The Black Bear of Stormbearer Mountains

Genshin Monstadt Characters X Strong! Knight!Reader

SFW. Has nothing to do with smut. The reader is just intimidating and takes the lead in most things. Kind of like a Ned Stark character. I wanted to do something with a more dominant reader since most of the reader content posts have the reader be submissive or passive to whatever the character does. Idk what im doing. First time writing. There are some descriptions I made for reader being tall and buff, the armor they wear and hair length but otherwise I leave it blank. Also don’t @ me I know I’m a simp for Diluc.

First time writing for these characters. I did my best to make then not OOC but sorry if it seems that way.

The reader is a captain in the knight of Favonius similar status to Eula and Kaeya. They have their own squad that’s located in, you guessed it, Stormbearer Mountains. You're in charge with maintaining the watchtowers and keeping a look out for harsh storms. You're squad is a recent creation, an idea by Grandmaster Varka before the expedition, he knew you were from Stormbearer Mountains and knew the place better than anyone. He left you with the job to keep the monsters away from the watchtowers and remain vigilant for storms. Though in secret, he warned you to keep eye for any strange things that catch your eye out in sea. You always wondered what he meant but you've never seen him so serious and grim so you agreed. There must be a threat he was expecting. Taking up your broadsword you rounded up your troops and headed the thundering mountains. They were all picked out based on how well they could survive and tolerate the harsh weather there. Under your leadership they were a tight-knit yet formidable bunch. Not the typical attitudes for free-spirited Monstadters but living in a place like the mountains its necessary.

With your presence and hardwork, Stormbearer Mountains was now safer than before. Sure, it was still storming all the time but there were little to no chances to come by a hillichurl or a raid by bandits. None of that usual incompetence by the knights were found in your company. You were already spoken of pretty highly while just a knight back in Monstadt, your talents and strengths surpassing most. You even got a vision during your knighthood ceremony, quite the spectacle. After patrolling around Stormbearer Mountains, people saw it safe enough to start building settlements there. Like Springvale, there’s a budding town amongst those tall mountains people once thought formidable. But its residents always felt safe when the Captain of the Stormwatch Company patrolled the area. You're achievements and prowess in battle got you the title "The Black Bear of Stormbearer Mointains". 

You got this specific nickname because during one of your patrols, you had stumbled across a bear cub a couple of feet from a slain black bear, presumably their mother. They were injured, so out of the kindness of your heart you helped nurse them back to health. You tried to set it back out into the wild but they would always come back to you. Eventually, you let them stick around during patrols. The bear cub grew in size over the years until they were bigger than most bears of their species. Allowing you to ride on their back even. (You don't know why they developed so large, maybe they were being exposed to elemental energy?) Anyways, it was a common sight to see a large bear following you around. It was scary at first but people got used to them and since they were so docile when not in battle even the children were happy to play with them. People would compare you being so alike with that bear. You were known to be exceedingly tall and broad shouldered. It matched well with your stone faced look and rather intimidating presence, people whispered about how soul piercing your stare was. Your long wild hair was as dark as the bear's fur and you were as dangerous as one. Seemingly peaceful and unbothered until danger was near you become a force as scary as a charging grizzly bear. Hence, the title.

When you return to the city, it's always causes a ruckus. People want a glimpse of the famed Black Bear knight. You were quite the sight entering the city gates riding a bear. People gave you a wide birth. You had stopped using a steed long ago due to your heavy full body armor, when paired with your size, weighed down on a regular horse. You bear companion could carry you easily and still run as fast. You didn't mind the whispers and stares, some pointing out the new scar on your face. Continuing until you arrived to the knights of Favonous headquarters for the usual meeting.

On the way there you meet...

Kaeya

“Well if it isn’t the fabled Black Bear of Stormbearer Mountains. Ever the intimidating sight I see.”

Always one to tease and get under people’s skin, the Calvary Captain saunters up to you with zero fear unlike others. Intent with getting you to crack your stoic face.

But your self-confidence was solid as stone. There was nothing he said that could get you to fluster. Only perhaps be slightly exasperated at his tricks.

You weren’t broody unlike a certain bartender but actually polite and welcoming to be around, if one gets past the intimidation, you made for good conversation. If only he could get one over you.

He would always take the chance to admire your form. There you were, towering over him, majestic in that silver armor and long wild hair. In some ways you seem feral as Razor but it was kept back by experience and discipline. 

Once you had picked him up by the waist. (”Do I even weight anything to you?” “No. Its like holding a couple of grapes.”) Just to move him when he wasn’t budging. He was SO taken aback, he doesn’t remember what he managed to stutter out but it probably wasn’t smooth.

In the end, you’re the one who kept making him lose his cool. One trait about you was your bluntness. It didn’t help in certain diplomatic situations. But it made you do things like stating out loud how lovely you thought his eyes were, as bright as the stars you rarely see in your storm-filled home. 

He ended up having to retreat, face feeling warm and remembering your words for the rest of the week. The tavern goers would wonder why he was staring into his drink so much instead of drinking like usual.

Shy Kaeya guys it just hits diff

Your competence and leadership would be your best trait in his case. Having dealt with other people’s messes so much, he appreciates the tight ship you run. Leaving almost no room for error. No wonder people in Stormbearer Mountains felt safe.

He would somehow, unsurprisingly, find a way to be in Stormbearer to see you in action. The rumors weren’t exaggerated. Seeing you fight was a sight to behold. Standing menacingly with your form casted in the shadow of the bear right behind you standing on its hind feet looking a lot less like the lazy bear it was around people. 

While he was quick to be interested in knowing more about how you tick, finding ways to run into you, it led to you being interested too. Running your eyes over his lithe form.

