"You loved me then what right had you to leave me?" - the parallels between Jaime/Cersei and Wuthering Heights
"There's a dialogue that goes on through the years and over the centuries where you read someone else's work and you're inspired by it, sometimes infuriated by it, and you say 'No, that's not quite right, here's the way it would be' and then you write your own twist on it, your own answer to it! There is this conscious playing with tropes, replying to other authors and making a reference or an homage in some cases… but there's also unconsciousness. Those are are rife, sometimes you read a book and you haven't looked at it for twenty years, but it's still there buried inside and suddenly someone points out 'this seems just like this' and you go 'Oh my god! It's right, I forgot about that!'. So it works both ways." - George R.R. Martin, Trinity College Dublin
“The first books I read besides comic books were cheap paperbacks which cost 35 cents back then. There were no bookstores in Bayonne so I got my paperbacks from a spinner rack and all the books in that were mixed up. There were science fiction books and fantasy books, which I liked, but there were also mystery novels, romance novels, nurse novels, gothics, spy novels and, of course, there were classics of literature mixed in with that: Shakespeare, Dostoiévski, the Brontë sisters, Jane Austen, etc.” – George R.R. As pointed out above, George has (whether conscious or unconsciously) taken inspiration from other works to create his own characters, and with this post I’d like to explain as to why I believe A Song Of Ice And Fire specifically plays with Heathcliff and Catherine’s relationship from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights through Jaime and Cersei’s dynamic.
To briefly explain it to those who have not read it, Wuthering Heights is essentially the story of Heathcliff’s revenge on the Earnshaws and the Lintons for the discrimination suffered at their hands and their involvement in his estrangement from his friend and lover Catherine Earnshaw (aka Cathy) and, at it’s core, it is a novel about intergenerational abuse and family dysfunction.
Shaped by these circumstances, we have at the forefront of the book the toxic romance between the foster siblings Heathcliff and Catherine who, like Jaime and Cersei, develop a very intimate bond early on in their childhood:
She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep her separate from him. – Nelly, Chapter V He could never bear to be long apart from his twin. – Jaime, ASOS
‘I was a child; my father was just buried, and my misery arose from the separation that Hindley had ordered between me and Heathcliff. I was laid alone, for the first time; and, rousing from a dismal doze after a night of weeping, I lifted my hand to push the panels aside: it struck the tabletop!’ – Catherine, Chapter XII Though Cersei often slept alone, she had never liked it. Her oldest memories were of sharing a bed with Jaime, when they had still been so young that no one could tell the two of them apart. Later, after they were separated, she'd had a string of bedmaids and companions, most of them girls of an age with her, the daughters of her father's household knights and bannermen. – Cersei, AFFC
We made ourselves as snug as our means allowed in the arch of the dresser. I had just fastened our pinafores together, and hung them up for a curtain, when in comes Joseph, on an errand from the stables. He tears down my handiwork, boxes my ears, and croaks. – Catherine, Chapter III "Sometimes as a lark we would dress in each other's clothes and spend a whole day each as the other." – Cersei, ACOK
I took my dingy volume by the scroop, and hurled it into the dogkennel, vowing I hated a good book. Heathcliff kicked his to the same place. – Catherine, Chapter III The dank and dismal fortnight Cersei spent at Greenstone, the seat of House Estermont, was the longest of her young life. Jaime dubbed the castle "Greenshit" at first sight, and soon had Cersei doing it too. – Cersei, AFFC
Miss Cathy had been sick, and that made her still; she leant against her father’s knee, and Heathcliff was lying on the floor with his head in her lap. – Nelly, Chapter V "Care for a bath, Brienne?" He laughed. "You're a maiden and there's the pool. I'll wash your back." He used to scrub Cersei's back, when they were children together at Casterly Rock. – Jaime, ASOS
Additionally, in both cases, the female characters have, from early on, a clear influence over their male counterparts:
His peevish reproofs wakened in her a naughty delight to provoke him: she was never so happy as when we were all scolding her at once, and she defying us with her bold, saucy look, and her ready words; turning Joseph’s religious curses into ridicule, baiting me, and doing just what her father hated most showing how her pretended insolence, which he thought real, had more power over Heathcliff than his kindness: how the boy would do her bidding in anything, and his only when it suited his own inclination. – Nelly, Chapter V “Father will never consent,” Jaime objected. […] “Is it a rock you want? Or me?” He remembered that night as if it were yesterday. […] By morning Casterly Rock seemed a small price to pay to be near her always. He gave his consent, and Cersei promised to do the rest. – Jaime, ASOS
‘He’s considering he’d rather I’d come to him! Find a way, then! not through that kirkyard. You are slow! Be content, you always followed me!’ – Catherine, Chapter XII She rose, her eyes brimming with tears. “Is it truly you?” She did not come to him, however. She has never come to me, he thought. She has always waited, letting me come to her. – Jaime, ASOS
And there’s an element of adoration as well. In Wuthering Heights, at the end of Heathcliff’s life, Nelly refers to Catherine as his “departed idol” and Heathcliff describes Cathy as “so immeasurably superior to everybody on earth”. On the other hand, in A Song Of Ice And Fire, Jaime puts Cersei on a pedestal as the figure of “The Maiden” and describes Cersei’s flame in his weirwood dream as “the only light in the world”. Furthermore, the two claim to have suffered through hardships solely for the sake of these women and that their love is the ultimate factor that drives them:
‘I’ve fought through a bitter life since I last heard your voice; and you must forgive me, for I struggled only for you!’ – Heathcliff, Chapter X When morning came, he made himself eat. They fed him a mush of oats, horse food, but he forced down every spoon. He ate again at evenfall, and the next day. Live, he told himself harshly, live for Cersei. – Jaime, ASOS
‘Be with me always - take any form - drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!’ – Heathcliff, Chapter XVI Beside Lord Tywin stood his sister, pale and beautiful, a torch burning in her hand. Her torch was the only light in the cavern. She turned to go. “Stay with me,” Jaime pleaded. “Don't leave me here alone. Don't leave me in the dark!” – Jaime, ASOS
However, the most striking similarities arise from the way that Catherine and Cersei perceive their relationships with Heathcliff and Jaime respectively. Catherine, though far from being the worst person out of the cast of characters present in the novel (certainly Hindley and Joseph and even Heathcliff himself are more morally reprehensible), is the one that possesses the most traits stereotypically ascribed to narcissism: she’s very duplicitous and self-absorbed, she has a completely delusional opinion of herself and consistently projects her own flaws onto others, she’s often contemptuous of the weaknesses of those around her, she has a very explosive temper and reacts with aggression when crossed, she flips situations on their head to make herself look like the victim and she certainly sees her relationships as transactional, including her relationship with Heathcliff:
‘And should I always be sitting with you? What good do I get? What do you talk about? You might be dumb, or a baby, for anything you say to amuse me, or for anything you do, either!’ – Catherine, Chapter VIII
It is also frequently mentioned that Catherine enjoys being in control and does not take well to being contradicted:
It was nothing less than murder in her eyes for anyone to presume to stand up and contradict her. – Nelly, Chapter IX Cersei is as gentle as King Maegor, as selfless as Aegon the Unworthy, as wise as Mad Aerys. She never forgets a slight, real or imagined. She takes caution for cowardice and dissent for defiance. – Tyrion, ADWD
I observed that Mr. Edgar had a deep-rooted fear of ruffling her humour. He concealed it from her; but if ever he heard me answer sharply, or saw any other servant grow cloudy at some imperious order of hers, he would show his trouble by a frown of displeasure that never darkened on his own account. He many a time spoke sternly to me about my pertness; and averred that the stab of a knife could not inflict a worse pang than he suffered at seeing his lady vexed. Not to grieve a kind master, I learned to be less touchy; and, for the space of half a year, the gunpowder lay as harmless as sand, because no fire came near to explode it. – Nelly, Chapter X His sister liked to think of herself as Lord Tywin with teats, but she was wrong. Their father had been as relentless and implacable as a glacier, where Cersei was all wildfire, especially when thwarted. – Jaime, AFFC
And this leads to a point of contention when Heathcliff returns a changed man from his time away:
‘Don’t vex me. Why have you disregarded my request?’ – Catherine, Chapter XI Why does he insist on vexing me? – Cersei, AFFC
‘Oh, you see, Nelly, he would not relent a moment to keep me out of the grave. That is how I’m loved!’ – Catherine, Chapter XV “You swore that you would always love me. It is not loving to make me beg.” – Cersei, AFFC
All of this, combined with the particular way in which Catherine describes her feelings for Heathcliff, led critics of the book to accuse Catherine of perceiving and thus loving Heathcliff as an extension of herself. And, surely, most of these things she privately confesses to Nelly could have easily come out of Cersei’s mouth, who has been confirmed by the author to being written as highly narcissistic.
