To the end of the line.
Captain America: the Winter Soldier, the Movie Poster We Should Have Gotten (Redbubble)
Inspiration and non-titled version below cut:
No title version:
Tumblr media
This is my magnum opus! A GIANT photo manipulation of at least 12 source images, painstakingly taken apart and put back together in Photoshop. at one point this beast had over 80 layers! I am surprised my computer didn't crash!
Inspired by the Iron Man 3 and Thor: the Dark World posters wherein the love interest is posed like a Damsel in Distress.
Since Bucky IS CapSteve's damsel in all 3 movies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ my original digital sketch (featuring my FAVORITE Bucky drawing OF ALL TIME by @evankart!) and first attempt at a digital drawing using adobe illustrator (to be fair to 2021 me, I had been using illustrator less than a year at that point and would have just done it in Photoshop originally if it wasn't a project for one of my Graphic Design college classes) I used it for a magazine spread in my capstone (My paper was about queerbaiting in the MCU click to read on Ao3!) See the rest of the illustrations here!
Tumblr media
When i saw the @catws-anniversary event, i KNEW I had to do it! Prompts: Devotion, Reunion, Schoolyard and battlefield, Favorite Stucky scene (missing scene lol)

Steve-Centric Stucky Fics: 5 Recs + 1 TBR
Tumblr media
As promised, here is the rec list for Steve/Bucky fics with a focus on Steve-centric stories—all of them not EG-compliant, as requested. It's not quite as long as my usual rec lists for two reasons:
(1) I'm still sick and I can barely sit up straight, so please forgive the brevity of the list, and
(2) I deliberately wanted to include exclusively fics that were written in 2022 and 2023 to shine a spotlight on a few of the many wonderful writers and artists who are still creating absolutely fantastic works for the Stucky ship and who deserve to be read just as widely and passionately as older works in the fandom. Recency bias, but make it positive!
So without further ado, here are five Steve-centric Stucky recs and one more fic that I can't wait to get to:
1. say it soft and it's almost like praying by Somanywords | 41K, M
Author's summary: Natasha says, “Look, whatever the truth is about you, we have no way of really knowing the Winter Soldier's intentions. He’s not all there, he’s not who you remember. He’s a hot mess, Steve.”
“Why does everyone think that?” Steve says, and he’s nearly yelling, but not quite, because he doesn’t need to, not when they’re so close. “Why does everyone keep saying he’s a mess—have you seen me?"
Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. I literally finished this fic about 15 minutes ago, so I haven't even left a comment yet. I'm still processing, you could say. The author tagged this with "just another post catws fic (but by me)"—and yes, that's what you get. All the usual ingredients are here, but the joy of TWS canon divergence is of course in the endless possibilities of how these well-known ingredients are used, re-arranged, and re-imagined as something new, exciting, and often much more satisfying than in canon. This fic excels at all three and is an absolute joy from start to finish.
2. Daybreak by BonkyBornes, art by PottersPink | 9K, NR
Author's summary: They called it project Rebirth because the person was supposed to be reborn, like a phoenix from the ashes. Steve was supposed to be the phoenix. He was supposed to rise from the ashes of his old body, he was supposed to leave behind his deafness and his limp and the scoliosis that bent his entire body to the left. He was supposed to leave behind everything that held him back.
In the end, the only thing that left was the only thing that mattered.
Shrinkyclinks canon-divergent AU. What if Project Rebirth didn't go right...but it didn't go entirely wrong either? A story about ghosts but not a ghost story. Or maybe something else entirely? Steve fights his body and time and the memories that keep haunting him. Beautifully written, with gorgeous art by PottersPink that perfectly complements the story.
3. Exhale by seapigeon, art by dudewhereismypie | 15K, M
Author's summary: After the Chitauri invasion, Steve parts ways with SHIELD, unsure if he can trust an agency that tried to deceive him and built weapons from the Tesseract.
He finds himself alone in an unfamiliar future, penniless, not even legally alive. Fortunately, he knows how to survive. Steve Rogers is used to getting by on his own.
The thing is, he doesn't have to.
Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A fic that asks the question: What if, after the battle of New York, Steve had told SHIELD a polite but firm 'No'? Follow him as he strikes out on his own, finds an apartment, a job, and friends, figures out life in the 21st century...and of course falls in love!
4. Preberseeschießen by Ginny_Potter | 6K, T
Author's summary: Bucky breathes out and shoots. The bullet hits water… and there it is, the zapping sound of paper tearing.
The light turns on and off three times. Third circle. Just a lick out of bullseye. The Howlies explode in cheers.
Or, the Howling Commandos play a shooting game with the Austrian Resistance and Steve has lots of unresolved feelings about himself, his new body, and his changing relationship with Bucky. In other words, comrades are comrades, angst looms, and Steve feels.
Wartime fic. Would you like to read some excellent gay angst full of yearning and unresolved tension, peppered with interesting and wonderfully specific historical details and Howlies camaraderie? Would you like to get your heart crushed a little? Yes? Here you go. And if this makes you feel too sad by the end of it and you crave a bit of a happier resolution, just jump straight into a fistfull of dollars (5K, E) by the same author, which is not intended as a companion piece or even set in the same universe, but it works just as if it were. (Look at me sneaking in extra recs.)
5. Not In The Answer But The Question by aimmyarrowshigh, art by PottersPink | 27K, T
Author's summary: It rankles that his drink was made before he even got a chance to order it. What if he wanted a change? What if he were adventurous and bold? What if he tried something new?
---
Or, Steve Rogers shakes up his gray daily routine in 2014 by going back home to Vinegar Hill. To his surprise, the Jewish deli he used to frequent with Arnie is still standing.
And Steve's whole life changes again.
Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A lost and lonely Steve tries to figure out who he was, is and most importantly, wants to be in this new century he's found himself in that is both terrifying and full of possibilities. Told in vignettes (I did not count, but I believe all of them are exactly 100 word drabbles) that perfectly illustrate the fragmented mind and life of its protagonist and his experience of constantly shifting and adjusting between past and present. A story about identity, memory, self-acceptance, and finding the courage to love and let yourself be loved. And food. So much amazing food!
+ 1 TBR: Operation: Gros Michel by SquadOfCats | 358K, E
Author's summary: “It starts with bananas. Of course, it's not really about the bananas. Just like a camel isn't bothered by one single straw, just like a dam doesn't break because of one extra drop. Obviously, Steve's mental breakdown isn't about bananas.”