“Oh, why are you staring at me so much? Did my good looks charm you?” He prodded, smirking at you. Your face held a genuine thoughtful expression as you gazed at him before speaking. “Yes, you’re quite lovely. I like your company.”

He nearly choked.

Diluc

“Ah, hello Captain Y/N. How is Stormbearer these days?”

One of the few knights he likes. You were actually competent and the people directly under you were as well. Anyone who visited Stormbearer Mountains could see how well-protected it was.

You didn’t waste time or sweep things away. Instead, being direct and steadfast in your duty. 

During his Darknight duties, he noticed a significant drop in crime when you came to the city. Your reputation scaring away most of the troublemakers until you left. 

Fed your bear grapes or other fruit, they like him now. Would approach him whenever they saw him, sniffing around for more snacks. Forcing you to leave whatever you were doing to scold them for bothering Master Diluc. He wasn’t bothered, having an animal companion himself, being rather fond of the sneaky bear. 

The bear is an unknowing (or knowing?) wingman bc your personalities wouldn’t have allowed you to approach each other and talk. While he wasn’t much for chit-chat he took the time to express his thanks for the large boom in produce being charted out of Stormbearer that the Winery uses and the ease carriages now have in transferring them bc of your protection.

You had known of Master Diluc during his years as a knight. While you kept to yourself, your eyes would always follow the sight of scarlet red hair. The color was beautiful. Like the owner himself.

You were rarely seen at the tavern but the other knights would keep inviting you to have a drink once you arrive in the city for a meeting with the Acting Grandmaster. He got the chance to observe you.

You didn’t drink too much, letting others do most of the talking but when you did speak people would always listen. It was a rare sight to see you without your full armor, instead wearing a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to your elbows and a pair of black trousers. 

He saw all the scars accumulated on your skin. On your exposed arms, collar, neck and face. It never got boring when observing you. When you caught him staring he looked away, pretending to just clean one of the glass cups. He wasn’t aware you allowed yourself a drink at the tavern after hearing he was the bartender.

You would always stay until closing time, making sure the rest of the knights didn’t get too rowdy and got them out the door without fuss. In gratitude, he would give you a free drink as you sit by the counter. You were much better company, never getting on his nerve or trying to get out of paying your tab. 

You rather sit and drink in piece, the atmosphere around you pleasant. It actually got him willing to talk. Your conversations would be rather thoughtful and deep as the night goes. He ended up forgetting for a bit to close the tavern.

He would walk you home afterwards. He knew you were able to take care of yourself but he was still a gentleman (and he wanted more time around you). Talk was sparse but he was too busy admiring the moonlight that bounced off your form.

You were in the same case but bolder. Glancing at the strands of soft hair, pale skin, and sweet doe eyes. You were probably one of the only people who thought he was adorable rather than grumpy or scary.

Something bubbled in your chest at the sight. “Sorry I must be keeping you out being here.” He said, having forgotten the time during your conversation. “No, thank you for keeping me company.” In a bold move, you take his hand and kiss it. Perfect. Like a knight. “And you are always welcome in my presence.”

Bruh went home red as his hair. You found you would like this to happen more.

Jean

First off, thank you for being so competent she doesn’t have to overwork herself again. 

You two didn’t interact much since Jean was busy in Mondstadt and you had your duties in Stormbearer. But you always made your usual reporting back in Favonius Headquarters. 

Every time you worry for Jean but not voicing it out loud or plainly since you weren’t close. But you manage to praise her at how easier getting support was for the storm watch thanks to her. 

While you did admire her for being so hardworking, you kind of found some of it unnecessary. Helping find a missing cat? Marjorie should know better than to bother the head of the knights for this and Jean wasn’t helping.

You were sure she wasn’t a push over. You saw how she dealt with the Fatui. But perhaps she saw helping everyone as her job when it shouldn’t. You were a leader and believed in helping people, yes but some jobs should be delegated to others to make time for important things. Like taking a breather.

The way you saw it, Jean was being too hard on herself. There was an inherent problem with the knights in Mondstadt but working hard isn’t the same as addressing the core issue here. It was why your team of knights were doing so well. You didn’t compensate for them, you made sure they were excelling on their own. (can you tell I have some feelings on the knights and Jean?)

When she ends up fainting from exhaustion you drew the line. Without hesitating, you picked her up and carried her to the Church to be taken care of by Barbara. Making sure the other knights wouldn’t cause a ruckus. 

You stayed until she woke up. Waving off her apologies you handed her a glass of water and some peeled fruit, saying she needed it. She was flustered, remembering bits of being carried in your arms as she went in and out of consciousness. 

It was there you had a soft but serious conversation about her work ethic and the whole system being unsustainable. You weren’t as close to her but that helped further the message as you looked at everything objectively and put things bluntly, some would say rather harsh. She couldn’t refute a lot of the points you made. 

She wouldn’t immediately start acting differently but she would look into bettering the knights and finding time off. A lot of her friends were thankful you got through to her. 

Since you were sure your company could manage itself fine without you for a while, you would take some time to visit the city and see how she was doing. Noting the changes made. She would invite you to spend her break with her at Vanessa’s tree, becoming friends at that point.

Lisa embarrassed her once saying Jean had really missed you when you left. Jean was quick to head her off. You thought the blush she sported was lovely. Probably sneaked a glance as she walked away good lord Barbatos those pants, RESPECTFULLY ofc

She once stated how you would make for a great Acting Grandmaster, seeing your accomplishments and company’s capability. You rejected the thought, saying you weren’t nearly as approachable as she was. People wanted someone they felt they could talk to and raise morale, you were an intimidating figure.