In chapter IX, Catherine says that her love for Heathcliff is a necessity and throughout the series Cersei’s sentiments for Jaime are frequently displayed through that same lens:
The wench had the right of it. He could not die. Cersei was waiting for him. She would have need of him. – Jaime, ASOS They rode hard the next day, at Jaime's insistence. His son was dead, and his sister needed him. – Jaime, ASOS “Jaime, you're my shining knight. You cannot abandon me when I need you most!” – Cersei, ASOS “I need you with me. In me. Please, Jaime. Please.” – Cersei, AFFC “Why would Cersei need the Warrior? She has me.” – Jaime, AFFC She licked her lips, shivering. “Come at once. Help me. Save me. I need you now as I have never needed you before. I love you. I love you. I love you. Come at once.” – Cersei, AFFC Jaime, I need Jaime. – Cersei, ADWD
Of course, in Cersei’s case, she “needs” Jaime because he is, in her mind, the brawn to her brain (“He was meant to be my sword and shield, my strong right arm.”), her protector, her agency in a patriarchal society… but she also needs him because she does not feel like a self-realized autonomous human being without him as she believes her own personhood has been split into two entities. And the same goes for Catherine:
‘I cannot express it; but surely you and everybody have a notion that there is or should be an existence of yours beyond you. What were the use of my creation, if I were entirely contained here?’ – Catherine, Chapter IX “Jaime and I are more than brother and sister. We are one person in two bodies.” – Cersei, AGOT
‘Supposing at twelve years old I had been wrenched from the Heights, and every early association, and my all in all, as Heathcliff was at that time, and been converted at a stroke into Mrs. Linton, the lady of Thrushcross Grange, and the wife of a stranger: an exile, and outcast, thenceforth, from what had been my world. You may fancy a glimpse of the abyss where I grovelled!’ – Catherine, Chapter XII “I was lost without you, Jaime. I was afraid the Starks would send me your head. I could not have borne that. I am not whole without you.” – Cersei, ASOS
In fact, both women go as far as claiming their partners’ identities as their own:
‘Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.’ – Catherine, Chapter IX “You are me, I am you.” – Cersei, AFFC ‘It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know how I love him: and that, not because he’s handsome, Nelly, but because he’s more myself than I am.’ – Catherine, Chapter IX
And from this idea of a shared existence and a lack of purpose when apart comes the desire for union in death and the mythologizing of these relationships:
‘If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.’ – Catherine, Chapter IX “If he were dead, I would know it. We came into this world together, Uncle. He would not go without me.” – Cersei, ADWD ‘She’s dead! I’ve not waited for you to learn that’. – Heathcliff, Chapter XVI
‘We’ve braved its ghosts often together, and dared each other to stand among the graves and ask them to come. But, Heathcliff, if I dare you now, will you venture? If you do, I’ll keep you. I’ll not lie there by myself: they may bury me twelve feet deep, and throw the church down over me, but I won’t rest till you are with me. I never will!’ – Catherine, Chapter XII I cannot die while Cersei lives, he told himself. We will die together as we were born together. – Jaime, ASOS ‘I wish they may shovel in the earth over us both!’ – Heathcliff, Chapter XXIX
What’s interesting about Wuthering Heights, though, is that, other than codependency, there is an inherent selfishness and possessiveness to this. In chapter XV, when Catherine is effectively dying, it is clear that she does not want Heathcliff to outlive her and she’s terrified by the idea of him moving on and finding happiness elsewhere:
‘How strong you are! How many years do you mean to live after I am gone?’ – Catherine, Chapter XV “Will you forget me? Will you be happy when I am in the earth? Will you say twenty years hence, ‘That’s the grave of Catherine Earnshaw? I loved her long ago, and was wretched to lose her; but it is past. I’ve loved many others since: my children are dearer to me than she was; and, at death, I shall not rejoice that I are going to her: I shall be sorry that I must leave them!’ Will you say so, Heathcliff?” – Catherine, Chapter XV
Indeed, Catherine goes as far as telling Heathcliff that she wishes he would just die (and suffer) alongside her:
‘I wish I could hold you till we were both dead! I shouldn’t care what you suffered. I care nothing for your sufferings. Why shouldn’t you suffer? I do!’ – Catherine, Chapter XV ‘I’m not wishing you greater torment than I have, Heathcliff. I only wish us never to be parted.’ – Catherine, Chapter XV
And Cersei does something comparable when she (in her delusion) asks Jaime to be her champion in a mortal combat knowing he is likely to lose for his handicap:
“My queen,” said Qyburn, “have you . . . forgotten? Ser Jaime has no sword hand. If he should champion you and lose . . .” We will leave this world together, as we once came into it. “He will not lose. Not Jaime. Not with my life at stake.” – Cersei, AFFC
Heathcliff and Catherine don’t die together, however, and, despite what happened in Game Of Thrones, I’m still highly sceptical that Jaime and Cersei will die together in the books either. Yet the impression that Wuthering Heights leaves is that the unhealthy nature of Heathcliff and Catherine’s bond is at the root of their own self-destruction and tragic end:
Ere long, I heard the click of the latch, and Catherine flew up-stairs, breathless and wild; too excited to show gladness: indeed, by her face, you would rather have surmised an awful calamity. – Nelly, Chapter X ‘Mrs. Linton is now just recovering,’ I said; ‘she’ll never be like she was, but her life is spared; and if you really have a regard for her, you’ll shun crossing her way again. […] Another encounter between you and the master would kill her altogether.’ – Nelly, Chapter XIV ‘You have killed me and thriven on it, I think.’ -  Catherine, Chapter XV “’Nay, it’s enough that he has murdered one of you,’ I observed aloud. ‘At the Grange, everyone knows your sister would have been living now had it not been for Mr. Heathcliff. After all, it is preferable to be hated than loved by him. When I recollect how happy we were, how happy Catherine was before he came, I’m fit to curse the day.’ Most likely, Heathcliff noticed more the truth of what was said, than the spirit of the person who said it. His attention was roused, I saw, for his eyes rained down tears among the ashes, and he drew his breath in suffocating sighs.” – Isabella, Chapter XVII ‘She might have been living yet, if it had not been for him!’ was his constant bitter reflection; and, in his eyes, Heathcliff seemed a murderer. – Nelly, Chapter XXI
‘I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer but yours! How can I?’ – Heathcliff, Chapter XV ‘It was a strange way of killing: not by inches, but by fractions of hairbreadths, to beguile me with the spectre of a hope through eighteen years!’ – Heathcliff, Chapter XXIX
The intense horror of nightmare came over me: I tried to draw back my arm, but the hand clung to it, and a most melancholy voice sobbed, ‘Let me in let me in!’ ‘Who are you?’ I asked, struggling, meanwhile, to disengage myself. ‘Catherine Linton,’ it replied, shiveringly (why did I think of Linton? I had read Earnshaw twenty times for Linton) ‘I’m come home: I’d lost my way on the moor!’ As it spoke, I discerned, obscurely, a child’s face looking through the window. - Mr. Lockwood, Chapter III The following evening was very wet: indeed, it poured down till day-dawn; and, as I took my morning walk round the house, I observed the master’s window swinging open, and the rain driving straight in. […] I peeped in. Mr. Heathcliff was there laid on his back. His eyes met mine so keen and fierce, I started; and then he seemed to smile. I could not think him dead: but his face and throat were washed with rain; the bed-clothes dripped, and he was perfectly still. The lattice, flapping to and fro, had grazed one hand that rested on the sill; no blood trickled from the broken skin, and when I put my fingers to it, I could doubt no more: he was dead and stark! – Nelly, Chapter XXXVI
And I wouldn’t be surprised if A Song Of Ice And Fire were to go in the same direction:
It is raining again, he thought when he saw how wet she was. The water was trickling down her cloak to puddle round her feet. How did she get here? I never heard her enter. She was dressed like a tavern wench in a heavy roughspun cloak, badly dyed in mottled browns and fraying at the hem. A hood concealed her face, but he could see the candles dancing in the green pools of her eyes, and when she moved he knew her. – Jaime, AFFC I thought that I was the Warrior and Cersei was the Maid, but all the time she was the Stranger, hiding her true face from my gaze. – Jaime, AFFC The Stranger represents death and the unknown, and leads the dead to the other world. Whilst referred to as male, he is neither male nor female. The Stranger's face has been described as half-human, concealed beneath a hooded mantle. – A Wiki Of Ice And Fire

So, in conclusion, I find it plausible that George might have simply taken the narcissism, the violence and the “twin soul”/“other half” connection present in Wuthering Heights to it’s even more extreme by creating the chaotic mess that is the incestuous relationship between twins who are mirror images of each other... And there's a decent number of parallels to at least make a case for it!

