“I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to be more Bishop than you, Bishop,” Vic huffs, dropping heavily onto the couch beside Maya.

Maya frowns, watching as their 18-month-old takes another lap around the coffee table, apparently oblivious that Vic isn’t still chasing her. “What do you mean?”

Beatrice squeals as she passes them, avoiding Vic’s reaching fingers with delight. “This child doesn’t get tired,” Vic explains.

But that only makes Maya frown more. “I get tired,” she mumbles.

“I mean,” Vic carries on, ignoring Maya’s words completely, “Does she ever stop moving? Does she sleep?”

They’ve been at Pru’s birthday party for all of three hours, filling every inch of space available on Ben and Miranda’s main floor. Andrea had slipped into the orbit of Joey as soon as they arrived but Beatrice…

Well, she’s been happily passed amongst anyone willing to play at her speed. Which is, as always, fast.

Their daughter is fiercely into the daredevil stretch of her toddlerhood. Half the day is typically spent tossing her into the air or throwing her over a shoulder or chasing her in circles around the room. It’s an important stage of development, Maya knows, their little girl adjusting to the feel of her body as it moves.

“She has FOMO,” Carina laughs, leaning over the back of the couch at Maya’s shoulder.

Vic nods, eyebrows arching with pride at Carina’s correct use of the slang term. “More Bishop than Bishop,” she repeats.

Carina shakes her head, pressing a kiss to Maya’s cheek to soften the blow. “She will sleep when things are still,” Carina tells Vic, scratching gently at Maya’s scalp as she speaks. Touching, always touching, until Maya’s frown lifts.

“Mama,” Beatrice shrieks when she notices her, redirecting her course to collide with Carina’s legs behind the couch. She’s lifted onto Carina’s hip immediately, little arms circling Carina’s neck as she nuzzles in.

And maybe it is a Bishop trait, Maya ponders, that Beatrice doesn’t ever let on that she’s tired. That she never gives in to a clawing need for stillness even when she should be exhausted.

Or maybe she is just a kid who doesn’t want to miss anything that’s happening.

Beatrice settles her head on Carina’s shoulder, those big brown eyes already beginning to droop as Carina sways their bodies back and forth, murmuring to their little girl in quiet Italian.

“Ah,” Vic nods, drawing Maya’s gaze away from the tiniest yawn, “She sleeps for Carina.” She chuckles, rising from the couch, nudging Maya’s arm as she passes. “She’s definitely more Bishop than you.”

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

A note before we begin: I understand that sometimes people look askance at some of the fundraisers. I do attempt to vet people, but I also attempt to practice a radical level of acceptance and compassion for people who are in need, who may not always be people everyone likes. It is up to my readers to determine where and if they want to give; I have only ever declined to publicize fundraisers twice, both by people with extensive and visible histories of scamming fandom. If you know of someone who has a history of scamming, it is helpful for me to be made aware, but unless there are receipts to go with it, I'm afraid I can't take that into account. Any solo-player/journal games that are a bit more lighthearted, preferably with a focus on character building?

Theme: Light-Hearted, Character-Focused Solo Games.

Hello friend! I have some games here that skew more towards the Light-Hearted end of the scale, while others skew more towards Character Building. I hope one of them fits right in the niche you are looking for!

Souvenirs, by Rémi Töötätä.

You are going on a week-long vacation. You are determined to enjoy every visit you go on and come back home with souvenirs from each day, including one for your friend who is taking care of your pet while you’re away.

During the game, you will keep a journal of the places you’re going to and the souvenirs you’re getting. Draw cards each day of your vacation and use prompts to imagine the places you visit, the items you get as souvenirs and the memories they represent.Make yourself a nice cup of tea, write the diary of your character each day, maybe draw a map of the region and pictures of the items you imagine, or play entirely in your head; and most of all, have a lovely time!

This looks like a very lighthearted game, and the souvenirs you collect as you play seem like excellent tools to convey personal memories. This game is meant to happen over the course of a week, so every morning you can sit down and journal about where your character would visit, and what would catch their eye. As you do so, you’ll also want to think about who you’re buying for, and what kind of connection you have to them. At the end of the game, you’ll have a lovely web of relationships, as well as a little story to take back to your NPC friends.

Hygge Holiday, by Figgins.

Hygge Holiday is a solo journaling RPG set in a cozy small village in a Nordic country.

