my sirius & harry thought of the day:
harry kept that firebolt alive for all 137 years of his remaining life through sheer willpower and magical strength. he did not let a single twig of it die off. not only was he absolutely unhinged about taking care of it, not letting anyone near it after 5th year, but he also basically single-handedly reinvented the field of broom-crafting just so he could keep his godfather’s gift to him alive. he didn’t do anything with this skill, basically driving everywhere who knew him spare bc !!! ‘harry do u know what u just did? most brooms don’t last over 6-7 years, not even a fraction of that if used at the pace and frequency as u. if u could just—‘
and he just flat out shuts them up bc how does he tell them that the reason his firebolt is still alive is bc sirius’ love runs thru it and harry would die himself before he let it bc he can’t lose the last piece of sirius he has left. he cannot perform this miracle on any other broom, tho he can probably make the single best non-sirius-gifted broom that the WW has ever seen just bc of how extensive his knowledge is now
and the thing, right, is he doesn’t keep the firebolt locked up in some display like some artefact. sirius would’ve never wanted that. his dad would’ve hated it. brooms were meant to be flown. so fly, he does. wonderfully. it’s forever his primary broom and he puts it thru all the paces, keeping up with all sorts of newer, flashier, pro models w utter ease.
it’s like this: when he uses this firebolt, it feels like perhaps he has his godfather back for just a second. and harry is forever weak to that feeling.

Wood Warping and Flying Brooms
Back in the day before Air Control was a thing flutes had this little quirk where they would sound different depending on the weather and season. This is becuase in hotter weather the wood would warp changing the shape thus changing the sound. Now Metal flutes were also a thing as well but would also experience warping. This is why a lot of instruments require specific storage conditions.
So what if it applied to brooms?
What if during the summer you got longer, looser, and slippier, control(Such as most turns ending up with more drift) but faster speed while in colder weather maybe things got more tighter?
Maybe some broom brands look to counteract this with built in heating and freezing charms? But in turn maybe the wood chips and looses it's enchantments faster causing more flying issues.
Or how about some brooms try less of a spell solution and more enchantments; carving out the middle to carves small runes for more stabilizing enchantments that would belong inside houses, then sealing up the inside hoping that it'll keep shape from inside to out?
This might cause other issues such as weight and doesn't deal with warping on the outside which could affect shape thus doesn't maximize the efficiency.
You could counter act that by making the runes 3d through metal castings(Like letter magnets but for magic symbols) that are then put down in interlocking order to make only certain runes interact with each other in the desired way? But then you might have to worry about the runes themselves warping or again, the weight issues. Plus the upkeep of the inners could pose a challenge for far less experienced broom riders and owners.
Some perhaps look at flutes for a solution, ending up with a glass handle broom? A cool design for the more fancy acrobatic type. This however could cause many problems, as sitting on heated glass or crystal in the summer is Not Great.
Well you could always put the crystal or glass as the base of the broom and then added wooden "furniture" for better writing.
But if you play Quidditch then this becomes a hazard. Instead of snapping due to hitting a blunder the broom would shatter. The shards could get caught in the wounds and while magical healing can fix up the wounds themselves the removal of shards is not part of standard healing. You better hope the following 'Accio Glass Shards' doesn't cause so many cuts that you're dead before the healing spells and potions can be given to you and work their magic.
Maybe that's what the different brands fight over, why some have preferences to certain kinds of brooms, why some might be cheaper than others outside of some just being "Newer Brooms".

Voldemort: I'll k*ll you the second you step out of that school. Harry: So does that mean you'll help me get my broom back? Umbridge took it and has the grounds watched 24/7. Kinda hard to sneak out without it.

