Alright so, I’ve always associated Bowser with the color red due to his eyes and hair, as well as his fire power. Nintendo associates him with yellow usually, most likely to differentiate him from Mario, and probably due to a majority of his body being yellow. (Though, Nintendo has also specifically used red and black for him and red and white for Mario as well.)

HOWEVER I recently came to the conclusion that both Nintendo and I are wrong! And that Bowser actually has a favorite color. Purple.

This is 4 separate instances (4 because two of the images come from the same game) of Bowser having the choice of a color for something and picking purple. He does not have control over the color of his body, nor the color of his hair and eyes (unless he dyes it/wears contacts but that’s beside the point). What he does have control over is the color of his throne, car, blanket, and wedding attire.

Mario’s favorite color being red makes sense, because he chooses to wear red clothes. In the same sense that Luigi chooses to wear green and Peach chooses to wear pink. Well, Bowser chooses purple.

I've been on a Super Mario Bros. kick lately from having snagged a copy of the standalone game at a game store in-town (Now, I have three versions of SMB on NES!), and seeing how the simplicity of the game's visual style has grown on me, I wanted to attempt spriting in its style... and who better to sprite than myself? 💖✨

But that's not all! Not only was I able to craft a SMB-styled sprite of yours truly, but I also went the extra mile and designed an entire NES black box for a StarDestroyer81 twist of Super Mario Bros... I had an idea to redesign vox because I didn't love that a character obsessed with modernization would wear a top hat and bowtie. then after a brief stint into madness where I read my partner's historic costuming textbook I drew.... all this.

(side note: the idea of vox being a trans man who transitioned AFTER death was super compelling and absolutely inspired by @prince-liest so while this is not direct fanart of their series I wanted to give a shoutout anyway!!!)

okay some TRULY unhinged rambling about historic costume below the cut YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

1950s: for this design I very much did not want to go to the typical a-line housewife look, because I feel that is unfitting for vox's character. instead I went for a more business look, but there is still a level of femininity that he would have been expected to perform. i wanted to express his discomfort with that through the pose and expression, though at the time he wouldn't necessarily have a framework for why he hated it

1960s: this one was very fun. i loved the idea of vox beginning to eschew some of the expected feminine presentation, and he no longer wears makeup, jewelry, or hose (though its hard to tell in black & white); however, he's kind of at war with himself in this time period. he's obsessed with seeming perfect and having a respectable image, so he would not go in for the counter-culture movements that were so big in the 60s. he's still kind of riding those coattails though, pushing those boundaries while still not acknowledging his queerness.

1970s: to me, it was very important that the gender hit as he entered the world in color. in my mind the gender euphoria is physically manifested in a wizard of oz situation - he can become who he always has been. anyway, gender aside, I think it was very important to me personally that he wore an ascot. it was for my mental health.

1980s: I wanted the 1980s to be the period where he began to gain some power and notoriety because of the de-regulation of television during this period to allow more ads, mirroring real-world history. I think if the 70s were when vox gained some real confidence, the 80s are when he got an Ego (tm). "business casual" also began to become more acceptable in this time period, and the t-shirt/suit jacket combo was very important for me to include, as to me it epitomizes the commercialism and machismo of the 80s.

1990s: this was actually the decade I was the most nervous to design, and yet I think it turned out the best? the 90s are known for grunge, which I think is NOT vox's style at all. I decided instead to lean hard into the yuppie look, which I know is more associated with the 80s but was definitely still a thing in the 90s. I also allowed a little hip-hop influence in the form of a gold chain from val, which is not something I think vox would ever pick on his own.

2000s: if the 90s were the decade I was worried about and turned out great, the 2000s are the decade I thought I had down SO GOOD and then totally floundered in execution. I still love the bubble-mac inspired head, and I tried to make his clothes as "round" as possible. I also like that this is the time where his saturation got cranked. however, I don't know if I'm in love with the vest and super bright sneakers, because again, looking back on it, he kind of looks like he works at a movie theater or best buy or some shit lol,,,

2010s: I think it's telling that this is by far the closest to his canon design (2014 tumblr lookin ass). I really wanted to pull from that hipster tech bro era, but unfortunately that aesthetic has a veneration for "retro" which again, is not fitting for vox. I still think he would wear the bowtie during this time because, well... he sure does in the show!

2020s: this was fun because I had an excuse to pull from haute couture design rather than street fashion because of the introduction of velvette into his life. I truly do not think velvette would let vox and val walk around in the outfits that they do because it would be an actual embarrassment LMAO. for this, I wanted his decorative "robes" to be evocative of the time he depicted himself as a priest AND of a cape/robe of an emperor. he does think of himself as that bitch, after all.

You look into the room to the right of you. There, you see Mike Schmidt. He was holding the comatose girl's hand. As he got up and leaned down, he whispered something to her, and he made eye contact with you.

You looked at him and then down at her and continued to walk forward. You don't bother to look behind to see if he followed, it was an intimate moment and that wasn't for you, not any more at least. You pushed the doors open and saw her. Her eyes glazed over you and light up with recognition.