You’ve travelled home for an extended winter holiday, with lots of vacation time.  Winter is a time to slow down and focus on simple pleasures and good company. Luckily, the Nordic countries offer free health care and university education, on top of many weeks of paid holiday per year, and generous unemployment benefits--meaning less worry, stress and uncertainty, and more time for enjoying the simple pleasures in life. How will you spend your time, and with whom? 

This game probably feels more fitting for the cold weather days, but it certainly looks like a great cozy game none the less. You earn paper snowflakes that reflect your experiences and you will also journal about these memories, which might fit the character-building kind of theme you are looking for!

Etude of the Evening, by Takuma Okada.

Etude of the Evening is a tabletop roleplaying game about recovering lost objects from your brilliant past. It is a hack of Songs for the Dusk by Kavita Poduri and Quinn Vega combined with You Will Destroy Something Beautiful by Samantha Day. Uses a six-sided die, for 1 to 3 players. 1-2 hours.

Overall, I think the tone for this game can vary, but it certainly hits the spot of focusing on your character. You’ll answer questions about who you are at the beginning of the game, and navigate a strange landscape. If you want to focus on a light-hearted tone, then you’ll just want to take descriptive choices that focus on beauty rather than decay.

The Land Beyond, by Cezar Capacle.

You are a raccoon. You lived your whole life on an island but now you have a hot air balloon.

You want to be free and reach The Land Beyond.

The Land Beyond is a solo RPG about letting go and going beyond what you think you could. You travel through wondrous lands living fantastic adventures along the way. 

During your journey, you will have the opportunity to reflect upon the burdens you carry with you and, luckily, let go of them so you can travel even further.

This is a journeying game that looks like it’s probably a little less light-hearted than you’re looking for, but really focuses on character reflection. I like the oracles for events in this book, and the idea of tracking the gas in your balloon in order to see how far you can go. I’m keeping this recommendation in because even if it requires a lot of serious character reflection, at the end of the day, you’re still a raccoon in a hot air balloon - and that just feels whimsical to me.

Creation Myths, by gothHoblin.

Creation Myths is a solo journeying game based on the hero's journey/monomyth narrative template. 

It is designed to help you dive deeper into character creation through the development of a backstory adventure via dice and prompts, and to provide you with new things to think about. It can also work as a way to redevelop existing characters and generate fresh ideas. With multiple modes of play available, all you need is a set of dice and somewhere to write. Let your imagination do the rest!

This is another case of your mileage may vary when it comes to tone, because you’ll be the source of ideas for coming up with a character backstory. This is meant to be pretty genre-agnostic, so you might want to pull from other games or pieces of media to decide what kind of character you want to write backstory for. It’s solely focused on character development, but again, whether or not it’s lighthearted is probably up to you.

Incarnation, by breathing stories.

At some mundane moment, something shifted in you. The number of ‘coincidences’ became too large to be without meaning. The deja vu became impossible to ignore. It hit you, not like a sack of bricks, but like a shawl landing firmly on your shoulders.

This is not your first life. You have lived many others, and now they start trickling in…

In Incarnation, you create a character who has just become aware that the life they are leading is not their first life. Using a tarot deck you will create the story of this character and their past lives, uncovering secrets pleasant and otherwise.

With all that this character has been through, the weight of all they hold, who are they really?

This game has the potential to shift in tone, but since it’s played using a tarot deck, I feel like much of the genre and details will depend on the player’s interpretation. It’s deeply tied to character building, as the game revolves around discovering your character’s past lives. If Anamnesis sounds up your alley, then this game might tick a lot of the same boxes, as it’s built on the same set of rules.

Fox Curio’s Floating Bookshop, by lostwaysclub.

Welcome to the River; a flowing path born at the mountain’s feet. In her high narrows, barely two boats fit lengthwise; a furious pounding of water. From these rocky ravines, she threads her way through the land, until she reaches the Great Sea. Throughout the year, the seasons change and holidays give the chance for you to join in celebrations and festivities with the animalfolk. 

This game is at the top of the list when looking at tone; it’s absolutely lighthearted, but I’m not sure how much it focuses on character building. Most of the focus will be on your customers, but I think as you journal, you have the potential to learn more about your character through the kinds of books they sell and how they deal with customers. Overall the tone of this world is so beautiful and peaceful, it’s on my own list of games I’d love to play.

