"Only it is the end of the universe we're talking about," said Aziraphale. "So it'd have to be one of those space ships where your descendants are the ones who get out at the other end. You have to tell your descendants, you say, When you get to the Mountain, you've got to—" He hesitated.

I reread Terry Pratchett's Nation this year and I always enjoy it every read.

It takes its themes seriously but also has the lighter moments needed to give a breather in its overall heavy narrative.

What I appreciate the most about it is how human all the characters read to me. And how their beliefs aren't dismissed even when the truth comes out. There is no wrong answer when it comes to faith vs. science, both are given equal credit since they're part of that human experience.

I also see a theme carried on in Nation that I've seen in other Prachett books such as Good Omens and Small Gods.

"Here and now, we are alive." and variations thereof.

In the case of Nation, instead of going to the perfect world, Mau decides he will remain in this one and try to do his part to make it a better one.

It will probably never be completely perfect, but in many small ways we can make life brighter and more worth living.

By connecting with others and finding common ground, we can become more than the sum of our parts.

That's the message I took away from this reread.

And also this is my informal recommendation to read Terry Pratchett's Nation if you haven't yet, or reread it if it's been a while.

I think it's one of his best standalone novels, and it has a message that speaks to all ages.

REVIEW: Mo Dao Zu Shi

AVISO: Tá cheio de SPOILERS, então CUIDADO!

Vou começar esse aqui sendo bem sincera e deixando claro que já faz um bom tempo que li, portanto, a maior parte já ficou meio embaçada e perdida na minha memória. Mas vou tentar o meu melhor! MDZS é, sem uma melhor colocação, uma jornada política com certo romance. Você vai se encontrar em meio a esquemas, tramas e alguns momentos tão gays que vão te dar vontade de dar um soco na parede. Tipo, estou falando sério. A cena da declaração não sai da minha mente até hoje. Não consigo superar o fato de que o Wei Ying escolheu JUSTO aquele momento incrivelmente tenso para finalmente cuspir o que tanto estávamos esperando. O melhor nisso tudo é o "vilão", que ficou apenas de lado nessa hora e meio que incentivando tudo, como se ele próprio já estivesse de saco cheio e quisesse juntar aqueles dois de uma só vez, não importando o custo ou o que. Isso realmente me pegou demais. Agora, deixando isso de lado… MDZS também faz um trabalho incrível com toda a descrição de cenário e emoções dos personagens. A escrita foi muito bem dividida em todos os momentos e te faz conseguir sentir com clareza o quanto a autora se dedicou ao longo do caminho. Algumas pessoas podem acabar se sentindo desmotivadas ou até mesmo confusas graças a quantidade de flashbacks. Mas, por favor, não ignore ou passe apenas o olho neles. Alguns podem até parecer irrelevantes, mas no final, você vai acabar descobrindo que todos e tudo nessa história estão ali por um bom motivo. Outro ponto atrativo nessa leitura foram sem dúvidas os personagens. E não estou falando dos principais! Claro que eles são importantes e MUITO interessantes, mas eu realmente gosto de como os secundários conseguiram me fazer prender a respiração algumas vezes. Além de também terem feito a proeza de mexer demais com as minhas emoções, me fazendo querer chorar muito e começar toda uma revolução por causa deles. Acredite em mim, essa é uma verdadeira vitória. Não sou das mais emocionadas, muito menos costumo sentir muito quando não é nada relacionado aos principais, então foi bem curioso… Resumindo, é uma ótima novel que recomendo para qualquer um. Mas não como uma primeira leitura se você nunca leu nada parecido. Isso porque você pode acabar se sentindo facilmente perdido e desanimado com a quantidade de informações, os nomes de cortesia e toda a balela de cultivo com o bônus político. É preciso ter alguma paciência para essas coisas. Então é bom ter uma certa determinação ou muita dedicação se você quiser ler MDZS e ele for seu primeiro contato com esse gênero. Acho que disse tudo o que eu queria. Espero que você leia e goste!

