small rant on the scene of neville’s boggart and jkr in general lol
tbh sev and remus r my fav chars ijdk how to feel abt the whole boggart scene? like i dont think he shouldve humiliated sev that way, but we do need to remember that jkr is transphobic as shit unfortunately. i cant ever imagine remus as being bigoted or transphobic/queerphobic though? we still need to remember that this was the 90s, and reps/scenes such as these were common in 90s/2000s media and the years before that. this scene also very much feels like jkr simply projecting on her fav character because it very much goes against what we know of remus and sev; remus felt bad for sev, but couldnt bring himself to tell his friends to stop because he thought they would drop him. he tried to tell them to stop once, but they didn’t listen, and he never tried again. he never participated in the bullying, nor helped snape; just watched from the sidelines, as he didn’t want sev to think he was like his friends/found family but also didnt want them to think he was 'betraying' them or something.
i like to imagine many things in hp in my own version of canon, and that involves this scene; i prefer to have it be remus telling neville to imagine snape doing something very out-of-character for him, which would be funny. for example singing, or dancing, etc..
in my books (no pun intended), he only told neville to imagine severus wearing his grandma’s clothes as his 'riddikulus' because the way nev’s grandma dresses looks funny (at least from remus’ pov). and just imagining severus dressing in a way completely different from how he usually dresses is funny, not because he’s in drag. i wouldnt even rlly consider that drag? while it was likely jkr trying to make fun of drag queens i dont think that was remus’ intention (does that make sense?). i think he told him to imagine sev wearing his grandma’s clothes bc nev’s grandma admittedly dresses in a way that looks funny/weird on her as well, and imagining such a serious and all-black man such as severus wearing it would be funny because of how out-of-character that is. i might just be biased bc remus is one of my comfort characters, and i’m just delusional, but hey.
the whole boggart scene in general makes me uncomfortable as a trans and queer person, and because i view sev as trans-coded or at least queer-coded. but i also view remus as queer-coded (not only bc of the lycanthropy, it’s his general vibe and the fact jkr /neg wrote him in the same way that she writes the 'good' hp mothers, not to mention his interactions with sirius and the fact david thewlis and the director themselves thought he was gay, but the allegory of his lycanthropy being his queerness also makes sense in an uncomfortable way? because if you take remus being outed as a werewolf, then quitting his job as a teacher [one of the only jobs he was ever able to get because of who he is] since he knows the parents will view him as a danger to the children, it sounds like a reference to homophobia. a very bad and admittedly anti-queer accidental queer-coding, but still. anyways we’re getting side tracked), and i genuinely cannot bring myself to see him as bigoted or in any way discriminating. to me that whole scene was just jkr projecting, which i think she unfortunately does a lot.. ew..
either way. the scene made me uncomfortable because it brings me back to my middle school, but both remus and sev are my fav characters and both remus making fun of snape in that way and snape outing him as a werewolf were shitty things to do and i don’t know whose part i should take.
when in doubt lets just blame all the problems on jkr. i hate her. i hope she perishes. the rest of u have good day tho ily, let me know what u think lol

This might be a hot take but I get so tired of the internets mentality of IT'S EITHER OR.
Either you buy the game nd u therefore don't give a shit about trans pple or you never touch the HP fandom w a ten foot pole again and you're ✨clensed✨
I understand both sides of this conflict so deeply.
As a nonbinary person born in a country where you still have to get sterilised in order to change your legal gender, I can come close to the outrage the trans community is feeling at people so easily compromising their principles and support for them over something like this.
But I also remember the toughest parts of my life as a neurodivergent person being stuck in depression nd anxiety and my fandoms being ny o ly reason to live and keep going. We can't control our hyperfixations and sometimes they're all we have.
All that being said I believe THERE IS A FUCKING MIDDLE GROUND.
You can absolutely, privately or publicly, consume or create HP related content without monetarily supporting JKR. JUST PIRATE THE GAME. Wait a while if you have to, you don't have to abandon your interests but you can do the bare minimum to make sure your consumption doesn't do more harm than it absolutely has to. PIRATE THE BOOKS. PIRATE THE GAMES. THE MOVIES. DON'T BUY OFFICIAL MERCH. DIY YOUR OWN MERCH. Buy stuff from fan artists whose wiews you know and support. CREATE FAN CONTENT THAT IMPROVES ON JKRS STEREOTYPE FILLED INTERPRETATIONS OF THE CHARACTERS.