"Your son is an American," Carina declares loudly as she storms into the station beanery.

The team is still mostly corralled around the table, remnants of a dinner they were actually able to sit down and enjoy spread across the kitchen and on a few abandoned plates.

Vic and Ben have already risen to begin on cleanup, rinsing dishes and packing leftovers into containers at the island. Vic, though, halts her movements immediately when she spots Andrea in Carina’s arms.

“Baby A!” she cries excitedly, hands thrown up in the air in delight.

It draws everyone else’s attention, a chorus of greetings called out to the littlest Deluca-Bishop – just as they do each time Pru or any of the other firefighters’ kids enter the station.

They don’t seem to zero-in on Carina as sharply as Maya does, though.

Carina looks frazzled. Her hair has started falling loose from the braid that trails down her back and her cheeks are flushed with her obvious frustration. There’s a stain on her shirt that Maya isn’t entirely sure Carina’s even aware of, spread across her stomach in a shape oddly reminiscent of a tiny, greasy handprint.

She unceremoniously deposits their aforementioned son on the table in front of Maya. “He will not eat real food,” she proclaims, apparently ignoring the raucous of joviality around them.

Andrea, as serious as ever, grins only when he recognizes his mommy. “’Mee,” he whispers, gently patting her hand.

He’s not great with noise, Maya knows, nor very accustomed to being on the receiving end of his mama’s true Italian fury. He might be the only person on Earth who’s never gotten one of her looks.

But then again, he’s not yet two.

“He will not eat fruit or bread or cheese or –” Carina continues, listing off the entire contents of their kitchen as she rambles angrily, foot stomping as though it’s keeping tempo. She swaps from English to Italian and back again as the momentum of her frustration rises.

Andrea eyes her warily, clearly out of his depth.

Maya doesn’t blame him – even the firefighters seated around them seem unsure of what to do. Other than disappear, which they quietly start doing, depositing their empty plates on the counter before slipping through the doors behind Carina’s back.

Except for Vic, who swoops in to lift Andrea off the table, cradling his head as she takes him into the lounge, away from the line of fire.

“All he will eat is ketchup! And chicken nuggets!” Carina finishes. “Che non è cibo. Come si può sopravvivere con il ketchup?” (That is not food. How would one survive on ketchup?)

“Okay,” Maya nods, recognizing the end of the onslaught of angered information. She gets up slowly, hands outstretched as though she’s surrendering.

Or approaching a wild animal.

Carina huffs, wiping at the hair that’s fallen across her forehead.

“Why don’t you feed him chicken nuggets and ketchup then,” Travis pipes up from the through the window in the lounge. There’s an audible thump and then an ow! as Vic apparently smacks him and then he disappears from the line of sight again.

Completely missing the glare that Carina throws in his direction. “We do not coddle the children!” she yells after him.

“Child,” Maya corrects quickly, “We don’t coddle the child.”

Hey! Do you have any must read Marina fics?

Yes! So many. It's honestly so hard to narrow it down because there's so many talented writers in the fandom and they all write incredible stuff. I'm not sure what you're looking for specifically but there's a lot of variety as well.

I'll name some that are different themes/genres from different writers but honestly any writer I mention you should check out all their work because it's all great!

Canon:

There's a lot of great one shots based off of things going on in Season 6 currently (wrackwonder has a lot based on specific episodes) but:

In the Deep by AzureInk is more in depth and will wreck you emotionally in the best way so it's a must. So good.

Serendipity by @englishstrawbie - fills in the blanks from the start of Marina's relationship until the end of Season 4 and it's one of my faves. Definite must!

AU:

Faces in the Hall by @ladstars - Maya & Carina go to the same high school and build a connection that turns into more as time goes on. It's lovely and has a sequel that takes them all the way to adults with twist and turns in between. You Can't Be Missed If You Never Go Away is the second part!

What Our Hearts Must Know by @amaltheazwrites - Soulmate AU that brings all the feels ❤️ so good.

On second thought, I may choose this Scandinavian studies minor. It has a study abroad option and, even better, no math!

On a serious note, I'm looking into these courses for the minors they have, and it's a mess. The business minor requires one of the math courses in order to take the needed intro course, and all of the math courses are full for the semester.

And the environmental studies minor requires a chemistry prereq...