UDLTTOM DIALOGUE DRAFT #68
*Harry & Tom circling opposite sides of a courtyard fountain*
Tom (to Harry): This is getting out of hand, Evans.
Harry: What are you talking about, Riddle?
Tom: You know perfectly well what I’m talking about!
Harry: If you got something to say to me, why don’t you spit it out, Riddle?
Tom (changes directions & Harry hurries to do the same): Seriously?! This! You’re outright avoiding me! You’re not even bothering with subtlety anymore! We look ridiculous!
Harry: Well, maybe if you respected my boundaries, I wouldn’t have to keep a literal courtyard fountain in between us—
*Avery & Burke watching on the sidelines*
Lyra: How long has this been going on?
Ignotus (sighing): About ten minutes.
Lyra: Isn’t it your job to intervene in these sort of situations?
Ignotus (waving around a sandwich): I’M EATING MY LUNCH! Evans can survive for ten more minutes without me.
*Harry & Tom still circling*
Lyra: It’s kinda hypnotizing if you stare at it. Like two koi fish in a pond.
Ignotus: I’m about to lock them in a broom closet! It’s been two weeks of this! Two weeks, Burke! I got better things to be doing than being a literal cockblock.
Lyra: That would interfere with the pool.
Ignotus: I. Don’t. Care. Are you in or not?
Lyra (knowing she’d win the betting pool if she agrees): I’m in.

Dangerous Daydreams: Chapter 19 of The In-Betweens (6th Year)
Tumblr media
Written for #severalsunlitdaylights, Inspired by Treacherous (Taylor's Version)
Thanks for hosting, @corneliaavenue-ao3!!
Full Chapter
Excerpt:
Her parents had tried gifting her a used training broom that skimmed pathetically over the ground with a built in height limit. A safe, stable, risk-free broom. Ones babies used. They hadn’t understood, and maybe still didn’t. Part of the thrill was the height. Where she could twist, turn, roll without coming anywhere close to the ground.  She loved the rush of peaking down, feeling that momentary stab of fear. Then overcoming it by focusing forward, speeding ahead until all thought of it vanishes.  There was never time for thinking. Only reacting. Letting her reflexes take over, discovering what she, herself, was capable of. She’d have to land eventually, that was part of it. But for a while, she could pretend the earth below didn’t exist.
Of course, shout out and thanks to the brilliant @fizzyginfizz for beta-reading! 🥂

Double Standards: Quidditch Merit Edition
Hermione Granger is a hypocrite.
Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 7 - MUDBLOODS AND MURMURS
“At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,” said Hermione sharply. “They got in on pure talent.”
Hmm...pure talent you say...
Harry in book 1 getting on the team due to Gryffindor nepotism
“I shall speak to Professor Dumbledore and see if we can’t bend the first-year rule. Heaven knows, we need a better team than last year. Flattened in that last match by Slytherin, I couldn’t look Severus Snape in the face for weeks. . . .” Professor McGonagall peered sternly over her glasses at Harry. “I want to hear you’re training hard, Potter, or I may change my mind about punishing you.”
Hermione in book 6 sabotaging Cormac in tryouts for Ron
“I thought I was going to miss that fourth penalty,” Ron was saying happily. “Tricky shot from Demelza, did you see, had a bit of spin on it —” “Yes, yes, you were magnificent,” said Hermione, looking amused. “I was better than that McLaggen anyway,” said Ron in a highly satisfied voice. “Did you see him lumbering off in the wrong direction on his fifth? Looked like he’d been Confunded. . . .” To Harry’s surprise, Hermione turned a very deep shade of pink at these words. Ron noticed nothing; he was too busy describing each of his other penalties in loving detail.
Rules for thee and not for me - the true Gryffindor House motto
Hermione can go screw herself and choke on her self righteousness.

I have this headcanon that Ron became a Broom Maker.
Just like there are wand-makers, there have to be broom makers, right?
And Ron has a great knowladge and passion for Quidditch, and I believe he is one od these people who are "technical" smart and this would be a perfect proffesion for him.
He made his first broom in a garage, it was wobly and you couldn't fly on it for more than one minute but it was one of his proudest moments.
Harry and Ginny were his guinea pigs and thanks to their feedback he got better and better.
He found the teacher and he studied different woods, branches, materials and how they work best for brooms to be fast, light and comfortable.
And after a few years The Weasley Manufacture was known for making one of the best brooms in England which were used by best Quidditch players in the world.