Steve is overwhelmed and hanging by a thread, doing his best to take care of Bucky while still deeply traumatized himself. He finally has a breakdown over the stupidest of things: bananas. So Bucky takes care of him.
In which Steve learns to surf, Bucky becomes a gardener, and they both begin to heal.
Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. No, I did not make a mistake, the word count for this story really does come in at an impressive (or intimidating, you decide) 358,225 words! Which is the only reason why I haven't read it yet. I do want to make time for this asap because the snippets I've read so far were very intriguing and everything I've heard about it from people who have finished it, sounds absolutely amazing. So, this is the wild card pick!
Happy reading! <3

“"I think platonic is the word. I think we don't see enough platonic, healthy, beautiful relationships between men in TV. And I think that is why that relationship was so beautiful and disarming to people, is because how often do you see two men being able to open up and actually speak about their feelings? And I think that that was something in that first episode, that Mobius was able to do really beautifully. He was basically saying, "I see you, I see the pain that you're in. I see the bad things that you did. That's ok. I'm not judging. Let's talk and find a way to you becoming the best version of yourself," and I think that was exciting." — Loki Exec. Producer on Lokius ship
the amount of no-homo-ing marvel studios does w/ every project is beyond me 😭 the “can’t we see healthy friendships” excuse only works so many times guys (did this w/ stucky, sambucky, carolmaria, etc)
"we don't see enough platonic, healthy, beautiful relationships between men in tv" AS IF MARVEL HASN'T BEEN RUINING EVERY SINGLE PLATONIC HEALTHY BEAUTIFUL RELATIONSHIP THEY CAN GET THEIR HANDS ON SO PPL DON'T CALL THEM GAY...................................................speechless

This week is my first ever Stucky (or any Marvel/Bucky Barnes-related) event and I'm SO EXCITED to share my art/writing with all of you. First up is this lovely piece written by SquadOfCats for my art with Steve giving Bucky a bubble bath. This fic will both make you laugh and tug right at your heartstrings. The antics Bucky gets up to are lovely to witness - especially because it means he's being selfish/doing things to get what he secretly wants, and that makes me happy because Bucky Barnes deserves nice things. Give the fic a read - you won't be disappointed <3

Peter is teleported to Gotham after the events of NWH. A vague smooshing of Tom Holland Spider-Man and the Peter Parker from the most recent Spider-Man games.
So I've never really written a fic like this before, I've never really been a Marvel girly outside of like, being a Stucky shipper. But after stumbling across a few Peter Parker in Gotham fics, I thought I'd try my hand at it. I'd really appreciate it if I could get some feedback on it. It's going to have all the self-indulgent tropes, because that's what I enjoy writing, just to warn you straight off if that's not your cup of tea.
Small excerpt from the fic:
But instead of stepping through a portal normally, like Peter would have thought, he found himself suddenly submerged in water. Though, it might not have been water at all, considering it was glowing bright green, burned slightly against his skin and felt much heavier than regular water. Peter swam as hard as he could, trying to reach the top, as his chest burned at the sudden lack of oxygen. After some struggle, given the weight of his clothing and his go-bag, he finally made it, breaching the surface of the pool, gasping for breath. Normally, he could hold his breath for quite some time because of the spider bite. But it only worked if he knew to take a deep breath in the first place.
Peter flopped onto the hard stone ground beside the pool of glowing water, the room or cave really, was illuminated by green light emanating from the pool. There looked to be torches around the cave that had long since burned out. They didn’t look like they’d been lit in hundreds of years. Groaning as he stumbled to his feet, dragging his now waterlogged gym bag with him, Peter tried to take stock of himself. He was dripping wet, obviously, but something else felt… odd.
He wasn’t wearing his Iron Spider suit, and his under clothes seemed to be hanging off him, as if several sizes too big. He looked down and quickly examined his body. He was much smaller than he remembered being, that was for sure. He walked back to the pool, just to try and check out his reflection, and saw his thirteen-year-old self reflected back at him, sans the dorky glasses and haircut. The year he had been bitten by the spider that altered his DNA and gave him his enhanced abilities. He swallowed harshly, his gaze barely registering a weird white streak in his fringe, and stepped away from the pool.

Hi, again. 👋
I found the post you were talking about. The stan's account was deactivated, but yeesh. 😬 Nice replies to them, btw.
The stan that bashed on me said I was being misogynistic, even though I'm a black woman who just wanted to see another black character get their chance to shine.
Hell, it's not just the shows and movies (I think this all started with Endgame). It's also the Steve Rogers musical too. I don't know if you know about it, but Disney made the musical real, and it really did Sam and Bucky dirty.
Sam isn't even in it. Maybe he was mentioned once, but the musical showed an image of Sam as Captain America. As for Bucky, his scene from CA:TFA, where he saved pre-serum Steve, was given to Peggy instead. Bucky was mentioned once, and the musical tried to justify Steve's ending from Endgame. All for this ship.
And, frankly, I don't hate Peggy, I'm just more annoyed that other characters get shoved aside as well as this great dynamic that Steve and Bucky had, while she and her ship with Steve has been getting propped up more and more. But, seeing some of your and the others' posts, I get why you guys don't like her.
Girl, don’t get me started on the abomination that was Rogers the musical. It could have been glorious, it had so much potential, but once again Bucky’s role in Steve’s story was given to Peggy, and Sam wasn’t even there!
I feel like Marvel feels the need to tone down Stucky or their friendship overall because it was just too powerful. We all remember the hashtag that begged Marvel to make Stucky Canon, #givecaptainamericaaboyfriend. They just couldn’t let it happen, not to a main and important character like Steve, god forbid. And so ever since civil war Stucky has always had little to no scenes together no matter how well established it was in previous projects. All their scenes and dynamic were given to Peggy, their friendship was toned down, Steve’s whole ending happened. It just feels like Stucky is so menacing to Marvel that the only way to stop us is by destroying Steve, Bucky and their relationship.
I mean, Steve is given no justice in his ending and in all the other projects he appeared in. Bucky went from a victim and prisoner of war to someone who must make amends for things that were beyond his control. And the depth of their friendship was toned down and reduced every time Peggy was involved. And then they wonder why many people in the fandom dislike Peggy or why the whole Rogers the musical initiative flopped the second it went beyond Hawkeye.