I present to you, Dammor, a half-incubus Tiefling himbo with a tragic background but a sweet personality (most of the time).
Personality
Despite his past Dammor is very kind to those who are kind, but can be even more unemotional and cruel to those who display cruel behavior. He is very attentive and helpful. He also is extremely insightful, making him almost impossible to deceive. He will use this insight to help a friend, motivate others, or to intimidate anyone who stands against him or his friends with cruel but calm observations of their most delicate and personal matters only to inflict emotional disadvantage.
Despite everything, he considers himself a person with much love to share.
Recruitment
Dammor can be found in act 1 inside the Shattered Sanctum being whipped by Abdirak. You can recruit this companion by rolling a deception dice and convincing Abdirak that his punishment technique is insufficient. Dammor's and player's tadpoles connect, revealing an inner muttering about an undescribable pain, something that makes both of you feel a stab of immense guilt and that only more pain will ease this sorrow. To recruit this companion you will have to roll a persuasion check and pick the option 'Use the tadpole to show him your sympathy.', if succeeded, this will automatically make Dammor collapse on his knees and make him start crying his soul out as he releases some of his pain out. Abdirak will admire this display with delight as he thinks you're using your 'true soul' influence to inflict psychological pain on Dammor, leaving him satisfied and ready to let you take Dammor with you as your personal pet now that you've 'earned him'.
Trivia: - When inspecting Dammor before this cutscene, you can see his class is Barbarian. But when inspecting him after the scene his class changes to Paladin.
-When inspecting Dammor after this cutscene he doesn't have the Loviatar's blessing, meaning that he truly always accepted his brutal penance, and is so used to pain from his own self flagellation punishments that Abdirak wasn't satisfied with Dammor's silent bearing.
Approval
Dammor's approval rate is based on acts of selflessness, even if the cost is self-sacrifice or well being. Displaying the acceptance of one's pain and suffering as a conduit for other's happiness and well being will get Dammor to like you more, as he will see in you someone who understands him.
Romance
Despite being able to recruit Dammor in the early game, this companion will only open up for romance in act 3 after finding his childhood foster home and killing the mysterious old lady inside.
Dammor's romance will change his behavior towards the player and their other love interest, he will become more protective and more ruthless in the pursuit of the safety of his loved ones.
Dammor is ployamorous; "I cannot deprive others from my love as I love everyone equally."
Personal quest
Dammor's personal quest is located in Avernus.
In order to complete his personal quest the player must find the remains of Dammor's family, which consist in; a single adult Tiefling horn carved with infernal writing that reads "Lapis Sanguinis", a necklace and a music box.
Background
Dammor is an orphan, his 3 father's and 2 mothers died protecting him and siblings from the dangers of Avernus.
He caughts the attention of an elite leader and gets adopted by him.
Adoptive father sends him to a prestigious academy that trains both soldiers and scholars within Avernus.
He doesn't feel sure about his new life while others are constantly in danger, and always thinks about his siblings.
Gets picked on a lot, bullied a lot for being quiet, non confrontational. Eventually gets abused by both classmates and adoptive father.
He first kills his adoptive father not being able to take more abuse. Then kills one of his bullies.
Bhaal as entity manifests to him, promising safety in murder.
Gets expelled but he steals what he can so he can locate his siblings and take them with him to leave Avernus. Only one is alive and they escape the hells.
Ends up in Baldur's gate, a mysterious woman offers shelter days after he arrives.
Woman is a Bhaal cultist sent to retrieve him and teach him the murder ways, he eventually gets manipulated and forced to kill his sibling to prove himself to Bhaal.
He still can't quite convert fully, there is still light in his heart, but mostly guilt.
Manages to be raised by Bhaal cultists but normalizes murder for safety, his demeanor and presence change drastically under the Bhaalist nurturing, making him seem incredibly unforgiving, intimidating and ruthless but deep down he is still the insecure and quiet little kid he always was.
Not being able to find sense in his life, he wants to end it but nautiloid abduction event happens.
The effects of the symbiotic relationship with the tadpole makes his brain bring childhood memories he didn't even know he had, making him lose interest in ending his life as long as he can have new memories, even if it's little by little, but each memory reinforces the idea that only his pain and suffering will serve as penance for his deep guilt, forging him into constantly seeking self flagellation to feel at ease.

Hear me out. You didn't particularly like to have a ten-looking-year-old two year old talking your ears off every single moment when she was awake. And you didn't particularly liked her mother, nor her father either. They're relationship was hella toxic, how can they not leave each other that much ? But anyways, you may didn't like her family or her in general but she was a child. And trust me when I say you had a soft spot for children.
See growing up you didn't have the best childhood ever. Foster care, unloving parents, fake ass older sister that you're about to kill. Anyways overall, your childhood was shit. And you may be a very bitter and revengeful immortal child, but you could never stay mad at some children. You just couldn't.
Which was exactly why you found yourself laying on your couch with Ratatata Resnesmee, letting her tell you about her two first years of living while eating a peanut butter sandwich. Well she was eating, you were trying your best not to be disgusted by the smell of peanut butter.
"...And you know what ?" Renesmee exclaimed all excited and you gave her your best fake smile.
"No, tell me." You were trying to sound as excited as her. Key word trying.
"Uncle Jasper throwed Uncle Emmett in forest and he took down five trees due to how much force Uncle Jasper throwed him !" The young hybrid told you with a laugh and you tried to give her your best smile.
You loved children okay ? But you two have been talking for five hours straight and all you wanted to do was to go back to your stereotypical villain's plan wall and try to make your plan as flawless as possible. Obviously your plan was already flawless, but we all know that the hero somehow always succeeds in finding a tiny mistake and taking down the evil in five minutes. But that wasn't the only reason you wanted to go back to your super villain's plan wall.
The other reason was that you wanted to let out your super villain's evil laugh that only you can have and that echoed throught your lair while your shadow rose up and your figure slowly disappeared from the view. You know the moment a dramatic music plays in the background while the villain take a final look at their plan's and laugh super loudly for no reason ? Well you wanted that.
That was one of the perk of being the villain, you could do all the badass stuff and it was totally in character.
"You're thinking about your super villain's wall aren't you ?" The young weird hybrid child asked, catching your glance to the other room.
"Honestly ? Yes. Your talk is boring me like crazy." You replied and she shrugged.
"Can't blame you, your wall is cool." Renesmee acknowledged.
She wasn't very offended. At least not anymore. She's been living with your for the past eight days and except your bad temper, mood swings and constant annoyed face, your company was enjoyable. She even found you cool from time to time.
Like the time you showed her your super villain wall for the first time. She was totally amazed by it. The red string linking every single part of your plan, the whole organization of the pictures, the entire process of being a villain that you explained to her proudly by pointing at each part of your plan. She was astonished by your intelligence and it honestly almost made her want to be a villain.
You also explained to her that her villain backstory could start with her existance. She would be the villain of the entire vampire empire, taking over the Volturi who tried to kill her when she was only one and take her revenge on all those who wanted to kill her. Starting with her family who didn't want Isabella to give birth in the first place. And damn Redivide could see herself at the top of the vampire empire with you by her side as a thanks for making her the villain she was destined to be.