The content is *yours*. Rip it from that bitch's hands and RUN WITH IT but for the love of god DON'T CONTINUE GIVING HER MONEY AND PUBLICITY
IT'S THE LEAST YOU CAN DO for your fellow trans folk out here.

Watching positive reaction videos has really loosened us up a bit, when it comes to characters or fandoms or versions of a series that we dislike.
Like, assuming that it’s not being celebrated for bigoted reasons... racism, queermisia, etc... or financially supporting someone who is a bigot? Seeing the sheer joy and love in someone’s eyes when they see their favorite or get really into a story is priceless. In the best of ways.
We don’t care if we hate the character, or pairing/ship, or the series. You love it, random person geeking out on YouTube. It brings you happiness, or some measure of peace or comfort. And that is a precious thing. So even if it’s something we dislike? Or actively can’t stand? We will 100% defend your right to love it, and we will try not to shittalk it around you.
We just want you to be happy, and feel some small bit of relief from real life. And if that means supporting you in your love for some blorbo we hate, or smiling and nodding at what anime boys you wanna see kiss, or ignoring how badly an adaptation did with the source material... okay.
We just ask the same favor in return.

You’ll Catch a Cold (S.S)
No hate will be tolerated over a fic that gives no money to JKR. I also haven’t even played Hogwarts Legacy I just find the little Golden Retriever Slytherin to be so cute he’s just *chefs kiss*
Anyway, no warnings for this it’s pure fluff. The reader is only referred to as They/them so its gn! Just fluff, the reader is a hufflepuff because I just love the trope and it works well with like a little joke i added into this. There’s no plot from the game the plot is literally from the great Hawke mind. anyway.
Tumblr media
The sound of hurried footsteps filled the cobbled halls as a frantic Slytherin made his way around his fellow students. He had been looking around for about five minutes now, scanning faces and listening to conversations to find his friend. Normally, it wasn’t that hard to find you, you never strayed too far away from the little group you had formed, unless it was time for bed or if you ever had different classes. Even then, however, it was hard to see either of you without the other. Finding a Hufflepuff should never be THAT hard, right? “Yellow isn’t hard to miss, especially paired with black. Like a bumblebee.” Sebastian thought to himself, except, like a hive of bumblebees, there were a lot of black and yellow robes around him, paired with the other house colours, his head would soon spin. Eventually, Sebastian made his way to a somewhat empty hall, and found his other friend, Ominis, by one of the doors. He wasn’t quite sure what Ominis was doing, but by the way he suddenly turned and headed over to Sebastian, it seemed as if he was waiting for his friend.
“Ominis! What are you doing here?” Sebastian questioned, still looking around in hopes of catching you. Ominis shrugged and took out his wand, “I figured we would meet for supper, but I heard your footsteps a bit away and figured you’d show up here eventually.” Sebastian shook his head in disbelief. “Also,” Ominis continued, “I didn’t hear another set of footsteps, you’re not with y/n?” Ominis’ question caused Sebastian to sigh and run a hand through his hair. “Yeah, that’s the problem. I can’t find them.” Ominis furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, “You can’t find them? But it’s near time to eat, we always have this schedule, it’s not like them to just not show up.” Sebastian nodded and began to walk again to continue his search, followed by Ominis.
The two eventually ran into Poppy, a fellow Hufflepuff and friend of yours. “Oh! Hello you two,” she says as walks away from the window she was staring out of. Ominis nodded his head in the direction of her voice, and Sebastian waved quickly. “Everything okay? You seem a little tense, Sebastian.” She asked, smirking as she watched him fiddle around with his sleeves as he continued once again to look around. Ominis, knowing how Sebastian was acting, spoke. “We can’t find y/n, I found him speeding around looking for them.” Poppy’s smirk grew even wider as she watched the Slytherin. “Aw, did you lose your emotional support Hufflepuff?” She joked. Sebastian whipped his head towards her in a flash, “What? What is that supposed to mean?” His face was flushed yet filled with confusion. Poppy could only snicker in response, and Ominis seemed to lightly nod in agreement with her statement. “You never act like that,” she shrugged, “Do you need to keep them near you around the clock? Keep it up and people will start thinking you’re dating.” She continued to joke, turning to look out the window. Sebastian was left in a mess of stuttering and brain fog as he tried to find a quip to throw back, only to get out “it’s- now- you know- Ominis, tell her!” Ominis, being put on the spot during what was a very entertaining conversation, could only shake his head and hide a smile.
