SO I AM IN AN ADVANCED PHYSICS COURSE DO NOT ASK ME WHY I MAKE BAD DECISIONS. ANYWAYS.

LIGHTNING. KAMINARI’S QUIRK. IVE HAD SOME THOUGHTS

BASically field and charge are two important things to consider when we talk about lightning (btw I’ve been simplified a lot of this to like. Not make ppl throw up it is icky ik math is gross unfortunately it is so interesting and cool anyways don’t come at me if it’s not all encompassing or mathematically sound this is more theoretical and conceptual than actual like. Calculations although now that I say that I’m kinda interested in seeing what the numbers would be.....)

When an amount of charge flows through a given area it is current. A lot of current flowing through ur body will kill u. Interrupt ur heart’s electric impulses, fuck w ur brain’s signals, all of it, etc etc it’s not good for u. Duh. U r like Gabe y r u telling me this this is boring booo

But field! Field is really interesting! And terrifying!!

E (electric field vectors) move charged particles within them. We can use the idea of V (electric potential aka voltage aka the electromagnetic physicist’s wet dream) and equipotential lines (lines where V is consistent at different distances) to say that E in between V lines moves particles ‘upstream’ or ‘downstream’. + particles move ‘down’ voltage (towards the equipotential line w the smaller voltage), and vice versa for - particles.

So what happens if you put an atom inside an E field? We know atoms are held together by electromagnetic forces (positives and negatives are attracted but to each other ofc). But what if the field is strong enough to ‘break’ those electromagnetic ‘bonds’ (not really bonds and not really breaking but I’m using that language to try to be more friendly to non-needs :)) holding the atom together? At it’s most basic conceptualization, an atom is just + and - particles (protons and electrons). What happens when the positive particles move down voltage and the negative particles move up voltage?

Well basically the atoms making up the person fall apart. To the naked eye, they have in fact been ‘vaporized.’

All I’m saying is Kaminari is...... a little spooky to me when I think about him like this. Like I’m not sure he’s even gotta touch someone to fuck them up. Bro just release ur electricity u will literally vaporize anyone around u even if the current doesn’t pass directly through their body and give them a heart attack. Call me controversial, but I don’t think people like Kaminari and dislike or hate Mineta because of their respective looks. Although I acknowledge it’s probably a factor, I personally don’t think it’s the main reason. I might be wrong, but I think I at least have some ground to stand on because I’m a person who, when getting into a new piece of media, picks their favorites by which character they think is the prettiest until they figure out personalities and change or keep favorites based on their actual character/arc/story/etc.

Now, Kaminari is definitely attractive, and there are definitely people who give him a pass for the more… questionable things he’s done (yes, as a Kami fan I too would rather forget the whole cheerleader outfits thing), I think it would be a bit shortsighted to say that that’s the only reason. Personally, I’m of the belief that a lot of people would have still preferred Kaminari over Mineta even if Mineta was a hunk and Kaminari was ugly.

Again, looks do matter somewhat, but given the popularity of characters like Usopp from One Piece I feel safe in saying that it’s not the deciding factor for a lot of anime fans. Now, to finally get to what I believe is the main reason for why Kaminari is so loved and Mineta isn’t: personality. Or, more specifically, the depth of their personality. I’ll try my best to contrast the two of them and explain why I believe this, because I’m passionate about analysis and you can’t stop me. Feel free to correct or add to anything I write in the comment section, I’d love to hear your thoughts! So, first things first, what exactly are their core personalities?

When I think of Kaminari, I think of someone who’s friendly and outgoing, an energetic goofball with a good heart who’s generally someone you want to be around. Sometimes he’s a bit reckless and he can be a bit dumb, sometimes he’s petty, but in the end you can all laugh about it. Yes, like a lot of teenage boys, he likes girls. And sometimes, in that appreciation of women, he goes a tad too far but it’s nothing too extreme.

