking himself out of whatever stupor he was in and approached you. "Its nice to meet you, Ma'am." You smiled at him. "Call me Y/N." You offered, before hoping onto your stool once more and pulling out an entirely new sketchbook from your bag. It already had a few sketches of the Captain's uniform in it, plus some detailed notes along the margins.
"So, what is it you'd like me to change about your suit?" You asked, smiling at him as you crossed one leg over the other, pencil poised on a new page to start taking notes.
It took a few minutes before Steve began to speak to you openly. He was detailed about what he did or didn't want, and you were precise with your questions as you took notes. Of course the color scheme would remain the same, but you offered to create one that was entirely black, for stealth missions, you explained. He agreed, thinking that perhaps blue and red would stick out like a sore thumb in the shadows.
As you were tracing the shoulder of the uniform from the side, filling in the details as you went along you glanced up at him.
"What about the symbol?" You asked. The Captain stared back at you, confused. "What symbol?"
"Well you have the star as your personal symbol, but now that you're a part of the team, shouldn't you wear an Avengers symbol somewhere?" You gestured to the shoulder you had outlined. "I was thinking perhaps an A right there." You suggested. He glanced at the drawing before looking back up at you. A small smiled pulled at his lips before he chuckled. "I hadn't even thought of that." He admitted. Suddenly his blue eyes lit up and he gestured out a hand.
"May I?" Nodding you quickly handed over the sketchbook and pencil, watching in fascination as he began to do a quick sketch of the symbol he wanted that would represent his alliance. With the way he created the strokes with each sweep of the pencil, precise and elegant, you couldn't help but make a guess.
"Do you draw Captain?" You asked, your eyes never leaving his hand as he began to add in the details such as outlining and shading. The man shrugged. "A little bit." You had a feeling he was being modest. You had worked with designers and had studied alongside future designers, you knew an artist when you saw one.
"What do you think?" He finally asked, sliding the sketchbook back towards you.
Your eyes scanned over what would be the official Avengers logo before grinning.
"Look perfect."
                                             -------------------------
It didn't take long for you and the Captain to be on first name basis. But then again it was the same with Natasha and Clint. While you mostly talked shop with the two assassins, with the Captain, now Steve, it was another story.
It was easy to talk to him, to go into depth when designing a new outfit for him. He was a super soldier, and regular clothing sizes didn't particularly make the cut sometimes. So it was the norm for you to be creating other clothes for him as well. He would come to you with an idea or even a rough sketch and you would make it a reality.
Then there were the mission outfits. Oh you loved those! Adding hidden seams and cuts into Natasha's dresses so she could hide her weapons. Helping Clint create a tuxedo that managed to hide several sharp arrows. Short ones of course, but still good enough to use with a crossbow.
Your work remained consistent and up to par, as did your dress sense. Not a day went by when you didn't wear something dapper whenever you went to work. You could always tell that there was a curious gleam in Steve's eyes whenever you two would interact, but you dismissed it. He probably thought you strange for your dressing style, but it didn't bother you. Tony had taken to joking about your style, but only in jest. He was just as impressed with your skills just as any other team member.
Of all the Avengers, Steve became a good friend. And you had secretly admitted to yourself that those blue eyes and smile did comes as a bonus. Not to mention he was in peak physical condition. If you had the guts you would ask him to model a few of your own personal pieces for you, but you would never come outright and say something like that.
At present you were putting the final touches on Clint's new uniform. He had decided that maybe he needed a little more dark purple and you had complied. Working with Kevlar was a pain though. It was hard to mesh the fabric together and create something that would fit with the man's physique perfectly.
You were getting tired, and your fingers were aching from the numerous pins and needles you had handled that day. Not to mention the constant cutting. Your hand was beginning to cramp and you had decided to call it a day.
Your workplace was stationed at one of the floors of the Avengers Tower and you could see the sun beginning to set. Sighing you kicked off your heels, stretching your toes and sitting back in your chair. You propped your feet up on another chair and leaned your head back. You had only just taken a deep breath when you heard the door slide open. Straightening up, you glanced in the general direction before relaxing.
"Oh Steve, its only you." You went back to your previous posture of relaxing. "Hurtful Y/N, that you think so little of me. I am a Captain after all." He feigned being hurt with a hand to his chest. To play along with his little joke, you instantly jumped to your feet, and stood at attention, saluting him as you did. The expression on your one was one of sheer concentration and attention, prompting the soldier to laugh out loud as he approached you.
"At ease, soldier." He patted you gently on the shoulder. You broke the salute to grin up at him. Your gaze flitted to the torn page he held. "New project for me? You do know how to spoil a girl Steve." You said with a teasing nudge to his shoulder as you took the page from him. He shrugged in response. "I just thought it'd be a fun little side project for you. You're always saying you love those." You hummed in agreement as your eyes scanned his rough sketching, already making calculations and measurements in your head.
"It'll take me a couple weeks to get to this though, I'm swamped." You gestured to the multiple projects she had laid out on rows and rows of tables. Steve quickly nodded. "Of course, work comes first." You sighed. "I wish I'd have extra time for my own projects as well, it took me two weeks to complete this." You gestured to the dress you were wearing.
Your outfit for the day was one of your own designs, and it was one of your best, in your opinion. You had paired it with shoes that matched the color of the scarf. For your hair you had gone quite simple, simply adjusting the waves and curls and allowing them to frame your features.
Steve did a once over of your dress. He was silent for a few seconds. "What?" You asked, frowning at the sudden silence. "Can I ask you something Y/N?" He said. Was he actually looking nervous about what he wanted to ask. You gave a nod, encouraging him to go on.
"Why do you dress like that?" He asked.
You blinked, tilting your head in confusion. "Like what?"
He shrugged before gesturing to your overall appearance. "Like you don't belong in this era."
"Oh! Oh my gosh! Steve! Is my wearing clothes from the 40s bothering you? I should've realized I am so sorry!" Your apologies were cut off when he shook his head. "No! No! Its not that." He seemed to be struggling to find the words.
"I mean that since I woke up I've only ever seen women dress in today's fashions. And I always thought dames would dress according to the latest fashion." God knows he had been aware of the fact. Bucky's sisters had always been obsessed with the latest trends. And he was sure that if they had seen you, they would've swooned over your outfits.
You gave a small sigh of relief. "Oh is that all? I thought maybe you didn't like the way I dressed." He shook his head. "I like how you dress, its like being back home. A little." There was no doubt there was a hint of sadness in his eyes this time when he spoke, and your heart went out to him. "Well I'm glad the way I dress has helped remind you of home." You said, giving him a small smile.
"And to be honest," You continued. "There is a bit of a sentimental reason why I dress like this." A quirk of an eyebrow on his part prompted you to go on so you did.
"My grandmother was a factory worker during World War II. When I was little she used to tell me how during those years women really started to come into their own. With the men gone, women stepped up and started to take charge of small businesses and working jobs that men had otherwise occupied previously. And because of this women had to wear practical clothing, like pants and shorter skirts. Sure there was also a fabric shortage, but it only helped women dress practically. Not to mention they had to cut their hair to keep it out of the way."
You glanced down at yourself, smoothing the front of your dress before looking back up at him and continued. "I dress like this because I love the style. It makes me feel pretty and I'm able to do my work efficiently." You paused. "But most of all, I wear them to remind me that women have come a long long way then simply being house-makers and small unknown business owners. And I honestly really just admire the way women took charge while their men were away." You grinned. "Talk about real empowerment."
By the time you finished talking there was a smile on Steve's face and a lingering sadness as well. You reached out to lay your hand on his arm. "Are you alright?" He nodded. "Yeah, just what you said, reminded me of a whole lot of women who I knew took charge on the battle front." He had met some brave soldiers during WWII, but he had also met some incredibly fearless women who were ready to charge the Nazis. Of course they weren't allowed to, so they tended to the wounded, drove them to hospitals, acted as liaisons and secretaries. Their roles were just as important as that of a soldier. And then there was Peggy.
Steve could see a glimmer of that fierceness in you that he had seen in Peggy. He had made his peace with the fact that she had lived her life. And now looking at you, a small thought took root in his mind. Maybe he could find someone to spend his life with as well?
"If you're done here." He gazed around the room, hands now stuffing in his pockets as his feet shuffled nervously where he stood. "You want to get something to eat?"
Alright, so hadn't been expecting that. A bright smile bloomed on your face and you gave Steve a little curtsy. "Such a gentleman. Let me just grab my bag."
He waited for your patiently by the door as you quickly pulled on your shoes and grabbed your handbag, tugging on your gloves as you went. "So where to?" You asked as you stepped up next to him. He grinned, offering you his arm which you gladly took, before answering.
"I know a really good 40s themed diner?"
"Sounds divine."

Twin Princes AU
LEGEND
Part one | Part two
Buy me a Ko-Fi!
AAAAND SCENE! Wow wow! I didn't expect for what was supposed to be another doodle comic...end up with me putting a lot of effort-!
Life got in the way plenty of times- making me take quite a bit to finish this...even contemplating on just putting this on hiatus and just do something else-
...but I did it! I didn't let any discouragement, nerves and bad feelings get to me.
Now I'm sure many are wondering- HOW did this come to fruition? Simple: my friend pointed out that my next comic should focus on Kyurem's involvement in this! Many were wondering what sort of role the old dragon played after the previous comic (Family) and the art piece that accompanied it (The Giant Chasm)! So I went for a more artistic approach to this, making the artwork look like a tale at first, but then shifting to a more crude and cold atmosphere- I was going to polish these last nine pages, yet my friend would tell me that the sketchiness helps with the narrative- and honestly, she was right! Thus I tried to add some subtle sketchiness on pages 7-11 on part one! I wonder if people noticed that detail...? Anyways, time for some fun behind the scenes stuff...!
Here's the very first concept of my Original Dragon design, including his human form!
Tumblr media
You can tell I did some adjustments in the final product, but I really wanted to make sure this dragon had characteristics of the tao trio in some way, plus-- I wished for him to have a unique sort of feel- kinda ethereal? I also gave a teeny bit of eastern dragon influence because...well...tao trio. The tail is actually inspired by a plasma engine!
Tumblr media
It's why I gave it a bit of a swirl to it- ...kinda reminds me of ice cream- His human design...well, I wished to make sure he looked like the princes yeah-? He is their dad after all! So I made sure to reflect that- Same with his clothing as well! Ah right...I should show the design of our princes yes...?
Tumblr media
WHOA WHOA WHOA-- those faces... Hmm... I wonder if people can start piecing together why this au is called the "Twin Princes AU" with this and what was told in this comic...? The design in itself was conceptualized by a rough idea my friend sent me a whiiiiiile back, but asked me to refine it further! Make it fancy, royal, elegant--!! You get the point. XD Though this is the finalized design i came up with as I brainstormed this comic! I hope I could convey how magical yet refined they are! As for Kyurem....oh my! What a reveal as well huh?
Tumblr media
What a throwback....! I drew these a while back!
Tumblr media
Well, there's certainly some familiar design choices...! And another clue to this whole puzzle- unless some of you have figured it out! Let me know through my ask box! ;D
I really didn't expect such a warm reception towards this au me and my pal cooked up last year. To think mixing concepts from our ocverse (GUARDiANverse) with pokemon could work so well...! I suppose fantastical elements mixing with another fantastical setting aint such a bad idea...! This AU has kinda expanded since it's conception... to a point of having other stories of other characters that take place in this version of the pokemon world!
Though for now, I may need a bit of a breather. 20 pages was QUITE the endeavor! Yet...that doesn't mean I wouldn't be opposed to tell more of my tale in other ways! Shoot me an ask, tell me! Who knows, I may answer with a doodle comic! For now, I'll just slowly cook my next idea! Maybe I should give the witness to these tales some spotlight...? I dunno...but honestly, feel free to shoot asks. Well, I hope you all can be patient with me in the meantime!

desserts
featuring our Inexpressible duo
Kamisato Ayato x reader | y/n | you
A  short story
Inspired by White Day Hyvs official art
[ He displays a decent smile but will engulf you all the same ]
-------------------------
It was late in the afternoon, you're just feeding the estate's only cat with some leftover fish from lunch today on its usual plate. The kitchen's window was wide open as fresh air would occasionally blow the pages of your notebook that was placed on top of the counter.
"Well, what do we have here?"
You raised your head away from glancing at the cat's fluffy ears in response to the sudden familiar voice.
"Welcome back" you greeted with a smile.
"I've been looking for you. I didn't expect to find you here" he slowly approached your side, displaying a gentle smile.
"Anything urgent?" You asked, finally standing up to take the seat near the counter.
"Oh nothing… I just want to share with you some of these desserts." He took the seat next to you and placed the box that was beautifully wrapped with neat decorations.
Ayato swiftly untied the ribbons and revealed the perfectly arranged desserts that are kept in small partitions. Each partition contains a small portion of desserts that is creatively shaped and decorated.
"How lovely…"
"Should you like the taste of it, you can take the few boxes I've bought for you."
You briefly glance over each of the pieces, trying to find the exact one that you'd want to eat first but the person beside you decides to randomly pick up a piece and offers it to you.
You reached out to take the piece from his fingers but he suddenly retreats back refusing to give it to you.
"No, not like that… Open up" he insisted on feeding you instead.
"Tsk… it's embarrassing" you mumbled as you looked away from his amused grin.
"Sweetheart, it'll melt." he cooed.
Eventually, you opened up your mouth and he carefully placed the small portion of desert into your mouth.
The dessert instantly melts inside your mouth as it gives a sweet flavor combination of chocolate and a hint of hazelnut.
"Taste good?"
You nodded agreeingly with a smile. "The sweetness is almost similar to one of my homeland's sweets. I wonder where they bought the ingredients?"
He intently listens to you with a gentle arc on his lips. You actually don't talk much on a daily basis but he finds it fascinating whenever you start talking about random things that interest you.
“I can request my attendant to get the ingredients for you if you want?”
“No need, I was just curious.” You proceeded to take another piece from the box and ate it with a small smile on your lips.
"Y/n…"
"Hmm?"
He suddenly points at you, then to himself without an explanation as if you could instantly understand him. You pointed out to the dessert, guessing that he'd want one but he only shook his head.
"What is it? Do you want me to cook something?"
He shook his head in slight disappointment as you sighed warily. Tired of guessing him, you casually picked up a piece of the dessert and brought it over towards him. Ayato looked at you with an unsatisfied frown but he eventually opened his mouth, letting you feed him the heart shaped chocolate.
The cat who was previously eating suddenly jumped onto your lap. Perhaps also became curious of the desserts that weren't meant to be eaten by cats.
"The Commissioner is almost always upset when he's with me. I gave him food and he's still unsatisfied unlike you". You looked at the cat as you gently stroked the cat's fluffy fur.
The moment you raised your head, the only person who was seated next to you suddenly stood up and drew closer towards you. You froze and he paused when his lips were almost touching yours.
It's a normal reaction to retreat back due to the sudden closeness however one of his hands has once more pulled you into the same position. His warm breath infused with the sweetness of chocolates slowly engulfing your ever so calm mind.
He didn't make any advances and you refused to move either as if locked in a space where time revolves around the both of you. The moment felt so slow as if it wasn't only a second that had passed by, it felt like an eternity to you.
Unthinkingly, you decided to press your lips against his. It was just a brief peck on his lips before you raised your head to look up at him, feeling curious if that’s what he actually wants from you. Upon receiving that he finally retreats while displaying a satisfied smile.
"That scared me, you idiot!" you mumbled a little bit too honest with your merciless thoughts.
"Cats are given the things they want without even saying a word. How come it's different for humans?" He completely disregards your harsh remarks.
"Cats only need food, water and shelter"
"Correct, but cats also require affection."
You just helplessly sighed feeling defeated with his logic but decided to stay silent afterwards. There is no point in arguing when he’s actually talking facts.
"Hmm… Looks like my sweetheart is displeased… Now, how should I make up for this?"