obsessed with mass market paperbacks. their pleasing rectangular proportions. how they fit badly in a hoodie pocket so you can drag them around everywhere with you like a temporary little buddy. the way they fit in your hand because they're MADE for human hands and not as bookshelf decoration. the way the pages feel when you riffle them gently with your thumb. How pristine and crisp they look when you get them and how creased and folded they look when you're done, even if you try to be nice to them. how that wear is okay, how that's correct actually, because they're made with the philosophy that books aren't meant to be PRETTY, they're meant to be read. that little ripple new ones get on the left side from where you hold them when you're reading, the way the ripple only goes as far as you've read, because u change stories by reading as they are changing you. how you can find thousands of these creased and folded and loved little dudes in every thrift store and used book shop and neighborhood library and you can instantly see the ones that someone carried around in a backpack for weeks or read to pieces or gave up on halfway through because they wear being read like fresh snow wears footprints. I love these poorly made, subpar little rectangles so much. truly the people's books.

i firmly hold that it's my duty as a reader to believe it when an author tells me at the beginning of the series that the dragons are gone forever and never coming back. but god it's a struggle sometimes.

#that is: i don't think it's fair to hold that kind of genre knowledge against a specific instance of it #not even because while i've read hundreds of bad fantasy novels someone else might not have read any #but because hm. 'the dragons are gone' is the foundation of a kind of feeling - discovery; renewal; awakening - #there's not a way to get the feeling later on without laying the foundation #so even if the foundation feels like busywork for me the reader #it has to be there in some form or other

Going Postal Reread Thoughts 3/11/23

I recently reread Going Postal on a whim because I got the paperback for Christmas and hadn’t opened the front page yet this year.  And I figured “there’s no time like the present” and just decided to read.

I have to say that I appreciate just how well its story is told.

(Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t read it the first time)

This starts of course, by examining the main character, Moist von Lipwig.  He begins the book as a con artist and at the end of the book, he’s still a con artist.  He doesn’t suddenly become an honest man and completely turn over a new leaf.  He still bends the truth, pulls daring stunts and ultimately defeats his rival, Reacher Gilt by trickery.  His plan to use the words of the dead could only come from a truly twisted mind like his. (And I admire him for it!)

Then we go into the worldbuilding that we get for Ankh-Morpork and the other cities.  The clacks (semaphore) towers are a major part of the story, emphasizing their role and how important they are for communication.  The narrative (and Moist von Lipwig himself) recognizes how much society has come to depend on the clacks system, and that the solution to the Grand Trunk’s problems (horrible maintenance, repeated breakdowns, good workers dying for corporate greed) - was not destroying the towers, but taking them from the executives who ran them into the ground.  The goal is not to  replace the Grand Trunk with the Post Office, but for both of them to work together to send different messages for a variety of reasons.

Finally, there is a theme of change throughout the novel.  Both Groat and Stanley get a new lease on life as the post office is rebuilt with a promotion and stamps respectively.  Moist chooses to stay in the city and continue using his corkscrew mind for good deeds (he doesn’t have to stop unless he wants to).  Adora Belle gets closure for her brother’s death and her family’s stolen business.  The characters grow and adapt (or sometimes, stick to what they know best but apply it in a different way) and I really loved noticing that this time around.

This was a wonderful rereading experience.  If y’all haven’t reread this one in a while, I highly recommend it!  It’s fun, exciting, and a lot of its themes are still applicable today.  Like many of his other novels, Terry Pratchett made his characters read like people, and that is what I appreciate most of all.

REVIEW: The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System

AVISO: Tá cheio de SPOILERS, então CUIDADO!

