Barbenheimer: Twisted Wonderland
Did they see Barbie or Oppenheimer?
Riddle saw neither just because he's not a fan of movies. However, Cater convinced him to see Barbie and he actually enjoyed it a lot.
Trey saw Barbie because both of his siblings wanted to go. He also went to Oppenheimer by himself because it looked somewhat interesting, but he liked Barbie more.
Cater saw Barbie because she's a girls girl of course. He originally just wanted to see it because he thought it would be cute, but he had an absolute breakdown over the ending.
Ace saw Oppenheimer because that's the more "manly" one, but he lowkey understood none of it. He only went to Barbie because some friends (*cough* Yuu *cough*) dragged him along. He'll never admit that he liked it.
Deuce saw Oppenheimer because he was interested in the more technological aspects like the bomb mechanics, but it wasn't his thing. He doesn't go see Barbie just because it's not his prefered genre, but he still respects it for what it is.
Leona sees Barbie because he's chill like that, plus Cheka wanted to go with him. He purposely avoids Oppenheimer because it sounded boring to him and he's not gonna pay for a nap when he can sleep at home.
Ruggie saw both. He was Oppenheimer first with the intent of watching Barbie after as a way to cheer himself up, but he cried more for Barbie and regretted not watching it first instead.
Jack saw neither because he's not the type to watch movies at a theater, but he does plan on watching Barbie with his sister once it comes out on DVD or a streaming service.
Azul claims he watched Oppenheimer to look cool, but he lowkey went and saw Barbie. He cried the most out of anyone and refuses to admit it.
Jade saw both. He admits to liking Oppenheimer more, but he appreciates the message and story of Barbie, and the vibes were much better in his opinion.
Floyd saw Barbie. Jade tried to convince him to watch Oppenheimer as well, but Barbie was more fun than a movie about "some dumb bomb" according to Floyd.
Kalim saw Barbie and started sobbing the moment it got even a little sad. Also, Allen was his favorite character and he refuses to elaborate when asked.
Jamil saw Oppenheimer by himself and Barbie with Kalim. He enjoyed Oppenheimer more, but that might also be because Kalim wasn't there to talk throughout the entire movie.
Vil saw Barbie because of course he did. He was probably attended the premier and had a great time watching. He did contemplate watching Oppenheimer, but decided against it upon hearing reviews.
Rook saw both. He enjoyed the story of Oppenheimer more, but he did like the vibes and messaging from Barbie. He probably liked Ken a little too much and Vil probably needs to stage an intervention of some kind.
Epel saw Oppenheimer for the same reason as Ace. However, Vil forced him to watch Barbie as well, and he did end up liking it more than he thought he would. Unlike Ace, he has no problem admitting this.
Idia saw Oppenheimer for the fun techie stuff like Deuce, and saw Barbie for the fun girlypop vibes like Cater. By saw, I, of course mean he made Ortho bring his tablet to both so that he didn't have to leave his room.
Ortho saw both because of the reasons above. He enjoyed Barbie more, but he thought both were really good and did a great job of achieving what they set out to do.
Malleus saw Barbie because Lilia dragged him along. It wasn't his favorite movie ever, but he appreciate it and learned a lot about human culture because of it.
Lilia saw Barbie because Cater and Kalim told him all about it and he had to see it for himself. Naturally, he drags Malleus, Silver, and Sebek along.
Silver saw both but fell asleep halfway through Oppenheimer because it started getting boring. He almost fell asleep during Barbie, but Lillia kept him awake.
Sebek saw both. Lilia dragged him along to see Barbie, which he liked fine, and he saw Oppenheimer with Silver, which he liked more.

Flügel / A Kaleidoscope of Life ~ Moon 2023
Tumblr media
4.5-year awaited Grand Theater return on September 22 (before things) ft. my eyes dead from the unseasonable heat and yet another failed attempt to get my FLYING SAPA REFUND FROM 2020 THAT THEY STILL OWE ME.
This, unexpectedly, turned out to be the hands-down Takarazuka highlight of Tadaima ’23, and that’s… despite a play of extremely questionable content. Tsukigumi—Mugen Musou / Krung Thep—had the honor of being my last live Takarazuka before the shit hit the fan globally, and the troupe is such different vibes I felt like I stepped through a portal (not that Yukigumi isn’t, dear lord, but small theaters are always a little weird vibe-wise). I had a feeling this would be my first and last live top Tsukishiro Kanato, and she did indeed announce taidan days later. We have no shortage of 95th top stars, but, since I was a hardcore Yukigumi fan ten years ago, Reiko is the only one I’ve been closely following since her shinko days. She’s gotten so good, and every time I’ve watched her since the Romance Gekijou stream, I’ve seen in her movements and expressions that she's absolutely watched Komu on repeat in her moments of doubt. It makes my heart sing.
FLÜGEL SPOILERS (can’t believe I’m saying this again, but cw suicide, also nazis 🙄):
If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Gee, you know whose take I’d love on the politics of a divided Germany? TAKARAZUKA’S,” well, maybe this show is for you! It’s the 1980s (although you wouldn’t know it till they bust a hole through the Wall… they really dropped the ball on costuming) and Jonas (Reiko) is a GDR officer who grew up thinking his mother (Shirayuki Sachika) was a nazi after she was arrested in his childhood for war crimes and they were separated on opposite sides of the partitioned country. After we open with a completely historically inaccurate scene from the Russian Afghan war (just SCREAMS Takarazuka, doesn’t it?), Jonas is put in charge of overseeing an East German concert featuring wildly popular West German idol Nadia (Umino Mitsuki), while other GDR officer Helmut (Houzuki An) is tasked with keeping an eye on them/preventing spying or something (idk, this plot doesn’t hold a ton of water to be honest). The general conflict is that Team Reiko is pro-unification, and Team Chinatsu is staunchly anti. Amidst a flurry of various activities that realistically would have gotten Jonas thrown in the gulag 1000 times over—including helping old war buddy?? Amashi Juri escape to West Germany via an underground route operated by Irodori Michiru and Haon Mika—Team Helmut attempts to dampen pro-unification sentiment by plotting a terrorist attack at the concert (in the form of an exploding microphone) and pinning it on a priest (Yumena Rune) and his band of peaceful student protestors. Thanks to Jonas and Luis Wagner (Kazama Yuno), who is Nadia’s manager and also secretly the best spy in the world or something, the mic is retrieved and the plan is thwarted. When Nadia returns to West Germany, she is moved to become a pro-unification activist thanks to the friends she made on the other side, and leads a protest that results in breaking the wall down. Helmut, unable to cope with the defeat of his ideology, takes his own life quite dramatically (so be aware of that). After travel is permitted between east and west, Jonas discovers that his mother (aging with dementia), while employed by the nazis, actually used her position to help Jews escape. Jonas and Nadia don’t fall in love, but they do look off into the sky together in hope and friendship.
I really did not care for this plot, yet somehow I also didn’t absolutely hate watching it. I think there were enough isolated highlights to make the experience worth it:
I! Love! Reiko! And I’m so happy I got to see her as top once! And her voice is fantastic lately!
Reiko and Chinatsu have an unexpectedly compelling chemistry
Chinatsu has an unexpected chemistry with me and my feelings
The final protest scene (set to a dramatic rendition of Ode to Joy) features Chinatsu repeatedly trying to hit Reiko, while Reiko just blocks all her punches and stares straight into her eyes. It’s a lot.
I had similar feelings watching Oda as I did watching Agachin; she wore those 4.5 years loud and proud. +1000 confidence, absolutely ready for her nibante era.
