May I share an opinion on the whole Aizawa critical thing? His philosophy of "expelling to give kids a taste of death" doesn't make a lot of sense, both Bakugou and Izuku were caught and nearly died in a villain attack, Mina and Kirishima diffused an villain attack and is still impacted, but aizawa implicitly treated them like they are all privileged sheltered kids discovering the stakes in heroics for the first time

yes exactly!! I kinda went off on this so I'm putting most of this post under a 'keep reading' but essentially: Aizawa's teaching method (mostly the expulsion part) is incredibly flawed because it was based around his own trauma (Oboro's death), and it doesn't do anything good for his students, instead only working to their detriment no matter how much bnha wants to prove the opposite.

One of Aizawa's biggest character flaws (and honestly I'm not mad about it – it's actually a super interesting/cool flaw of his and I wish people would point it out more) is that he never really believes or acts like anything bad ever happens to anyone until he's explicitly told about it, or he's shown it. I think he genuinely believes that every student at UA has been babied since birth except for him and a select few people because of their quirks (Shinso), and every impulsive thing they do is because they don't believe in the consequences until they're shown them via expulsion. He believes that he is the only one who sees the consequences of being a hero because he's one of the only people who's seen someone die – one of his best friends – on the job, and it’s his job to teach everyone else that single fact.

and in many cases that is true! characters like Bakugo or even Izuku don't really get that the hero world is really dangerous until they attend UA. As All Might himself tells Izuku – heroes are expected to put their lives on the line for people. And as All Might (and Aizawa) knows, All Might, who is responsible for crime going down by at least 2%, is going to retire soon. Crime is going to rise. This means deaths like Oboro’s are going to rise, and Endeavor isn’t anywhere near the level to carry the weight of #1 quite like All Might did.

The problem is, there are generations of people from Aizawa to Izuku who have only known the world that All Might created for them, and that world is going to die very soon with a very unprepared Japan suffering in the fallout. So in Aizawa’s mind, the best way to help these future heroes understand that All Might isn’t going to be around to save them is to give them consequences via expulsion. So at the beginning of the year, he puts them all on the same level (aka everyone is some spoiled kid who doesn’t know the consequences of their own actions) and threatens them via expulsion to make sure they realize that death exists and that their actions have consequences.

Unfortunately for Aizawa and his worldview, not everyone is some spoiled kid who has been babied since birth except for him. We all know Midoriya’s situation is an abnormal one, I don’t think anyone would guess that a formerly quirkless child would be entering into the school with a quirk they just got that day, but as you stated both Bakugo, Kirishima, and Mina alone have been faced with real-world near-death scenarios and have survived. Hell, Bakugo and Midoriya’s Sludge Villain incident had made its way into the news! Midoriya and Bakugo nearly died and it was on the news, yet Aizawa still felt it apt to threaten Midoriya with expulsion (extra death) because he didn’t feel that Midoriya was trying hard enough with his quirk.

Why? He already nearly died once (twice technically but Aizawa doesn’t know that), there’s no need to ‘kill’ him again. Is it because All Might saved him and therefore Aizawa needs to push that All Might won’t always be around to help him by threatening him in a space where All Might has no power? Did Aizawa just not see or forget that Midoriya and Bakugo nearly died? Why does he threaten him here in front of his entire class? What purpose does it serve for Midoirya’s development? (there’s also a case to be made where he’s biased against Midoriya in the beginning simply because All Might likes him, but that’s a whole other discussion)

And of course, that’s just Midoriya. It’s bad enough that a kid who’s always been pushed down by other people up until this point is being threatened by yet another person who doesn’t believe in him, but what about the other kids? What about Todoroki, who has a powerful quirk but has been abused by his father since his quirk developed? What about Uraraka, who would probably do more heroic but illegal things within the series (like saving Bakugo) if her entire family’s well-being and livelihood didn’t hinge on the fact that she stayed in school and didn’t get expelled by the most hard-ass teacher in series. What about students with delicate situations that can’t afford to be expelled because of their circumstances?

Instead of doing or being heroic, they’d be putting all their focus into hopefully not getting expelled, following the rules, keeping their heads down, instead of, y’know, trusting the adults in their life and questioning authority when need be. If they do get expelled, at the very least it’ll keep a black stain on their records that will follow them for the rest of their careers, and they’ll have to explain how they got expelled from the most prestigious hero school in Japan time and time again, annoying at most and career-destroying at the worst. At the very most, it puts these kids in danger from their guardians. That’s terrifying.

For example, if Shoto got expelled, at the very least Endeavor would call in a complaint like a regular old Karen. At the very most (aka Fanon interpretations of Endeavor) Shouto would get his ass beat six ways to Sunday. Or, the more in-canon option, Endeavor would take up Shoto’s training full time, which is also not good and very dangerous for him. Either way, it's trouble for Shoto because Aizawa assumed that Shoto was a spoiled kid and needed to be taught a lesson.

And sure, Aizawa doesn’t expel anyone in 1-A, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has expelled students before, and as a result, a majority of them (re: class 2-A) don’t really like him or respect him. Aside from literally one girl, they think he’s scary. They don’t like him. Being a hardass teacher is one thing, being a hardass teacher who people like and respect despite the no-nonsense bullshit is another thing. And aside from class 1-A (it's important to note that none of them have gotten expelled from his class and have even trauma bonded with him) and that one 2-A girl, they don’t like or respect him. They fear him. And for as funny as that is, that’s not the sign of a good teacher.

It’s not necessarily lazy teaching since he does it with a purpose, but it’s not right. He’s basically giving his students the teaching equivalent of tough parenting, and as most people on the internet know, tough parenting only leads to negative consequences for the victims (the students). And furthermore, it's obvious he only does this because of his trauma with Oboro's death. Expulsion isn't traumatic, like I stated earlier it depends on the situation how serious being expelled would be for a student, but if you think about it this way – that Aizawa purposefully traumatizes/scares/hurts/destroys the trust of students in a completely different way from how he was traumatized to teach them a lesson without 'consequence' – that's not good! That's terrible, even, and incredibly harmful in the long run.

We even see the negative consequences of Aizawa's expulsion method in Aizawa himself! The consequences of Oboro's death (which expulsion is supposed to emulate) on him are detrimental to him – he goes into a very serious depression to the point where he'll only do the bare minimum to pass classes, and he isolates himself from his friends. We're explicitly shown that what he's doing isn't helping him or doing him any favors and it's only through healing from his trauma that he actually starts to get better. And he wants to do this to other students (albeit on a smaller scale) to teach them the same lesson he learned? What the hell! Who thought this was right?

(Nezu bc he authorized it but eh. That guy lives for chaos.)

I love Aizawa, really I do, but this expulsion game really isn't right.

BNHA X DP Crossover HCs

After the long wait and finals, here are my ideas for all the quirks/occupations and other concepts I devised for the DP characters in the BNHA universe. This was just for fun and for inspiration towards others interested in this crossover au in general.

Tagging the people that were looking forward to this post based on the replies: @qoinq-qhost, @floralflowerpower, @tgfangirl4eva @goodfish-bowl, @whitehairglowinggreeneyedcrush and more.

Mr. Lancer

Hero name: Mr. Scholastic

Quirk: Bookworm

Involves his iconic usage of literature titles & quotes for swears to become abilities corresponding to the novel’s contents/themes. Course, he is limited to only books he has read and can quote accurately. Additionally, his voice gets very raspy past two or three quotes as well.

Occupation: Homeroom Teacher for Class 1- A; He’s very dedicated to his new students and teaching the fundamentals of being a pro hero and more! Course, I don’t think his chamomile tea with a wedge of lemon is enough to help him relax from his students (*cough* Danny, Tucker and Poindexter) from their antics at times.

Danny

Hero name: Phantom

Quirk: Ghost core (Ok, @coffeecakecafe had the best name for this one gotta give credit here)

Able to do anything a ghost is perceived to do. Go through walls, disappear and fly. This is a one of a kind quirk as it was obtained from Danny’s old quirk being altered by a machine his parents made that would repurpose/alter an individual’s quirk based on their past family members' own metahuman genetics.

Danny is doing his best and trying to understand his new quirk without causing too much attention to himself while doing so but it seems like its been doing the opposite as of late. Thankfully, he won’t be doing it alone with all his classmates around to help him!

Sam

Hero Name: Black Dahlia

Quirk: Overgrown

Able to create any plant that she knows the biological makeup and content of in almost any environment. However, it is important for her to drink lots of nutrient rich water and take in enough sun if she plans to create larger versions of these plants.

Tucker

Hero name: Tech Master

Quirk: Tech Core

Located on his chest/heart area is a special energy core capable of powering electronics at a rate faster than anything made-man could ever hope to achieve. As a kid, Tucker would tinker away in his family’s garage on a suit that would harness his power to the fullest extent and lead a new era of support tech in the hero world.

Valerie

Hero name: Red Huntress

Quirk: Electromagnetism (Someone I’ve been trying to find their post on my blog had posted this idea and I fell in love with it ever since)

She’s like Static Shock but with a dash of magenta/ruby lasers she can create through focusing her electromagnetism through her finger tips. She is an expert with her quirk and has the best handle of her quirk than most of her peers. She is the most frequent visitor in the support equipment workshop next to Tucker, Poindexter and Danny. It’s how she built the hoverboard she has in the show that utilizes her electromagnetic abilities for both offensive and defensive maneuvers. (Also, I enjoy the idea that Bullet is Val’s uncle on her mom’s side and is her biggest supporter alongside her dad, Damien Gray).

Jazz

Quirk: Serenity

Helps calm individuals and give them a sense of safety/security when they’re around her in a 10 feet radius. Though, anyone out of range cannot be affected by her quirk and she needs to be conscious in order to use it.

She planned on becoming a pro hero but felt her powers were best suited for her dream profession as a psychologist. She has used her quirk a lot when Danny was overwhelmed with his studies prior to UA. Course, a phone call and sibling chat over the phone certainly does the job for Danny now when it comes to preparing material for exams. (Course, its up to you guys to decide)

Dash

Hero name: Rager

Quirk: Strength Magnification

Improves his physique and stamina by a large percentage for a set amount of time. Needs to be careful of how much/long he magnifies his body or else his body will become immensely sore.

Kwan

Hero name: Rallier

Quirk: Team Rally (50/50)

Able to duplicate himself 3-4 times while being able to power-up allies’ quirks or stamina with a rally chant to help the team. The more duplicates there are the rally effect multiplies/stacks on the individual but it can lead to dangerous outcomes for their quirk output.

Kwan is the class representative for 1-A, he’s the best at the job and was more than thrilled to be the one leading his class in more ways than one.

Paulina

Hero name: Enchantress

Quirk: Charm

If the opponent is flustered by her taunts or flirting, their vision will become altered and start seeing things that are not there. It works better on men than women and the opponent can snap out of it with enough willpower or if they’re not interested in her.

