Due to the trade of illegal dragon parts – horns, hides, teeth, eggs and even entire hoards – conservationists have had to take extreme measures to protect these magnificent creatures from poachers. The acclimation process can be a bit tricky, but once a dragon has become used to the presence of a knight, they seem to almost enjoy the prestige of having an armed guard.

Writing Challenge: Day 6 Forgiving  but not Forgetting

Many kingdoms have a set of words or motto passed down the ages, that through repetition have fossilized into a blessing or a prayer. These are often vestiges of dires past or cautions for vigilance. This one is no different. “Forgive, the Dragon,” the looming sign reminds all those who dare cross the Joint Gates.

Legends tell of a Queen, Elenore the Fair – for she is as fair in beauty as she is fair in rule over her people – who had not only guided her kingdom out of a period of drought and scarcity, but into one of trade and bounty. Beyond taking care of all within her kingdom, she built alliances with her neighbors, solidifying their relationships through commerce and mutual assistance. For a decade and two the Joint Kingdoms knew no hunger nor strife.

Alas, all good things come to an end. As peace and posterity grew in the South, jealousy and embitterment mirrored in a North that was not able to escape destitute. Mistaking the South’s hard work and dedication for mere chance and serendipity, the North’s resentment easily deepened into anger; and soon that hatred took up the form of a marauding army. A dark swarm of locusts that flocked south, gathering in size along the way, spreading from kingdom to kingdom, devouring everything in its path and desiccating what it cannot devour.

As the Joint Kingdoms listened in horror at reports of the savagery and cruelty headed towards them, the Queen urged her allies to take heed and hasten to fortify their walls and armies. The kingdoms all eagerly answered her call and gathered their best warriors and trained beasts, be they mechanical, flesh, or magical in nature. And yet, when the dreaded day arrived to face the oncoming curse and the newly minted armies had assembled under the Queen’s blue and red banner outside the Joint Gates, the Queen herself was nowhere to be found.

Jumping in at her stead, the Queen’s trusted advisor led her armies into glorious battle that day.  But she did not have her Queen’s savvy nor aptitude for strategy, and victory stayed beyond their grasp. After a grueling fight that lasted almost a full moon, both sides suffered heavy losses. While the Joint Armies were able to hold the marauders at bay, their depths were depleted and the kingdoms left defenseless. The marauders for their part, scurried back to the North, swearing their impending revenge.

Days into the aftermath, a haggard and disheveled Queen staggered through the castle doors. She painted a sympathetic tale of being taken the night before the great battle, locked away in a cave in the mountains of the west, only to narrowly escape and make the long journey back home. Though she bore all the physical signs of harsh detention and travel weariness, and none could find a reason to distrust her story – the sting of the betrayal rang deep, and deeper still with yet another comrade to be buried, word of yet another settlement beyond hope of rescue. 

While her trusted advisor gladly gave the throne back, the Queen knew her time was up. The trust she had garnered all these years was gone. All her wise counsel to prepare for the next attack fell on deaf ears. There is only distrust and disdain left in her people’s gaze for her.

Desperate to save her people, the Queen sought the help of the illusive forest witch and willingly gave herself to the witch’s dark magic. The next day, a great dragon with scales of blue and red swooped down from the heavens and perched on top of the tallest tower on the Joint Gates. There it stood guard for two moons, until just as the Queen had predicted, the marauders returned with an army larger than ever. 

This time it was the Dragon who led what defenses the Kingdoms had left to charge. It was the Dragon who almost single handedly annihilated the entire invading army, leaving no survivors. It was a dying attempt in defiance that drove a spear into the dragon’s heart. When the smoke cleared and the bodies were claimed, the people discovered in dismay, it was not a mighty dragon that was slain that day but their beloved Queen who had sacrificed herself. 

The Joint Kingdoms mourned like they never had before. While it was grief that kept their souls heavy and spirits down, it was shame and guilt that haunted them. Shame at how quickly they had all turned their backs on someone who had dedicated her entire life to serving the kingdoms, at someone who had not done anything to earn their ire. Guilt at how not a single one of them found courage to stand by her, like she did for them. 

With begrudging forgiveness in their hearts, for each other at least for none could forgive their own selves, they etched the words into every day lived and swore to never be so quick to judge again.
