European leaders meet in Granada amid tensions over aid to Ukraine
European leaders are expected to pledge long-term support for Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, after the US president expressed concern that a lack of unanimity among Republicans in Congress could prevent continued military aid to Ukraine.
Zelensky is expected to attend the European Policy Community summit in Granada. This forum to promote co-operation between more than 40 countries was established last year after the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
Officials familiar with the plans said attending the summit would give him an opportunity to ask for more urgent military aid, such as air defence systems. On Wednesday night, Zelensky posted a video in which he said:
“We are preparing for intensive international activities – this week and next week should be productive for Ukraine.”

Nations having human names is kinda odd when you think about it. You’d expect their people to just call them by their official names or else “motherland” or “fatherland.” So, here’s me coming in with a headcanon about where these human names come from (´∀`)
A nation’s legal name, the one used on treaties and trade deals, can change over time. Or be different depending on who’s speaking. Germany is Deutschland to some his friends, Japan is Nihon at home, exonyms vs. endonyms, kingdoms become republics, yadda, yadda. But a nation’s human name - their gifted name - is forever. I call it “gifted” because it’s given to them not by the politics of the world, but by one of their citizens. One of their best and brightest. A son or daughter any of them could be proud of. Any human can try giving a nation a name, but if it isn’t the right one it won’t stick.
The first nation to get a human name was China when he met Confucius. They encountered each other on the road one evening waaay back around 467BC when the philosopher was on his way home. They talked, shared tea, and Confucius called China “Yao Wang” for the first time. China couldn’t explain it, but he just knew this was his name. Knew deep in his soul
Greece was second. He marched with Alexander the Great and finished the campaign as Heracles Karpusi. When the other ancient nations heard the news they were all very excited. Except Yao, who was put out that he wasn’t unique anymore lol. Then gifted names were officially “a thing” that nation people eagerly waited for. I imagine their naming days are very fondly remembered along with the human who was there for them. A few examples throughout history:
Russia knelt before Catherine the Great and rose up again as Ivan Braginsky.
Spain was invited to read a first draft of Cervantes’s and left as Antonio Carriedo.
Japan walked with Nobunaga the day before Anegawa and went to bed that night as Kiku Honda.
One of the sole exceptions to the usual way is America, who was named “Alfred” by another nation rather than a human. Arthur named Alfred after one of his favourite kings: Alfred the Great. Alfred chose the “F. Jones” part himself when he became independent. Before that he was Alfred Kirkland. This was a weird blip in nation people history, but they chalk it up to Arthur’s magic. As for Arthur himself, he was named by Merlin. Yes, that Merlin
I haven’t thought of specifics for every nation. A few ideas are Otto von Bismarck for Ludwig, Napoleon for Francis, and maybe one of the Popes for the Italy bros. What do you guys think? What historical figure might have named your nation?

Lemon 💛 - The filth and sin. Full blown tango. Actually nsfw. Le sex. General kinks added in as well.
Grapefruit 🩷 - A rarer ranking not often used to be alluded to darker things. Such as yandere, Stockholm Syndrome, gRape, murder, body mutilation, etc. Usually sexual or has sexual themes but not always.

Since that article about physical contact vs non-physical contact in different countries, here are some experiences I've had about it:
Usamericans are, by far, the most different from my experience. They are the only ones that get physically tense if you unexpectedly touch them, the only ones that would make a step back if you get to close so as to keep their personal space safe. The first time I met a Usamerican, he was my age (17 at the time), and he was staying in my house for a week as part of an exchange program. My mother felt that he was always very tense, that he needed to relax and so she did what every Spanish mother in her place would do: hug him, hold him, touch him and feed him. He would only get tenser, to my mother's frustration. Nobody explained us or him that the reason he was so tense in our house was the incredible amount of physical contact he was seeing and experiencing all the time by everyone. I have also met very huggy and physically affectionate usamericans and I wonder in which circles they usually move or where are they from because they are an exception. It was on the internet that I first saw "PDA" (public displays of affection) as something negative that people shouldn't do. I guess it comes from the US, it may also be a UK thing?? I don't know. It was confusing because people seem to get angry at it and I am like "what are you supposed to do then? How do people know you like them?" Also, learning that teachers are NOT (never ever) supposed to touch their students, I was in shock. What do you do with toddlers? They need physical affection and they will come up to you for it. What if a 12 year-old is crying? Aren't you going to at least confort them? How do you confort someone without touching them? Now that I know more about US culture, I wonder if white people are more distant than black people, or if religion plays a role.
