CALLING ALL RAGGEDY FANS!

Many fans have pondered the same question: What if Raggedy Ann had a modern cartoon series? Something similar in tone to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Littlest Pet Shop (2012), or Monster High? Sadly, the Raggedy Ann franchise has been pretty inactive in recent years, with only a few doll and merchandise releases and a small group of loyal fans sticking around.

But what if we could change that?

Most of Raggedy Ann’s copyright is in the public domain, and the Gruelles are pretty chill when it comes to people using the character, so copyright won’t be much of an issue. The only obstacle would be finding a team to brainstorm ideas, write scripts, create concept art, and assemble a pitch bible to present to potential platforms.

That’s where we come in!

We’re currently developing a brand new cartoon centering on Raggedy Ann, her little brother Raggedy Andy, and all their friends as they embark on both fantastical and wholesome adventures in the Deep Deep Woods, all while learning about the power of love, tolerance, and acceptance along the way. The current plan is to set up a Discord server for people to brainstorm potential characters, locations, and episode concepts for the show, while artists can create concept art based on our overall vision for the show. We aim for this project to be self-paced, all set in an encouraging environment that prioritizes mental health and doing what makes us happy.

We don’t have any plans for voice acting or animation at the moment, and we’re definitely not aiming for a big network at this time. Our only hope is that this show will be able to give Raggedy Ann some spotlight and expand her reach to new audiences that would’ve otherwise never heard of her.

The sexual/sensual coding in Aaravos and Viren's interactions: The Sequel

Also known as "Why I don't like the revelation in s5."

Trigger warning--This discussion is going to mention manipulation/coercion, homophobic stereotypes, and sexually-charged abusive/invasive behavior under the read more so please proceed with caution.

Alrighty so before I start talking about tdp s5's major reveal in the Viren + Aaravos relationship I'd like to discuss the interactions they had with each other before and after the reveal and my thoughts on them. Here we go:

First thing I'd like to note is that Aaravos is still showing the creepy, invasive behavior that concerned me in my original post. Throughout the scene he and Viren share he:

Touches Viren

Invades Viren's space

And manipulates/controls Viren's body

And in addition to controlling Viren's body, we've also find out that Aaravos can straight up move Viren's very soul if he wants.

And like I addressed in my previous post, he does all of this without asking for Viren's permission and/or showing any care for Viren's wishes--hell, he explicitly ignores Viren when the latter says he doesn't want to be in the prison with him.

That being said, these actions alone aren't the most concerning issue for me; that isn't to say that they're not concerning to me all, but it's nothing that hasn't been done before in their relationship--it's nothing new is what I'm trying to say.

However, the revelation about Sir Sparklepuff being their child is new--and imo it adds a whole new level of creepiness to the relationship.

Allow me to rehash what went down a bit:

Aaravos reveals to Viren that in order for his resurrection to be permanent, he needs to preform a spell that requires the "blood of his child"--Viren protests and claims that he'd never sacrifice his children.

Aaravos responds that he never expected him to hurt Claudia or Soren and reveals that he has a third child he can use--

Viren is confused and claims he doesn't have any other children--then Aaravos reveals that Sir Sparklepuff is his and Aaravos' child

He tells Viren that Sir Sparklepuff is there for him to use for the spell and that he will teach Viren how to use his "living essence" to reclaim both his life and his "future."

There's a lot (and I mean A LOT) of things about this scene/reveal that worry me; I'll try to sum it up neatly, but it's probably going to be pretty lengthy regardless. Here we go:

Concern 1) Viren had no idea that Sir Sparklepuff with his child, but Aaravos did

No matter how many angles I try to see it from, this feels violating to me; considering how Viren didn't know what the spell would do and how desperate he was at the time, his willingness to perform the original spell is dubious enough already--to then have it revealed that the spell produced a child that's biologically his really disturbs me. It might just be my opinion, but I feel that it adds a level of predatory to Aaravos that's unnecessary at best and horrifying at worst.

Concern 2) The lengths Aaravos has gone to keep Viren alive (and presumedly on his side).

This includes:

a) Telling Claudia the spell that would resurrect Viren.

b) Preserving Viren's body for 2 years while Claudia gathered everything necessary

c) When they first met, he chose a spell that would create a being that would not only allow them to communicate, but could also be used to resurrect Viren if the need arose.