The white willow's branches swayed in a gentle breeze, leaves rustling as if thousands of little voices were whispering in the wind, and Mairon looked up from the sketchbook on his lap with mild irritation when a stray leaf landed between the pages. Its song would never compare to the soft crackling of fire, he thought, removing it with a flick of his wrist–a blasphemous thought to have, here in the middle of Lady Yavanna's pastures, yet none of his fellow Ainur were nearby, nor would he let them perceive his mind so easily.
Venturing out into the gardens was something Mairon did only rarely–and this particular willow he was sitting under reminded him why–but he had determined it was the best course of action. Lord Aulë had revealed to his most trusted Maiar that his wife was planning to organise a spring celebration and asked them to create jewellery and decorations for it, so Mairon had decided to gather some inspiration from Lady Yavanna's creations, thinking flower-shaped trinkets and floral patterns would surely please his peers.
Setting his pen aside after finishing another sketch, he flicked through the pages of his book to see if he had collected a sufficient amount. He had spent hours exploring the luscious greenery before finding the secluded spot under the willow and sitting down to refine his rough sketches; he had studied all sorts of flowers, the daisies on the meadow around him, the roses winding around graceful arches, the azalea shrubs growing alongside meandering pathways through the gardens, violets, poppies, chrysanthemums, sunflowers, tulips, snowdrops, forget-me-nots, lilies, crocuses... he had even fished a lotus flower out of a small pond to get a better look at its petal structure.
His sketches would certainly yield acceptable results, Mairon mused, at least no one could claim a lack of dedication. None of Yavanna's designs were of particular interest to him personally, but nevertheless he aimed to please. Perhaps he should craft a couple of necklaces, bracelets and anklets as well for those who enjoyed dancing, gifts for his lord and his lady respectively, maybe even a lovely ring for his own collection–
Mairon froze when he suddenly sensed another Ainu in his proximity. It took a moment until he realised who was approaching him, the sensation of his presence growing in magnitude and splendour as he drew near.
Melkor? Here and now?
He looked over his shoulder to see the tall figure of the Dark Vala emerging from the willow's shadow, eyeing him with unabashed curiosity and mirth.
"My lord," Mairon greeted hastily and gave a respectful nod. It wasn't the first time he had come across He who arises in Might, and he had–admittedly–grown fond of receiving his attention, yet to say he was at ease during such encounters wouldn't be true. His fána always prickled with a mixture of excitement and fear that they would be discovered at any moment.
"Mairon."
Melkor stepped away from the willow and walked through Yavanna's domain with utmost confidence and a certain carelessness, stepping on a couple of flowers as he went; her creations appeared to be beneath his concern, and deep down Mairon admired these subtle displays of power. The Vala was wearing long, flowing black robes, plain yet elegant, and a couple of colourful gems in his hair. It appeared as though he had attempted to brush it, only for his unruly strands to sway, shift and coil as they pleased, making the Maia wonder if it had a will of its own.
For a moment Melkor stood next to him in silence, looking at him with a hint of uncertainty, then asked, "May I?"
"Of course."
Mairon smiled when he sat down next to him and immediately glanced at his sketchbook with barely concealed curiosity. Never before had a Vala behaved like this in front of him; it was refreshing, in a strange way.
"I was not aware you enjoy drawing flowers," Melkor said, pointing at his sketches.
"I don't."
It felt good to speak freely, Mairon noticed. In front of Lord Aulë or his fellow Maiar he always had to pretend he loved whatever Lady Yavanna made, like everyone else did. Melkor, as he had quickly learned, was the only one who cared to hear his honest opinions and wouldn't scold him for voicing them.
"Another commission then?"
"Indeed. Lady Yavanna is planning a spring celebration."
It was only after he had already said these words that Mairon realised he had revealed something that he should probably have kept to himself. Had he just betrayed Aulë's trust? Or had he perhaps done so already when he had spoken to Melkor for the first time, on that fateful, lonely evening some time ago?
"You don't want to make any of these trinkets you sketched, do you?" The Vala's voice interrupted his thoughts.
Mairon nodded wordlessly.
"Understandably so. It is truly a crime that your lord would have you craft meaningless little things for his wife and her servants when you could achieve so much more with your potential..."
"Ah."
A self-satisfied smirk appeared on his lips as Mairon closed his sketchbook and set it aside, then turned towards Melkor and crossed his arms.
"Of course. Another ploy to win me over, is it not? Yet it is so painfully obvious. You will have to try harder than that, my lord."
Melkor chuckled in response, a twinkle of amusement lighting up his eyes.
"Truly, you cannot be deceived as easily as others of our kin," he mused. "Though..."
His expression became a little sheepish, and he averted his gaze in an attempt to conceal his sudden shift in demeanour.
"I will have you know, there is another reason why I continue to seek you out."
"Another?" Mairon asked, raising an eyebrow. He had no intention of being satisfied with such a vague statement. "Tell me then."
"Demanding, are you not?"
Melkor had resorted to fidgeting with a gem he had plucked out of his hair, watching intently as if he was fascinated by his own movements. It appeared as though he was fighting with himself.
"I wanted to see you again," he finally admitted.
Mairon was taken aback by such a candid answer from the Vala many had called a liar, and was silent for a moment, causing Melkor to glance up at him through the dark strands of his hair, falling in front of his face like a curtain of night.
"Does that bother you?"
"No, my lord. It is just... I would have never assumed... why would you feel inclined to..."
Melkor sat up straight and shook his hair out of his face, nearly sending a few diamonds flying.
"Because I want to," he said. Noticing Mairon's confusion, he added, "And no, I am not... particularly interested in what others think I should and should not do. As a Vala or otherwise."
Mairon remained quiet, thoughts racing as he tried to decipher the exact implications of such a statement. He who arises in Might wanted to see him. It felt almost blasphemous that the mightiest of the Valar and brother of the Elder King himself would think so highly of a humble forge Maia. Was it inappropriate of him to stay and listen to such flattery? Should he be worried? Should he leave? Perhaps he should, Aulë would certainly want him to, yet there was something in the eyes of the Vala in front of him that bade him stay and listen.
Sensing his uncertainty, Melkor produced something from the depths of his robe and presented it to Mairon. It was a red apple, like the ones growing on Yavanna's beloved trees, though more vibrant in colour.
"Here. For you, little flame."
The endearment and the gift caused the Maia to blush and he hurried to accept the apple. Melkor's fingers brushed against his as he took it from his hands, and he sensed it wasn't by accident.
"I–thank you, my lord," he said, chastising himself for forgetting his manners for a moment.
"I hope it will be to your liking."
Melkor's smile broadened and his eyes gleamed, a mesmerising display of pride and joy.
"For you see, I made this one myself."
"I wasn't aware you grow trees. They say you hate the kelvar and olvar," Mairon said, eyeing the apple and weighing it in his hands.
"I hate what Yavanna makes of them," Melkor corrected him. "Yet fortunately it is well within my power to make of their creations what I will."
The power to shape, to design, to improve... Mairon thought, excitement rising within him. Truly, it was a wonderful gift; not merely the apple itself, but also the things it represented.
"Will you not have a bite?" Melkor asked. "These apples taste sweet–though if you prefer the sour ones, I can bring you another next time we meet."
Mairon looked up from the apple he had been studying, eyes shining with admiration.
"I know not whether to eat it or encase it in gold so I may keep it forever."
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
The Valar have grown vigilant.
Low rumbles echoed through the mountainous caverns and labyrinthine hallways of Utumno in a steady rhythm, as if the heart of Arda itself was beating right underneath it. Flames crackled and coiled inside fireplaces, braziers and forging furnaces, and lava flowed within small rivers and basins with a sluggish bubbling sound. At times a stray gust of wind could be heard from the upper levels of the fortress, reminding its residents of the icy storm raging on the surface outside.
Claw-like nails tapped on an obsidian tabletop inside the dark lord's study as Melkor sat in silence, looking down at his hands with a scowl on his face, deep in thought. To his chagrin, he hadn't seen Mairon in a while, all thanks to his Valarin brethren's efforts. Manwë kept his watchful gaze upon his fellow Ainur after a couple of Maiar had vanished without a trace, Varda was probably aiding him with her hearing, Oromë and Tulkas were frequently seen prowling the lands around Almaren and the Fëanturi–well, Melkor couldn't tell if they had been tasked with watching over the realm as well, but he knew their spiritual senses were sharp and neither of them would be easily fooled, not even by the most elaborate of illusion spells.
Curse them, all of them.
His nails dug into the table he was sitting at, leaving thin furrows on its surface as not even the stone could quite withstand the fury of a Vala.
How dare they keep my little flame away from me? Surely Aulë must know this one is not truly his. Those of fiery nature are mine by right, they feel drawn to me... and does not Yavanna herself agree with that?
If Melkor's sources were correct, she did indeed. He had been told by spies within the couple's household that the Queen of the Earth mistrusted fire spirits after most of them had been revealed as servants of the Dark Vala and had little love for Mairon, her husband's brightest and most talented pupil. Another thing that made Melkor's blood boil.
How is it that she and her spineless husband were gifted with one of Eru's most beautiful creations, only to disregard and shun such an admirable spirit? Such talent, such potential... it cannot be contained by their petty rules and customs.
He had an inkling that his brethren's watchfulness would decrease eventually, yet for now there was nothing that could be done. Naturally he could always attempt to sneak into Almaren, but as soon as he was discovered Tulkas would be after him again. And Mairon would be in danger as well if they were seen together. No, he couldn't risk it, not right now at least.
And still, his need to see and speak to him again grew with every passing day.
The tapping stopped and Melkor's brow furrowed as an idea came to mind. There was a way to contact him without having to be present in either fána or fëa. Had his obnoxious brother not attempted such a thing himself, using a thin–and very flammable, as he had quickly discovered–material called parchment to write down his poetry for the coming of the Children? Melkor had found a couple of scrolls before and burned them after reading, simply out of spite; even though he knew Manwë would surely remember what was written there and could replace it. As asinine as such a work had seemed to him back then, it could now prove to be useful after all.
Reaching out with his fëa, Melkor ordered one of his servants to bring him some parchment, ink and a quill; how and where these tools were acquired was none of his concern. He continued brooding in silence while he waited, drawing random patterns on the table with his index finger. As the mightiest of the Valar he knew many things and little in this world was beyond his power, yet it now occurred to him that he had no idea how to compose such a piece of writing. A letter. A love letter, as Manwë and Irmo would call it.
Melkor was fairly certain he could imitate the small symbols his brother had used to write down his poetry, but he didn't know if those were used among Aulë's folk; and if they were, others might catch a glimpse of what was meant for the eyes of Mairon only. Nor could he think of any way to voice what he felt about his little flame, at least not in a coherent or poetic manner as would be expected of him. After all, he was an Ainu, not one of Manwë's petty servants–
Icy blue eyes lit up in the darkness, an idea forming in his mind. Yes, he was an Ainu indeed, and this was how he would express his adoration to the Admirable One.
By the time his servant returned to hastily deliver the desired items to the Dark Vala, Melkor was humming to himself, a melody beginning to form in his heart, ready to flow from his fingertips and onto the parchment in rivers of pitch-black ink.
And he wove a song of fire,
Of heat and flame and raw desire,
Of beauty, light and unbound passion,
Creation, destruction and refashion.
A song of golden eyes and fiery hair,
Of an alluring voice and features fair,
Of a mind and hands meant to create,
Of admiring a spirit made to be great.
At first it was difficult for Melkor to write down the music he heard in his mind, drawing every line and every note with careful consideration, yet after a while he became used to it and the melodies slowly but steadily took shape in front of him. Once the entirety of the parchment was filled, he leaned back and beheld his work, and he was content with what he had achieved. Hopefully Mairon would understand the meaning of such a gift, though he had faith that the Maia would.
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Bubbling, gurgling streams of lava wound their way across the plain of jagged obsidian and down the steep cliffs, meeting the icy waters of the ocean below with a sharp hiss. Clouds of steam wafted through the area like ghostly, ethereal fog, alight with the sunset's fiery glow. Charred remnants of dead trees endured between rivers of flame, holding on to the rock they stood on like phantoms of what had once been, a reminder of a past that would soon be forgotten.
Mairon was wandering alongside the edge of the plain, beholding its ruin. Yet he wasn't afraid as he perhaps should be; he was watching the scenery with fascination and awe. It was the first time he had seen the pure, unrestrained might of his element, the destruction it could bring, and it was as if something inside him had been freed, a part of himself that he had been forced to hide and lock away until now.
It was only a dream, he knew; if any of it was real, he wouldn't be allowed to walk here in peace as he did now. He would be told to go back to his forge and remain there like a good little Maia while his lord and lady fixed everything. And still, it felt so incredibly real, like he was awake and present to enjoy all of these new, strange, wonderful sensations.
Mairon stopped walking when he came upon a tall rock and raised his eyes to see a lonely tree on top of it. Yet unlike its unfortunate brethren, this tree seemed strangely intact–its trunk and branches were black, making it seem as though it too had been burned, but it was covered in white and pink blossoms, reminiscent of a cherry tree in spring. The wind carried its petals towards him as if something was beckoning him closer, and Mairon followed the silent call.
Sitting under the tree was Melkor, his back resting against its trunk like he meant to take a nap. He was wearing a short dressing gown made out of black silk, his bare legs and feet outstretched in a display of calm nonchalance, unharmed by heat and sharp rocks. His hair was adorned with the tree's petals and blossoms instead of gems, though Mairon couldn't tell if it was on purpose or if they had simply fallen on top of him.
Melkor raised his head upon sensing his presence, his gaze alight with withering heat and piercing cold at the same time, a paradox woven into a strange kind of harmony within his being.
"There you are, my beautiful," he said, and a content smile warmed his mien. "I was hoping you would find your way here."
"You came into my dream," Mairon blurted out before he could stop himself, then thought about it for another moment. "Or am I in yours?"
"Perhaps. One, the other, or a bit of both."
The matter didn't seem to concern the Vala, he noticed.
Melkor patted the rocky ground next to him. "Will you not sit with me?"
"Gladly, my lord."
The two Ainur were silent for a while, observing the leisurely flow of lava and rising clouds of steam, until Mairon couldn't contain his curiosity any longer.
"Is this one of your works?" he asked, curious to learn more about this place–even if it was nothing more than a dream.
"You could say that, yes."
Melkor turned his head to look at him.
"Do you like it?" When it took the Maia a moment to answer, he added, "You know you can be honest with me."
"I love it," Mairon said, a simple, candid statement. It was relieving to voice what he felt, even though he didn't quite understand why.
"You do? Interesting. I thought you would not exactly appreciate the mess I made," Melkor chuckled, plucking a stray petal out of the air to play with it.
Mairon contemplated his words before he answered. It was true that he was a being of order, and yet there was a beauty contained within the Dark Vala's work that spoke to him. Awoke something within him. Beckoned him.
"You know, I was always told that my element could bring nothing but destruction and ruin. Yavanna will not permit me to clothe myself in shapes of flame or let me practise how to make use of all my gifts. I am only allowed to care for the fires in my lord's forge. Yet now, you showed me what they never wanted me to see."
He motioned towards the dead trees.
"She was right and wrong at the same time. Indeed, her fragile creations cannot withstand the true power of fire, and what has once been here is no more; but it may be made anew. For that is the reason why you burned down this plain, is it not? If death and ruin was all you wanted, you would have destroyed this tree as well."
To emphasise his point, he tapped on one of the blossoming tree's unearthed roots.
There was a surge of warmth emitting from the Vala's fána and his expression was softer than Mairon had ever seen it before, glowing with pride, appreciation and–perhaps love, if he dared to hope that he could evoke such a reaction within the mightiest dweller of Arda. Melkor reached out to catch another blossom in his hand and leaned closer to Mairon, gently caressing his hair before placing it between his locks.
"I cannot recall ever meeting another Ainu who understands me so well," he said, and for once his mighty voice sounded quiet and vulnerable. "Many times have I asked myself if I was alone, yet now I was finally able to share something of mine with a kindred spirit who does not tell me that all of my works are abhorrent. I thank you, my precious... my love."
"Your–your love?" Mairon echoed, eyelids fluttering as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing and expected to wake up at any moment.
Melkor leaned closer to him, their faces mere inches apart, and Mairon felt his cool breath ghost over his skin like a gentle breeze on a starry night.
"If you wish it as well, then yes."
He didn't need to think before he answered.
"Yes, I want it. All of it."
Guided by instinct, he tilted his head to the side ever so slightly and closed his eyes when Melkor raised his hand to cup his cheek.
"All of it?" he asked, his thumb caressing the Maia's skin.
"I want to see what else you have created, I want to hear you sing the song you made for me... and I want to be your love if you will have me," Mairon whispered.
His entire fána tingled when he heard Melkor chuckling softly; he was close, so close.
"I do."
And he kissed him underneath the burning sky, petals falling upon them both.
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Valar or not, they shall not keep me away from him.
Melkor was walking the vast meadows around Almaren without taking shape, keeping his ëala hidden from prying eyes as best as he could. The lake around the island was glittering in the light of Illuin and Ormal, its surface still and smooth like silk, and the scent of flowers was everywhere, no matter where he went to escape it. There was faint singing in the distance, probably Maiar of Yavanna, Vána or Nessa who were practising for the spring celebration Mairon had told him about.
Manwë's perfect little world. If Melkor had been wearing a fána, he would have turned up his nose and scowled. Pretty, symmetrical, uninspired, boring. And this was what they all wanted when there was so much more potential in the world? He shook his head and tried not to dwell on these thoughts for now, lest they ruined his mood or tempt him to find another mountain, valley, forest, lake or river to destroy.
No, he was here to catch a glimpse of his little flame, hoping that Yavanna had sufficiently distracted their fellow Ainur with her vapid plans; though if he was honest with himself, a mere glimpse wouldn't suffice. Ever since Melkor had successfully managed to make his way into Mairon's dream and shape the scenery they had enjoyed together, he was restless, feeling an increasing need to be close to him.
Knowing that he had not only caught the Maia's attention, but also found a kindred spirit in him made his desire burn hotter than it ever had before. No longer was it about acquiring a servant; it hadn't been for a while now, if he was honest with himself. Instead he was pursuing something he had once thought could only ever be a dream, something he had assumed Eru would forever deny him. A strange feeling he had never quite understood, though he knew it had always been slumbering within his fëa like embers in a fireplace, flaring up whenever something–or someone–ignited his passion. Melkor wished he could be around Mairon whenever he wanted, in the shadows of his forge, the fires in the oven, the metal in his hands.
Yet for now he hid himself, hoping that his little flame might venture outside of Almaren so he could find him. He rested in the crowns of Yavanna's trees where leaves and branches would obscure whatever shadows his presence cast and surveyed the island and its surroundings with his sharp gaze. Maiar in various shapes were wandering around, tending to whatever tasks they were assigned, singing their songs and conversing with each other, birds and insects were fluttering around and other kelvar flitting through the thicket.
Melkor waited until the light of the Lamps grew dim, his patience quickly wearing thin. He hadn't caught a glimpse of Mairon so far, not even a lock of fiery hair, and he began to sense that his precious wouldn't appear any time soon; in all likelihood, he was toiling away in Aulë's forge all day long. Perhaps it was prudent to return to Utumno and try again another day, yet the Dark Vala was loath to accept such an outcome. If he wished to see the one he held dear he would, and none of his brethren had any right to keep them apart.
And so Melkor snuck inside Almaren as a formless shade, staying in the shadows to conceal the presence of his ëala. Most of the Ainur had returned to their dwelling places to rest for the night, and he reached Aulë's halls without anyone noticing that the Dark Vala was walking among them in secret. On his way to the entrance, however, he passed a cherry tree in full bloom, similar to the one he had imagined in his dream, and it came into his heart to bring another gift for his beloved to prove that their shared moment had indeed been real. Swiftly, Melkor broke off a couple of twigs that he deemed worthy and wove one around the others to fashion a bouquet of flowers, carrying it with him into Aulë's forges.
The fires were dim, most of them reduced to smouldering embers after the Maiar tending them had returned to their chambers. Yet the rhythmic clanging of metal revealed that one of them remained, still immersed in his work, and Melkor felt his spirit lighting up as he sensed the presence of the one he was looking for. He found Mairon in his usual corner, hammering something in shape on his anvil. His brow was furrowed in deep concentration, a few stray curls that had escaped his braid danced around his face as he moved and his fána shimmered like molten gold in the firelight, sweat glistening on his skin.
"There you are, my precious," Melkor called out to him before taking shape, hiding his gift behind his back to avoid spoiling the surprise.
Mairon nearly dropped his hammer in surprise, then abandoned his work and approached the Vala with hesitant steps.
"I... did not expect to see you today, my lord," he said, and it was obvious that he wasn't sure how to act or what to say, a soft blush appearing on his cheeks.
Melkor smiled. It appeared as though Mairon remembered their shared dream just as well as he did.
"I have a gift for you," he said, his voice resembling the low purr of a large, feline creature, and presented the cherry blossoms to his beloved.
Mairon's eyes widened, and he knew he understood.
"So it was..."
"It was indeed."
Melkor watched as Mairon gingerly took the bouquet from his hand and held it close to his chest, a tiny, shy smile lighting up his features.
"Thank you, my lord."
He is beautiful like this. I wish to see him smile more often.
The Dark Vala regarded him for a moment.
"You may use my name if you wish. I will not ask you to use such titles when I would rather have your love than your servitude."
Mairon contemplated his words before nodding slowly.
"In that case... thank you, Melkor. And–"
His ears twitched suddenly as if he had heard something far off and his fána tensed.
"Aulë calls for me," he whispered, and Melkor was pleased to notice that he hadn't referred to the other Vala as his lord.
"I must..."
His entire demeanour expressed reluctance, betraying his wish to stay with the Mighty One for a while longer. Melkor couldn't deny that the feeling was very much mutual, though he concealed any signs of displeasure, not wanting to upset the Maia any further. This part he would gladly leave to Aulë.
"I know," he said simply and reached out to let his fingertips brush over the back of his hand and his forearm. "But worry not. I shall keep coming back to see you."
Mairon's expression briefly softened with relief. He held the blossoms with both hands, nimble fingers clutching them protectively as if they were a promise he would hold on to during Melkor's absence. Yet suddenly something appeared to make him nervous again, muscles twitching and knuckles white, and he froze in the middle of turning around to look at the Vala.
"Melkor, I..."
Words appeared to elude him and he bit his bottom lip, cheeks flushing bright red like the embers in the fireplace behind him.
"Yes, little flame?"
A brief moment of silence ensued, molten gold eyes meeting frosty blue.
"I... never mind, I will tell you another time," Mairon said and turned on his heels with one final glance over his shoulder, leaving his secret lover alone in the slowly darkening forge.
Melkor shook his head in amusement. Adorable.
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Laughter and song filled the air as the Maiar of Almaren danced underneath Yavanna's trees, celebrating the bloom of her creations. They were eating, drinking and merrily braiding flowers in each other's hair, excited to explore the delights of their own fánar and the substances of Arda. Many exchanged gifts, flowers, fruits, jewellery and other trinkets, while some were spending time together in pairs to nurture bonds of love and friendship.
The light of the Two Lamps filtered through the leaves, rays of gold and silver bathing the gardens in an almost ethereal glow, and petals were floating in the air, a gift from Vána to her sister. Birds of all shapes and sizes were chirping in the crowns of trees, happily joining the Maiar's songs.
After delivering all the gifts he had made, Mairon had been keeping to himself and was currently bathing in the warm light of the Lamps. Long, flowing crimson robes covered his fána, decorated with golden embroidery and tiny jewels he had cut, polished and sewn onto it himself, daisies, red and white roses and daffodils were braided into his hair, as jewellery adorned his limbs, a golden shimmer surrounding him as if he himself was a work of art.
A tiny smile graced Mairon's lips when he watched how the jewels sparkled in Illuin and Ormal's light. Many of them had been gifts from Melkor, and he had used them for his works in secret, afraid of being scolded by Aulë if their origins were ever discovered, yet refusing to hide them; it would be an insult to their beauty as well as the Dark Vala's efforts to acquire them for him. And no one had noticed so far, never asking where he found the jewels he so diligently sewed on his clothes and set in his jewellery, never questioning the cherry blossoms he had preserved in his room.
There was one final gift left in his pocket, one Mairon had kept hidden from his lord and his peers. It was a golden bracelet in the shape of a snake, designed to look like it was twining around the wearer's arm, and he intended to give it to Melkor so he could finally return the favour and show his affection in kind.
A bird flew over his head and Mairon's thoughts were interrupted when a soft, round object landed in his lap. Confused, he picked it up and quickly determined that it was an apple, though this one was neither red, nor green, but golden like the rings on his fingers.
He knew instantly what it meant, and his heart skipped a beat.
It took all of his self-control not to jump to his feet and hurry into the woods to seek out his beloved immediately. Mairon rose as calmly and with as much dignity as he could and headed towards the nearby forest as if he was merely taking a stroll, yet once his form disappeared from view, he picked up the skirt of his robe and hurried deeper into the shadows.
It didn't take long until he sensed Melkor's presence, the Vala's fëa suddenly reaching for his as if he had appeared out of nowhere, and he saw him stepping out from behind a willow's long branches, reminiscent of their encounter in Yavanna’s garden.
"There you are, my beautiful little flame," Melkor greeted him. There it was again, the unusually warm and soft tone of voice, the one Mairon had only heard him use when they were alone together.
"Melkor," he whispered, his joy of seeing him and fear of being discovered fighting within him once again. "You came."
"I thought this celebration of theirs should keep Aulë and Yavanna occupied for a while."
Melkor closed the distance between them.
"And I would like to ask the fairest and most admirable of the Maiar for a dance, if I may."
Mairon averted his gaze and shifted on his feet, a nervous blush appearing on his cheek. He still wasn't quite used to being courted so openly.
"You may, and I would... very much like to dance with you."
His fingers intertwined nervously as he folded his hands in front of himself before adding, "In fact, I had no intentions of entertaining any other partners today. I was waiting for you."
The smile on Melkor's face brightened, and it seemed as though the fire of his eyes alone  could outshine the inky darkness of his long black hair at this moment.
"This pleases me greatly, I will admit. I would prefer to have you all to myself while I hold you in my arms and adore you as you deserve to be adored, my precious."
Melkor was voicing his wants and desires so directly, so passionately, so shamelessly. It was sending waves of heat through Mairon's fána, and he expected to feel strong arms wrapping around him and pulling him close at any moment–yet the Vala remained still, looking at him as if he was waiting for permission to act on his words.
And it was in this moment that any remaining fear and suspicion forever departed from the Maia's heart, for he knew Melkor had surely seen the same desires mirrored within his fëa, yet he held back to let him choose freely, like he had promised he would. He wouldn't ask of him what he wasn't ready or willing to give, and Mairon felt his love for him grow and blossom like a flower made of fire, kindled by the raw sincerity of Melkor's passion.
"I am all yours," he whispered breathlessly, and he meant more than just their dance.
Melkor reached out to place one hand on his hip, the other wandering up to cup his cheek.
"Shall we then?"
"Wait."
Mairon reached into his pocket.
"I have a gift for you. To thank you for all you have given me."
"Little things really, though I am glad to see they pleased you."
Melkor's gaze wandered over his robes and jewellery, recognition flashing in his eyes as he spotted the gems he had given him, then rested on the bracelet presented to him.
"You... you made something for me?"
The genuine surprise and awe in his expression made Mairon giggle.
"Of course I did. Would you like to wear it?"
Melkor held out his hand in response, gleefully watching as the golden snake slipped over his wrist and wrapped around his forearm like a lover holding on to him.
"I have never received a gift before," he admitted after a moment of silence. "At least none I liked so much. Thank you, little flame."
He moved his arm around to admire it from all angles. A perfect fit.
"One day I shall give you greater things, everything your heart desires. Your own forge, your own dwelling, even your own kingdom if you wish."
Mairon smiled, delighted by the Vala's reaction and the promises he made. Something told him that, despite the excessive grandeur of such claims, he would indeed receive these boons, and the thought pleased him.
"Shall we dance then, beloved?" he asked, feeling emboldened by his successful gift, and offered his hand.
"Of course."
And the two Ainur spent hours dancing in the shadows of the trees, rays of light illuminating their fánar every once in a while. The singing of their peers was a mere whisper in the distance, and they moved to the rhythm of their own music, a nigh silent melody created by their fëar reaching out and brushing against each other in search of unity, causing the air around them to thrum with their shared song. To Mairon, it seemed as though the Ainulindalë paled in comparison, as it had never achieved such harmony like they did in this moment, and he felt like the potential contained within their minds and imagination was limitless, a sensation that sent waves of euphoria through his entire being.
"I may not think too highly of flowers, but I must admit you look lovely like this," Melkor whispered in his ear, twirling the Maia around.
In lieu of an answer, Mairon swiftly plucked a red rose from his braid and put it in the Vala's hair with a small laugh.
"There. Now I can return the favour and tell you how pretty you are as well."
Yet before he could, Melkor wrapped both arms around him, and their music reached a magnificent crescendo when their lips met in a tender embrace of ice and fire, searching, exploring, caressing until the world around them blurred and it felt as if they became one for a few blissful moments.
"And while you are at it–why not tell me what you wanted to say last time we met?" Melkor teased once they parted.
"The way you ask for it reveals that you already know... my love," Mairon replied, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he was pulled into another breathless kiss.
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⊱⊰⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Pale blue eyes shone in the darkness, like flames captured within shards of ice, searching, roaming, admiring the sight in front of him.
A soft golden glow emanated from the Maia as the shadows of his new master's bedchamber appeared to draw him into a loving embrace. He was resting on the huge, luxurious bed like a gem placed on top of a silk pillow for display, and his robes were pooling around him, undone by his own hands, revealing his bare fána underneath. His toes curled, and he trembled with excitement and anticipation as he felt the Vala's gaze upon him, felt the intensity of his desire heating up the air around them and weaving itself into the song of their fëar.
"You are beautiful, my love," Melkor purred and moved closer until he knelt by his feet, reaching out to caress his naked leg with the tips of his fingers.
"Perfect as if you were made for me..."
"Yours," Mairon whispered, letting his legs fall apart to enjoy the Vala's touch. "All yours... Melkor, please..."
Words eluded him in his state of blissful exhilaration, but he trusted his beloved to take care of him and guide him, to show him all the sweet and sinful pleasures he had promised him with heated kisses and whispered words during their secret meetings on Almaren.
"Come here, little flame. Let me feel you."
Melkor's black robes fell from his shoulders like wispy shadows, shamelessly revealing the beautiful, alluring shape it had previously concealed. His hair fell down his back and shoulders like a waterfall of night, his skin was pale like frost with a slight tint of grey, and it seemed as though his fána barely managed to contain the powerful fëa inside, Valarin power thrumming within his veins. Mairon was drawn to him as if by some kind of spell, and he eagerly closed the distance between them to be taken into his lover's waiting arms.
It felt like being pulled into the heart of a storm, like sparks of lightning dancing on his skin as euphoria filled his entire being. The world around them was drowned out by Melkor's mighty presence, and strong hands traced every curve of the Maia's fána, exploring him to his heart's content. As if he was a piece of art, a precious gem.
"I love you," Mairon whispered.
The smile on Melkor's lips and the light in his eyes was so bright and brilliant, it seemed to him as though he was glimpsing the Imperishable Flame itself within his beloved.
"And I love you as well, my precious."
Mairon wrapped his arms around the Vala's neck when Melkor kissed him, claiming his lips with feverish passion. Their fánar moved in unison and with ever increasing urgency, hands roaming, exploring, holding on to one another. It didn't take long until Mairon sank back onto the bed and pulled Melkor with him, a soft, indulgent sigh falling from his lips.
He was a picture of sin, eyes half-lidded, messy locks spread out on black satin sheets, lips glistening wet in the dim light, legs spread for his lover; and to Melkor there was no greater treasure, nothing more beautiful in this world than his beloved Maia.
"My little flame..." he whispered, completely and utterly enraptured.
Mairon arched his back when the Vala's cool lips planted small kisses on his neck, and his breathless moans were music to his lover's ears.
"My love..."
Melkor slowly moved lower and lower, covering the Maia's fána with countless kisses until he reached the inside of his thighs, legs parting for him willingly.
"Mine."
"Yours," Mairon whispered, heat pooling in his core as he gazed upon Melkor's arousal, mirroring his own.
It felt as though everything around them ceased to exist at that moment. There was nothing left except for them, two Ainur lost in a rush of pure bliss and passion, becoming one as their fánar intertwined. Moans and gasps of delight and satisfaction filled the bedchamber, creating an ever-changing melody. Their fëar reached for each other in kind, tendrils of radiant light, searing flame, starless night and glittering ice weaving together in glorious harmony.
Mairon didn't know whether merely a few hours or an entire century passed while Melkor showed him the ways of pleasure. Head thrown back, eyes closed, his mouth fell open to release a blissful cry when his beloved moved inside him, making him feel all those wonderful, divine sensations he had never experienced before. Melkor's hand found his and they held onto each other as they reached their peak together, tumbling down from their high locked in each other's embrace, the first of many before they finally collapsed onto the bed, exhausted and content.
Melkor lay down on his side, bringing their fánar together once more before pulling a blanket over the two of them to keep the fire spirit warm.
"Would you like to rest now?" he asked, his voice gentle and quiet, and nuzzled up against his beloved.
"I can carry you back to your own room or you can sleep here, if you wish."
"I want to stay with you," Mairon said, closing his eyes as he melted into Melkor's embrace. "And I want to wake up next to you, whenever that may be. I have been away from you for so long, I will not suffer another lonely night."
"Tonight and for as long as Arda endures, little flame. I will always be with you."

