Gratitude to Grind
I’ve been evolving my perspective on gratitude, which is all the “rage” in self-help circles.
Most people talk about gratitude in the context of family, friends, health, food, homes, money, etc. That’s all right and things we should be incredibly thankful to have in our lives.
But that’s not all it can be.
We can’t only link gratitude to warm and fuzzy things.
We need to be grateful for the opportunity to change our outcomes and determine our futures through hard work and the “grind”, which has found a negative connotation in too many of our minds.
I’ve stopped thinking about Mondays as a slog I have to get through. I’m grateful there’s another week where my effort can support my family.
I’ve stopped thinking about a long to do list as an exhausting situation. I’m grateful that enough people consider me helpful to want my participation in many things.
I’ve stopped trying to avoid uncomfortable conversations at work. I’m grateful that I’m in a position to help others on their journey, even if it’s not always an easy discussion.
I’m grateful when things are easy. I’m grateful (usually) when they’re not, particularly if I have the trust and ability to overcome the hurdles in front of me.
Yes, sometimes the world will wear us down and it’s tough to be grateful in moments of chaos and challenge…but they should be the exception, not the rule.
Be grateful for what we have and those we have…but just as importantly be grateful to have the chance to work hard for the privilege of both.

How TO Read A Book
Do you want to understand books better, and remember more of what you read? Do you want to better understand the author’s goal and be a better critic of what you read? How to Read a Book is the classic guide to reading effectively. It teaches how to understand the crux of a book within 15 minutes, how to analyze a book intelligently, and how to synthesize multiple books together. If you read a lot of books, then it makes sense to learn how to read better and increase the value of your reading.

Never Enjoy Other's Failure or Struggle
We're competitive by nature.
We like to win.
Over time we start to believe that if others in our realm fail/struggle it will make it easier for us to succeed.
Don't do that. Even if it's true in some small way, that line of thinking does no one any good - particularly ourselves.
We compare ourselves to a foil not our own potential.
We contextualize our performance through negativity.
We drag down teams and others to prop ourselves up.
We become the type of person who steps away rather than stepping up when others need it.
We convince ourselves that life/work is a zero sum game and that our success is only possible when others fall short.
Said in a simple way: we become a crappy person.
First and foremost it's not a respectful way to carry ourselves. It creates an inherent negativity in the way move through our days, and, importantly...
it sets us up for our own failure because we will eventually meet someone down the line with more skill, luck or resources that will exceed our own performance. In those moments we'll certainly want them to have empathy and compassion and the way we are treated is likely a reflection of what we chose to do when we were in their position.
Our success and failures are just that. Ours.
Others success and failure are just that. Theirs.
When we succeed and someone else fails, reach back and pull them up.
When we fail, be humble and hopeful that the good we have done will motivate some else to do the same for us.
