Kinda debating between Amber, Goldie, Glaze, and Quin for her name, may also squeeze in Melitta or Merope as an alias.

My chaotic process of coming up with a name for the Keeper in real time! (Sorry, Keeps, I kinda forgot about you woops)
Tumblr media
Picture of the Keeper
Usually I start out with a translator, in this case it's English to Greek.
Keeper - Fylax
If I like how it sounds I will then do some research on its meaning (and make sure it's relatively accurate).
Ok, so Fylax means keeper and guardian, someone who tends to something.
After that, I will reasearch similar spelling names depending on how normal this character is. The scale is ''The Old World Trio (Halcyon, Kato and Basile) -> Normal person (Carl)''.
Keeper is/was a normal humanoid before gaining the title (like Carl who became the Boatman), so let's try researching the name 'Felix'.
Felix means lucky! (The Latin origin is fine since Keeper is not as tied to their Greek inspiration as someone like Kato - Thanatos)
I will go check if Keeper's inspiration (Hermes) has anything to do with luck.
So apparently Hermes is the god of 'trade, wealth, luck (yay), fertility, animal husbandry (livestock, so caring for animals for a purpose. In this case, since souls don't eat the animals Keeper just keeps them happy for atmosphere.), sleep, language, thieves, and travel (Keeper travels a lot, so yeah it tracks)' copied from Google. Neat.
Keeper's gender reveal: She uses she/her pronouns, so either I use the name Felix as is or I can use it as a nickname, depends if I can find a full name which sounds good and correlates to the inspiration.
Well, in this case I like Felix! It's a cute and simple name and really suits the mischievous Keeper with her iconic flaming robes.
That was fun, and actually the least amount of brainstorming I did for a name so far. (The last easy name was Halcyon - Hypnos)

I didn’t realize I needed to say this lol
But Dottie isn’t my “chosen name”
So if I’m telling you my “real name” that doesn’t mean I’m giving you my birth name 🤣
Dottie is literally a pseudonym, or online name, and alias if you will!
If I tell you my real name, I mean I’m telling you my real name! It’s my chosen name, it’s ok to use it!
I hope this helps

I’m so torn with the character design for Maeve’s dragon….
On one hand, I had this idea for her to have a male dragon named Blackbeard. A fun callback to the pirate (though he doesnt exist in this universe, I think the sailing connection is cool) and the dragon would be white on top and ya know.. black on the jaw and underbelly
But I also want to be super self indulgent and give her a purple she-dragon. Bc if I had a dragon, I’d want it to be purple and shoot green flames 😭💀

picking a new name is hard because you have to be like. does this feel right for my friends to call me? does it match my vibe? is it more feminine/masculine? will i be taken seriously by people who control certain aspects of my life? does it go well with middle/last name? and ultimately do i like it and feel comfortable with it?

A guide to name your Elven characters in Tolkien's universe
I write LOTR and Silm fanfictions, and always struggle to name my Elven characters, but I think I hacked the system!
Note that this works for both Quenya and Sindarin names, and any other Elvish language you might want to name your character in.
Elvish names, whether given by the parents or chosen later in life, are always composed by two elements/words, and have a meaning related to the character's fate/personnality/ family/appearance. Example: Russandol (Maedhros' epessë) means copper-top, refering to his red hair. The melody/sonority of the name is also very important because Elvish languages are melodious and focused on the aesthetic of the sounds. For High Elves, there is also the fact that most of them have at least one Quenya and one Sindarin name, and the Noldor have the tradition to give two names to their children, one chosen by the father and one by the mother. It's a lot of names...
Now, one can use a generator to name an Elf character, but I rarely like the result and end up perusing this very handy website: Welcome! - Parf Edhellen: an elvish dictionary (elfdict.com) to compose my own names.
But, guess what, Elvish names are not the only ones with meanings! All the names in our own world have a meaning/ethymology. And that's where I found a trick to compose credible names for Elves: translate real world names.
I'll give you three examples of various complexity:
First, an easy one with Mary, the most common feminine name in the world, which means "beloved"
in Quenya melda = beloved, dear as it is too short for an Elvish name, you can add a feminine suffix like -iel = daughter, girl or -wen = maiden these suffix also make sense with the whole Virgin Mary thing...
Anyways, Mary would become Meldaiel or Meldawen, wich is a very nice and generic name for a background character or a lower-class Elf.
In Sindarin we have mell = beloved -iel = daughter, girl -wen = maiden
Which becomes Melliel or Mellwen. It's not very different from the Quenya form but it's still distinct.
Second, you cand chose the name of an historical figure that resemble your Elven character and translate it. Let's go with Alexander, like Alexander the Great. This name means "protector of men" or "defending men", from the ancient Greek aléxein = to ward off, to defend and andrós = man.
Let's look how to transpose these words in Quenya alatya- = to ward off, to protect sanda = shield nér = man
And this give us Alatyanér (ward off-man), or the more imaged variant Sandanér (shield-man). Actually, these names soud rather close to the original... Anyways, here you have a name for a soldier or an Elvish Capitain, with a nice nod to an historical figure.
And the Sindarin version would be beria = protect thand = shield dîr = man
And it would give Beriadir, or Thandir. Again, good names for soldiers, and there are many characters in LOTR and the Silm with names ending in -dir.
Finally, an example of a complex name with my middle name, because that's the first I tried to translate in Elvish. Camille is an unisex name that comes from Latin and means "young cult officiant" or "noble child who helps a priest", more accurately it describes a young boy from a noble family who would hold a role during the public sacrifces in the Roman Empire, which is quite a mouthful you'll agree. But let's identify the key elements of this meaning and compose an Elvish name with a similar meaning that respects the naiming rules of Tolkien's Elves: there are the ideas of religious role/place, of youth and of nobility.
in Quenya that gives us hína = child yána = holy place, sanctuary or corda = temple (closest words to cult or altar I could find) ara- = prefix meaning noble
So, depending on which meaning of the name I want to emphasis, I could translate Camille as Arahína (noble-child), Yánahína (sancruary-child) or Cordahína (temple-child)
In Sindarin the process is the same, wich gives us hên = child iaun = sanctuary ar- = noble
So the result would be either Arhên or Iaunhên, depending on the meaning you prefer.
And here is my little guide to construct your own Elvish names for a fanfiction. I hope that it'll be useful or at least interesting.