Star

Hero name: Ms. Meteorite

Quirk: Comet

Similar to Gran Torino’s Jet quirk except faster and she can create an explosive impact on where she lands. Similar to a meteorite landing on earth, she also learns to use this as a long distance move by punching fast enough as she descends to create wind pressure punches.

Poindexter

Hero name: Tex (like in Tex Avery; Danny gave him the idea!)

Quirk: Slapstick

His appearance is black and white just like an old timey cartoon character as well as having the durability and cartoon powers of one. However, his quirk can only work as long as what he does with it is funny in the circumstance it’s used for. Sort of like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” rules in a sense.

Sidney is part of Class 1-A just saying, I don’t care, this is Poindexter’s time to shine here to be the coolest/funniest person in the class. Also, Tucker’s most loyal friend/tester for new support items.

Wes Weston

Hero name: Vigilance

Quirk: Deduction

He is able to deduct people’s identities to flaws/weak points for him to use against them and exploit against problems.

Class 1-B Representative and the most annoying/terrifying person that Danny has dealt with in his life. He was able to figure out that Danny’s quirk is not his own or more so that it's not natural and takes every opportunity to state this regardless if anyone is listening or not.

Amber Mclain

Hero Name: Ember

Quirk: Fiery voice (50/50)

Her quirk uses the vibrations in her sining voice to conduct intense heat waves onto opponents or utilize to rumble the structures around here and even put out the flames from her quirk. Its like a combination of Present Mic and Endevours quirk but it leaves her with a strained or inflamed vocal cords with overuse.

Third year student or an upcoming rock star that has certainly gain huge popularity after her song “Remember” was a nationwide hit amongst the younger generation. She’s striving to be the top hero while making her next hit to become the 1# song on the listings.

Dani

Hero name: Phantwo (lol jk; unsure what her name would be)

Quirk: Poltergeist

Similar to Danny’s quirk “Ghost”, except she has the additional ability to melt herself to a slimy puddle and use her ectoplasmic slime to trap or surprise opponents.

Clockwork

Hero Name: Clockwork

Quirk: Time Keeper

Clockwork’s quirk allows him to stop time for 5 to 15 minutes and be able to rewind it in the same amount of time. It can be one to multiple objects as long as he touches them in order to interact with them.

Principle of UA in this au. He’s quite a reserved man but still manages to visit and congregate with students throughout the school during lunch period.

Flynn Fenton/Flynn Walker

Hero Name: The Green Knight

Quirk: Mineralization

His quirk allows him to manipulate the minerals and inorganic materials in the atmosphere to create into crystalized constructs that are almost stronger than diamond. Luckily, the crystals have no value so he doesn’t have to worry about that aspect of his quirk. He does have to worry about his skin becoming dried out as a result of his quirk usage.

Flynn is a third year student that loves to check up on his cousin, Danny, any chance he gets bc of the amount of work he does with his internships.

James Walker (or James W. Hausermann)

Hero name: Warden Wraith

Quirk: Plasma Apparatus

His quirk ionizes the electrolytes in the blood system into plasma. His entire body is composed of plasma giving him his skeletal appearance. He can create plasma chains, teleport from point A to B and more as long as he focuses and has enough energy at use. Course, he can have minor to severe dehydration and imbalance in his electrolyte levels from overuse.

Occupation: CEO of an infrastructure security company/Provisional License Examiner just like Gang Orca.The ghost prison guards become his backup/helpers for the exam phases. (They’re just trained stuntmen with combat or military experience for the occasion).

Also, I like to think Walker has kids in this au who are in the Class 1-A group; they’re not hard to spot they take after their father with their skeletal complexion.

Skulker

Villain name: Quirk Hunter

Quirk: Tracker

The moment Skulker makes eye contact with his target he will be able to hunt them down and find them anywhere no matter how good they are at covering their tracks. He can lock on to only one target, but he will be able to know their heart beat, quirk, be able to place a tracking/scent line that only he can see and will lead him to his target’s location. It lasts for over a day or a half.

Occupation: Skulker is known for capturing, info-detailing or “retiring” newcomer pros or specific quirk users for his clients that pay him handsomely for their targets, dead or alive. Thanks to Vlad, Danny was strictly intended to be captured alive by Skulker but sometimes he gets too thrilled by the hunt to not have a memento. Trust me, it's more of a dangerous

Nicolai Technus

Villain Name: Technus

Quirk: Technopathy

A genius in his own right, even if he’s a little crazy, with the best ability possible for a man of science and innovation. As long as he knows the makeup and attributes of the machine, Technus is able to completely repurpose or change a machine’s qualities for offensive and defensive qualities. Whenever that be for a mech suit or hacking a high tech system for entry, he’s able to do it as long as he knows what it is and how it functions. An example is repurposing a slot machine into a submachine gun that shoots coins at the target.

Vlad Masters

Name: Vlad Plasmius

Quirk: Vampire

Can do anything a vampire can supposedly do. However, he was able to manifest an additional aspect of this quirk which is the ability to copy any quirk users ability. Based on the type of blood he ingests decides the amount of time he can use the copied quirk for.

Occupation: CEO of his own hero firm, he is extremely selective with the interns he has that there is a major waitlist to be even consider for Masters Inc. Course, imagine the surprise Danny must of felt when he received an offer from Vlad right off the bat after the Sports festival.

Bruce Guiles (Bullet)

Hero Name: Bullet

Quirk: Sphyraena or Chimera Fish

Able to do anything a barracuda can do or the quirk is a 50/50 mutant quirk in which he has both the traits of a barracuda, Chimaeras and a touch of piranha from his parents being of one of these fish species hence Chimera. Bullet can do anything those fish can do overall but he can’t go too long without hydration from water. Water quality and its oxygen content also affect his abilities by a noticeable percentage but he still remains quite formidable as a quirk user.

Occupation: Captain of a coast guard team, he’s a strict military man with an amazing record of saving people from any disasters both on land and sea. Him and Walker are best buddies ever since they went to school together.

Vortex

Hero Name: Vortex

Quirk: Storm Warning

Vortex can utilize any variation of a natural disaster depending on the environment he’s in. Hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, you name it he can create it for his use. However, despite his amazing control over his quirk it is still possible for him to create these disasters if he lost control or magnify another pre-existing one if he loses focus.

Occupation: Storm-chaser/Forecaster; His control and knowledge in combating/predicting these natural disasters has led to him to be part of a storm chasing crew and they’re the best in helping disaster prevention teams evacuate citizens as a result.

Petra Eris

Hero name: Pandora

Quirk: Butterfly Effect

Can manipulate or prevent a chaotic event to happen if she was in proximity and present to prevent it to happen. Or even give a little chaos to the opponent to deal with during battle.

One of the top ten heroes and most beloved heroes in the country. She is the best strategist in any team and has a way to predict any event before they happen given the necessity of it for her quirk to work in her favor.

Johnny

Vigilante name: Johnny 13

Quirk: Unlucky

Johnny manifests his bad luck into a shadow that will latch onto opponents and cause unfortunate events to occur more for that individual as a result. However, the shadow cannot exist in complete sunlight; it can only remain if there are already shadows in his general area or it’s nighttime and its effects are strongest at that time obviously.

Occupation: Johnny is the leader of a biker gang or de-facto leader of said biker gang who loves to raise hell and helping folks that need saving whenever he’s around or is up to the task. Kitty tags along with him to help him out of jams and bc she loves him. :3

Kitty

Vigilante name: Kitty

Quirk: Lovesick

Kitty sends a smooch towards her opponent which if it makes contact causes the individual to have nausea or become disoriented for around 10 minutes. It can also have a chance of lasting longer if the individual was sort of infatuated with her regardless of gender.

Pariah Dark

Villain name: King Pariah

Quirk: Ultimate Adaptation

Similar to all for one except with the unpredictability for both the user and opponents. Pariah can manifest any type of quirk needed to defeat anyone that stands in his way both one-on-one and in groups. Course, drawbacks are the learning curve to some of the quirks and that multiple adaptions he utilizes at once will destroy his cells in the process.

Pariah is a former follower of all for one who had unique quirk that All for one augmented to help him succeed if both Shigaraki and Tomura failed in their own conquest for the world. But now Pariah has his own plans to succeed where they failed and become the leader who shapes a new world order with an iron fist.

Frederick Kingsmen

Villain/vigilante name: Fright Knight

Quirk: Burning Energy Infusion

Able to form/infuse objects with his own burning energy life force that is capable of burning or slicing through any in his sight. The sweat he gives off is what provides the material needed to ignite his unnatural flames despite it causing his body to overheat still.

Fright Knight is Pariah’s second-in-command with a loyalty to him as strong as his control over his power. Fright Knight has faced many pro-heros as he carried out the smaller phases of Pariah’s plans and most of them barely came close towards defeating or leaving as much as scratch on the knight.

Rodolfo Gonzalo

Hero name: Wulf

Quirk: Werewolf + Portal creation (50/50?)

Can do anything a werewolf can supposedly do; somehow it allows him to create portals with his claws to locations he has marked with them or visited in the past.

Wulf was abducted on by Pariah’s forces and sent into the Nomu labs for experimentation to force on another quirk and instill complete allegiance to their cause. Course, Wulf broke free as a result of that new additional quirk allowing him to escape their clutches and his previous one helping him survive the endeavor. However, he lost his memories in the process and could only remember his native language, Spanish, and his hero name Wulf.

Overgrown

Villain/vigilante Name: Overgrown

Quirk: Plant Manipulation

Can manipulate any pre-existing plant matter or create new vegetation if water and soil is present for the process or he understand the biological makeup of the plant in question.

Occupation: Pro-hero or eco-terrorist who is tired of humanity from abusing the environment from quirk battles to industries using the land for their own benefits and none others.

Heyy, i just wanted to ask what do you think about bnha’s 315 leaks or the storyline. I’m personally really disappointed so im just wondering if you feel the same way

Sorry for late answer, anon. I am waiting for story to progress cause i really dont know where it goes right now but my general thought about latest chapters is;

First, the thing bothers me the most is the people Deku work together;

Hawks, Best Jeanist, especially Endeavour etc.

One of the most problematic characters in series. The biggest flaw os those characters is lack of growing, not seeing their faults and not really changing.

You are not the one who judge Afo, Endeavour cause you used your family for your selfish goals too. (I really hope Endeavour and others doent get away with what they did.)

By the way, Lady Nagant's story is really interesting but i feel like its really rushed and ended quickly.

Also didnt like how Deku easiely defeat her, it doesnt make sense, just like how Bakugou's always winning or how them defeating Nine etc doesnt make sense...of.

And for someone who sick of faults of society and reached her breaking point, i feel like she was convinced too easiely. I find it a little unrealistic.

Like i said, refusing to seeing their faults is the problem with heroes. I dont think Hawks's being optimistic. He is being ignorant, turning a back to what he did to Twice. This is not a good thing. (I hope author doesnt justify it cause they are heroes and i find it ridicilous the part when she said Hawks has heroic eyes -_-).