Reflection:
This week was supposed to be focused solely on the website and visual elements, but I attempted to tackle more than I could handle in order to present them in the mid-Jury. I still feel somewhat lost amidst the multitude of tasks, and the mid-Jury is approaching quickly with limited time available.
It was scheduled for me to meet with the expert who would assist me last week, so I met with her last Thursday. She provided me with some resources, reviewed my articles, and gave me additional ideas. The conversation was flexible and productive.
On Tuesday of this week, I met with another expert, Haifa from Boost agency. We met via Zoom and discussed my designs and what I aimed to achieve. However, I encountered an issue with Zoom regarding the clarity of the designs, so I sent them to her via WhatsApp.
I started designing the blog prototype using XD, creating several home pages and article pages. However, XD doesn't support Arabic well, so I'm now considering starting directly with Webflow. I watched tutorials for things I haven't dealt with before, so I'll start this weekend.
I wrote four and a half articles, and I outlined what the other articles will be about and came up with titles for some of them. Since I've finished four articles now, I feel I'll be more prepared to focus on article illustrations. What takes me a long time is that I'm meticulous and like to research deeply. Also, I want the writing style to resemble old books, so I strive to emulate that, which takes some time in rewriting.
I chose a style for the illustrations; I liked how the typefaces are different, with contrast, blending silent shapes and outlines. However, the challenge lies in drawing the rest of the illustrations in the same style.
I started designing the posts, but I plan to gather more inspirations and finish the illustrations first before starting them.
I also created visual elements, but I didn't like them, feeling that their style is different from what I want, and they're not consistent with the rest of the brand. So, I came up with another idea that I'll also try.
Despite working hard this week and starting many tasks, I feel I'm very late to catch up with the mid-Jury.