But that was a story for another time, in another universe, in another fanfiction.
"Honestly maybe we could add some more glitters―"
"No please no more glitters ! You already filled my villain pictures holder with glitter all over your favorite family members and I let you do it but please no more glitters, my poor immortal eyes can't take some much light. I'm a villain ! I live in the dark !" You complained and she grinned.
"Well maybe that's why your pale as fuck, you have no light in there." Renesmee replied and you gasped.
"Who taught you to swear ?!" You asked.
"Uncle Emmett." She said proudly and you took a sip of your vine glass filled with blood.
"Dang… he's the cool uncle isn't he ?" You questioned and she nodded, causing you to do the same.
"I can be your cool aunt. You know, showing you all the bad stuff and all." You trailed off and Renesmee widened her eyes.
"You could teach me how to hold a knife !"
"And how to use a sword !"
"And how to be all sassy and stuff like you do !"
"I could teach you how to find your super villain signature pose !"
"Oh yeah, we could be such posers together." Renesmee nodded at the thought and you agreed laying back on your with her and putting your feet on the table.
"You know what ? You're my favorite niece." You acknowledged and she rolled her eyes.
"I'm your only niece ?" Renesmee pointed out and you shrugged taking another sip of your drink.
"Still my favorite." You replied and she shrugged at your words.
There was a silence between you two and you could feel that Renesmee had a question but didn't ask, causing you to glare at her a little.
"What ?" You asked half annoyed, half curious.
"You still didn't tell me why you wanted to kill my mother and why you took me here." The hybrid child told and you rolled your eyes.
"You rode my evil speech, you already know why I want your mother to suffer." You replied and she frowned.
"Yeah, but you're not dead, so why want her dead ?" She asked you and you stared at her with an 'are-you-serious?' look.
"Not dead ? Kid, youre talking to a vampire who can manipulate fire. I'm doomed to be a sinner, a danger, a monster because your mother was too selfish to let me have a life. This is my after life, I was mean to be the evil of her story from the beginning now go back in your cage kid." You looked away and Renesmee frowned.
"But your after life could be your second chance to be better !" She protested and you glared.
"I was better before. But I was weaker, now look where it got me. Exactly, now go back to your cell kid. Your time out is over." You pushed her off the couch and Renesmee silently walked toward her cage with a sigh.
You may wonder why she just obeyed your order to literally go back to be a prisoner right ? Well first, you could kill her with a single snap of fingers and also because you were kind enough to give her three hours out of her cage everyday so yeah.
When she was about to close her door, Reconnaissance looked back at you and you tried to ignore the look of pity she was sending you. It wasn't until you locked the door that you finally heard the unfamiliar breathing around the forest. This was also the moment you smelled the eleven unfamiliar scent running around the wood and you clenched your jaw before putting on your coat quickly and Renesmee looked at you confused, her senses being less strong than yours.
"What ? What is it ?" She questioned and you glared at her before closing the door behind her.
"Hey !" Her voice echoed from inside of the lair while you groaned.
They weren't supposed to be there for another two days, you know you should have sent the letter tomorrow !

P5 Step Siblings AU
So to be clear, the "Thieves" all meet in high school, so before that there's just bits from the three/four individual families and such. So, I'll give you some of those bits
Niijima/Kitagawa/Ishiki
So, I've got stuff for the three wives in this. As stated in the first post, Aichi Niijima is an EMT, spending odd hours at work, the smarts of a healthcare worker with the athleticism of a first responder. It's her goal to always be able to pick up her kids, no matter their age
Sayuri Kitagawa is an elementary school art teacher, who also gets featured in galleries, a lot. She never paints the faces of her children, so they're not plastered everywhere, but they're still on her works from time to time. She is ill, but she keeps moving onwards
And, Wakaba Ishiki. She still researches cognition in her spare time, but after falling for the artist she kept seeing painting in Shibuya, she's settled more. She's a high school technology teacher, and is the one who fights to have Goro in their care
Just. Aichi walking around on her off days with at least one kid clinging to her at all times, if not all of them. Sae is always most reluctant, especially as a teenager, and to convince Goro all anyone needs to do is a little reverse psychology
Her carrying like, 10-year-old Makoto on one side, Yusuke aged 9 on the other, and little Futaba at 8 on her back as she cooks, cleans, etc
Sayuri holding Makoto close during storms, and telling her stories to distract from the fear, never diminishing it or anything. She does the same for Futaba, when the world doesn't make sense, holds her tight until she's back to herself, and. She kisses each of their little heads each morning and night, even when they're not so little anymore
Sakamoto
Poor Tsumiki Sakamoto, raising two wild children. Ryuji is a handful on his own, with his endless energy and innate rebellion against authority, but Ann? The two combined just keep making the other Worse
Like. The best example is their first day of high school, they meet the others cause they're sprinting, convinced that they're late cause their Mom set the clocks a half hour ahead. So, they're actually early
They both love movies, so every other week she uses some of her own paycheck money to bring them to see something, snacks and all. The Takamaki money goes towards food, clothes, rent, etc. her own money goes towards making sure they have the best childhood she can give them
When the power goes out, she builds a little fort in the living room with them, with a flashlight and she reads a book, Ann and Ryuji acting out the different characters. By the end they're out of energy, out cold in the fort, unafraid
Tsukimi fosters Ryuji's love of running, and Ann's love of acting. She helps make Ann's costume for a school play, and switches shifts around at the ramen shop to get to attend the school sports festival and cheer Ryuji on for his first wins
They're not super well off, but they're happy, and loved
Sakura
Sojiro had a few different foster placements before his first foster fail. None of them stay with him for too long, just a step on the path, that's all. But then he gets this little, thin, seven year old girl, who's case was all over the news, because her father was a big CEO
Haru was nervous and shy at first, but he cooks her dinner and lets her watch, asking her to taste test. And, she has her own room, and the door doesn't have to stay closed
Plus, he gently carries her when theyre on the train, letting her hide her face in his shoulder. He keeps the media away from her, until the case is old news. And each month, he brings her to talk to her mom, at a small, high end graveyard
Haru fucking loves Sojiro. She's selected for an adoption viewing at one point and she just- cries. Tells the worker she doesn't wanna go, don't make her leave her dad, and
Sojiro cries. She called him Dad,
Akira gets placed with them after a couple years, when he's twelve and Haru thirteen. It takes him longer to settle in, he's, older than Haru was. Been through a bit more. But, he melts into place there, and soon he's got his own apron to wear while making dinner with his dad and his big sister
And, they get a cat. Akira and Haru find him when walking home from middle school, and don't tell Sojiro at first. Then he finds the cat, and it's that, "dad who didn't want the cat" situations. He buys him little sweaters and shit
Sojiro gave them both the option to keep their old family names. Haru asked to change hers to Sakura the night he formally adopted her. Akira asks after a year, before Sojiro had a chance to reveal he was adopting him
And, they look like a perfect little family. Akira looks strikingly like Sojiro, and his curly hair matches Haru's, so
Bonus: Hasegawa
Now, this is Zenkichi here, so he's all emo cause his wife died. But, he has to be even stronger, cause he agreed to take in the daughters of other victims in a similar case he's convinced is connected. Twins, little gymnasts, older than his daughter
Sumire is quiet for a long time. She and Kasumi share a room, but she opens up first to Akane. Akane asks if her hair is really red, and Sumire nods. Akane says it's her favourite colour
The twins are in middle school, and Akane is pretty young. They won't move to Tokyo until the twins start high school, so they're out in Kyoto?? Anyways. Sumire bonds with Akane before opening up to Zenkichi, and Kasumi is more social, but she doesn't truly open up until she sees Sumire looking comfortable. At home.
Then, Sophia. She's found by local police with no ID, no memories, just a jacket with her name stitched into it. Zenkichi, who already has three daughters, takes her for the night at first, while they work stuff out
She, stays much longer
They joke that she's the missing third twin. ("It's called a triplet", Zenkichi corrects, causing his three girls to laugh. "Twin three!" Akane cheers, the older two following after. Sophia smiles and cheers too. "Twin three!")
