RIP Martha Wayne. As a Jewish mother you would have loved having Clark as a son in law because he’s never more than two seconds away, is always willing to help out around the house, and has 0 excuses for not visiting.

So, I found out that, as of The Penguin #7 (from February 2024), Martha Wayne has been confirmed to celebrate Hanukkah.
Before, DC had accidentally made her Jewish through the Kanes, but didn’t seem to realize it. I personally figured that although she was technically Jewish, she didn’t actually have a particular connection to it. But yeah, apparently she celebrated at least one Jewish holiday. So…Martha Wayne was Jewish and she participated in the culture.
That means Bruce spent his early years in an interfaith family—even if Martha wasn’t religious, he was raised on two different religious practices. Which likely affects his views on religion, authority, and his family relations, and I find that really interesting.
I really want to explore this in a fic somehow, but I’m not quite sure what to write. But yeah.

Some people might remember that Bruce is Jewish, but I don't think people realize to *what level* this whole family is Jewish.
Looking only at the *blood related family members*, Thomas was canonically the only one that was actually Christian (not counting au version of family members I'm talking only about the current main universe versions).
Thomas was Christian.
Martha? Jewish
Hence Bruce- also Jewish.
The grandparents? Also Jewish.
Bruce's uncle (Martha's brother) Jacob (Kate and Beth's dad) was Jewish as well.
Jacob's wife and Bruce's aunt Gabi was also Jewish.
Bruce's twin cousins Kate and Beth? Jewish.
Another cousin of Bruce that her dad was also from the same parents of Martha and Jacob (hence he was also Jewish), aka bette? Also biologically Jewish.
Damian? The son of Bruce (Jewish) and Talia (Muslim) is both of his parents child so he doesn't have a Christian bone in his body. He's the farthest from Christian there is.
Even Helena Wayne the daughter of Bruce is also biologically Jewish.
THIS WHOLE FAMILY EXCEPT THOMAS IS JEWISH.
Have a fun day digesting that.

Harley: Can't believe you’ve got a type, Mistah J.
Joker: I don’t have a type. I only love Batman.
Harley: But you do go for jewish hotties.
Joker: Harley, I do hate to be the bearer of bad news here: but I never loved you.
Harley: Fair. Doesn't change B man being jewish, though. You're going 2 for 2.
Joker: :/ stupid question: how do you know?
Harley: Not once has he actually told you off about planning your christmas capers, that’s because he doesn’t give a shit about that holiday. Now he’s always pissed off in september whenever anyone does anything so all of the rogues have kind of taken to arranging their plans around it. That’s one of my finds. My second find is that he actually told me one time when we were driving to Arkham and I was complaining about the lack of kosher options in there. He was like *puts on Batman’s voice* I will see what I can do. Maybe get you some matzo soup or some babka on the menu. Grrr. I'm Batman.
Joker: That isn’t substantial evidence. I mean good for him, but I eat those things too and I'm not Jewish.
Harley: First of all, you eat those things because I hooked you on them. You’re welcome. Anyway, call him.
Joker calls Batman
Ring
Ring
Batman: Joker, what do you want?
Joker: Are you jewish? Harley says you’re jewish.
Batman: *sighs*
Harley: Oh you know he’s jewish if he has to sigh like that and is about to go on a 40 minute explanation about his roots. You know know.

Interesting detail about the Wayne family picture (the Batman 2022)
Tumblr media
SO FIRST, this picture was taken at Wayne Manor, before they moved to Wayne Tower (for those who didn’t know, Thomas gave their manor to Gotham City to serve as an orphanage when Bruce was 6 years old. It’s where Edward eventually grew up, and where we see Thomas make his speech in the movie.)
What's interesting about this photo, is the fact that we can see a copy of The Zohar on the bookshelf. This implies that the Wayne family (probably more his mother, but again I don't know since in this universe she's an Arkham...) has Jewish heritage and is symbolic as the book deals with themes such as Ego, redemption, darkness and "the true self".
AGAIN, I'm pretty sure it would be Bruce's mother who is Jewish - since the Wayne family has been established as christians (Episcopalian most of the time) and viewed as an extremely old American family in basically every iteration. More like an older version of the Kennedy/Rockerfeller families that hasn't been diluted by multiple heirs.
And I think it's really interesting, maybe Thomas was just interested about studying it ? Or Maybe the IRL owner of the house is jewish ?
But anyways, Bruce is most of the time portrayed as a Christian, who eventually grew up and became an atheist.