Chapter 8: Out of your head.
Tumblr media

-In which the daughter of the Lord of Darkness who was born with the sole purpose of destroying the universe falls in love with Peter Parker.-
Masterlist.
-----------------------------------
"Checkmate."  Carina smiles as she has won the game of chess against the Ancient One.
"Well played." The ancient one said with a smile but one she knew all too well.
She sighs, leaning back on the chair and crossing her arms. "You're letting me win."
"I can assure you, little star I'm not letting you win." The ancient one said calmly, the smile never changing yet her eyes shine with rare mischievousness. "You should stop doubting yourself."
"Mmhm." Carine hums, eyes full of suspicion.
"Shall we play another round?" Asked the supreme and with a flick of her hand, the pieces went back to their original position.
Grabbing a white pawn and moving it a space forward, Carina nodded. "Let's play."
Halfway through the game, something pops into Carina's mind. "Have you ever had odd dreams?"
The ancient one glanced at her after moving her knight. "Sometimes, why?"
"Like what?" She asks, tilting her head thinking about her next move.
"Like..." the ancient one, hums in thought before a small smile forms on her face. "Once I dreamt that I was a pig."
Carina giggled. "Really?"
The supreme nodded. "They called me the Rancid One."
"That's awful," Carina scrunched her nose. "Wonder what makes you dream that?"
"There is a theory that dreams are ourselves in other realities, other universes." Elaborated the ancient one with an air of wisdom. "Have you had odd dreams lately?"
"Not really.... Just sometimes." Carine hums, taking one of the Ancient One's black pawns.
The supreme observes the bord thoughtfully. "And what do you dream about, little star?"
"Odd places." Carina pauses, tilting her head with a soft frown as she recalls the last dream she had. "People, weird faceless creatures."
"Faceless creatures?" asks the supreme, eyes shining with curiosity.
"But they were not gruesome like one would imagine, more like a puppy with wings and– look."
Carina pulled her satchel up on her legs, forgetting all about the chess game that she was about to win and grabbed her sketchbook out of it. She passes page after page, drawings and colours covering the white paper, Carina settle on the pages near the end of the book, where she had drawn the creature she was speaking of, along with the hybrid horse she saw and a rough sketch of the village.
She passed the book to the Ancient One, who contemplates it, eyes roaming in-between drawings.
"They were nice, funny like puppies and those with the horns were also nice, a lot more calm." Carina told her, tilting her head to look at the drawings, frowning at the lack of colors. "I would have also painted the colours too but I don't have much paint left. Do you think that maybe I could go to the market soon?"
"I thought you had more than enough from the last time." The Ancient One glanced at her.
"I did but I used it to paint the walls of my room." Carina admits sheepishly.
"Of course you did." The ancient one smiled amusingly before her eyes gaze at the village she drew. "Do you dream of this place often?"
Carina shook her head. "No, I don't dream often but when I do it is always different."
"Different how?" The supreme asks, turning the page to a different drawing.
"Well... it's never the same place and I usually never have anything to interact with."
The ancient one furrowed her eyebrows a little as she was trying to decipher some sort of puzzle when Master Beau approached them.
He cleared his throat earning their attention, he nodded his head at Carina in greeting before turning to the Ancient One.
"You are needed, Ancient One."
"Very well." The Supreme shot him an appreciative nod. "Thank you, Master Beau."
"So, about the market?" Carina mumbles as the Ancient One closes the sketchbook.
She gave Carina a warm smile as she passes the book back. "We'll discuss it later, little star until then meditate."
"Alright." Carina smiled back at her but her smile was one of disappointment. "I'll wait until then."
And with a last smile, the Supreme left with Master Beau in tow leaving Carina with her own company.
She sighs, her head leaning against her palm, while her free hand plays with her necklace. Going to the market was one of Carina's favourite activities, usually, she was not allowed to leave the temple, either the Kamar Taj or any of the other sanctums, but once every blue moon there is an opportunity where she is allowed to leave the temple for a bit -with adult company, of course, which is usually Wong- when she needs paintings which were not as often as it sounds, last time she went to the market was five months ago, so needless to say she was itching to go.
Having nothing else to do, Carina placed her sketchbook back inside her bag and decided she wanted to spend the rest of her day in between books, like the swot that she was, so she headed to the library but before Carina made a detour to the kitchens, to grab a cup of tea and a plate of Sel Roti.
Once she passed the large wooden doors of the library she was surprised to find Stephen Strange, deep into a book, but a very visible frown on his face before he forcefully shut it.
"Please be more careful when handle books or Wong's going to have your neck for it."
Stephen didn't even look up at her, he just sighed running a hand over his face while leaning against the chair in frustration.
Carina sat down in front of him, placing the plate of fried delights and her tea on the table. "What's got you looking like a sourpuss?"
He didn't say anything which was unusual for Stephen 'The Know It All' Strange, instead of using words just narrows his eyes at her to show his annoyance but Carina over the weeks had become accustomed to it, as matter of fact, she became immune to it.
"How about a joke?" Carina asks, grining at Stephen stoic face.
"I'm too busy to pretend to be intersted, so no." He said, grabbing another book and opening it.
"Why didn't the melons get married?" She giggled at her joke while Stephen pause his reading but did not make any moves to acknowledge her. "Because they cantaloupe."
Another wave of cackles leaves Carina's mouth as she slaps the table, unable to get ahold of herself.
Stephen scoffs a laugh, shaking his head with the smallest smile. "Where did you learn that one?"
"Secret," Carina told him as her giggles ceased down. It was Wong but he'll be mad if she told anyone about his secret love for cheesy jokes.
"Better keep it that way, it was awful," He told her and Carina could tell his mood had lightened, even the slightest.
She slides a plate towards him. "Sel Roti? Bet it'll make you feel better."
"...Sure." Stephen grabbed one and took a bite of it while Carina took a sip of tea, it was missing some honey.
Her eyes moved to the titles of the books he was reading, most of them were about the casting of a portal and the hypothesis of the magic behind it. "How's class going, have you–"
And just as his good mood was starting to come back it went away, his eyes harden again as he place the Sel Roti down. "Go away, I'm busy."
"I take it, it's not so great." Carina mumbles, taking another sip of her tea ignoring once again Stephen's glare. "You're only starting, I'm sure it'll be alright."
"I'm not starting. It's been weeks," Stephen scoffs, leaning back into his chair, arms crossing in indignation. "Everyone else seem to get it but me."
Carina almost laugh, It was like having a three-year-old throw a tantrum over not getting his way. "Well, you're not like every else."
"Yeah, thanks for clarifying the obvious—"
"You're too proud, Stephen, an irrational perfectionist." Carina said, without missing a beat. "And books, for once, can't help."
Stephen regarded her for a moment, before scoffing acidly."Because you know me so well, don't you?"
"What I'm meant to say is that the practices of the Arts are more a matter of mind, soul and heart than it is about wit and knowledge, the power of will, dare I say."
"Power of will, huh?" Stephen's lips were pitching in irritation. "I am willing but yet nothing's happening."
"It's the same dilemma since you came here, you're stuck in your head."
"Oh, how rich of you to give advice."
Carina's drew her brows together, "What are you on about?"
"Y'know, for someone who's caring such a big name and such a potential, it's being wasted away with you, but then again all of it is questionable for someone who's not even allowed to go their simple magic classes," He snarls, eyes hardening with every word. "So, don't give me a lecture when you don't know what you're talking about."
His words hurt. Carina was washed over by a contrast of a cold sensation and burning embarrassment, it was an electric shock of realization, that Stephen Strange was not her friend as she had thought, she was a fool to believe otherwise, a fool to believe that her name would change nothing, but she had it coming, she should have kept her distance as she does with the other students.
She blinked. "You're being mean, so I'm going to go."
Carina avoided his eyes as she stood up, gather her things and walked away but before she walked through the doors she stopped and look back at him. "One day you'll realize that getting out of your head, turning the page, will be great because then you'll realize there's so much more of life than what you're stuck on."
And with that, she left, not feeling like entertaining any conversation with him at the moment.

hello! i’m here for ur free tarot readings! could i pls have a love/connection read on me and S.I? we have a class together and get along rlly well, i have some romantic interest in her and think she's cute! tysm! -🫧🪷🧩
Hello 🫧🪷🧩 Thank you for requesting a reading from me c: Below the cut is your reading, and if you have any feedback for me once you've gone through it I would love to hear it ♥
I do not do readings that would attempt to answer what another person is thinking or feelings, as it's not within my ethical paradigm to do so. With this in mind I took some liberty in reframing your request to center it on you, instead. I decided to ask: 1. What are your most attractive qualities? 2. What qualities might need addressing in order to pursue a relationship in general, and specifically with S.I? The cards on the left are for 1. The cards on the right are for 2.
Tumblr media
My Interpretation: 1. You seem to possess a strong emotional nature and inherent empathy for others. You seem to be highly intuitive and sensitive to others needs. You also appear to have a stability of mind and presence that others can rely on. They can count on you to uphold boundaries for yourself as well as respect those of others ♥ 2. This sequence of cards gave me some thought, but I think that's because they are deeply tied to the first sequence, more than I had anticipated! I was originally a bit taken aback by your 2 first cards as they make quite a contrasting image; an emotionally deep Queen and a rather authoritative and grounded Emperor. They are rather opposites! This gave me a clue to the Judgement card, however. The Judgement card is a strong call to make a change of some kind, to merge two opposite things into a new, third thing. It would seem that while you are indeed a person who upholds boundaries and are supportive of others, perhaps you do this to excess? Your own emotions might end up neglected in your strong desire to be there for others and uphold boundaries of what you consider to be right and wrong, and I think the cards are encouraging you to let go of some of that earnest responsibility for others. Other people are ultimately responsible for their own emotions, and needs. We can be inclusive and kind but we cannot perceive or predict everyone's needs at all times! We need to take care of ourselves too. The page of cups gave me a message of a gift of some kind, and as I dug into this reading intuitively I feel that the cards are encouraging you to accept other people's feelings openly and without so much need to cater to them or care for them constantly. Fill your own cup first. Perhaps this is especially true for your connection with S.I. Take care of yourself first so that you can be receptive and open for her emotions if there should be any. Anyone who would make a good partner in a relationship of any kind, be it romantic or platonic, need to know how to uphold their own boundaries and speak their own needs. Do not take on the burdens of everyone around you, at all times ♥ As an addition I drew an Oracle Card for you, to give some advice on the second question of your reading:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The affirmation "I welcome transformation and intuition into my life" might be beneficial for you. Allow yourself to feel intuitively into things more-so than approach them with analysis and contemplation. Ground yourself and let go of the need to be there for others constantly, and attempt to ease the fears that might come up with that process, perhaps you are afraid that if you're not constantly showing up for others they will not find value in you? This is not true, you are worthy just as you are, not only for what you provide for others. Much Love, Safi

Work Play Work pt1
Intro
The first task we were given when assigned this project in studio was to create a kind of starter zine to be used as inspiration. We were given sheets of newsprint to fold up into a very basic zine. We were then given a list of prompts that we used to create drawings. We had very short timeframes to draw with these prompts (30 secs, 1 min). I didn’t really enjoy this task that much, as I kept getting stuck drawing the same thing, because I couldn’t think of new things fast enough. But, it was a helpful starting point for me. I drew some very quick simple figures with a felt pen that I liked, and I took the simple things that I kept drawing over and over (bunnies, ghosts) to develop in my zine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Research Orlando by Virginia Woolfe I originally picked this text out of the ones presented to us because it explored themes of gender identity and fluidity, which are themes I had explored in my work before, and themes I find myself particularly drawn to. (I had also watched the movie in the past, though I didn’t remember much of it). The scene in particular describes the switch in sex very matter-of-factly, simply stating that Orlando had changed physically, but not mentally. The narration of the scene in the second half of the extract could be interpreted as confused by the whole ordeal, or my personal favourite interpretation, seems to be mocking those who believe so strongly in the gender binary. Upon researching more about the novel, I learned that this exploration of gender continues throughout the novel, as Orlando continues to cross- dress and explore androgyny. Another theme that almost always comes hand in hand with gender, is exploring sexuality. While homosexual attraction is not explicitly mentioned in the novel (published in 1928), It is heavily implied. Orlando themselves was heavily based on Woolf’s female lover at the time. Woolf used Orlando as a tool to express her frustration at the continued marginalisation of women in society, as well as to examine whether gender roles are natural instincts or societal influences. As a satire of the classic Victorian biography, Woolf questions if there is any real difference between the imagined and the reality. As mentioned before, I have explored the themes of gender binary in previous projects (from foundation), but for this zine, I want to take a more lighthearted approach. Taking inspiration from the first year project; Let there be light, where I used loose religious themes to create an almost comedic zine, I want to use a similar tone for this project. Considering the studio workshop was all about being free-er and getting all you thoughts on a page, this zine will probably be a lot looser and a lot less planned, but I like the effect of combining image making with short words and phrases. If I have time I may even use the letterpress. The time frame we were given to make our original zines for this project is very short (one week), so I have to use materials I can create with quickly. My initial thoughts are to use inks, as they can be used with a brush or dip pen for different levels of control. I could also then work on top with digital, by scanning the pages in and editing with my iPad.
Process
Tumblr media
At this point in the project I felt I had hit a wall. I didn’t like much of what I had made in the initial newsprint zine. There were a few motifs that I liked, and I wanted to incorporate but I wasn’t sure of the direction I wanted to take the zine. It was at this point in the process I attended an open- mic night for the transgender community. I heard a lot of poetry that night but the one that stuck out to me in relation to the project was about the idea of rebuilding and reshaping the body into what you want it to be. I thought this poem had a lot of similarities with the text, and this poem gave me a lot of inspiration for my zine. However at this point there wasn’t much time left to make the zine, so I opted to make it digitally. I tried to use a variety of brushes and textures however. I wrote my own poem inspired by the poem I had heard at the open mic night (I would have liked to used the original, but I had forgotten who had performed it. If I had after the fact I would have recorded it or something). I kept the colours simple, black, white and blue to mimic the original newsprint zine. I also used the figures I had originally drawn in that zine as well.
Reflection
Im satisfied with my final zine. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling very inspired during this project until right at the end, which meant I couldn’t include a lot of my original ideas like using ink or letterpress. I think going forward, I should probably just start by working with different mediums and seeing if inspiration comes from there. I ended up changing the layout of the zines last few pages after the zine swap, after being told by a tutor that I should include more single-page layouts. I think it makes the end flow a little better.

