A sketch I made for @harseik of [bearded] Ridge Segovia, my favorite of the cast of her series Firesiders. This stupid star is so much fun I love him—
I’ve been geeking out over this story for a few days now. I’m obsessed with the artwork and the unique vibe this story has. The characters are so dynamic and fun, I can’t wait till they all unite and cause chaos.
I don’t think I’ve geeked out this hard over anything recently, at least anything new. Sure, I like Star Wars and Indiana Jones and I feel anxious and excited when discussing those. But dangit, I HAVE SO MUCH PENT UP EXCITEMENT FOR THIS UNIVERSE—
Keep up the good work Hark. You keep me up at night now 😭🥲

DnD - Ennoc Courcelles
High Fantasy / Sword & Sorcery / D&D / Pathfinder version of my OC Noah who's been around for a few years. Often goes simply by Noc [pronounced "knock"]. I dust him off when tabletopping beckons and I'm in the mood to play a hooman. Let it be known that not even your non-modern OCs are safe from the grumpy fireman. Huehuehuehueueh.
I've drawn this dude before a while back. That design still pretty much checks out.
I'd love to actually disclose a little bit of background this time, if that's cool. <3
-
Noc began his martial career as part of a soldier company, during a point in his life when he was far more of a people-person, even going so far as earning the trust and favor of the commander. At some point, the company is implored by tribal wood elves to help deal with another clan (gnomes long-corrupted by some evil draconic force) threatening to wipe out their way of life.
Post-ambush, Courcelles was made a P.O.W. along with the rest of his squadron. Forced salamander-ingesting was a signature torture method of the clan. As elementals spawned from sulfur, the likes of dark, humid (big fans of rain), acidic biomes were dream habitats for these creatures, but this nesting behavior only resulted in the body burning from the inside-out, with the victim suffering a slow, searing, boiling, agonizing death.
Although thrown in a pit to die along with the rest of his squad and witnessing many of their traumatizing deaths, Ennoc managed to escape the hollow and stagger all the way back to an ally camp where he was delivered to the field hospice. Alas, with fever and delirium firmly set in, he was unable to relay enough information to rescue the squadron before passing out.
Healers soon understood that they couldn't remove or kill the salamander without causing some kind of deadly ignition, and so, with the combined expertise of both a modern and tribal alchemist, they worked together to transmogrify the material make-up of some of Noc's innards to counteract the intruder.
The first thing Ennoc did upon recovery was do something wildly out-of-character and got into a fight with his commander, who told him he couldn't help his teammates because they were certainly dead at that point. He flew into a rage, managing to injure the commander, but he wound up being disarmed and defeated anyhow. With his superior's trust in him completely shattered, Ennoc was let go for mental unsuitability.
Feels bad man.
Eventually he graduates from sellsword, to SPELLsword sellsword as the salamander's presence starts giving him access to fire spells. Magically allowed some fire-proof hair to grow in too. All done as a thank you for the free lodging, I suppose. It's the least the little beast can do to rectify the chronic pain, the temper problems, setting things on fire unintentionally, the white-blonde makeover, the sulfuric breath (which he goes through a loooooot of parsley and flowers to suppress), killing his career, and a million other things he didn't ask for.
A focus is implanted in his hand to help keep them pyrotechnics under control.
Even more sucky post-salamander side effects: He not only has a severe distrust of small races (gnomes especially - he'll get ridiculously triggered upon hearing their boisterous signature laughs), but the abnormal amounts of heat his body took on gave him brain damage that, in a sense... burned away his social filter. He throws insults, fantasy-race slurs, and meanspirited remarks when he really doesn't mean to, and you can tell it was an accident by the surprise and regret on his face afterward. No I'm not sorry for his inevitable future full of tavern brawls and getting thrown in jail all the time for insulting royals on accident.
Major elemental weakness: ICE.

