Songs that remind me of Iwaoi
Animal by Neon Trees
Here we go again
I kinda want to be more than friends
Tongue tied by GROUPLOVE
Oh, take me to your best friend's house
I loved you then and I love you now
Mr Porcelain by Jude York
I've never been so close
To such pretty things
And it hurts to be only of earth
Mr porcelain doll
Mr instagram scroll
Mr flatter me enough
Just to keep me on my toes
Make you mine by PUBLIC
Well, I will call you darlin' and everything will be okay
'Cause I know that I am yours and you are mine
Doesn't matter anyway
In the night, we'll take a walk, it's nothin' funny
Just to talk
Put your hand in mine
You know that I want to be with you all the time
Space song by Beach House
It was late at night
You held on tight
From an empty seat
A flash of light
It will take a while
To make you smile
Somewhere in these eyes
I'm on your side
Boy will be bugs by Cavetown
I just turned 14
And I think this year I'm gonna be mean
Don't mess with me, I'm a big boy now, and I'm very scary
I punch my walls, stay out at night, and I do karate
Cloud 9 by Beach Bunny
But when he loves me, I feel like I'm floating
When he calls me pretty, I feel like somebody
...
You will always be my favorite form of loving
Pretty Face by PUBLIC
Are we enough?
Do we measure up?
Are we enough?
Do we measure up?
Such a pretty face, you see her walking around
Oh, she's such a pretty face
Still into you by Paramore
Can't count the years on one hand
That we've been together
I need the other one to hold you
Make you feel, make you feel better
It's not a walk in the park
To love each other
But when our fingers interlock
Can't deny, can't deny you're worth it
...
I should be over all the butterflies
But I'm into you (I'm into you)
And baby even on our worst nights
I'm into you (I'm into you)
Mystery of love by Sufjan Stevens
Like Haphaestion, who died
Alexander's lover
Hey there Delilah by Plain White T's
A thousand miles seems pretty far
But they've got planes and trains and cars
I'd walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us
And we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way
Somewhere only we know by Keane
And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So, why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know
Jenny by Studio Killers
I wanna ruin our friendship
We should be lovers instead
I don't know how to say this
'Cause you're really my dearest friend
The Story by Conan Gray
And when I was younger
I knew a boy and a boy
Best friends with each other
But always wished they were more
'Cause they loved one another
But never discovered
'Cause they were too afraid of what they'd say
Moved to different states
Christmas Kids by Roar
You'll change your name, or change your mind
And leave this fucked up place behind
But I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know

Low key writing an iwaoisuga fanfic in which modern day 29 year old elementary school teacher accidentally breaks a thousand year old spell sealing away the demon king and his knight and now he feels morally obligated to watch over them because Oikawa is 100% down to destroy humanity for sealing him away and Iwaizumi might just let him because he’s kinda pissed too, and Suga doesn’t want that to happen. Luckily after 1000 years Oikawa’s powers are coming back slowly so Suga has time to convince him to not kill everyone and wow them both with the concept of a grocery store.

things gone unsaid
summary: iwaizumi confesses. oikawa handles it as best he can. prompt: spotify wrapped prompts #14, talk too much (COIN) for @heysillybee pairings: hajime iwaizumi/tooru oikawa words: 1910 warnings: homophobia
Oikawa isn’t quite sure what he’s supposed to do with his hands. He’s not quite sure what to do with any of himself, really. He doesn’t know what the procedure is when you were just supposed to be out for coffee and your best friend blurts out that he’s in love with you. What are you supposed to do when you’re halfway to another sip of your cappuccino and your best friend looks at you and, with all the boldness of a child passing a yes/no/check one note to a classmate, says, “I’m in love with you,” just before he drops his gaze to the space between them?
Oikawa stares at him, his lips slightly parted, caught between breaths.
The problem, really, though, does not lie in the fact that Iwaizumi said it. The problem lies in the fact that Oikawa had never been prepared to hear it. If he’s being honest with himself, he had already guessed that Iwaizumi is in love with him. Iwaizumi is subtle, but he’s not that subtle.
So Oikawa knew. He noticed when Iwaizumi’s touches started to linger, when his hugs got that much tighter, when his smiles began to hold a little more warmth and a little more strain to them. He noticed when Iwaizumi began to glance over at him after every joke or comment, looking for his laughter. He noticed when Iwaizumi started to stare a little too long and a little too fondly. He knew.