And good part about those chapters is Deku pays more attention to villains words. He wont just dismiss them (Though its still not very good way to do it, lets say baby steps.)

He is listening their stories, believing in redemption and change. In past, he wouldnt do that. (I really loved the answer he gave to Overhaul.)

But just let me remind you, Deku, you cant just get rid of problems by saying everything's grey. If you think Overhaul should be punished for what he did to Eri, then you should think the same for Endeavour. I think this is what Deku still lacks as character. He shows empathy for villains which is great but there is no point, if he doesnt really acknowledge the faults of pro heroes.

Deku right now acts like a Batman, he fights mostly alone, having a few talks with villains, playing the justice, he destroy or try to help them, depending on their answers. This kind of behavour kinda reminds me of Stain.

Its still not enough character development but compared to before, its a step cause Deku used to be blinded soldier but now he is on streets and facing/interacting with the dark sides of society more.

While Deku acts like Batman, Afo acts like Joker. We will see where this will go. We might see Deku's being more violent cause of Afo's pushing him corner, we might get more interactions between villains and Deku.

Right now, What Deku needs by his side is young generation, people who will question the faults of society. Like Uraraka, Todoroki and others. He needs to be with them. As long as he isolates and push himself, things will only get harder for everyone. Maybe, Deku will realize this, after he gets pushed by Afo. He might realize how he shouldnt separate himself from his friends. If Deku abandons his humanity, he cant help people. This is why Deku needs them. I hope he realize this.

Let's unpack this because this is more than just an opinion about anime and hopefully what I write can change your opinion on a lot of things going forward in your life. Which is an opportunity I am very happy about. A lot of people really get upset when you call something "ist". Racist, Ableist, Cissexist, etc. Or the phobic words.. You get my meaning. But the upset over it shows that people mistake what is really being said because we think very simplistically about this - that everyone who is an "ist" or a "phobe" is inherently a bad person.

Why? It's due to a lot of people getting caught up in individual actions over the societal motivations behind them. So, if I was to say "every white person is racist" or "every man is a misogynist" it feels like an unfair absolute, right? Not all people are like that, right? What if someone is actively trying to be an exception? The point blank statement feels mean, right? How could you just generalize?

Here's the thing, the reason the general statement is made is because it more talks about society than individuals. What I mean is this - not every white person (in the US or West, though we can talk about other places too) is actively being bigoted, but we are born in societies that have historically (and today too!) been built and profited off the oppression or exploitation of people of color. And like in a lot of things dealing with unfair power structures, there's a lot of motivation to make sure shit does not change you know, which is why people end up, even if they don't realize what they are doing, defending things. Are they trying to be actual bigots? No, not always, and something to learn is that a lot of these ism do not equal just plain bigotry. There's always a power structure behind it, or an imbalance. So, you can find someone who is bigoted but isn't actually being an 'ist'. When a lot of people complain about 'reverse' anything, what they are usually talking about is bigotry, which is an individual action that on its own doesn't confirm or defend a power structure.

I know this is a bit complicated. It took me a few years to grasp it too, but understanding the difference is really important.

Now, let's go back to Bakugou. In my post about Deku and Inko and how Deku states how much her initial reaction to his quirkless was hurt him for much of his childhood, I did mention that Inko admitted she didn't support him. So there's no argument about whether she did or didn't because Inko took accountability for her mistake. Now, the reason she did it in the first place was because she grew up in a society that tells people quirks are their personalities.

I made a post a couple weeks ago about Deku and Hawks and being 'selected' out of their circumstances where I talk about how the Quirkless are sort of seen as lesser humans simply due to the way Quirk society has folded. You can see it the older name given to Ujiko before the changes, and in Izuku being read as 'Deku'; the implication is of wooden people, puppets, etc. Then you have lots of ranting on the MLA part that revealed that a there kid's books that teach kids people aren't always their Quirks but that this is seen as a very PC concept and not really taken in by the population. Sure the average person probably isn't a Geten level supremacist, but we see how the Fox lady was treated when she was walking outside by her neighbors, or how Spinner was bullied, even by his own family, or just what Endeavor did to 'fix his quirk'.

Inko is a 4th generation quirk owner. That means one, or more, of her great-grandparents have been quirk users. Dr. Tsubasa, upon seeing Deku, also says it's rare for someone to be like him these days, implying the statistic given to us by the manga, or the 4:5 are quirk owners, is very much based on age (I've seen people put forth it might also be location based too). Toshinori adds to this by saying it was more common when he was a kid, and he is likely in his 50s.

Okay, so that's the society Izuku is born too, right? Stay with me, I know this is long but we're getting to Katsuki right now.

In the ask that you messaged about where I explain why Inko's initial problem can be criticized, I said what she did is very similar to how parents treat children with disabilities or illnesses. Hence, why you said I was calling her ableist. As I've been trying to explain in this ask Inko may not be actively trying to be 'ableist' and bigoted, but her apologizing to her son was an issue that he felt insecure over. And that this is of course tied into the fact quirk society does not treat the Quirkless well.

You see this early set of panels? This was Deku explaining that Katsuki only began to bully him really when he manifested his quirk. Why? Because there was a clear difference in the way he was treated and the way Deku was.

These panels show Katsuki looking at Deku and seeing how he's being talked about. Children are impressionable and understand that there are these dynamics even if they don't get why. Katsuki is being told here that he's amazing, that he's going to achieve greatness, and being praised. Deku is being whispered about, pitied. They are not the same. It even goes into their teens:

Katsuki is immediately praised even if he was the one in need of rescue. Deku's actions bought time for All Might but he's seen as reckless especially when he's Quirkless. I've said in the post I linked that Deku's amazing traits - his natural skill at analysis, his quick wits and reactions, and dauntless nature are really where he shines, but until he had a quirk, that society didn't see any of that about him. This is a clear example of how much importance people place on quirks. So is it any wonder in a society like this that a little kid like Katsuki soaks it all in?

Deku also calls Katsuki a bully a few times. I'm not going to post the panels here but I collected a few so there's an absolute acknowledgment on Deku's part that he is bullied for being quirkless.

As I said in the previous ask, you can't remove a lot of these actions from greater societal trends. I also, personally, refuse to label Katsuki as an abuser because he is a child and abuse is usually a very intimate thing which is not the relationship Katsuki had as a former friend. He was, however, a bully who does bigoted things like tell Deku to jump off a roof if he wants to be a hero so he can get quirk in the next life. So, he was bullying out of bigotry and doing so out of societal norms and ideals that he has absorbed growing up.

Most children that are bullied are bullied on differences, and a lot of the time it really does fall on the same divides that as adults turn into oppressions. The children's bullying reinforces the same dynamics marginalized faces outside of childhood.

So, to finally answer your question, if 'quirklessness' is pretty much a bnha-verse disability and is treated very similarly some that we have in real life, then yes, Katsuki as a child and a tween was indeed 'ableist'. But again, this is not remarkable..I don't want to say he's exceptionally bigoted even since so much of it was also fueled by his own insecurities and cognitive dissonance when it comes to Izuku. And unlike Inko, who unconsciously hurt Izuku, Katsuki did so actively but, again, he was a child and he is capable of maturing, reforming, and learning which I think perhaps he might be heading to. EDIT: a few hours after I posted this, he apologized to Izuku so he has gotten there! Katsuki was this was because he was raised to be, so outright condemning a 16 year old for a norm doesn't really solve the real issue that it was a norm, does it?

Now, I will say for victims, it's often very hard to parse this too. Even if it's normalized, the individual bigotry of a person does hurt, and it really doesn't matter to kids that it's other kids. It's why a lot of people who are marginalized will bring up childhood memories, because we are shaped so much by our experiences as kids. But kids don't always have cognitive ability to challenge the norms and ideals around them, it's one of the biggest differences between an adult and a child. Making Katsuki out to be 'biggest bigot ever' is not what I am trying do with this ask, and it's silly to think so.

I will thank you for giving me the opportunity to write this answer. I often forget that my style of applying what seem to me very basic concepts in discussions of identity to anime analysis are not as basic I assume. Your ask seemed incredulous but it reads as someone genuinely new to the concept of societal vs individual actions, and how oppression and strata work with that. I hope that whatever you gained from this ask is something you can apply to a realize situation in the future by the dynamics I speak are real life ones, with genuine real consequences, and I'm happy I can use a manga as teaching or outreach tool. Thank you for allowing to do so.

Idk if this is unpopular but I think quirk singularity is a dumb plot device. What is the need for it in the story?

I feel the opposite - I think Quirk Singularity is absolutely necessary at this point to make the OFA-AFO plot at least somewhat interesting.

1. Let’s recap what is quirk singularity?

Quirk singularity means that (1) with each generation powers become more complex and stronger (2) this means quirk will be more difficult to control, since the human body doesn't evolve quickly enough to keep up (3) there will come a point when Quirks will become too overpowered and complicated, and no one will be able to control them anymore.

Basically, quirk singularity puts a limit on the power a single person can hold and poses an interesting and complex ultimate threat at the level of society that relies on ever-increasing powers to solve its problems. How can you solve the problem with more power if more power is the problem itself?

2. How the limits quirk singularity presented manifest in the story and why they are important?

Powers having a drawback is essential for good the story-telling. There is nothing more boring than characters who are so powerful that they can always do whatever they want, there is no real danger, real stakes and at most they are inconvenienced from using their power. It’s difficult to put such characters in suspenseful or dramatic scenarios where the audience really feel that they may lose or fail.

So in the BNHA universe, generally, all people have a single quirk. All these quirks are limited in some way or have some built-in drawbacks:

- Top-level quirk with versatility, but still with soft upper limits (there is always a plus ultra at a price), the holder’s personality flaws lead to self-sabotage (e.g. Bakugou, Endeavor)

- Top level quirk with versatility and no hard upper limit, but the holder can’t fully wield it unless they overcome underlying trauma linked to the power itself (e.g. Todoroki)

- Top power-level quirk with a single ultimate weakness (Hawks, Tokoyami, Aizawa) or the use of which starts a cooldown period (Kaminari) or the power is limited for stockpile resource (Eri, Momo)

- Mid-level powers that can do one thing really well (Kirishima, Iida, Mina) or more support nature powers that are versatile but do not have a lot of raw output attached to fragile users (Froppy, Jirou)

- low-level powers.

But the Top Good (OFA) and Top Evil (AFO) are not limited to a single power - they can acquire multiple powers.

AFO’s power limitation is how much quirks his body can absorb. As evidenced by the existence of the nomu - multiple powers usually come at the price of losing one’s humanity. But luckily for AFO, he has Evil Scientist as sidekick, who can find a way around this problem by evil sciencing (modifying a body to create hosts for AFOs upgrades).

OFA is a power that started out weak and has been built through generations through self-sacrifice to reach the point where it could compete with AFO, but not quite eliminate it (All Might era).

Without quirk singularity, this battle of evil and good would continue forever without stakes until AFO and OFA-users are chucking planets at each other, but now OFA has reached it’s full potential and the tipping point where it cannot be transferred anymore, creating a now-or-never situation to defeat AFO.