When I think of Mineta, however, I mostly think about his over-the-top obsession with girls. His motivation to become a hero is literally to get girls to like him. The second thing I think of is his cowardice and how annoying I find it when he starts crying in tough situations. I understand it, but I’m not the one trying to become a hero. Also, Mineta criticizes others for being perverts in situations that end up being misunderstandings while he himself does some objectively fucked up shit in the name of horny. Despite this, he’s shown to have courage and aptitude when it matters most, and given his scores he seems to be pretty smart.

The main difference between the two, I think, is how they are most commonly seen in the manga and show. There are plenty of instances where we see Kaminari’s good personality traits, whereas most of Mineta’s screen-time is devoted to an extended pervert-joke. Sure, he has redeeming qualities, but even on the rare occasions these are shown there’s usually some pervertedness involved in one way or another. And ultimately, I think that’s the biggest reason people prefer Kaminari. Not only does Mineta go a lot further in being pervy that Kaminari, his redeeming qualities are also not only barely shown but also always accompanied by his perverse nature. And that’s why I think people like Kaminari and not Mineta.

This concludes my newest bit of word-vomit, this time on why I believe two characters who some see as similar are regarded so differently and evoke such different reactions from people, thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk

well it’s after one in the morning and i’m still awake so you know what that means!

i think criticizing the fandom portrayal of kaminari as the funny, slutty-type character is a valid thing when that criticism centers on how people dumb him down and act like that’s all he is. i think it’s very wrong to treat someone interested in sex as if they’re stupid or as if that’s all they are — people are people and not just what they like/what they do.

that said, i was thinking abt my portrayal of kaminari in spark plug, and why i feel so comfortable and confident writing him this way.

kaminari is honestly very smart. he picks up on subtle things, but he doesn’t necessarily understand them and he can’t always fit the puzzle pieces together quickly enough. but that doesn’t mean he’s stupid — he’s very observant, and the calculations he has to make for his shooters make this obvious.

the fact that he’s bad at math means nothing. linguistically, he’s got a great vocabulary, and he’s not shy about it. i think that’s very lovely and something that brings me a lot of joy as someone who likes words (obviously).

and (for my characterization) i like the idea of kaminari enjoying sex. i think one of the lesser spoken about parts of adhd/neurodivergency is the scale of sex repulsed/indifferent and hypersexual. i enjoy having the chance to examine this more in writing, and i think it’s very fun to study especially with a character like kaminari, given how flirty and playful he is in canon.

i’m not saying i want kaminari going out and fucking everyone in sight, because that’s not what it’s about. and that’s why i make it so explicitly clear in spark plug why kaminari does what he does.

he lacked attention and affection as a kid, he’s nd, and he just enjoys physical contact — but he’s not doing it just to have flings or no-strings-attached relationships. he does it to form bonds with people, to practice intimacy, to build closeness. it makes him feel loved and it lets him express love in return.

obviously not everyone is going to characterize him the same way and i wouldn’t want them to. but i just wanted to elaborate on why i chose to write kaminari as a more sexually active character, and why i don’t think that’s a bad thing (at least in my portrayal).

hey guys, so I’ve finished reading BnHA 342 which was a delight to read, but my reaction post is very, very long and will take some time to edit, so in the meantime I’ve decided to make a separate post just to talk about this one character interaction which I am absolutely obsessed with!

let’s see how long of an analysis I can make about this ONE, SINGLE JOKING REMARK THAT KACCHAN MADE COMPLETELY OFFHANDEDLY.

1. so first off, let’s just cut straight to the heart of the matter: this. is. friendship. no more denial. no more HAH, NO WAY, OF COURSE WE AREN’T FRIENDS NOW WALK BEHIND ME!!! the Kacchan who was too embarrassed and too chuuni to admit that he was friends with Shouto died at Jakku. and the Kacchan who’s been running the show ever since then is someone who openly worries about Shouto (asking about him immediately after waking up in the hospital), unabashedly provides him with emotional support (hand on the shoulder when class 1-A confronted Endeavor), and hangs out with him in his room because he doesn’t want Shouto to be going through all this shit alone.