“Oh dear,” Poppy said as she continued to look out the window. Sebastian walked closer and peered outside. During their conversation, the sky had begun to be covered with dark clouds full of water, and the sound of faint thunder had caught the Hufflepuff’s attention. It had begun to pour with rain, a strong contrast to what was a bright day with warm air. The glass had already begun to fog up from the cold rain, and Poppy had begun to look worried. “It’s just some rain, nothing to worry about.” Sebastian stated, moving away from the window and making his way back to his friend. Poppy frowned as she turned back to the Slytherins. “Maybe for you, but it just turns out that y/n went outside not too long ago to ask Professor Garlick about an assignment, and they haven’t returned yet.” Sebastian’s eyes widened as he titled his head slightly. “You mean to say that you knew where they were and instead decided to pick on me?” Ominis snorted behind Sebastian. “That means they are out there, probably without an umbrella or jacket since it was nice out.” Ominis continued, “Surly they know it’s raining now, but it will be a cold and wet walk back here.” Sebastian nodded in response, “Unless they ran.” It was Poppy’s turn to shake her head, “The grass would be slippery. If they slip and fall, they will just be dirtier and wetter, it’s not safe to run.” Sebastian fumbled with his robe and lifted his hood. “I suppose they didn’t wear their robes out either?” Poppy shook her head. A sigh left Sebastian as looked outside once again. “Okay, Ominis, stay here and wait until I get back, we don’t need all three of us to be soaked.” Ominis nodded in response. “I’ll go fetch towels for the two of you them,” Poppy stated, heading off to find where some towels may be stored. Sebastian huffed as he neared the door and shook his head, preparing himself for the cold rain that eagerly waited for him.
As he stepped out, his robes were immediately drenched, and he had to speedwalk down the yard towards the Herbology classroom. Careful not to slip, he shielded his eyes and looked around, hoping that he’d catch you on your way back so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way down, but you were still nowhere to be seen. A few moments later, Sebastian found himself nearing the greenhouse, and a sigh of relief left his lips. When he made it to the front doors, he huddled under the small roof-like lip above the doors, which poked away from the building enough to keep the rain from falling onto him.
Inside the greenhouse, you stood over a desk, eyes sparkling as you listened to the wonderful voice of what you could only say was your favourite Professor. You hadn’t been paying attention to the class that day, zoning out every now and then for reasons you couldn’t name. You were sure you had gotten enough sleep, even if you did go to bed a little late. You didn’t think there was anything distracting you either, but when you zoned back into the class, Professor Garlick was assigning work to be done that evening, and you didn’t want to bother any of your classmates and ask what you had missed. Especially not Sebastian, who would probably tease you for zoning out, and then tease you for overthinking too much. So, you had visited the Greenhouse to get a clearer picture of what you were supposed to do, which had been taking longer than expected. You already had the answers to your questions, yet somehow you found yourself discussing different types of plants and when the best time to grow them was. You hadn’t even realized it began to rain, until a loud clap of thunder sounded through the sky, leaving you to jump in response. “Oh dear, it seems that a storm has made its way over.” Professor Garlick began, “you should head back to the castle now, it should be near time for supper as well, and I don’t want you missing that.” You nodded is response and began making your way to the door, giving the professor one final wave goodbye as you walked out.
Turning around as you closed the door, you were met face-to-face with the one and only Sebastian Sallow, and the close proximity and sudden appearance caused you to yelp and jump back, hitting the doors you had just closed. “Sebastian! Don’t do that, I beg of you.” You gasped, placing a hand over your chest. Sebastian smiled in response, “I try not to, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.” You shook your head in disbelief, droplets of water already dripping from your hair. “What does that even mean in this context?” You asked as you tilted your head to take a look at the sky. Sebastian only shrugged in response before changing the subject. “Forget about that, what are you doing out here? It’s pouring down rain.” You chuckled at the obvious statement. “I needed some help with understanding the assignment, so I figured I’d just go and ask the Professor.” Sebastian shook his head, already knowing the reason thanks to Poppy. “Yeah, I know that. But we’re in the same class, you could have just asked me for help.” You laughed, “Do me a favour and stop flattering yourself, Sebastian.” Sebastian’s face shifted to one of confusion, unsure about what you meant. “What’s that supposed to mean?” You shook your head once again, “Nothing. Anyway, you would have teased me about it, like always.” Sebastian nodded and smiled, “Well, of course I would have, but I still would have helped you. And now look, it’s pouring. You don’t even have your robes or an umbrella! You would have caught a cold if I hadn’t shown up.” You laughed in response as you moved closer to him, shivering. “My hero, of course.” Sebastian grinned as he tucked you closer into him and covered both of you with his robe.