He just never thought Iwaizumi would get the guts to say it. He hadn’t prepared himself to hear it—it wasn’t something that was ever supposed to be said.
Iwaizumi is staring at the table they’re sitting at, his expression carefully schooled into something passive, something neutral, something that isn’t breaking apart at the seams. His knuckles are white where he clenches his mug of coffee; his eyes are trained on a napkin that Iwaizumi has folded into an origami swan. There’s a focus in them that reminds Oikawa of the way he looks while on the court: intent on winning, on keeping his body in control.
Iwaizumi was never supposed to say it—that he loves Oikawa—but he did, and now they have to address it. Now they have to talk about it, and that’s the last thing Oikawa has ever wanted to do.
“Say something,” Iwaizumi mutters, keeping his eyes on the table. He swallows, finally looking up to meet Oikawa’s gaze. Shocked and unsteady, meeting careful and subdued. “Oikawa.”
Oikawa exhales. He takes a long sip of his drink, letting the warmth flood through him and wash away all his anxiety. All the awkwardness that’s suddenly rising between the two of them, despite their friendship never having this kind of awkwardness before. He looks at Iwaizumi, who meets his eyes. There’s something sad in them now—resigned—as if he’s realized what Oikawa is going to tell him.
“I don’t know what to say,” Oikawa says quietly.
Iwaizumi shrugs. Hollowly, he says, “You can reject me, if you want.”
He says it carelessly, but Oikawa can hear how measured the words are. He says it like he’s tossing the words and the message away into the wind, letting it drift vaguely in Oikawa’s direction. But Oikawa knows him, knows the way he speaks when he’s on the defensive, knows the way his face contorts when he’s scared and trying to hold himself together.
So Iwaizumi says it as if it’s fine, as if it doesn’t matter, as if it won’t hurt. He says it as if Oikawa’s rejection would be handled just the same as Iwaizumi’s own confession: briefly, lightly, then tossed to the wind to be forgotten.
Oikawa licks his lips, still keeping his eyes on Iwaizumi. “It’s…more complicated than that.”
Iwaizumi’s eyes snap to him. “How the fuck is it more complicated than that? Either you like me or you don’t.”
Oikawa’s heart skips a beat, skips a dozen more, comes to a stuttering stop. He doesn’t want to deal with this, with his own feelings. He doesn’t want to have this conversation.
“It’s not that easy,” Oikawa tries to say. It comes out more choked than not.
Iwaizumi has always been so much braver than him. He’s always carried his heart on his sleeve like a weapon. Oikawa, on the other hand, wears his love behind a thousand stone walls, hidden way up in a tower guarded by a dragon. Iwaizumi can say things like I love you as if the repercussions don’t matter in the face of any chance he might have with Oikawa. Oikawa, though, has never been able to think the words without shame and fear broiling through his body.
If it is as simple as like and don’t like, then Oikawa knows his answer. He’s known for as long as he’s known that Iwaizumi loves him.
But the fact of the matter is that it’s not that simple. It’s so much more complicated than that. He knows that better than Iwaizumi seems to know. He knows that they’ve been holding their breath and dancing around this for years because it’s a bridge too terrifying to cross. He knows that, should this go wrong, should he make one wrong move, he’ll lose everything.
Oikawa has never been good with feelings and relationships, and he knows that he would fuck this up. He knows that it would change everything, and it might ruin everything, too. He knows that a kiss between friends is never just a kiss between friends. There’s always a catch.
He doesn’t think that Iwaizumi would ever intentionally hurt him, but there are other things to consider. There is the way the rest of the world would look at them, as if they are something wrong. There is the way their parents would never support such a thing; the way they would say they’re bad influences on each other and keep them separated.
On top of all the external factors, there is the way their relationship could fall apart and cost them both a friendship that means more than the world. There is the fact that Oikawa takes everything good in his life and poisons it with his own pride and ambition and paranoia; which is to say that he takes everything good Iwaizumi has ever offered him and he is too afraid to give anything back.
“Why not?” Iwaizumi asks.
Oikawa’s hands are trembling, and so he grips both hands around his mug to try to still the shaking. He feels out of control; he feels as if he’s losing everything. If he says that he likes Iwaizumi back, everything would change. If he rejects Iwaizumi, he gets the sense that he wouldn’t be forgiven for a long, long time.