2. speaking as someone whose own #1 love language is using humor to try and relax people and make them feel comfortable and safe and welcomed and at ease, the fact that Katsuki used a joke as his chosen method of support here brought me SO MUCH JOY I can barely even begin to express it. and it’s not even the first time he’s done this! never forget that one time after Kamino where class 1-A was all bummed after Aizawa told them off for coming to save him, and so he grabbed Kaminari and dragged him into the bushes and made him activate his derp mode in order to ease the tension! and also to distract them so he could quietly pay Kirishima back for the night vision goggles, because that is his OTHER love language (cold hard cash!! nah lol I’m referring to the act of physically, tangibly paying him back; showing his gratitude not just with words but with actions), but yeah.

my point is, for someone who always seems to be so angry and serious, Kacchan has a sharp sense of humor that he apparently just keeps tucked away under wraps, and dusts off only for rare special occasions like these, and I absolutely LOVE it and I need it to happen WAY MORE OFTEN. there is a very real possibility of me making a compilation post of every single time Kacchan has made a joke and/or actually laughed about something, just because I’m that desperate to know more about this expertly dry wit of his now.

3. getting back to his friendship with Shouto, this next talking point is the one that’s already been done to death (because you know I went and looked up all those 342 tumblr reactions and metas after I read this chapter because I needed to soak up that analysis asap), but nonetheless this post would not be complete without it! so this is very obviously a commentary on the fact that Shouto’s favorite food is cold soba! a fact which is known to every single citizen of the world! in fact this joke even takes that last part into account, since it relies on that fact being common knowledge in order to stick the landing! in a way it’s partially a friendly little dig at Shouto for making his favorite food such an important part of his personality! like, “hmm, so what would be the worst case scenario for Touya. well obviously it would be him liking something other than soba, since we all know that’s a deal-breaker.” basically this joke derives a good 60% of its humor from the fact that Shouto just loves soba THAT damn much. and Kacchan is obviously WELL aware of this fact because, as we all know, he and Shouto are actually best friends.

4. quick side note, this is also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it callback to chapter 164, which featured this hilarious interchange between Shouto and his OTHER best friend.

thus adding the additional meta layer that Shouto actually does canonically consider people who like udon to be FUNDAMENTALLY INCOMPATIBLE WITH HIM AS PEOPLE lmao. and Katsuki knows this because he was listening in on that whole conversation and bitching about the two of them being total weirdos! but ALSO he was apparently filing notes away in the back of his big hero brain because he loves Todo actually, so yeah. love it when a scene in a newer chapter retroactively makes a scene from an old chapter even better.

5. lest you worry that Kacchan is back to his OLD VILLAINOUS BULLYING WAYS by poking fun at poor sweet innocent Shouto here, let’s now talk about the ways in which this joke is also a sick burn on Touya! because that of course is the other 40% of the joke! if Shouto’s favorite food is soba, then OBVIOUSLY Touya’s favorite food is going to be the complete opposite of that, because Touya is the worst! just the absolute worst. man fuck that guy!

so there are a couple of additional layers to this part. the first is that Katsuki is very much aware of the delicate balance that needs to be struck here. because he genuinely, unironically DOES know Shouto pretty damn well by now, and so he understands how conflicted Shouto is about his brother. and because he’s a good friend, he’s supportive of Shouto’s desire to somehow redeem Touya if at all possible. and so instead of going all in on how Touya is a founding member of the final villains club WHO BRAGGED ABOUT KILLING THIRTY PEOPLE and who also KIDNAPPED HIM THAT ONE TIME, the worst thing that Kacchan accuses him of here is... having a different favorite food than Shouto. this is basically the gentlest, mildest “fuck that guy” that anyone could have possibly given here.

and then the second bonus layer is that Katsuki is very clearly taking Shouto’s side here. that’s the only possible way for this joke to land. the humor works because Katsuki takes the mundane accusation of liking hot udon, and twists it into a sick fucking burn, because ONLY AN UNHINGED LUNATIC WOULD DARE TO LIKE SUCH A COMPLETELY OPPOSITE FOOD FROM COLD SOBA, THE BELOVED FAVORITE FOOD OF TODOROKI SHOUTO. in other words, if you don’t like Todoroki Shouto’s favorite food, then FUCK YOU! Team Soba all the way! so yeah, it has that connotation too, which is actually very sweet.