It was awkward to walk so close to each other as you hid away from the rain, both of you slipping every now and then. You even yelped and grabbed onto Sebastian as you tripped over a hidden stone, causing Sebastian to slip as well and send the two of you to the ground. “Are you ok? You’re not hurt, are you?” Sebastian asked as he hovered over you, blocking the rain. Your eyes were shut tightly, and your fists had parts of Sebastian’s uniform clutched tightly. You wiggled the leg that had made the initial impact with the stone, and felt no pain, causing you to sigh in relief and loosen your grip. “Yeah, I’m good. Just dirty now.” You laughed, causing Sebastian to laugh in turn as he helped you up. You kept walking towards the castle, oblivious of the flush that lit up Sebastian’s cheeks after the fall. When the two of you finally made it through the doors, you were greeted by Poppy and Ominis, who each had a towel and a new set of robes for the two of you.
You quickly excused yourself to dry off and change, Sebastian doing the same. Poppy had decided to go with you to the Hufflepuff dorm, in case she didn’t grab the right robes for you. Ominis waited in the Slytherin common room for Sebastian, and the pairs met back up outside the dining hall. You shook your head lightly as your damp hair tickled your neck, moving your hands up and down your arms to warm yourself up. Sebastian’s hair was still damp as well and hung over his forehead. You quickly tried to sweep it back up so it wouldn’t be in the way, satisfied when you started to see it curling back up as it air dried. “Telling me I would catch a cold, yeah right. Look at you, being out there for who knows how long. Now you’re the one with the cold.” You mumbled to yourself as you fixed Sebastian’s clothes and then turned to walk into the Dining Hall. Poppy snickered as she watched Sebastian’s face darken, a followed after you after getting one last remark out, “Definitely an emotional support Hufflepuff. But what kind of emotional support, we may never know.” Sebastian was left in shock from the whole ordeal, only to be brought back to reality by Ominis nudging him in the side. “Poppy’s right, you know.” He quipped. Sebastian shook his head, “It’s just a weird way to say Best Friend.” Ominis laughed in response. “No, it’s just another way to say Relationship.” And with that, Ominis walked into the dining hall to join you at the table. Sebastian shook his head once more, mentally preparing himself as he walked into the dining hall after you.
hehehe i like writing. And I also like writing for pretty people. Anyway, I can write more fics if you want, all you need to do is ask!

Something that frustrates me about the Harry Potter conversation is a lot of people missing the point behind the motivation to boycott it. They seem weirdly focused on the content of HP when it's actually... not that bad? It's not perfect, in fact a lot of aspects are pretty fucking problematic and worthy of discussion, but not uniquely so by the standards of the fantasy genre. Yes, I know the goblins are clearly drawing on anti-semitic tropes. Yes, the house elf situation is fucked. Yes, lots of not-like-other-girls-style misogyny. Yes, Cho Chang was a fucking disaster of racism. I KNOW THIS ALREADY! I'm not an idiot and Harry Potter fans were talking about this for far longer than JKR has been a TERF. But I'm also a fan of the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age and the Witcher and a shitton of isekai anime and tons of other fantasy medias which are so much worse. Harry Potter is only moderately problematic by the standards of most popular fantasy media, especially for the mainstream standards of the time period it was written. Worthy of criticism, but not dropping it entirely. And actually reading HP and looking back at JKR's behaviour at the time, much of it seems largely unintentional, just that JKR drew on a lot of fantasy tropes that she didn't properly examine as well as her own unexamined biases and she had some flawed understandings of progressivism that were fair for its day but don't fly now, but doesn't seem malicious. The actual authorial intent at least seems to be pretty progressive at least, even if the execution wasn't the best. And sure, it's not a masterwork but there's a reason it connected to so many people, even if a lot of it was luck and timing. We don't have to ignore that and doing so feels dishonest.