My Thoughts: The Black God’s Drums
So, I finally finished this novella and y’all . . . I really like this one. Not only was it a fast read, but also the world building was really insanely good!
Tumblr media
Unsurprisingly, it was the cover which drew me in; I mean, look at that, it’s gorgeous. Then, when I opened the book, the style of narration, the sense of characterisation was so insanely strong. I normally don’t like things written in this style of English, but it was very easy to fall into and gave such a strong sense of both chracter and also world building.
First, I would just like to say how much I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Creeper, or Jacqueline, is our teenage protagonist; normally the designated age for teenage protagonists are 16 or maybe 17, but here, she’s 13. And something about that was so relieving; it’s young enough for it to sink in how young this girl is. The Captain turning her away due to her age and not really taking her seriously at first feels justified cause who would trust a 13 year old? But I love that their relationship not only develops but is the most focused in the book. Granted, it’s a very short story, but I enjoy watching Creeper and the Captain interact and silently care about one another.
This book also wasn’t afraid to be funny either. It actually made me laugh which is insanely rare for written works. One of my favourite exchanges in the entire book is this:
“You’re a smuggler!” I point out, extending my arms to take in the airship.
“But not a thief!” [The Captain] retorts evenly.
“The name of your ship is Midnight Robber!”
She pauses at this. Shrugs. Then says evenly: “It’s satire.”
Oh, and before I forget, the style of writing was so insanely good. It was a good way to quickly introduce me to this world and how these people speak, while also revealing a lot about our protagonist as well. I’m such a fan of author’s adapting their style or approach to writing according to either the world they’re writing for or the proagonists’ sense of character. Especially if it’s first person; if a protaognist is of upper class, I should see that in the style of narration. If they’re lower class, I should see that in the style of narration, and etcetera etcetera. It’s an insanely good way of showing a reader exactly what they’re getting into and I wish more writers would do this.
Also, and I’m aware this is most likely a thing because of Creeper’s young age, but I love that there’s no romance. I’m honestly getting tired of romance at this point, I feel like it very rarely meets my expectations, I would much rather read of epic tales with the main relationships being friendship and family based. It’s a shame most of the books that attract me centre around romance, as I find found family stories to much more intruiging (if any of y’all can give me POC found family recs, my DM’s are open 😌)
But anyway, yes, so they were a huge draw for me; but I also enjoyed all of the side characters. I loved the Nuns, I surprisingly loved Feral, and even though she was only in it for a few pages, I relished in Jewel’s character. I think the only part I wasn’t very interested in were the actual Goddesses, which sucks since they’re basically the selling point of this story. But I dunno, I wasn’t very intruiged much with their placement in the story(although, chalk that up to ignorance more then anything, unfortunately I don’t know much about many religions outside of christainity).
It’s also rare that this is a thing, but I was so drawn into the history of this world, I really wish there was more to this story. I have no idea if there are any plans for a sequel, but I would absolutely be down for picking it up, I wanna know what happens with all of these characters.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s into Sci-Fi, women characters and POC lead casts. Oh, and worldbuilding. Lot of worldbuilding.
I hereby dub this novella:
8/10
Minus points for being so short, but easily it can regain them back with a sequel so I can find out more about this world.
But anyway, now that I’ve finished this story, I’m going to move onto a novel I’ve had sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust for months.
Tumblr media
As y’all know, I love angst, I love mystery and I love drama. Even though I’ve been slow to get through this, I’m still intruiged to find out what happens in this book. But after reading just the first four chapters, wooooo boy, is it already depressing.
I’m so excited.
Klutzy out! ✌🏾

Hands-Benedict Bridgerton x Reader
Tumblr media
(GIF credit to @imaginethisimaginethat)
MASTERLIST
Summary: Hands are every artists worst nightmare, it’s always best to have a real model for help.
Characters: Benedict Bridgerton x Reader
Meanings: (Y/N)=Your name
Warnings: Fluff, fluff, fluff, slight smut
                                         *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Benedict was frustrated as he crumpled up another piece of paper from his sketch book, angrily throwing it towards the bin, only for it to mock him as it bounced off the rim. He let out a big huff, staring the the blank book in his lap. He lightly tapped his pencil against his head, as if it would help him suddenly be able to draw. And what did he want to draw? A hand.
Hands seemed to be the bane of his existence when it came to his artwork. He couldn't understand why they were so hard to draw. How could he capture every emotion and bit of soul of a person when he drew a pair of eyes, but the hands he drew looked like a twisted and wilting tree? Perhaps he had been staring at the pages for too long, he thought, rubbing at his eyes.
"Benedict?" his wife's voice called out down the hall.
This instantly lifted his spirits, carelessly dropping the book and pencil onto the table before following the sound of his (Y/N)'s angelic voice. She was facing away from him when he spotted her, quickly approaching from behind and wrapping his arms around her torso. She squealed at first, startled at the gesture until she realised it was Benedict.
"You gave me a fright." she laughed, her eyes scrunching up and smile widening as he peppered kisses on her neck, it tickled.
He let go of her to spin her around, wanting to see her beautiful face."I'm sorry, I had to take the opportunity."
"I am only joking with you my love." she beamed."I have missed you today."
He leaned his head down, slowly kissing her."I have missed you more."
He took her hand, guiding her to the front room and to the lounger big enough for the two of them. (Y/N) was pulled into his chest as they snuggled up, feeling content now that they were reunited.
"How was your ladies lunch?" Benedict asked, pressing another gentle kiss to her head.
“It was lovely, darling. I haven't seen some of my friends in so long. Lily is getting married soon, we should be receiving invites any day, and I could not believe how big Fleur has become with child!"
"Isn't the baby due soon?"
"Yes, they believe it will be a boy."
Benedict's arm that was wrapped around her waist subconsciously made it's way to her stomach."Perhaps we too will be in the same situation in the near future."
"Only if we keep trying." she cheekily glanced up at him.
"We will try for as much and for as long as we like." he whispered into her ear, sending shudders down her spine.
(Y/N) took a shaky breath before speaking."Nothing else eventful happened today, just a group of women gossiping around tea and cakes."
"It still sounds like a nice day." he hadn't meant to sound so down.
"Oh, has something happened today?" (Y/N) sat up to look at him.
He smiled at her concern."No, nothing darling."
"Something is on your mind, or it was bothering you before I came home."
"You do make all my stress melt away."
"Enough with the sweet compliments my love. Tell me."
He looked at her, not wanting to take attention away from their blissful moment. It wasn't as if his problem was the end of the world, he was acting like a child if anything. However, his wife would only worry until he told her. He too sat up straighter, holding her hands.
"I just...got frustrated with how I drew today." he explained.
"Oh Ben," (Y/N) sadly smiled,"what were you struggling with?"
"I could not for the life of me draw a hand. Or even a finger. Or a fingernail!"
She brushed away some hair dangling in front of his forehead."I can understand why they are hard to draw."
"You do?"
"Well, everyone's hands are different. Some are small, some are big, there are thin ones where you can see the bones protruding, then there are those which you can't; people also have different nail lengths and shapes, and not to mention all of the life lines and any scarring or marks that may adorn them."
"Which explains why I was struggling."
"Practice can sometimes take time. What we're you copying from?"
He hesitated to answer."Memory. I looked at my own hands too but that didn't work."
"You needed a life model."
"Yes."
"Well now you have one."
"Hm?"
"Well who better to model for you than your own dear wife?"
They grinned at each other as (Y/N) stood, pulling Benedict to stand too. She quickly pecked his lips, then gestured for him to lead the way. He had a firm grip on her hand, hoping he wouldn't embarrass himself and would somewhat succeed at his next attempt.
(Y/N) noticed the pile of balled up paper in or surrounding the bin. She felt sad for a moment, knowing he was so passionate about his work and that this was just a tiny hurdle in his pursuit to artistry. (Y/N) pressed down on Benedict's shoulders, making him sit in the chair behind him. She handed him his book and pencil before pulling a chair up in front of him.
"How would you like me?"
Benedict smirked.
(Y/N) playfully rolled her eyes."My hands."
He had tried to hold back a laugh but couldn't. Although (Y/N) was also trying not to laugh, she let it out as she jokingly smacked him his his book.
"I'm sorry." Benedict only just managed to say.
The couple tried to calm themselves, becoming poised again. Benedict relaxed back into the chair, studying (Y/N) and how he thought she could help, yet his mind was still clouded by the suggested topic they had just laughed about.
"Rest your elbow on the table." he instructed. (Y/N) did so."Now lift your lower arm and just have a relaxed hand."
(Y/N) watched Benedict as he decided whether it was right or not. She had been holding in a breath until his pencil hit the paper, trying to relax into the pose. Why was she suddenly feeling hot under her dress? She could feel her skin burning, and it crept up from her chest, to her neck, to her face. It wasn't as if she hadn't been under his intense and alluring gaze before, especially in...other situations together, so why was her husband studying and drawing her so intimidating?
Benedict admittedly didn't want to draw his wife in that moment. He wanted something more to do with her body, not jot it down on a piece of paper. He noticed how she was slightly squirming in her seat, she couldn't hold eye contact for more than two seconds. She was flustered, exactly how he liked her; he liked knowing that he still had an effect on her, and she certainly did on him. Although he could have thrown the damn book across the room without a second thought, he wondered how long he could play this out for, even if it was painful for him too.
They both sat in complete silence, the scraping of the lead on the paper was the only sound in the room. Though Benedict could have sworn he heard (Y/N)'s breathing getting sharper.
"Is it going well my love?" her throat was unexpectedly dry.
"Yes. I think you were right, I just needed the right model." he proudly put down his pencil, turning around the book with a smile.
(Y/N) lowered her hand, smiling when she saw how well he had done."Oh Benedict! It's perfect, you had no need to doubt yourself."
"It's just like you said," he set down the book, leaning forward to once again hold her modelling hand,"every hand is different. I see these delicate hands everyday, and yet, there was so much I didn't know about them."
His fingers were slowly caressing her hand, tickling her as he ran his fingertips around it in no particular pattern.
"Hm?" she could only just make out.
"You have a freckle here that I did not notice. You have quite long life lines, if I were a palm reader, you would be receiving very good news. And your ring fits ever so perfectly onto your finger."
He placed a very tender kiss to her hand, and (Y/N) melted. As he raised his head, their faces were only just apart, which Benedict changed, kissing her just as gently as he had kissed her hand. His hand slipped to hold the back of her head, but there was no list or urge to start this, it was steady, it was almost teasing but in the best way possible. They couldn't deny that they had a burning love for one another, and they weren't afraid to show it.
"You are the most beautiful thing I have ever drawn and set eyes upon, (Y/N) Bridgerton." he breathed out.
"I love you."
"I love you." he stood, raising (Y/N) to her feet.
With hands tightly clasped again, they actually took their time walking to their chambers, gazing into each others eyes so much that it was a miracle they were walking in a straight line. This wasn't naughty, or sinful, or just a want, this was love, and love could be shown in the biggest and smallest gestures.

The words we keep
Soulmate au - first words tattoed on the wrist
Includes: Venti | Diluc | Kaeya | Albedo | Zhongli | Xiao | Childe
Mentions of suicide in Zhongli; angst and brief violence for Childe
Tumblr media
Oh you're here- I mean! I'm sorry I didn't mean to take your spot!
The bard had guessed that he'd meet his soulmate either in Angel's Share, in Windrise, or at the hands of his statue in Mondstadt. But the latter two were more unlikely. But he doesn't mind sharing his space with you really. In fact, Venti would be more than willing to let you in his space. But lo and behold! He didn't think he'd meet you at the hands of his statue!
Nights prior, you always heard a voice singing songs of various emotions. The voice eventually led you to Barbatos's statue. When you looked up, you saw the bard in green. His voice was very calming and pleasant to hear, so you always visited the statue at night. Until recently, your curiosity grew. Why does the bard always stay there at night?
Seeing your relaxed form on his statue, hair swaying in the wind. Venti just went soft. "Quite the lovely view isn't it?"
He didn't mean to surprise but you still did become surprised. He found it endearing. "Oh you're here- I mean! I'm sorry I didn't mean to take your spot!"
Tumblr media
Ah- you scared them. Please don't do that.
Now who did he scare and what did he do to warrant his soulmate's first words to him? Diluc has always been aware that he can be intimidating and usually he doesn't mind that. But for you- he does give half a mind.
There was a new winemaker that Connor had hired and Diluc has yet to meet them. Connor had even commented that their methods were a bit unusual. But if it's enough to get the former's approval, then Diluc will see to this newcomer.
Diluc met you during the night, just at the edges of the Stone Gate that signifies the border between Mondtsadt and Liyue. The man was simply patrolling around the area for any hidden dangers. That's when he saw you, kneeling on the ground with a group of slimes surrounding you. Seeing your plight, Diliuc quickly ran and summoned his greatsword. With a few swipes imbued with pyro, the slimes hastily retreated. He was about to chase them off, but he was more concerned of your safety.
Diluc was about to speak when you cut him off as you stood up, dusting your clothes. "Ah- you scared them. Please don't do that."
Diluc was dumbstruck for a second. He did not expect to meet his soulmate right here right now. Seeing his stupefied look, you raised a brow. "Are… you alright, Sir Diluc?"
"Those slimes were about to attack you." Diluc pointed out. His reply made you chuckle a bit and shake your head to the sides. Did he say anything funny?
"No they were not. I was trying to befriend them so that I could use their slime concentrations for the winery."
Now Diluc was even more confused. Slime? For tbe winery? "Wait- you're the new-"
"Winemaker. And your soulmate if you're not yet aware. Come on, let's go look for those slimes! We can talk on the way about our… professional and not-so professional side of our relationship." And with that, you trailed to the path of the slimes with a smile on your face. As for the wine tycoon, he was still confused- like a lost puppy, but there was this gentle smile that landed on his lips as he followed you.
Tumblr media
Yes, I am suffering and in need of a Pyro Vision. Soulmate or not, if you don't have a Pyro Vision- shoo.
The text tattooed on Kaeya's wrist always left him laughing. He just knows, that this was meant to be a comical moment. He can even imagine the moment he meets his soulmate just from these words alone. But of course, he does worry about your well-being. Kaeya had his guesses. Maybe he would meet you in Dragonspine or maybe- you were an unprepared tourist enduring the permafrost of Snezhnaya and he'd meet you there. Well- in the end, he's still amused at your winterish pain.
Sure enough, Kaeya was tasked to scout Dragonspine for any Fatui activity. He could feel it under his skin that he'll meet you any second now. As he traversed through the mountain path, he noticed a group of warming seelies hovering over… someone? And that someone is shivering immensely. The captain grinned.
You heard footsteps approaching but you stayed in your crouched position, determined to preserve your body temperature. The seelies were helping, sure, but they were not enough to counter the coldness your Cryo Vision emanates. Damn it. Just because you're a cryo user doesn't mean you're immune to sheer cold.
The footsteps stopped and you snorted at the words the stranger spoke, "Could this possibly be my soulmate suffering in the cold and in need of a Pyro Vision?"
You huffed, you didn't want to meet your soulmate in this kind of situation. But it happened anyway, much to your dismay. Still crouched, you managed to turn to face the man as seelies continued hovering around.
"Yes, I am suffering and in need of a Pyro Vision. Soulmate or not, if you don't have a Pyro Vision- shoo."
Now actually hearing it from you made Kaeya laugh hard. If he was already amused just from the ink on his wrist before, Kaeya's now even more so deeply amused. You muttered sadist on his way. Deciding he's had enough a good laugh for today, the captain gave you his fur coat and a warming bottle. "Come on, let's get you some place warm, yes?"
Tumblr media
You're not the only one! I actually did one for you, too!
When his mind is not occupied by hus studies, it would often drift ink embedded on his wrist. Everytime Albedo does so, he would often wonder what did the two of make for each other that would lead to you eventual meeting.
The Windblume Festival arrived, and of course, so will tourists from other lands. Usually, Albedo would simply pay no heed to the ongoing festivities and their participants. But this time- things were different. You unknowingly caught the alchemist's eye. There was this sudden itch in his hands- and Albedo knew he had to sketch you form. However, before he could even approach you- you left to another direction.
He caught sight of you again the next day. You were reading a book on a bench, with the plaza fountain giving you a beautiful background for Albedo. Discreetly, the alchemist sat on a bench front of yours and began sketching. Unbeknownst by him, you were also entranced by his form and you, too, began sketching.
Albedo was first to finish- and like usual, he would give the sketch to the person he drew of even if they were strangers. As he walked, there was this certain nervousness that found way in his stomach. This never happened before. Why was he nervous?
Once close enough, Albedo cleared his throat and handed you his sketch, "I know this seems suspicious, but I want you to have this. You have a wonderful form."
You'd be lying if you said your heart did not stop a beat at his words. When you saw the paper he was offering you, you gasped at how he caught every detail of you. Bashful, you tore the page you were drawing on from sketchbook and gave it to him.
"You're not the only one! I actually did one for you, too!"
When your words reached his ears, Archons bless you as he gave you a genuine and joyful smile.
Tumblr media
Please... don't touch my heart that wants to disappear.
When Zhongli fully embraced his mortal form, he didn't expect the universe to gift him a soulmate. Like a snake, ink slithered into words that gave his heart a certain sadness. Zhongli knew, you were suffering somewhere... Out there...
He saw you first at the highest peak of Guyun Stone Forest. Everything happened so quickly. One second he was watching your distant form from the beaches below then the next he knew- his heart dropped, the same way you willingly fell to the hands of death that waited in the sea. The archon did what he knew is right- and that is saving you.
To Zhongli, immoratlity can both be a blessing and a curse. When your skins touched, he knew you were of immortality. He could sense it. And he could also sense the tiredness that nest in your soul from the burden of immortality.
Once Zhongli landed on safe ground, that's when he spoke. "I won't ask why, however is this truly what you want?"
The way his words reflected the ink written on your wrist made you open your eyes wide. When the realization sank in- that this man is your soulmate, you began crying. You were tired of life- but this man- this man is now your lock away from your want for death. If you stayed with him- another cycle of seeing the people you love come and go.
"Please..." you begged, "don't touch my heart that wants to disappear..."
Your voice was sad and pleading- but Zhongli was a stubborn man, just like his element. He wanted to help you but not by giving your death. He wanted you to see life in a new light, hopefully with him by your side.
Tumblr media
Excuse me... Here- for you. Qingxin.
Xiao was always resolute in his resolve that he has no need of a soulmate deemed by the universe. However, there are times that he would let his mind flutter around the concept. Specifically, around the words elegantly written on his wrist and his soulmate. Xiao would question why would you give him qingxin flowers in the first place. Other than that, there was also this underlying worry in his thoughts about you and the qingxin flowers. These flowers... they can only be gathered on high stone peaks. What if you slipped and fall?
This leads Xiao to have days where he just spends his time at the peaks of Jueyun Karst, looking out for any foolish person scale mountains just for qingxin. It's not because he's worried about you no- Xiao just doesn't want anyone die under his protection over Liyue. There has already been too much deat-
"Excuse me..."
At the voice, Xiao's head whipped to your direction with eyes wide in surprise.
"Here- for you. Qingxin."
There was this bored look in your face, but Xiao could see the worry in your eyes. Worry? Were you worried about him? Xiao frowned at the thought but still took the flowers from your outstretched hand.
"Foolish mortal... you could have gotten yourself hurt. Climbing peaks just for qingxin..."
... But still a small smile graced his lips and your heart melted.
"Thank you."