Nice little send off role for Ren Tsukasa, who is ABSOLUTELY BELOVED. People cheered the theater down for her, it was genuinely moving. No one in anything else I saw got that much applause except for maybe Kaiho Naoto.
KALEIDOSCOPE SPOILERS:
This, brainchild of Kurita-sensei making her revue debut, was the revue of the year, and probably the revue of all pandemic era for me. It was fresh, it had a theme, the music slapped, it actually called back a little to Ogita-sensei who I will miss in tkz until the end of time. LET WOMEN MAKE REVUES!!
The premise is a journey through different eras of Tokyo, triggered by the turn of a magic kaleidoscope. Each era’s scene is beautifully designed, and has a little self-contained plot. The transitions are seamless, and I loved the song choices (CITY! POP! CHUUZUME!). Tsukigumi as a whole is vocally outstanding right now, and the impact was awesome. Verbal descriptions don’t do it justice! If you’re tired of Fujii/Saitou/Nakamura B throwing all their old scenes into a tumble dyer and pulling them back out in a random order, watch Kaleidoscope, even if you aren’t a fan of Tsukigumi.

the harley quinn show being on the precipice of being canceled in what feels like an absolute renaissance of harlivy content is going to be such a devastating blow
between season 3 and g. willow wilson’s poison ivy series, we’ve finally gotten a chance to see them written as a real relationship, not tokenized or sexualized in anyway, and it’s been so fucking wonderful to see after YEARs of undergoing countless depictions of both villains being written purely as sex sexy sex symbols FOR THE BOYS, eyyy look at these broads gammin’ on each other hereeee!!!
and i know it’s all due to the absolutely buckwild financial decisions of a corporate merger (they are absolutely self-immolating hbo max and it’s like the only ✨decent✨ streaming service) and it would be very reactionary of me to say it’s a homophobic decision, but queer content is always going first on the chopping block. investors aren’t queer, they’re all like 80 year old men and crypto-bros because we live in hell
so I’m deeply heartbroken (if it does get canceled). but i’m also deeply emboldened? Harlivy isn’t going anywhere as a ship?
i started out as a harlivy fanfic writer about a year ago, essentially with the goal of writing this glitzy gritty live action gotham city sirens show that somebody like me would absolutely never get full creative rights to do, and over that year, I’ve gotten so many kind comments from people who have actually felt represented for a change, and I’ve gotten to interact so many wonderful artists and other absolutely amazing fan-fiction writers who all bring their own unique twists to these characters while lovingly taking and improving on the absolutely LOADED history of the two characters
so, yeah, as a ship, it’s not going anywhere even if the show gets canceled.
like every ship, it’s something so many people find comfort in. they were a stepping stone in my old ass actually exploring my sexuality, which was huuge growing up in a place where anything other than cisgendered heterosexuality was shunned and shamed out of sight.
if there’s an artist or a writer who’s harlivy work speaks to you and they have a kofi or have commissions open, consider throwing some money their way. true queer solidarity comes from supporting each other. Corporations like DC, Warner Brothers, HBO, whatever, are always going to be an enemy. joker 2 coming to theaters near you in 20gofuckyourself.
hope this post ages poorly and the HQ cartoon gets renewed for a million seasons. not plugging my fanfic in this, I just wanted to ramble ❤️🖤💚🍃

So I finally saw Black Panther.....
This being the first movie I see after burying a family member that should not have died is..... a choice. And it hit me HARD during the funeral scene in the beginning: the slow-mo shots of Shuri & Ramonda as they look around hit WAYYY deeper than I was prepared for; like yeah funerals are celebrations of life and as you look around at all these happy-ish people who are celebrating your loved one & yeah it feels nice to be surrounded by love and support but you would rather have your person with you and it just be a regular day. And then as they raised his casket & it stopped for a moment and saluted the crowd..... yeah I was done for. And then it faded straight into the silent, Chadwick-only Marvel logo????? Tears
Do I agree with Ramonda's decision after the bridge situation? No. And her rash, emotions-driven actions ultimately [train horn]
ALSO the fact that nobody believed Okoye after the bridge is weird af. The Elders not believing her bc they weren't there...fine, whatever. But QUEEN RAMONDA not believing her after seeing Namor come out of the water???? And speaking to him???? And hearing him say he had a big ass army (granted he never mentioned they were blue lol)???? Out of character tbh. And that ultimately contributed to [train horn] too
I saw some people saying that the nighttime scenes were too dark. I agree, the scenes on the beach in particular were really hard to see
Namor's little joke to Shuri like "the pressure would kill you almost instantly. Your blood would become poison.......or you could wear a suit. Come on, we have some 😊" *chefs kiss*
Also namor had like two little jokes and they fit in with his humor (from the comics) & his character so well 😭
I love that this movie wasn't overly comedic? Yeah there were jokes (mainly from Riri) but it fit within the context of the movie and the plot & it didn't feel like the script took a detour just to tell a joke where there didn't need to be one (looks at the Thor movies)
I also saw some people say that the slow-mo was a little heavy handed; I also agree. We don't need it every time a waterbomb explodes lol
Namor punching M'Baku into 2135 then going about his business was funny tbh
I would love to rewatch this movie in a crowded theater to hear audience reactions bc the two people next to me were WILD lmao
Somebody in the balcony of my theater yelled "I KNEW IT" when some info was revealed during the mid credit scene
I would've opted to stay with namor immediately. Not only because he's fine as hell, but because I too carry rage everywhere with me & I always have time to burn everything to the ground
Namora was setting little fires with Namor's emotional ass & I loved it
The suits Shuri built look like Sonic/blue Knuckles. That's all I saw 🤷🏾‍♀️
I have a feeling Tenoch has a thing for being on his back at a woman's feet bc this isn't the first time we've seen him like this 👀👀👀
Some people said the CGI was a little dodgy? I agree & it was only dodgy in the deep-dive suit & the ships which is wild bc those types of shots have been done so many times in the MCU?? Why did they struggle with it?
Alex Livinalli is *chefs kiss*
Mabel Cadena? Hot, gorgeous, stunning, amazing, incredible, outstanding, talented, never been done before, we love her
The two white people in this movie were largely unnecessary..... especially that white woman. And I have a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't Ryan's idea to include them 🤷🏾‍♀️
Everyone in this move (except the two white people bc they shouldn't have been there) deserves an Oscar IMMEDIATELY bc they were ACTING THEIR ASSES OFF LIKE RENT WAS DUE
I hate to say it but I forgot Nakia was even in the movie until she popped up 😭😭😭
All in all, this was a 10/10 movie for me I will absolutely be seeing it again (hopefully in a more full theater bc there were like 10 of us in mine) and I will be streaming when it drops on Disney+

Chris Pine on Don't Worry Darling and "spitgate" in Venice for Esquire, 1 March 2023:
"When he’s alone in the sauna, Pine will stretch or listen to a podcast, but because I’m here, we talk about his last big moment out in the world: the seemingly quite nutso Don’t Worry Darling press tour, consumed soap-operatically by a diversion-craving populace when the film premiered in Venice last September. “If there was drama, there was drama,” Pine says of the shoot, but for the record, “I absolutely didn’t know about it, nor really would I have cared. If I feel badly, it’s because the vitriol that the movie got was absolutely out of proportion with what was onscreen. Venice was normal things getting swept up in a narrative that people wanted to make, compounded by the metastasizing that can happen in the Twittersphere. It was ridiculous.” He speaks well of Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles (“a sweet guy”), loves Florence Pugh—whom he first worked with in 2018’s Outlaw King—“to fucking death,” and maintains that nobody spat on anybody in Venice.