I'm just so annoyed when people try to shit on the contents because they're missing the point and confuse the actual problem in a way that weakens their argument. I don't give Harry Potter money anymore because JKR crossed some lines for me in real life, totally separate from Harry Potter as a piece of media, and I don't want to fund her bullshit because she is so influential it is hurting people. The content of her books is utterly irrelevant to this decision. She could have penned a goddamn magnum opus and it wouldn't have mattered. So I'm sick of people bringing up books that are "better" or ragging on the contents of Harry Potter because none of that is the point and never was the point and it comes across as just taking advantage of a shitty situations to dunk on a popular thing or those who enjoyed it. Yeah, it was a mediocre fantasy series. But it hit the right emotional escapist buttons in a lot of kids even if it had the moral nuance and depth of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anti-drug PSA. Having to drop it sucked for a lot of people because it can't be replaced and yelling about how bad the writing was doesn't change that because it never was about quality. JKR's TERF transformation was in many ways a betrayal of JKR's intended audience considering how the text preached acceptance and love and starred an abused, unwanted child getting to go to magic school where he's special. Pretending Harry Potter should be dropped because its content has issues obscures the actual problem of a raging transphobic having money and influence and that not everything created by bad people is poor quality so boycotts might require giving up access to things you actually like or are valuable and that's not always an easy decision to make.
JKR was a probably decent person with fairly liberal politics when she wrote Harry Potter. The books, while imperfect, are not more horrible or full of problems a dozen other popular fantasy properties. JKR become a TERF later in life and while she may have had ingrained transphobia prior to this when she wrote Harry Potter, that is not the same as the virulent hate-movement she's part of now and we should recognize how easy it is for people to get drawn into hate-movements. Any argument to boycott should be about how she's using her money and influence to affect real life laws and attitudes unless you want to try and get people to also drop half the fantasy genre.

Hate seeing people say that Transandrophobia isn't real because, in their words, the "androphobia" isn't something people in real life face.
Now. Maybe this is because when I see this opinion, it's attached to someone who is either transfem, AMAB, or who has only ever lived in incredibly liberal areas.
Meaning: They do not have the life experience to speak on that.
It's simple, I can use myself as an easy example: I grew up on the west side of the US. My extended family and parents were very Christian, very conservative. The community I grew up in was in turn the same- very conservative, very Christian, very fundamentalist. Certain Disney movies were banned from the house for featuring witchcraft, or other "morally reprehensible" things. DISNEY MOVIES.
With this background, I'm sure you can tell where this was headed: I can clearly remember being in the pharmacy with my mother. I was small. I saw a lady with what I now know is a pixie cut- incredibly short hair, bright bold pink. Her girlfriend was there, and her own hair was incredibly butch- like they went to a sports clips and asked for what the guy next to them was getting. I was amazed- I'd never seen a woman that looked like that before. I voiced so with awe and wonder to my mother. I was supposed to get a haircut in an hour. "I want that! She looks so pretty and nice"
Who was visibly disgusted. Grabbing me, yanking me away, muttering "no. You don't want to look like that. Let's go."
Fast forward a few years. I'm too young to be drinking a beer, my uncle has stayed up late. We are watching music videos and sharing interests, when we see a rather masc looking woman in a video. He's disgusted. He makes an offhand joke about how she needs to be reminded of her feminine ways. I know what violations he's implying so vividly. He opens up about his fantasy of hatecriming two butch "women" he saw. I'm too afraid to speak.
There's a debate in church. Should women be allowed to wear above the knee shorts? We really didn't like that they can wear pants. Really, the pastor says in his sermon- it's the woman's job to maintain her feminine nature, in opposition to her husband's masculine nature. These blurring lines aren't good for people.
And- I don't want to get into the people I've known who've been hurt, abused, forcefully feminized, beaten for being masculine- the men that feel entitled to their bodies, because they feel entitled to a say in how they present.
The reason you don't see the abuse for being masculine, is because you come from a world where it's widely accepted in ways that not every culture, not every state or country has.
Gnc women, trans men, transmasc nonbinary people- if you're in the wrong place, born to the wrong family, you may never be safe enough to wear pants. You may not be able to cut your hair. Or be anything less than the perfect, ideal woman.
You get punished for not being what you have been assigned. For the act of defiance against others perception, you can be killed.
So, yeah. There's a lot of androphobia. There's a LOT of fear of the masculine. It just comes out in ways you aren't expecting, as someone who hasn't had to experience it. You don't know what to look for. Where to look. It's everywhere but you can be blind to it if you're insulated enough.
Hell- even terfs are falling into severe androphobia. It's their whole motto. What am I, if not a failed woman to them? Mutilating my perfect feminine form? Being a man is the ultimate crime to these people. Are you really telling me JKRs very public campaign hasn't made life hell for ALL of us? We are all losing healthcare due to this.