When they do move to Tokyo, all three start high school at Shujin, meeting the others for the first time

Terrible Fic Idea #76: The Old Guard, but make it Harry Potter
I've read a lot of Master of Death!Harry Potter fics over the years and one thing that struck me is how so many of the canon MoD tropes - never aging, inability to stay dead - also can be said for The Old Guard's flavor of immortality. So I thought, why not?
Or: What if Harry Potter was raised by The Old Guard?
Just imagine it:
Six months after Merrick, on the night of 31 October, 2019, The Old Guard is woken by dreams of Voldemort killing the Potter Family.
The Guard are not unaware of magic - it's their running theory that something about their magic turning inwards at the time of their first death causes their immortality, rendering them near-squibs who cannot age or die - but they live very much on the fringes of the magical world. And even then most of their contact is with the goblin nation, who couldn't care less about wizards. So it takes some time for them to realize what and who and where.
Their search is not helped by the fact that the child they come to realize is the new immortal is largely kept in a cupboard and rarely allowed to leave the house, rendering them only the tiniest of dream details to search with. They finally manage to track down Harry a year before he's due to start primary school, c. late 2022-early 2023.
Everyone is confused as to why the immortal Harry Potter is aging - and he's very clearly immortal, having survived both the Killing Curse and the Dursley's neglect - but figure he'll stop aging once he reaches adulthood. Which is good, because none of them had any idea what they'd do with an immortal toddler.
Joe and Nicky raise Harry, who is rechristened Hari al-Kaysani after it wins the vote. Harry Potter disappears from the Hogwarts Book of Names, but since only the incoming first year names are readable at any given time, no one notices for years.
(This is helped by Mrs. Figg being conveniently away on holiday when the Dursley's are found neatly murdered in their bed. Dudley is left with most of his memory wiped at a hospital in Plymouth, is taken into foster care, and is eventually adopted by a nice elderly couple. He takes over their antique restoration business when they retire - and is very surprised when the children he and his partner have via surrogate have magic.)
And so it is a very different Hari who attends Hogwarts in 2029 - still a little marked from his childhood traumas, but with a loving, supportive family who have taught him to do no harm but take no shit. His humor is perhaps more morbid than the average 11 year old's, but he is kind and stubborn and has a sense of justice that could double as a knife. He is, naturally, a Hufflepuff.
Hari's school years largely follow canon in plot, if not followthrough. As no one makes the connection between Harry Potter - portrayed in media as an Anglo Gryffindor child savior - and Hari al-Kaysani - hard-working international desi student - he's largely separate from what drama still exists.
First year has the school in a tizzy over Harry Potter's "disappearance", with a few details re: his placement at the Dursley's coming to light in the papers. All this largely passes Hari by until Quirrel decides to kidnap him to use to get past the Mirror. This goes as well as canon, with Hari having to kill Quirrel - and dying himself for the first time since his adoption. His parents are livid and threaten to pull him from Hogwarts unless safety measures improve.
Second year has the petrifications, which Hari doesn't mention to his family, wanting to stay at Hogwarts. This backfires on him when he more or less is dragged into the Chamber by a bewitched Ginny and ends up killing the basilisk. And dying again. Hari exits the Chamber to find his family in full battle gear, preparing to rescue him - and gets the lecture of his life. As does Dumbledore, for being even more careless with student safety. And Ginny, for writing in a cursed book.
This is also when Dumbledore starts to suspect Hari is Harry Potter and adjusts his plans accordingly.
Third year is fairly quiet despite Sirius' breakout. Most of the drama occurs outside the school.
Nicky, having managed to leverage the danger Hari has been in the last two years into a seat on the Hogwarts board of governors, starts ruthlessly pushing for a reform of Hogwarts' security measures and bylaws. He not only manages to block Dementors from Hogwarts, but get most of his concerns addressed. It is one his ward updates which identifies both Sirius and Wormtail on the school grounds. Both get their trials, with Sirius going free and Wormtail being imprisoned.
Nicky manages to use this and his family name to gain a seat on the Wizengamot, which Joe takes up with a more subtle brand of ruthlessness that have all involved ruing the day they agreed to it.
Fourth year goes well, until the Goblet names "Harry Potter" as the fourth champion. As magic is about intent, it doesn't matter that Hari has never thought of himself by that name - he hadn't known his name at all at the Dursleys - the fact that the person who entered him intended for The Boy-Who-Lived to compete in the Tournament and Hari once defeated Voldemort is enough for the Goblet.
Despite Nicky and Joe's best attempts, Hari is still forced to compete. As a result Andy takes up residence at the school as "headmistress" of Hari's unnamed fourth school and makes life a pain for certain responsible parties.
This leads to a lot of drama involving several people being angry he "disguised" himself to attend Hogwarts, "lied" to them about who he was, and/or failed to live up to their expectations. The most drama should come from Sirius, who is angry Hari "hid" from him after his trial.
The Third Task ends as with canon - but with Voldie a little less snakelike and a little more rational, thanks to the immortality in Hari's blood. (And Andy, ever suspicious, manages to catch out fake Moody and reveals him far more publicly, in a way Fudge can't deny.)
Fifth Year goes better than canon. Thanks to Andy capturing Crouch, the public is aware someone tried to revive Voldie. Most believe they failed and it's a fake wandering around causing chaos, but at least they're somewhat aware of the danger.
Fudge is ousted from office, Andy is put in place as the new DADA teacher, and Dumbledore slowly tries to rope Hari back into his schemes, not realizing the Horcrux in him died with Hari during his second death (age 24 months, the Dursley's having left him locked in a hot car) - indeed having no idea of Hari's immortality at all.
The more Dumbledore tries to groom Hari, the more his family makes life difficult for the Headmaster. This should include Booker publishing a better researched, less sensational version of Rita's biography - which has Dumbledore sacked from all his positions but headmaster, though not for lack of trying.
The Guard spends most of the year trying to figure out how Voldie achieved his immortality and what his Horcruxes might be. The Order continues their ineffective business with the prophesy, leading to a big battle in the Ministry in which no children take part but several order members are killed, including Sirius.
Hari, despite never having been close to his godfather in this AU, inherits all - including the Locket.
Sixth Year has Dumbledore try to pull Hari in to private lessons, which is parents refuse to allow. The Guard quietly finds and destroys all the remaining Horcruxes save Nagini - and the ring, which Dumbledore found first. Snape kills a dying Dumbledore at his request when the Death Eaters attack the school at the end of the year... while on the grounds Nile kills a snake and Andy beheads a newly-mortal Voldemort with her labrys.
As the public believe this Voldemort is a pretender, this only gets them limited fame. Which is better for all involved.
(Snape escapes Azkaban only by sharing his memories of Dumbledore's death at his trial, but is asked not to return to Hogwarts.)
Seventh Year is a normal school year, with the adults mopping up Death Eaters on the outside - until the very end of the year, when a rogue Voldemort supporter AKs Hari in the middle of the Great Hall. Andy, who is still DADA teacher, removes the body before he can revive, and thus ends their child hero as far as the Wizarding World is concerned. In "grief" his family disappears from public and in a handful of generations Harry Potter is largely relegated to the history books.
After his death at 17, Hari stops aging and his active magic turns inwards, much like the others. Becoming a near-squib is quite a change, but he has his family and is old enough to join them on their missions in the muggle world. It's not the destiny others hoped for him, but he's happy and loved and, in the end, that's all that matters.
Bonuses include: 1) An exploration of what it means to be desi in the British Wizarding World. Extra bonus points if Hari's background is Pakistani Muslim, simply because I don't think I've seen it done before and I think it could be fascinating, particularly given Joe and Nicky's own backgrounds; 2) An exploration of what it means to be squib or near-squib in the Wizarding World. This shouldn't be a straight linear things are so much better than the past, where we just killed our squibs, but include many ups and downs in treatment throughout history - and the acknowledgement that while squibs are treated much better than they were two hundred years ago, they're still treated much worse than they were a thousand years ago; 3) the Wizarding World being presented as deeply flawed, but no more so than any government of its era. Political polarization and unwillingness to compromise should be at the root of many of its problems. Joe, during his tenure in the Wizengamot, should be renowned for gathering opposing politicians in a room, sitting them down, and forcing them to talk about their issues like unruly children; 4) A misguided Dumbledore who genuinely thinks he's doing the right thing, and 5) Hari starting a societal revolution by being the first at Hogwarts to have a smart phone that works with magic, thank you Uncle Booker.