And those photos of Pine spacing out during that Venice press conference, the ones people turned into memes imagining him rethinking his every life choice, trying to astral-project his consciousness away from the torture chamber of the Darling promo cycle? “All the memes I saw about my face in Venice made me fucking laugh,” he says, especially the one captioned “me on an important zoom call watching my cat throw up on the sofa.” But he swears all he was doing was admiring the ceiling of the Palazzo del Casinò, jet-laggedly. “Sometimes the question’s not that interesting,” he says, “and you just fucking zone out, and you’re looking at a ceiling because it’s really pretty.”
The runaway narrative around Darling meant nobody talked about Pine’s magnetically unpleasant turn as a midcentury-modern cult leader, recasting his natural charisma as something toxic and threatening for a movie about retrogressive masculinity. It’s the latest of many Chris Pine films in which he simultaneously embodies and interrogates an old-school idea of movie manliness, squaring the past with the values of the present.
It was the waning days of summer and the Venice Film Festival was in full swing. The warm sun was setting on a perfect Italian evening, and the cast of Don't Worry Darling was finally premiering their anticipated film. After months of rumors—cast feuds!, "Miss Flo!", Harry and Olivia!—the Aperol spritz was flowing and things were looking up. And then, Harry Styles entered the same row in the theater as Chris Pine, leaned down towards his costar as he edged toward his seat and...did he just hock a loogie at Captain Kirk???? The Internet erupted.
Now, many months removed, Chris Pine sat down with Esquire—check out our March 2023 cover story—and gave us the lowdown on what really happened in that moment. Did Harry spit on him? Were they feuding? Was it an accidental walk-by spit? Or was it some secret exchange that only celebrities could understand? In our newest episode of Explain This, streaming above, Pine confirms that Harry did not, in any way, spit on him as he passed. He continues, adding, "Harry's a very very kind guy."
But Pine does admit, he sees how the fire spread. "I was on the plane with my publicist, who says I look like Rachel from Friends [with my current hairstyle], we're flying back from Venice. And I'm sleeping, having a great time on the plane. I love planes," he begins. "And she wakes me up, in a, you know, in a state. She says, 'We have to craft a message about what happened in Venice.' And I'm like 'About what?' 'About Harry spitting on you.' Which I have no idea what happened. She showed me the thing. It does look, indeed, like Harry spitting on me. He didn't spit on me."
Turns out, it was just a joke between Styles and Pine that was shared. As Pine says: "I think what he said, is he leaned down, and I think he said, 'It's just words, isn't it?' Because we had this little joke, because we're all jetlagged, we're all trying to answer these questions, and sometimes when you're doing these press things, your brain goes all befuddled, you know, you start speaking gibberish, and we had a joke like, 'It's just words, man.'"
So there you have it. It's just words, man.

Hazbin Hotel Music Ranking
Wooo, ranking time! I'll rank the episodes in a different post lol
Forgive me, I'm gonna use the knowledge that I grabbed from my dropped music minor (aka lots of music nerd talk)
I'm also gonna put out what I think each of these songs were based off of in the context of theater (my opinion, not fact in the slightest)
Happy Day in Hell (7/10)
(Based on all Broadway openers ever)
The "opening number" for the show, and Charlie's "I want" song, I think it's pretty strong. It gives the audience a great way to see the pride ring as well as locations that we are going to see later in the season. The only two things that bring it down for me is the weirdly abrupt time change to a triple meter (from what I can count the song goes from like a 4/4 to what seems like a 6/8) that feels like an unintentional whiplash effect, and the brain lyric seems a bit out of place from the rest of the song. Other than that, solid opener
Hell is Forever (9/10)
(Based on rock musical numbers, such as Fright of Their Lives from Beetlejuice)
I'm not usually a fan of rock style musical numbers, but Alex Brightman's performance knocked this number out of the park. This number also gives a great insight on how not all of Heaven is actually nice, especially in terms of their views on sinners.
Also, when the music drops out and it's just clapping sent chills down my spine, I freakn love when numbers do that
Alex, your Beetlejuice is showing-
Stayed Gone (10/10)
(Based on villain duets and talk singing, such as Master of the House from Les Miserables and Your Fault/Last Midnight from Into The Woods)
My absolute favorite number in the entire first season hands down. Vox and Alastor being petty to the max is my bread and butter. Also, the fact that this number highlights the real world thoughts of radio vs T.V./streaming is so freakn cool (saying this as a mass comm major who deals with both of these lmao).
Alastor's solo at the end is so terrifying, but uuuuugh Amir does such a wonderful job with balancing petty with sheer sadistic evil.
It Starts with Sorry (8/10)
(Based on "apology" numbers, like 'Til Him from The Producers)
This is such a cute number, especially as it's the start of Sir Pentious' redemption arc. I feel like lots of people need to listen to this song.
Respectless (8/10)
(Based on "dueling genres" such as Feed Me/Git It from Little Shop of Horrors)
I love Velvette so much here. The way that she takes control of the situation by carefully observing Carmilla while also being a #bitch was such a clever use of show don't tell. Zestial's little lyric is also smart, and a nice foreshadowing nod to episode 7. Also, I didn't think that Latin-style music mixed with hip-hop/rap would gel so nicely here.
Whatever It Takes (3/10)
(Based on power ballads such as Memory from Cats)
As I alluded to in my deconstruction of transitioning musical numbers post, this is my least favorite musical number by a landslide. I really don't like how loud Zestial's solo is (no shade at James Monroe Iglehart, I think this was the music director's choice and not his own), especially when the context is that this is a private conversation between him, Carmilla, and her daughters. Honestly, the volume becomes a consistant issue when the electric guitar riff comes in and Carmilla becomes super loud. When it's Vaggie's solo, the instrumentation feels so out of place for her as she's singing quietly. When the two come together, Vaggie is completely smothered by how loud Carmilla is singing (doesn't help that Vaggie is singing a high-ish soprano part. Carmilla is belting out the alto part with her chest voice, which is easily overpowering Vaggie belting with her head voice).
I think the kicker to the whole number is that in the context of the show at that point, Vaggie and Carmilla haven't truly met face to face, and we the audience have not known Carmilla long enough to realize that she and Vaggie have a lot in common. I do get that this number is a set up for episode 7 (which we'll get to that in a minute), but we needed just a bit more time to get to know Carmilla on a personal level as well as Vaggie to understand why they both sang this number "together"
I also dislike power ballads, and this one really did not win me over
Poison (10/10)
(Based on pop song "video" numbers, such All You Want to Do from Six)
Man, this song hits deep, especially the ending. This is a really great way of both showing and telling Angel's life before and while at the hotel when he's working for Valentino. The ending hits the hardest with him wanting an out, but he feels like he has no power nor will to leave. It's both a super catching song, and a very deep song when you understand the full context of it.
Loser, Baby (10/10)
(Based on friend number duets and "cheer up" numbers such as You're the Top and Be Like The Bluebird from Anything Goes)
This is my second favorite of the bunch. Husker spitting facts instead of sugar coating Angel's situation is such a true friend thing to do, and like with It Starts with Sorry, more people need to listen to this song. Both Angel and Husk admitting and embracing their faults is so nice to see, especially as they become closer friends after that song.
This song also has so many chromatic intervals that I love so freakn muuuch, Andrew and Sam did so good with writing this one.