I’m so curious about Wizarding fashion. JKR isn’t very physically descriptive- we just know that wizards wear robes, which are outlandish to muggles, and pointy hats, but what does that really mean? What kind of robe? Magical fashion clearly isn’t very gendered, since Harry remarks on a man at the Quidditch World Cup wearing a dress and insisting that it’s unisex (certainly not the case in Britain at the time), but we don’t have any other parameters. Keeping in mind the uniform from the movies, and the fact that in SWM, Snape isn’t wearing any trousers, here’s what I think wizards wear:
1. Flowing silhouettes and cloaks; clearly, wizards love a good statement cloak. Think tassels and frills (not like Ron’s Yule Ball fit!), massive extended sleeves and lots of draping.
2. Skirts: let’s be honest, just one singular robe, without any layering, doesn’t give us much to work with. Skirts go with the general silhouette, explain why the World Cup wizard thought muggle men wore dresses, and keep with the no-trousers thing from SWM. I’m South Asian, so I like to have a little fun with it and think of wizards in ghararas (my favourite item of clothing); the Wizarding World is quite insular, travel is relatively unrestricted (hello, they have magic!), everyone has a common enemy in muggles (and other species- goblins, house-elves) etcetera, so race probably doesn’t function the same way and I headcanon a lot of cross-cultural exchange. Plus, wizarding fashion isn’t restricted by weather- they have warming charms- so wearing clothes made for hot climates in England, for example, wouldn’t be a problem.
Plus, I actually think saris are a natural fancy dress option- flowy, drapey, colourful. Speaking of which-
3. If there’s one fanon idea that I hate (aside from fanon!Sirius, of course), it’s this image of wizards (specifically high society wizards) as reserved. Sorry, did we read the same books? Wizards, even posh, rich wizards, like the Malfoys and Blacks, are camp and very outlandish. They do house-elf taxidermy, they keep their wands in canes. Just because Hogwarts uniforms are black doesn’t mean that people dress like they’re in mourning all the time. People can be total snobs and obsessed with their image and still wear bright pink, insane robes, because guess what? They have different social conventions than we do. Men and women dress basically the same, so there is no reason to believe that a man wearing a flowing robe would be against the norm. I say this as someone who believes misogyny and homophobia are well and truly alive in Wizarding society, especially in pureblooded families where the emphasis is on continuing the line; they definitely exist, but they probably look different.
4. My personal obsession and headcanon: rich wizards wearing bones. Look, I might not think of them as racist in the traditional sense, but they are undeniably speciesist, if that’s a word? They think of themselves as superior, and other sentient magical species either work under (goblins) or are enslaved (house-elves) by wizards. We only see Veelas very briefly, but despite them being admired for their beauty, I doubt wizards treat them very well. So- show me blood-purists wearing corsets made of goblin bones and teeth. Show me Veelas being hunted for their blood to stain and dye clothes with. Show me exotic “magical creatures” that are humanoid and capable of reasoning and should have rights, like mermaids and werewolves, being hunted for their scales and pelts while also being ostracised for being ‘non-human’. It’s terrible, but that’s the kind of archaic jewellery and fashion the old families that the fandom likes to fetishise would like to wear.

"Ummm they toned down the abuse from Gabe in Percy Jackson because it's a kids show, stop being mad about it"
Ignoring the fact that it's also a children's book, let's take a look at some children's media in the last couple decades that depict parental abuse towards children that isn't physical, but still makes the abuse feel real:
1. Harry Potter. I'm loathe to even put it on here bc of how much I hate JKR, but HP DOES depict child abuse in probably one of the best ways of any modern media. As far as I can remember (correct me if I'm wrong), the Dursley's never lay a hand on Harry. But it is never even questioned if they're awful people towards Harry - they literally make him sleep in a closet.
2. Matilda. Like do I even need to explain this one? Abuse from not only her whole family (again, NONE of it physical from what I recall), but also from other authority figures. And she's not the only character who deals with parental abuse - Miss Honey is a grown adult shown to be dealing with the negative effects of an abusive parental figure.
3. Phineas and Ferb. Laugh all you want, but Doofenshmirtz's parents were genuinely awful to him. His stories are just tamed down in a way that's palpable to a much younger audience while still also being clear abuse - a young child can chuckle at his stories but STILL understand why maybe some of his stories would turn him evil.
4. Avatar the Last Airbender. Zuko's father physically disables his own son. Not to mention the constant emotional neglect and manipulation on top of it, the writers never held back on how bad his father was. Even if he hadn't scarred Zuko, he would still be a clear depiction of an abusive parent.
5. The Willoughbys. The parents are so awful that the kids literally plot to murder them. The parents abandoned them to freeze to death on top of a mountain. Enough said.
