Esbat Overview

~What is an Esbat?

An Esbat is a Wiccan ritualistic meeting held each month at the time of the full moon. Sabbats are the eight festivals of the wheel of the year, in celebration of the seasons changing. Esbats are the part of the season where the main magical work is done. Magic for all manner of needs is enacted during esbat rituals, both in group settings and by solitary practitioners.

~Celebrating the Esbats

In addition to the eight Sabbats observed every year, many Pagans celebrate a regular esbat, in which magic is performed and the gods and goddesses of the tradition are honored. Most covens and groups meet at least once a month and time this ceremony so it coincides with the full moon. When your coven meets up, either cast a circle or smudge to purify the area, establishing the space as sacred. Turn to the moon as either an individual or as your coven and state your intentions for your future magical work for the night or later in the month. Close with gratitude before moving onto the magical work.

Aries: Equal parts copal, dragon’s blood, and myrrh along with cedar chips that have been infused with musk oil. It is best made on a Tuesday afternoon where the power of Mars and the sun can give its maximum solar energy to the mixture.

Taurus: Equal parts benzoin, dried oak moss, and patchouli leaves, along with six drops of hyacinth, rose, and violet oils. It is best blended on a Friday at midnight under the moon and Venus’ energy.

Gemini: Equal parts dragon’s blood, labdanum, and mastic resin along with drops of mint oil. It’s best made on a breezy or windy Wednesday morning while working towards the West, infusing the power of air into it.

Cancer: Equal parts sandalwood, camphor, and myrrh, along with drops of ambergris oil. It can be made on a Monday night, while working under moonlight to infuse her essence into your mixture.

Leo: Equal parts amber chunks, copal, and frankincense with dried saffron threads and drops of civet oil. It can be made in a Sunday morning in the sunlight for more potency and blessings from the Sun.

have you ever made a list here of your favorite aikatsu coords from every series?

no but i will do it right now. um, i guess i'll do top 5 each? and i’m limiting myself to ones that appeared in the anime, because otherwise this whole post would consist of nothing but gothic outfits.

Aikatsu (season 1-2)

1. Mysterious Virgo Coord

Look at those blue sparkles... like shimmering water... nice. This coord inspired a painting I did for 9th grade art class, so thanks, Aikatsu!

2. Milky Way Cosmic Coord

I don’t have anything to say; I just like it.

3. Kaleido Mirror Coord

The patterns... exquisite! I don’t think this one is necessarily perfectly put together - the execution might be slightly clumsy in places - but it’s still so good and pretty.

4. Mermaid Pisces Coord

Even though I’m not super into girly pastel looks, I could always appreciate this one. It’s so satisfying to watch the wings flop as she dances. I like the Star Festival Coord too but if I had to pick just one, I guess I’d go with this one since it’s a little less overwhelming.

5. Party Queen Coord

I actually prefer the recolured version called the Summer Party Coord (because I am incredibly biased toward blue and purple), but I’m limiting myself to anime coords, so okay. Have you SEEN this one in motion??? The skirt swishing is surprisingly good for season 1’s not-so-great CGI. And the delicate gold corset is beautiful, too.

Akari gen (season 3-4)

1. Blue Empress Coord

This is the first Aikatsu coord I ever saw - you could probably say it was the one that got me into the series. The bat-like boots are wonderful and the whole outfit looks great in season 4′s high-quality CGI. But WHY is it named ‘blue’ when there’s hardly any blue in the whole outfit???

2. Odile Swan Coord

The shiny black feathers with green and purple undertones? The silver details? It’s all just so pretty. Another one of my original favs.

3. Violet Hatter Coord

When I was 14, I just wanted to wear this so badly. I even had vague plans to make it IRL, despite not really knowing how to make clothes.

4. Shine Witch Coord

Do I just like this because of the colours? ...maybe. But the magical moon motif on the skirt is so nice, and the turquoise sparkly fabric... yeah. Good stuff.