Hell's Greatest Dad (9/10)
(Based on "competing" numbers such as Pirelli's Miracle Elixir from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)
The return of petty Alastor duet! With Hell's leader no less! This song's lyrics is really clever with showing that Lucifer- while he means well- doesn't actually know how to speak to his daughter, while Alastor is able to manipulate the situation by showing that he was indeed with the hotel since day one and essentially getting Charlie on his side since her dad has done really nothing aside from letting Charlie go to that meeting with Heaven a while back. The second half of the song really hits with the blood family vs found family argument, and it's a very interesting conflict idea for Charlie.
Devil Went Down to Georgia vs Piano Man made me cackle like a maniac.
When Mimzy interupts, I actually hated it when I first watched it. After rewatching the episode, I freakn love her interruption. That woman just saved the hotel from an all out brawl that was fixing to explode.
More Than Anything (8/10)
(Based on family duets like Happy/Sad from The Addams Family)
I'm kinda topsy-turvy about this song. Like the beginning kinda doesn't do it for me, probably because it is a slow start. When Charlie and Lucifer begin their duet, I almost thought for half a second that the writers were gonna pull a "they thought they were thinking the same thing but they actually don't" trope (I was thinking that Lucifer was thinking that Charlie was going to shut down the hotel after talking to him about his failed attempt, while Charlie was thinking that Lucifer was on board with the hotel idea). I'm super glad that they didn't do this trope at all, and the harmony between the father and daughter is just so nice to hear, gave me chills.
Welcome to Heaven (7/10)
(Based on "cheery" openers, such as Hello from The Book of Mormon)
The companion to Happy Day in Hell, this is more pop/contemporary style than Broadway, which is a nice genre to go against it (you could argue that it's new-age music vs old theater music). The way the music guides us along to how "great" Heaven is compared to Happy Day in Hell's was of showing how Hell can improve was such a nice subtle comparison. It's a cute intro song for Heaven.
You Didn't Know (9/10)
(Based on "realization" numbers like Defying Gravity from Wicked)
Ah, the revelation song. I do love the reprise of Hell is Forever, especially the change in lyrics to reflect what Heaven and Hell really is: shades of grey. I do wish that Emily's realization of the extermination was explored longer, even before the song (like Emily was becoming suspicious of Sera's actions).
Adam and Lute revealing Vaggie to Charlie had such a nice horror chord to it, I just don't like the still they used for Charlie (it looked rather silly to me)
Out for Love (8/10)
(Based on "motivation" numbers such as The More You Ruv Someone from Avenue Q)
The better version of Whatever It Takes, very catchy and has a nice message. Buuuut what still drags it down is that Carmilla and Vaggie's relationship was never built up (especially with Carmilla insinuating that she has met Vaggie before and realized that she's a fallen angel long before Charlie did).
The dropbeat did save this one tho.
Ready for This (10/10)
(Based off of "rally" numbers, such as Sister Suffragette from Mary Poppins)
I love a good rally song, especially since this song was hyped up before the episode was dropped. Charlie's worry that she'll fail her people is nicely sutible, but is prominent throughout the song, even with her brave face.
The musical references to older Broadway shows (mainly Rogers and Hammerstein, the Sherman brothers, Cole Porter, etc) gave my brain a nice scratch that I didn't know I needed.
Alastor and Rosie's duet is by far my favorite part of the song, especially because it's in a minor key to remind us that Alastor still has a sinister motive behind his decisions, with Rosie on board with it.
More Than Anything Reprise (8/10)
(Based on quiet "reprise" numbers, such as Proud of Your Boy Reprise from Aladdin)
Oh thank god, a quiet ballad at last. Ngl, all the ballads up to this point have been rather loud, so it's nice to have a quiet ballad that is also is shared between Charlie and Vaggie. Those harmonies got me to almost cry on the first viewing as Vaggie is reassuring Charlie that everything will be fine, even in the face of angelic death.
Finale (9/10)
(Based on all Broadway finale numbers ever)
Man, what a true Broadway closure. Charlie mourning Sir Pentious' death, Lucifer and the gang comforting her and raising her up by helping her rebuild the hotel, the Vee's trio, Alastor's solo, and the reprise of Happy Day in Hell melds so well.
Alastor's solo especially is so chilling compared to the rest of the upbeat song foreshadowing possibly his fate for later on? But it still doesn't deter the song in the slightest. The melody and the culmination of Happy Day in Hell is a wonderful send off to the first season!
All in all, almost all these song are full blown bangers! I can't wait for season 2's album to see what they do next!

I SAW ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE.
This is my official warning for extreme spoilers because I want to give my full, uncensored thoughts.
However, before getting into all of that, I wanted to say beforehand that this movie is a part one. It ends in a cliffhanger which caught me completely off-guard, and I just want to tell people who haven't seen it yet that this is only the beginning of this particular story. If anyone wants to watch this movie at home when it comes out on video/streaming and just catch the conclusion in theaters (or at least I hope it's the conclusion) because that would be more satisfying to them, I want them to have that ability, and be aware of this.
Okay, now getting into the actual movie, oh my god it was freaking incredible 🥳. I want this movie's art style more than anything. Somehow they improved upon the magnificent, ground-breaking animation style of the first, and made it even better! Gwen's universe has this super cool, almost painterly art style (which is the best way I can describe it) and everyone moves in such a fluid, distinct way.
And speaking of Gwen, I love how the movie opens with her and briefly shows what her relationship was like with her dad and Peter. It makes it all the more sadder knowing what Peter's inevitable fate is. However, the moment Gwen reveals herself as Spider-Woman to her dad is even sadder because despite everything, he's still afraid of her and everything that's happened, and it's absolutely gut-wrenching. I really want to give the girl a hug.
Not only that, but the fact that they used a joke that wasn't even originally going to be in the first movie (the whole bagel joke was just something made off-the-cuff that ended up making it into the final cut because it made everyone laugh so much) and turned the person that said joke happened to into a genuinely tragic character and menacing supervillain is nothing short of massively impressive. I adore the villain in this movie because of how genuinely terrifying he ends up being after being shown in the beginning to seem like just another sad bank robber. By the way, that entire scene is freaking hilarious. And the way that his entire life was "ruined" by Miles and the reactor, so he in turn wants to ruin Miles' life, is so awful, yet one can definitely understand where he's coming from. I can't wait to see what they do with him in part two, and what that final battle's going to be like.
I love how they reintroduced Peter B. Parker, and they gave him a daughter who is the cutest little girl, oh my gosh. The way he's such a proud, excited dad, showing off photos of her on his phone, is the most wholesome thing ever. And his whole heart-to-heart with Miles was really sweet, too. I can't believe meeting Miles is what caused him to want to actually be a father after originally divorcing MJ because he was too afraid to be one 🥺
Miguel is also an interesting character, and this exchange was fascinating:
Gwen: We're supposed to be the good guys!
Miguel: We are the good guys.
I don't want him to become a villain, exactly, but it's clear he's misguided, and I'm sure he'll continue making rash decisions and hunting down Miles in part two. I think his reasoning for wanting to sacrifice one person to save a ton more gave me Infinity War vibes and I'm wondering what they'll do with him next.
Oh yes, and I loved Pavitr Prabhakar, the Indian Spider-Man variant. He was effortlessly talented and also just a genuinely nice guy. I always love it when effortlessly talented people are also genuinely nice. They could've made him a jerk so easily, but they didn't, and I appreciate that.
I also want to praise this movie for the fact that it gave Miles' mother more to do. I adore her speech to Miles about wanting what's best for him, and that there will be people in the future who don't believe in him like his parents do, so he needs to look out for himself and "that little boy". She's such a fun character and a wonderful mother.