Chinese and Japanese people I've met tend to keep their distance and may feel uncomfortable but, the ones I've had more contact with, soon get used to it and even enjoy it. I guess many won't or will find it invasive, but I have met some who went all in the moment they saw a world where you could hug people just because. I particularly remember two Chinese girls who, upon meeting a lot of Spanish people in France and seeing we were always hugging and touching, started to do it *way too much*, touching body parts you are not supposed to touch (like ass or boobs) because I guess for them it was all equally accessible/non-accessible, so we had to teach them to control themselves a bit. There was also a Japanese young man, a friend of a friend, who was shocked at first but then travelled around Europe and came back like "nobody was touching me :((((". He thought it was a European thing. He told me that back home in Japan, nobody would hug him, not even his mom.
Northern Europeans always keep their distance and won't hug you unless there is a need for it (and depending on the country/person, maybe not even then). Any other physical contact that is frequent in Spain, like grabbing someone's shoulder, is weird and could be interpreted as flirting. I have seen hugs and physical closeness in Sweedish series in situations that US series won't do, but I still had to tell my Northern European friends in Russia that, now that we were friends, I expected hugs and would ask for hugs frequently. Even with that, I once asked a Swiss friend for a hug and he went "why?". I was in shock. "What do you mean "why"? Because I want a hug? You shouldn't question hugs!". A Spanish friend in Switzerland told me that when she broke up with her boyfriend, her Swiss friend was there listening and giving company but not once did she got close enough to touch her. Not even for a hug. A Sweedish girl who couchsurfed at my place for a couple of weeks said that Madrid was the city of love because people were always hugging, snogging, kissing and touching each other everywhere (particularly couples).
A UK friend once told me about a girl he knew was feeling sad and he left her crying in her room and I was like "what the fuck. why would you leave her crying" and he said "that's what you do, if she wants to cry, you give her space" and I was like "listen to me: if a Spanish, and I would go as far as saying a Mediterranean, is crying, you better stay around. You keep an eye on them, you hug them, hold their hand, give them food. You do not leave someone who is crying and having a bad time alone unless they ask for it, and even then, you keep watch and check on them later on". He told me that you should leave English people alone when they are feeling blue (I can't promise I would do that but fair enough, I'll keep it in mind).
The UK is the only place where I don't know what is it that I do that people think not only that I'm flirting, but that things are happening between us, when I'm just there. I'm usually very good to know when I'm flirting and when I'm not but somebody may be interested. In the UK, it has happend a couple of times that we were having a normal conversation and then suddenly there was a certain complicity and I was there like "whaaaaat.... oh shit, I got in too close, didn't I? I may have touched their elbow on my way to the toilet or something".
Russians are surprisingly similar to Spanish, culturally and in character. There wasn't that much cultural shock there. They are not as touchy as Spanish people are, but they enjoy it, they hug people easily and they like physical closeness. Particularly, young girl-friends are very tactile, they often hold hands in the street, hug, etc. I have seen teenagers sitting on each other in public parks, I have seen couples hugging and kissing in the street. When travelling by train with my Spanish friend who lives in Switzerland, we chatted with some 50 year-old men in our wagon. She joked to one of them (in Spanish, I translated) and touched his arm to help drive the joke (he mentioned weaponry and she said "are these the Russian guns?"), and he didnt' bat an eye, he laughed and nodded. "Oh, they don't mind being touched" she pointed out.
Latin Americans seem to me just like Spanish, but they feel Spanish are cold and distant.
I think, amongst the Mediterraneans, we are all more or less the same, whether it's Europeans, Maghrebians, Balkans... I have a feeling that some Asian countries and some African countries might be similar too, but I don't have much experience with them.