Stop introducing yourself with you actual name. Fuck that! Just give em the meaning of your name and make them guess. Like straight up:
Wolf Shield, now guess what means.
Than they gave to figure out what name means that. And also who in the world basically names their child, Wolf Shield. Confused the masses, cause chaos. Your names boring, pick a new one and use it's definition boom.

not that anybody needed to hear this today but the dad from back to the future is played by a man literally and legally named CRISPIN. HELLION. GLOVER. like, his parents named him that. as a kid.
he grew up with that name.
like they named him crispin because of shakespeare’s “henry v”. and his middle name was supposed to be herbert but his dad hated it and kept insisting on the name hellion and then he just like… changed his son’s name. like he called him hellion enough that he was like “time to level up from a nickname to a full on replacement name”…
every time i think about this man and how messed up he is i remember this and i’m like “it explains some things. not all, definitely not all. but some”

Free name headcanons, get ‘em while they’re hot!
Note that I do Not speak Chinese and I am Not completely certain about any of these But! I have tried looking to see if other people have made posts about given name headcanons for some of the cast that only have courtesy names and found nothing so if I am Wrong I hope someone will please take pity and correct me. Nie Huaisang -- 涧 Jian, Mountain stream. Nie Mingjue -- 峰 Feng, Mountain peak. Nie Zonghui -- 峥 Zheng, lofty (of a mountain)
You probably noticed the theme! My only justification is “wouldn’t it be neat if it was a naming tradition among the Nie for the actual family to have like, cool environmental names?” and I don’t know enough about the language to come up with something fancy and clever so everybody is literally just getting named for Parts Of The Mountain. As far as I could find Zheng is actually technically a surname but I also didn’t find anything saying it couldn’t be a given name? If I’m wrong plz ups a bomb to my house at your earliest convenience UwU
Ouyang Zizhen -- 胜 Sheng, to defeat/to surpass/to be victorious
Old man sect leader Ouyang wants to be big and important so bad and he’s fully heaping all those dreams and expectations onto his kid. Sorry Zizhen.
Mo Xuanyu -- 丽 Li, beautiful Mama Mo -- 爱 Ai, love/affection
The only thing we really know about Xuanyu is that he likes to wear makeup. Me being me, I’m gonna stretch that one (1) trivia fact into an entire character trait! Some of the only memories he has of his mother is that she liked pretty things, and whenever she could she would show them to him. Not just finely-crafted jewelry or intricately embroidered robes (although those too) but also beauty in nature, and stories, and music. Naturally, to her, there was nothing in the world more beautiful than her baby, and she told him that every day. And now all of us are sad.
Lan Jingyi --  欣 Xin, happy, joyful, delighted
My personal headcanons for the parents of the most un-Lan Lan are that they were pretty un-Lan Lans themselves; I like to think Jingyi’s father in particular was a loud, cheerful man who smiled a lot and loved to make new friends. Especially since Jingyi was def born during Sunshot, I think happiness is a good thing to hope for for your kid.
Jin Zixuan -- 富 Fu, rich, abundant, wealthy
This one was actually kind of a fuck you from Guanshan. The Jin have money. As far as he’s concerned, that’s all that really matters? His kid is gonna be Richer Than You and there’s nothing you can do about it. No, he hasn’t put any actual thought into what kind of person his son is going to grow up to be or what hopes he has for his heir’s future, he doesn’t view his son as a person.

Tried naming my characters, still not sure on these yet but I think I can get used to some of them. Their nicknames are in brackets (at least I tried my best) :')
Halcyon, Hypnos, Sleep
- Halcyon (Yon/Hal) I like this one a lot, halcyon can be used to mean something like the good old days or the golden days (halcyon days), a time in the past where everything was better. The nickname was Yon since Hypnos is the god of sleep, and we yawn when we're sleepy, but Hal can also work (means salt). Overall it suits Halcyon's role in the story as a symbol of the past.
Chrysos, Entos, Kato, Thanatos, Death
- Kato (Kato?) It's short and simple, it means something like down under, like the direction (below, beneath). It can also refer to the whereabouts of the underworld. For their nickname I've got nothing. I think it can tie into their downwards spiral into regret and mistakes, along with their role as a psychopomp (one who brings souls to the afterlife).
Arkhos, Vasi, Vasileio, Hades/Persephone, World
- Basile (Basil) Basil is a plant and he does plant things. Jokes aside, Basile means royal and regal, which fits him as he's the ruler of the underworld. His nickname Basil is straightforward, basically his name said in a different way.
Charos, Acheron, Carl, Charon, Boatman
- Carl (Carl?) It means free man, not so sure what that implies but I interpret that as a free spirited person. Carl also means peasant, and it sounds common enough to be considered a normal name for a normal kid. A normal kid who used that freedom to befriend a lost soul fragment seeking atonement.
Volare, Volaria, Frigatebird
- Volaria (Aria) Volare means to fly, which frigatebirds are very good at. It would be a shame if she were to lose that ability...
Ela, Fylax, Albatross, Hermes
- Felix (Felix) It means lucky and Hermes is a god of luck (and many more) and it sounds mischievous too. You can find my naming process in the names tag!
