Did you know that the Winged Lion's true name is possibly Buer? 🦁
Lion, Goat and Demon. While not outright stated, throughout the manga hints, sprinkles and symbolism of the Winged Lion's real identity were spread around including an image of it's true form in a book.

Profile is from my "Daemon Tarot set + book by Ariana Osborne" that takes it's info and art from the Dictionnaire Infernal.

I am a little confused. Someone on twt says that the lion that takes the place of King Wuji and the Azure Lion that is with his sworn brothers are two different lions and are not the same, however, some articles say that they are the same.
I’ve seen that as well! I personally never heard of this take before but I asked a friend and they told me that this is a real theory. I'm not sure how popular the two-lion theory is since I've never seen anyone else ever talk about it but I'll explain it here.
Two Lions theory - Wukong didn’t mention anything to Azure Lion when they met in the Camel Ridge arc. He mentioned nothing of their first fight in the Wuji Kingdom and this makes it strange he wouldn’t at least reference this. The master also says nothing of his Lion running away in the few short years that he was the one to release him from the Wuji kingdom. Never referenced in the book and thus it didn't happen.
Same Lion theory - Bodhisattva are only known for having a single beast they ride or their Diting and it would be strange that Manjushri has two of the exact same Lion. While other Bodhisattvas like GuanYin are connected to multiple animals (she has a pet goldfish and her Diting is a wolf) but only Manjushri has the same animal. He is never mentioned on having different animals and thus it is the same animal but he ran away the second time and that is why it wasn't mentioned.
In the most likely case, you have to think of it as a more out-of-story reason as to why there were multiple stories of Manjushri's animal companion in the story and they are both meant to be based on the same animal. Wu Cheng'en didn't write Xiyouji himself, he took what existing stories that were already there and was the man to make it into a single-story compilation. The stories most likely used the same Lion since Manjushri is an old and well-known figure but Wu Cheng'en still added both since it could work. Wu Cheng’en most likely didn’t bother to add any acknowledgment that these were the same beast within the story because it wasn't contradicting anything in the story for having this animal commit two crimes there would be no reason to not add both stories.
That being said I personally believe they are the same Lion even if it was overlooked to acknowledge how the same beast commits two different crimes. I think that plot wise it doesn’t disqualify that this Lion could have done both as unlikely as it is. The first time being out of his master's wish and the second time being of his own volition. I never heard of the Two Lion Theory being a popular thing and not sure if other people even heard about it but maybe @journeytothewestresearch knows something.

Still waters run deep…
——————————————————
I headcanon that it wasn’t death that made Macaque a scheming savage and a dirty player, he was always like that. But back in the days of the Brotherhood he was more shy and timid, which, combined with adoration of Wukong and (at the time) small figure, made him look rather harmless and sometimes naive.
But, sometimes, his true nature did shine through
Also first time drawing anyone from the brotherhood except gay monkeys

LIONROSE 🌹💐 (Leophantasma Floralis) or Xóchimiztli
"An unusual parasitism between a flower and a lion that evolved into an undead-like species. The Lionrose displays a beautiful mane akin to dahlia petals varying in color but in usual red whereas the rest of the body has a more ghostly appearance and properties. The cubs resemble rose buds and once they ‘bloom’ the skull becomes visible. Unlike their lion counterparts they don't show any sexual dimorphism and if anything have a more hermaphroditic approach like flowers. They are known to be able to phase through objects and some rumors even suggest other realms, adding to their mythicism.
They are astute hunters and usually live in small groups. Instead of relying on photosynthesis this parasitic species steals nutrients from other plants and living beings employing their root-like tendrils. Their beauty and ferocity has made them known and valuable across the land, for many folk wish to acquire their petals even if it is a deadly task."
One of my favourite personal designs so far!

I think the PEAKEST villain character design of this era tbh is "What if Aslan was Lucifer/Satan" aka The Winged Lion

I think it’s so interesting that Thistle sealed the Winged Lion away because it’s undoubtedly the reason why he was able to keep the dungeon going for 1000 years. And the thing is I don’t think we really know WHY he sealed it away, and he might not either!
Tumblr media
He grows distrustful of the demon, like we see here, and at some point after this (and having more of his desires eaten, which we can tell by the WL’s increased size…) he seals it away. And knowing that he’s totally willing to do things like stuff his own grand nephew in a doll for going against him, it’s not like doing something like that is against his character. But, still. The fact that he just so happened to stumble upon the action that would allow him to prolong the kingdom’s existence as part of the dungeon is… interesting. Hell, even the Winged Lion is surprised that Thistle apparently did this without knowing that the demon ate desires:
Tumblr media
This is just a hunch, but before taking Delgal into the dungeon and smashing the statue he talks about investigating the ruins a lot. And we know he does a lot of research, too. Could it be that he actually stumbled across the truth of the demon, but had the desire to do anything actionable with that knowledge nibbled out of him and forgotten about? But somehow, still had the overwhelming feeling of distrust in what the demon was saying?
Tumblr media
He knows the Winged Lion lies and manipulates people, and yet he lacks the willingness— or perhaps, the capacity— to reflect that back on his own behavior. It’s fascinating, and makes me wonder how long he would’ve lasted if not for sealing it away. It could’ve been simply the same kind of lashing out we see him do towards the people he distrusts that serendipitously turned out to be the right move in this circumstance, or it could’ve been something more. Honestly I’m not even really sure what I think, I’d be interested in hearing other’s interpretations!
