NaPoWriMo Day 2: Write a poem that plays with voice. I’m trying to come to terms with the fact that in my most anxious, painful moments of mental distress, I am not myself—or rather, I am less like the version of myself I want to be. In struggling with mental health, I often feel caught between feeling conscious and in control, and instinctual and tempestuous. So here is that first voice talking to that second voice, trying (sometimes in vain) to calm it down. Also, shout out to @communitylitla for shining a light on poets putting in work! This is where it really begins—the woman before Eve: winged wraith carrying flame unholy

in her belly, dark and maiden-hungry beast of demon teeth—oh, the tales they tell of you:

the first “no,” primordial exile from the birthing Garden—the first to walk by Tree and Temptation

and Adam—foolish Adam—without so much as a backwards glance: how could she

do such a thing? they wondered to themselves. Dreamed up fairy frights of your breasts—laden

with poison, like your words and your hot tongue and your biting lash of independence: such a nasty

woman, they thought to themselves. Who could leave this Eden, this Adam? What else better is out there?

Demon-spirit, fire-lady, woman of infertile womb and abundant death: to you we owe our Nasty.

NaPoWriMo Day 30: In my dreams, my body becomes a utopia

for everything, everything. Come make your home in me. I am full of birds— you will never want for twigs, so come build your nests here, come glue a home together with algae and wild moss and phytoplankton—and why not? Any world aching for beauty should crackle and smoke, phosphoresce from end to end of spectral green.

All the bodies I could be, if only I had the time! Perhaps a cavern of gems stalagmiting up to lick the hard palate of rupturing ceiling; or the wet mouth of a stone lion bathing eternal in a park fountain; or even dying stalk of dandelion—time pinwheeling off me at the first brush of child’s carefree gust of air—all this,

all this and more: reincarnate into some other carbonic boom—bodies becoming and becoming bird and twin-finned fish and tunnel of waking volcano—I could set so much on fire! Could bathe sweet Earth in a tongue of flame, could bear up new bodies from the floor of myself like fruit flowering from ash, could be and become and make everything, everything.