Which also requires one of the math courses that are all full.

I guess I'll wait until the business department faculty contacts me back about whether or not one of the courses I had taken previously would count, but if not, then Scandinavian studies it is! Idk, maybe this is a sign that my endeavor to move to Norway is the right path!

TITLE(S):  Usually Miss Harmony except in some verses where she’s Officer Halcyon in her police verse, or Doctor Halcyon in her physician’s assistant verse. In verses where she is married, it becomes Mrs.

AGE: Default age is 21 years, but it’s verse dependent.

SPECIES: Human

When her hair is pulled back or up, she has framing locks loose.

SKIN: Tan with her burn scars from her right shoulder down her arm having darker pigment.

POSTURE: She tries to stand and sit up straight, but tends to slouch when sitting too long. Sometimes she crosses one leg over the other when she sits, but never does that when she’s wearing a dress or skirt.

VOICE: Harmony has a girlish voice and is usually soft-spoken but is louder when she’s excited, angry, scared, or upset. She is very expressive, and her voice would reveal that. Revised Traits of a Highly Sensitive Person

Or, a perspective that allowed me to see the importance in the term and recognize myself as an HSP.

Note: The traits listed are not universally applicable to all highly sensitives.

You have an internal monitor on how you're feeling (not necessarily emotionally or even physically), at all times. You just have a sense of an internal state of harmony that you prefer to maintain, or else you get highly disregulated and destabilized.

Your idea of fun is different from the norm. You might seem to play things safe or be cautious in comparison to others. You probably avoid staying out late, getting wasted, or intense activities in areas where you can't easily return to a spot of comfort (eg. rollercoaster rides).

You're very immersed in your inner world. You just are. You've never been otherwise and you will always be this way. You're pretty oblivious to what happens in the outside world and find it annoying to keep up with.

You're not able to tolerate anyone who is rude, disingenuous, mean, deceitful, spiteful, vengeful, or mean-spirited. This does not mean that you can not have mean-spirited traits yourself (any human may if provoked). Their presence alone is uncomfortable.

You probably have (had) poor boundaries with others. This may mean your boundaries are either too soft OR too rigid. You have this and other self-defense tactics (or a lack thereof) due to your sensitivity.

You may be quiet often, appear shy, or have a hard time sharing yourself with just anyone - thus seeming as a reclusive or reserved person.

You feel that you are not able to cope with the pace everyone else goes at. Conventional career paths, schooling courses, and socialization norms can be overwhelming. And very stupid, not to mention. You probably see behind the matrix easily.

You might have a need to retreat from social situations after some time, or else, check out mentally and experience at least subtle states of dissociation as a way of preventing overwhelm.

You may be drawn towards alternative healing and health (herbalism, flower essences, reiki, mindfulness, yoga, etc). Many conventional medical procedures, screenings, or treatments can be very traumatizing for HSPs in particular. Alternative healing methods usually tend towards more gradual, subtle, and consistent results. This is very perfect for HSPs.

You easily move to a state of frazzle or distress (heightened arousal) if you just neglect your needs. So you may have dealt with being on edge, burnt out, adrenal fatigue, insomnia, chronic fatigue, PTSD, or something similar.

You appreciate the internet, but you might not care much for social media. You probably don't post much or share much of yourself on them. Intimate connections > the world wide web

You're very connected OR disconnected with your body's senses. But it's evident that you're easily overwhelmed by the external world regardless (eg. sensitive stomach/appetite, migraines, allergies).

You might struggle with self-love particularly in accepting your qualities of being high-maintenance (nervous system-wise) or "wired" differently.

Creating relaxation for your nervous system has to be very continuous (it's not a part-time job). So, you may appear rigid, fastidious, or like you always have it together...but you're just making sure that you're not uneasy.

Connected to nature, slow living, hygge, off-the-grid living, and being alone are more your domain. You probably identify with misunderstood loners or social outcasts in stories for this reason.

You're good at loving the unloved. You see the redeeming qualities in widely disliked people and things much easier than others. They're probably some of your favorite people/things.

You may have been afraid of your emotions and repressed them ad infinitum, thinking they will be too intense for you to bear.

You're really interested in the expansion of your consciousness. Inner work, mysticism, seeking metaphysical mysteries, and spirituality were a part of your life before you ever knew what they were.