hi res, I just finished reading dead man's party, I have to say I'm in love with it! I love Martha, I love jason and everything about it! one of my fave bits was when jason told bruce that he could see his grandmother, he's immediately like 'my mother?' like !!!!! idk something about not being in discussion that Martha IS his grandmother... man I loved it! anyways, I have a question, is there any possibility in the future for us to know Martha's thoughts on clark? would clark be considered a nice jewish boy for bruce bu martha? 😭❤ thanks for sharing your writing with us and also I feel like I've learned a lot of interesting stuff about Judaism, so thanks for that as well
Thank you so much! Yeah, that's definitely something I wanted to emphasize with this fic -- that no matter how alienated from his family Jason feels, how uncertain he feels as Red Hood in Batman's city, Bruce is still his dad and that's still his family. Nothing will change that. He's still invited to Shabbat! Even if he was straight up evil, he'd still be invited to Shabbat.
I think Clark would be considered a very nice polite young man, and Martha would say it's a shame he's not Jewish. She would say this about most of Bruce's potential romantic interests though. If she ever found out Hal was Jewish I'm sure she wouldn't shut up about trying to get them together (I like to think this matters so much to her even though the possibility of having biological kids between two men is...virtually impossible, so being Jewish isn't a requirement per se, but it still is for her!)
Finding Jason a nice Jewish girl is the top priority I think. Bruce already gave her grandkids. Martha has a new mission. And that's to get Jason as reconnected with her side of the family as possible, despite only being Jewish by patrilineal adoption.

Have we had any other comics confirm Martha Wayne being Jewish? Batman/Catwoman isn't canon, so technically this doesn't confirm it in the main continuity, but I was curious if there's another comic that does.

Can I request a Bruce Wayne x Muslim!female reader headcanons ?
here’s some ideas
— > how would he react to her being Muslim
— > Alfred and Bruce learning more about Eid, Ramadan, and traditions/religion in general
thank you ! <33
ok but here's an idea: bruce secretly loves ramadan.
he operates on odd hours, and it can get a bit tricky to find some quality time together. so when he came home home from a long night of batman duties to you eating alone in the kitchen at 5 in the morning, he felt his heart swell. he poured some Cheerios into a bowl and sat next to you and listen to you explain what you were doing in the next month.
you didn't notice it right away, but he started coming home early--earlier to catch you on your suhur. if he's early enough, he'd even wake you up and prepare your meal for you (ok prepare is an overstatement: he heated the food alfred prepped for you earlier that night). he watches you perform your Tarawih prayers, and asks attentive questions about it. you even find him studying the Quran curiously.
but most of all, he'd be there with you to break your fast every chance he gets.
it's truly shocking how much bruce is looking forward to mealtime. he asks you what you feel like having, orders takeouts or asks alfred if he can make it. and the biggest surprise of all, he actually sits down and eats. he doesn't fork through his meal or inhales it while knee-deep in investigative work: he actually sits on the dining table with you and listens and sometimes even talks about whatever's going on that day. but neither you nor alfred wanted to point it out, worried that he might scurry off into his own little corner.
it's the 17th day of ramadan when you finally ask, why the sudden interest?
"my mom used to celebrate yom kippur. i never got to, but she did. it's a bit different, but dinner's always a big deal, and... i don't know, it's nice. it's like havin' that for a whole month."
he shrugs and returns to his chicken and salad, but it knocks the wind out of you. he plays it off like it's nothing, but you see the light in his eyes, and you see how much it means to him-- and how much it means to you to share this with him.

I haven’t found any place where this fits naturally into the break your throne, cut your hair AU, but I was looking up the history and want to share the character thoughts.
I think it would make sense for Janet to have had a bat mitzvah ceremony. It fits her feminist go-getter modern-woman characterization in her few appearances. It also adds to the quiet tragedy of the Drakes spending increasing time away from Gotham and sending their kid to boarding school that her daughter does not have one.
I’m less sure about Martha Wayne, who would be an entire generation older than Janet. I mostly write post-crisis pre-flashpoint era, and I haven’t found much information on the Kanes. We know Martha was involved in charity work and had a strong sense of community service as an adult, but that... doesn’t really tell us whether she would have wanted to do this when she was twelve (or a bit older), or if her parents would have been supportive.
I have no idea about Kate.