I'd say the way it works in Spain is this: we touch people to communicate with them. It serves the purpose of showing we are there, we like your company, we are listening. If you paid attention, you could see who gets along with whom, who are closer friends or family by how they stand next to each other and how they touch each other.
I will end with an anecdote. I am currently interpreting psychological sessions for Russian refugees. We were in a session and the psychologist received a phone call, she excused herself saying that it was the doctor and maybe something had happened at school with her daughter. She apologised herself, she was only picking up in case there was an emergency. It wasn't the doctor so she asked to be called later but she was quickly given some good news before hanging up. She said "I apologise, but I need to share this with you." She shared the news with us, crying because she got emotional. My first instinct (that I noticed only because there was a Russian person there who may not be familiar with Spanish ways) was to touch her arm so she knew we were there. I asked her "do you want a hug?" and she said yes. So we hugged and the patient came to hug her as well, copying us. We stopped a professional work environment to hug a person who was celebrating some happy news, to help her regain composure and feel accompanied.

Palestine and the Crisis of Democracy
While right now the main attention should rightfully be on the immediate victims of this ongoing catastrophe, this incident has also exposed how much the power of lobbying groups & corporate interests has eroded western democracies.
At this point they’re not meaningfully different from China or Russia aside from being wealthier. What have China or Russia done that the USA isn’t allowing its client state to do right now?
We’re supposed to have free speech? Where is our free speech now, if being anti war can cost you your job & the media is owned by the corporations.
At this point ppl in the global south are 100% justified to distrust the western bloc as much as we distrust China or Russia.
We’re approaching a 1984-ish situation of 3 identical superpowers ravaging contested territories in endless proxy wars.
That said, it’s tempting to go ranting about „the evil west“ or „the whites“ or curse all israelis – and don’t get me wrong, the west as an institution has proven its moral bankrupcy and IDF as an organization with a culture of fomenting this needs to be dismantled & abolished even more badly then ICE or the USA police.
But when you look at the people on the ground, not politicians or media, but at the individual human people, that’s not really the case: We’re seeing record protest turnouts everywhere.
Politicians are being swarmed with protest mails. (I just sent some myself)
Even in the USA, two thirds of the population want a ceasefire. Heck, even in israel, 62% want a ceasefire.
And there’s no telling how much of the rest genuinely want this vs. Being misled or confused by propaganda. Don’t get me wrong: Those people making mocking tiktoks are evil and I’d love to see them roasted on a skewer, but they are NOT the majority and acting like they are is bad tactics.
So what does this mismatch tell us?
We don’t have functioning democracies right now.
Maybe some South Americans do, maybe Belgium and Spain and Ireland, but the rest of us?
Not so much.
We gotta fix that, not just for our sake, but for what it does to the rest of the world.
Whoever’s in charge isn’t us, and its a dreadful mixture of incompetence and evil.
It’s not that all people, not even all western people, are terrible and evil. It’s that right now, in both the USA and even Germany with it’s 6 mainstream parties, there’s no viable candidate you can vote for that will not support this madness.
Nobody really benefits from this, or wants this, but a small coalition of fascists, the military industrial complex, a few crooked politicians, and a bunch of opportunistic hatecrimers of antisemitic, islamophobic and/or arabophobic persuasions.
This is what happens when problems that are pointed out time & time again don’t get fixed: Like the longstanding human rights abuses in Israel (that were known aout for SO LONG!), the existence of veto powers deadlocking the UN, legalized bribery & first-past-the-post system in the USA, USA hegemonic control of europe…
It was a perfect storm of every long-standing flaw in the system coming together to create a perfect storm of horror.
- but the first ones to sin are usually the last ones to bleed and the ones who pay the bulk of the price are, as ever so often, those who were already the most oppressed.
So what do we do?
Vote small party, maybe, for europeans. Vote in primaries to get the bought-out mainstream candidates out, if youre in the US.
Protest, complaining and combatting misinformation is gonna be an important tool while our democracies are compromised, we can’t rely on voting alone.