This puts the protagonist under some pressure and creates some stakes. If he can’t win, everyone is doomed. (Unfortunately we already know that Deku will not fail because it’s stated in Chapter 1, so it’s not exactly the biggest suspense, but better than nothing)

3. How could quirk singularity apply better to OFA ?

So we saw with AFO, how quirk singularity is a real barrier to his continuous power-ups. Failed nomu, the damage to Tomura’s body, the mental problems caused by the quirk upgrades are all interesting limits.

In contrast, OFA’s limits I think were not very well handled. Especially, because of who Deku is as a protagonist.

His goal is to become like All Might - the hero who was the ultimate Deus ex Machina of the universe, so powerful that he inadvertedly created a terrrible system reliant on that incredible power of a single person. Deku is trying to follow in his footsteps.

So where lies Deku’s conflict or challenge or limitation?

He’s morally perfect - already surpassing All Might in character from the start (as evidenced by his positive influence on people All Might failed, including All Might himself). He has no conflict as regards his goal - he’s not a reluctant chosen one - his goal is aligned with the power and legacy he gets. His power is a stronger version of All Might’s. So logically, he should be able to do everything alone that All Might could.

So the limit doesn’t lie in Deku’s character, nor in the goal, nor in the power. So where is it?

Because of quirk singularity, OFA has become more difficult to handle than it was at All Might’s time, which in the beginning gives Deku all kinds of limitaitons and broken bones, that he could only solve by lowering his power-output. He had to nerf himself to be able to continue.

This is a good limitation, but unfortunately the story didn’t deliver so far on the consequences. While in the Muscular fight Deku permanently damages his arms, this damage didn’t really hold him back so far in a credible way. He wins against Overhaul with the biggest plot-device ever (Eri-backpack), and he manages to smash ShigarAFO endlessly without much visible harm.

Also, because of “plot”, OFA underwent an evolution where it opened up the actual quirks of the previous users to Deku. This was in my view a very bad development, that made Deku less interesting. Suddenly, he had all these extra powers for free (so far neither Black Whip, nor Float came with any drawback whatsoever) that means:

- he can do everything better than other characters, making their niche powers redundant and sucking the oxygen out of their arcs (how could a Sero, Froppy or Uraraka fight look cool now that Deku can do all that but better and on a grander scale)? He has the most power, the most speed, long range, short range, snare, flight - basically the best of everything.

- he has a convenient tool for everything that gets him out of every situation and makes it so that the consequences he suffered because of OFA-singularity to his body don’t apply anymore - he could use Black Whip as a brace and continue smashing with broken arms, and even when his body was broken, he could help Todoroki with his tongue (unlike before in the Forest, when Bakugou was kidnapped).

These upgrades don’t come from any personal development or growth, but all come from OFA’s evolution. Deku also doesn’t struggle much with the extra powers (masters Black Whip in a week and Float instantenously - with some pre-training).

Plus, in the latest chapters his quirklessness has been retconned into making him the perfect vessel, pretty much abandoning the physical consequences as a limit to OFA singularity. Whatever damage his body sustains is always repairable or can be overcome with new gizmos or using the extra quirks.

So did multi-quirk OFA ruin the OFA plot irrevocably?

I think it did a lot of damage to Deku as a character (no growth, no conflict, no clear story-reason why he should be his own hero relying on others rather than still wanting to be an upgraded All Might-god), and to the story overall, by trivializing and making useless other characters who we as audience were invested in. Seeing everyone becoming nothing but fodder sucks big time in my view.

But I think there could still be interesting things be done with OFA due to quirk singularity. As we’ve seen with Shigaraki and the nomu - multiple quirks come with a price to be paid not only physically, but also mentally.

So far Deku is not paying any price for it though. All the extra quirks have come without drawbacks. Danger Sense has the potential to start wearing Deku down mentally though - due to sensing the crisis situations but not being able to be everywhere at once and wearing himself out.

Another thing I’d like to see is the pain and self-sacrifice of all the previous users taking a toll, as well as finally having some of these randomly chosen people to be not perfect. I think having multiple personalities living in Deku’s head shouldn’t look like a peaceful royal tea party.

All these users gave up a lot to get Deku here, so I feel like there should be some pressure on him from inside to get the job done or at least some disagreement about Deku’s plan to make nice with Tomura instead of eliminating AFO (remember, it’s the last chance!). So I think maybe whatever chat he had with 2nd and 3rd provided some conflict between the wills of the previous users, resulting in conflicting wishes for Deku.

All these could lead towards a mental exhaustion or breakdown that could be an interesting moment for Deku as a protagonist and really give him the clarity that repeating history is useless, a solo saviour is not the right answer, but changing the system and empowering everyone else is.

Since the power-scaling of OFA is already off the charts, I think it would be good to make it hurt more. It should�� feel like a terrible mental and physical burden (something like Frodo with the One Ring) to mirror Tomura being suffocated by AFO, so when the two powers destroy each other (which I really hope is the endgame), it will feel cathartic - that giving up and destroying that great power liberates Deku and saves his life so he can continue as a great hero (but scaled back towards the other in-universe top powers) who kept his humanity and his chance of a normal life full of meaningful bonds.

I’m also wondering how the story will close the society-level quirk singularity plot. One option is that all quirks are somehow tied to AFO (it being the original source) so AFO’s destruction leads to the elimination or gradual decline of all quirks - which would be cohrerent with Deku being the “greatest” - he would hold the peak power at peak quirk level.

Or it may be left unresolved, leaving the door open for a sequel where the ultimate “evil” is quirk singularity doomsday itself.

“Toxicity” in the BNHA fandom

[i know I tagged ships, but that’s because the ships were mentioned. This post does NOT degrade any ships that were tagged.]

So, I was heavily inspired by a post I recently saw where someone was talking about the toxicity in fandoms (specifically bnha). I agreed with the first half of their post until they decided to bash ships and become that toxicity. Rather than arguing with them on their own post I wanted to make my own post in respect to that persons opinion.

My Hero Academia is known as the most recent “toxic anime fandom.” While, of course, it has its people, many take that opinion way too far.

Warning: manga spoilers!! (Specifically ch. 285)

Why do people think that the fandom is toxic?

Let’s start off at the obvious answer, people don’t like the shipping in the fandom.

Of course, shipping isn’t for everyone and that’s completely fine!! But you would be completely ignorant to ignore that fact that shipping is apart of every. single. fandom. Not only the My hero.

The only reason why the BNHA fandom has so much shipping is because of the amount of characters there are in the show. And the lack of development some have compared to others. Claiming that people are weird for shipping the “weird ships” (I.e. gay shipping) but think it’s completely fine to ship straight pairings is completely homophobic. Don’t deny that.

People can ship whatever the fuck they want. Shipping is apart of every fandom. Why is it different in the bnha?

Another thing that angers me is when I hear people say “people in the mha fandom ship deku x nomu or deku x all might!1!!1” like,, no?? Wtf?? I’m IN the fandom and I have NEVER seen anyone ship those. Stop taking a ship one person may ship and generalize it towards everyone in the fandom. Because I can guarantee you, the average reader/watcher does not ship those pairings listed. Stop. Generalizing.

Another reason that people believe that the fandom is toxic is because of the ship wars that are definetly there. Whether you prefer Kiribaku v Bakudeku. Or Izuocha v Togachako (both of which have some sort of canonical crush interest. Stop being ignorant towards Togas canonical crush on Ochako!!) there are ship wars that exist, as they do in ever fandom!!

The biggest problem within those ship wars is the ignorance on every single side. As a multishipper, there are definitely shipping sides of the fandom that I prefer over the other. But, you can’t deny the toxic shippers on every side. Stop being ignorant and look at how people view your favorite ship BECAUSE of how people ship it.

This next point kind of drifts off a little bit, but it’s still important to recognize the stigma behind “bkdk being abusive/toxic.” If that’s what you personally believe, that is completely fine. Everyone is valid to their own opinion. But DO NOT push that agenda onto everyone or anyone. Especially if they are a new watcher/reader. Especially if you have not read the manga. I do not know how much I have to emphasize that. If you have not read the manga, do not give your opinion on bkdk. You’re just spreading unnecessary toxic information. We know that, in the manga, the two are mending their bond, even going as far as bkg SACRAFICING himself for Deku. Do not deny canon just bc you prefer another ship.

To go along with the “bakudeku (or even Kacchako) is toxic/abusive” opinion that was just stated, do not say that if you’re only saying that to further validate your Bkg ship. If he’s abusive/toxic in one ship, why isn’t he in any other?? At the end of the day, for the most part, he treats everyone at UA the same. Stop denying that. Stop picking and choosing. If you’re gonna insinuate that he is toxic, then he is toxic with everyone. Stop. being. ignorant.

Shipping aside, remember that not everyone has to like your favorite character. Personally, my favorite is Deku. It is more than obvious that Deku is not everyone’s favorite. That’s completely fine though!! As much as it does suck to see so much Deku hate, as long as it has a valid reason from CANON, then I respect that opinion. But don’t be surprised if people debunk your opinion if it’s because of shipping or bc the reasoning is really dumb (I.e. “deku is a crybaby!1!1!.” etc)

Another thing people do is go onto other people’s shipping posts or character posts and say “that’s cute but___ is better.” Or that’s cute but I don’t ship it.” Huh??? No one asked?? Stop it. Either leave a comment ABOUT the post and the post only or just like it and keep going.

It’s important to talk about fake rumors that are created in the fandom and how people take them to heart. Most recently, there was the rumor that Horikoshi cried while creating ch. 298. While that is of course harmless, it’s still important that we stop spreading those types of rumors. Another very popular rumor is that “Horikoshi said that he’s gonna make ____ ship canon!1!” Horikoshi has never talked about any ship in any interview. This has been debunked many times. Stop spreading the false narrative.

One of the biggest things I wanna address is the people who harass Horikoshi, which is absolutely terrible and is something that needs to stop. This is HIS story, not yours. Stop with the petitions, stop with the harassment.

However, its so important to recognize that this happens in every fandom. This is not only a My Hero thing. In every single fandom, there are shippers. There are ship wars. There are people who don’t like your favorite character. There are (sadly) people who threaten the creator. Stop saying BNHA is the only one. Because compared to other fandoms (I.e. Voltron who sent cupcakes with glass to the team) we are relatively calm. The BNHA fandom isn’t as toxic as many people think, so stop being ignorant and spread the false narrative because the only people who say that it’s toxic are the people who 1) stepped foot into the fandom for .5 seconds 2) hate the show. If it’s not your thing, then just ignore. Honestly, those who hate on the fandom are more toxic than those who are in it.

If they wouldn’t give him a chance then the solution seemed simple, he’d give himself one. He’d force the world to see him, force them to recognize his hard work. He wasn’t missing a quirk, it was simply that everyone else had been given an advantage. He wasn’t broken, or useless, or incapable, and he’d prove it by outrunning all of them, he who was quirkless, he who had started in last.

