@sepulkralkreatur and i binge-watched the new kafka biopic-series, produced by german television. and i got to say - i loved it so much.
it combined the littlest details from kafka's life and also his aftermath, with his literary work - which often was linked to certain events. for those who read his work and diaries/biographies, spotting all the little references was very fun. and one of my most favourite things was probably the narrator with the reoccurring break of the fourth wall - as well as the music and collage-esque animations.
every episode was told through the perspective of significant people from kafka's life and dealt with a certain theme:
- as well as a 7th bonus-episode "kafka and me", which was more of a documental biography take with interviews, with a dog narrating the scenario and kafka's impact on our society.
joel basman did a great job at portraying franz kafka. the voice, the laugh and facial expressions being awkward all were very fitting and closing the hole, that we as readers experience towards kafka as a person.
the non-linear series served the exact atmosphere, that i associate with kafka: tragedy, humour, and the absurd. daniel kehlmann and david schalko did a great job on writing it. chapeau!

When Darwish said, “you are killing me, & you are keeping me from dying. This is love,” & Kafka wrote, “you are the knife I twist inside myself; that is love. That, my dear, is love.”

That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.

-the scene opens on Gregor going on a train to his job, passing by a cafe and seeing a whole bunch of children laughing and playing-
"Gregor thought that his life was just the same old routine every day..."
-cuts to his house, the family all sat around sitting and eating-
Mother: You know you should probably think about finding a girlfriend, son. Your life is passing you by.
Father: Listen to your mother, Gregor
Grete: Yeah!!
"With the same old stories coming from every direction..."
-his Boss knocks on the door, Gregor opens it-
Boss: Y'know, you should really call ahead if you're going to miss work!
Gregor: I'm sorry sir, it won't happen again.
"But what Gregor doesn't realize..."
-Gregor tossing and turning in his bed, suddenly shooting up-
"...Is that bug things..."
-Gregor holds up one hand, sees that it's a cockroach limb, and screams-
"...Are coming his way!"
-Kesha "Wake up in the morning" starts playing-
-Scene cuts to his family gathered around Gregor's door, while he struggles to get through-
Grete: Gregor, maybe you should let us help you?
Gregor: Don't worry,
Grete. I'm fine!
-Gregor tries to force his way through, but his bug body gets stuck and he spins like a wheel on an axle. One of the pigeons on his window in the door does a facepalm-
"On June 3rd..."
Boss: Y'know Gregor, I just don't know if we can keep you on payroll like this
-Scene cuts to Grete and her parents-
Grete: We have to help him!
Father: Can't we just get the bug spray? I know that-
-The mother smacks him-
Father: I know I know, I'm just kidding!
"Gregor is going to get the experience of a lifetime..."
Landlord: You know, I don't think we can keep you guys here if you can't pay-
-Gregor bursts out of his room, the landlord sees him, screams and runs away-
Gregor: Oh come on! I'm not that ugly!
"...Facing new obstacles..."
-Grete looks over to see a massive swarm of other cockroach transformed people flying away in a sweeping cinematic shot-
"...And finding out that family..."
-Grete is hanging off a cliff, Gregor in his bug form doing his best to hold onto her-
Grete: Aaaahh!! I'm falling!!!
-She falls, Gregor falls with her, and he unfurls his wings and they both fly to safety-
"...Is the buggest gift of them all!"
-Gregor locked in his room, wasting away, Grete comes by and leaves him a rotted plate of food-
Grete: Goodbye...
-Gregor crawls over to the food, and dies-
"Join us in theaters for the greatest family movie of the year!"

i love a main character that changes the world of every one who crosses their path. i love the moment of impact in the lives of those around that main character who have been affected by them one way or another. to be able to witness the change in hearts, minds, and actions. i eat that shit right up.