Like, even if you don’t ship Stucky you can tell that they care for each other, and you can tell there was a shift after people actually wanted Marvel to take action and do something about this dynamic. Steve can’t get even one episode as his own character because Peggy must be there. Bucky had more luck, but still… and let’s not even talk about Sam, his only appearance was as a zombie!
In another post of mine I ranted about how bothered I was that Peggy was inserted in the 1602 storyline, and i haven’t changed my mind. It would have been so nice to give Steve one episode about himself, about his dynamic with his best friend and about the relationship with himself and his fellow avengers. But no, Peggy must be there too, and for no good reason as well.
I feel like Marvel trying to erase pre-existing relationships to have Peggy shine only results in fans turning their back on Marvel and hiding in fanfiction or whatever piece of media that can actually bring justice to the characters. Once someone on Tumblr said “you gave us the characters, but once you mess them up they’re not yours anymore. You don’t understand and respect them, therefore you don’t deserve them.” and I couldn’t agree more, which is why I am currently reading and writing fanfiction rather than buying into everything marvel gives us.
Peggy was the love interest with more screen time even before what if and all that jazz, she had her own show! And I fear that the day Marvel will realize that pushing a reimagined Nazi turned Mary Sue into every single what if episode where she can fit instead of enhancing the characters that are actually relevant in-universe it will be too late.
Sorry about the rant, I get carried away when it’s about my boys lol

Consider:
A modern stucky pairing acting on out a humiliation scene that involves public speaking. Like, yes, this is crack, but treat it seriously with me for a moment...
Tumblr media
Bucky sets up the scene complete with a presentation projected onto a blank wall at their local dungeon and an audience of their fellow kinksters--in this scene, big sub Steve has to speak about what turns him on. There are pictures of him engaging in these activities, each more and more exposing, and charts (that may or may not just be bullshit, random numbers) comparing each kinky activity to the others, ranking how hot they were and how much he enjoyed it, taking into account how deep he went into subspace, how many times he orgasmed, how long the marks and/or soreness lasted (if there was any), etc.
Throughout the scene, every time Steve says the word, "uh," "um," or otherwise stutters, and each time he breaks eye contact from the audience--looking down at the floor, staring at the presentation for too long, whatever--he has to remove an item of clothing. He starts out fully clothed, not totally inappropriate to go out into the real world in, just suggestive, tight, leave-nothing-to-the-imagination pants, a nice shirt, a jacket, and a collar, but as the layers are stripped away, it becomes more and more inappropriate. Steve is blushing more and more, the flush spreading rapidly from just spots of color high on his cheeks to all the way down his chest and belly. Eventually, when Steve is stripped totally bare, that's when the whispers start...
Under his stuttering, choked-with-embarrassment words, there are currents of people commenting on, aw, would you look at that, he's blushing so much! Or, he's quite the freak, isn't he? He gets off on that? All of that? Or, really, that's hot to him? Huh. Or, oh, cute, look at how hard his little dick is from all this! He's just talking about it, and he's throbbing! Or, God, look at how badly he's blushing, poor thing! Or, at least, he's embarrassed about all this... he really should be.
Steve wants to explode. He wants to cry. He wants to touch himself.
Really, fuck, he wants Bucky to stand from where he's reclined cooly in his chair, happily watching the squirming, blushing, stammering show with a grin painted sadistically across his handsome face, prowl toward him from the crowd, and come to a stop, towering over him in front of all these people. He wants the bigger, thicker man to put a hand around the back of his neck, barely having to scruff him before he crumbles, weak at the knees.
He wants Bucky's touch to make his ears ring, so he drowns out all of the voices. But either way, Steve knows they're talking about him, they're talking about his cock, they're talking about how needy he is, about turned on he is, about how freaky he is, how weird, and, and--
Slowly, Steve realizes that he has stopped talking completely.
Bucky clears his throat amongst the looming silence, his smirk only widening. Bastard.
Someone laughs when Steve fails to do anything but stand in place, helpless and, surely, looking spacy and dumb.
Then, suddenly, everyone is chuckling at him, some people more shameless than others--all out laughing or snickering softly.
And, oh, it's all Steve can do to stay standing against the wave of mortification and shame that crashes into him. Against the torrent of rushing, sharp pleasure, he doesn't have enough time to even bite his lip to stifle the pathetic whimper that gets punched from deep in his gut. His eyes want to roll back into his head, it's so fucking embarrassing.
His little sound makes them all laugh more. Laughing at him.
Steve's eyes water, he's really going to cry. Or, shit, oh, God, with a full-body shiver, Steve realizes that he's about to cum.
How long has he been dripping for? Standing in front of this crowd, red enough to imitate a stop sigh from his head all the way down to his belly, squirming from foot to foot, squeezing his thighs together like he has to piss but doesn't have permission to go, stuttering over every word no matter how easy or simple, panting because he just can't keep air in his lungs, palms sweaty, and dripping onto the floor? Jesus Christ. He's a mess.

I'm sorry if this is an odd question. I'm new to the Steve/Bucky fandom and only recently started reading fics relating to them. How come most fics tend to favor Peggy and write her to be a sympathetic character? Most of the fandom that I've interacted with agree that Peggy isn't a good person (SHIELD and Hydra as well as her behavior with Steve in CFA) and wouldn't be a good match for Steve. I've loved all the fics for the love b/w Steve/Bucky but the sympathetic writing of Peggy has irked me
Thanks for the ask!
I came into fandom pretty late so I missed a lot of that, but I’m told Peggy has always been pretty popular in the Stucky fandom.
I think her popularity comes from a number of reasons — 1) lack of other female characters at the time, 2) easy to project onto, 3) a reluctance to tackle her negative traits.
At the time when Stucky’s popularity exploded, there weren’t a lot of female characters in the MCU. There were Pepper and Jane, both of whom were passive watchers and “civilian counterparts” to the main character's heroic enterprise. Peggy was a rare Phase 1 love interest that seemed to be present and at least somewhat handy with a gun. People were more forgiving of unfavourable character moments — and just coming from the movies alone, you could bend the narrative to ignore most of those unfavourable moments.
