What are these creatures? Arctic ribbon seals. Bizarre and beautiful, yes?

Ribbon Seal (Histriophoca fasciata)
Family: Seal Family (Phocidae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Found in arctic regions of the northern Atlantic Ocean, the Ribbon Seal can be immediately distinguished from all other seals thanks to the distinctive banded fur of adults (typically black-and-white in males, while females can be black-and-white or brown-and-white), the purpose of which is something of a mystery (it has been suggested to be a form of camouflage, but how such a striking pattern would be any more effective as camouflage than the countershading seen in many other marine mammals is unclear.) Ribbon Seals spend the majority of their lives in the open ocean where they live solitary lives and feed on squids, octopuses and bony fishes such as cods, pollocks and eelpouts. During the later winter and early spring, however, large numbers of Ribbon Seals haul themselves onto masses of sea ice that are disconnected from the mainland to mate, give birth and undergo seasonal molts. During the mating season males will court females by producing grunts and roars using an inflatable sac in their throat (with each male courting and mating with several females), and after mating females are capable of delayed implantation (meaning that they can delay the development of fertilized ova until the ideal conditions to give birth in are met, in this case when sea ice is at its most abundant, to allow an embryo to develop.) After a gestation period of around 10-11 months a female Ribbon Seal will give birth to a single pup which is born with soft, fluffy white fur that (though suitable for providing camouflage and insulation) is not water tight, forcing them to remain on the ice they were born on until their adult coat develops (at which point their mother will guide them into the ocean and teach them how to hunt.)

Via The Guardian - “I was sent the book and my agents thought it wouldn’t necessarily be in my wheelhouse,” Colin admits. “But within 50 pages I knew I wanted to make it. To some people it’s bleak and violent, but I love that about it. It seems to say something very important about what drives us as human beings, so it made sense for me, somehow. It tuned into everything else I’ve done.”
“I’ve never played a character with so little compunction or apology or who does things this despicable,” says Colin of a figure who is as barbaric to his fellow man as he is to animals.
“I ate a lot and lifted some heavy weights. I looked at Victorian boxers and dockers, trying to get the belly and the muscle. It was not done under the supervision of medical professionals at all and was really ill advised.”
The day they said: ‘We’re heading back to open water,’ I’ll never forget the relief I felt that nobody died.”

The cast and crew took on the polar plunge, by jumping into the Arctic waters in their pants. There was a lot of swearing! 🤬

I think Henry Drax is the darkest role Colin Farrell has played. It’s quite gruesome to watch. I also think Stephen Graham is an incredible actor (Line of Duty, Gangs of New York).
At BFI, Colin said: “It was one of two times in my life where you couldn’t take off the costume, I couldn’t really step away from the character. It was always with me.”
“We were telling a very ugly story in a very beautiful place,” he added. “There was something in that contrast or contradiction that was very powerful.”

Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus)
Family: Sleeper Shark Family (Somniosidae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Found in cold regions of the Arctic and northern Atlantic oceans, the Greenland Shark is best known for its extremely long lifespan: members of this species regularly live to be over 200 years old, with some individuals living for over 400 years. Sluggish and extremely slow when swimming, it is an opportunistic carnivore that will take any sufficiently large prey that comes near enough for it to catch: it feeds largely on squids and smaller fish such as herrings, halibuts and salmon, but on occasion may also eat animals as large as seals, sea lions and dolphins (although as Greenland Sharks have rarely been seen actively attacking marine mammals and are far too slow to catch a healthy dolphin or seal, it is suspected that most of the marine mammals found in their stomachs were already dead when they were eaten - this would also explain the occasional discovery of the remains of terrestrial animals such as Reindeer and Polar Bears in their digestive tracts.) While little is known about the Greenland Shark’s life cycle, it is believed that they reproduce rarely and take a considerable amount of time to do so - current estimates (based on the development and estimated age of various adult and juvenile Greenland Sharks caught by fishers) suggest that they take over 100 years to reach sexual maturity, and upon successful mating their eggs (which develop and hatch inside their mother’s body) take a further 8-18 years to hatch. Greenland Sharks are frequently caught by fishing vessels (both deliberately to be eaten or for their livers, the oils of which are sold as having medicinal properties, and accidentally as by-catch), and this practice combined with the very slow rate at which they repopulate due to their extremely long generation length has caused concerning declines in populations of this species in recent years. The high concentration of the compound Trimethylamine N-oxide in the organs, fat and muscles of the Greenland Shark (which aids the shark’s tissues in enduring intense cold) means that the flesh of this species is poisonous to most animals if not first dried or fermented.
