Remembering Nico who tragically passed away 35 years ago today. 🖤
“I saw that the impression the rock press made on the public was dishonest. It seemed that an attempt had been made to erase her from history. She was a female composer who didn't fit the general categories of rock or folk; she sang her own creations not with feigned passion, but with clarity and eloquence. They only wrote about a drug addict who once fucked a bunch of stars. I've been a witness to abhorrent misogyny in the music business, classical, pop, jazz and experimental scenes for a long time, and I thought it would be useful to study her career in those terms.”

BBYMUTHA SHARES NEW LP SLEEP PARALYSIS
Tumblr media
The defiant Chattanooga-born, Atlanta-based artist and underground heavyweight bbymutha has just shared her new album sleep paralysis—out now via True Panther Records. Fresh off a Washington Post feature that hailed her as a “prolific rapper [whose songs] mix Southern rap menace with the bump and bounce of underground clubs”, bbymutha's highly-anticipated sophomore LP arrives just as she kicks off a 25-date international tour (ticket link here). The album’s title “sleep paralysis” is a literal reference to the syndrome that bbymutha has been afflicted with since childhood – providing a way for her to dive back into memories she didn’t even know she had, an essential component in crafting the album. Defined by her colorful lyricism and genre-bending production, bbymutha has continously stood out among other SoundCloud-era artists since her 2017 hit “Rules” (6M+ Streams), and solidified her name a year later with "Lately" featuring Rico Nasty, as well as the poppy, R&B-infused banger "Sleeping With the Enemy" (9M+ Streams). A viral performance of “Heavy Metal” on COLORS in 2019 followed by the release of bbymutha’s critically-acclaimed debut album Muthaland in 2020 led to subsequent collaborations with Zelooperz, Baby Tate, Na-Kel, Pink Siifu, Kelela, and Fly Anakin on her most recent album, Muthaleficent 3. Earlier this year, bbymutha shared new tracks “gun kontrol” and “go!”, with Pitchfork praising the former for the “allure and force of [bbymutha’s] voice, a thick Tennessee drawl that she wields like a weapon”. bbymutha is fresh off the album's third single “lines”, which HotNewHipHop lauded as “a drug-drenched banger” – continuing to set the tone for sleep paralysis, which bbymutha is using to cement herself as an artist at the forefront of Southern underground scene, while ushering in a new era of self-discovery and reinvention.
sleep paralysis, bbymutha’s full-length debut with independent label True Panther Records, finds her continuing to challenge traditional genre boundaries by experimenting with new sonic landscapes inspired by a trip to the UK. A unique blend of Punk, Electronic, Club, and Rap, sleep paralysis compiles beats from nine different producers including Foisey, Bon Music Vision, and Kilder. A visionary artist who’s steadily built her cult following through a strong run of independent releases, sleep paralysis layers steely and hilarious musings over windswept synths and echoing industrial 808s, bringing both an urgency to bbymutha’s words, and a glint of experimentation to her ever-developing sound. The album’s inspiration was derived from a post-lockdown tour in the UK on which she was introduced to the sounds of 90's Garage and UK dance music, a revelatory moment following a gauntlet of bad luck and a creative rut during the peak of the pandemic. Showcasing why Clash Magazine recently hailed bbymutha as “a staple of the Southern underground scene”, sleep paralysis is an album fascinated with the dreamlike nature of trauma, personal history, and fantasy.

I think what makes Mic's moustache so iconic is the fact he's not the kind of guy who should have a moustache in the first place, at least not in the style he does. When I think pencil moustache I think; chef, gentleman, artist, otherwise refined fellow. Not someone who dresses in all-leather, screams for a living and improv raps. This guy looks like he listens to Beastie Boys, stinks of patchouli oil and knows who Sid Vicious was. From a character design perspective, I could understand a scruffy beard, but not the finely manicured facial hair he canonically possesses. He adopts the 80s Brit Punk style, but I don't know of a single punk musician from that era with a moustache. Why he decided to grow this pointy lip adornment is beyond me. But because of these factors, it really smacks you in the face upon first viewing.
Think of the other contestants of the stache-off polls so far. The king from Katamari. It makes sense for him to have some impressive facial hair, he's a king, he's regal. Dr Wily. He's a doctor. He wears a lab coat, a moustache practically comes with the territory. But Mic? No way.
It's rebellious, it's out there, it's out of the norm. And that, I believe, is what makes Mic truly punk.