6. last but not least, I just want to take a moment to gush about how this was all just perfectly executed and timed. Shouto sets him up for it, and Kacchan pounces on the opportunity without hesitation and delivers the perfect response, which immediately relieves some of the quiet tension in the room, and honest to god actually makes Shouto laugh.

sort of! that was a chuckle at least! it counts!! anyways the point is, Katsuki read the room perfectly and understood that Shouto was trying to lighten the mood and didn’t want to have a heavy conversation about all of his feelings right now (which is something that Katsuki understands very well), so he followed Shouto’s lead and met him at that level, while still managing to communicate (1) “I know how conflicted you are about all of this”, (2) “I’ve got your back”, and most importantly, (3) “we are friends, and I care about you and support you in all things, you big soba loving freak.” it’s affectionate, it’s heartwarming, and it’s genuinely funny as hell.

anyway so yeah, that’s my RIDICULOUSLY, UNJUSTIFIABLY LONG post about what has instantly become one of my all time favorite little throwaway BnHA moments, right up there with the legendary “hey Kacchan!” scene. Kacchan being friends with people. Shouto getting some much-deserved love. Iida and Kirishima being there too, and presumably smiling and taking notes and maybe one day they can tell their children about this. that’s what it’s all about folks.

Everyone does the BNHA characters watching Disney movies with their s/o and as much as I love disney, let’s mix it up and do Dreamworks instead! Bakugou + The Road to El Dorado, Tokoyami + HTTYD, Kaminari + Kung Fu Panda, Todoroki + Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Midoriya + The Prince of Egypt please. Thank you!

Lovely idea, anon! Unfortunately I have not watched most of these movies (minus kung fu panda but that's like when the first movie came out lol), so I can't give in-depth headcanons. However,

I do think that Bakugou would hog the snacks as you two watched the movie together, as well as pretend to be annoyed when you fell asleep against his shoulder, though, he quickly adjusts the cover over your body so that you don't get too cold.

I think Tokoyami believes dragons are fascinating creatures (seeing as he too can take a dive in the sky) and happily watches the entire franchise. Tokoyami makes sure to give you an in depth movie analysis after each movie is over, and you both have a moment where you consider what you would name your dragon if you two ever got one together.

I think Kaminari is constantly doing martial arts moves once you finish kung fu panda, but he’s always failing somehow— one time he tried to do a kick spin and ran straight into the wall. Though, Denki’s favorite move is doing his special "sneak attack" where he suddenly comes behind you and hugs your waist tightly.

I think that whatever movie you put on, Todoroki enjoys. I believe he grows sentimental while watching the movie, maybe even expressing how frustrated he was of how the horses were being treated with a frown on his face. You love how passionate he’s become and Shoto urges you to have a movie marathon now.

I think that Izuku is always interested in watching movies that show different parts of the world, so he genuinely enjoyed this pick. He, like Tokoyami, goes into a spiral of the deeper meanings behind the plot and characters and is the type to be leaned forward with wide eyes as he takes in everything. He also is likely the one to stay up and laughs mid rant when he notices that you’ve dozed off. It’s the cutest sight to him.

Kaminari does not get enough respect on Quirk Nonsense. He doesn't just create elecrtic charge within himself, he somehow magically makes it go through the air instead of surging to the ground, and then also magically makes it *not* instantly murder whatever is on the other end as any electricity strong enough to pierce large air gaps would.

