Assistant to the Villain review
Tumblr media
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: humor, fairytales, fun stories, cozy fantasy
I picked this up kind of on a whim and am glad I did. This is the kind of story that's fun to be fun. It's mostly slice-of-life, if said life was as a fairytale villain's secretary. It's a nice light read if you're looking for a funny fantasy. I will say, the book borders on camp but doesn't quite get there, and I think it would definitely be elevated if the author had fully committed and made it campy.
The world this book is set in is very reminisce of your typical fairytale world and has the vibe that fairy godmothers and poison apples are a relatively common thing. Everyone is pretty casual about magic as well, and it does seem to be a little genetic, though also not entirely. The villain is known as The Villain, though he seems more to be a nuisance than someone who's truly evil (heads hanging from ceiling aside).
Our protagonist, Evie, is in the role of managerial assistant to the villain and manages work such as, the best time to steal the king's shipment of gems and ordering new office paper. I liked seeing the mundanities of office life in a villain's layer since it does provide that juxtaposition between what you would expect from an office and the more nefarious things you would expect from a villain. Evie is fairly level-headed about things and does have a good sense of humor, probably necessary when you both work for a villain and when you're probably the clumsiest person in the kingdom. She's fiercely loyal though and more than willing to put in the work to solve a mystery and keep her friends safe.
The Villain is gruff but not mean or grumpy, he's just doesn't have a particularly sunny disposition. He's the kind of villain that thinks buying up all the puppies at the shelter so no one can have cute baby dogs is an evil plan. That being said, he does have more nefarious schemes, but by and large the Villain is mostly interested in doing evil against the king of the country rather than on the individual people. He has a hard time trusting, he's even perpetually suspicious of his own staff, but is generous and fairly forgiving to the people he does let in.
Pretty much all the other characters are more minor characters. There's Rebecka, who oversees the lair workers who has a rivalry with Evie; there's the beast tamer slowly trying to habilitate a dragon; the troll (ogre?) who bakes; and the sparkly healer who enjoys gossiping (I have, unfortunately, forgotten all of their names except Rebecka's, oops). Also there's a toad who communicates with hand written signs and wears a crown. His name is Kingsley.
As mentioned, this is cozy fantasy and largely slice-of-life, so there's not exactly a big plot. There is a traitor within the walls of the villain lair and the characters in the book are working to figure out who it could be. But the stakes are pretty low until perhaps the very end, when the stakes become very real. It's kind of like Legends & Lattes in that sense, where there's definitely A Plot, but most of the story is focused on the day-to-day that surrounds the plot.
Overall I enjoyed this book and thinks it's a nice, light read if you're looking for something fluffy and not too heavy. It's a pretty fun book, but is definitely not very plot heavy.

When you’re drowning in a sea of thrillers that all feel the same, it is nice to find one that is its own little island.
Picture this: You’re checking out some books at your library. The woman at the circulation desk is always so friendly and helpful. She’s a librarian stereotype, for sure, with her hair in a bun and her glasses on a chain. You can’t help but think she must lead a simple, quiet life at home.
But what if she was actually a serial killer?!?!
It’s always the ones you don’t expect!
And if you’re Patricia (that’s Pa-tree-see-ah), a failed novelist just looking to make ends meet at your new library job, you might find the perfectly polished, murderous Margo to be the ideal subject for your next book!
While deliciously wicked doesn’t always work for me, How Can I Help You? sure did! I had a great time being stuck in both characters’ heads and hated having to put this book down. I loved the nods to We Have Always Lived in the Castle (another deliciously wicked hit for me) and actually cared about Margo’s fate for no good reason at all!
This darkly comedic character study was delightfully wicked and so much fun!
I am immensely grateful to Putnam for my copy. All opinions are my own.

This fun, adventurous middle grade novel (the prequel to Escape From Kitty City released last year) is perfect for cat lovers. As for the rest of my middle grade animal fantasy series, The Meer and Pride, will be put on hold for the time being. I will continue to write the series, not to worry, but as of right now my focus must be placed on other projects. I just wanted to let my followers know. Thank you so much for your support and I hope you enjoy this newest cat-tastic read 💞💞

An American In Provence | Jamie Beck
🤩 I Loved this book. I’ve been following Jamie Beck’s photography for a long time. Before France and what her photography has become today. This book is part biography, cookbook, photography and slow living. I particular enjoyed the photography and slow living vibes. Each of Jamie’s photography is a like mini world of its own you get to experience. I found the book equally relaxing and…

Zoey (or Zoe) knows what to draw is a story about a young girl that loves drawing. But one day, Zoe's Imagination, was blank, That means she got no inspiration, what is wrong with her? Will she get back her imagination? And will she find something to draw?
Zoey Knows what to Draw took me two years to put together. I was not happy with the art style and the story (Zoe was going to go on a walkabout with mum to the supermarket, and that's where she finds these super cool-looking markers). I guess you can say I had what Zoey has in this story 😅
Zoey Knows what to Draw! is available to buy on Amazon Book Store.

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

academic bias is so funny because you’ll be reading about the same historical event and one person is like “Despite the troubles that befell his homeland and near constant criticism of the court King Blorbo remained strong in the face of adversity” and the other one is like “after letting his people carry the brunt of his cringefail decisions Blorbo the Shitface refused to listen to any reason and continued to be a warmongering piece of shit. Also he was ugly.”

God of Malice | Rina Kent
📖What a rollercoaster! This book falls under my, “Struggling with a book hangover.” 😂 This was recommended to me and I went in blind. I was both surprised and intrigued 😳😱🫣🧐🤩It didn’t end at all how I imagined. I didn’t even think this had a HEA, but to my surprised it did. 📖It’s my first time reading anything from this author and it won’t be my last. I will definitely be reading more. This…