Now assuming the writers planned this all from the beginning (I have my doubts, ngl) this shows a great deal of effort and premeditation on Aaravos's part to make sure Viren sticks around--whatever his plans may be, Viren must play a pretty big role in them or else he would have just moved on when Viren died the first time. (It's either that or he has some strange sort of fondness for Viren, which leads me to Concern # 3)

Concern 3) As of now, we have absolutely no info about how their relationship is going to be portrayed going forward

While Viren's fate is a bit ambiguous at the end of s5, I'm 90% confident that he's going to live through s6 in one way or another and assuming I'm right and that happens, there are a few paths the writers could take in how they depict the relationship

Option A) They sweep everything under the rug and pretend the sexual coding in the relationship never existed.

Option B) They portray Aaravos as a complete monster who was just using Viren for one thing or another and has now discarded him since he got what he wanted from him.

Option C) They portray Aaravos as having some dark sort of attachment to Viren--one that won't allow him to let Viren "leave him"

All these possibilities are iffy imho, but I'm honestly not sure which would be worse.

Going with Option A feels lazy--like the writers don't want to deal with the dark themes they chose to put in and decided to take the easy out.

(Granted, it wouldn't be the first time the show has dropped important plot points/developments--no one seems to have found out that Viren and Aaravos sent the assassins at the end of s2, for example--but it would still feel cowardly to me)

Going with Options B or C both feel gross--with Option B it feels like Aaravos would be the epitome of the Predatory Queer-Coded Villain--he would have effectively used and abused Viren in a violating way (i.e coerced/forced him to bear their child) and abandoned him once he was done with him. It would be pretty hard to make a case for him having a "kind side" after that.

That being said, Option C isn't really any better--Aarvos would still be following the "Predatory Villain" stereotype, the only difference would be that he'd fall more into the role of an abusive partner than the "pure evil" role that some older queer-coded villains were placed in.

TLDR: I don't like the revelation of Sir Sparklepuff being Viren and Aaravos' child because I feel it follows the reoccurring theme of possessive/violating actions from Aaravos toward Viren that I've worried about all the way back in s3.

Update on Orange Poll Dress and Roman's Casual Look Mini project

Just a quick update for you all about how these projects have been progressing, plus a sneak peak on the next dress I want to make.

On both of these projects: I am heading back to school this week, and classes start next week, so they're on hold until I can get adjusted to the new schedule. Shouldn't take too long, but you should expect to hear about the Roman mini project before the poll dress.

Orange Poll Dress

So, this dress has had the least amount of progress since I last posted about fabric scavenging on 12/24. I haven't had the time to go and get some fresh fabrics, and the fabrics I have were really leaving me... uninspired. You'd think that a dress which I had other people pick out all the design elements for would be easy to make, but, uh... not really, unfortunately. I'm working on it!

It's on pause until I can go to a fabric store with some friends to get properly re-inspired and get a good idea going! I'm hoping to give you an update on it in the next month (so, mid February).

Roman's Causal Look Mini project

Okay, on the list of things to do for this project now includes getting a proper master post up, haha.

This outfit has a few elements that still need completion.

The jacket is done!

I started making a corset top via the 'wrap yourself in plastic and duct tape to make a pattern' method and it didn't go very well, so I'm scrapping that to try something else. The top still needs some editing.

I found a cool mesh shirt with floral patterns I'm going to use as an undershirt, though!

The skirt looks awesome and just needs to have an elastic waist put in, and then it'll be good to go.

I have the coolest boots for the outfit and I'm so pleased.

So, in short, I have minor adjustments to make on the skirt and a corset-inspired blouse to make, and then it'll be ready. I also have a tiara I've been wanting an excuse to wear so this'll be great.

My goal is to complete this cosplay by the end of February.

Upcoming project

Spring is coming! The next dress I make I am very excited for. It's going to be a sundress for Emile Picani, based on the fanfiction Love And Other Fairy Tales, mostly because I want a sundress I can wear. My goal is to make it in the month of March so it's ready for springtime in the mountains.

(No one say anything about Patton's wedding dress from LAOFT it's in a bag in the back of my closet begging me to work on it I'll get to it eventually I promise)

CRADLE ANIMATION KICKSTARTER LIVE

So I haven't seen anyone posting about this on Tumblr yet today. If that's because I'm not following whoever posted it then we should rectify that mistake.