There's something about this house that doesn't sit right with you. After spending one night here, you feel fear and sadness... but why? Shouldn't these kids be happy they're here and getting adopted? When you were a kid, kids came quickly and left quicker. You never got to spend time with the other kids long enough to form relationships with them. You're the only biological kid of your parents, but they've always wanted more.
Fostering seemed to bring them happiness, and you never questioned it. Now that you have had some time apart from them, you're starting to see things for what they truly are. Like, why don't you hear laughter in the hallway? Why do the kids like to cower in their rooms? Why are they quick to do their chores, but spend hours doing something that should take thirty minutes?
You get up extra early this morning in hopes you can do some digging on your own. You quickly get dressed and head downstairs, pausing in the middle of the stairs to look at the pictures on the wall.
They're all of you. When you were a baby, early toddler years, late childhood era, and well into your teenage years. Some of the younger pictures are of you running around in the backyard naked with the sprinklers on, and others are of you and your dad cuddling on the couch.
Weird how none of these pictures contain your mother.
You head to the kitchen where three kids are eating breakfast. You haven't seen your mom or dad around, so if you're going to ask questions, then now is the time. The kids don't look at you when you enter, they stiffen at your presence.
"Is everything alright?"
You get no response from them. Why are they so scared?
"What's your name?" you ask the little boy that's closest to you.
"James," he says in a quiet voice.
"His name is Joshua."
You turn to see your dad walk into the kitchen. Was he standing there listening in? It seems convenient that he would pop up right as you're asking questions.
"That's not what he says."
"Josh has a big imagination. His favorite superhero is named James, and he loves dressing up as him and pretending he is him. He gets confused a lot." You scrunch your face up in confusion, and your dad clasps his hands together eagerly. "Okay, breakfast time is over. You all have your morning chores to do."
All three kids pack up their things quickly before leaving the kitchen in a hurry. As Joshua passes by you, he mutters something that has your eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"My name is James."
"Where's mom?" you ask.
"She's getting the rest of the kids ready for their chores."
"How many kids are here?"
"About a dozen of all ages."
"You'd think you'd want to retire at your age and not take care of young children."
"I love it," he shrugs.
Your hands fall to your sides, and you feel something in your pocket. Yes, you made sure to bring it as soon as you knew you'd be visiting your parents. You take out the necklace you found in the rubble of your apartment after it was burned down. Without uttering a word, you set the necklace on the kitchen island right in his eye line. He looks at it and immediately stiffens, but he doesn't say a word.
It has always been very hard to read him even while growing up, but you've spent so much time apart that you think you can do it now.
"Do you know what this is? I found it in the ashes of my apartment when it burned down."
"I've been looking for that necklace for years now," your dad says with an easy smile. "I thought I lost it. It must have gotten mixed up with your things." You want to press him for more information, but he's already bringing you into a hug. Just like that, all worries you have drifts away. Nothing is going on with your dad. He's normal, and you're overthinking things. "You've been gone for too long. I'd wish you'd visit more."
"Maybe if you and Mom weren't foster parents, then you could take a vacation and come see me in Virginia."
"We're actually planning a trip soon and another one in a few years. Maybe you can go with us on that one. It'd mean the world to me."
"Of course," you grin. Your phone rings, and you see that your boyfriend is messaging you. "Spencer is here to pick me up." Your dad walks you outside, and he looks at Spencer who stays in the car. "I'll make sure to visit again."
"Maybe without Spencer."
"I don't know why you're being so hard on him. He's a good man and he takes care of me. If you'd give him a chance, you'd love him."
Spencer watches from the front seat, and he drums his fingers on the steering wheel to prevent himself from going out there and dragging you away. Your dad pulls you in for a final hug, and when he pulls away, he kisses your cheek. However, he's so close to the corner of your mouth that he's practically mouth-kissing you.
Spencer's eyes narrow at this.
You pull away from your dad completely, and his hand brushes the underside of your breast. You don't seem to notice, and you jog over to the car. When you get inside, you notice Spencer's sour look.
"What is wrong?" Spencer backs up to make a U-turn, but his eyes never leave your father's. He waits until he's on the main road before addressing what he saw. "Spencer, what is the matter?"
"I don't like the way he kissed and hugged you. He practically kissed you on the mouth. Plus, when he pulled away, he touched your boob."
"I turned my head too soon. It was an accident. It's nothing to get concerned over. You're overthinking it. Everything is okay."
Spencer wants to talk more about this, but you're not in the right mind to listen to him right now.
"I'm going to stay in Vegas for a couple more days. This Riley Jenkins case is bugging me too much to let go. I'd appreciate it if you were to stay with me."
"Spencer, of course, I will. I got your back all the way."
He drives back to the casino where the rest of the team is waiting. Emily looks hungover as fuck, JJ looks amused by her actions, Derek is happily playing the machines while he waits, and Rossi is eager to leave the city.
"Oh, here they come right now," Derek says when he notices you two walk in. "You know what, I don't even want to know what you two were doing."
"Don't be nasty. I was with my parents. He picked me up," you roll your eyes.
"Hotch is already at the airstrip. How fast can you two pack?" JJ asks.
"Actually, we're gonna stay for a couple of days."
"Is everything alright?"
"Yeah, I just haven't seen my mom for a really long time, so I'd like a few more days."
"I want to spend more time with my parents. I don't see them often either."
"Are you sure?" Rossi asks, looking at him with an unreadable expression.
"Yeah."
"Okay, take a few days. Do what you need to do."
The whole team shuffles out of the casino after saying their goodbyes. As soon as they are out of earshot, Spencer turns to you with a serious look.
"The next time you go visit your parents, I'm going with you."
"Spencer," you sigh.
"Y/N, your dad is getting too close to you that's conceived as normal."
"He's my dad, Spencer. What harm can he do?"
"You've been at this job long enough to know anyone is capable of anything and is good at hiding it."
You sigh in frustration, but you don't want to fight.
"Nothing is going on, but if you want to come, then you can. Now, where do we start with Riley?"
"The local police station."
Everything in Vegas is practically within walking distance and by car, it's even quicker. Spencer is very nervous, especially when Vegas PD doesn't know you're coming. The station isn't busy for being in a busy city, but there isn't an available officer to help you. You approach one who is sitting at a desk.
"Excuse me? My name is Y/N and this is Dr. Spencer Reid. We're with the FBI." You and Spencer flash him your badge. "We'd like to see everything you have about the 1984 murder of a boy named Riley Jenkins."
"Of course."
He pauses what he is doing to get that information for you. A detective returns instead of the officer, but he has the boxes you're asking about. He brings you to his office to discuss this privately.
"I'm Detective Hyde, the detective on the case. This was a rough one," he sighs.
"Did you work the case?" you ask.
"Yeah. I was three or four blocks away when the call came in on the radio. My first kid. You don't forget those."
"Can I ask you this? Were there any suspects?" Spencer wonders.
"The family, initially. We thought it could have been the dad or the older brother."
"That makes sense. I heard the boy was found in his basement, right?"
"Yeah. After a while, the family got defensive and stopped cooperating. It reminded me of the Jon-Benet case. The family being suspects never sat right with me. I always thought that it was someone outside the home. What's the bureau's interest in the case?"
"Research," you smile and gesture to the box he brought in. "Is this everything?"
"There might be another box down in records."
"We'd like to see it all if you don't mind."
Detective Hyde leaves his office and returns with one more box. You and Spencer each carry one box as you make your way back to the hotel room. Spencer paid for extra days out of his own money since the FBI is no longer needed in Las Vegas. You and Spencer walk down the hallway silently, but you frown when you see his hotel door open partially. Someone is talking inside the room, and you set your box on top of Spencer's so he's carrying both of them. You slide your gun out of the holster and push open the door slowly.
Derek and Rossi are sitting on the chairs watching a soap opera. You sigh in relief and lower your gun, and they turn to you with a smile.
"What are you guys doing here?" Spencer asks and closes the door with his foot.