"Y/N!"

She hopped off the chair and ran towards you. Your heart ached, you gave her a small smile and returned her hug.

"Hi Abby. How are you? How's school?"

"I've missed you so much. None of the other babysitters are as fun as you. Schools fine! I've made real friends."

You knew it was hard for her with her active imagination and timid personality. A warm and sincere smile made it to your face. "That's so good Abby!" Abby motioned you to lower down and bit, you obliged, crouched down and was face to face.

She brings her tiny cuffed shaped hand towards your ear. "Mike misses you." It waa small and timid, she was unsure of your reaction to the secret she shared. She was there when the fallout happened and she knew it was horrible.

The smile faded a bit but was plastered back on when she was done whispering. Her face was full of hope and worry.

Leaning in, you whispered back, "I miss him too sometimes. But you gotta keep it a secret Abs." She nodded and put her pinky out.

"I will!" It was sealed with a stamp. The doors opened again and Abby looked behind you to see her brother.

Mike's breathing hitched as the doors opened. There you were with your long h/c hair. A black spaghetti dress, with little flowers, a green knitted jacket, with see through leggings and boots. When you turned to face him he saw the onyx necklace he gave you for your birthday. It had been two months before he saw you again. With your flushed cheeks, long eyelashes, and full lips, and here you were in the hospital waiting room.

"Hi." It was meek and awkward and so fucking Mike.

You gave a silent sigh, "Hi Mike." You gave a wave. He noticed your nails were longer, and painted dark green, his favorite color.

He stuffed his hand in his pockets. "Um… what were you two talking about?"

Abby spoke before you had a chance, "It's a secret." He raised an eyebrow at her and gave a snarky smile.

"Oh yeah?"

She nodded her head, "Yup," she popped the p.

You gave a smile. Mike looked at you. And you looked back.

"Well I guess it can't be helped."

You shook your head, "Sorry those are the rules." Abby giggled at your solemn expression.

"Can Y/N come over for dinner? Please Mike I miss drawing with her." His eyes widened at the sudden request.

"Oh… um.. well… we- we don't know if uh Y/N has plans or not." He stumbled to get the words out.

There was a nervous pit in your stomach. You wanted to vomit. Abby turned to you.

"Please Y/N we can have pizza or spaghetti or both!"

'Ah her favorite combo.' You gave an inward chuckle. She skipped to you and grabbed your hand.

Abby smiled and giggled. She started to pull you towards the exit. "Come on! Let's go then."

Mike gave a wide eyed look when the question was directed at him. He found himself nodding. "Yeah of course."

The smile came back on her face and she ran to Mike. She started to pull Mike now. "Mike hurry! We have to get food for when Y/N comes!"

"Okay okay jeez. Um I'll text you then?" There was a slight desperation in his voice.

You nodded and the sibling duo left.

You groaned and let your head fall in your hands. Of course, just fuck yourseld over. Great. Perfect.

Your mind and heart were racing. 'This could only end badly.'

Mike started the car and looked at Abby through the rear view mirror.

Abby stared back. "What."

"Why did you invite her Abs?"

"Because I've missed her. And so do you! Y/N was the best babysitter ever and you scared her off." She mumbled the last part to herself but Mike still heard.

He sighed and reversed out of the parking space. Abby was right, Mike scared her. No, what he did was worse. If Y/N ever forgave he would thank god himself.

There you were, same outfit but with a simple gold chain, the one your mother gave you. You held an artist box and a plate full of ginger snap cookies. You baked them without realizing these were Mike's favorite cookies. You were so used to making them for him and Abby, it came naturally without a second thought.

You rang the doorbell, there was something you assumed was stumbling to the door, and then there was Mike. He looked disheveled and bags under his eyes, while he looked incredibly fucking hot it made you want to jump him right then and there; he also looke tired and worn out. It made your heart ache at the thought of him falling deeper into despair.

"Hey."

"Hi."

He glanced down at the art supplies. "Oh uh here let me get them for you."

As he took it, your hand touched and a shock ran up your back. "Thank you."

"Y/N!" Abby dashed through the hallway and all but shoved Mike. She gripped your hand like you would disappear if she let go.

You glanced around, everything was the same. Everything felt the same. The stripes are intentional! Her sleeves are also long and thick at the bottom like Marionette's arms! I also tried to theme her clothes with some Puppet colors: the purple/black/white/red combos!

I'd like to think that the top of Susie's dress resembles Chica's bib a bit! Though it initially was not intentionally at all haha.

Fritz has physical disabilities, mainly regarding walking-- and one of his hands crunches up a lot. So I guess you could see that reflected in Foxy having his own physical issues. (And Foxy's hook!) So while it's not much of a little design detail in the way the others are there's still a parallel. (I might have given him a few crooked teeth though, to make them jagged like Foxy's?)

It is good and interesting:)

All four of these characters have such cool contrasts and similarities to one another it’s very fascinating to think about.