If us talking didn’t help they wouldn’t try to shut us up.
Messaging wise, on this issue, we might stress being anti-war. They’re trying a different smear because mocking anti-war ppl as bleeding-heart hippys doesn’t work anymore.
They can’t say being anti-war is antisemitic.
It’s important, of course, that (unlike the hippys) we don’t slip into wishy-washyness here or peace at any price that just basically the oppressed shutting up. Just peace or no peace. Lasting Peace of no Peace.
But peace has an appeal to most people, even those inclined to be wishy-washy or apolitical.
I think selling them on Lasting Peace and Just Peace might work better than shaming them for not being hardliner enough.
It’s super cynical and fucked up that we’re even having to THINK about „marketing“ when people are dying, but we need to convince people, especially since the usefulness of our votes is currently compromised.
Even a king must yield if there’s a mob with pitchforks outside the door.

Important PSA:
Patriotism vs Nationalism vs Jingoism:
Patriotism: I love my country when she is right, I acknowledge my country when she is wrong
A patriot loves their country, celebrates when their country does good things, holds remembrance when their country disappoints them. A patriot from one nation can be friends with a patriot from another nation, and may even be patriotic for multiple nations. When their country achieves greatness, they are genuinely proud. When their country claims to achieve greatness but achieved nothing, they feel empty. A patriot typically values unity for all over prosperity for a few. They value the opinions of people critical of the country they love, and see constructive criticism as a form of love for their country.
Nationalism: I love my country, right or wrong, may she always do right
A nationalist loves their country, celebrates their country when their country does good things, and typically ignores or refuses to acknowledge that their country can do bad things. A nationalist believes their country is the best country to ever exist and thus may find it difficult to be friends with a patriot or another nationalist (for, only one nationalist’s opinion can be true). A nationalist rarely is nationalistic to more than one nation. A Nationalist cannot tell the difference between genuinely achieved greatness and false claims to genuine achieved greatness. A nationalist typically values unity for as many people as possible as long as it leads to prosperity primarily for them. They ignore the opinions of people critical of the country they love, often believing they are “fake news”.
Jingoism: I love my country, right or wrong, she is ALWAYS right
A jingoist loves their country, celebrates their country when their country does good things, and will celebrate their country when their country does evil by finding some way to make said evil good, for a jingoist believes their country is unable to be bad. A jingoist believes their country is the best country to ever exist and thus all other countries should be subservient to their country, if not outright invaded and forced into submission. A jingoist could never be friends with a jingoist from another country nor a patriot from another country nor a nationalist from another country. A jingoist does not care about the difference between genuine achieved greatness, false claims to genuine achieved greatness, or even acknowledgements of wrongdoings for their country is always correct no matter what. A jingoist could care less about unity, as long as they and other “real countrymen” are prosperous, that is all that matters. They hate the opinions of people critical of the country they love, and will silence and suppress them.
Examples:
Patriots: The vast majority of people in the vast majority of countries. Most Americans are included under this label, because, if there’s one thing most Americans can agree on, it’s how bad their country is (whether that be “our deficit is too high and we don’t take care of our vets” or “legalized racism is still a problem and the withdrawal from Afghanistan was too early”)
Nationalists: Extremists (eg Neo Confederates, Reagan obsessed conservatives) and many former colonial countries, including Japan, the UK, France, Spain, Turkey, China, Russia, and to a lesser extent, Belgium, Netherlands, and Portugal. For example, most Brits genuinely believe that the British empire did more good than bad, and Japanese history in schools paints Japan in WW2 as a victim. Similarly, Neo Confederates focus on the “greatness” of the CSA without thinking about the not so great parts of it… like, ykno, slavery. Note, this is not all the people of these nations, more their governments
Jingoists: Nazis, modern day Israel under Netanyahu, the propaganda media, and extreme Zionism, MAGA Anti-Woke WASP Americans, Putin’s inner circle, the KKK, and North Korea to name a few. It’s very cult like to say the least, and often genocidal.