This is usually the spot where I'd put any criticisms, but honestly, the only thing I could really say in that regard is because it's a part one, there is definitely a lot of setup. But all in all, I think it's great even on its own, and it leaves you wanting more.
Okay, okay, and the ending. I can't believe a variant of Miles is the Prowler, and I have no idea what that means for the next movie, but I'm so intrigued to find out. God, they really got me, hook, line, and sinker.
There's a lot more I could say about this movie, and I might make another post to add more thoughts that I forgot to add here, but I cannot emphasize enough or put into enough words how much I love it. If you don't mind cliffhangers, go see it in theaters to support it.

tagged by @chiropteracupola a rather long while ago for this ao3 tag game (we are ignoring my play analysis teacher right now so might as well look at my fic writin' stats!)
ao3 name: mxpauling (tho this changes rather frequently!)
fandoms: in terms of fandoms Published On AO3, the greatest number are for detroit: become human and subsequent fan film detroit: evolution, due to my feverish participation in the deartfest fan event summer of 2020 (in which i wrote well over a novel's worth of words in. approximately a month.), but others represented include: team fortress 2 (specifically of the flintlock fortress variety), mystery science theater 3000, spies are forever, hadestown, the true lives of the fabulous killjoys, and some smaller one off fandoms (deathtrap, the moors, goncharov, the wolf and the watchman, and where or when)
number of works: 28! which is. a Lot higher than i remembered it being
work I spent the most time on: fairly certain it's 'leave your body at the door' as it was written over the course of about four months, which for me (guy with formerly wildly unmedicated adhd) was Insane
works I spent the least time on: oof uhhhh i mean i've written Several in the course of just a few hours, like 'cut something, kill something, eat something', 'i can't stand to see you bleed', 'don't give it a hand, offer it a soul', and 'old churchyard', amongst MANY OTHERS THAT ARE OLDER (and i didn't feel like copying)
longest fic: first place goes again to 'leave your body at the door' but coming as a close runner-up is 'Potentially Lovely, Perpetually Human', from way back in the de days
shortest fic: '(i feel) an overwhelming need', my recent the moors character study
most hits: this would be 'Out Of The Blue', due to its featuring in the octopunk monthly roundup at the end of deartfest. turns out, a built in Massive Stream Audience will bring people to your fic
most kudos: once again, 'Out Of The Blue', for much the same reasons
total word count: 144,556???????? (sorry this is NEWS TO ME)
favorite work of my own: a lot of them have already been featured in this list, so i will take this space to spotlight both 'Try Again, Die Again' (i am so proud of the premise) and 'Where the Sun Can't Find Me' (i really liked the prose in this one and am genuinely super pleased rereading it)
fic you want to rewrite / expand on: oof there are Several: i had a halfway plotted third installment of the killjoys: dead zone series about the girl and show pony settling into a new life in batt city that i'd really want to revisit someday; i'd love to restructure and rewrite 'Potentially Lovely, Perpetually Human' to make the pacing a bit more consistent; i have an incomplete fourth fic in the spytown logs series i want to come back to; and for the sake of space and time i want to redo the end of 'Out Of The Blue' because my God it's rushed
share a bit of a wip or story idea you are planning on: changing tacks Entirely. behold my bill & ted fanfiction you cowards
Everything is perfectly, totally sublime, another freakin’ awesome day in San Dimas. And Ted has a seriously heinous problem. “Dude,” he says before his brain really tells him to, turning to Bill, “this day is freakin’ awesome.” Bill nods, smiling most radiantly, pushing his sunglasses up his nose. “Totally awesome.” It is. Today is totally, absolutely, one hundred percent awesome, but… Ted doesn’t feel awesome at all.
this is a fic about ted getting wild depression post excellent adventure and not knowing how to deal with it because uhhhh he does not know what depression Is (and also they kiss a little)

Film RED bullet review below the cut bc of spoilers but also it’s living in my mind rent-free and i gotta holler for a min (though I should preface this with saying i haven’t read wano yet bc I keep procrastinating but If I Don’t See EVERY one piece film in Theaters I WILL Die! Waited 32 years of my life for this and I’ll get my spoilers via the big screen if i have to!)
THAT BEING SAID lmao
the only reason i went to see this film is bc of JINBE it was BABY’S FIRST FILM and he had 8 entire minutes of screentime rip
the COWARDS didn’t dub the songs for some reason???? but Uta’s english VA AmaLee did her own version of Genesis and it’s a FUCKIN BANGER give it a big big listen she deserved to drop the entire album on the big screen!!!!!!!!!!
in spite of that, me and my friend are huge Jpop nerds so this movie felt tailor made for us and we were alone in the theater thank God so we got to be absolute assholes and jam 100/10
Uta’s EXCELLENT Cult Vibes my girl swung so far to the left she curved right back around A for effort
Every song being a little more deranged than the last as her mental health plummeted bc of sleep deprivation / stress MWA we love to see it we love a girl saying Fuck the Government AND the Pirates and streaming her absolute break down live on global television and taking EVERYBODY DOWN WITH HER only bc it is SO FAR REMOVED from Oda’s typical villain trope of Bitter Old Man who wants to destroy the world bc he is Sad Z i am looking you in the face
the Things I Care About and the Things This Film Wanted Me to Care About Divergence was... Incredible! Uta being Shank’s daughter got crickets from me bc ask me why i should care but it was immediately followed by “Strawhat is The 5th Emperor” which received uproarious applause and that was a spoiler for me lmao
Oda/etc Stop Cramming 48 Random and Unnecessary Characters into every Film Just Because They’re High On The Popularity Poll Challenge
We have a full entire cast of STRAWHATS. There are TEN STRAW HAT PIRATES. Would have loved to see a little bit of oh i don’t know Interaction and Shenanigans that lasted longer than a few seconds, i mean jesus christ I remember the older movies always having lots of fun banter and moments with the strawhats and that’s what made them fun to watch, i remember when there were Character Driven plots give me some of that back I come here for the StrawHat Pirates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did i enjoy Trafalguy turning up to babysit his queer platonic BF? Yes!
Did this movie in particular benefit from him being there? NO.
Fleeting Lullaby (song/scene) is Unhinged, Uta i love u
Luffy who recognizes No One Ever spotting that girl he saw like twice when he was 7 from 40 yards away and being like Hey Stop The Show I Think Know Her sklfsjfasd;lk KING
He said he was gonna go take a nap and Uta had a meltdown abt it, say you have Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria without saying it
ALSO Uta sitting in the rain stroking Luffy’s precious sleeping face and crying got me cryin in the club fr
That very quick flashback of shanks thinking abt Roger and Rayleigh also punched me in the chest but I went into the film not caring abt shanks and his daughter and I left the film still not caring i’m sorry lmao
Tumblr media
Usopp’s observation haki connecting him to his dad and them both working to coordinate their respective crews was GODTIER OH WE LOVE TO SEE IT. USOPP THANK U FOR SHINING SO BRIGHTLY
the very quiet scene where Uta gives Luffy his hat back and she’s trying to be silly with him but you Don’t See His Face At All that entire scene so you KNOW he’s upset and something is wrong made me fucking feral I love Luffy’s growth I love his character development I LOVE HIM SFM
Coby was the REAL MVP of the Film
Jinbe deserved more screentime
Rob Lucci struggling to trouble-shoot the Elders TV sent me right into the stratosphere HOW fucking embarrassing sdfljslfksl
Uta fuckin died????????????/ Unconfirmed but implied
Oda Stop Martyring Women Challenge
this movie is GREAT but it’s not Film Gold

Azula Week - Day 6 Band AU
Summary: Azula is in a kpop band and her company controls almost every aspect of her life; especially surrounding dating. Which becomes a problem when she meets Katara.