5. Dancing Diva coords (Dancing Night and Diva Night)

So I might have a thing for cool-toned glitter gradients.

Stars

1. Gothic Rose Coord

The jabot! The wings on the shoes! The shade of purple! I’d wear this. Let me wear it. Give it to me. Please.

2. Rosetta Thorn Coord

This actually wasn’t one of my initial favs - when I first saw it, I just thought there was too much blue... I guess it’s possible for me to think that after all! But I fell in love with the details such as the silver branches on the wings, and the thorny birdcage under the skirt... better not stab yourself on those thorns, Lily.

3. Rainbow Étoile Coord

Like the Mermaid Pisces Coord, this is one of those coords that’s so good it doesn’t matter whether girly things are your style or not. I’m getting all the 90s magical girl vibes from this.

4. Green Butterfly Tail Coord

One look at this coord and I’m in a Victorian museum looking at preserved butterfly specimens, pondering the ephemerality of life.

5. Can’t choose between the SPRs of Kirara, Rei and Aria lol

Friends

1. Bright Moonlight Coord

A rare case of an outfit without blue or purple as its base winning first place, because the design is Just That Good. Oh, come to think of it, did they use the skirt’s star/spike things as inspiration when designing Love Sagittarius?

2. Plume coords

The feather head accessories always were a little weird to me, but I love the idea and I love feathers so whatever. I was so excited to see these coords in the anime. I love how Sakuya’s outfit has a lock motif, and Kaguya’s has a key motif.

3. Dream Fantasy coords

I regret to inform you that I put these beneath the Plume Coords, but the Plume Coords appeal to me specifically in so many ways that this is the way it has to be. Well, I love the creativity and uniqueness of these coords. The ram horns and the hooves... epic. Although it must be really hard to dance in those hooves.

4. Ange Aquamarine Coord

It’s just so?? Pretty???

5. Glorious Emerald Coord

It pains me to not put this above Karen’s since I have Goth Favoritism (although is this coord really all that goth?) and I love snow/winter so much, but the coord is a little overwhelming so it has to get 5th place.

I would wear this IRL, no questions asked. So disappointed Q-pit didn't get to wear it in the anime.

2. Love Sagittarius

It’s so good, I like this one so much, always happy to see it. I was always an aggressively anti-astrology person but this design slaps so much that now I only hate astrology a normal amount.

3. Bright Sapphire

This is the kind of outfit I would’ve LOST MY MIND OVER when I was 11. The colours are so gorgeous and the skirt reminds me of a jellyfish!

4. Pegasus Angel

It was really hard to choose between Hana’s PRs because they’re all so beautiful. But this one wins due to its almost-sacred look. And the wings.

5. Wonderland Tale

It looks like an outfit from Ever After High. It’s whimsical, classy and nostalgic.

Anoint a candle from the base to top and away from you to repel energy. Conversely, anoint a candle from the top to base towards yourself to draw in energy. 

Anointing oils

Anointing oils can be bought but are easily made. Here are a few ways to make your own anointing oils.

Sun infusion: often made with a base of olive or vegetable oil with fresh or dried herbs added in. To make mix your oil and herbs in a clear jar that can be sealed and set it on the windowsill where it will receive plenty of sun for up to a month. Once the time is up strain the herbs from the oil.

Heat infusion: using a base oil and herbs, gently heat in a double boiler for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours

Essential oil mixture: No heating or waiting with this method. Simply choose your essential oils and dilute them in a base oil. 

Inscribing candles

Candles can have words, sigils, runes, zodiac symbols, and names carved into them. The preferred way to inscribe a candle is with an awl but a straight pin also works just as well. 

Ceromancy

Ceromancy is a divination technique of observing how a candle burns and melts looking for shapes and symbols. You can read the flame, the smoke, how the candle burns, and the melted wax itself by pouring it into water. Transient images are the images and symbols found in the hot liquid wax; while the shapes of the solid wax left after the candle is done burning is called persistent images.

