my possibly-unpopular-these-days fic opinion is that i think there should be more fic where the characters are exploring queerness for the first time, instead of being old hands at it and uncertain of nothing but whether a particular partner reciprocates their desire

also like. to be clear, while there are a lot of reasons one might want to see that represented: specifically i want to see it because i think it's sexy :)

#also yes probably the thing to do would be to go back and read older fic #like‚ iirc there was a ton of eg professionals fic in this vein #but often those were stories about having to overcome an enormous amount of internalized homophobia #and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with that‚ it's hard for me personally to relate to #or at least—i can't relate to the kind of internalized homophobia that's about actively thinking it's Bad to be queer & agonizing abt it #my personal experience was (probably still is in some ways!) about‚ like‚ total failure to *recognize* my own feelings #so i'm thirsty for stories that are like. oh THAT's what i'm feeling. late-in-life firsts.#candlestick silhouette suddenly perceptible as two faces kissing-close. etc.#anyway. just a little monday evening introspection or whatever :)#fannish things #the psyche

The illustration of H. P. Lovecraft's, Great Cthulhu shown below, appeared in the legendary publication H. P. L. John T. Swanson ll - Born 1949, was the artist in this case and he had several illustrations in that landmark Lovecraft-celebrating publication. This particular image is an excellent example of psychedellic-era artwork. Certainly the multiple examples of almost psychedelic 'acid trips' Lovecraft's protagonists slip into when faced with horrors from other dimensions or states of reality must have appealed to the more progressive-minded citizens of the 60s and 70s. It is a shame that most of the illustrations appearing in the early Lovecraft fanzines lacked color. Even half-tone illustrations were prohibitively expensive to reproduce and these early era publications were generally published by amateur fans with limited resources. How H. P. Lovecraft, a man outwardly strait laced and sober, who personally claimed absolutely zero belief in the supernatural could have produced fiction of such extraordinary imaginative power and with such apparent conviction is truely remarkable. just found out my cousin (who lives in England) is in the art department of a bunch of shows??? And she worked oN DOCTOR WHO? AND HAD LUNCH WITH DAVID TENNANT???? and she just told me so casually because she's interested in the art, not the show? I mean, excuse me? She worked on SHERLOCK???? FOR A WHOLE SEASON?? She worked on Peaky Blinders and Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones??? And probably other things because she has a shitty memory and according to her everything is a blur?? AND AT ONE POINT SHE WAS LIKE: "oh and have you ever heard of Neil Gaiman?" And I was trying not to scream, because yes, of course I've heard of Neil, he's only my favorite author, I've only read like all of his books multiple times, and if you say you worked on Good Omens or the Sandman I'm going to lose it completely. So I said "yeah I've read a couple of his books," -you know, like a liar- "what about him?" and she goes "well I worked on one of his shows and he's brilliant i just can't remember which one" and i go "w-what do you mean he's brilliant? You're.. you're talking about his writing... his writing is brilliant, right?" And she cheerfully says "oh no I don't read books, I ment he was really nice and brilliant when I talked to him" and i go "WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT" and she thinks for a moment and goes "oh! BRICKS" WHAT IN THE WORLD YES NO THAT MAKES SENSE YOU GET TO WORK AND TALK WITH NEIL FUCKING GAIMAN AND YOU TALK ABOUT BRICKS? NO THAT'S TOTALLY NORMAL I'M NOT MAD ".... it was what I was designing at the time, I needed to know what vibe the bricks should have. Anyway want to see the spinning fireplace I made for doctor who" WHAT THE FUCK.

There are little romance subplots all around me irl and I don't have the time to turn any of them into novels

Today I went to my favorite Italian restaurant and was seated at the table nearest the kitchen. We noticed a change to the menu. The list of pastas had been replaced by just "pasta of the day." We asked what the pasta of the day was. The waiter told us it was a mystery. So we ordered it, and when it came it was pasta with eggs and bacon, and I was so surprised and delighted by this unexpected whimsy that I started to clap. And then I noticed the chef watching me from the doorway and smiling. He had clearly come out wanting to see what people's reactions would be.

I'm not saying I love the chef or that the chef loves me. I am saying that is a seed with which to grow a romance that I don't have time to write.

the thing abt being nb—and very arguably abt being trans in general, and even being queer in ways that aren’t primarily abt gender (except insofar as any sort of queerness inevitably imposes some degree of gender exile, in that Manhood is generally understood to imply a particular relationship to Womanhood and vice versa)—is that you are fundamentally asking for everyone else to reshape their (cisheteronormative, oppositionally sexist) view of gender as a whole, and not just, like, slap an asterisk on you personally?

like, there’s never really a clear line for me between ‘i personally want to be sorted under Gender Not Found’ and ‘i want everyone to let go of the general idea that Men and Women are fundamentally two separate categories rather than a continuum,’ and sometimes i get all knotted up and second-guess myself like, does that mean i’m Really just a cis+ person who woke up to the reality distortion imposed by cisheteropatriarchy and got mad abt it?? and other times i think like, if fundamentally i’m only comfortable if the binary gets dismantled, well, what is ‘nonbinary’ if not ‘doesn’t play well with the binary’? slash like. regardless of whether i ““am”” ““nonbinary”” i vehemently resent and reject the desire to binarize me, as i resent and reject the desire to binarize generally. like i think it’s easy to get tripped up by this question of ‘intrinsic gender reality vs political stance’ but. what is the idea of an intrinsic gender reality if not a political stance!!

anyway that’s rehashing stuff we all thoroughly chewed over years ago but like. really this is a post abt how i’m sort of fine having little tits a lot of the time but my being fine with it relies extremely heavily on my deeply held belief that cis men’s little tits and my own little tits are not fundamentally different in kind but rather, again, two points (ha) on a connected human continuum…