TW: Referenced Suicide
Azula flops down on the sofa and takes a deep breath. The makeup is growing itchy and this outfit is, though absolutely elegant, completely uncomfortable–too small for one thing. But if there’s anything that sells, it’s something that pushes the boundaries. Something that is just off of being too revealing.
She takes a deep breath, the faux gems glimmer beneath her eyes. She just has to get through one more song.
One more and then she can call it a night.
One more.
That’s what she tells herself.
Always just one more.
And one day, one more is going to be one more than she can take.
The company, the fans, the haters, her family (father and the company are nearly one and the same) alike, they push her in all sorts of ways. In different ways unique to them. But there is some common ground that all of them seem to share; four golden rules;
She must be pretty.
She must be clever and charismatic.
She must be single.
She must be talented.
Sometimes it makes her feel like a doll or a slab of clay–a thing that they can control, mold, and manipulate all while she flashes a charming smile and makes off like her life is nothing but fun and elegant. That’s what the fans want to see.
They don’t want a tired eyed idol with tears streaming down her face. They don’t want drama–not the kind that isn’t showable on TV.
Neither do they want to see her real face. They don’t want to see the few freckles on her cheeks, they don’t want to see her lips without an extra pump of shimmering pink. They don’t want to see her lashes when they aren’t elongated by mascara.
They don’t want a chubby idol either. Her company wouldn’t have her if she was and for it she can no longer eat her favorite treats; her mochi, her lava cakes, and those cookies with the jelly filling and the powdered sugar. They restrict her diet so heavily that she wonders if she’ll ever be able to have a treat again. Even the birthday cakes are for show–she can blow out the candles and sample maybe a forkful but then she has to watch the crew and makeup artists eat it for her.
And, of course, they control her dating life. If she is in a relationship it is all preformative so that any fan can picture themselves with her. Every fan who dreams of having a chance with her–however illusionary it is–is a fan that stays hooked.
And the haters like to gather around waiting for her to break one of these golden rules so that they can tear her apart when she isn’t physically looking her best or mock her when her company finally gets tired of her and moves onto the next big talent. On to a trainee with a fresh new sound or a fresh new look.
And she has to keep smiling and waving as though she isn’t falling apart on the inside. As though father doesn’t have to slip her anxiety pills between sets.
She’s lucky to have that–TyLee doesn’t have that luxury, she has to tough it out.
Yue certainly didn’t have that luxury; hence the scandal that rocked the entire industry for about a month until BlazeBlossom Entertainment announced the first ever theatrical pop show. Something that they promised would blend theater, opera, and idol culture in a riveting new experience.
One that she will be fronting with Mai and TyLee at her side. Supposedly Blue Blaze will be leading the industry as a whole into a brand new, enthralling era. One where Yue’s preventable passing could be forgotten.
They don’t know that she is planning a downfall of her own. That after she makes it through this final chorus, she will be heading off to meet Katara–the one little breath that she has in this suffocating shroud.
.oOo.
“I bought you a little something.” Katara smiles as she passes Azula a little blue box with a swirly, pink lace ribbon.
“Thank you.”
“You haven’t even opened it yet, you don’t know if you’ll like it.”
“A gift is a gift.” Azula shrugs and she needs a pick me up, even if it is a very small one like a new necklace to hide in a shoebox in a closet where father nor the rest of his company can ask her where she got it.
She gives the bow a good tug and it falls away. When she lifts the lid an aroma of caramel and chocolate hits her nose.
“I wasn’t sure what flavor you liked so I got you red velvet. Also I like red velvet truffles and I was hoping that we could maybe split it?”
Azula laughs. “We can split it, sure.” She is just happy to finally have something sugary again.
“I got some forks too.” Katara hands her one. “I guess that that’s kind of a no brainer though.”
Azula nods, already jabbing her fork into the treat. The chocolate bursts on her tongue and she is pretty sure that her eyes have lit up. “Very good.” She comments between bites.
“You’re more excited about this truffle than you were about the new shoes.”
“I get new shoes all the time.” Azula shrugs. “My company won’t let me eat anything that appeals to anyone who has tastebuds.” She just wishes that they could enjoy the treat on a restaurant patio or rooftop instead of an alleyway several buildings down from the concert venue.
She also wishes that they had more time but the fans would be flocking soon and the company would grow suspicious.
So she has to make the most of her time. Of the little drop of freedom that, “I’m going to go for a quick walk and get some fresh air” has afforded her.
She takes Katara’s hand and gives her a quick peck on the lips. And suddenly, Katara’s face falls. Azula’s brows furrow.
“What’s wrong?” She asks.
“I don’t know. I guess it’s just hard having to sneak around and watching you on stage.”
“You don’t like watching me perform?”
“I don’t like watching it knowing that your smile is usually fake and that you’re not really that…perky and upbeat. It feels fake.”
“It is fake.” Azula shrugs. “I’m a pretty good liar. They don’t know that I’m actually cranky and sarcastic and cynical.”  It is supposed to be a joke but Katara doesn’t laugh. Likely because there is too much truth in the joke for it to truly be classed as one. “It’s not all bad.” She tries. “I do enjoy the singing and dancing. Writing the songs and concepts for this new era has been incredible. I feel important.”
“You are important.” Katara replies. “And that’s why I want to make sure you’re okay. I don’t want to lose you like I lost Yue. She was like a sister to me and you…I love you, Azula.”
Azula swallows and taps her fingers upon the gift box. The one that she has to hand back to Katara to avoid discovery. “I love you too, Katara.” She wishes that she could do it better, more openly.
Katara manages a smile. “We’ll figure something out. Even if I have to wait until you retire or something.” She pauses. “Just take care of yourself, okay?”
Azula nods.
“And I’ll try to bring you a treat or two when I come by.”
“Agni, I think that you’re probably one of the last heroes left in this world.” Azula grumbles.
Katara nudges her. “I’ll see you at the next show.”
Azula stuffs her hands into the pockets of her bomber jacket and nods again. “Take care, Katara.”

Yeah I had the same thing. I have gotten into Martyns content recently and damn those 2.
I watched his 3rd life pov for the first time and their friendship took me by suprise. I found out that they had only talked once before so they really hit it off.
I then watched his last life series and yelled when they teamed up again.
I won't spoiler ya for double life!
They really just like to Roleplay together. Like every season they do some Lore together and it's fun to watch.
Like I said to my friend 'Oh Gods the theater kids are at it again...'
I love that the life series brought them together and that they are good friends because of it. They really found a roleplay buddy! They are also just a fun duo/friendship to watch!
I really tought that no friendship could have me in chokehold like Desert duo or Flower Hobbits. I. Was. Wrong.
Sorry for my English, it's not my first language!
ALL OF THIS! YES! The theatre kids - HAH yup. That's literally them. Theatre kids, roleplay buddies, absolute doofuses. They can't help themselves, they have to put Lore into everything lolol.
Also, I don't know if you've ever watched Martyn's reaction to Hermit Gang, but you should absolutely look it up if you haven't. Not only does he just get INTO it the whole time - which is already entertaining to watch - but when Ren's part comes up he gets SO hyped and replays it to listen again. He's like Ren's new hype man and it's AWESOME. (And that one stream where Ren sees Martyn in his chat or something - not long after 3L I think - and he just stops everything to excitedly say hello and "I love ya, man!" and like - dude. I want their friendship. It's pure gold.)