Thanks for letting me annoy you with some personal RP stuff. C:

Firesiders - An Overwhelming Spirit
I didn't consult a single ribcage reference and it shows. -Finger guns- For some background, Ridge Segovia can shapeshift into an ashy skull beasty thing. Ridge, being the empathetic performer that he is, has the ability to embody and internalize any of his fellow Firesiders, changing the warform's physical attributes. By channeling Noah, his skull changes into that of a javelina/peccary and has a sword arm. He also becomes much more ticked off. Because what else would you expect to happen? Ridge: "Channel Noah they said. It'd be FUN they said." It's law 'round these parts that every screamy drawing needs a theme song: "Fury" by Wage War

I wish I could properly express the sheer joy I experienced drawing this page. Things are getting weird, all of the expressions were outrageously fun to figure out, and it's great seeing Noah respond to circumstances where he is not in control and, like, trying to be some kind of hero. He's a jerk, but a protective jerk. And maybe, just maybe, Lupe is correct and everything really is his fault. I've NEVER liked baby-shaped antagonists. They have always wigged me out. As a kid, any baby character bearing a slightly unusual shape never failed to give me nightmares (Baby Sinclair, Dawn of the Dead zombie baby, Dead Space Lurkers, Eraserhead, Silent Hill 4's Twins, Tiny Toons, lol). I've never liked the look of chibis for that very reason and rarely drew them unless begged by friends. They are worse than creepy Japanese girls, creepy olds, and any other age group <i>combined</i>, so although the visuals may not do it for some and might even find cherub enemies downright funny, the concept of monstrous infants come from a sickening, freaky, unexplainable place for me. I'll do my best to clue everyone in on one of my darkest fears through this little story beat. Enjoy. :) In my previous page submission I was endlessly complaining about similar-looking costuming on Marcus and Noah. I addressed it slightly by giving Marcus baggier sleeves, thicker shirt material, and changing Noah's shirt in an extremely nobody-cares kind of way. Itty bitty changes that do nothing except give this neurotic artist some additional confidence in the visuals. (Lupe will suffer some changes too. I really don't like her fake-looking shoes tbh...)

A redo of a promo I drew a year ago (original can be viewed here). I still loved the setup, but character updates were certainly in order. Dolores: Has a form of Tourette's that causes her right eye to blink involuntarily and will seem as if she's "winking" in many future illustrations~ Ridge: Unlike the others, he refuses to look the viewer in the eye. He's hiding something. Noah: Yeah, I essentially used the same sketch from last time, with some edits. If looks could kill, sheesh. JD: "Trust me, Noah. Trust meeeee." *Slides down* Tanner: Perfection. :) Madison: She looks so scary and I don't know why?? May be the lazy eyes. They look as if they know no mercy.

I wanna get some things off my chest. A few regrets so far: Lupe. It became quickly clear once she was extracted from the script and actually placed on a page that she is someone who is decidedly quite grounded and lacking profound levels of imagination (I mean that in a nice way lol). She beats down and blows off everything and everyone that purports to be extraordinary, because she has an earthy, grungy worldview that efficiently edges out fairytales and the paranormal. Which just doesn't coincide with her presentation at all. The cactus tattoo works the best, but the thunderbird, the Scorpio astrology sign, the unconventional dogtag symbol, the quirky hair, the Frankenstein monster stitching on her phone case, various other weird little fashion choices, and the creepy graffiti would indicate that she entertains weird ideas, but she really doesn't! I just wish I was able to shelve my kooky proclivities for once and designed an appearance that the character liked, rather than what I liked. She is for sure a graffiti writer, but distill her a bit and she's more of a "tagger". Putting her insignia down wherever she can find room in a sea of other insignias. Evil clowns? Pfft, get outta here. The psychobilly/juggalo vibes were, in truth, carried over from a 'zanier' version of the character several iterations ago. I did some recycling out of laziness and now a lot of it no longer works. Oh, and I wanted to cover Lupe's backpack in paint (as expressed in her character sheet) and I just forgot to do it. Marcus' appearance (though not as bad as Lupe). He seems off. Like a Y2K version of an urban explorer with a piercing arrangement that I haven't seen on anyone in 10 years. A little sus that both him and Noah have tight-ish sleeves, long shirts, close collars, and are double-layering their clothes. BOTH HAVE VESTS TOO. I didn't realize how limited my mental fashion catalog was until now. Noah's hair is tooooo looooong. It is more reminiscent of how he has it during Arc 1, which was a sucky time when he was semi-homeless. This is during Arc 2 and is decidedly no longer a vagabond and doesn't have to cut his hair with nail clippers anymore. ಠ_ಠ I really missed the opportunity to place graffiti all over the walls. I'm not great at designing graffiti, but I could have used stock photos, of which I have many of. More hospital equipment would've been nice too. I wonder... is it proper to change things twenty pages in and carry on as if nothing happened? Or does that mean I would have to go back and edit earlier pages extensively? I'm already planning of touching up previous pages once I get the first issue done, but the edits I have in mind would be fairly major. But the journey continues! Usually these kinds of missed opportunities would drive a rod into my spokes, but keeping in mind that this comic is entirely non-canon and excitement for the action pieces that are coming up are letting me move forward. Ignoring incorrect lines-of-sight all over the dang place, all in all, I actually really like this page. It make you... question things. And fear for the living. >D