Which leads me to the second point, which I think is the most important one. The vagueness with which Peggy is written makes her an incredibly useful “blank” character to project onto. Firstly, her mannerisms are forceful and assertive, and the superhero genre target audience is one who likes to watch things being resolved by fights. As I said above, at the time there really isn't any other female character (apart from Nat) for the female audience who likes action heroes. Secondly, Peggy and Nat form the madonna-whore dichotomy (especially with Whedon’s characterisation), and a lot of people would prefer to project onto the fandom madonna than the whore. Thirdly, she has very little character traits within the movies apart from “strong-willed” and maybe “ambitious”, which gives a lot of flexibility to how writers can play with her character. Fourth, the fact that her appearances in the movies only ever occur in Steve’s company (except the later cameos) gives a misattribution of narrative proximity, with a lot of fans believing (especially if they haven’t revisited the source in years) that she was a more important narrative force than she actually was. But that same narrative proximity is appealing if you want to project onto a female character who can participate in Steve’s adventures and you don’t like Nat or Sharon or an OC.
And the third point I think is the trickiest part. Does fandom misogyny exist? Of course it does, especially in the MCU. But misogyny is also flung around as an accusation against fans who make genuine critiques of a character or want to write a nuanced female character that acknowledges her negative traits. Someone once dumped a 1500 word rant in my comments because I omitted Peggy from a Stucky meta, so you can imagine how much her rabid fans would arc up if you are actually critical.
Besides, writing a nuanced character takes effort and planning and a lot of hard work. I know for myself unless I plan to tackle Peggy as a fully-fledged character, I'd either omit her from the story or give her a very minor role that is not overtly critical, because it's just not worth the effort of the argument in the notes.

FAVORITE STUCKY FICS | 47/100
Stuff Like Love by lambchop33
[Friends to lovers, 51 445 words, Explicit]
Summary:
Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers have been best friends since college. Bucky is perfectly happy with this until they get involved in a home remodeling project, start spending more and more time together, and he realizes just how attracted to Steve he really is. When a new man pops up in Steve’s life, Bucky fears he’s too late. He supposes the mature thing to do would be to be happy for his friend during his new budding romance. But hey, endlessly pining for him in secret until you explode is almost the same thing, right?

hello me again!! I absolutely loved seeing more of the possessive!stucky verse and if you could share the parts you have from them in modern day I would die of happiness 🫶🏽
Oh, I'm sorry, babe. I definitely saw your reblog/reply to that post and totally forgot to post the rest of what I have.
Here you go, the last of what I had written for the blood in my veins 'verse
It was going to be called learning to breathe again, which I thought was apt
----
If asked, Steve Rogers would say that the world ends on a dreary, snowy day in 1945 while he clings to the side of a train in the French Alps. It doesn’t begin again until 2014 when he stands under a bridge in Washington, D.C., surrounded by chaos and facing off with the world’s deadliest assassin.
It doesn’t matter that the world says, “who the hell is Bucky?”
It doesn’t matter that the world tries to kill him, just days later, on a helicarrier falling from the sky. It doesn’t matter that it’s his turn to fall or that he almost drowns.
The only thing that matters is his last sight before he goes into the water: familiar, beloved bright eyes staring at him in recognition.
Steve’s happy to die in that moment. It’s a good way to go if those eyes are the last thing he knows in this life.
*
The world - no, the entire fucking universe - pulls him out of the Potomac. Steve doesn’t remember it and there’s no proof of it but it’s irrelevant.
His name is Steve Rogers and if he’s in danger, Bucky Barnes is there.
That’s just the way things work.
*
“You don’t have to come,” Steve says, standing in a graveyard.
And he really doesn’t. Steve can do this on his own. He’s happy to do it on his own, if that’s what it takes. But Sam is one of the few people in this new world that he actually likes and he isn’t actually opposed to company.
“I know.” Sam smiles. “When do we start?”
*
They follow Bucky around the globe for months.
Most nights are spent in different beds, most weeks are spent in at least two different countries. Sometimes there’s a backtrack and sometimes they go to places Steve has never even heard of.
In all the time they spend chasing him, neither of them catch sight of a single hair on Bucky Barnes’ head.
With every dead end and every dropped lead, Sam frowns and glances at him nervously. No matter what this new century thinks of him, Steve isn’t clueless; he knows that Sam is looking for the cracks.
Sam, the good friend that he is, is waiting for Steve to fall apart. To breakdown with grief or frustration or whatever emotion is a normal response to a situation like this one. He’s waiting for anger and tears and despair and he doesn’t quite understand that none of that is coming. None of that will ever come.
Because Sam is a good friend but he’s only ever known Steve Rogers broken. He’s looking for cracks, has been since Steve woke up in the hospital after Project Insight fell and Bucky disappeared, because he doesn’t understand.
The cracks were already there and they’re finally starting to heal.
*
In the sixth month, Steve wakes up to a draft in his room. The window is open and the curtains billow in the breeze, bringing with it the scent of the sea. There’s no one in his room with him and everything appears untouched save for a scrap of paper taped to his shield.
It looks like it came from the bottom of a receipt and on the back of it are three words.
Go home, it says at the top in thick block letters. The word please is written underneath, smaller, like an afterthought.
The handwriting is both familiar and foreign and Steve smiles quietly to himself, caressing the note gently.
*
“So we’re just giving up?”
Surprisingly, Sam isn’t upset. He is, instead, bewildered and very, very curious. They’re sitting at a cafe in the airport, passing time until their flight boards. Steve bought the tickets before Sam ever opened his eyes that morning and despite what his friend might think, he feels happy with this decision.
It’s hard to explain why he’s smiling, so he hides it behind his coffee cup.
“It’s not giving up,” he says truthfully. “Bucky asked us to go.”
Sam tilts his head, considering Steve with appraising eyes.
“It’s just not what I expected from you,” he says after a moment. “You’ve been acting very til the ends of the earth, if you know what I mean. Didn’t think you’d let him call the shots.”
Steve snorts.
Bucky’s been calling the shots for as long as Steve’s needed him to.
*
They land in Washington, D.C. at night. The airport is still buzzing with activity but it’s quieter, different than it was the morning they left. Nobody glances at them twice as they loiter around baggage claim for their luggage and Steve is grateful; he’s too tired to put on his Captain America smile.
Just as the conveyor belt starts filling with new luggage, his phone buzzes in his pocket. Fishing it out, he sees a text from an unknown number.