She reassured you that your presence was comforting. “I doubt there’s anybody who doesn’t feel safe around the Black Bear Knight.” You smiled back, admiring her surrounded by crystal flies. “The day surely feels brighter when you’re around Jean.”

Albedo

You were hard to miss. Towering over most people in your gleaming armor and strong presence. The bear that followed you didn't help.

He's sketched everyone at some point. He's always missed the chance with you since duties kept you away. But he did find the opportunity. Sketching you, he found, was fun. From your impressive form and the rare smiles. There was one of you riding your bear, cape billowing behind in the wind, face stern. One where you were just standing straight, sword out in the courtyard. Another where it was just you relaxed, without your armor, a rare sight he found.

Watching you became a fond past time. He gave you one of his drawings like he always did but kept the others. Like everyone else you weren't expecting it but thanked him nonethless. He would soon fill pages of you in his sketchbook.

Another point of interest was your companion. The bear was obviously special somehow and he asked to run some tests to figure out why. You were wary for your longtime friend but accepted when he reassured you the bear wouldn't be harmed. As long as he informed you of how the bear was doing healthwise. (not like you knew any zoologists around) Now came the shenanigans of lazy bear and head alchemist.

Klee inevitably found out. Her excitement seeing your bear was adorable. She immediately wanted to pet it. Albedo reminded her to ask you first. She was so sweet about it, you told her you friend was a lazy bear and have her an apple so he would be interested. True to your word, they got off thier bum and took the offered apple, letting the girl run her hands in their fur. She exclaimed how soft it felt.

At the end of the day the two were best friends. Granted you knew it was because she would give him snacks. Your bear was having a great time, doing mundande things and recieving food for it. It was a nice day off at least. You could even listen to what Albedo theorised.

There was a day where Klee and the bear went off on their own. You knew the bear was smart enough to subtly keep Klee out of trouble. At least Jean didn't have to worry about a forest fire starting again with bear there ("Only you can stop forest fires Klee" "Mr. Bear?!) They went fish blasting. While bear didnt like the loud noises, he got a lot of fish from it.

With those two off on their adventures, you hung around Albedo. His rambles were cute. When you were explaining how you found a bear cub the conversation led to a retrospective about you. How people saw you as the Black Bear Knight, the association and your compassions to save the cub. He theorised poetically that the bear might have formed a bond with you that linked the two of you somehow. Explaining how abnormally large he was.

You were pleased at the genuine compliment. It was not something people usually said about you. Instead focusing on your strength and titles.

As you stayed at his lab you came across papers. They were sketches of landscapes and peoples. It was so detailed you had to sift through them. He gave you permission once you asked, still focusing on a chalkboard with some notes. You saw some familiar faces like Huffman and places like Windrise. Then you came across ones of yourself. The more you went through the pile, the more you saw there was a lot of drawings on you. With increasing detail.

You remarked that his drawings of you were lovely. You were honored a great artist like him thought you were a worthy subject to draw. Looking up you noticed a surprised look. You wondered if be even realized he was giving permission to look through his drawings while he was so distracted. He admitted he would forget about time while sketching you.

Short boi tried to get something from the top shelf. Seeing him unable to reach it you stepped in and got it for him. The two of you were closer than ever as you handed it over. Your front an inch from his back. He realized you had to bend a little forward to give it. The size difference was very obvious, and he felt something he couldn't explain.

Curious about all things human, he wanted to see what this feeling was. "Looks like those two are back. They let Klee ride their back too. How cute. She'll be riding to battle on him soon enough." you said. "Y/N don't say something so foreboding."

This is my first actual post on Tumblr ever so pls bear with me. Also, English is not my first language so pls excuse any mistakes I make :)

So, this whole thing here started just as a joke bc I was curious if anyone else was feeling constantly tired all day no matter how long I sleep. But it all somehow escalated a bit and I may have started hyperfixating on it so well, now it actually became a little survey.

I also wanted to mention that I only asked the artist in my little Tumblr bubble, which is mostly tmnt content, so my results are mostly referring to tmnt artists.

In total, I asked 143 people if they could remember the last time they woke up and just felt actually rested for more than half of the day.

I probably could have been more specific with my question but again, I did not actually planned to let it become so big. Personally, for me being rested means, having a clear head, no headache or foggy mind without consuming any caffeine.

So out of 143 people, 100 answered me and I tried my best to sort all of the answers after the criteria “good-sleep-schedule” and “bad-sleep-schedule” and also noted when exactly they last felt actually rested into either the last days, weeks, months, years or “???” when they couldn’t remember or didn’t mention anything specific.

And let’s just say… it does not really look good. Out of 100 people, only 18 have an actual good sleep schedule. Out of these 18 people, 13 felt really rested in the last days, 2 in the last weeks, only one person in the last months and 2 in the last years.

Out of the 82 of people who have a bad sleep schedule, 10% lastly felt rested in the last days, 11% in the last weeks, 11% in the last months, 30% in the last years, and 38% couldn’t remember or didn’t specify it.

While reading all your answers I came to realize being sleep deprived is not just bc any of them thought “Oh it would be really neat to stay up till 4 am!” or smth like that.

A lot of the artists who answered me mentioned that they have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep due to stuff like insomnia, chronic pain, other issues, or children (yeah, ok, there was just one who had a child but still).

While analyzing I mostly referred the situations to my own experience with going to sleep or rather not going to sleep...

I usually don’t have problems falling asleep but trouble actually putting my stuff away and going to bed bc I don’t want to end the day or just don’t want to go to sleep (don’t ask why, I have no idea why I am like this). While having these “episodes” I often doodle smth, binge reading some fanfics, or watch whatever I can find on the internet until I’m just falling asleep or can convince myself that it is 3 am and I really should go to bed now.