6. Percy fucking Jackson.
Percy Jackson IS a book made for kids that depicts child abuse from a parent - and not only does it depict child abuse, it depicts spousal abuse.
I know Percy doesn't know that Gabe is physically hurting Sally in the beginning of the book. But we as the audience know that Gabe DOES hurt Percy. There is not a single sign in the new show that Percy has anything more than a snarky, annoyed view of Gabe.
Gabe is supposed to be smelly and disgusting, a drunk (which, even if they can't depict that in a Disney show, you can still play around with his grossness), a slob, and a gambler. He's barely even greasy in the show. Literally they could have just had him belch a few times or eat messily and it would have given off a better impression of his character. Instead, he just quips back and forth with Percy and then later is just...whining. He's whiney. He does not ring as a man who abuses his family, emotionally OR physically, he rings as a pathetic step-dad figure who can't support himself (which is ALSO not canon, because in the book he runs an auto store! His abuse towards Sally is not for lack of money, it's just because he's a dick!!!) The fact that I think that Doof's parents in Phineas and Ferb are more overtly abusive than him on screen is actually absurd.
And Sally fell flat. Her character in the book doesn't yell literally ever - not once in the whole series can I recall her legitimately yelling at someone. Her persona is kind and gentle in the books and as for wits, she's clever, and sneaky, and cunning. She fights back with Gabe in ways that we as the audience can see, but Gabe misses because he's so dense.
Take the bean dip scene.
In the show, she basically is like "Yeah yeah I'll make the bean dip, shut up" and Gabe just whines about the sour cream while they yell at each other.
In the book? That's her bargaining chip to take the car for the weekend. That's her ticket out of the house. Bribery. Not just placating a whining husband - she bribes him in the books.
And her yelling back? Just feels so unnatural to Sally Jackson as a whole. I saw someone say she feels like Disney girl-bossed her, and they're right. She doesn't feel like Sally Jackson. She feels like just another cut and paste Disney woman who's snappy and doesn't take shit.
And to be clear - the OG Sally Jackson also didn't take shit. She was just so much more clever about it, in a way that made sure Percy never saw her actively yell. She doesn't have to be snarky and rude to get her way. Percy knows she's fighting back without physically fighting, and that's what makes her so strong. Sometimes you have to fight more with your wits and cleverness than you do with screaming and fists
(Gee...wonder what other character Percy ends up really admiring that also holds that philosophy in life?)
Anyway...all that said, stop blaming the fact that it's a children's show on Gabe's watered down personality. Children's shows/movies and family shows/movies have been depicting serious parental abuse and neglect for decades, in both realistic and more humorous ways that don't take away from the neglect. Kids can handle it, because there are kids going through it.
To say that "It's a kids show, kids shouldn't have to see that," is a disservice to the kids who need to see that, so they know that they can get away too, and they don't have to get physical to do it.
Also, this version of Gabe? Doesn't deserve to die. He's just annoying, not an asshole that scares Percy more than literal monsters do.

i think my key issue with the sanitization of death eater characters is that it feels like people do not see their stories as tragic or empathize with the characters until we have a hc that's like "actually they were morally good the whole time!"
regulus black and severus snape are tragic characters and child soldiers no matter what side they were "really" on. even barty crouch jr, who may not have been groomed into being a death eater, is tragic when you spend a second to consider his relationship with his father. there are plenty of death eaters who we know are taking after their fathers in joining the cult. lucius malfoy, who was a prefect when the marauders enter hogwarts, most likely spread the death eater ideology, since the ideology is just a more extreme version/logical endpoint of what already existed in the wizarding world.
to me, these ideas are not headcanons, because they are heavily implied by the text. when jkr mentions malfoy in the deathly hallows that is not for no reason.
Tumblr media
mallfoy's acceptance of snape and position of power are both highlighted in this sentence. we can infer that snape felt a sense of community for the first time in Slytherin. with malfoy as a prefect we can infer that the culture of Slytherin house lifted up bigots and those with an important family name.
this is a culture that breeds more bigotry. we know that Dumbledore did not step in to stop this cultural development in the 90s, after already seeing what it could do!!! so we can infer that he did not in the 70s. so a bunch of children were left alone in an echo chamber of hate. of course some of them became fanatics!!!
this doesn't mean they shouldn't be held accountable. but we cannot expect children to overcome cultural and political hegemony all alone. like.... that's just not how the world works. and it's tragic that children are fodder for fascist's wars, especially when the fact that the children were abused or neglected makes them more vulnerable to be fodder.
regulus and severus weren't treated as people, their humanity was denied by the fascist they served, bc that's how fascism works. exploring their characters as they are in canon, with full humanity, without needing to change their stories to see that humanity, is much more interesting to me. it is much more in the spirit of redemption and restoration.