Thank you.
Warmth starts in his chest and spreads outwards, relaxing him just a little. He still feels tension throbbing inside of him, a cord that’s been stretching since 1945, but in that moment, it isn’t so unbearable.
Steve doesn’t bother replying - Bucky probably tossed the burner phone as soon as he pressed send - but he doesn’t delete the text message, either. Instead, he saves it to his phone, where he can look at it any time he needs.
“What is it?” Sam asks, making Steve look away from the words. He realizes he’s been staring at his phone for several minutes now; Sam’s already gotten their bags.
“Nothing,” Steve says with a smile. He pockets his phone again. “Just happy to be home.”
*
Life settles into a routine again. He and Sam run in the mornings, have breakfast in a cafe somewhere between Sam’s apartment and his. When the Avengers need him, which isn’t often, he helps out and when the remnants of SHIELD need him, which is more often, he helps them, too.
Natasha would be proud of how well he’s taking to the ways of her trade. He and Sam are soldiers first, good in a fight, but they learn the art of blending in; moving through a crowd without anyone ever remembering they were there. It’s new, this tactic. A freshly-bought pair of shoes that he hasn’t broken in yet but once he does, he has no doubt of the comfort they’ll provide.
It definitely makes their jobs easier, at any rate.
There’s not a lot of big battles for Captain America anymore but there are more covert operations. Steve spends most of his time after coming back helping ex-SHIELD agents move through the city without being caught. There’s one last base in DC but its stretched too thin as is with half its agents gone and the other half focused on rebuilding. Besides, not everyone wants to stay with the organization that housed HYDRA for so many years.
So Steve does what he can. He sets up new safehouses, stashes money and weaponry all around the city, sets up a network of help for anyone who needs it.
It isn’t just their own government hunting down SHIELD and no matter what he thought when it still stood, he won’t leave these people to fend for themselves. Not when it’s partially his fault that they’re on the run at all.
He tells a SHIELD agent this when she asks and her eyes widen.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” she says and then blushes, like she just remembered who she was talking to. “You’re the reason we’re alive at all, Captain. A lot more people would be dead if it weren’t for you.”
It’s the Captain rather than the reassurance that Steve focuses on. His smile, when it comes, feels brittle. He doesn’t bother responding and instead, hands her a slip of paper.
“Only stay there for a night,” he says. “Burn the paper when you’ve memorized the address. Make sure to dye your hair and put on different clothes.”
She nods and then takes him by surprise, hugging him fiercely for just a moment before pulling back. Her face is an even darker shade of red but she ignores her own embarrassment, straightening her spine and squaring her shoulders. When she meets his gaze again, she is every bit the SHIELD agent instead of the scared civilian that had been in her place moments before.
“Thank you,” she says. “For everything.”
Steve shakes his head. “No need for thanks,” he tells her. It feels mechanical, wrong, when he puts a hand on her shoulder. He’s still not used to touching people or having them touch him. “You’ll be fine, Agent. Just keep moving.”
She smiles at him and then disappears into the crowd.
*
A month after they abandon the search for Bucky, the gifts start arriving. Trinkets from France, Germany, Italy, Russia. There’s at least one every month and always from a place they know has been hit by the Winter Soldier.
“This is weird, you know that, right?” Sam says one morning. He turns the tiny Eiffel Tower over in his hands as Steve flips through a brochure for the Louvre. “He’s not even trying to hide the fact that those hits are him.”
Steve shrugs. “Why should he? He’s hunting down HYDRA, same as the rest of us.”
He plucks the Tower from Sam’s hands, placing it and the brochure on a shelf with previous ones. Bucky’s gifts hold a place of honor in Steve’s home, proudly displayed in the living room where Steve can see them any time he wants to. Sam doesn’t know it but the scrap of receipt holding Bucky’s first note is tucked under the music box from Russia. When he’s alone, Steve pulls it out sometimes just to look at it; just to see that handwriting again.
“Steve,” Sam says. “He’s a mentally fragile assassin that just spent the last seventy years being tortured, brainwashed, and forced to kill for a scary secret cult. He needs time to heal, not more death.”
Sighing, Steve turns to face his friend. “Did you ever think that maybe it’s helping him heal?” He asks.
“Yes, I have, actually.” Sam shakes his head. “But that’s not a healthy coping mechanism.”
Steve shrugs. “Lotta things in this world aren’t healthy, Sam,” he says. “Doesn’t mean people stop doing them.”
*
Bucky’s fifth gift and the first for that month - three months after Steve came home - is an expensive set of drawing pencils and three sketchbooks. It’s also the first gift to include a note.
I remembered this, it says. No signature.
Trembling fingers run lightly first over the note and then the gifts themselves. Steve lets a harsh breath, his eyes burning and his chest aching. He’s glad that he’s alone for this gift, that no one is there to see him shaking apart like this.
He opens the pencils slowly, reverently, and when he holds one in his hand, he feels a little more tension leak out of him. The rest of the day is spent ignoring the world in favor of drawing. His first few pictures are shaky, both from his own emotion and his unpracticed hand, but the more time he spends buried in his sketchbook - his sketchbook - the smoother things become.
His hand is cramping by the time the sun sets and his latest drawing has tear stains ruining his perfect lines and he feels, for the first time since 1945, like Steven Grant Rogers.
*
“I didn’t know you were an artist,” Sam says when he sees the art littering Steve’s living room.
Steve snorts. “Just another thing the history books left out,” he replies, bitter.
That pitying expression is back on Sam’s face and Steve decides to ignore it in favor of getting the lines of Bucky’s face just right.
*
The gifts continue to come and Steve’s shelf becomes an entire bookcase of trinkets. The Avengers are called on to save the world from an artificial intelligence named Ultron. They barely make it out alive but somehow, they all do make it.
Natasha watches him closely after the battle. They’re all undressing in Stark’s version of a team locker room, unconcerned with things like nudity when they’re all too busy minding cuts and bruises.
“What is it?” Steve asks her when he’s tired of the stares.
“You’re different,” she says. Her mouth softens into her version of a smile. “You don’t try to make the sacrifice play anymore.”
She doesn’t ask, so he doesn’t tell her that he finally has something to live for again. He suspects she already knows, anyways.