So, my personal theory about why sleep deprivation is so common among Tumblr artists is not bc they do art all night. My theory is that a lot of people who have trouble falling asleep due to insomnia, pain, or other issues are filling the time until they hopefully fall asleep with their art, doodles, writings, or whatever their creative minds can bring up, to help the time pass.

In total that would mean that not all artists are sleep deprived but more that a lot of people who have trouble falling asleep do a lot of art or creative stuff in general.

Something I could also imagine is, that if they start doing art while waiting for sleep, they start to concentrate a lot on creating more and start procrastinating sleep even if they actually get tired bc they wanna do art and fuck up their non-existing sleep schedule even more but that could also just be me projecting here.

I know that is probably no kind of big revelation but for me it was kind of surprising to see how many people here are as sleep deprived as me and due to what reasons.

I’m not going to preach to any of you to get that problem solved or smth, I have no right to tell you what to do and would be a major hypocrite so instead I really which everyone to get some kind of good sleep schedule one day and the joy of waking up and feeling completely rested at least thrice per week.

2024 Prep + Plan ✨

when going into the new year, there are so many different feelings about this time. Whether you've had one of the best years of your life, or whether you're still in your cocoon phase of becoming a butterfly. This reset routine will set you up for the year you deserve, you're allowed to feel however you need to feel about the upcoming new year but for me, this year screams hope, creativity and becoming the best possible version of me.

Deep clean your space both physical + mental - Change + create a rotation for bedsheets + towels. - Clean floor + surfaces in your room / apartment. - Journal: Reflect on what went well and what you accomplished, things to do, events, goals, ideas. - Spend the weekend before Monday 1st to get the last of the errands done for the year. - Clean out your closet Hygiene reset - Create the simplest skincare that works for you - for me all my skin really needs is a good cleanser and an even better moisturiser - Eyebrows - either get them done or do them yourself - Nails - either get them done or do them yourself - i have some perfect clean girl nail aesthetics - Hair - I love oiling + putting a hair mask every sunday that i can - Wash makeup brushes - i am a victim of procrastination + i cannot remember the last time i washed my brushes - HAVE AN EVERYTHING SHOWER - they're healing. I dunno what it means but I have a theory

Pessimists say JK is copying/stealing Jimin's style because he has no creativity of his own and he knows Jimin's look was successful.

Pragmatists say the stylists recycle looks and design brands for BTS, especially when the members have a similar sense of style or body build, and they are pressed for time with all these rollouts.

Optimists like me say JK has a say in a lot of his outfits and poses, so he might wish to draw visual connections to Jimin, creating an unspoken alignment. It may not even be entirely conscious, and it definitely doesn't connect the "themes" of their solo works.

I guess we won't know unless they ever talk about it, but at this point, there's too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.

The reason I cannot bring myself to believe that Jungkook is just copying Jimin out of intellectual laziness is because THEY DO THIS IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES ALL THE TIME. All the shoes, pants, shirts, hats, and jewelry brands and looks they've shared over the years?? They like the same stuff.

They take the whole "I am you, you are me" thing pretty seriously, and as much as Jimin teases Jungkook for being hyung's copycat, he has never truly minded. In fact we've had proof of them recently hanging out and being just fine with one another. Whatever their status is, Jikook seem pretty good, which is heartening.

So maybe I'm looking at the world through rose-colored glasses (and I'm not out to convince anyone to see things my way), but I just get the gut sense that JK craves connection with Jimin and this is one of the ways he can do that... Or maybe he just thinks Jimin is the coolest (I cannot argue with the man).

Even if he didn't write his own songs or craft his own designs in solo era (something I personally lament--I am really struggling to connect with his work so far, I'm sad to say, but that's a comment on me, not a demand of him), staff know what he likes; he approves things and has right of refusal.

So I just tend to think it may not be a big huge hairy deal (as in, this is not couple coding; this is not proof that "Jikook is real"). Rather, I take it to mean Jikook share aesthetics and this is one of the ways they click. At work. At home. While traveling. They click this way.

It's cool if you see things differently. I could be way, way off base! But as a general rule, if you bash a member of BTS on my blog you get the ban-hammer from me without any fuss or fanfare.

Day 15: The Principles of Mindful Productivity  

Since starting my career journey, I have been focused on being productive and focusing on how to get the most out of my productivity habits at work and in my personal life. Still, like most people, I've been doing it rather unsustainable. The long hours, always being on the go, and pushing out as much output as possible, have led to burnout multiple times. When starting my current role, I decided this time will be different, and I will take steps to avoid experiencing burnout.   

This goal has led me down the rabbit hole that is mindful productivity. Mindful productivity is defined as being consciously present in what you're doing while you are doing it and calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings and thoughts when engaged in work or creative activities. This doesn’t mean you stop whatever you are doing, it's about seeing the present moment without pressing the pause button. It's interrupting the autopilot mode we often use daily, taking time to appreciate the little things, thoughts and feelings, and the world around us.

To practice mindful productivity, you have to think of it as a set of principles that can be used as a flexible roadmap that anyone can apply to work and feel better. So let's get to it:   

10 Principles of Mindful Productivity:   

Presence: Live in the Present   

Try not to get trapped in the past and pre-living future worries. This thinking causes you not to be able to enjoy the here fully and the now and can make it hard to concentrate on your tasks.  

I fell victim to this went starting this role. I was so afraid of making a mistake and so consumed with the past mistakes that I made....even more mistakes. I have since adopted the attitude that I will make mistakes because I am just starting my career. I know the bare minimum, and all my mistakes are necessary.   

Awareness: Watch your thoughts and emotions   

When your mind wanders, bring it back to the task at hand.  

