Nintendo Shuts Down Independent Smash Bros. Circuit

Smash World Tour was an ongoing third party Smash Bros. Ultimate and Melee circuit with a prize pool of $250.000. After months of mostly promising conversation with Nintendo, organisers were told by Nintendo they will have to shut the circuit down and also cancel plans for a 2023 SWT, allegedly resulting in losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars for SWT.

Nintendo officially licenses another circuit held by E-Sports org Panda/Panda Global. The CEO of Panda allegedly tried to leverage this license to force events to participate in the Panda Cup, even on potentially unfavourable terms, going so far as to threaten Beyond The Summit to shut down their entire Smash operation in 2023. He also repeatedly told event organisers that Smash World Tour would likely be shut down. This occurred even when SWT's talks with Nintendo still looked promising. This could mean that the CEO of Panda actively lobbied Nintendo to shut these events down.

Two major tournaments by VGBootCamp were affected and had to be cancelled.

Some top players have already announced to boycott the Panda Cup.

At this point in time, Panda/the CEO of Panda have not made a statement.
