"Have they been dating that long?' Bruce questioned, taking off his cowl.

'I didn't even know he was seeing someone. What if she's from the League?'

"Her personality changed so much." Dick spoke, redressing into civilian clothes, "Is she sane?"

"Actually, it's not that much different than what B does when he has to go out." Tim sighed.

Bruce and Dick turned to him quickly.

"What do you mean?" Bruce demanded, "I don't act like that!"

"You turn into 'Brucie' the playboy billionaire at galas and for the board memebers, but then you come down here and you turn into the 'Big Bad Bat'." Tim rebuffed.

"Replacement's got a point." Jason commented, "You can switch personalities at the drop of a hat, too."

"I was trained!" Bruce growled.

"So was your son; you don't see him coddling up the hoards of girls that follow him. He looks like he would rather skewer the girls at school and you know he could." Jason sighed.

"So, what makes this girl different?" Dick asked.

Tim sat at the computer and looked up Marinette. He cross-referenced Damian and the school to get more information.

"I'm assuming he hid his own personal file on the bat computer or it's on his own." Tim spoke, "She's a foreign exchange student on a scholarship through the Wayne foundation. Her parents are bakers, which are extremely well known, and she's from Paris. She's here for fashion design."

"Paris is the fashion capitol of the world." Bruce stated, "Why would she come here?"

"Seems she was severely bullied." Dick announced, "She has restrainign orders on a lot of people. Some of them have well known parents and others are serving time in a detention center. From the look of this article, she knows a lot of people. Her bully lied about them and she pleaded with her classmates to see reason. She was later hospitalized and then she went all out. She made calls to her connections and left the school. She was homeschooled for a bit and applied to come here. During that time, she was cyber bullied and stalked. They blamed her for the bully manipulating them and for the rug being pulled from under them."

"Let me get this straight! That girl who took out the Joker was bullied by a liar. She tried to get her classmates to see she was lying but got bullied by all of them. When they found out, they cyber bullied her because they were upset? She left the City of Love to come here? Is that what you're saying?" Jason shouted.

"That's what it looks like." Tim whispered.

Bruce remained silent. They all did.

"So, back to my bet." Jason spoke, after recovering, "How long til she's a Wayne thru the brat? After that display, I'd be shocked if he didn't try. Brat's not one to play the damsel in distress."

"Robin isn't emotionally prepared." Bruce declared.

"When isn't he?" Tim scoffed.

"My point exactly." Jason smirked.

"Have faith in him." Bruce sighed.

Jason just rolled his eyes.

As they exited the Bat Cave, they spotted Damian entering through the front door.

"So, when are your prosing, Brat?" Jason asked.

"Tomorrow afternoon." Damian declared, heading up the stairs.

The Waynes' stared at him in shock.

"Called it!" Jason cackled.

"Are you sure?" Bruce asked, "How long have you been dating?"

"Five months." Damian spoke, continuing his way to the second floor.

"Damian-" Dick spoke.

"Have you pick out a ring?" Jason questioned.

"I am about to begin my search online. She deserves the best one and I can visit the stores later to see if the appearance is just as adequate." the youngest Wayne announced, leaving the others stunned.

Napoleon and Josephine

I love them, they are my favourite couple ever since I studied French history at middle school. I know that she probably didn't love him at the beginning of the marriage, they cheated on each other and broke up, but I also know that they remained good friends after the divorce, and I like to think that they might have cleared up and gotten back together, if an afterlife exists (I hope so). I know that I probably have strange ideas, because the majority of people doesn't ship real people or people dead for 200 years.

Sorry for this outburst, but I didn't know any other place to express myself, I was a bit afraid of other people's judgments😅

Ps. I think that "Summertime Sadness" by Lana Del Rey is good for them (or maybe "I wanna be yours" by Arctic Monkeys)

3/5 stars I was expecting this book to be shorter. Although I will say that this is by far one of my favorite retellings of the Queen of Heart's origin story. We get a more in-depth picture as to why the Queen of Hearts came to be.

Summary: Cath is being courted by the King, which he had to reluctantly accept due to the pressure of her parents. Meanwhile, she is dealing with the growing tension she has had since meeting Jest, as well as dealing with the number of Jabberwock attacks. She tries to try and escape marrying the King by entering a baking contest in order to win enough money to open her own bakery. This results in a disaster and the contest is canceled. She finds out that she's in love with Jest at the same time she finds out that he is a high-ranking military official for the White Queen.

SPOILERS AHEAD -

[ His mission is to steal Cath's heart (the passionate heart of the Queen of Hearts) to end the war. Cath crosses the land of Chess to be queen without marrying the King. To enter, they have to pay a price, which is to see prophecies that reveal their futures. When Jest dies, Raven becomes a murderer, Cath becomes a pitiless Queen of Hearts, and Hatta goes mad. They try to escape it but ultimately fail. They kill the Jabberwocky, who turns out to be Lady Peter. Jest is decapitated by Peter as an act of revenge. Cath makes a pact with the Three Sisters: they will bring Peter to Cath in exchange for the heart of a queen. She marries the King to obtain the heart and pay the price. They take her heart, and she immediately orders Peter to be decapitated. This is carried out by Raven, bringing all the prophecies to completion.

Review: One of my favorite aspects of this book is how the characters were depicted. Some of the best examples were from Cath and Jest. Jest was charming, intriguing, and bold. His character alongside Hatta provided a lot of serious and jarring scenes, as well as hilarious ones. At times, it's hard to do both, especially when you see them initially introduced as comic relief. Cath, on the other hand, was sweet and full of dreams. As the lies start to build up, we see the shift begin to happen, especially as she is fooling the King. By the end, it isn't as surprising to see how she became the unforgiving Queen of Hearts. I didn't necessarily hate any of the characters, as they all had their own intentions behind their actions.

Some of the things I didn't like about this book were the instant love between Jest and Cath. as well as how convoluted and twisted it got towards the middle. I felt that there really wasn't that much development in terms of how Jest and Cath fell in love (this may be more of a me thing since I was focused on understanding the worldbuilding). Also, the introduction of the Land of Chess and the Three Sisters threw me off and left me with a lot to process alongside what I already understood about the worldbuilding.

I would recommend this book but only if I was aware that the person liked villain origin stories or fairytale retellings. It's not a bad book, but it's also not the best book Marissa Meyer has ever written.

In der Buchbubble scheint das Trope »Instant Love« sehr unbeliebt zu sein, aber ich habe auch schon Bücher gelesen, in denen das auftauchte. In einem meiner älteren Bücher habe ich das auch verwendet und mir damals gar nicht viel dabei gedacht.

Ich selbst habe eine Liebe auf den ersten Blick noch nie erlebt, was vermutlich damit zusammenhängt, dass ich ein bisschen demisexuell bin. Demisexualität bedeutet, dass man erst eine emotionale Bindung und Beziehung zu einer Person aufbauen muss, bevor man sich romantisch und/oder sexuell zu ihr hingezogen fühlt.