You want to be aware of your emotions and thoughts so you can accept them, move on, and return to being productive.   

Flow: Get in the flow  

A highly focused mental state which facilitates productivity   

Can be described as "Getting in the zone" or feeling absorbed in an activity   

Define your goal, cut the distractions, take a deep breath, and keep your mind fully attentive.   

The brain is often the happiest when you are engaged in the meaningful pursuit of a goal.   

Single Task: Avoid Multitasking   

It's not a secret that constantly switching contexts between different tasks hurts your attention and makes you less focused. In a perfect world, people who focus on one task at a time are calmer, more effective, and more productive, but we have to find a balance in the real world.  

Use Mindful Context Switch to strike a balance between productivity and responsiveness.  

Motivation: Question your procrastination   

Use the DUST model to understand why you are procrastinating. 

Curiosity: Cultivate your curiosity  

Curiosity helps you learn. It enables you to remember better information; the more curious you are about a topic, the more likely you are to remember it.  

Observe the world, take the time to learn, ask questions, don't take anything for granted.   

Growth: Develop a growth mindset  

A growth mindset means you believe you can grow your intelligence and skills with hard work.  

It would help to question your fixed mindset attitudes to see what's holding you back.  

Metacognition: Use metacognition strategies   

A powerful form of self-monitoring and self-regulation  

It means being in tune with your awareness to determine the best strategies for learning and problem-solving and when to apply them.   

Instead of blindly working away, take the time to plan, monitor and evaluate your working and learning experiences.   

Environment: Pay attention to your work environment   

Be mindful of where you work and how it affects your productivity. Understand what works for you and adapt your environment based on your findings.   

Also, consider your habits when designing your environment.   

Breaks: Take mindful breaks   

Using breaks to remind yourself to be mindful of your thoughts, emotions, and your environment  

Set aside time for the present moment to clear your mind and take it off red alert.    

Unplug and come up for air: Make sure you have ample time for other pursuits besides productivity. It doesn't hurt to limit your screentime.  

Take time to breathe, eat a snack, and look out the window.   

Practicing mindful productivity can seem like a daunting task, but take it from me. It's well worth the effort. Life can get hectic, but by letting the principles of mindfulness act as a guiding point in your everyday life, you can be present in the midst of it all.

time travel in ten - sequential narrative collage piece done for my class, Artifact.

ramblings below the cut for those interested in the process/life update for friends who have noticed i've been gone

right lmao. i had two weeks to do this project and had a completely different idea that i just could not get myself to be excited about. emailed my prof in desperation, but it being like 10 pm meant that she was not about to respond. within 30 minutes, as it goes, i got struck with divine inspiration by whatever force of nature governs procrastination-induced genius, and i promptly spent the next 12 waking hours non-stop working on this.

my class, artifact, is a requirement for the foundation year at the college i attend. it centers around time-based media, ranging from the sequential illustration here to video later in the semester, and a bunch of other projects designed to get us thinking in 4d. artifact is the theme of the class - my peers are doing the same projects under a variety of different themes (tragically, haunting filled up too quickly and i missed out on enrollment in that one).

our first project was designing an artifact and doing a write-up of the story behind it. the girl to my left made beaded spiders members of a fictional cult carried. the guy across from me made an amulet of a long-dead god. you get the vibes. mine, which I still need to take professional photos of, is a pocketwatch that lets you time travel. cause, yknow. i'm me. it was gonna be about time travel.

i had originally intended to do a bunch of drawings of the watch's owner, building out her backstory and the world she lives in, and explaining why the watch exists,,,, then i couldn't bring myself to pick up the stylus. I just can't seem to find the energy for my usual digital art (sorry friends i miss yall i'm still here i swear).

I haven't drawn fanart or my ocs in months now, since last semester, and I miss it a whole bunch but right now that creative energy just. is not happening. i don't plan on abandoning it forever by any means, but p much everything i have is going towards school right now. sad as that is, i'm having so much fun, and i'm so proud of the technical improvements i've made. I've got so many things i want to create, mostly for my ocs. i still love crit role, but i've fallen of campaign three. i don't have the time, and the story hasn't been engaging me for a bit.

i've been really into dr who lately, and am eagerly waiting for the spare time to sit and watch all of candela obscura. i'm in a new dnd game. i've got friends! real life friends! irl friends who called me the wizard friend within a few hours of knowing me before i even opened my mouth about dnd lmao. i've discovered a new love of collage, and i've just declared my major in something unique to my school, a program called Studio for Interrelated Media. i'll be learning about illustration still through the extra electives i'll have room for, but i also get to explore printmaking in more depth, as well as event planning, installation, curation, and theatre work as well.

i miss being on here a whole bunch and want to be more active when i get more time. don't plan on abandoning this blog by any means. boston has been kind to me, and though i have had some Real Low Points, i've also been living the life i've hoped for since i was a kid. i'm good, really really good.

Sooo I'm currently on spring break and I feel like this is finally a good opportunity to break into a bunch of new good habits! Today I plan on setting some goals for myself and maybe telling you a bit about my day and stuff :)

I'll break this down into a couple sections...