"What's it look like we're doing?"
"Breaking into our room and watching 'Days of Our Lives'."
"Aren't you supposed to be on a plane back to D.C?" Spencer asks.
"Aren't you supposed to be hanging out with your mom?" Rossi bites back.
"Is this about Riley Jenkins?"
"No, it's not--that's not why I'm here."
Spencer is a terrible liar when it comes to his personal life. He can lie very well when it doesn't affect him.
"Reid, come on, man. Who do you think you're talking to? I know what this has been doing to you. Let us help."
"Maybe we can figure out who killed him. Together."
"They have a point," you whisper to Spencer.
"I think I might already know."
"Tell us about the suspect."
"The truth is, I don't know anything about him. He's my father."
You weren't expecting that, but you're not going to tell Spencer he might be wrong. He's right, you never know what anyone is capable of. Family or otherwise.
"Before we go down this road, you need to be sure."
"He's right," Derek backs Rossi up. "Some rocks don't need looking under."
"My mind is sending me signals. I can't ignore them anymore."
"If Spencer suspects his father, then we should support him. Family doesn't mean they're safe."
If only you'd listen to him about your own father.
"Reid, your dad left you. If you take it to the Freudian extreme, you could say that he killed your childhood. It could explain a dream in which you see him as a murderer."
"I've come this far, I'm not going back."
"Okay, we're with you," you say and take a seat on the bed with Spencer. "Tell us about what you remember about the murder."
"Riley was six at the time. His father, Lou Jenkins, was supposed to pick him up from t-ball practice at four. He got delayed at work, prompting Riley to walk the three blocks home. When his mother got home in the early evening, she found him dead in the basement."
"Either the offender came to the house after the boy arrived home, or he picked him up on the way there. He could have coaxed Riley into the basement where he sexually assaulted him."
"His mouth was taped shut," Spencer says. "The unsub must have feared Riley would talk, panics, weighs his options, and decides to make certain he'll never talk."
"He finds a knife in the fishing gear under the stairs and stabs Riley nine times in the chest before stuffing him behind the washing machine. If the unsub was a white male in his late twenties to early thirties when the crime was committed, then we're looking for someone in his fifties."
"He likely knew the boy. Maybe he's even been to his house like a neighbor," Derek thinks out loud. Spencer looks down and widens his eyes in horror. "Reid? What is it?"
"My family lived less than half a mile from the Jenkins'."
"Do you think your dad knew the boy?" Rossi asks.
"I don't know. My memory's lack of recall just reinforces how little I knew about him."
"Baby, you know we're going to have to track him down, right?"
"We should talk to my mother first along with some neighbors."
You know he doesn't want to see his dad, and he's doing everything he can to avoid him. You look at Rossi and Derek, and you know they're thinking the same thing you are.
"Reid, I don't need to tell you that this signature was need-based and sexual. The man we're looking for is a pedophile. So, I'll ask you again. Are you sure you want to go down this road?" Rossi asks carefully.
"I have to know," he whispers.
"I'm with you." You reach over and grab his hand. "I'm with you until the end."

The impression that I get of James is that he was very proud of his self-image as "a good king", "a good Christian", and "a good husband", based on his ever-so-clever reading of Scripture and philosophy. Picture the most horrible Arrogant Smart Kid Syndrome, formed by being the smartest person in the (very small) room for many years, which was never properly challenged by reality, because he's the king. The True Law of Free Monarchies and Basilokon Doron just drip with this attitude. Therefore, his self-image as magnanimous, benevolent, and faithful to his queen was important to him, even if in reality he was not these things.

There are two rather different images of the courtship of James and Anna (who was very young, just 14-15 to James's 22-23). On the one hand, James is said to have instantly fallen in love with her portrait almost as soon as marriage negotiations opened, to have written to her ardently, written poetry for her, and then of course have boldly sailed to "rescue" her in 1589. There is a story that when they first met in the flesh, James rushed over and kissed her "in the Scottish style", which repelled her (she thought it was very forward), but they later came to an understanding about this when the cultural difference was explained.
Yet also, James himself wrote of his reasons for sailing to his bride in October 1589:
As to the causes, I doubt not it is manifestly known to all how far I was generally found fault with by all men for the delaying so long of my marriage. The reasons were that I was alone, without father or mother, brother or sister, king of [Scotland] and heir apparent of England. This my nakedness made me to be weak and my enemies stark. One man was as no man, and the want of hope of succession bred disdain. Yea, my long delay bred in the breasts of many a great [suspicion] of my inability, as if I were a barren stock. These reasons and innumerable others, hourly objected, moved me to hasten the treaty of my marriage; for, as to my own nature, God is my witness I could have abstained longer nor the weal of my patrie could have permitted.
Basically, "I could have remained unmarried forever, but I have to get heirs for political stability". He was also noted for being coldly hard-assed in the dowry negotations.
Apparently their very early marriage was warm, but Anna was criticized for not immediately producing a child. When she was pregnant with Henry Frederick, IIRC rumors flew that he was not James's but that of Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox (Esmé Stewart's son, therefore James's second cousin, who was also rumored to be a favorite of James's. Yes. This family is tangled and fucked up.) James was said to be jealous over this -- but was he jealous, or was he sensitive about the renewed rumors that Anna did not conceive by him because he was busy with his male favorites? (In reality, Anna had conceived immediately after their marriage, but then suffered a miscarriage.)
The marital relationship was then absolutely torpedoed by James's insistence on Henry Frederick being fostered at Stirling Castle by the Earl of Mar (the same Earl of Mar with whom he had huge childhood drama). This was traditional for Scottish heirs, and it was also sensible, as James and Anna were put in regular physical danger by rebellious lords, who you must remember repeatedly kidnapped young James and absolutely would pull all sorts of power shenanigans if they could lay hands on the heir. However, Anna was understandably furious and devastated by her separation from Henry. This became a huge battleground of their marriage, and James did not give way until the 1603 accession to the English throne, and it really ruined any affection Anna had for James. After that, Anna was often embroiled in schemes with factions that have grievances with James, like Bothwell and the Ruthvens. When the Ruthvens supposedly tried to assassinate James, Anna accused James of fabricating the whole thing. And as their children (Henry Frederick, Elizabeth, and Charles) grew up, Anna was often subtly working on them and turning them against their father (which wasn't hard because James was an awful, totally uninvolved father).
It is said that Anna once """"accidentally"""" killed one of James's favorite hunting dogs named Jewel.
Despite this, I would say that James always respected Anna… as much as he was capable of respecting any woman. Because James was really a misogynist, even more than the typical man of his time. His thoughts about marriage, and about the respect one should give one's wife, are clearly articulated in Basilokon Doron, and it's not pretty. (Full text is online here) Essentially, he gave Anna what he thought a wife should have from her husband: condescension, indulgence, honor before other ladies, sexual attention and fidelity (men don't count, ofc). James, one must remember, had a strong sense of himself as a divine right king, God's representative on Earth. The position of queen therefore also had an aura of the divine, and deserved respect for that - but not for her personhood, personality, or ideas. This is the man who is wearing a bejeweled "A" on his hat to celebrate his love for his wife at the same time he denies her access to her child and basically opposing her in court schemes.
Treat her as your own flesh, command her as her Lord, cherish her as your helper, rule her as your pupill, and please her in all things reasonable; but teach her not to be curious in things that belong to her not.
Something interesting is that when James learned of Anna's secret conversion to Catholicism, he told her he had no issue with her following her conscience as long as she kept it under wraps for the sake of political stability. For this time that's remarkably tolerant, both of Anna and of Catholicism.
Both Goodman and Weldon (remember them? writing from totally opposite English Civil War factions, one pro-Stuart and one anti-Stuart) described James as "not very uxorious". Maybe because he was too gay to really love his wife; maybe, as Goodman accused, Anna did not give him much cause to love her (can you blame her!?). But certainly there was not the sort of effusive affection for Anne he would show to his male favorites.