As for momnight, there are also only a couple, and im also not caught up with these either. i have a little bit more of an excuse with these, as Indefinite by OwlF45 is really REALLY long, as well as intense. Worth the read though! I just gotta catch up! So much mindblowing stuff in that, and the Momnight is really sweet.

It comes with the package deal of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Midoriya gets another chance at life, but he must throw it away when that dreaded day comes. After all, a life for nineteen is more than a fair trade.

Or: the world will rise or fall, and it depends on one boy protecting Class 1-A to prevent the inevitable.

The other Momnight one I have is A Single Reason by TheDeepSeaWitch. Also really good, but really intense and I’ve had to take a break because I was getting a bit depressed, whoops. But I liked it!

Training begins the next day, and doesn’t stop for any reason. They wait for heroes, then for police, then for anyone to save them, but nobody comes.

It’s only a month before Izuku forgets their names. It’s a year before he forgets his own.

It’s only a chance meeting with an impassioned soul eight long, painful years later that saves them.

Perhaps you should actually listen to the news every once in a while, so you wouldn't end up in these kinds of situations. What kinds of situations? Glad you asked. Look at Izuku, for example. You would think Izuku would be at home after school, safe and sound from anyone attempting to, you know, kill him. But no, Izuku decided to roam around. Because of a bet. This is the kind of a situation you shouldn't end up in. Don't be Izuku.

Butterfly by aconstantstateofbladerunner, is rightfully popular! It has some horror/suspense themes though, so if thats not your style, try one of Blade’s other fics!! She’s a seriously good writer.

The first over-night trip off campus since the training camp was supposed to be a fun break from more intense work back home. But between a bleak introduction to chaos theory, a chilly reception from the locals, and the looming threat of a villain attack, Izuku has too much on his mind to properly enjoy the fresh air. But those worries are a light breeze compared to the hurricane that accompanies what he finds on the outskirts of town.

Or rather, what finds him.

Aizawa rescued Izuku from the league of villains and takes care of the child for now. Izuku has two quirks in this AU, one natural - Forced Quirk Activation - and one that AFO 'gifted' him with - Self-Heal. He has a pretty big handprint-scar on his face and started as a problem child, scared and wary of people. But Aizawa managed to help him slowly heal.

This AU is just some silly little thing I came up in my freetime and like to add to it as I go, so I don't have a plan at all. Mostly I write for fun so I hope you might enjoy this as well :D

Your analysis on shigaraki's worldview is 😍😍😍. Who's your fav bnha character btw, and what kind of manga are you into? (i mean as in genre, but my phrasing is terrible at times so idk how to put it all in the last sentence)

My favorite manga in the whole world are the manga that run in Weekly Shonen Jump. I read almost everything that runs in the magazine from week to week. I know that’s not technically a genre, but let’s not arguen semantics.

And now because no one asked for it, my opinion on all of the manga currently running through Jump that I read.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba usually manga in shonen jump slowly get worse over time as they try to stretch their stories out, but Kimetsu no Yaiba is a story that continues to develop on itself and improve the longer it runs.

The art is phenomenal and has a good balance of when to be silly and when to be drop dead gorgeous. It’s more of an ensemble piece tied together by a big brother trying to save his little sister, and because of that almost every character Tanjirou interacts with is fun and really immediately attention grabbing.

It’s also a pretty heavy story that deals with death, grief and loss and trying to find life beyond a world that has suffering like that. I’m actually planning to make some meta of it soon, especially with the interactions between Domi and Shinobu. My only real complaint is that it’s deep but not too deep. Usually the demons are always bad and the demon slayers are always good in the end, even if sympathy is expressed for some of the demons. Once again though it does so well in the technical aspects of telling the story it wants to tell.

My Hero Academia it’s pretty obvious that I like it. The biggest draws for me are the art style and the characters, specifically the villains. Also the idea of a reverse X men world where what are basically the mutants now outnumber normal people and dominate society is a fantastic idea for world building with a lot of options.

I’ve actually followed Horikoshi’s work for a long time. His two previous works, Oumagodoki Zoo and Barrage both ran in Shonen Jump for a short time before they were cancelled which I find really unfortanate because they both had a lot of potential as well.

I love both the hero kids and the villains, though sometimes I feel like the villains are more connected to the central conflict of the story than the heroes. It would be nice to see Deku evolve a more radical philosophy then just wanting to save people right in front of him, or protecting the status quo. The heroes should ideally act in response to the villains to create a better world and resolve a problem the villains brought up, but if say the League of Villains were wiped out now another League would be created later because the central problem of the story has not been dealt with.

Dr. Stone this is a series that almost got cancelled, but was saved by a main character switch. Senku is really likable and unique as a character, kind of a mad scientist archetype who turns out to be the good guy and the hero of the story.

He reminds me a lot of Yoichi from the writers previous work, Eyeshield 21. In that they’re both laughing mad eccentrics who seem like they have little scruples for how they use and treat other people, and yet are surrounded by friends and act as the leaders of their team. They also both have a tendency for strategy over brute strength and like to outwit their opponents.

The only thing I can say about Dr. Stone is that while the characters are a fun little group of oddballs, they rarely get any deeper than that. The most interesting thing is still figuring out the central mystery of the world and what happened to turn everybody to stone, which is why having Senku as a main character was a really smart move on the series part.

Yozakura Family This is a new series that I actually really like and hope beats canellation at the two week mark. It’s kind of your basic romantic comedy characters get married in the first chapter promise, but also there’s some really strong character writing with the older brother. He’s one of the few examples of the obsessive and overprotective brother type that was portrayed as actually abusive and damaging for seeing his younger sister that way.

The premise also reminds me a lot of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, just suddenly getting sucked into the underworld of spies and crimminals when you’re an unlucky loser with no social skills. If the character writing is as strong as it is for the brother I can definitely see a lot of improvement and staying power.

The Promised Neverland the smartest written series in Shonen Jump write now with the best ideas. The Promised Neverland is all about theme, theme, theme, theme, which is why someone like me who devours stories for their nutritious value and content loves it.

While there are only about three major characters with arcs that matter to the plot, Norman, Ray, and Emma they are some of the deepest characters in shonen jump currently and the complexity of their relationship and the way they all foil each other is superb.

It’s a story about children trying to escape a neverland where they can never grow up, and live in a world that never wanted them alive. Not only is it just about them though, it’s also about adults who are still inside the system and gave up at one point or another and decided to just live in the evil world rather than change it. It’s a deep story but it’s also undeniably shonen jump, the central theme is about not giving up even in a world that is determined to deny your existence.

Act Age If you’ve read Chihayafuru this manga has a lot in common with that, because both of them are about very singleminded girls with complex emotions that they themselves don’t understand, finding themselves completely enveloped in a niche hobby to the point of obsession.

Act-Age is a story that’s primarily about storytelling and the nature of stories themselves, with each arc focusing on an adaptation of either a movie made up for the sake of the story or a pre-written play ie, Journey to the West, Night on the Galactic Railroad. However, it’s also bout the nature of stories, as understood by the perspectie of an actor.

There are only a few major characters but they all get intensely developed in their arcs. My absolute favorite relationship is that of the main character, quiet on the surface but with deep emotions that she uses for her acting talent with her rival an actress that’s much more like a pop star or idol. Rather than having deep talent she instead uses her ability to read people to appeal to them. She is cheerful and lively on the surface, but empty inside. The way they envy each other and learn to grow from each other because each of them has what the other one desires.

Jujutsu Kaisen reminds me of really early bleach that was just Ichigo and his teenage friends fighting Hollows. This is one of the manga I definitely reccomend, because it’s one of the lesser known manga in jump currently. The art style has this scratchy look about it which really adds well to the horror aspect of the series. It’s a demon fighting anime with some of the best demon designs, more attention is put on making them look grotesque and scary then in series like KNY where the demons for the most part are pretty good looking still.

The main trio is very solid, a reckless idiot who swallowed a cursed finger in the first chapter and is continually dealing with the consequences of that, the shadowy, quiet type cool headed one who almost never talks about his past or his true feelings on the matter, and between them the cheerful girl whose a tad on the merciless side.

Not only are the characters good, but it’s one of the few series where the fights and lore are super interesting. Rather than dealing with demons directly Kimetsu no Yaiba style we deal with curses, which are generated from the human subconscious.

For exmaple one of the villains Mahito is the embodiment of the fear humans have for other humans, that is the anxieties of life, and the fear and suppressed feelings that go hand in hand with humanity. Because that he’s much like a child curse quickly learning and progressing with a human intelligence.

The fights, the powers of characters, they’re all used to further develop a really interesting world of curses and the people who live dealing with them that it feels like we’re only scratching the surface of right now and desperately makes you want to figure out the system they have in place for this entire world.

Yui Kamio Lets Loose - I find it to be a really sweet romantic comedy about a stuck up boy obsessed with appearances and what other people think of him falling in love with two sides of a girl, the uncontrollable Yui that beat him up and constantly gets into fights and trouble, and the perfect demure girl who can only ever be helpless and kind and needs to be protected. It has a feel of a lot of classic 80s high school romantic comedies. The only real problem is that it needs to acquire a plot fast, because it’s at risk for cancellation which makes it hard for me to get invested in a series that might end soon.

Double Taisei - One of those shonen manga that had a really interesting beginning chapter, but then failed to do anything with it. I think it would work well as a character piece between two personalities who act like brothers in the same body, but the characters aren’t strong enough quite yet to work that way. I do like the character design…

Tokyo Shinobi Squad - It looked like a ripoff at first but the main character is actually fairly different from Naruto, and the manga itself is uniquely its own thing. I just hope it learns to utilize it’s cyberpunk setting better, because ninjas fighting in a cyberpunk dystopia is a very tropey premise and the story needs to utilize those tropes in order to work. I do like the fact that the main character starts out pretty powerful so it’s not a typical shonen formula about a main character slowly learning to gain power, instead it’s him taking in and being responsible for a kid.

Manga I don’t read - One piece, Yuuna of the Haunted Hotsprings, Chainsawman, Samurai 8 the tale of Hachimaru, Beast Children, Miitama Security Busters.

omg these two are the absoLUTE homies. you asked at the wrong time though, because i am smacked as all hell and my eyes are about as wide as a piece of paper. ill try my best to form coherent thought lol.

for shinsou:

favorite thing about him: this is really fuckin hard because he’s honestly one of my favorite characters. if i HAVEEEEEEEE to pick than probably just his general spirit. he obviously has a can do attitude, with the way he thinks he can become a hero, but he isn’t so like in everyone’s face about it. just because he’s a positive(ish) person, he’s not an extrovert or anything remotely close to it. he’s allowed to be a chill dude. i just love his vibe.

least favorite thing about him: i don’t like his attitude towards other people. i’m not saying it isn’t justified because of the tiny glimpse we got of his being bullied. i’m also kind of an ass so i can’t talk. i just wish he wasn’t such a cold person. i think spending more time with new friends will help him thaw out his dead heart though.

favorite line: "Maybe I failed this time, but... I'm not giving up. I'll show them I've got what it takes to make the hero course, and I'll become a greater hero than all of you." (basic, i know.)

brOTP: i love him and midoriya. i just think its another great example of a friendship between two people of contrasting personalities. i also wanna see more interaction between him and ojiro and the bakusquad in general. i think their dynamics together are pretty funny.