𝙰𝚌𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚖𝚒𝚌 𝚐𝚘𝚊𝚕𝚜

During quarters 1-3 of the school year I was kind of out of it, I didn't really study or do much. I wasn't up to my own standards and I think that's because I didn't really set clear standards for myself. I feel if I start planning more and setting more goals I can have improved motivation and productivity that I've yet to experience. During this last quarter of the school year I want to actually be active in school and mentally, here's some goals I've set...

bring all my average grades up to at least A's (bio is killing me ;-;)

make quizlets for each class to prepare for finals !!

to start actively participating in class taking notes and finally raising my hand

to actually spend at least one day a week studying (a small start— but an impactful one :3)

𝙰𝚝𝚑𝚕𝚎𝚝𝚒𝚌 𝚐𝚘𝚊𝚕𝚜

I've never really been an athletic person until now. My whole life I was never forced into sports or anything, I always wanted my mom to do something like that, but she never did, and with that I just grew up kind of lazy. At the age of 11 I picked up gymnastics but then stopped due to the pandemic, I didn't really train or anything so I didn't improve till I started taking classes again, I've been taking classes for around 2 years straight now but only recently I actually started taking gymnastics seriously, I've realized that I could be just as good as the girls I long to be like if I'd only put in the work and effort.

I didn't really realize how much I liked sports up until a couple weeks ago when I impulsively joined my schools track team out of boredom, I'm lowkey one of the worst on the team, but from the bottom you can only move upwards! Now I really want to take my sports seriously, I'm on my gymnastics pre-competitive team and I'm thinking about committing to their bronze team this fall, but I need to actually put in effort now, and I really need to improve at track. Here's my current goals that I'm aiming for...

to start stretching everyday

to run a mile everyday till I can reach a 5 minute mile easily

to get a 15 second 100m dash (guys I'm slow ik...)

to vault 6ft on pole vault

to regain my lost skills on bars (after my last gymnastics comp I keep getting overly anxious before doing legit the easiest skills on bars)

to train my core more

My mental states been pretty messy recently, but I've been contemplating what's factoring into it and I'm come to the conclusion that my habits need to improve, they've been negatively effecting me for too long, now it's time I implement good habits. I always procrastinate, I think but never do, my rooms a mess which ='s my brain being a mess. I need to get myself together by cleaning and starting new good habits, some of these habits include...

working out and stretching everyday (as mentioned before!)

making sure to do my skincare every morning and every night (recently I've finally invested in some new skincare products and this is really a helpful habit both physically and mentally for me)

cleaning my room and keeping it clean

having me time (whether it be reading a book or playing a lil video game by myself, I feel like as an extrovert I literally force myself to be around or on call with people 24/7 and I think I need to start having time to reflect and be just Kay for a minute)

I feel like my whole life I've been terrified of rejection, I've let it get a hold of me. Sometimes I miss out on really good things, since I'm too anxious of the possibility of an unhappy outcome. I think what really made me wanna start rejection therapy is that a week or so ago I applied for this really cool looking job at a creative workshop and got rejected due to my word choice and not diving deep enough into my experiences within the application, it really upset me. I finally put myself out there and I got rejected. Rejection is really scary, I've confessed to like 3 people and gotten rejected 2/3 times... I feel as though I need to prove to myself that rejection isn't that bad, if it's meant to be it'll be, and if it doesn't that is perfectly fine. To combat this fear and disappointment rejection gives me I'm going to put myself out there more. Who knows, maybe good will come out of this too :) I'm gonna start... (these aren't really 100% rejection but I think they'll help me be less scared of the possibility of rejection yk?)

trying to talk to more new people (I'm always terrified that they'll tell me to go away or that I'm annoying or something)

thinking about the commodification of fandom

so given recent experiences i couldn't help but wonder how the creative expressions in fandoms—drawing, writing—have been commodified as of lately, and how this has impacted negatively my way of creating and reading my own creations.

first, there was the change between art and content.

or, how we have begun understanding that we are not artists, but content creators. that's how fans perceive our world and it has to do with the change in social media and neoliberalism, the capitalization of the self and productivism. while media gurus tell us that we need to work hard and harder on what we do—citing steve jobs' autobiography and jeff bezos or elon mush or whoever has become rich and succesful, as seen by a capitalist society—we have forgotten the joy of simply doing things for the sake of it. just like how it's not well seen that we might be in the sofa all day watching series if they are not series that will make our mind broaden, or reading books to make us feel more intelligent, manuals on how to stop procrastinating, it is not well seen that we should dedicate our own time to do something just because we like it if we don't have more ambition than that.

similarly, the people reading fanfiction or watching art don't feel part of a community in which they have to interact because we have been told that we should strive for our own individualistic needs. we should not take responsibility for the feels of others; not assume toxicity in partners (even though we are all toxic in our ways). we have not been told of the power to heal in community, rather, to heal alone. and while the line between staying and staying in toxic environments is very thin, the line still stands. i can have toxic traits and work to make myself better, but i can't hardly have the healing if i'm not interacting with people. so, if art is the thing that threads between this fine line in relationship/community, and in a fine line overall, and we are getting rid of all the nuances, how can someone experience art? if not as something that can be consumed, then tossed out, not even expressing how you feel, because you're supposed to experience all of this in a solitary, individualistic way?

then, the ambition became the commodification of the self.

while the discourse is that we should strive to be the best in what we do, and be successful in what we do, how can we stop not desiring for it? when we are in a community in which the only computable way of knowing what is good and what's not are the ratings, the kudos, the comments: how can we get more and more, and more of that? which brings us to commodify ourselves in social media: a writer that only writes on ao3 and doesn't promote their work can't see the same numbers as someone who's on social media. i am all for promoting your work and talking about your work, don't get me wrong. but there is something inherently capitalistic in doing so, which is, you're not leaving anything to chance. even if this thing doesn't bring you any money and it's just for the fun. it is capitalistic because you as a writer are being exposed in a way that you're interesting. we all crave for authenticity in fandom, but i wonder how much of it it's true, or it's a façade and a new identity that we form around ourselves to appeal to the public of our creations. we are selling our thoughts on fandom, our work, our effort—our graphics, which in my fandom everyone does, me included; our opinions, not because there's something about community but because we understand community as an amount of something. community translates to something else rather than just an exchange. —this, of course, doesn't apply all of the time with all our promotions and all our exchanges—

finally, the commodification of the self and the change to content became self censorship.