Now, those of my followers who've read Cradle are all already excited. For those who haven't read Cradle, some context:

Cradle is the gold standard leader of the slowly growing Western Progression Fantasy genre. Inspired by genre's such as Wuxia and Xianxia, and every Shonen anime where the protagonist grows in power over the length of the series.

The series begins with Unsouled, and follows the character Lindon as he progresses from the lowest possible starting point to the peak of the magical martial arts system of his world over the course of 12 fast paced books.

As the series went on, each Cradle book started to top the charts upon release, with its popularity quickly growing among the Kindle Unlimited reading audience. One thing remains in common among pretty much every reader I've talked to –their first reaction to whichever Cradle moment hooked them has been: "Holy shit this would be so cool if it was animated."

Now we have the chance to see that. Author Will Wight and team have partnered with filmmaker Jay Oliva and his studio Lex+Otis to bring Cradle to life. If Jay's name isn't immediately recognizable for you (it wasn't for me,) you should check out his IMDB page. Its seriously impressive and includes a bunch of popular animations such as dozens of DC animations and nostalgic favorites like Jackie Channel adventures, amongst other household name animations.

We'll be getting some animation no matter what, but the stretch goals for this kickstarter could see some really cool work coming out of this project, up to a full limited series.

Not only does this kickstarter directly fund the animation project, but it opens up the possibilities of a bigger studio or streaming service getting their eyes on the potential of Cradle and potentially picking it up in the manner of Vox Machina.

Cradle has the potential to open up an entirely new genre of stories among general Western audiences who may have never experienced this style of story before, and a Cradle animation has the ability to draw in whole groups of people who prefer visual media to written or audio.

because @vettelracing​ said I could always make a post, and I’m not immune to peer pressure : tattoo tour! I immediately made an appointment when I turned 18, and my first tattoo was a koi fish in watercolour style wrapping around my lower left leg (ankle to a few cm below my knee.) the artist was amazing and overall a great experience for a first tattoo. I also have a little tulip right above my ankle, which I got done right before moving to Canada. Gotta rep the Dutch aesthetic, I guess? On my lower right leg I have a two headed snake with violets and forget-me-not flowers as a memorial piece to my twin (violets being the February birth flower.) A bee (an inside joke) a kingfisher bird, a peony flower, and a mushroom. The mushroom is an homage to my paternal family, seeing as they used to be mushroom farmers back in the day! There’s a fox on my right ribs (don’t recommend that as a placement. And this is the only tattoo of mine I’m very meh about. I forget it’s there half the time.) My lower left arm has a branch on it, and a maple seed right above my elbow facing back (for my paternal grandfather, who used to walk me up to the castle in my hometown when I was a kid so we could toss them down and watch them spin)

My right arm has two acorn (for my maternal grandfather, who took me to pick acorns in fall and taught me how to whistle with the caps) with the same placement as the maple seed. For my lower right arm I have the wand of my favourite HP character (Gilderoy Lockhart, if you’re wondering.) But since no one knows what his wand looks like it’s generally assumed it’s a sword. Also yes I’m aware JKR is disgusting and I do not support her, I just have my reasons, okay.

Then, on my right collarbone, I have a little ladybug. My best friend has the same one on her left. I also have a fat baby bird on my left shoulder, which is also dedicated to her.

Hi!

Filly Funtasia visited Hong Kong’s toy fair in January, and they want to tell something to their fans:

-Covid-19 affected the whole brand strategy heavily in 2020-2022;

-However, they’re still working on the cartoon. Not only on episodes 27-39 (’third’ season for China, as they halve each episode for release domestically) that we’re still waiting for, but also on episodes 40-52 (’fourth’ season)!

-They’re also planning to distribute merchandise and toys of Filly Funtasia in countries other than China. They just need clients, deals and some more time.

-They hope to achieve actually fruitful results in 2023, unlike some short time ago.   

That’s it :)

The movie that I found 2 mentions in incredibly outdated (by dates) tables of plans a few years ago is still not mentioned in any way, but I’ll be hoping they’ll also work on it and it’s not cancelled. It was supposed to come out after last episodes of the show (that will be 40-52, unless they’ll want to make more!).