The Fourth Category: I love my country when she is right, and I am disturbed when she is wrong, so I will focus on when she is wrong more than when she is right, because I believe righting these wrongs is more important than anything else, and that is how I show love for my country
I’m not sure what to call this category, and only two nations — Germany and Rwanda — fit within this category really, though their are minorities of people in other countries (namely, USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, most Latin American countries, most settler colonialist countries, and Netherlands) who view their country this way
Be a Patriot not a Jingo!!!

British Columbia (Headcanon)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
British Columbia, the “chill province”. Biggest province of the west, she’s the third most populous of the country with a population estimated to 5,368,266 (2022). She’s the second most expensive place to live in, after Ontario.
When in the east coast, with New France and the thirteen colonies, it was the French fighting the British to get more land, BC was disputed between Spain in Russia, in the 1700s. It’s when James Cook, an English man who was the first to chart the land (this is not considering the many Natives communities who lived there first), came in that Britain settled the conflict. Before the 1850s, it was mainly used as fur post, with the Vancouver island managed by the Hudson bay company. Then, in 1857, it was the gold rush, and the colony of British Columbia was made, which the Vancouver colony joined after the rush in the 1860s. BC, who was separated by the rocky mountains from the rest of the British colonies, was made a province in the 1871 (country was made in 1867) when MacDonald promised there would a rail link from the east cost to them. (Note: this is generic reshearch I did. BC is the province of the West coast and I'm from the Québec on the East coast, so I don't really know their whole history)
British Columbia is friendly, but not kind (think of the West coast states like when Washington joins the Table). She keep to herself, but is nice enough to be friend with Alaska, Washington, and Yukon. She can relate to them with the earthquakes and wildfire season, but she’s kind of cynical. She understand many languages (Spanish and Russian from the conflict, and remember but can`t really speak her Natives' languages anymore), but mostly speak English; she’ll speak French either to annoy Alberta, or to mock Québec. Like most of the provinces, she’s a loner, and will annoy the others when she can. She’s chill, kind of "don’t really care for work" (she hates it) and still share some hippie vibes to anyone who don't know her. She also a good actress, making you believe she cares about it when she can't wait to never see you again.
As for temperature, she’s fairly stable, staying around 20°C/70°F in the summer to 0°C/32°F to 5°C/41°F in the winter. Concerning her relationships with other provinces, as said before she mostly keep to herself, so not close to them at all. She will banter time and time again with Alberta, who wants a pipeline to cross the Rocky mountains to sell oil in Asia, but BC is pro-environment, therefore she obviously refused, thus the banter environment vs economy is common between those two, but if you insult the west? The west twins and Yukon are suddenly her bests friends.
Physically, she (6’4) is taller than Texas (6’3), and got that smile where you’re not sure if she’s honest or fucking with you. She has golden skin, mid-back curly, bleached blond hair with and dark green eyes. She has an eternal pacific dogwood flower crown on her head, a white cropped tank top with a Canucks pin and she wears her flag as a boho skirt with black doc martens. She always got a join on her, even if she already smoking one (she’s meaner when she’s not high, so the other provinces don’t mention it to Cana).
Tumblr media
Here she is, polite, visibly chill. She’s probably savouring the fact that she made Alberta angry again.

To feel envy is human, to savour schadenfreude is devilish.
- Arthur Schopenhauer
I was in the stadium with members of my family and friends watching the epic Japan vs Spain World Cup game. What an atmosphere at the end of the game when both Japanese and Spanish fans realised they were now through the group and that Germany were now knocked out of the World Cup despite their 4-2 win over Costa Rica.
Spain completely dominated the first half, but Japan overcame this to win 2-1 stunningly. Spain chose Alvaro Morata as their customary number nine, which instantly paid dividends as the Atlético Madrid player headed in the opening goal after receiving a precise cross. As Spain dominated possession and limited Japan to a few half-chances in the first half, Morata continued to provide a threat from inside the box.
After the break, Japan's high-intensity pressing punished Spain for sloppy passing by stealing the ball, which replacement Ritsu Doan skillfully finished. Almost shortly after, Japan put the ball in the back of the net once more, and a VAR review affirmed that Ao Tanaka's goal stood. Minutes before the end, Dani Olmo came within inches of winning, but Japan held on thanks to an outstanding second-half performance to win Group E. The ‘Samurai Blue’ more than deserved their draw and to go through. They were tenacious and full of self belief and energy. It was a great game.