You're the only person I recognize whose eyes resemble the deep blue ocean.
The words tattooed on his wrist always left Childe questioning about his soulmate and what led them saying these words. Somehow- imagining the possible scenarios always makes him melt. This string of words- it never fails him to bring a sense of comfort in his heart. Childe learns of yoir existance during a mission.
The mission was to assasinate a captain of the Knights- you. He observed you for days and took note how you're silent and alone for the most part but kind to the people who approach you- he almost feels bad for having to kill you. The day came when he had to kill you. It was supposed to be a quick kill- but he should know better. You were a captain for a reason, so you fought back. However, in the end, Childe was stronger as he wrap his hands around your fragile neck. Another second, he'd have you dead- until a child's voice cut through- your little brother. The way your eyes watered up at the sight of your only family. Seeing the hurt in your eyes, Childe's thoughts went overdrive- No- nonononono way I'm killing in front of a kid- He simply can't- he was reminded of his little brother, too. With a wavering will to disobey orders, Childe let you go and retreated to the night,
"Don't think this is the last time you'll see me."
Like a shattering glass- the words he uttered made your heart shatter like glass...
Childe saw you again, this time in Liyue. When your gazes meet- there was a shock that passed through with tension suddenly gripping your necks. Childe swore he hid much of his identity physically that night- but he knew you recognized him. He managed to corner you in Yuehai Pavillion by swooping into an empty seat right in front of you. There was a tense moment and an oppresive air. He noticed how your hands were ready to grab your weapon. "How did you recognize me?"
You carefully thought of your words. And when you did reply, Childe have never felt so much despair until today. "You're the only person I recognize whose eyes resemble the deep blue ocean."
Back before he knew you- these words always comforted Childe- but now? Childe felt chills in his spine as despair clouded his mind. Why would the universe decide to have person he was supposed to kill his soulmate.
Similarly, his heart also shattered.
A/N: Look!!! I got meself some banners ksks---- this is all Childe's fault rawr

Caleb Widogast pushed his hair out of his face for the ei--nineteenth time in about as many minutes. Caleb and Essek were reading for pleasure this evening, with the aid of Comprehend Languages: Caleb the collected poems of Erdan Niemi, a famous Drow bard, and Essek, Die Waldhexe und andere Zemnische Volksmärchen. They were seated at opposite ends of one of the sofas in the tower salon, their legs in the middle not quite touching. But some time into Essek's reading, the repeated scrape of sweater against paper edge and rustle of hand in hair became too much for him to ignore.
It was a long time coming really. Essek recalled that it had been Veth who had braided back Caleb's hair for him, when they were in Aeor last. Since there was no Veth to braid it this time around, Caleb had fallen into the habit of roughly tying it back in a ponytail or bun, with varying degrees of success, depending on the amount of effort he put into it, which, lately, was middling, and tonight, none at all. There were times when the mess was charming: when Caleb shuffled into the dining room in the morning, stray locks framing his face; when he ran his hand through his hair in excitement at a new discovery; when some friendly wind caused wayward strands to brush just so against his lips. At the moment, though... Essek took a large sip of his wine and set the glass gently back on the table. "Caleb?"
"Hmm?"
Despite the response, Essek knew better than to continue right away. Caleb's head tilted up toward him slowly, but his eyes lingered on the page a moment longer. When blue finally met lilac, Essek took a  deep breath breath. "May I... braid your hair for you?"
Caleb blinked once, twice, three times, before his eyebrow and lips quirked up with a humor that was a little too insightful. "Well, if it’s bothering you..."
Essek gave a huff of laughter at being caught, before pressing his hands together in front of his lips, arranging his features into a semblance of solemnity. "It is driving me insane." Caleb laughed, as Essek hoped he would.
"I apologize if I have driven you to distraction," he replied, in a voice that sounded not remotely contrite. Essek averted his eyes and took another small sip of wine to provide an alibi for the warmth in his cheeks. "Please, by all means." Caleb pulled free the tie holding his hair in place, and with a small shake of his head, the copper strands fell down around his face and shoulders.
Essek gathered his composure, clearing his throat slightly. "Excellent -- ah, Liesl?" He said quickly, turning to the tortoiseshell cat relaxing in front of the fireplace. She opened one amber eye in response.
Liesl was Essek's right-hand cat. She had been standoffish at first, it was true, but it seemed Essek's years in politics were not wasted in the ruins of Aeor. "Liesl, would you please have Jaakko fetch me some additional hair ties and a comb?" Liesl, without raising her head from her paws, turned her gaze to the cat in question, all black and slender, whose interpretation of cleaning apparently included batting a piece of crumpled paper around the legs of a desk with incredible enthusiasm. At some unseen signal, he turned his attention to Liesl, and after a series of tail twitches, trotted off into  a nearby cat door. She turned her gaze back to Essek. "Thank you, Liesl. That will be all." She chirped at him in response and returned to her nap.
Caleb's eyes were back on his book now, but Essek did not recall anything in Niemi's works amusing enough to justify the grin on Caleb's face, which Essek now had an excuse to give due consideration. He did not think the braids that Verin favored in their youth would suite him particularly well, and they were a bit elaborate for a night in, besides. Perhaps just a variation on the Gwardanian-style braid Veth employed.
Jaakko returned in no time, the items required laid out neatly on a tray held aloft by his long tail, and, with one last small sip of wine, Essek rose from the sofa and moved to stand behind Caleb. He took a deep breath as he picked up the amber comb from the tray. There was no cause, he told himself sternly, for his heart to be racing as it was, which was, of course, a lie. He raised the comb above the copper strands. "I am going to begin now?"
"Ja, danke."
Whether the thanks was for the impending braid or the warning, Essek was not sure, but he drew the edge of the comb gently back along the scalp, carefully delineating a section of hair at the top of Caleb's head. He tied the sides and back out of the way, and if his face warmed at the brush of fingertips on neck, there was no one able to see it. He gathered up the hair closest to Caleb's face and divided it in thirds, before weaving the right third over the center and then left over center. He repeated the process, carefully gathering more strands in on the sides as he went. He was about halfway through with the braid, when Caleb leaned to the left without warning, nearly pulling the locks from his grasp.
"Pysy paikallasi!" Essek hissed, decades-old habit causing the words to spill from his lips in Undercommon, but it did not matter. Comprehend Languages was still in effect. "Mitä sinä teet?"
"I want some wine," Caleb explained, extending his arm to the side to demonstrate that the glass was just out reach.
"Did Veth allow you to move around when she braided your hair?"
"She never complained."
"Then she spoiled you terribly."
"Will you hand me the wine?"
"No," he replied sternly, gathering the strands into one hand, careful not to mix them up, and then leaning over and passing the goblet to its owner.
"You are a riot, Herr Thelyss," Caleb said dryly, but Essek caught a glimpse of a grin as he straightened.
"I am glad you think so. I have been thinking of taking my comedy show on the road when we are done here."
"You should ask Veth if she has any material you can use. Will there be a Mighty Nein discount on tickets?"
"Please, if anything, I should charge you all extra for the honor of heckling me."
Caleb gave a mock gasp. "The Nein? Heckle you? We would never."
"Ha! Tell me another one!"
Caleb's shoulders shook with quiet laughter.
Essek stopped gathering new hair into the top braid, braiding the remaining length of the locks together, and tying them off. He then shifted to the left and began the process again with a section starting at Caleb's left temple. From this vantage point, he could spy the gilded edges and precise black script of the book in Caleb hands (and what hands they were! Capable, as he knew, of both great destruction and healing. And, perhaps, from this vantage, he could also glimpse the stately sweep of his cheekbones, the curve of his nose, the strength of his jaw, but who was to say.).
"How are you enjoying the poetry so far?" He asked, affixing his eyes firmly to the task in front of him. He had not known whether Caleb enjoyed poetry, when he gifted it to him. He had doubted, though, that Caleb had much opportunity to avail himself of Kryn literature during his time in Rosohna, and Caleb had seemed delighted, even touched, by the gift. He did not seem to be making quick progress through the text, however.
"Very much so," Caleb replied after taking a sip of wine. "I imagine I am sometimes missing some nuance or cultural context -- Comprehend Languages is a bit of a blunt instrument -- but I am enjoying it even more than I thought I would. You almost made it sound dry in your description, when you gave it to me."
"Ah, no, not dry. Only, all young Drow are forced to read his works as part of our schooling, and it colors our enjoyment of it somewhat."
"I see."
"Do you have a favorite passage so far?"
Caleb did not respond right away. "Yes..." He admitted, at last, and added, "It is from the Courtship of Lael."
Essek nearly lost his grip on the braid as he fumbled the strands mid-crossing. He had forgotten the Courtship was so early in the text. "Oh?" He asked, hoping it came across as polite interest.
"Would you like to hear it?" Caleb's voice had a softer, deeper hue than usual.
"If you like."
There was quiet for a moment.
Caleb did not turn to the page -- he did not need to. He merely cleared his throat lightly, and began:
"My lover's skin is a field of stars. What bliss to wander among the heavens! Let me approach as a pilgrim from the dark. Let me worship on my knees before the holy light. Let no beacon go without a prayer from my lips."
Every opalescent freckle on Essek's skin was now a flame. He swallowed hard. "That--that was, ah ... evocative."
"Ja, I thought so too." Caleb chuckled.
Essek tied off the left braid and moved around to the opposite side. They passed the time in quiet, as Essek's dexterous hands, having found their rhythm, made quick work on the braid on the right. And if he had a new awareness of the freckles that made fiery constellations along the slope of Caleb's neck, he gave no indication.
"You know it is a good thing you are braiding my hair up, with us going deeper into the Genesis Ward tomorrow." Caleb said at last, as Essek gathered the braids and the loose strands left over in the back up into a neat ponytail, tying it off with Caleb's original tie. There was more than a little mischief in his voice. "I should hate for Devexian to see me for the first time in months with my hair a mess."
"You are a riot, Caleb Widogast," Essek drawled.
"I'm glad you think so."