In the midst of the art trading I had going on with BladeGunSniper, she was thoughtful enough to request a piece featuring an original character belonging to @ladypepperofdavenshire (who was cool enough to draw me gift art before, so I was thrilled to take up the offer). Merry Christmas, Pepper! I had a fabulous time tackling your Mandalorian OC, Heln Kadrin. I'm smitten by any >8( face he makes, so I continued the trend. 👌 Tremendous battle damage was on the horizon for Kadrin's armor, but upon vaguely remembering that Mando armor is the Adamantium of the Star Wars universe, I saved it at the last second and restrained the wear and tear to the paint. It's very possible that the beskad sword is made out of the same material, yet I went ahead and chipped it anyway. Might also be too short as well... I invite any and all shaming for my rusty SW knowledge. This is admittedly an experimental piece (hey look - black-spotting). I don't tend to do that for gifts, but I hope it's an interesting outcome.

Firesiders - Six
The Grace Watcher - Dolores de la Cruz, the Watchful Curator
The Right Bearer - Ridge Segovia, the Bombastic Idol
The Spirit Holder - Noah Escálante, the Visceral Athlete The Faith Keeper - JD Wells, the Lionhearted Shepherd The Truth Raiser - Tanner Adrian, the Brotherly Defender The Peace Treader- Madison Romero, the Wayfaring Maverick Link to previous version. I have every right in the world to simply override the original, but it's nice to preserve previous versions any way I can, for sentimental reasons. It's why I still have all of my ancient Firesiders art up that go all the way back to 2010, as horrible and irrelevant as most of it is. Finally decided to update this when I was talking to a family member about this project (ultra rare occasion) and was using the past lineup to explain stuff, but ultimately couldn't because the characters were wrong. Well, no more. HAHA, I didn't notice this until now, but all of the extroverts are smiling and all of the introverts are either sour or looking incredulous. Character notes: Dolores I really feel like the triangle 'shape language' I picked for Dolores (top left) sorta failed and now she looks weird as a result. As for personality changes, she might've lost a marble or two while no one was looking. Past trauma was centered around her head and face which is why she became the Helmet, and so I'm thinking, ya know, brain damage. She'll still be extremely intelligent, but also a little out to lunch. Dolores has always lived with a bunch of birds. By herself. In a giant creaky estate. Why didn't I notice she was kooky before?? Ridge My favorite Ridge drawing from two lineups ago returns, whoohoo! Back to being a frat Hollywood flirt machine with an identity crisis. Noah Just a couple touchups. Still the same knucklehead. JD As mentioned in a previous submission, JD's shape language has been changed to "circle", so her portrait's been redrawn and is looking much more anatomically convincing. Apples was revisited too, dramatically giving away his paper lantern aesthetic! Tanner And like clockwork, the only person that didn't change in the slightest when it came to touchups, was Tanner. He is immutable. Eternal. Constant in his vanilla insipidness. He is best boy. However, his personality, or rather his motivations/fears/desires, have shifted somewhat. It would be "sloth" that more or less characterizes his main flaw now. He has a habit of rendering himself numb to problems, giving into platitudes, and artificially limiting himself to the comfort of supportive roles, rather than do anything that would make him appear unagreeable or separate. He is a masterclass of selling himself short, all done to achieve that peace of mind he craves. Floating with the tide may buy him contentment in the short term, but how long until he realizes that to know real peace, he must first know Truth? Madison The more I stare at the eyes, the weirder she looks. I'm stuck with it for now, I guess. Hopefully I've at least gotten the idea across: devil-may-care biker chick who shoots the world a side-eye when she's up to no good. A globetrotter since birth, she denies having ties to anyplace... or anyone. This is a weird analogy, but uh, I think of her as a Skyrim fox. Sometimes she leads her crew off the beaten path, occasionally coming across treasures, new understanding, and unspeakable dangers, but most importantly of all, no matter how lost the Firesiders get, they can count on Madison to be their unflappable pathfinder. Update complete~