*
It’s been almost a month since the last trinket when one of their safe houses is compromised. He and Sam arrive on the scene too late but miraculously, no one is dead. The two ex-agents that were staying there are sitting on the porch, wide-eyed and shaking. Sam kneels down in front of them with kind eyes and a soothing voice. Steve goes inside to check out the house.
Broken furniture litters multiple rooms, one of the beds is upended,  the toilet in the guest bathroom is split in two. One hell of a fight took place and it seemed to span the entire house. In the living room, there are bodies piled one on top of the other; unconscious not dead. The only thing surprising about this is that not all of them are part of the strike team that hit the house.
“He was here,” Sam says from behind him. He comes to stand shoulder to shoulder with Steve, staring down at the bodies. “The agents said he’s the only reason they’re still alive.”
Steve smirks at him. “Still think it’s an unhealthy coping mechanism?”
“Yes.” When Steve looks at him, Sam holds up his hands. “Hey, man, I’m the first to admit that I’m grateful. But this still isn’t healthy.”
Rolling his eyes, Steve gestures at the two plain-clothed people. “Did they say where these two came from?”
“Yeah, Barnes left ‘em.” He gives Steve an unimpressed look. “Said something about it being a present.”
Oh.
Steve smiles, looking away from Sam’s piercing gaze. His trinkets are getting bigger.
*
It takes a few hours to get the HYDRA operatives secured in the DC base and to elicit a promise for whatever information is gleaned from them. He doesn’t know if he trusts the agent who does the promising but Steve will come back if he needs to. At least two of the prisoners were specifically meant for him, anyways.
When he gets home, Steve finds a pile of crushed metal and wiring piled onto his coffee table. It takes him a moment to realize what they are but when he does, he smiles; they’re bugs from all around his apartment.
Next to them is a note that reads: out with the old.
The words are very specific. Bucky doesn’t do anything uncalculated and Steve is sure that’s truer now than it was during the war. He begins to search the apartment but doesn’t have to get very far before he’s proved right. On the bottom of the Eiffel Tower statue, there’s a listening device.
And where there’s one, there’s dozens.
Steve puts the statue back without removing the bug and relaxes a tiny, tiny bit more.
“In with the new,” he says quietly, warmed by the thought that Bucky will hear him.

Now I HAVE to write it, guys. It's no longer 'haha'-optional! Please enjoy a naughty mini-fic about this hilarious comic strip. It's very short but the Stucky portion is *implied.*
Dirty Doodle, a steve rogers x artist!reader drabble
Tumblr media
"That's..." Steve looks vaguely gray and sick to his stomach, confusion pinching his brow together, "it's lovely, sweetheart."
Half of the fun is how uncomfortable your adorable Steve gets in sexual situations, and innuendo is just whipped cream and the cherry on top of his glorious body.
Bucky pops into the lounge for a snack. "Hey, guys."
You beam, tossing a wink over your shoulder since poor Steve is still beet red and struggling to decipher all the meaning in your sketch. You don't imagine Captain Rogers knows what 'tentacle porn,' 'monster fucking,' or 'hentai' are but, by god, it's fun to watch the wheels turn.
Then Bucky slows his approach to the counter, eyeing your sketchpad curiously.
"Is that..." Bucky shakes his head. "Never mind."
"I made a drawing of Steve," you announce proudly, "pretty good likeness, I think."
Bucky steps closer with a controlled expression. "Uh huh, that's definitely Stevie."
"My girl's got quite a talent for--" Steve gulps "--fantasy."
"Yeah," Bucky says with a shrug, rolling his tongue slowly across his bottom lip, "I think I've seen something similar..."
This revelation seems to crawl inside Steve's brain and nest. "Like handcuffs?" Steve squeaks.
Oh.
Oh, poor baby.
Today is the day you liquify Steve Rogers's brain...with the help of his friend.
"Well, if by handcuffs you mean the slippery appendages that then kinda--" you stick two fingers in your mouth "--sure. Like handcuffs."
"It's a very popular form of adult entertainment."
You tap your screen a few times. "I have more examples."
"Ooohhh," Bucky hisses, "he's not ready for that one, but dang that's a good one. Show him that. Stevie, look at your abs."
Steve grips his own sketch paper so hard it crinkles your likeness.
"I'm so glad you like it," you coo to Bucky. "I worked really hard on that one to get the angle just right. " The tablet is zoomed in on a very handsome, blond man with a clenched eight-pack, legs spread and out of frame. The detail on his testicles and completely erect penis is stunningly upsetting to your boyfriend.
Steve covers his eyes and whimpers.
"His balls are very sensitive," you fake whisper to Bucky behind the back of your hand.
"Always have been," Steve's best friend mutters back.
"I hate you." Steve buries his whole, hot face in his hands, elbows thunking against the breakfast table.
You remain undeterred and, in fact, inspired.
"There was this one position we tried last week--" you flick through your projects to find your drawing "--he got this desperate look on his face and I tried to--"
Your tablet shatters against the far wall, Steve standing above you with apologetic shock.
"I'm sorry. I love you so much. I'll...I'll buy you a new one."
He stalks off, holding his sketchpad and pencil roll in front of his crotch.
You wait until he's out of the room to meet Bucky's eye. "Stevie hasn't really gotten a grasp on the cloud yet," you say, pulling out your phone to open the art app, "but I've got a new strip I'm working on..."

i just saw a Stucky fanart of yours reblogged and I was wondering you still draw them??
HELL YEAH BABY
but......very slowly. RL has been throwing some real bummers at me and I haven't had the time and energy to draw as much as I usually do, so things are taking a while. I'm currently working on a Steve/Bucky art for D (👋🏻 !!) and it's for a mob!au fic. I'm going to try and have something ready for @cesperanza's 4 Minute Windowversary, the idea is there and it's a scene that I've always wanted to draw, now just gotta draw the art! Simple, right?
I am working on a little something for the @marvelartparty's latest project which is my first time drawing a mer-person!