OTP: OH BOY DO I LOVE SHINKAMI. now don’t get me wrong. i am a massive multishipper. i love me some good old monoshin, and i like kaminari with other pp as well. but fuck, there’s just something about shinkami that hits so DIFFERENT. i don’t know, i just love them a lot.

nOTP: i don’t really have a lot of nOTPs. obviously i hate the illegal shit (shinsou x aizawa?? what the fuck???), but there’s not that many shinsou ships to begin with. i guess just anyone i can’t really see him with - maybe todoroki.

random hc: this boy definitely has sleeping problems. coming from a bitch who literally has Birkin x Tanaka level eye bags, i can say those puppies are not for show.

unpopular opinion: this isn’t that unpopular, but i think he’s probably going to be in 1b, not 1a. while i would lOVE to see him more frequently, he is still high key irrelevant to the plot. his moment (or his first moment at least) is getting into the hero course period. maybe he’ll be more involved later, and i hope so, but i really just dont think he’s gonna be with the hell class :(

OTP: I’ve very (very(VEry) recently gotten into both SeroRoki and KamiSero. I also think the would low key look good with someone like kinoko komori, but that’s just for the looks. i think little short mushroom lady with lanky, string bean tape boy is cute.

nOTP: anyone that’s also got that lowkey vibe, or anyone who’s super over the top sweet and girly. i just don’t see him having the patience to either one make negotiations because nobody can decide, or two being able to deal with a crazy affectionate, pet-name calling, daily-date-having, always-on person.

random hc: he smokes weed. period. this is like one of my only hcs that i feel strongly about. i am a stoner, i know by brethren. there is ZERO way that fuckhead does not smoke pot.

pretty popular fic but omg do i love it. no quirks au. kirishima’s grandmother has a bad fall so he moves to a quiet seaside town to take care of her where he makes friends with ashido and kaminari and falls in love with the artist bakugo, who’s studying under the famous artist Yagi Toshiniri. i LOVE kiri’s grandmother in this. slowburn, pining, hurt/comfort, angst if you squint.

okay i’m not usually the biggest fan of fantasy aus but FUCK this is the exception, i’m so in love with this fic. beauty and the beast au, kirishima is the prince cursed by a witch that wanted to punish his father for his selfishness. bakugou is a kingdom-renowned monster hunter who hears about this apparently vicious beast. no quirks but still powers, both bakugo and kirishima need true love to break their curses. fairy mina, wizard kaminari, knights uraraka, midoriya and iida, dragon tetsutetsu, prince todoroki, monoma and kendou are in it too but i can’t remember what they are off the top of my head - guess you’ll have to read and find out!

a lovely fake dating turns real dating fic. no quirks au. bakugou is a chemistry student working on nitroglycerin based products that someone is trying to steal and weaponise. kirishima is assigned to be bakugou’s bodyguard and has to be by his side 24/7, including moving in. technically college au, platonic kacchako, a really good read

12) the fool’s rush by chonideno on AO3, 4/4 chapters, 40.7k words

same writer as number six on this list! i ADORE the vibes of this fic, it’s lovely. after UA, fresh on the scene pro heroes kirishima and bakugou get an apartment together and try and work around the unresolved feelings between them. slowburn, fluff, mutual pining, a LOT of hurt/comfort because i love it. mentions of blood/wounds and mentions of alcohol.

13) neon season by chonideno on AO3, 1/1 chapters, 26.3k words

another chonideno fic! the vibe of this fic is just gorgeous. kiribaku road trip fic. the boys share a car, food, hotel rooms, beds, and each other. mutual pining, denial of feelings, happy ending. there’s also implied sexual content but nothing major. this is probably the most angst-heavy of the list because of miscommunication and general dumbassery but it has a happy ending.

14) quote love unquote by newamsterdam on AO3, 28/28 chapters, 135.7k words

this is a LOONGG one so buckle yourself in. fake dating turned real dating trope again. celebrity au where bakugo (among other bnha characters) is a famous actor and kirishima is in a small rock band and has been a long time fan (as well as having an intense crush) of bakugo for years. when kirishima bumps into bakugou at a party, the press take pictures and rumours about the two of them spiral, kicking kirishima’s band into the spotlight and helping them reach new levels of fame - with one exception. bakugou’s manager sero hanta insists that they fake a relationship for the press, and we all know where that’s bound to lead.

15) This Song is Dumb (And So Am I) by notoraeous on AO3, 6/6 chapters, 50.1k words

lord okay i haven’t read this one in a while and it’s very late night let’s see what i can remember for the summary. kirishima and bakugo and kaminari move in together after graduation, kami moves out for his career. unrequited but not really unrequited love, kirishima almost gets married to a woman, UNBELIEVABLY jealous bakugou. this is actually fairly angst-heavy, but i promise there’s a happy ending. i only cried a few times, promise

Basically my favorite characters to write for as your best friend headcannons UwU

Characters: Connor Murphy(DEH), Evan Hansen(DEH), Jared Kleinman(DEH), Freddy Freeman(Shazam), Shouto Todoroki(bnha), Hitoshi Shinso, Kyoka Jiro(bnha), and Peter Parker(mcu) *in that order*

A/n & TW: yeah it’s a lot, I know. Everything’s platonic and yes there’s some cursing and a small refrence of drugs in Connors if you squint.

Connor Murphy

He is oh so very protective of you

He doesn’t have many friends so he wants to keep you at his side as much as possible

Since his brains all fucked and tells him things that aren’t true, if you’re not around him he gets sad and starts to tell himself you’re out with other friends and he’s not good enough

Even if in reality you went to the bathroom

He overthinks so much

Hes a pretty goofy person though so he tries his best to lighten the mood or make you laugh when you’re sad

And it usually works

When you guys hang out you usually go somewhere like a park or your house rather than to his house because he hates his family and doesn’t want you around them

He’s too anxious to say things like “I love you” but he means well and you know he does

He starts saving money and not buying as much weed and such so he can have money to spend on both of you when you go out and hang out

His hugs are by far the best

He’s just so comfortable and warm and smells so good

Expect lots of calls at like 2 in the morning

Mainly just because his mind gets stuck in a rut and makes him upset and uses you as his lifeline which you have no problem with

He obviously gets very angry very easily but around you he goes soft

It’s impossible for him to get mad at you

His brain won’t allow it to happen

He secretly loves if you lock your arm with his because it lets him flex that he’s got such a great best friend without having to say anything

Any problem you have is his problem

Someone breaks a project you worked on for a while? Their ass is dust. Something happens at home? You live with him for the next week even if he doesn’t want you around his family. Hotel? Tivago

Having him as your best friend also makes everyone scared to do anything but be nice to you because they know he won’t hesitate to annihilate them

Just in general having him around and you being around him makes him a lot happier

He’s only vulnerable in front of you and Miguel

But he’s a lot softer and nicer with you

Evan Hansen

He’s an anxious baby

If he’s your best friend, he’ll be so at ease because he knows you won’t judge him or hate him or anything

He still stutters around you and can get pretty nervous but that’s just how he is

Hang out usually are at his house or at a park

He tries to keep you away from Jared because Jared’s a cocky bitch but Jared just means well

Most of the time..

But if you are around Jared, he panics because he’s scared Jared might say something about him and make you not like him and want to be Jared’s friend rather than Evans

That never happens though and to help Evan not panic about that, if you’re ever around Jared you make sure Evans there too

Evan loves hugs so much

He never has to say anything but just in general gives off a vibe of ‘I want hug’

He secretly really likes just hanging out in his room and laying down with his head in your lap and talking and ranting while you mess with his hair

It’s just so comforting to him to know you’re always there to listen

He’s very quiet so it’s best to always have an ear open around him so you can hear him mumble something like if he’s uncomfortable

He just really needs a person who can show him he’s cared for and loved

Like Connor, he’s too anxious to say “I love you” but for Evan, it’s mainly because he doesn’t want it to come off weird or something

But you know he loves you

Heidi once thought you were dating and it made him and flustered, anxious trainwreck as he tried to explain you two weren’t. It would’ve been a lot worse if you were there

(If he were to get into a relationship it would most likely be with his best friend because that’s who he knows he can rely on the most)

Jared Kleinman

He’s a cocky bastard

Like I’ve said, he mostly means well

But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a snarky asshole

He’s got a few nicknames for you but if you want him to stop he’ll try his best to

He’s a show off

He loves you a lot so if you’re his best friend he’s gonna flex about you so hard

Everyone’s gonna know you’re best friends

Literally no one cares

But they know

Like Connor, your problems are his problems

He will attack(verbally) anyone who does anything even as small as taking a pencil from you and not giving it back

Hang out are usually at his house or the mall

He secretly really really loves cuddling

He’ll be really cocky about it if you want to but he won’t say no

He teases you a lot but that’s just his way of showing he loves you

He, just like the other two, doesn’t actually say he loves you but his reasoning is he’s never had to say it to anyone so he just feels weird about it

If he says something actually insulting he’ll apologize

Something you’ve got to keep in mind though, is that regardless of what he says, he means well

He really does. He wants you happy but he doesn’t want to be different around you than how he actually is

He’s actually very insecure so if you’re good at making people feel better about themselves, you’ll be his ray of sunshine

He doesn’t actually have all those friends he met camp and a hot model girlfriend like he tells people so he doesn’t actually have anyone to keep his moral up

You can see right through his lies

When he feels like balling up and sobbing he smiles and cracks jokes instead of cocky comments

There’s been multiple occasions where he’s needed to sob and just huddled up in a ball and hugged his knees and cried while you just held him

That’s all he needs is a friend who can have a sense of humor to make him laugh instead of make himself laugh and have someone to lean on and not get judged for crying

His hugs are also amazing

Not as good as Connors but they’re still amazing

No matter how close you are, he’s still gonna be a cocky bitch but he’s nicer around you

Freddy Freeman

This boy is the best best friend anyone could ask for

Because of his disability he can’t do much but he really tries to make you happy

You do what you can to make him happy too because he’s a little depressed and a has mild anxiety and gets shoved around and made fun of a lot

If you love superheroes, he’ll be super stoked because... he is literally the biggest superhero nerd

Hang outs are always at his house because 1, his family adores you, 2, you don’t want him going places when its not necessary because of his disability, and 3 being that his home is just so cozy and fun

Billy is also really close with you because you’re around him a lot since you’re always in his room since they share a room

*His whole family secretly ships you two and it really pisses Freddy off since you two are, at this point, strictly plantonic*

He doesn’t say “I love you” or hug you around his family because it would just be endless teasing

If Billy’s not home and everyone else is downstairs he’s totally different

He does those one armed hugs because his other hand is always occupied with his crutch

If he does tell you he loves you, he kind of mumbles it since he’s pretty awkward and also in fear his family is around

He’s always on his toes when you’re at his house because he doesn’t want to let something slip and get teased about it because it’s already happened once when you were getting picked up from his house and when he walked you to the front door he just bluntly said “See you at school, love you.”