This doesn't apply to the blood libel genocide simulator and you can have it back when you've learned to engage with media critically despite childhood nostalgia.

Children's media can absolutely and does radicalize kids when written correctly,it's just that shitty bigoted adults in fandoms deliberately misenterpret their messages and trick them into believing they're canon and that's how we got here.Bleach had Ichigo be a goth punk dude who's a fantastic older brother and choose his female love interest because she's his best friend and he finds her weirdgirlness to be enchanting which is good rep for us because being punk is about nonconformity and so is the fact that he never joined the military system his species was largely a part of because he didn't give two shits about them but over half the fandom is convinced the mangaka is a 'sellout' and 'pandering' for not making him essentially a paranormal cop for the sake of pairing him up with the fem mc that he has a familial and queerplatonic relathionship with as confirmed by the aformentioned mangaka
Pjo had Percy hate the gods as much as Luke does and act on it too but directly TO them instead of grooming younger halfbloods to work for him as soldiers and in fact he basically adopted every one of them he came across as his siblings and pseudo-kids and this is explicitly framed as why he's a hero and Luke's evil but you see nonstop erasure of his anti-corruption and anti-authority mentality and direct action despite being his core character traits to make him more palpable as an 'average fantasy protagonist' when the point of him is that he's not normal in any way
The Owl House had 3/5 of it's mcs be poc with the two white ones being an autistic and ocd lesbian and the other a disabled boy with zero conventionally physical traits that're never made out to be ugly and the protag is an inmigrant afrolatina girl while the big villain is a puritan colonizer and every single ship on the show is queer including the m/f one and the token white boy has almost all the important characters to his arc being black and the only one who isn't is a fat asian girl who's also disabled but the HUGE amount of positive rep in the show is deliberately taken out of context for bad faith critisism by a bunch of 20/30/even 40 year olds who've never written actual good stories themselves and this includes them adoring and gushing over the colonizer guy while dismissing the poc and women in the cast as irrelevant
Across the Spiderverse had an EXTREMELY black in every way character literally named SpiderPUNK who makes his beliefs clear in every single one of his lines and isn't all talk for a single second but he's reduced down to 'annoying edgy older brother figure' and made to listen to Taylor Swift and go to Hot Topic and called 'obviously a skater boy' and every other poser punk trope in the books
Atla had Aang and Katara be a gnc boy of a lesser known type of asian race and Katara a brownskin native girl that reclaims femininity for herself with their character drives being to save the world with Zuko's arc hammering it in again and again that while he always had good in him,he WAS evil,he DOES have a lot of bad traits and that made him do a lot of bad things and THAT'S why he needed a redemption arc to be a hero but Aang gets called racist for following the buddhist belief that in-universe he was sole remaining follower of that killing humans is bad,Katara gets adultified and stripped of her actual personality to make her just 'hashtag relatable teen gurl' and Zuko gets infantalized and upholded as the least problematic character in the whole show
And my last and not quite like the rest example is Harry Potter, including the spinoffs and fanon.Everything in it is neoliberal bs and the fandom just made it worse-Oh,the house that's a metaphor for fascism and white supremacy legacies? They're just misunderstood little babies and every minority-coded🥺The lower class family who canonically were Jkr's best attempt at good people that still flopped?Awful homophobic bastards😡All the female characters?Perfect slay 'You can't sit with us' girlboss, precious little baby angel who can't tie her shoes without her reverse harem's help or manipulative self-obsessed hyperfemme pick me,those are the only three categories they can ever fall in.Marauder's Era not only existing but being very,VERY popular is nothing but whiteness-What is there for you to be attached to there exactly? With the canon cast i can least see why you'd have nostalgia but M Era is literally nothing. You just CHOOSE to pick a franchise that's violently bigoted towards basically everyone and who's creator actively influences and helps caused that hurt irl oppressed groups instead of making ocs since you're already building them from scratch anyway
It's not the fault of actual good creators and especially not kids in fandom that grown ass bootlickers couldn't accept that their precious 'escapist comfort media' isn't apolitical at all instead of absorving it's messages like they should have since they have no care for other people despite insisting how kind and unproblematic they are