Wings of the Zodiacs

Aries: Pale red-orange wings that fade to darker red at the tip of each feather. Their wings are long, thin and narrow, a little like a falcon’s, perfect for travelling at high speeds. Their feathers radiate with a warmth that might be scalding to those who do not expect it, but tolerable and comforting for those who embrace it. Gold dust flecks their feathers and trails in their wake, and is rumoured to grant those who are worthy courage in their direst times.

Taurus: Large, pale brown and cream-white wings extend from their shoulder blades. The colours remind you of a sparrow’s dainty wings, but the wings themselves are nothing close to the size of a sparrow’s; they are impossibly large and broad, making them perfect for soaring. Their feathers are soft and downy, and smell faintly of pine and wood.

Gemini: Their wings appear small at first glance, and their shape reminds you of a hummingbird’s. Don’t let their small size fool you; they are extremely fast in flight and very agile, and beat impossibly quickly to allow them to hover when they wish to. They are a glossy grey and white, and appear plain at first, but sifting through their feathers reveals a multitude of glittering blues and oranges.

Cancer: Their feathers are robin-egg blue and streaked with white and darker blues and purples. Each feather seems to glisten with rays of silver and violet when you sift through them. Their wings are not very good for long distance flights nor speed, but they are extremely soft and downy. It is rumoured that they can sense emotions and they leave behind a feather when they feel as if someone is sad or is having a bad day.

Leo: Their wings are large and broad. The tips of their feathers are black, but are flecked with shards of gold that could’ve been made from the ore themselves. Their wings are a deep, glossy blue that almost look black, and orange and yellow towards the ‘bottom’. Their feathers seem to glow gold under the sun.

Virgo: Their wings are pale brown, black and cream, and are modestly sized; just enough for them to lift themselves off the ground. Each feather is rounded, like an owl, which allows them to fly almost silently. The ends of their quills are black, as if they have been dipped in ink, and if you sift through their feathers, you might catch a glimpse of shimmering dark purples and greens.

Libra: Wide, cream and white wings extend from their shoulder blades. Towards the edge of their wings are flecks of darker brown and black. They are quite long instead of large and perfect for soaring and gliding. Their feathers shimmer with a multitude of purples and oranges under the sunlight. When they lose a feather on one wing, they automatically shed the same feather on the other wing to maintain balance, like a bald eagle.

Scorpio: Their wings look black at first glance, but if you get the chance to get close, you might see the glossy purples and blues that are streaked in between each feather. Their wings appear sharper and pointed at the edges, and they are narrow and long to help them fly quicker. In some places, it is rumoured that finding one means good luck, while in others, it means the opposite.

Sagittarius: Their wings are large and wide, perfect for long distance soaring. They are dark brown and tipped with white; oddly enough, there is a row of red-orange feathers near the ends of their wings as well. Their wings appear pointed and almost sharp at the ends. It is rumoured that, if you can find one and make it into an arrow’s quill, your arrow will fly straight and true in your direst times.

Capricorn: Their wings are mostly dark grey, with rows of paler grey and white towards the ends. Their wings are large and broad, and rounded towards the ends, like an owl’s, for near-silent flight. If you can get close and sift through their feathers, you might be able to see glossy dark green and indigo shards between the grey. Their feathers smell faintly of wind and cold mountain air.

Aquarius: Their wings are long and remind you of a gull’s or an albatross’s, and are perfect for gliding over water. Their feathers are made of rich, dark purples and blues, and seem to sparkle with silver dust. A row of white feathers edge their wings. Their wings smell of ocean and something alien that reminds you of the night sky.

Pisces: Their wings are made of soft blues and purples. They look surprisingly large compared to their size and each feathers seems to shimmer silver beneath the moonlight. Rows of white feathers edge their wings, and their feathers feel impossibly soft and downy. Their feathers smell faintly of flowers and perhaps a hint of ocean breeze.