Oh, Iwaizumi would never hold it against him with a grudge or anger, but it would be a shadow of bitterness and regret that would linger. Iwaizumi might not be mad, but he would be hurt, and Oikawa has never been able to stand Iwaizumi hurting.
The difference, now, is that it’s Oikawa who’s hurting him.
“It just isn’t,” Oikawa snaps, harsher than he means it to be. “There are so many things to—so many reasons that—”
Iwaizumi is staring at him, wide eyes, and Oikawa stops as his voice cracks. He could list all of the reasons they could never be together, he could explain all of the reasons he hasn't ever allowed himself to entertain the idea of loving Iwaizumi back, he could close his eyes and whisper all the reasons he’s afraid of a relationship. He could tell Iwaizumi all of the things he hears his family say about boys who fall in love with other boys—because boys in love with their best friends are not boys who are also sons—and he could tell Iwaizumi that he’s never agreed with any of that.
He could tell Iwaizumi that, despite his reputation, he’s never kissed anyone before and oh, please let Iwaizumi be the one to kiss him first and next and last. He could tell Iwaizumi that he doesn’t know what he’s doing with himself and he doesn’t know where to start with any of this, and that terrifies him. He could tell Iwaizumi yes, I have always loved you back. How could I ever not? It’s me and you.
But he just cuts himself off to look at Iwaizumi. To try to unravel him from the inside out, try to understand how he can be so calm about all of this.
“You’re thinking too hard,” Iwaizumi says, cracking a smile. “You always do. Just…for a minute, okay, pretend it’s just you and me. Forget about everything else in the world. Like how, while you’re on the court, it’s just us and the ball and the next point.”
“Iwa…”
Iwaizumi shakes his head and Oikawa stops. “Just humor me for a minute. Sit there and pretend it’s just you and just me and nothing else. No one else matters right now. Close your eyes.”
“Okay,” Oikawa says hoarsely, doing as Iwaiuzmi asked. He wants to cry. Iwaizumi has always been too good for him.
“I love you,” Iwaizumi says softly. “Do you love me too?”
Oikawa exhales. “Yeah. I do.”
“Then isn’t that what matters?”
“Iwa,” Oikawa starts. Then he stops. Opens his eyes. He says, quietly, as if there is no answer, “I don’t know what I’m doing. This could backfire horribly.”
Iwaizumi shrugs. “So?”
“So this could—”
“But what if it doesn’t?” Iwaizumi asks. “What if it doesn’t backfire, and it actually turns out really, really well. Don’t you want to find out?”
Oikawa stares at him for a long time. Again, he finds himself unsure of what to do with his hands. What to do with his movements. He just knows that he wants to—
Iwaizumi reaches over, puts a hand on his hand. The touch is warm in the cool air, comfortable and familiar. There’s nothing to be afraid of, in this. There’s just him and Iwaizumi. Just the two of them.
“Okay?” Iwaizumi asks, hesitant for the first time in this conversation. “I love you. Is that okay?”
Oikawa swallows, and nods. Slowly, then quickly. He’s done holding his breath and hoping that nothing changes. He’s done avoiding this conversation. “Yeah, I think so.”
“You don’t have to say it back if you aren’t ready to.” Iwaizumi says, endlessly understanding and infinitely kind. “But I want you to know now.”
“I—” Oikawa stops. It feels like there are a million prying eyes watching them, stripping them of everything pure and turning it into something terrifying. But there’s no one else in this café. Just him and Oikawa and their words. But still—he can’t bring himself to say it. He can’t find a way through the silence. “I want to try this. If you’ll let me.”
Iwaizumi smiles at him, a genuine, bright, and honest smile. Like he had doubted it earlier in the conversation, but had ultimately expected this outcome. He probably did. For all that Oikawa was reading Iwaizumi, Iwaizumi was probably seeing him just as clearly: him and all his unspoken confessions. All his too-long looks, and smiles of approval, and lingering hands on shoulders.
All those things going unsaid—now that they’ve been spoken, they’re much less terrifying than they were in his head. They’re all somewhat beautiful, if he thinks about it when Iwaizumi is smiling at him like that. They’re somewhat hopeful.