Consider: discharging it through the air like that is the reason it can't kill anyone. I assume it has to lose some amps in that indiscriminate shock

Quirk: Found Family - Unconsciously, Izuku constantly emits a low-level psychic field that, when someone gets caught in, makes that person want to adopt Izuku as their son/nephew/brother/etc. When in distress, the psychic field strengthens, forcing all those who have "adopted" Izuku to become murderous towards whoever or whatever distressed Izuku. Curiously, the only ones immune to this quirk are those with shitty/douchey personalities (e.g. Bakugou, Mineta, Endeavor, etc).

It’s so true though

The, “I’m not here to make friends squad” (shinsou and Shouto) both become besties with izuku (shinsou loves him, I don’t care what anyone says. After izuku tells everyone about ofa and rants about how great shinsou’s quirk is? Shinsou pledges his soul to this green demon.

Aizawa tries to resist for the longest time, but soon comes to realize that he would do anything for his son, Problem Child

Present mic accepts that he has a son within the first four days of knowing izuku. Izuku asks if mic could teach him JSL, he already started to learn because he’s hard of hearing (thanks, bakugou), but he figures that Mic would be able to help more than YouTube.

Midnight finds izuku’s hero analysis blog online and raves about it to the other teachers she reblogs from him and screen shots it to every social media she has and proudly proclaims that this is her student, and that he’s going to be a great hero

All might starts sometimes taking him out for ice cream after training him a few months before ua

Uraraka is the first of the UA students to be affected by his quirk. He helps her out during the entrance exam, and she promptly declares herself president of the Izuku Protection Squad/Club, Iida soon becomes treasurer

Kirishima one day asks bakugou why he’s such an asshole to the literal embodiment of heroism and sunshine, and bakugou just goes on a highly rude and offensive rant about how useless izuku is, which is like,,, #1 way to find yourself with a bunch of people angry at you. Kirishima stands up for izuku though :)

I don’t care who you ship izuku with, they will get SO many shovel talks. Not just by the adults, but by izuku’s friends too

The most terrifying one to give the suitor The Talk tm is Inko. That’s her baby, and she trusts his judgement on who he chooses to date, and by all means, she knows that he can take care of himself (can he though @ the vigilante arc), but she’ll be damned if there isn’t the added factor of, “hurt my child and face my quirk that can tear you apart atom from atom”

Big brother izuku and his little sister Eri. They are adorable. They could kill you and you would thank them because, honestly, if they decided to do so, there is a good reason for it.

Izuku is Eri’s favorite person, and he is literally overjoyed when she tells him this. She finds him when she has nightmares, and he is always ready to comfort her and assure her that everything is, and will be, okay

Izuku stands up for Kaminari after people start making fun of him when he short circuits. He makes sure that he’s okay, and protects him from any harm that could befall him. After that, Kaminari too, pledges his soul to the green demon

Monoma tries to hide the fact that he does care for izuku, but after izuku fucks off for his vigilante arc, Monoma has a mild breakdown along with most people who have interacted with Izuku in recent months. Where is the class a bastard? Why is he not here? Why did he think this was a good idea? Why didn’t he ask for help? Why is he putting himself in so much danger? If he had asked literally 90% of UA would be at his side in an instant

Mei decides that Mr. 1 million is great after he helps her with her babies and helps her tests them. She decides that he’s even more reckless than she is after his solo mission where he goes off the grid for a while and tries to hunt down the worst super villain known to man. But hey, who is she to judge? She’ll support this mad man and help make all the tech he needs as long as he partners with hatsume industries, and she knows he will, because he’s great and definitely meets her crazy

Momo realizes how great Izuku is after he helps reassure her after she lost her fight at the sports festival. He finds her and talks about how great her quirk is and how smart she is. They are paired up for a project one time, and completely dominate. They help build each other’s confidence so much. I literally love these two so much, they’re both smart and insecure as shit. Momo loves listening to izuku’s analysis and makes comments every now and then too, and izuku just dies inside because he’s not being told to shut up or being called weird

Jirou always walks into the dorms on Saturday mornings asking for song recs. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, izuku makes her a playlist of some rare songs that she might not have heard yet, and Jirou promises that she would burst eardrums for this dude

Speaking of the dorms, when they are set up, the quirk becomes so much more powerful. Like, everyone already loved izuku, but now? He is their son/brother/cousin/nephew/crush/whatever the fuck, they care about him.