Double edged scalpel ch. 7
Tumblr media
Ch.1 ch.2 ch.3 ch.4 ch.5 ch.6
Summary: in which Cassandra gets bullied and other sappy shenanigans
---
"Oh Nicole dear, so happy to see you again!" Duke's voice was cheerful as ever, tone masterfully crafted over years of being a businessman.
Nicole, taking small steps inside the ornate and now full of items room, greeted him with uncharacteristic giddiness.
"Duke! How's business?"
"Same as always, I'll be heading to Beneviento later tonight to deliver some tools for her," he took a long drag of his cigar and, noticing green eyes scanning over multiple items and said, "I also have your order."
With a childish grin on her face, she approached him, hands shuffling inside the small bag attached to her belt that all staff members had. She pulled out the money owed for her package and, in return, the Duke placed a decently sized box in her arms. With an oof she shifted it in a less precarious position, it's heavy contents seeming to plot against her small frame.
"Unfortunately I can't stay, duty calls. But thank you Duke."
"No worries, I do understand that your employers can be quite," he took another drag of his cigar, looking for the right word. "...demanding"
Nicole chuckled. That was one way to put it.
"Well until next time dear. Or if you find yourself in need of something else, I'll be here until six."
---
She was only wearing a long white towel when she heard a knock on the door. Assuming it was another maid, or even Anita inquiring about whether or not she'd be joining the rest of them for dinner, she opened the door just a crack.
It was a surprise to see none other than Cassandra standing there, her elegant frame in odd contrast with the modest corridor. She flung the door open, letting the brunette inside and took a quick glance down the hall, making sure no maid was on the floor after fainting due to fright.
"What are you doing here?"
"Aw, are you not happy to see me?" She was pouting, but her tone was joking.
Nicole rolled her eyes, but the small smile on her lips betrayed that she was indeed happy to see her. Cassandra only laughed instead, a beautiful melodious laugh, so unlike the dark cackles heard by prisoners down in the dungeons.
"Just sit down, I need to get dressed," Nicole pointed to the bed before moving to the small dresser and pulling out a clean uniform.
Cassandra went to sit on the slightly disheveled bed, eyes following the redhead's form as she let the towel drop to her feet and started to put on the various layers of her uniform. Then golden eyes darted to the box sitting on the bed. The tape sealing it had been cut not long after Nicole brought it back to her room to make sure all its contents made it safely. Not that she didn't trust the Duke, but postal service was postal service.
"What's this?" Cassandra inquired, trying to read the label but having no success as it had been scribbled over with a marker.
Nicole stilled for a moment, hands frozen on her white button up. She cleared her throat and shyly admitted:
"Actually that's for you. Do open it if you want."
Cassandra's eyes widened, a faint blush appearing on her cheeks. The gesture had really caught her off guard. She gingerly lifted the lid, inspecting it's contents for a moment and then hummed.
"And here I was thinking you like my hair. With how much you love to pull on it and all that."
Nicole, now fully clothed and sporting a deep blush, marched to her and plucked the two boxes of red hair dye from gloved hands. She placed them on her nightstand and, with her voice just slightly more high pitched, she turned to the brunette.
"Those are mine, I meant the rest of it." And, after a chuckle, "I mean have you seen my roots? They're horrible!"
Cassandra only gave her a deadpan look and, after a long moment, said: "I think your hair is beautiful."
She didn't wait for a reply, not that it would be anything more than a stammered mumble of course. Instead she chuckled and returned her attention to the box. She examined the rest of its contents and then gingerly lifted one of the few tomes inside. The cover was glossy and malleable, it's pages shiny and with a distinct typography smell to it. It was so unlike her other books, it's pristine white state making it feel extremely out of place in the castle. She glanced at Nicole inquisitively.
"I do appreciate the gift, don't misunderstand me, but surely you know there's a small bookshop's worth of medical books in this castle."
"With all due respect, from what I've seen most of them are at least somewhat outdated. Interesting, yes, but I thought you'd like to learn something more...modern." Then she pulled out another book. "This is the same one I used while studying forensic pathology. It would make teaching you some things easier. Uh… assuming you want that."
Nicole averted her gaze, suddenly unsure of the usefulness of her gift. Cassandra however grabbed her chin between two fingers and pulled her gaze back on her. She smiled, finding the shy demeanor beyond endearing.
"I'd love that."
A small smile appeared on thin lips and Nicole leaned in to kiss Cassandra. It was soft and short, but no less intimate than the deep kisses they shared so many times in Cassandra's bed.
They had to go anyway.
---
Let's go to the library, Cassandra said. It'll be empty, she said.
When Cassandra swung open the intricate door, only to find the other two sisters lounging on one of the couches, it's not like they could do a one eighty and leave the room. That would've been both impolite and highly suspicious.
Instead, Cassandra grabbed her arm protectively and led them to the reading spot farthest from the other two. They placed one of the textbooks on the small desk and Cassandra took out a notebook. This would've been a lot more fruitful with an actual body on hand, but there were still a couple days until the human flesh supply had to be replenished and Cassandra was beyond eager to start on some things. So, for now, they had to settle for theory alone.
It took all of five minutes for the other two sisters to make their way to their desk. Daniela had a giddy yet curious expression on her face, while Bela seemed as unreadable as ever, if not for a glint in her eyes that betrayed her interest.
"Whatcha dooooing?" Came Daniela's voice, who cocked her head not unlike a curious puppy would while looking at the book's contents.
"Working," Cassandra replied, a slight growl accompanying her words.
"Could've fooled me," Bela spoke from behind the youngest sister, eyeing the hand protectively placed on Nicole's waist.
Cassandra snapped her eyes at the blonde, looking ready to throw her notebook at her head but Bela ignored her sister's ire and addressed Nicole instead.
"What are you studying?"
"I uh- just some basic anatomy concepts. Thought it would be a good idea to start with the things that the older books in the castle don't cover."
Bela only hummed, grabbed an ornate chair nearby, and plopped herself at the desk, opposite from the pair. Daniela mimicked her sister, but instead chose to sit down right by Nicole on the small couch. It took more willpower than she would admit not to glue herself to Cassandra's side when Daniela's face came uncomfortably close so she could look over the book's diagrams. She stood still as a statue though. After a couple seconds of silence and Nicole trying to figure out what she was supposed to do, Daniela drew her head back, looking at her with what was possibly the most serious expression she had seen on the youngest sister.
"You do realize we're not going to hurt you right? How could we lay a finger on our dear sister's lover hmm?"
Nicole's breath caught in her throat. She wasn't sure if it was due to the word used to describe her or how Daniela apparently knew that she was utterly terrified of her. Cassandra sighed beside her and, seeming to at least partially read Nicole's thoughts, clarified:
"Your heartbeat."
Oh. Yeah. Yeah her heart was beating a million miles an hour. And apparently the other three vampiric occupants of the room were able to hear it loud and clear. It did very little to ease her mind.
"Please do calm down, it feels like someone is having drumming lessons. Bad ones," Bela complained, head resting in one of her hands like she was already bored.
"Then shove a sock in your ears," Cassandra snapped.
Bela simply leaned back in her seat and stretched her arms above her head. "And risk not hearing my beloved sisters sing along to some pop song?"
Cassandra shut her mouth, a blush now slowly spreading across her cheeks while Daniela burst out into laughter. Even Nicole couldn't help betraying the brunette and letting out a giggle.
"I didn't know you could sing."
"I can't."
"Au contraire dear Cassie! Should I remind you of the last time Dragostea din tei came on the radio? The pathos!" Daniela reached over Nicole's lap to lightly shake her sister's knee through her giggles.
Cassandra only let out a long groan, face now hidden in her palms. "I hate you both."
"Mhm, we love you too," came Bela's reply, accompanied by a chuckle.
Nicole couldn't keep a small laugh while she snaked her arm behind the brunette to show some form of support against the merciless assailants. Maybe not a complete betrayal.
The scene really had something deep within her heart aching beautifully. It reminded her of the countless times she and Alex would mercilessly tease each other, but still have each other's backs through thick and thin. And for this familiarity to come from people that any sane person would consider bloodthirsty monsters? Hell, maybe they should start considering her a monster too, for the only word she could use to describe them in that moment was endearing.
"So," Bela lightly clapped her gloved hands. "Now that your pulse isn't giving me a headache anymore, what are we doing?"
She had a confident smirk on her face, but her eyes betrayed curiosity. Same for Daniela and, although mixed with a hint of annoyance, Cassandra. She opened the book in front of her, one of general human anatomy, and decided that the digestive system would be a good enough starting point.
---
Their little impromptu lesson didn't last more than two hours. Two hours that proved to Nicole just how oddly human all three sisters can be. Of course she had gotten familiar with Cassandra, intimately so, but the other two still felt like two looming monsters hiding in the shadows. At least up until now.
Bela seemed oddly intrigued by Nicole's explanation, although unlike Cassandra, she seemed to view it more like a story than anything. Daniela seemed slightly more interested, asking questions here and there and even starting to giggle like a middle schooler when they got to the rectum section. That got an eye roll from the other two. Nicole just laughed, finally understanding Mrs Hawkins, her private biology teacher from before she was allowed to step foot in any public school.
After they were done, Bela simply stood up and bid them good night. Danila instead excitedly proposed the skeletal system for next time and picked up the books she abandoned earlier. Then, with a small tower of tomes she went through a door tucked at the very back of the room. Her study, Cassandra had pointed out as they made their way out of the library.
"I didn't know your sisters were interested in medicine too." Nicole kept her voice low, almost as if talking too loudly would disturb the shadowy hallways.
"More or less. Daniela likes it and has a bit of hands-on practice but she has her nose in romance novels more often than not. Bela finds it interesting but botany is what she really loves. That and classic lit." She added the last part with a grimace and Nicole had to wonder which author had offended her personally.
Before she could continue that train of thought though, her gaze moved to the windows, the cloudless sky beyond thick glass panels full of twinkling stars. Her mind kept going back to a few hours earlier and at what Daniela had said. Lover. Did Cassandra truly see her as one or was the youngest sister just being her over the top self. Did she see Cassandra this way? Nicole had not allowed herself to dwell on that up until now, the idea that the brunette saw her as more than an over glorified lab partner with whom she occasionally scratched an itch seemed almost laughable. But the small gestures of affection shown in ways Cassandra seemed to know best were undeniably there. And the familiar flutter in her chest at each of said gestures was also undeniably there.
"What's wrong?"
Cassandra's voice, accompanied by the slight echo through the empty hallway, snapped Nicole out of her thoughts.
"Oh um- nothing." She sounded as convincing as someone trying to sell you a fork while showing you a spoon.
And Cassandra didn't seem to buy it. She moved in front of the redhead, walking backwards with no concern over possible furniture to collide into along the way.
"You always get this… face when something's bothering you."
"I do not-" the indignation in her tone was weak, little more than an attempt to change the subject.
"Mhmm you do. You normally look focused. Kind of like, if someone tried to scare you by throwing an eyeball at you, you'd laugh." She would. "Now? Now you look like a rabbit that has no time to run and is just laying low hoping whatever's hunting it passes by."
Nicole shut up for a moment, only looking at the brunette in front of her incredulously. Maybe she was far more attentive than she gave her credit for.
"Uh. Just thinking." At a raised dark eyebrow, the no shit went unsaid, so Nicole tried to elaborate. "About earlier. When we were with your sisters and Daniela uh- Daniela called me your lover."
Saying that the words felt awkward on her tongue was close to the year's biggest understatement. It felt like pulling out teeth would be an easier task. Nicole had never been good with her words, having learned since childhood to keep her mouth shut. But the fact that Cassandra seemed to share her struggle brought some semblance of comfort.
"And?" As if they were talking about the weather.
"And… was she right in describing me as such?"
She couldn't help a small gulp when the brunette stopped walking, looking at her with a frown. Any sane person would be at the very least somewhat afraid in this situation. Sanity however was scarce these days as Nicole was afraid, though not of the bodily harm that may come from her inquiry, but rather of Cassandra's answer.
"Nicole, your tongue has been in my mouth." Amongst many other places.
The redhead's cheeks turned a slight shade of crimson and she mumbled for an answer. She wasn't sure how to tell her that sleeping together did not automatically make them lovers. But then again, Cassandra's thoughts remained a mystery more than anything.
Thankfully the brunette took the metaphorical reins of the conversation and stepped forward. She wrapped her hands around Nicole's arms, gentler than one would imagine possible from her, and bent down to whisper no more than an inch away from her ear.
"I'll have you know, I'm not particularly fond of letting anyone I don't deem important touch me. Especially not the way you do."
The words made something flutter in Nicole's chest, an unfamiliar and comforting warmth. Said warmth got chipped away at the slightest bit when Cassandra pulled back to look her in the eyes.
"Should I take it that it's not mutual then?" Cassandra's tone was nonchalant, almost as if she didn't truly care about the answer. She could keep doing whatever she wanted either way, afterall who was going to stop her? But to someone who got familiar with all her small quirks and habits, the waver in her voice was more than clear.
"No." The world slipped from her lips with no hesitation.
No hesitation, because the more she thought about it, and she didn't need to think a lot mind you, the more Nicole realized that she couldn't remember a time when she felt the way she did here. Sure the initial threat of death looming over her head was anything but pleasant, but once that melted into affection and nights spent in Cassandra's arms the thought of leaving didn't as much as graze her mind.
"No, no. It is," she repeated, more certainty making its way into her tone.
At that Cassandra smiled. A small, almost shy one would say if they knew her well enough, smile. Her shoulders seemed to lose some of their tension when she leaned down again, her lips stopping not even an inch away. Nicole wasted no time leaning forward, their mouths meeting in a kiss that mixed softness and need beautifully. Their lips slid against each other until, surprisingly, it was Cassandra to pull back and sigh.
"Come sleep, we have some cutting up to do in the morning."
Nicole frowned. "Tomorrow? Wasn't that supposed to be due in a few days?"
A devilish grin appeared on black lips, fangs shimmering ominously in the low light. "Bela caught a foolish man-thing sneaking around the forest on the castle grounds. She's really excited to turn this one into a nice steak."
The redhead only let out an oh in acknowledgement. Foolish indeed. At least they could finally put into practice a few autopsy tricks Nicole had been itching to show her.
She let herself be guided back to Cassandra's chambers and into her bed, that she had grown intimately familiar with. The last thing she felt before falling asleep was the brunette's cool skin, pressed against her own. A welcomed comfort among the myriad of soft pillows that surrounded them. Nicole wondered briefly if being undead meant it was hard to keep yourself warm, but the thought quickly slipped away as she fell into a dreamless sleep.

Make Your Choice - Megatron x reader x Starscream (TFP)
Word count: 2,621 Warnings: angst, conflicting feelings, major character death A/n:  Finished this in one day 9/21/19 at 11:01 PM (holy heck, that was a long time ago). I read pages 140-144 in Transformers Exodus. I never thought I’d write something that’s even slightly Megatron x reader, but here I am. But this oneshot turned out good.
Tumblr media
"Where is he?" You searched the dark corridor of Nemesis for a friend.
As a Decepticon you served under Megatron, and Starscream at times. You were lucky enough to be close to both of them. Although Decepticons would never admit to having friends, you called them this secretly.
You were kind to everyone, even those you didn't know. It hurt you to think of anyone in pain. The majority of the Decepticons knew this, and it was miraculously pardoned thus you were given tasks that required no violence. Perhaps it was your soft words and consideration that made this so, finding a soft spot in the seemingly merciless Megatron. Starscream also respected this when he was in control for about three years.
It was very possible someone would question why you were a Decepticon with your nature being closer to an Autobot. This had occurred to you before, but you hoped to change the Decepticons. If everyone who was good left the Decepticons, there would be no chance of changing it to good in the future. Plus, most of your friends were on that side.
You looked through a doorway, he wasn't there either. "Where are you, Starscream?" You whispered to yourself. Well, you said friend earlier, but recently your feelings for him were becoming a little... different.
Since you finished some work sooner than you presumed, you now had free time that you intended to spend it with Starscream. Upon coming to a T in the halls, you paused to think of a plan. Snapping your fingers, you rushed in the direction of the medbay, to not waste another second of your time. Maybe Knockout knew where he was. Out of everyone he was the second closest to the second in command. While jogging, you remembered when you first started to develop feely for him.
Despite the fact you were kind-sparked, this didn't mean that you were not immune to frustration. At the point of time Megatron had just left on his journey through space, Starscream attacked a vehicon because he was dissatisfied with their lack of progress. For no good reason, out of anger.
"Hey!" You had barked at him, startling both him and the vehicons. "Don't do that. They did nothing to you."
He examined you with his red optics. A snarl and an un-amused expression decorated his faceplate as his tilted his helm back. Releasing the vehicon whilst shoving him away, he shifted his attention to you. He approached you, in attempt to intimidate you.
Your held your ground.
"And I believe you should be reminded of your place. You are a subordinate, who doesn't even have the fuel tank to draw energon. You don't tell me what to do."
"No! You listen!" When his servos flinched, you stepped forward to grab them to prevent him from attacking you. You shoved your faceplate near his, with barely any space apart. "They're on the same side as you. Don't hurt people for no reason. It's not nice." After your anger faded, you realized how close your face was. Energon rushed through you.
He smirked, which didn't help your flustered look. "Are you blushing, little femme?"
"No!" You stepped away.
You thought a little more and decided you wanted to clear something up before you left. "But you are a good leader. You just need to avoid letting your anger get the best of you. If you make emotional decisions, you might mess up your chance to succeed, like I know you can."
Shock filled his expression, his optics widening and eyebrows lifting at the thought you actually believed in him. He quickly regained his senses. "You mean like you did just now?" He showed teeth while displaying the irony.
You pursed your lips and averted your gaze to the ground. "Yes. Just like that," you mumbled.
And strangely enough, after that you had become very good friends with him and would have many conversations with him. Knockout would occasionally tease you for it.
Another example was before leaving Cybertron, when Megatron first learned of Dark Energon (unbeknownst to you and Megatron at the time, Starscream already knew of it long before and was attempting to learn more). He privately admitted to you, something you found shocking at the time, that he knew it was unwise to use the Dark Energon due to its unknown and most likely dangerous properties. Yet he felt it necessary to end the war. He, the gladiator, was tired of fighting. It nearly melted your spark and made you want to hug him in order to make him feel better. Then he said that maybe he would finally defeat the "treacherous Optimus Prime," which then caused you to want to call him an idiot since you knew Optimus never betrayed Megatron.
You had mixed emotions like that. If you wanted someone to be the best version of themselves and to be their friend, their flaws and evil mistakes made you upset for that same reason. This mostly fell under your emotions about Megatron or Starscream.
Your thoughts were put to an end when you reached your destination. Without missing a beat, you opened the door and marched right in.
"(Y/n)! Did you need repairs?" Knockout picked up one of the tools he was organizing.
"Hey, Knockout! No. I was wondering if you knew where Starscream was," you explained.
He chuckled, his finish reflecting what little light there was in the room. "Of course you came here to ask where your boyfriend was."
You stiffened. "He's not my boyfriend, we're just friends."
"You could've fooled me." The mech lifted his optic ridge, clearly not convinced.
"Do you know where he is?" You cut to the point again, wanting to leave the awkward conversation.
"I may," he answered wistfully, "but you may have to give me some more buffing solution as payment."
"But I just gave you some yesterday. In fact, I think you almost always get it from me, and I never ask for anything in return. By the time I get you more I'll have to go back to work."
"Just joking. He's heading to the energon supplies to check inventory." Knockout didn't even give you a glance as he picked up a buffer in the corner and spun the correct pad onto it. "Make sure you remember to propose to him."
"Knockout," you drew out his name in annoyance, almost out the door.
"Just kidding."
You rolled your eyes, mentally forgave him, and bolted to the direction of the energon stock. The clanging of your pedes hitting the floor slowed and came to a halt when the entrance was just on your right.
"Starscream?" You stuck your helm in and searched. Finally, your optics locked onto the thin seeker, with sharp features and expressive wings. He looked to you with surprise, his long digit hovering over the control panel that contained information on how much energon there was, how much was used in the previous month, and the chart of how much energon was found compared to other points throughout time on Earth.
"(Y/n)? Aren't you supposed to be organizing files right now?" He inquired.
"I was done early." You hopped into the room as the door slid closed behind you. It was now dark, except for the illumination from the energon. The way it dimly shown on him and cast shadows on the edges of his figure made him look even more attractive. You shifted and swatted away the thoughts in your head.
"So, what are you up to?"
"Nothing much," he groaned, waving his servo. "I was simply accessing the inventory to find if we had enough and needed to lower rations."
"Hmm. From what I read in reports, it's getting harder to find energon, but we found a good stock recently."
"Yes. I saw that on the chart." He nodded to the glowing screen.
Before you could stop yourself, you began admiring his wings. Then your gaze shifted to a part that wasn't quite as smooth as the rest.
"What's that scratch on your wing?" You exclaimed when you finally noticed it.
He bit his lip, looked to it, and shrugged. "I flew too low and my wing got clipped by a tree."
Studying the scrapes, you delicately traced your fingers on it. He winced in pain and reached to shove it away, but stopped when you flinched away on your own after seeing his reaction.
Letting, your servo fall softly onto the undamaged surface. His wings relaxed in please and a smile crept onto his face. You gently rubbed the spot below it and held his jaw with your other servo. He seemed to melt at your touch and closed his optics. His arms snaked their way around your waist.
His optics flickered open again and stared at you with an emotion you had never seen present in them before... love. Without thinking or even considering the consequences of it, you began to close the distance between your lips and his. However you were cut off when light filled the room coming from the door.
You both turned your heads to see who it was. The expectation was that it was just a vehicon, however it was anyone but a simple minion. It was Megatron himself.
You both stepped back. What was he doing there? He was probably either looking for you or Starscream. You passed some vehicons on the way, so he could have definitely inquired where you were from them, if you were indeed the one he was seeking to find.
When he noticed you and Starscream together, and not just that, but that you were having... erm, a moment, his face twisted from a hurt shocked to anger.
"What have we here?" He marched in, servos behind his back. The door closed, blocking the light once more. You weren't exactly sure why he was so furious, he had never been that mad at you before.
"Well," Starscream stumbled on his words and shrunk back. "You see-"
"Trying to steal yet another thing from me!" He exploded at the seeker. He took the second in command's neck in his hand and held him in the air.
"Megatron! What are you doing?!" It made no sense, why he was just suddenly deciding to kill Starscream. Had he tried to kill him recently? What did he mean 'steal'?
"What are you... Talking... About?" Starscream gasped with his legs dangling.
"(Y/n)," he turned to you. You flinched back, yet noticed how his voice was softer. "Be my sparkmate."
This thoroughly confused you and sent a chill through your frame. "What?! No."
A mix of despair, anger, and desperation showed on his faceplate.
Deciding to elaborate you started carefully, "Why? I thought we were just friends. I thought of us as just friends." You had nothing against him. You cared about him, but never thought of it in a different way. Perhaps you could have explained more, although in your baffled state, you couldn't get out much.
"Those years in space," the leader of the Decepticons began, "it was so lonely I once thought I would lose my mind. The only two things that kept me going and what made me able to live after every near-death experience are my desire to extinguish Optimus and to be with you. You somehow make everything better and chase away darkness and solitude." A blade launched from above his hand and he aimed it for the dangling Cybertronian in his hand. "I want you to always be by my side. Be my sparkmate, or Starscream dies."
You couldn't believe it, well, maybe you could considering how violent he was and how many other times he came close to killing Starscream. The Decepticon leader had even expressed fear you'd leave him for someone else before. Yet, you had assumed that it was platonic and never guessed this would happen.
"Please," you pleaded, "Don't terminate him. I know you have kindness in your spark, and it is not weakness, it is a virtue. Please. Starscream has always been useful to you. For me?" You held your servos together, your sad optics sparkled.
This seemed to make him consider, as he started to reflect your sadness then shook it away. Replaced with anger of how greatly you cared for his second in command that seemed to undermine everything he did. "No. Only if you become my sparkmate."
The seeker decided to take matters into his own servos and aimed the red missile on his arm while distracted. Megatron noticed and tore it and the other off and let then drop to the floor with Starscream wailing in pain.
You shook your head in horror, still in disbelief of what was happening. "Why are you doi-"
"I CAN'T LOSE YOU TO STARSCREAM!" He raised the sword. "And now he won't keep you from me anymore!"
"NO!" You screamed. Panic surged through you. This couldn't happen, you couldn't lose Starscream. You just couldn't. You didn't want him to die. If he were to die, you would never see or talk to him again, and it was something you could never afford.
Without thinking, you lunged forward and converted your servo to a blade. Only focusing on saving Starscream, you slashed at the one threatening his well-being.
Then time slowed. Your optics widened. You stumbled back with energon stained on the sharp edge. Megatron opened his mouth, yet nothing came out as his grip loosened and he fell to the ground. His helm nearly falling off of his body, with almost all severed off. Your mouth hung open watching the glowing blue liquid puddle onto the floor, seeming to form a lake. He gave the saddest look you've ever seen, making you want to scream as he seemed to stare right into your spark, before his scarlet optics flickered and the life faded from them.
Then the gravity of what you did. You stared at the blade, then your dead friend.
"NO! What am I doing? Why did I want to hurt you?!" You screamed. Switching back to your hand, feeling the energon drip into your parts, as you ran forward and held Megatron. You answered your own questioned, "It was to save Starscream, but why did you make me do that?! I didn't wanna hurt you. I'm supposed to be a friend, be nice. I just wanna... wanted to be your friend." You changed the word since Megatron was now no more. You wrapped your armed around him in a hug. Overcome by grief. Then anger resurfaced.
"Stupid head! Why do you have to be like this? Why do you have to be an evil overlord? I wanted to be friends. I care about you!" Then you sank back into sadness.
With a sigh, you attempt to pull yourself together. He was set to the side and you stood up, energon dripping off of you.
This whole time, Starscream, who had crawled away when he was first released, watched you. He really had no idea what to do or how to help you. All he knew was that you probably needed to be left alone at that moment, thus he stood there. Although he was flattered that you, as a pacifist, would kill to save him, he hated that you were unhappy. He waited until a few nanoklicks after you stood in silence.
"All hail Starscream?" He hesitantly questioned, his wings giving a shrug. He clearly didn't want to bother you in such an emotional state, although still desired to know if he'd be leading the Decepticons.
With a small smile creeping to your lips, you nodded while trying to move on from what happened. "Yes. All hail Starscream."