I think I was in the same boat as you with Third Life as well, because I had heard so much about Desert Duo and then I found out about Flower Husbands and I thought it would be Scar and Grian I'd get most attached to. And I did, but not NEARLY as much as the Dogwarts boys. I was so rooting for one of them to win by the end even though I already was spoiled for the finale lol. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(Also thanks for no spoilers for LL and DL lol...I'm trying to catch up before Double Life ends but we'll see how that goes xD)

What made you fall in love with the blakeshaw ship?
Okay, so— This question in particular has a few different answers! Some of which are actual, slightly boring ones and some that are just “I love my little community”. I’ll give both, for fun.
[This is a long post! You can scroll to the bottom for a TL;DR]
So, the “practical” part of my answer is that I’ve always loved many of the dynamics that go into it! Large age gaps, shota, kidnapping/stalking, and Stockholm syndrome (when applicable) to name a few! I had learned about the movie on tiktok (lmao I know— don’t worry about it) by chance one day and thought it sounded interesting. I didn’t get the opportunity to watch it in theaters but with fandom spaces being the way that they are, I was able to put together the general plot of it pretty quickly!
I really liked the relationship between Al and Finney almost instantly. So, one day, I decided to look around and see if there was any ship content of them floating around. I tried Twitter; nothing. Instagram; nothing. Then, I decided to say fuck it and try here. I found a single blog— My now friend’s second (I believe) ever Alfinn blog. Iykyk.
Reading their posts and learning the ship name(s) made me only want to dive deeper. I had just gotten Peacock (which if you didn’t know, the movie is still streaming on there!) and decided that that was the best time to watch it, so I did!
I’ve talked with a few friends about it and we all pretty much agree that the scene where Finney has just woken up and Al brushes his bangs out of his face was the point of no return. That’s what got us hooked. That was the moment.
I watched it live on call with my best friend and I still remember making the comment “This is my ❤️stopper” to her and she just about died of laughter. I wish I could remember what part I had said that about—
At the time, this blog didn’t exist, so I was very scared to interact with any of the other Alfinn blog’s posts. But then, I caught word of a server… and it changed everything.
Again, I only had my freshly made general proship Tumblr (that I still haven’t posted on to this day, fun fact 😂) and it was blank so I was sure the Alfinn person would definitely think I was bait or something like that. I knew about the server for around 4 days before I found the same person’s Twitter that they had just made for the ship.
I have a general proship Twitter. AND I’m super active on it (I like a lot of posts and follow a bunch of people). I knew that it would be my ticket in. I got up the courage to reply to their tweet about the server and within the next hour, I was in.
This is going into my more “I love my community” answer— I have met so many wonderful people there. All of which absolutely adore this ship. I was so nervous to interact and worried that no one would like me. I was wrong.
On our very first movie night, we all watched it together. It was absolutely fucking hilarious, and we had a blast all being horny on main for Al together. (You can only imagine our reactions to the shirtless scene 👀) I think that night really solidified the blossoming love for this ship in my mind. I can’t think of Al and Finney without thinking of my new group of friends as well.
Then, of course, came you guys! I learned a bit more about what happened to the Alfinn blog friend and the terrible things that were said both to and about them. I decided that they shouldn’t have to be all alone here and, on a whim, made my own ship blog for the first time.
Everything else kind of happened naturally. More people were seeing my content and I tried to keep up with posting as often as possible. Now I have 27 of you to chat with! You’re all fucking awesome!! Even if you’re just lurking or you never send in an ask/comment, I’m glad you’re here! The more the merrier. I don’t plan on leaving any time soon lmao ✨
But yeah! A lot of things factored into my love for the ship. I made a bunch of friends because of it and I’m happier now than I have been in a long time. Not to get all mushy, but— I didn’t have many people to talk to before and now I have an entire little community! No one’s judging anyone and we can all just have fun and gush about our silly little ship together. It’s like crawling into bed after a long day of being on your feet. You can finally relax.
TL;DR — Their dynamic is yummy and I’m a sap who loves the friends that I made bc of it 💕

Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 2/20-2/26/2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Navalny (2022, dir. Daniel Roher) An incredible documentary covering the assassination attempt on Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the subsequent investigation done into the Russian state's involvement in it. This was a fantastic and very real look into just how far the Russian government is willing to go to make sure that people currently holding the power stay right where they are, which is probably something we all already knew, but now there is undeniable proof of it. Score: 10/10 Currently streaming on HBO Max.
-Magic Mike (2012, dir. Steven Soderbergh) I was really expecting this one to be way more fun than it was, which was a huge bummer. A lot of the acting was fantastic, from Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer specifically, but I thought Cody Horn, who plays Tatum's main love interest in the film, was incredibly wooden. Where the film really gets a lot of points is that this does look and feel like a Soderbergh film, which really makes for a visually intriguing experience. The scenes where the strip-dances happen are fun and it was interesting to see the objectification of the male body for a change, but all of the film's actual drama and plot fell pretty flat. For a movie about male strippers, it just seemed to take itself too seriously. Score: 6/10 Currently streaming on HBO Max.
-Magic Mike XXL (2015, dir. Gregory Jacobs) This was everything the first one should have been; just an absolute blast from beginning to end. The side characters from the first film (Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez) get to take center stage, and they add an infinite amount of charm that was severely missing from MM1. Their camaraderie is so endearing, and cameos from the likes of Donald Glover, Michael Strahan, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Banks, and Stephen "tWitch" Boss (R.I.P.) are all welcome and so much fun. The only unnecessary part of the whole film was the Zoe character played by Amber Heard. It was a just a way to shove a new lover interest into the film and it wasn't needed in the slightest. The scene in which Manganiello's character performs a strip-dance, high on molly, to the tune of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" in a convenience store to try and get the clerk to smile while the other guys, also stoned out of their minds on molly, cheer him on from outside was worth the entire runtime of the film alone. Score: 8/10 Currently streaming on HBO Max.
-Linoleum (2023, dir. Colin West) This is the first truly phenomenal film of the year. Jim Gaffigan, Rhea Seehorn, Katelyn Nacon, and Gabriel Rush all deliver near perfect performances in this Gondry/Kaufman-esque comedy/drama. I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this one, and it managed to blow my socks off in the best possible way, with a beautiful ending and many wonderful messages and moments throughout. I could consider this a 2022 film, as it premiered at SXSW almost a year ago, and I'm pretty sure it would make my Top 10, but as it didn't see a non-festival limited theatrical release until almost three months into the new year, I'm going to go ahead and consider it for 2023. The bar has been set, and it has been set high. Score: 10/10 Only in theaters on a limited release. Check your local listings to see if there any showtimes near you. FULL REVIEW FOR THIS ONE COMING SOMETIME TOMORROW.
-Old School (2003, dir. Todd Phillips) Before The Hangover, Todd Phillips delivered unto the world Old School, a film which has mostly been remembered for Will Ferrel's ass accompanied with the line "We're going streaking!" Which, to be honest, isn't even kind of the funniest thing in the film and it happens less than 30 minutes in. As is the case with most Todd Phillips films, as well as most comedies in general from the early aughts, there are large aspects of it that have not aged well at all. However, a good chunk of the film is still incredibly funny and reminiscent of the humor that would later make The Hangover such a beloved classic. I admit I had a lot of fun watching this one, and while it wouldn't ever be my first choice for a comedy film recommendation, it is one worth checking out should you be interested in watching it. Score: 7/10 Currently available for rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on DVD & Blu-ray through Paramount Pictures.

The Impact of Horror in My Life
by Dakota M.