At the end of the game Japanese fans were crying with joy and the Spaniards along with neutrals in the stands joined them. It was a cathartic moment for all football fans when it dawned on us that German were humiliated and on their way home.
In the hotel bars afterwards the drink flowed. I was with Japanese friends and Spanish friends and others as we celebrated. Never did a Suntory Yamazaki 12 Year Old single malt whisky taste so sweet. We watched around us Qataris on television having fun at the Germans’ expense.
On the eve of the World Cup the game’s governing body threatened to book players – such as the seven European captains, including Germany’s Manuel Neuer – who were planning on wearing the OneLove armbands, which promote diversity and inclusivity. Same-sex relationships and the promotion of same-sex relationships is criminalised in Qatar, a Muslim-majority country with Islam as the state religion.
In protest, the Germans had covered their mouths - a reference to being silenced by FIFA - for their pre-match photograph before the Japan game. “Human rights are non-negotiable,” the German federation said in a statement at the time. “That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important for us. Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position.” Their conduct greatly angered the Qataris - and indeed many Arabs and other Muslims here at the World Cup. They saw double standards and starch western hypocrisy at work, and even racism.
The Germans have a point - up to a point. But so do the Qataris - it is after all their sovereign country, not ours. Qataris and others would say if you don’t speak up for the Uygher Muslim being rounded up in concentration camps in China during the last Winter Olympics, or speak up for the endless litany of human righrs violation in Putin’s Russia during the last footbal World Cup, then what leg are you standing on to speak up for others elsewhere? Why are you so selective in your activism? Activism is easy when it doesn’t cost you anything.
Much of the Western media coverage of the World Cup is so misinformed and just plain hyperbolic BS.
In any case, German had decided to focus their energies on their holier than thou woke virtue signalling at the start of this tournament rather than focus on the football.
They paid the piper.
The Japanese have a saying: “The misfortunes of others taste like honey.” The French speak of joie maligne, a diabolical delight in other people’s suffering. The Danish talk of skadefryd, and the Dutch of leedvermaak. In Hebrew enjoying other people’s catastrophes is simcha la‑ed, in Mandarin xìng‑zāi‑lè‑huò, in Serbo-Croat it is zlùradōst and in Russian zloradstvo. More than 2,000 years ago, Romans spoke of malevolentia. Earlier still, the Greeks described epichairekakia (literally epi, over, chairo, rejoice, kakia, disgrace). “To see others suffer does one good,” wrote the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “To make others suffer even more so. This is a hard saying, but a mighty, human, all-too-human principle.”
The Germans of course call it schadenfreude. I love the German word: schadenfreude. From Schaden, meaning damage or harm, and freude, meaning joy or pleasure: damage-joy.
The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer called it “an infallible sign of a thoroughly bad heart and profound moral worthlessness,” the very worst trait in human nature. (He also said that anyone caught enjoying the suffering of others should be shunned from human society.)
I have come to believe that Schopenhauer was wrong. We might worry that a taste for other people’s misery will corrupt our souls, yet this emotion is far from simply “bad.” It touches on things that have mattered most to human societies for millennia: our instincts for fairness and hatred of hypocrisy; our love of seeing our rival suffer in the hope that we might win ourselves; our itch to measure ourselves against others and make sense of our choices when we fall short; how we bond with each other; what makes us laugh. If we peer more closely at this hidden and much-maligned emotion, liberate ourselves from its shame and secrecy, we will discover a great deal about who we really are.
It’s telling no one I’ve observed talks about LGBT rights or even migrant labour exploitation in the bars or just amongst the football gathering of fans. They just came for the football. It’s a reminder that the self-important culture wars of the West are of little importance to the wider world. They really don’t care.
Football may not bring the world together around LGBT issues but it sure can unite the world around having a laugh at Germany’s ignominious exit from the Qatar World Cup. I would call that progress.