Okay. O que dizer sobre esse bebê? Eu sou simplesmente OBCECADA e DE QUATRO pelo Luo Binghe. Ele é sem dúvidas meu protegido, meu precioso, meu tudo! Eu daria a minha alma, meu cu, meu cachorro… TUDO POR ELE E NUNCA ME ARREPENDERIA! Você pode pensar que estou exagerando, mas não. Ele é somente um bebê que precisa de muuuuuito amor e algumas sessões de terapia. E, certo, talvez também algumas aulas de Love Yourself com Kim Namjoon… Estou saindo da linha, mas, CONTINUANDO…! Obviamente, ele não é a minha única coisa favorita nessa história. Eu amo Shen Qingqiu. Tipo, MUITO MESMO! Ele tem uma personalidade extremamente divertida, atraente e cativante. Mesmo que essa personalidade seja representada mais internamente, e externamente, ele esteja apenas tentando manter uma poker face. Mesmo assim ele ainda é aquele protagonista que vai te fazer rir em momentos VERDADEIRAMENTE duvidosos – Montanha Maigu, estou olhando para você! – e fazer você questionar sua própria sanidade graças a isso. Mas é precisamente por isso que você simplesmente não consegue evitar o desejo de continuar. Também não se pode esquecer o fato de que SV pega muito quando você percebe o quão profundo ele é no sentido emocional dos personagens. Principalmente, pra mim, quando vemos um em específico. Luo Binghe tem uma jornada psicológica que equivale a um passeio em uma montanha russa. Ele está quebrado, está quebrando e então voltando a se recuperar, só para cair um pouco mais. Foi realmente doloroso chegar aos capítulos finais e ver como ele estava tão claramente destruído. O quão magoado, solitário e desesperado ele estava. Houve momentos em que eu realmente só queria o pegar no colo e bater nessa querida autora. Mas, bem… Não tinha muito o que fazer. Pelo menos ela não me enganou e foi um final feliz. Bem, já falei sobre o casal principal – mais sobre o Binghe, mas o que posso fazer se eu só amo tanto ele? –, agora vou trazer outro tópico que eu adorei. O fato de que SV se trata de uma grande sátira a Novels com protagonistas garanhões com harém, onde tudo se resume e se resolve com sexo. Mo Xiang Tong Xiu atingiu todos os pontos aqui, trazendo situações onde era possível sentir as críticas com uma veracidade quase cruel. A, novamente, cena da Montanha Maigu foi indiscutivelmente o destaque dessa sátira. Porque nela temos um Binghe completamente ferrado emocional e psicologicamente, sem qualquer consciência, com uma espada fodida o controlando e um Shen Qingqiu que pensa que toda a situação pode se resolver com sexo. Só porque isso é "bom senso" nesse tipo de Novel. Sendo que, o que acabou realmente resolvendo tudo no final, foi o diálogo. Algo muito simples, certo? Simples, mas de difícil execução. Ainda mais quando você já empilhou uma eternidade de mal entendidos entre você e a outra pessoa. E essa é precisamente a situação em que BingQiu se encontra praticamente desde o início da novel. E, claro, tendo uma ajudinha extra do sistema que parecia obcecado em piorar tudo. Sinceramente? Fico chocada com a forma como as coisas acabaram até que bem e de forma suave. Poderia ser pior, acredite. Bom, fora isso, outra coisa que me prendeu nessa leitura foi a escrita. Deus, eu poderia me afogar nessa merda e ainda estaria implorando por mais! MXTX tem um estilo de escrita que é realmente extremamente cativante e que não te deixa largar depois de te pegar! Ainda mais graças ao fato de que você pode REALMENTE sentir o desenvolvimento e o crescimento das relações entre os personagens. Tanto com os principais quanto com os secundários. Alguns podem não receber muita atenção, mas você definitivamente ainda vai se sentir cativado por eles em algum momento. A comédia por aqui também é ouro puro! Me lembro de ter perdido o fôlego e chegado a engasgar várias vezes durante a leitura… Então, em resumo… Leia. LEIA SV E SE JUNTE A MIM NO CÍRCULO DE PROTEÇÃO À LUO BINGHE!!!