I've also got some non!Stucky things lined up and in progress, for HallowRen's 4th Stephen King's IT prompt fest, @topguntrickortreat @steddiebang @strangerthingsreversebigbang and @iwtvbigbang, and something I recently completed for the New Edge Swords and Sorcery magazine but can't share yet 💜 so plenty to propel me into the new year. Wish me luck, friends

Operation Hindsight by @dcangstfiction I Chapters 24/24 I Completed Time Travel Fix-It, Bucky & Winter Soldier, Dehumanization, Captain America Sam, Alternate Timelines. BAMF Bucky Barnes
Bucky and Sam follow Jack Rollins through time from 2024 to 2014. Armed with knowledge of the future, Rollins wants to make sure Project Insight succeeds and Hydra rules the world. Bucky and Sam take on the challenge of stopping him and preserving their timeline. To do that, Bucky has to take on the Winter Soldier.
The Life, Death, and Resurrection of James Buchanan Barnes by @dcangstfiction I Chapters 35/35 I Completed Winter Soldier Bucky, Bucky Barnes, Recovering, Multiverse, Alternate Universe - Canon, BAMF Bucky, Time Travel, Amnesia, Epic Bromance, Whump
One day in 2012, Steve Rogers encounters a doppelgänger of himself who says three words that change everything: "Bucky is alive." This is a story about friendship that survives war, tragedy, and the devastation of time. It eases into things with a glimpse of two friends growing up together in the 20s and 30s. It then goes DARK (mind the tags). Darkness doesn't last forever, though. It yields to light. COMPLETE. Thanks to Fictitious for beta-reading!
Avalanche by MuzzledRavings I Chapters 19/19 I Completed Winter Soldier Bucky, Secret Identity, CEO Bucky Barnes, Bucky Barnes Remembers
When an experiment to improve the effectiveness of the Winter Soldier’s supersoldier serum is a little too successful, James regains his mind and his memories. After breaking free from HYDRA’s grasp, he finds the world is infested with HYDRA. Desperate for purpose, he puts the muzzle of the Winter Soldier back on to fight against his old tormentors from the shadows. When New York is attacked by aliens, the masked Avengers assemble. Not knowing who this new superhero team truly works for, James tries to find out while still hunting HYDRA. When it becomes clear to him that the Avengers can’t be trusted, he decides the best way to protect the world is to do it himself. So, the Winter Soldier founds a terrorist organization. Steve Rogers was adamant about finding his friend whom he thought had died decades earlier. Seeing Bucky behind the Winter Soldier's mask had stunned Steve. His mind had been reeling at the time, but now he was totally focused and committed to finding Barnes and helping him regain his identity. The Avengers team agrees to help him do just that.
paint me as the villain by TheCockyUndead I Chapters 21/21 I Completed Bucky & Clint Friendship, Manipulative Nick Fury, Blood and Torture, Past Torture, Steve & Tony
Out of everyone that could have captured the Winter Soldier, Fury hadn't expected to be the one to do so. But he didn't question it. After all, who was he to argue when a sharpened weapon was given to him?
Kill Strike Trigger by llethe I Chapters 17/17 I Completed Gen or Pre-Slash, Bucky/Natasha, Bucky & Sam, Bucky Remembers, Steve/Sharon implied, Hydra, World Travel, SHIELD
Rumlow actually smiles and crackles “our puppet, like you,” his voice so quiet and the words so distorted that Barnes just barely makes them out. He tells himself that they’re just words, and they’re just words designed to elicit an emotional response. It’s been just two months; there’s nothing HYDRA could have done by now, to make those words true. Right? A story of how far three people will go to bring Steve Rogers home -- and of how far HYDRA will go to bring home their Winter Soldier.

Pairings: Mob!Bucky Barnes x reader
Warnings: language, smut, angst, fluff, affair, cheating, violence.
Summary: Reader is the assistant to New York's most feared mob boss, James Buchanan Barnes. He had the picture-perfect life: status in the mob, friends, and beautiful wife. So why can't he keep his mind and eyes off of reader?
Authors Notes: tbh, I'm still trying to figure out a mob storyline, like how with my last story Bucky was creating serum. But now I'm at a loss as to what it could be for this one. feel free to send me some ideas!

“Bucky, stop it,” I giggled, feeling his presence behind me.
He hummed while burying his face deeper into my neck, fingers softly tickling my sides.
“You smell so good, doll.”
I sighed while setting down the papers I was trying to fax and leaned my head back against his shoulder while looking up at him.
“It’s called a shower. Soap, shampoo.”
Bucky smirked. “Naked, I know the drill.”
I smacked his chest while removing myself from his grasp and went back to my work.
It had been almost a month now of our affair and we had been so perfect now to get caught that the last thing I needed was for Steve or Sam to walk into work and see Bucky’s lips all over me. There were a few stolen glances, soft touches, and quick kisses in his office. We opted on fully seeing each other at my house, never thinking of going to his house.
Most nights were spent having sex and Bucky left right after but lately, it had been lounging on the couch and watching movies, Bucky still leaving afterwards. Every time he would go back to Natasha, my heart would chip away. I couldn’t be upset with him though because that was the price for our affair.
“Where are you going?” Bucky pouted while reaching for me.
I playfully smacked his hands away. “Someone gave me a list of things to get done today and I’ve barely made a dent.”
He shrugged. “You can take a break. Boss’ orders.”
“You have a meeting with Stark in twenty minutes, remember?” I reminded him.
“All I need is five,” his brows wiggled while he leaned against the wall, a smile pulling at the corners of his lips.
My abdomen burned with his suggestive tone but I merely shook my head. “Trust me, I know that’s all you need. But I’m not risking getting caught cause you’re horny.”
His bottom lip pouted and after a quick glance around, I took it between my own lips while ghosting a hand down his stomach and ghosted over his cock. Bucky groaned into the kiss.
“Fucking tease,” he hissed.
I gave him one last kiss. “Come by tonight and maybe I’ll finish what I started.”
“I’m holding you to that, doll.”
A loud squeal erupted from my throat when I walked past Bucky and felt him smack my ass quite hard and he simply shrugged then walked into his office.
“Hey, what is Stark even coming for anyway?”
I was sitting at my desk while Bucky sat at his.
“He’s funding the next project for Barnes Industries,” Bucky said.
“Which is?” I pried with a small smile.
He shook his head, however. “Not something you need to know, doll.”
In the way he ended the conversation, I knew it wasn’t best to try and get more information out of him. There were some things that Bucky wouldn’t tell me about his place in the mob and even if he said it was for my safety, I couldn't help but wonder what he was working on behind closed doors.
The rest of the morning passed by pretty quick, the meeting with Stark taking up majority of Bucky’s time so I barely saw him. He did manage to send me a few texts during the meeting.