which is to say: how can we appeal to the community if we are not offering the content the community does? either we change communities, find other smaller communities that understand us, or we risk to perceive our work as not being meaningful or valuable anymore. because our work is not for us, because we should be successful in what we do, we may be writing what we want but with the changes that we think will appeal to the public. smut sells best: let's write smut, even if it wasn't on our mind; some dark themes can get us cancelled: let's keep it clean and understandable; even if we write smut and dark themes: let's tag the impossible so that there's no mistaking in reading our work and we don't get hate, because god forbid someone actually began reading and could guess how the work is going to go and just left and moved on. we are approaching art the same way a youtuber approaches tags. we are thinking of creating the same way a tiktoker plans their videos. and not all of fanfiction needs to be art—fanfiction should be, inherently, fun—but then we are approaching fun with a commodification and professionalization that doesn't mean fun anymore.

we can be successful in fandom: we can have our promotion tool and our favs and our rts and our ratings; we can get people talking about our work, get the deserved comments—that we wouldn't have gotten because it's only enough to click on the work and leave a kudo maybe—; but even after all our effort we don't get what we're looking for, doesn't translate to anything that we can commodify, we are going to feel empty and meaningless, and it's going to affect our art and how we view it, and we are going to think: next time, i'm going to write something everyone will like.

and that's the problem: nobody, not even you, can tell you what you're going to write next.

This asteroid was named after the astronaut that discovered it. Due to it's cute name, I decide to investigate about it because an anon asks it. After evaluating my own placement, I believe the definition of this asteroid refers to where or which area grows faster than others. Holiday Hijinx, Fluff Edition

Merry Christmas!

@thesere1418, let me try to answer your actual question: how does Team Treasure spend Christmas?

Last time, I posited some theories on what the gang’s pre-treasure hunt Christmases looked like. The short version: lonely and isolated to varying degrees. Sometimes of the “sitting home alone” variety, and sometimes more “alone in a crowd.”

This time, we’ll look at how Team Treasure might spend Christmas after the events of National Treasure bring them all together. Fluff will ensue! But since I’m a hopeless pedant, I’m going to make you work for it.

Let’s begin with the timeline. Way back in the very first issues of this blog (insert nostalgic awww), we took a deep dive into the timeline of National Treasure, both how long the events of the movie take place and when they take place. If we’re looking at the first Christmas after the movie, the timeline piece will become very important.

As I wrote there:

The 70th Anniversary of the National Archives really was in 2004. The organization was founded on June 19th, 1934. June 19th 2004 was a Saturday, so it’s conceivable that the Gala was meant to be that weekend. However, based on all the characters’ clothing, I’ve always felt like National Treasure was a fall movie. … It’s already dark when Ben arrives. Sunset on June 18th, 2004 was at 8:36pm in Washington DC, so that gets us to potentially 9-11. However, that seems like a late start, especially considering this gala’s attendees are probably mainly older, wealthy donors. In September, sunset would have been closer to 7pm. I still think it’s fall. All we know for certain is that the story had to take place before October 31, as that was the last day of daylight savings time in 2004.

Based on the National Archives fact, the movie should theoretically take place in June. However, this is not how you dress in Washington D.C, Philadelphia, or New York in the summer.

This could be explained by the fact the the movie actually filmed in September 2003 - February 2004. And they’re dressed like it. It’s impossible (for me anyway) to watch the movie and believe it’s anything but fall.

In my heart, National Treasure is a November movie. However, we know that doesn’t fit canonically either since the story had to take place before the end of Daylight Savings Time, October 31, 2004.

So let’s say it’s mid-October.

That means the first post-treasure hunt Christmas is only two months and change later.

As I posit in…an article I haven’t published yet, oops, I don’t think Ben and Abigail got together immediately after the treasure hunt. I think Abigail is too pragmatic to make a major decision like that on the heels of having her whole life turned upside down by the treasure hunt, and I think Ben has been burned before by women who found his whole Indiana Jones schtick charming, until it wasn’t.

Also, what season is the “Three months later” epilogue supposed to be? September? For our purposes a unseasonably mild January day, I guess.

Team Treasure’s First Christmas

The reason I am dwelling on this, other than because it delays the creative work of imagining things that didn’t happen on screen, which I am inevitably procrastinating, is because deciding when the treasure hunt took place really colors how Team Treasure spends their first Christmas together.

If the treasure hunt happened in June, then things have had time to settle down by December. Ben and Abigail are new but reasonably well established couple, Ben is settled into his massive new house, and the logistics of dealing with the treasure are well enough under control that everyone can take a breather.

If the treasure hunt happens in October, none of these things are the case. Sorting out who is working on the treasure, what pieces are going where, security, research, transportation, sale donation, etc. etc. is still a full-time nightmare headache. Ben and Abigail are toying with the idea of actually dating but haven’t taken the plunge. Ben bought his big stupid house but it’s 80% empty rooms and 20% cardboard boxes.

So.

Riley and Abigail still go home for the holidays, but although the basic sequence of events is the same as it always has been, the feel is very different. Abigail is no longer just the reserved, quiet, nerdy aunt. Riley is no longer the burnout computer geek uncle. They’re treasure hunters. They’re famous, at least for this moment in time. Everyone is either tiptoeing around them or running up to ask a bunch of questions.

For Riley: “Were you scared?” “How many crimes did you commit?” “Did you really fool the FBI?” “How did you break into the National Archives?” “What does the Declaration of Independence feel like?” “Does this mean you’ll get a better job now?” “Will IBM take an almost-felon back?” “What are your plans moving forward?” “You know, that Gates fellow isn’t going to need you any more.” “Have you thought about a history degree?”