Humans are Space Orcs, “Group Project.”
Alright everyone, still working on the lecture series, but I also wanted to get some ideas.
What parts of my worldbuilding do you want me to continue with?
What do you want to know more about?”
What story lines do you think I have left unfinished?
And are there any parts of the timeline you want to hear more about? (I was thinking about doing a story on how Adam was even given a ship in the first place) things like that.
I would find your feedback very helpful if you could :) at the very least it will help me get through my writing slump.
Almost six months.
Six months od doctor Krill’s lecture series and they still felt as if they didn’t understand humans anymore than they had when they first started. Despite months and months of research, and papers, none of them had managed to get a grade on an assignment that was higher than a C -- Dr. krill was using what he called the human letter grading system to give them some more experiences that would help them bond with humans, and boy were they bonding with the humans who just couldn’t seem to get it right.
It wasn’t that Dr. krill was an unfair teacher, it was just that most of them always managed to be wrong in some massive and obvious way about humans. For example, when writing a paper about how humans cannot see in the dark and would be likely not to survive on a dark planet, but then potentially forgetting about all the humans who survived being completely blind Everything you could say about humans was generally untrue for another human.
Humans have an extreme sense of survival however they seem prone on tossing  themselves from high places just for the fun of it.
Humans were both the most survival oriented and the most danger prone species in the entire universe, and that let to some very strange stories that often seemed as if they couldn’t possibly be true, but often turned out to be true anyway.
Either way, the class had been both difficult and exciting, and now they were approaching the end of the semester, and Dr. Krill had promised them something very special to go along with their group project.
They all waited nervously in their predetermined groups watching as Dr. Krill stepped into the room.
He said something to his TA and then turned to his projector to fiddle around for a moment.
When the lights blinked overhead this time.
Dr. krill trend to look at the class, “Understanding that we are approaching our last few weeks of class, I have decided to do something a bit special for all of you. To prepare you for the real world of working with humans. I understand that all of you have been working hard despite your abysmal grades, and have decided to do something that human schools do when just such a thing occurs….. Grading on a curve. I certainly didn’t expect any of you to understand humans any better after all of this was over, so this week, I am going to give your real opportunities for some real learning.”
He looked around the room rather smug, “First of all, I want to introduce you to a REAL life earth predator.”
Somehow, in some way, Krill made a sharp whistling noise, and out of the darkness of one of the entrances, their came the soft thudding of footsteps…. Four of them to be precise.
When the furry animal raced into the room the entire class went into a state of panic. Aliens leaped up on their desks and screamed. Vrul inflated and began floating towards the ceiling, all was chaos as the large fuzzy creature raced around the perimeter of the room and then straight towards Dr. krill himself.
More screaming.
“Waffles Sit!” The animal skidded to a stop, and then sat with a soft thump on the floor.
The classroom grew very still as Dr. Krill began to pat the predator’s head.
A pink tongue lolled from it’s mouth past massive white K-9 teeth. Its huge ears swiveled back and forth.
The class slowly began to relax back in their seats as Krill continued to pat the dog, rubbing the fur under its chin so that it raised its head and grumbled deep in it’s throat. Its tail slapped repeatedly against the ground.
“Everyone, I would like to introduce you to one of the staples of a human pack….. A dog.” He continued to pat the animal, as she slid to the ground beside him tail still thumping loudly against the ground, “Waffles was trained by humans for humans, and has the ability to both detect and prevent psychological crisis. As you all know humans are rather prone to mental dysfunction, but this dog is one of the first line defences put in place for a specific human.”
The dog leaned up, and with her long pink tongue, she liked the doctor on the arm.
The class cringed back.
“If you ever want to work with humans, it is likely you will have to work with dogs as well. Any dog that is going to be aboard a human ship will have been vetted for work with other alien races. They will be friendly, and they will calm. Waffles has been around humans her entire life, and around aliens for over two years which is a little less than half of her life.”
He turned to look at the room, “I will give a hundred points of Extra credit to anyone who is brave enough to come down here and pet her.”
There was silence in the room.
No one moved an inch.
Off in the corner a Tesraki shifted nervously in his seat.
He had the lowest grade in the class and he knew it, but a hundred point os extra credit would bring him solidly up a letter grade or two…. but …. It’s teeth were so big, and it probably weighed as much as he did.
It was the look that Dr. Krill gave him that finally urged him onward. Dr. Krill knew, and was, surprisingly, trying to help him.
Knees shaking and hands about to tremble off the end of his wrists, the Tesraki stood, and made his slow way across the room. His ears were plastered flat against his head and his hands only shook worse. The dog grew larger and larger in his vision until she was sitting right before him. Even sitting down she was only a foot and a half shorter than he was, and the panic he was feeling was unbelievable.
He looked into her eyes, and she shifted forward on her paws, snout pushing towards him. He backed away and the entire class gasped. She rocked back on her feet and gently lowered herself to the ground, looking up at him with wide brown eyes.
When he didn’t move she slowly rolled until she had flipped over on her back, looking up at him with her head tilted
A tooth poked out from under her lip, and her tail beat against the ground.
“Look at that!” krill exclaimed, “That’s a submissive pose she would use on a human, she wants you to rub her chest and belly, go on, she’s giving your permission.”
Heart hammering in his ears, he leaned down, and with trembling fingers patted the coarse fur on her belly. She made a grumbling noise and he leaped back, but Dr. Krill encouraged him on saying that it was a good thing, and so he continued. The animal kicked her leg a couple of times and the Tesraki felt his entire body tingle with exhilaration.
He was…. He was petting a dangerous earth animal, just like the humans would!
Eventually he was dismissed back to his seat, and the dog rolled over onto her stomach, resting her head on her paws, which she began to lick absently, large ears still perked.
Dr Krill turned to look at them, “But of course this class it primarily about humans, is it not, and I strongly believe that there is really only one way to teach someone how to interact with humans properly….” he looked around at all of them, “And that, is by experience.”
The class shifted in their seats with exclamations of surprise, and from down one of the hallways they heard a sharp repeated thudding. The beat was so regular and rhythmic it managed to make many of the Vrul students dizzy and confused, nearly lolling out of their seats.
Dr Krill stood firm two hands on hips, two hands crossed over his chest.
And that is when the column of humans marched into the room in perfect time with each other, their botos hitting the floor such that the seats about them seemed to rattle. The vrul could barely keep in their seats and the other students leaned forward in awe.
Most of the humans wore strange clothing in a black and greyblue pattern all over their bodies, while the human at the front wore light grey and a strange adornment atop his head. The front of his chest glittered with small colorful ribbons and little glittering symbols though no one could have been sure what they meant.
The line of humans drew to the front of the room and then stopped.
“LEFT FACE!”
The group turned in unison with the sharp rattling of boots on the floor.”
“ATTENTION!” Their bodies snapped into position, hands raised to their temples as they looked forward perfectly still.” “AT EASE.”
The group of humans, together, fell back into a posture of relative relaxation. Feet spread, hands clasped gently behind their backs, and there they stood as Doctor Krill moved to stand next to them, “Well class, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the Omen’s Alpha team. These marines have trained for years in ground combat for most of their careers. IF there is ever a problem on your planet, this is likely who the humans will send as reinforcements.”
He turned to the last human, the one with the shiny uniform, “And it is my pleasure to introduce our ship’s admiral, who graciously agreed to come and bring his men today. I think you will recognize him from your textbooks.”
When the human removed his hat and turned to face them, there was a shocked muttering. They knew him from their textbooks, as HE was the very template for the classic anatomical diagram that adorned many of the pages in their textbooks.
It was essentially his system that they were examining whenever they discussed the systems of the human body.
“A couple of things I would like you all to note here, and those are the highly social structure in which humans operate. This structure includes a strict hierarchy that humans take pains to make known. The Single Star on the Admiral’s shoulder marks him as the highest ranking human in this room. He outranks me, these other humans and all of you as civilians. In the human world, he is to be listened to, and his orders to be obeyed. In certain cases humans will overlook the intelligence of what someone is saying, if they are of a higher rank in worry of social repercussion.”
He turned to walk towards the marines still standing in their straight line, “They rank in order from this symbol down to this symbol and each of them has an important task to preform. In the early days of our meeting humans, this strict social hierarchy was enough to make some assume that humans were in possession of some sort of hive mind. However, this is clearly not the case. Humans do not have a hive mind, but they do possess a social structure so rigid in some cases that it may seem like it. I would also like to note the diversity in human appearance. The only other species that we have seen with even remotely comparable diversity in facial, tonal, and physical structure are either the Drev, or the Tesraki.”
He turned to look at the groups and his antenna buzzed with amusement, “Now, in your groups, I want you all to pick one of the marines to come join you, and then for the rest of the class, I would like you to come up with a principal about humans to demonstrate at the end of the lecture.” he pointed to one of the first groups, “pick a human.”
There was some slight shuffling and discussion as they tried to determine which human would be best. In the end they went for the smallest human hoping beyond hope that they would be the least aggressive.
It was a real pity that they didn’t understand the rule about short humans, and maverick, in an attempt to get to her group, ignored all the rules of decorum and simply stepped up onto the desks clambering over with great dexterity until she plopped herself down in a seat in the middle of the group turning to look at them, “Yo.” She said, rather un ironically as they stared at each other in shock.
The other humans were quickly divided out and went to sit with their groups mostly enjoying being the center of attention.
There was one less marine than they needed, so the highest ranking human handed his hat to the dog sitting on the floor and walked over to slide into a seat with them, showing his teeth in a gesture that was supposed to be friendly.
All around the room chattering steadily grew as the aliens began asking the humans quick fire questions which some of the marines found hard to keep up with.
When asked a question Ramirez simply shook his head, “You know what you guys probably know way more about humans that me. I’m not a doctor, or anything else. I am a marine, I know how to do like four things effectively, I call them the four Fs, Fight, Fun, Food, and er well you get the picture.”
Maverick was having a very amusing time explaining teeth to the aliens, albeit rather inaccurately considering that teeth weren’t actually bone but a mixture of enamel covered dentine, but Krill let it go on for the factor of amusement.”
The nervous members of the admiral’s group had already been lulled into a sense of ease at the man’s friendly and relaxing demeanor, and he was attempting to do his best at explaining a question given to him by one of the aliens, and was doing a better job than the marines at taking their questions seriously.
“Well you see, when it comes to humans you are always going to be relatively safe. Over the past thousands of years, access to soft cooked foods have caused our jaws to grow relatively small and weak leaving little room for our teeth. So most humans don’t like food that is difficult to eat. We aren’t impressive enough predators that we can just strip flesh from bone. Plus thats a great way to catch diseases, furthermore, our diets and the way we eat really had to change as our vocal cords moved further up in our throats. Sure this gave us the ability to speak and mimic almost any alien language known, but it also made us very prone to choking on our own food.”
He sighed, “I remember this one time when I was five and I choked on a hard candy, scariest moment of my life probably, or at least in the top ten. If you don’t know what choking is, its when something gets stuck in your airway blocking your ability to breath and you die from oxygen loss, I know a horrible way to die.”
The conversations continued all around the room until there was only twenty minutes left in class, and he called a stop so that the groups could demonstrate a human principle that they had learned.
The first group brought Maverick up and one of the other students presented her with a rock No one was really sure why he had the rock, but the fact that it had big eyeballs drawn on it was enough for her to happily accept the gift and declare its name to be “The Boulder.” The class was surprised to find that it took such little effort for a human to pack bond with something, but the fact that she held the rock in two hands and occasionally stroked a finger down it was clear enough evidence that it was true.
The other students demonstrated a human’s depth perception by throwing an object and watching as Ramirez leaped out over the desks, hands stretched out to catch the object mid fly before landing back on the ground. The precision that it required to do that left the class very very impressed.
Someone else had a human try to identify what something was based on it’s smell, and he accurately guessed the difference between Vrull Texraki and Runid just based on their smell. They even brought in one of the other humans to which the test subject exclaimed,  “Don’t tell me it’s Ramirez and his bitch ass. I would know those fumes anywhere.”
One of the humans managed to demonstrate a very impressive climbing ability, and another one of the marines was pleased to demonstrate a human’s advanced vestibular sense by doing a backflip off of one of the desks. He tried to do it twice, but tripped upon anding and ended up on his back much to the amusement of the other humans.
That was also a good demonstration of the human’s empathy reflex as the humans winced and were silent for a moment before they began their ridicule.
If they remembered correctly, humans used teasing and humor as social bonding. They would never have made fun of their friend if he had actually been hurt, but the fact that he wasn’t made it clearly acceptable to joke as it let the other humans know that everything was ok.
The last group caught the admiral off guard by saying the word yawn and causing a chain reaction that made its way all around the room until it terminated with the dog, who also yawned, much to the surprise of the students.
Krill watched all of this with interest, keeping an eye on his more motivated students, and the ones who got along best with the humans. He was still trying to get permission from his superiors, but taking a few house students with them on the omen and back to earth would be a great PR move and also a good way to get some of his more invested students an experience that they could really take with them into their careers.
If one thing WAS  clear by the end of the lecture.
It was that Maverick was not going to give up her pet rock any time soon.