I miss you.
I bet you’re staring at your work with a small smile on your face.
All I can think about is your mouth on my cock.
The last one caused my cheeks to flush and I had to make sure no one was around to read it on my phone. Thankfully, Steve and Sam were out doing the lunch pick up for me, since they saw I was buried in work. The three of us had just finished our lunch together on the couch in the main area of the office when the door behind me opened Stark greeting us with a smile.
“Afternoon. Say, Y/N, I heard you stood up to Clint Barton,” Tony asked with a raised brow.
I gave a half shrug. “It wasn’t that big of a deal. I just told him that I knew more than he thought I did, that’s all.”
“Don’t be too sure,” Stark placed his infamous glasses on the bridge of his nose. “Barton doesn’t like being played like a fool, especially by women.”
My heart began to beat fast and Steve noticed the way I shifted in my chair, placing a comforting hand on my knee to stop it from shaking.
“I wouldn’t worry about it too much, Y/N,” Steve assured me.
All I could do was nod while Bucky appeared behind Stark and showed him the way out, his eyes landing on Steve and me. The way his pupils darkened told me that he was jealous with how close we were.
Steve must have sensed it because he removed his hand, placing it in his own lap.
“Sam, any word from your guy if it’s ready?” Bucky asked.
Sam held up his phone. “It’ll be ready in an hour.”
I looked between them, confused, and wanted to ask what they were talking about but with the stance Bucky had, I kept my lips shut.
Bucky tossed a large leather bag onto Steve’s lap with a bit of extra force. “Why don’t you and Steve head over there to pick it up.”
Steve snickered while running a hand through his hair. “No need to be jealous, punk.”
Bucky’s jaw clenched. “Get it done, jerk.”
He then turned his attention towards me. “Y/N, can I see you in my office please?”
I swallowed thickly. “Sure.”
Bucky watched as Sam and Steve left before following me close into his office, the door locking shut behind us.
“Did I do-?”
My question was seized with Bucky’s lips on mine, ravishingly attacking them, while he backed me against the wall and locked me in with his hips. I ran my hands through his short hair, wishing I had something to grab and pull, so I settled with tracing my fingers behind his neck.
Bucky’s vibranium hand snuck up my shirt and began palming my left breast, my moan being swallowed by his tongue. He pulled away briefly, his pupils blown from lust, and began to bite down hard on my neck.
“Bucky,” I hissed. “Someone will see.”
“I don’t care,” he grunted into my neck, hips grinding into mine.
My eyes fluttered shut at the feeling of ecstasy, the tip of his grown cock pressing into my thigh. I went to work on his belt in hopes that his pants would follow, however, his phone rang from pocket halting all of our actions.
Bucky cursed as he pulled away and fished the phone out, eyes scanning the screen.
“Is it important?” I asked, breathless from our kiss.
He nodded. “Why don’t you head home for the rest of the day. I’ll come by after dinner.”
I noticed the way his shoulders tensed, and face went rigid with anger.
“Anything I could help with?”
Bucky cupped my cheek and left a gentle kiss upon it. “I appreciate the help, doll. But I can handle it.”
“Alright,” I nodded. “Eight o'clock?”
“Eight o'clock,” Bucky grinned.
Tumblr media
I slammed the drawer shut with force, retrieving the pen I had been looking for, and hastily wrote down the list of things I needed to pick up at the store today for the office. My breathing was low and deep, anger festering low in my belly.
“Doll,” the voice breathed against the shell of my ear.
I pushed away from him and my desk, walking towards the other end of the office to do whatever I found for myself. As long as I was far away from him, I didn’t care what it was.
“Y/N,” Bucky sighed as he followed me.
“Leave me alone,” I demanded, not bothering to look at him.
He stepped in front of me, blocking my path towards the small break room. A groan of annoyance rumbled out of my throat.
“I’m sorry,” he apologized with a small pout.
I scoffed and put all of my weight on my left foot. “You’re sorry? You fucking ditched me, Bucky. I waited all night for you.”
He nodded and wrapped a hand around my wrist, bringing it to his lips and peppered kisses all over the skin there.
“I know but something came up.”
“Right, of course. What was it, work?” I questioned.
Bucky swallowed and avoided my gaze. “Yeah.”
My eyes sliced into him and removed myself from his grasp. “You’re a shit liar. Natasha posted a picture of the two of you at some club last night.”
“Shit,” he cursed.
“If you wanted to spend time with her, that’s all you had to say. I get it, she comes first.”
My body was pressed up against a door behind me, Bucky capturing my lips in such a breathtaking kiss that I stood frozen in his embrace. It was a hard one, parting my lips with the force of it. There was nothing soft about it, the door I was pressed against rattling as Bucky shifted our position, his thigh digging into my heated core, and grabbed my face between his hands.
Every single thought I had in my head exploded, to a bright, pounding white and I felt a desire twist in my insides heat up, ready to snap with my orgasm, thanks to Bucky moving my hips up which caused me to rut my pussy against his thigh.
There was a screaming voice in my head, however, to stop this before someone walked in because even if we were hidden behind the wall, if someone turned the corner, they would catch us. I went to pull away but Bucky’s grip in my hair tightened while he swallowed my tongue.
“No,” he said, bringing my lips back to his. Just like the previous kiss before.
He had me in his hands like putty and I ignored the voice in my mind, hands sneaking underneath his suit jacket and pressed himself closer to me, my entire skin feeling as if it was on fire.
“Hello?” A petite voice echoed.
Bucky and I practically jumped away from each other after hearing the familiar voice and while I fixed my hair and shirt, Bucky shifted his now prominent dick, hoping it wouldn’t show her what we were just doing.
“Bucky?” The voice sounded again.
He walked out in the open and smiled at Natasha. “What are you doing here, sweetheart?”
I leaned up against the wall to take a few deep breaths, hoping that the extra time would calm the redness that spread over my body. Natasha couldn’t see me so there was no way she caught what we had been doing.
“Are you here alone?” Natasha asked.
Bucky side eyed me and nodded. “Yeah, everyone went out for lunch.”
“Well, Clint showed up to the house and he kept rambling on about-.”
He grasped Natasha’s arm to silence her before pulling her into his office, my eyes watching with curiosity as to what the hell he didn’t want me to hear.