i need an angsty and bittersweet (or hurt/comfort… i’m not that strong) shobio or iwaoi timeskip fic based off “dorothea” by taylor swift
“Do you ever stop and think about me?/When we were younger/Down in the park/Honey, making a lark of the misery”
“You got shiny friends since you left town/A tiny screen's the only place I see you now/And I got nothing but well wishes for ya”
“This place is the same as it ever was/But you don't like it that way”
“It's never too late/To come back to my side/The stars in your eyes/Shined brighter in Tupelo”
“And if you're ever tired of being known/For who you know/You know, you'll always know me”
“You’ll always know me.” ?!?!?? call an ambulance i can’t breathe

iwaizumi about oikawa at the very start: you’ve got the most usual eyes and your fucking scarf is only suffocating me and your not-so-deep soul turned out to be no better than a puddle.
iwaizumi about oikawa at the end: you’ve got the most beautiful eyes and your fucking scarf is not even fucking and your not-so-deep soul maybe was the best.

For the shipping bingo:
IwaOi, UshiTen, TanaNoya (tried to pick ones we haven't talked about so much)
ooh, thank you!!!
IWAOI
Tumblr media
my favorite childhood friends to lovers ship in haikyuu but it also very much depends on how they’re written. i have a vendetta against fanon iwaoi. 😒 i don’t really read a lot of fic about them for that reason. it’s usually oikawa characterizations i have issues with but the iwaizumi characterizations are sooo bad sometimes too.
USHITEN
Tumblr media
CUTE!! i think they’re neat. autistic4autistic <3 i’m not as familar with the ushiten fanon? i’ve never seen anything i really disliked but that may just because i’ve never really seeked out ushiten stuff on my own either… i just rely on what my mutuals post and they’re always right.
TANANOYA
Tumblr media
depends, i kinda just see their relationship as platonic BUT i have seen really cute art that i liked. and also they absolutely kissed “for practice” a lot in high school. like. there’s no denying that.

gold rush is an iwaoi song
this songs lyrics are the description of my iwaoi (taylor’s version) playlist and here’s why !!
slightly angsty, Iwa pining pov analysis of gold rush by taylor swift 🥲
But I don't like a gold rush, gold rush.
I don't like anticipating my face in a red flush
I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch
you’re kidding… Oikawa is the guy at aoba johsai, even in their prefecture. He has the fan girls, the television and magazine appearances. They fancy him, want him as a partner. We never saw anyone confess to him, but it’s obvious that he definitely received at least a couple from his fans.
Everybody wants you,
Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you
Again, Oikawa has people that want him, and Iwaizumi is always by his side. Iwa sees it all. He sees the loving stares, whispers in the hallway, the confessions. Iwa knows that everybody wants Oikawa. They wonder what it would be like to love him.
I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush
I don't like that falling feels like flying 'til the bone crush
Everybody wants you.
But I don't like a gold rush
Iwa doesn’t like this perception of Oikawa that everyone else has. They see him as a perfect boy, a star volleyball player with the charm and charisma that they love to see through rose tinted glasses. Iwa doesn’t see Oikawa this way, he just sees him as his childhood best friend, Tooru. He doesn’t love this gold rush that everyone else loves.
What must it be like
To grow up that beautiful?
With your hair falling into place like dominos
Oikawa is attractive, obviously. He knows that he’s seen as beautiful, with his perfectly styled swooping hair and cheeky tongue out grin. He grew up with Oikawa as he developed into the desired young man he is. Sometimes, Iwa does wonder what it must have been like, to transition from that awkward child Tooru had been, into this teenage heartthrob.
I see me padding 'cross your wooden floors
With my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door
Can Iwa imagine a life where he and Oikawa finally confess to each other? A life where they share their favourite teams shirts and lounge around in them together? He wants to.
At dinner parties, I call you out on your contrarian shit.
And the coastal town we wandered 'round had never
Seen a love as pure as it
Iwa loves to call Oikawa out on his contrarian shit… not the petty arguments they have. No, he calls him out for not looking out for himself the way Oikawa looks out for other people. He calls him out for never caring as much about himself as he does for his teammates. Their friends see this, and they know it is from a place of pure love and care.
And then it fades into the gray of my day old tea
'Cause you know it could never be
But, in the end, Iwa knows it could never be. They’re destined to be separated, and he’s known it since Oikawa excitedly told him that he wanted to play for Argentina. Iwa knows he could never get in the way of Tooru’s dreams. Iwa knows he is going to California anyway… it’s pointless. It could never be.