Over time the king and queen lived more and more separately. Until a miscarriage in 1606, after which Anna decided she was done with pregnancies, they continued to sleep together, but emotionally their lives were rather divorced. Especially after 1606 but IIRC even before, a separate "king's court" (dominated by James's male favorites) and "queen's court" developed. Real political power was located in the king's court, of course, but Anna used her influence to create a much more culturally sophisticated and artistically influential court. The Jacobean flourishing of the arts is more attributable to Anna's patronage than to James's (he fell asleep during plays and much more enjoyed watching a good debate).
But, I feel that their relationship somewhat recovered with time. In the more peaceful environment of England, they negotiated a sort of understanding, and had a cool but amicable relationship, sometimes working as partners and sometimes at cross purposes.
Anna's attitude to James's favorites seems to have been ambivalent. On the one hand, she was said to have understood "the king could not exist without his favorites" (I tried to find the source for this quote and failed but I'll look again later), and for his part he allowed her some degree of veto over his favorites, if only so that if she complained later, he could tell her "But you recommended him to me!" But it doesn't seem like she was happily indulgent - rather, pragmatic.
Also, as regards the Gowrie Conspiracy, Michael B. Young, author of King James and the History of Homosexuality, relates a conspiracy theory (not Young's own invention) that the Ruthvens might have lured James in not with a pot of gold (what a ridiculous story) but with sex appeal, and that Anna's reaction to the plot subtly accused him of this. And I believe it because I blindly believe everything that Michael B. Young says.
Even though James barely interacted with her by the point of her death in 1619, he was reportedly pretty upset about it, writing her a commemorative poem and going into a depression. You could say that his failure to appear at her funeral (it was Charles who was chief mourner) was evidence of his not caring very much, but some historians, like IIRC Rictor Norton, say that Anna's death actually triggered a minor breakdown for James, who was now facing his own mortality as well, due to his worsening illnesses. James may have also avoided the funeral because he had a longstanding fear of death, disease, and funerals (he also did not attend Henry Frederick's, and likewise that can be read as absence of love, depression, and/or neuroticism.)
IMO, the M&G monologue that I reblogged is not a bad take on the overall tone. I actually don't think James would have been so self-aware or ever considered that God was against any of his ideas, but it captures the ambivalence.

Some folk really do not deserve kids. Case in point, Furina's parents. Hopefully, Freminet's mom joins in on the court case, she did have her child more or less taken from her. Arlecchino investigating good and hard on everyone these two harmed or messed. They are not leaving jail anytime soon, preferably ever once Neuvillette wins the case.
Ah, yes, the best ways to bond: mutual suffering. Makes me wonder how long the war against Celestia lasted, poor Neuvi had to live with his failure to save not just Focalors, but Furina as well.
Can't really fault the Knave for being too intense, it's amusing to imagine and I think she deserves some unhealthy possessiveness. It does translate into Furina getting lots of love and affection, and just affirming the stance that Arle is the best person for Furina. But, that's also because a certain someone has been getting rid of any prospective lovers.
I almost want a coworker of Furina and Arlecchino to remember and just side eye this "friendship". Hmmm, not sure who would fit that. None of the Harbingers give off entertainment industry vibes and the image of Scara or Childe finding out via a movie and choking on their food and drink is just too funny to let go of. Maybe Clorinde manages to work her way into being a minor character on a set or two? Or, someone else...
And awwwh, that's.. nice? Cute doesn't fit because the situation is pretty screwed up, but hey, Furina is learning that Arlecchino is plenty reliable and especially angry for Furina and Freminet's sake. Arle sticking to Furina's side whenever she can in the courtroom, always positioning herself in front of Furina when the parents try to talk to her. Definitely glaring at the parents, who quickly back down or maybe they don't, 'cause some people don't deserve survival instincts.
Also! Furina introducing Arlecchino to her little brother since he's been taken out of their dad's custody with the court case on. Arle speaking super softly to Freminet.

Indeed, Furi and Fremi parents are Foster Child of such sentiment. Arlecchino collecting every person they fucked over will be pretty cathartic, the start of the most unhiged era of the Stan account.
Reading that I totally imagined Childe, either as an actor or stunt double, maybe both, coming across Arlefuri and simply noping out. Nope, he never liked Arlecchino to begin with, he is not getting involved om her messy love life, not again.
Arlecchino reaction totally changes the way Furina sees her like, yeah they are friends but Furina does think that she is sometimes weird and is afraid that because since Arle was her fan the weird behavior is because Arlecchino has her in a pedestal. But Arle behavior during the trial shows her not only Arlecchino is reliable, but that she will not look down on Furina just because she is vulnerable and not the perfect star she pretends to be.
Freminet meeting with Arlecchino, I kinda have this idea that, due being raised along with Furina, his memories of the past life were unlocked very early and sadly childhood amnesia is a thing. He does remember more than Furina of course, but is a lot less clear and reliable than those who unlocked their memories as teens and adults, he probably assumed that those memories where dreams and the people he meet where imaginary friends.

Hey yall, Hey! This may possibly be a difficult blog to follow with so a bit of a disclaimer. Some of my family history with mental illness, drug addiction and abuse will be mentioned. Please protect your heart and mind and proceed with caution if you so choose to continue reading.
I sit almost daily with my thoughts. One in particular, "my life was/is a shit show. There's no way people are going to believe I went through all of this." While I am an open book, some stuff I hold close because of this very thought. In all honesty, this thought is encompassed with fear and protection. I'm afraid that some of the deepest darkest things I've experienced won't be believed. Sure, who cares? Well, I do. If I'm not believed, then Little Me is silenced again. AND THAT THOUGHT is still what needs healing!
I came into this world swinging. My biological mother was addicted to crack/cocaine. She hit before I made it earthside, and I was born addicted as well. I used to be ashamed that I was "Crack baby." Especially growing up in the 90s. The many foster homes I jumped around to had no problem bringing it to my attention. I was slightly bullied for being a crack baby, a foster kid, and having a mother who was addicted to it and known for sleeping around town to get it. I say slightly because I learned how to fight early, and I didn't play those games. I also knew my mother was going to come back for me, and if you said anything that didn't align with that, I was meeting you on the blacktop or the streets... imagine little 5 year old me scrappin. Yeah... I know... Plot twist. She never came and that was the best thing that could ever happen. Save this for another blog.
I fought away from home because I could never fight at home. I say quite often that my memory from childhood is a blessing and a curse but mostly a curse. I remember my first assaults happening while I was in pull-ups. I didn't understand what was happening, clearly, but I remember being told that it was okay, because this is how "dads show their love" My biological father was nonexistent but my foster parent at the time had a boyfriend... And we were to call any man she had "dad"... I was potty trained fairly early, however, I'd have accidents quite often... sometimes they were true accidents out of fear and other times once I caught on... they were intentional. Somehow, I felt a whooping was far greater than "dad's love" and other times, well, both were equally unbearable.
I became too much of a problem for this foster home and eventually social services came and got me. I moved to another foster home but I never escaped the assaults and the abuse. Each home I went to became worse than the one before. The physical, emotional, mental, sexual abuse I endured is unfathomable at times. I also sit and wonder how I really went through this all and managed to make it to this day to write about it all. The simple answer is God! I'm a firm believer that He covered my heart and mind for all of these years because He knew there was a purpose far greater than I could have ever dreamed for myself and nothing... NO THING OR PERSON was going to stop that. To say I don't struggle mentally about it all would be a lie. I have PTSD, depression and anxiety. Looking at me, you'd have no idea but baaaaaby it's rough. However, I do the work to heal and find healthy coping mechanisms to get me through on the hardest days.
Peloton plays a huge role in my mental fortitude. On days when I am unable to get into a therapy session, I check in to therapy on my bike, mat, or treadmill. Movement is really medicine. I say all of this to say that we all have stories. We all have journies, and while they may not all be the same, one thing we all hold in common is our truth. We all hold autonomy over them, and there isn't a soul on earth that can take it from us. So, while my story (this is a TINY fraction of what I've endured) is absolutely horrid and unbelievable to someone out there, my truth is mine. I KNOW there's someone out there who is living or lived, maybe even a fraction of what I did who needs to hear it and may find solace in knowing they are not alone and that there's so much beautiful life to be lived beyond the confinment of our Trauma. For that very reason, I will continue to honor not only the things that have made me the person I am today, but I will forever honor Little Me, who deserves to be free and validated... BY ME! May you find the courage one day to do the same!