One time, he got to talking with toga, and soon enough, she’s spilling her tragic backstory Shouto style. *another one bites the dust plays in the distance* izuku has a new sister. Congratulations, everyone, a new member of the Izuku Protection Squad/Club has been found (I know this probably wouldn’t happen in Canon, but I love toga so much and if given proper quirk counseling and/or caring parents, she would have found her way into the izucrew. I stand by this and my mind will not be changed.)

Mina teachers izuku how to deal with his curly hair. She was appalled when she found out how he used to take care of them and makes it her mission to fix this tragedy. But she also really helps with his confidence. I love this duo so much, the chaos that they reign on UA is great.

Izuku is one of the first people to treat dark shadow like their own individual entity, and Tokoyami is shook. Sometimes, dark shadow, Tokoyami, and izuku hang out at night when they can’t sleep. So does anyone who wakes up from nightmares and can’t go back to sleep

Now. Aizawa was terrified of Nezu getting his hands on izuku’s analysis notebooks. He still has nightmares about how it happened, honestly. But one day, izuku was called out of class by Nezu and Aizawa honestly wondered if he should hand in his resignation. It took mic to convince him not to, but mic was also terrified of what would befall the world after Nezu got his hands on either izuku or momo (which we’ll get to in a moment). After a very long and interesting conversation with izuku, Nezu requests that he be shown all of izuku’s notebooks.

His laughs can be heard echoing across the school. Shivers go down spines. The sun hides behind the clouds.

Izuku tells Nezu that sometimes momo will do analysis with him, and that she’s a really great strategist, just lacks confidence.

Again, Aizawa feels his world tip on its axis as momo yaoyorozu is called into the principle’s office.

Soon, they are both appointed as nezu’s personal students, meeting up twice a week.

No one knows what goes on during those meetings and no one has the Gaul to ask.

Except Mina. But she doesn’t get a real answer from either of the students.

Koda loves that izuku is the first student of UA that he can comfortably communicate with through JSL, other students start learning after a few weeks though after learning that it’ll be easier to communicate with izuku, koda, and present mic if they can, and they don’t want anyone to feel excluded!

Sero loves pre-quirk era superhero movies, and overhears izuku talking about them one day. Immediately runs over and asks if he knows spider-man. He does. They need out about it for hours. Izuku overheard someone saying that Sero is, “plain looking” and stands up for him,. Sero is sinfkwnfitjsjks. Izuku tells izuku that people say the same thing about him, which Sero honestly cannot understand, because this boy is obviously precious and deserves the world. Yes, he could easily destroy said world, but if he decided to do so, he’d definitely have a reason and sero would support him

Izuku is not sure how he went from having one (1) person (his mother) care about him, to having a whole fleet of people who have his back 1000%, and he honestly struggles to accept that people genuinely care about him. Shouto theorizes that it’s a quirk first. He blatantly says that izuku has a quirk that makes people want to adopt him in some way, shape, or form bur shouto’s conspiracy theories are never taken very seriously by most people. He will never let them go though. He’s right. He knows it.

Hello! I'm really curious about statistically significant chapter 1 from Katsuki's pov. What is exactly on his thoughts when he corners her and burn her dress😭 and why did she got so famous on his circle of friends?? Like did he talk about her??

Hehehe I don't know if you've read the next chapters yet but all will (mostly) be revealed there!! I'll add below the cut for spoilers.

So Kaminari says in chapter one that Mina is gonna wet herself when he tells her what went down. It's implied that he does and like any group of good friends they definitely give Bakugou shit for it forever, and that's how stats girl becomes famous in their circle lol.