Some of my favourite underground music artists, part 3:
I won’t even say anything, just go now on whatever music platform you are using and listen to the EP “for those who suffer from melancholia” in order (do not shuffle) and thank me later.
Cesourius - Alternative
The voice of angels and fairy tales is her voice, her music feels like an elven wood in early morning, so calm and perfect. So I honestly cannot recommend enough cause she is so underrated.
Lily Williams - Acoustic Indie
Modern fairytales written by a ballerina, I know, it can only be either good or amazing, and it is. I honestly don’t know what else to think or say besides… It’s art. So go listen.
Mikayla Geier - Pop
Did you ever thought I wish the Beatles did the soundtrack to La La Land? Well, you should have. Because maybe they didn’t, but there is someone who created just this vibe.
Sid Simons - Rock
It took a really long while, I know, sorry about that… But here it is, we got it. Part 3. I don’t know when and if part three will come out but maybe…

Howdy to all my queers and disabled folks!
As I’m writing this, it’s my birthday, and I just released a new album that I’m super excited about! It’s called “Ganymede Gives Up The Ghost” by Stuffy Doll, and it’s got 17 tracks spanning genres from hip hop to screamy metal to punk to soulful ballads. Songs about a trans superhero, growing up, being sick, friendship, predators, the queer community, and so much more!
It even features the incredible Riley Silverman as the voice of The Narrator! (Not to mention that amazing album art by @ghostcashew)
If you like Hozier, Florence+The Machine, Slipknot, clipping., Lorde, Against Me! or honestly just any good music, I think this album has something for you.
Since it’s my birthday, I’m asking that you consider buying it on my Bandcamp, but if you can’t afford it, just stream it wherever you listen to music and please share it around. I’m putting all the money I’ve made so far into advertising this album because I really believe in it.
Thank you, love you, and stay safe, Dolls.

Bequeath the Basement Bangers!
Do you enjoy music so niche that one must squint through opera glasses to find the niche?
Interested in discovering new music? Do more people need to know about a disco ska metal band from Lake Wobegon? Do you want to make fun of cringefail artists that flopped? Or perhaps you have a penchant for pretending to be a fan and using elaborate schemes to promote your music...
Then this is the tournament for you, pal!
Submission Rules
This is for songs with under 3000 views/streams (on whatever platform). (It was going to be <1000, but I wanted to be able to put in OrcaMind songs. Basically just the less popular the better.) Songs with more views will still be considered, though. It depends on how many submissions I get. It’s preferable to be able to listen to the song online somewhere. Since obscurity is key, though, inaccessible songs on physical or lost media still qualify, they just might not get many votes.
Submit songs in this form or the ask box. (The linked form is preferred, to keep it organized, but whatever.)
Submissions will close on… I don’t know, July 4th maybe? Depends on submission quantity.
How this will work
I don’t want to deal with complicated brackets, so the bracket will be single-elimination, and will have a power of 2 (or maybe 3, depending?) number of songs. In determining which songs will fill that number, the following will be considered (in order of priority):
Obscurity
Submitter enthusiasm/provided description and reasoning
How good I think it is
Propaganda is allowed and encouraged.
These folks couldn’t compete in the big leagues, so now we’ll make them compete against each other, but for no reward!
Inspired by stuff like: @musical-song-competition @best-fnaf-song-competition @fictionaladoptionpolls @4thwallbreakersshowdown @obscure-hottie-fight @hit-song-showdown (Mine is like the opposite of that) @guess-that-ship @purpleboytournament @arrowtossingtournament @christian-denominations-poll @theater-kid-throwdown @obscuremilfoff @ponysongbracket @weird-song-bracket @songshowdown @fuck-you-upmusicbracket