The second he turned around everyone was just smirking at him and started teasing him

He’s an incredible person to comfort you if you’re sad

He just always knows what to say

If you are sad he knows all you need is to be comforted which usually comes with physical comfort as well

If you’re in his room and just sobbing Billy promises not to say anything because he’s just trying being a good friend

The only times his family won’t tease him about it is if you’re sad and clinging to him

He’s very supportive and just all around great to have around

His best friend would probably be someone soft spoken and sweet rather than obnoxious and witty just because he needs someone sweet and kind in his life besides his sisters

He’s a big softie and anyone can fight me on this

Shouto Todoroki

Todoroki will be the best friend that gets very jealous if you’re around someone else

He just thinks he’s not good enough so if you’re around someone else for a little, he gets anxious and starts worrying and gets all down in the dumps

Kinda like Connor does

His hugs? The best on this whole list

His hugs are always so warm and tight but not too tight

Also,,, a literal living ac and heater

He’s just the best

Being his best friend, expect lots and lots of hugs when you’re alone in his dorm

Sometimes he’ll have nightmares and text you and ask if he can come to your dorm for comfort

And he just walks over to your room and hugs you and tries to calm himself down

He secretly really really really loves nicknames from you

Whether it be strawberry or candy cane or something else

He loves it

He’ll definitely need a best friend who can stop him from getting into fights because (I headcanon) he doesn’t like wasting his time in stupid situations like fights for no reason

remember when he almost threw hands with the chief of the police in the hospital? or when he shit on his licensing exam results because he was too busy fighting Inasa?

He’ll definitely need someone to be his common sense when he gets sucked into something and his won’t function

Hang outs are usually in his dorm, half of the time are just studying

Hang outs also don’t include much conversation because... he isn’t one to talk since he’s like on of the quietest in 1A

If you’re struggling with grades or training or something else, he will 100% help you but he’ll back off if you tell him to

Just like Connor and Jared, your problems are his problems

If he even hears your name mentioned in a negative way he’s all over it and won’t even mention what happened to you so you don’t have to worry or think about it

Kind of like Connor and how he saves up money to spend on the both of you, Shouto just steals his dads money and spends it on you both instead

You’re sick and need medicine? He skiddadles to the store and buys you some medicine and then a bunch of your favorite snacks or ice cream or whatever you like. You have a bad day? He takes you out shopping and spends Enji’s money like there’s no tomorrow

He’s that best friend that literally spoils you whenever they can

He will never ever judge you for things you like or do or anything about you

He’ll be a little awkward during the first few months of your friend ship and even when you’re close enough to be considered best friends

That’s just how he is

He’ll be very open with you so expect him to sometimes show up at your door and once you let him in just fall on your bed face first and ask for permission to rant

He’ll just mumble something like “Do you mind if I rant?”

Yes, he asks for permission. He’s very polite

He needs hugs. He’ll need someone who can initiate hugs because he needs wants them

He’s going to be the hugest softie around you, but other than letting down some of his aloof persona, nothing’s that different besides he’s a bit more open and goofy

Hitoshi Shinso

He’s honestly honored to be your best friend

At first, he was a little confused when you started becoming friends. No one ever tried to befriend him so he was confused. Did you want something?

When he realized you just wanted to be his friend, to say he was happy would be an understatement

He’ll definitely need support because growing up he was always told “sounds criminal, Shinso.” “You’re cool as long as you don’t manipulate us into being your slaves.” “Imagine how much stuff you could get away with!” And etc. so he’ll need support for when he gets depressed and insecure and lets his thoughts get to him

Once your best friends, he’s like your body guard

He’s supppeerrrrrrr protective

He doesn’t mean to be, he just loves you a lot and wants to make sure you’re okay

If he hears you got hurt during training, he’ll personally make sure you’re alright and then take you out to get ice cream

He kind of babies you but he knows you can protect yourself

He just doesn’t want you to feel like you’re alone

He refuses to use his quirk on you

It just seems wrong to manipulate you, which it is

He let’s you and only you touch his hair

Be honored

Like Todoroki, it takes him a bit to open up but once he’s open to you, you know basically everything down to his shoe size (?)

He’s not much of a ranter because he feels like he’s annoying you if he talks about his problems

You have to reassure him that you could never find him annoying and even after that, he’ll maybe rant once every month or two

Unlike the other few on this list and the whole ‘your problems are his problems’ for Shinso it’s a ‘you don’t have problems. I kill them before they become one.’ Kind of thing

Stressing over grades? Not a problem he stays up all night with you and does whatever he can to make sure they go up. Over worked yourself during training and made you sore and exhausted and go unconscious? He’s already convinced his teacher to excuse him from class and carrying you bridal style to the your dorm from the nurse

He’s on it, regardless of what it is

I headcannon he has a black cat in his dorm and it’s named is shadow, fight me

His cat loves you a lot

Being best friends with Shinso probably comes with Aizawa just generally appreciating your human more than others because Shinso talks to Aizawa about you and how you’ve made him happier

So of course, Shinso’s Dad™ is stoked

For the sake of this, I’m saying you’re in 1A

Since Aizawa likes you and the impact you’ve put on your best friend, you’re the only student in 1A that gets to leave to Shinso’s dorm whenever you wish because you’re not friends with anyone out of your class besides him

Shinso is a gifts guy

He’s that friend that is always thinking of his best friend when he’s out somewhere so if he sees something you might like, he buys it for you

He doesn’t shower you with gifts like Todoroki because he’s not rich, not that he’s poor, he just can’t afford spending money like it’s nothing, let alone if it’s not even his

Expect lots of calls or random texts at like 3am because his insomnia is always keeping him up

He’s definitely too shy to really show that he cares about you

If he does it’s in a way where he doesn’t need to look you in the eye or look at you at all because he gets flustered easily

He really likes Disney so one of his favorite things to do is just watch Disney movies

He’s the bestest best friend anyone could have ^‿^

Kyoka Jiro

This girl loves her music

She knows what it’s like to have someone insult your music taste so she will fight anyone if they discriminate you or your taste

She’ll definitely tease you about small things but nothing you’re insecure about

She’ll teach you how play the drums or guitar or whatever you want that she has because if you play songs with her, she will be super happy

She might not want a friend too dramatic or a drama starter but if you are like that, she’ll try an ignore it

Hanging out will probably be either in her dorm, an arcade, or doing something like kareoke

She loves kareoke so if you’re willing to play music with her and sing, you’re the best

Lots of inside jokes

Once shes open with you, you’ll know almost all of her secrets and opinions on things

But it might take a while since she has trust issues

Third most protective on this list (right under Peter and Connor)

She will not take anyone’s bs, especially if it’s even remotely at you

Every time Mineta mentions your name, he’s dead

She doesn’t care if you can defend yourself, there shouldn’t even be the case of needing to defend yourself unless it’s in training or hero stuff

You’re her favorite person to train with

Just cause she’s too scared she’ll get judged for something with someone else unless it’s Kami or Yoamomo

She’s not very affectionate so at first she’ll freeze up if you hug her or something

She’s just not used to it but once she is, she’ll hug you back or something

She’s pretty casual about it because it’s not like it’s anything further than plantonic

She’s not the best person to go to for academic help so if you ask for it, she’ll just refer you to Yoamomo or Todoroki

If it’s physical help you need, such as quirk or training stuff, she’s totally up for it

You’re the only person who she feels safe to rant around so it’s best that you’re a good listener around her

Her parents adore you

You guys rarely argue which she’s really happy about because she hates arguments

If you’re into the same music as her, she’s ecstatic

She never fails to make you laugh, whether she means to or not

The poor baby has PTSD so you should do you’re best to not mention Tony around him

Sometimes he’ll just swing over to your apartment and give up on patrol and sneak through your window and sob and hug you

He just needs someone to hug and cry on

Your parents think your dating Spider-Man because they walked in on Spider-Man clinging to you and sobbing

You had to beg them not to tell anyone you know Spider-Man

Thankfully, he had his mask on, even if it was tear stained and sopping wet with tears seeping through it

Being his best friend, you should try your best not to worry about him out with bad guys, even if it’s super hard because he’s always face to face with death even if he’s just swinging around the city

What if he missed where he shot a web and slammed to the ground and got hurt?

Will definitely binge Star Wars with you

If you’re not into Star Wars, he’ll get into whatever you’re into so it’s not awkward when you hang out and just watch SW with Ned

He lets you try on his suit but only after he gets it cleaned because it always smells like sweat and tears and blood

Once it’s clean it smells like flowers and laundry detergent

He’s given you part control over EDITH so if something happens to him and you only have his glasses, you can protect yourself

When he needs to ditch class for something he either has you or Ned convince the teachers something, depending on which one of you is in a class with him at the time because every class he has is with one of you

He made you a braclet made of nanotech that can also go into the form of glasses, with an AI named Mila, but hasn’t given them to you and only plans to if he absolutely has to

He had Pepper make them since he knows nothing about Nanotech. He had it customized with ways to keep you calm in chaotic situations and can find the easiest and safest escape routes for you in a few seconds

I forgot to mention he’s very protective because he refuses to lose someone close to him again

He’s an awkward mess so please don’t make fun of him or tease him about something because he’s really insecure

Once his identity got out, you stayed at his side so if he were bombarded with with questions or the press or anything else you could help him answer because he gets super nervous and stiff around the press and such

He really appreciates you

He tries to save up some money to buy you gifts for your birthday and such but you always insist he doesn’t have to

The boys a bit stubborn though so he’ll still most likely do so

If something happens at home you’re more than welcome to stay at his apartment

May loves you so you’re always welcome there

He’s not to physical but he’ll hug you every once in a while and such but not much more

If you’re ever sad he’s one of the best people to be comforted by

Mainly because he’s dealt with a lot and never had many people or anyone to comfort him when he needed it so he always gets into the mindset of ‘when I’m sad, what do I need from someone else’ and knows what you need and what he needs to do

additional important information for the quirkless kids club (can’t think of a better name) au

Happens probably uhhhh after the Cultural Festival arc bc thats always a good time for aus

Melissa is visiting from I-Island, getting away from her dad’s current court case while visiting her uncle Might which is why she’s here

While the kids are out on the town with All Might as a chaperone, some guy runs in with his quirk acting up, and miraculously, it only hits All Might, Izuku, Melissa, and Yuuga

cue BABIES

(cue also several panicked students calling Aizawa, crying and screaming, and Aizawa bracing himself for the worst time of his life)

Toshi, as he insists on being called, is 13-14 years old, Yuuga and Izuku are 4-5, Melissa is around 8

VERY early on the kids realize that everyone besides Bakugo fully believes that Toshinori, Izuku, and Yuuga have quirks. Wisely, they decide to not correct this fact. They’re kids, not stupid, and lying beats being bullied any day

Toshinori, in traditional pre teen fashion, is an asshole but only to the quirked older kids/adults. He’s an absolute angel to Izuku, Yuuga, Melissa, and Eri. He’s their big brother AND their father now. Anyone who wants to get to them has to get to HIM first. The only people he allows to get through is Nezu because he thinks Nezu is very cool and gives warm hugs, and Recovery Girl because he vaguely remembers Recovery Girl

An hour in and Toshinori has adopted Izuku as his young babiest prodigy. He holds exactly the same kind of feral energy protective that Toshinori himself holds. Toshinori likes that in a kid.