In chapter two Mina says Bakugou plots revenge out loud for months, meaning any time stats girl gets brought up he gets defensive about her. So he's talking about her a lot but definitely not waxing poetic. But the group can read between the lines with him anyway lol.

In terms of Bakugou's POV in chapter one, he's like a little kid with a crush who's just slighted them who doesn't know how to properly deal with it. You sort of the get the impression, based on the fact that he knows who she is, and from some of the comments made over the course of the rest of the fic, that he's looked into her, and found her work compelling--in the last chapter Izuku reveals, “Right after the last Hero Awards, he’d done all this research and he asked me about whether your model results lined up with some of the personal analysis that I was doing."

So Bakugou definitely feels that she's smart and that she's right which is like, unbearable for his hyperemotional perfectionist ass. Instead of processing it, he engages in the superpowered version of pigtail pulling, and gets even more worked up when she challenges him back and he finds that he likes it. He's not thinking all together too straight, he just wants to be perceived and recognized by her, so he symbolically like, leaves his mark on her (the hand print on the dress).

It's a little messy because I was a much more inexperienced writer at that point, but hopefully the general gist of all of that comes across by the end of the fic!!

The School Festival, tea time, and the evolution of All Might & Izuku

I feel like the School Festival/Gentle Criminal arc should get more attention for how much it develops All Might’s relationship with Izuku. This time we see them chatting, All Might had clearly been asking Izuku about the festival and they’re both super chill. Then All Might gives Izuku space to discuss what’s on his mind. He previously didn’t know what Izuku has wanted to talk about.

It’s a notable scene because it’s the first time that Izuku leads their talk, and All Might has no agenda except to listen to the kid.

Their first few meetings are very different — it’s 100% All Might pulling Izuku aside because All Might has something he wants to say. First, the post-USJ and pre-Sports Festival chat; then introducing Gran Torino; then the post-Stain reveal of AFO and the history of OFA. In all these meetings, Izuku goes in with no clue about what All Might wants to say.

It starts to change during the Overhaul arc — Izuku seeks out All Might to ask for his help securing a work study. All Might says he can’t help Izuku because it’s too awkward for him, but he sets up a meeting with Mirio to have him be the intermediary. Although, comically, both Izuku and Mirio are clueless about why All Might summoned them.

So yeah, All Might having tea with Izuku for no reason other than to let Izuku talk is new. Plus, in the School Festival arc, it’s All Might who has no idea why Izuku wants to meet.

Another notable part of the arc is All Might volunteering more info about himself, starting with his attempt to use support items. This must have been super secret if Izuku didn’t know about it! But All Might is making it super clear Izuku can be his own hero and use items if he wants. All Might isn’t telling Izuku what to do or let his own experiences/choices color how he advises Izuku.

All Might also volunteers that he didn’t use OFA continuously at 100% when he’s helping Izuku develop ranged attacks. While this isn’t a “secret,” it is something All Might realized is super obvious to him (of course he wasn’t maxing out his quirk all the time!) but somehow it’s not noticeable to Izuku, the quirk analysis kid. All Might gives Izuku the nudge he needs to put the clues together.

Finally….when Izuku goes missing before the Festival, All Might is looking frantically for him. He tells pretty much the entire UA staff how worried he is, and he calls Izuku’s phone every minute, then twice a minute. (The anime helpfully shows us the barrage of calls from “All Might” at “Yuei High School.”) Also, despite Sero and Kaminari teasing the Izuku is in trouble, there really aren’t any consequences for him.

Afterwards, the School Briefs light novel emphasizes All Might’s distress over Izuku, to the point he’s moping at a staff party and talking openly to the other teachers about how he feels at least a “small taste” of a parent’s worry. Bless Aizawa for basically saying “your boy is just like you” when All Might insists Izuku should have reached out for help. Clearly, there’s still work that needs to be done, but this arc has All Might and Izuku on the right track before Blackwhip and the war knock them back.