For Abigail: “That treasure hunter’s pretty handsome. Hint hint, googly eyes.” “How did you meet?” “Is he as charming as he looks on TV?” (Oh my god mom.) “You’re sure you’re not in trouble at work?” “You worked so hard to get where you are. I’d hate to see you throw it away on some crackpot. Even if he’s rich now.” “Does the Archives give medals? You should get one.”

It’s a lot, but they get through it. They both know that this is a one-time thing. The Templar Treasure won’t be the hot news story next year.

As for the Gates boys, Ben is finally the center of attention at his mother’s Christmas party in a good way. For the first time he can arrive with his head held high. The academics spend all night asking him detailed questions about the treasure and the search, how he knew where to look for Charlotte, what he’s learned about the contents of the cavern so far. The attention and interest feels good, but nothing feels better than his mother’s proud smile saying, That’s my boy.

And on Christmas day, Ben and Patrick have dinner together. It’s stilted and awkward at first, especially since it’s just the two of them. There’s no one else to serve as a buffer, and their years of estrangement hang over the afternoon like inescapable clouds. “Oh, you play poker?” “Been in the same Thursday night poker group for fifteen years.” Silence.

But then the topic switches to John, and early Christmases the three of them spent together. “Grandpa and I spent a day driving all over D.C. looking for the perfect ship in a bottle. I think we visited twelve different antique dealers that day. That was my first treasure hunt, I guess.” “I still have it. It’s right here.” “I always thought you hated it. I know you and he didn’t see eye to eye about the treasure.” “We didn’t. But it was from you, so it was always special to me.”

It’s ends up being a pleasant evening of reminiscing, and an important step as Ben and Patrick start to rebuild their relationship.

Subsequent Christmases

And finally, your actual question!

By the next year, everything is much more settled. Ben, and now possibly Abigail as well, actually live in the giant house. It’s filled with books and antique furniture and maps to possible future treasures. It’s lived-in and it’s theirs. They’re an established couple at this point, and the treasure situation is much more under control. And it would be insane of them not to throw a Christmas party in that massive, massive house.

The house is decked out with vintage Christmas decorations and a fifteen foot tree. In the style of the 18th century, the main fireplace is decorated with fruit and greens. There’s catering and a hundred guests and a band (perhaps that same string quartet from the gala?). This first year especially, they really go all out.

But their actual Christmas Eve and Christmas day celebrations are much more intimate. Abigail makes a selection of German Christmas cookies and she and Ben and Riley decorate a second, smaller tree on Christmas Eve. Riley brings kugel and rugelach from his favorite deli and tells them about some of his favorite family traditions. Patrick stops by for a while and they sip nice wine or nicer scotch around the fire while reminiscing about the insane last year that brought them together. The treasure hunt but also the excavation of the treasure and their travels around the world to all the exhibit openings.

Ben and Abigail dance to slow jazz in the firelight. Patrick beats Riley at chess, repeatedly.

They exchange gifts, but what do you get new multi-millionaires who just found a history-redefining treasure?

Gifts

Ben gives Riley an early prototype of Hedy Lamarr’s frequency hopping radio that would become the basis for wifi and GPS technology. He gives Abigail letter written by George Washington that he once found in an old house in Virginia. And he gives Patrick a framed photo of himself, Patrick, and John. In all the hubbub about the treasure someone had tracked down old family photos of theirs.

Riley gives Ben a framed blueprint of the National Archives overlaid with the exact route he took to steal the Declaration. There’s a small note at the bottom that says “Security has since been upgraded.” He gives Abigail a computer program that can sort her email much more accurately that any built-in program in 2004 could. (He’s been working with the National Archives to bolster their digital security.) For Patrick, he’s not really sure what to get, but when Ben suggests a nice bottle of scotch, Riley takes it a step farther and gets a custom blend made and labeled “Trinity Church Staircase (contains no actual 200 year old wood).”

Abigail gives Riley a book of American history written in an fun, narrative style—picture Drunk History in book form—and a state of the art remote control drone. She gives Patrick an set of antique letters from a period she knows is of interest to him. And for Ben, she puts together a scrapbook off newspaper coverage of the treasure from all over the world. She puts out a call to the archivists community, in addition to the papers and magazines she’s been collecting as they travel.

Patrick gives Riley a computer programing manual from the 1940s, one of the earliest in the world, and a two books on conspiracy theories, one from the 1870s and one from the 1970s. He gives Abigail antique records of her favorite composer, and brings an album of baby pictures of Ben to show her. And for Ben, he gives him the Gates family scrapbook, which Patrick has taken and updated with pictures of Ben and the treasure.

The Gang’s Christmas Superpowers

As for special holiday skills,

Ben is a master gift finder. He doesn’t give gifts too often (he’s pretty oblivious to the whole thing) but when he does, he finds the perfect item. It’s never something off the shelves, it’s the same antique china pattern your grandparents had when you were a kid, or a vintage book on your favorite topic.

Abigail is the perfect gift wrapper. Her fastidious nature, steady hands, and decade of training to handle delicate paper items make her excellent at it, no matter the shape or size. Perfect corners every time, paired with the perfect ribbon and bow.

Riley doesn’t love Christmas music, but if he has to hear it, he wants to hear what he tolerates, so he’s created a database of all the best Christmas music ranked by decade, vibe, and his personal taste. He can whip up the perfect playlist for any occasion in seconds.

Patrick can tell you a historical Christmas event from any year between 1717 and 1990. Choose any year and he’ll have an anecdote about the news of the time, anything from small town goings on to world-changing battles and decisions.