Toshi also plans on teaching both Izuku and Yuuga how to be the best quirkless vigilantes the world has ever seen and all the laws they can get away with breaking. And since most laws pertain to quirks, there are plenty of those laws

Melissa keeps wandering into the support department because its the one place where she feels the most comfortable, and people keep kicking her out because keep thinking she’ll fall apart like glass if she stays in there for too long. Naturally, the other three boys help her break into the support department. As a reward, and because she finds it fucking hilarious, Hatsume grants them flamethrowers. Yuuga’s is bedazzled

Hatsume also gifts Yuuga a (mostly harmless) bedazzled gun. Toshi shows him how to use it on people who make fun of him

Every time some weak quirked motherfucker tries to slide in saying shit about the “powerful quirk” they totally have, Toshinori bites them. Literally every time. Except for one time someone tries to insinuate that Toshinori’s spoiled because of his powerful quirk. Then it’s Izuku who does the biting

After it’s revealed that no really, they are all actually quirkless, those same motherfuckers try to slide in saying how they totally get how they must feel. Toshinori still tries to bite them

Hound Dog can smell the distress on the kids CONSTANTLY, even from Toshinori. he’s arranging them all therapy sessions for after they turn back to normal

nezu at this point has realized that yuuga got a quirk from afo and is quickly making plans to get place him under UA’s care while getting his parents to a safe location

Bakugo is torn between guilt and annoyance constantly. he knows that whatever god is out there is giving him karma for the bullshit he pulled in the past, but dealing with these little bastards is a nightmare. also how the fuck is yuuga quirklesss?? is this an afo thing? is this an afo bullshit thing??? did yuuga get a quirk from afo??? what the FUCK–

Ok so I was going to put this after my last vague “aizawa critical” post but then my computer fucked around and then I decided that actually I wanted this to be its own post.

So today we’re going to be looking at fics tagged under All Might (or All Might related tags) and Aizawa (or Aizawa related tags).

Let’s also assume that for every Additional Tag being listed here, 1% of what should belong in that tag isn’t – i.e., for every 100 fics tagged with an Additional Tag, there is 1 fic that should be included that wasn’t properly tagged, hence there are actually 101 fics with that additional tag. If there are numbers below 100, I’ll just add 1 to the count. If there are decimals I’ll round them up.

For simplicity’s sake, we’ll also attempt to account fo fics that overlap between tags by making the lower bound of the total count the highest number of fics in any given tag

At the very most, all of the negative Aizawa fics INCLUDING the bad teacher fics barely make up 11% of the fics under just the “Yagi Toshinori | All Might Bashing” tag alone. And that’s a generous estimate of Aizawa’s fics not counting the bashing fics that aren’t tagged.

To put it into perspective, there are 20 fics shown within one AO3 page. Ultimately this wouldn’t even matter if Aizawa was supposed to be the supportive good dad figure while All Might was supposed to have a minor, slightly antagonistic role. But the fact is, is that it’s the complete opposite in canon. Aizawa has a pretty minor role, his role only upping with the backstory of Kurogiri, while All Might was the third side character introduced and has remained a support for Midoriya (the main fucking character) since the very first volume to now.

Aizawa was originally very antagonistic towards Midoriya, hell he threatened to expel him on the first day and then plays it off as a joke. Meanwhile, All Might apologizes to Midoriya for underestimating him and looking down at him the first day they meet.

All Might is flawed, yes, but that’s how his character is written. Yes people acknowledge he is the best and Number 1 hero, but that doesn’t change the fact that multiple characters, including All Might himself, acknowledge that he’s flawed and makes terrible mistakes and then tries to do better.

Meanwhile Aizawa’s thinking and actions have been very flawed this entire story (I mean Bakugo should have been expelled at this point even before Kamino, along with Mineta and maybe Kaminari to give them ‘death’) and he’s never been proven wrong. Even All Might butters him up by calling him nice.

And again. I love Aizawa as a character. But fanon Aizawa and fanon All Might and how they’re written in fics are very different from their canon counterparts and I wish people would acknowledge it. Or at least acknowledge that All Might is bashed too much and Aizawa is praised too much as well

Actually the scene where All Might reveals that he’s quirkless to Izuku is probably the best representation of a) how much All Might knows about Izuku specifically, not as an extension of himself but as his (Izuku’s) own person, and b) All Might’s own personality and his way of thinking

All Might at this point has known Izuku for a little more than a year, and has known about his hero note taking skills since the day they first met. He knows that Izuku specifically specializes in quirk analysis. Izuku knows for a fact that OFA’s ability is not only stocking up power, but also the ability to amplify the abilities of any existing quirks that exist within the person. As someone with an interest in quirk usage as well as the next holder of the quirk, naturally Izuku would be curious about the effect it would have on himself, as well as how it would effect any quirk that All Might may have. Therefore he would ask All Might about it, therefore it would give All Might an opening to say straight up “I never had a quirk”. He simply underestimated Izuku’s ability to question him.

Another thing: All Might, while it doesn’t seem like it, is, in fact, a big doofus but most importantly, a big prankster. Like his mentor before him, and as Midoriya observes later on, All Might likes making pranks. But more importantly, All Might likes surprises. He gets excited about surprising class 1-A with an impromptu villain attack so they can show off to their parents. His first introduction to class 1-A professionally was abruptly BURSTING into the door during school. Most of him talking to people is him jumping out of nowhere and surprising them, even in his calm form he just...appears and surprises them. More recently he surprised class 1-A with some cotton candy while making a beautiful dad pun. Its only natural that he’d want his reveal as a quirkless man to be a surprise as well. He knows how much it would mean to Izuku to learn that he was also quirkless, and to make it a surprise by waiting for Izuku to ask him about his quirk, something he knows Izuku would do, would be even better.

However, when he does tell Izuku during the sports festival, Izuku’s at a very low point in his self esteem. He’s heavily doubting himself and expresses that to All Might. He’s already been doing poorly with the quirk, these past few months, and just explicitly stated that he feels unworthy of the quirk as a quirkless person, and he knows All Might could’ve given it to anyone, especially someone with a strong quirk who could do good with it. So instead of letting him stew in his self doubt for the sake of a cool surprise, he acknowledges Izuku’s feelings and says “hey, I was quirkless too”, assuring Izuku that despite him being ‘behind’, it isn’t impossible for him to get a handle on and use the quirk effectively. If All Might could become the number one hero with this quirk, Izuku could learn how to do it too, and assures him that he believes in Izuku. He lets go of the joy of the surprise for the sake of cheering Izuku up in that moment

Hi again! I managed 7 hours of sleep!

I don't know how many people I'm upsetting with these posts, but it is definitely an interesting topic, so thanks. And let me take a little more of a positive take this time.

I won't keep going on again about negatives, simply because there definitely are good things in the series and I don't want to make it seem like that's not the case.

To me, there are 3 general elements that are important to note in a series. 1) Worldbuilding, 2) character writing, 3) plotting.

Horikoshi is very good at plotting, but often lacks the other 2.

The setting of MHA is fun and interesting, but it definitely is pretty generic. There's nothing unique, flipping the script and making everyone have powers as opposed to the opposite is quite cool, but nothing other than that. However, I really don't mind that. Worldbuilding is the least important for me. After all, not every single series requires that. Slice of life and period and things like that are based in real life, so it doesn't really require it. Even with things that do there's nothing wrong with generic. It doesn't mean bad by any means.

As I've already made it clear I think, I'm a little less forgiving (I feel weird using that word, but I can't think of anything else), when it comes to character writing. I won't keep going on about that. But characters are the heart and soul of any story. So the lack of depth there really is a problem. The characters are lovable enough but many lack that.

As I said, the plotting is the best thing in the series. Not that there are no issues there, I think the transitions between arcs are very noticeable and don't always flow well. But I can definitely tell Horikoshi knows what he's doing, and excels at that. The fight scenes themselves and the ideas behind the story are very solid. Despite my issues, I do indeed have some good things to say about the franchise.

I really did not like most of season 3, personally, but most of that relates to my distaste to many characters involved. The actual storyline, especially when it's in its stride, is really great.

When the story is at its prime and when it hits its emotional core, it's when I can truly see the reason it reached the heights of popularity that it did.

The sports festival, I still maintain, is the perfect example of when the story was at its best. It was the only time I remember crying at the series, and one of the reasons why the story started to fall for me afterwards. The sports festival showed the strengths of the series, the complications with the system this world has set up regarding quirks and social standards, and demonstrated just how strong it can be. In that arc, the influence of Deku's character actually made sense too.

Mostly, I do still think the way he won over Shinsou was.... ridiculous. Especially because the rules clearly stated "if a person is incapacitated or unconscious the match is over", so logically, shouldn't the match have been called as soon as Shinsou got him under his control? There was a good 2 minutes where he was unable to fight. Why the hell didn't they call it at that moment? Considering they called it for other fights a lot sooner. But I mean that happens in battle Shounens a lot. I'll excuse it.

I think season 2 is exactly when the series showed just how good it could be.

The only problem though is that arc did a wonderful job of setting characterizations up, which makes it so much more noticeable when the characters often seem to be shoved around to force the plot to be good. It feels as if the story is dead set on an outcome for everything with no room for variation. Which means there's no attempt made to make any sensical decisions in regards to the characters who are supposed to be impacting the story, because as opposed to the characters impacting the plot, they often tend to be pushed around to fit in with that is required of the story.

Todoroki is probably the biggest issue in this regard. At the start, he had a clear personality, and after he started to grow, he still had a clear direction. The weird thing I notice is the characters are great so long as the focus isn't mainly on them. Once the plot started to revolve around the Todoroki family, Shouto's personality became a plot device. Pushing the redemption arc for Endeavour isn't innately a bad idea, it could be done well, but Shouto is almost being manipulated by the plot to act like however it requires him to, and not consistent with the way his personality and story was previously set up.

My hero academia is a good franchise. It really is and claiming otherwise is simply ignorant. It's very easy to trash something like MHA, but it doesn't deserve it.

However, it definitely does deserve thinking about it from a critical point. Because from a purely logical perspective, there are base issues that to deny would be doing a disservice to every series that works hard to avoid those issues.