@solidagold <- I’ve been eyeing this girl’s magnificent original character for a WHILE now. Those huge cascading braids and that intuitive way of displaying emotion in them compound eyes - simply brilliant. We don’t know each other and so this is ridiculously random, but while I’m on a bug kick, I found myself wanting to take a shot at Mellifera, the queen honeybee. :)
Edit: The faves and reblogs on this piece are flooring me. Appreciate the interaction, friends!

Firesiders - Circle Face JD
I've just recently gotten around to officially assigning shapes to the faces of each FS cast member. If you're a two-year-old like me and have a thing for shapes and arranging said shapes, this is the funnest thing in the world. JD got stuck with the dreaded circle and honestly: adorable. I might even try to push it even more in the future. Curse her with a face with zero vertical height. A face whose bone structure will keep it completely round no matter what weight she's at. Hats and glasses are gonna be a chore to pick out. How did this national treasure rope Noah, a confrontational dipstick, into being her best friend? The world may never know.

Took a long, long time just drawing that flamin' cherub (soooo many references - do I LOOK like I can draw chibi/chubby kids naturally?) that I'm not even sure what to say for this page, but I'll try. Not the happiest with the 1-3 panel speech bubbles, both regarding the placement and the dialogue itself. I was fading, man. I am excited for this page for ANOTHER reason: this entire practice comic stint literally started with a single thought, and that was, "putti/cherubs would make for a spoopy enemy". I am so happy that I finally got here. It's been years. xD

It's been epic not being required to draw any backgrounds for the past couple pages. The characters are the stars of the show, baby. (Please don't look at my backgrounds from now on, they're terrible.) The kids are fighting again. Can't we all just get along?? Panel 4: Tumblr be like: "Now kith." Marcus' off-panel dialogue I felt was not placed very optimally, but having his speech bubble point into the sky was all I could think to do. *BAP*

There. Exposition. That's all we're are gonna get for a while, hate to say. Still confused? I put the blame at the feet of Mr. Varsity Vest, who usually lets his fellow Firesiders talk for him. All the sweating messed up his hair, waah! Definitely need to redraw his ref at this point. Panel 1/2/3: I feel like I'm killing it with drawing hands these days, but I worry if they sometimes look too stumpy/girly, seeing as I use my own hands as reference for every character... Panel 4: OK, I redrew that profile from scratch like 7 times and I am just not a fan. It didn't matter how many refs I used... it still looks off-model. Even though I had permission to simply draw Noah at another angle or whatever, I convinced myself if I didn't make that angle work then I am an artistic failure, and so here we are. Good looking jaw shadow though. I'll try to keep that up. Panel 5: Lupe makes up for everything. She's probably turned into my favorite character to draw. Basically what I did was imagine the face a normal person would make if I were to explain the entire plot of Firesiders to them, and it turned out so on-point. Does the speech bubble placement help to guide your eye around the page? Is the dialogue okay/sensible? Lend me your thoughts if you see issues of any kind!

EDIT (11/1/2021): Wooooow, forgot Lupe's glove and the fact that she has a BONE MALLET in her hand. Fixed! This is not the first time I've left out these specific details. I forget she's wearing a backpack all the time too. Her outdated character sheet is always confuzzling me.
This was proving impossible to complete a month ago, but hiding in a metaphorical cave for a few days worked! STILL isn't talking, but next page will actually have info~ I'm starting to think Marcus looks like the color of chalk under these light conditions, so I'll probably change him a bit on the next page. Speaking of, I better start turning down the lights, as evening is slowly getting chased away by the night at this point. Panel 5: "The snap right after Lupe's grilling is perfect in part ending his silence and also a little attitude via sorta last nerve snap while still acting mr cool but crazy cucumber" ~ ElyseeBee And that's a great observance. When you're staring at the same page for days, any stand-out rhythms of dialogue and sound affects I don't really register until a day later. The salve container emulating his last nerve - happy accident!! I agree with that assessment.