Finding comfort in the items around oneself is rather common. Some individuals have blankets, songs, stuffed animals, toys, and etc. Even I myself have an orange fat tabby cat stuffed animal named Pumpkin. I could possibly always listen to music, but it did not bring me as much comfort as other forms of entertainment. Toys? Sure, as a kid, I remember having these My Little Pet Shop animals that I loved. Blankets? Absolutely, I love the comfort of a soft blanket. However, nothing comforted me more than the genre of Horror.
Horror a genre of jump scares, suspense, and gore. Yet even as a little girl I found comfort in all three of those staples of the genre. The creepy has always given me a sense of self. I remember the times I would wake up early around the Halloween season to watch Goosebumps by R.L. Stine on Cartoon Network from Elementary school into Junior High. The main title song rings a sense of nostalgia deep inside. A sense of home reached for me out of the pages of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. I found this home within the collected stories over the decades.
I could place memories of watching Killer Klowns from Outerspace with my Dad and Nana at the Holiday Twin Drive-In located in Fort Collins, CO. Always going the concession stand grabbing popcorn, drinks, and some candy. We also brought a meal from KFC so that we ate dinner while waiting for the sky to go dark. At this exact drive-in I have watched: Beetlejuice, War of the Worlds, Zombieland, The Addams Family, The Night of the Living Dead, Halloween, and more. This has been constant in my life, and a thing I take pride in even.
In high school I wrote reports on many horror-based subjects. For psychology it was about real serial killers, for art it was about capturing the horror in everyday photography, and for English it was all about writing my own stories for the genre. High school marked an era for my life where I began to cosplay. Creepy anime was big for me to cosplay at that point. Death Note, Soul Eater, and High School of the Dead. I got to see my comfort range across all forms of entertainment.
Getting into my adult years I began to cosplay from Resident Evil, Halloween 1978, Scream 1996, The Bride of Chucky, Dead by Daylight, and many other titles. Core memories made with the horror genre, the spooky stories, ghost tales, and the macabre. I began watching horror shows as well. One held a special place in my heart though. I watched Stranger Things season 1 the day it first came out. Love at first dice roll, so to speak. Relatability for bullied and downtrodden, plus the music was a bop. At this point I was trying to do college work, work, and still find myself.
Finding myself came through events that shook my life. A little after a few of those events COVID-19 hit. I found myself losing my mind in the solitude of the lock down. No horror movies at the theaters with friends and family, no boardgames, no cosplay events, and almost no outside time. I spoke with my best friends, and we came up with an idea. I should stream on Twitch. WitchyBunBun was born. This felt like me.
WitchyBunBun a stream name for a horror fanatic, who also happens to be into magical practices perfect. The channel theme is two important things in my life: Stranger Things and Horror. My comfort in the horror genre, the macabre, the creepy, and some D&D 80s horror show got to shine for all. Horror not only was my childhood comfort, but it also became my everyday comfort. Becoming a part of my everyday life, and dreams for careers. I have made a name for myself from the memories I shared with my Nana and Dad.

Post Geography Is Here: Bubble Wrap vs Cells
By RnD
We got interviewed by the New York Times recently. One of the first problems that Wendy Lee brought up was that she was talking to colleagues and many of them had noticed that they couldn’t find live streamed performances any more. All of the places where they would normally be looking for shows the streaming options had dried up. Now they were on the search again looking for accessible options and this quest is what brought Wendy to our Zoom screen. The saddest thing is that we are asked this question way too many times. If you asked us what our most frequently asked questions are “Where can I find Digital Theatre” is right behind “What is Digital Theatre”. We try not to let it get to us. In fact it is proof that one of our biggest predictions is coming true. We predicted that with Digital Theatre we would get something called Post-Geography. What is it, why is it here, and why are questions like this a frustrating sign of their existence? Let’s take a walk.
Tumblr media
Post-Geography is a handy term that we created when we started describing how changes in technology and media have changed the theatre world. The idea is simple: because of how social media and technology has kept artists connected all across the globe they don’t have to make communities based on physical location. Groups of creators can create their own little communities based on interests and needs, not a centralized location. We have seen artist communities and shows based in two different continents, two coasts, and all over the world. We imagine a future where the arts aren’t centered around big cities or hubs. An artist can choose where they want to live and plug in to a global community of makers. These smaller cells of 2-10 makers create the new frontier of the theatre industry. This boils down to “live locally. Act globally. Work in both.” However while we are glad to be seeing a lot of this come true with every show we watch we are finding an aggravating side effect. Along with cells we are getting bubbles and we are so tired of popping them.
Some people think that we have just popped up into their lives by sheer magic. That is a privilege that we didn’t have. We have gotten where we are through sheer stubbornness. We have knocked on countless doors that did not want us. Whenever we just so happen to show up on someone’s radar it’s because we had to pop their bubble. There is no harder bubble to pop than that of indie theatre artists. We’ve noticed time and time again when we want to shout out the work of indie artists or companies that there are so many hoops that we have to go through. There are so many questions to ask, myths to debunk, and back and forth narratives. It’s almost as if they’re terrified of us. We’re not just here to critique like normal theatre critics. We want to turn this bubble into a cell and let the world know what amazing art and artists are out there. We are digital theatre advocates, we believe in this. We know it’s not perfect, in fact It’s as beautifully imperfect as the people who make it. However there is so much potential. So much room for growth and innovation. Then we finally tap into this group of theatre artists and preach the dark gospel of digital theatre to them. Guess what happens next? It’s back to the road to find more bubbles to pop. As much as popping bubble wrap is fun, it can get so old after a while. As tiring as it gets there is an alternative we like the least.
One of the cells that have become absolutely easy to break into are the larger more established theater companies. You know the ones that have massive support systems and infrastructure from before the pandemic? Those have become some of the easiest doors to knock on. Amsterdam, London, New York, Sacramento? They ask very little of us and we get a ticket link. A theatre company is a cell of artists that can connect to much bigger hubs of cells like “National New Play Network”, “LORT”, SETC, etc. We are happy that they are doing digital theatre, we are happy that they are opening themselves up. What scares us is that openness might be coming from a place of security. There is a lot of unholy terror that indie artists have to contend with every day that a more established company with a budget and a building don’t have to contend with. We talked about the flexibility indie groups have to try new things but there is a certain security knowing that one bad show isn’t going to financially ruin you. It leads to the question: Is their openness coming from a place of privilege? Is the indie stage’s guarded stance coming from a place of fear? Or is post-geography still so new that so many isolated bubbles of artists still can’t look to the outside world and see that it has changed.
Every time we talk about digital theatre not being dead we get pushback from the people creating it! They may feel like we are rehashing old territory of fighting battles that have already been won. What they don’t realize is that they can only see what’s in their bubble and we are in that bubble with them now. They don’t see all the questions and the push back that we are getting. A lot of it being so similar it’s like Groundhog Day. So we decided to reach out to everyone at once.
Tumblr media
What are the obstacles getting in your way to find your own communities? What is in the way of you creating more digital theatre or creating the style of show that you want to create? What working definitions are you coming up with to help you get through this? What do you need from us to help you succeed?
We can connect you with someone who wants to help you make art. There are more of us than people realize. You’re not alone so please don’t shut people out. We don’t think we have all the answers. We don’t. We want to understand as much as we can but we would never frame ourselves as the ultimate experts. We are just one resource among many. What we do have is knowledge, access, and a ton of questions we explore daily. We try to stay as plugged in as possible. So please reach out to us so that we can try to expand your horizons as much as possible.
