watched a video about rwby having a cast bloat, not too many characters but not expanding on the ones they already have and instead introducing new ones to take the place of those old characters. thoughts on this idea?

the core cast in volume one/two is ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaune, nora, pyrrha, ren, torchwick, and cinder, with ozpin, ironwood, and qrow being key players in the background.

the core cast in volume four is ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaune, nora, ren, sun, salem, and cinder, with oscar, ironwood, and qrow being key players in the background.

the core cast in volume eight is ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaune, nora, ren, oscar, qrow, penny, winter, ironwood, salem, and cinder.

the core cast in volume nine is ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaune, and the curious cat.

in volume ten, the core cast will most likely be ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaune, nora, ren, oscar, qrow, winter, emerald, theodore, salem, and cinder, with the summer mystery simmering conspicuously in the background.

the narrative has so far spanned four countries, multiple continents, and a primordial otherworld, across nine volumes. the core cast has not significantly expanded in that time and has also not changed very much, barring a handful of major character deaths, new arc villains introduced after the villains of previous arcs were defeated, and promotion-to-main-status of a few characters who began as supporting players who were doing Main Plot things in the background of what amounts to the story’s prologue.

rwby does not suffer from cast bloat. rwby suffers from having a contingent of the fandom that cannot wrap its head around the concept of a “supporting cast” and is consequently so hung up on a bit character who appeared once in volume three that people were seriously speculating that Random Named Extra #27 was going to suddenly be super important in volume 9.

anyone who tells you that introducing new side character locals when the core cast follows the plot to a new location is “cast bloat” or “bad writing” is 1. off their rocker and 2. not acting in good faith.

for having the scope that it does—a globe-spanning cosmic cold war millions of years in the making—rwby has kept a remarkably tight cast. my for want of a nail au fic’s core cast is triple the size of rwby’s and i have hundreds of supporting players. like. lmao

#rwby’s core cast IS of a large enough size #to be a pain for the writers to juggle #like that just comes with the territory of writing an ensemble cast #but people who take the writing team’s acknowledgment of that reality #and spin it into ‘cast bloat’ are grifters lmao

Neat accidental AU things

So I was straightening out and revising some of my content and I kept noticing little things I didn’t intend but are cool to think about.

Weiss and Nora are constantly hanging out and are consistently the envy of every mother at a PTA meeting in the TSF AU

Jaune and Weiss know how to drive a Yacht

Any child of Yang has the biggest branching family tree aside from the Arcs

TSF Yang has put down the most villains.

In Lasting Embers, Qrow had a kid years before the whole of team RWBY worked out their drama. Potentially even before Ruby got married.

Ruby only has Dustin’s eyes whenever she thinks of Cinder.

Premonition is the only AU where the friends eventually graduated.

TSF as a casualty rate of exactly one hero character and that’s Pyrrha

Ruby takes Whitley grimm hunting so he can have cool summons.

Carmine’s dual hair color looks like a ripening strawberry. Guess you can call her a strawberry blonde

Adam has been at Yang’s home more than she has and that’s a crazy thing to think about.

L.E AU would all things considered have the strongest team RWBY, but also has the most casualties.

Aside from Rosebud, Ruby and Weiss are always the last to get married

Neo is Lasting Embers has somehow made it into both main friend groups by not just being talented at her job, but also having an “interesting” relationship with a member. Adam for the bad guys, and Weiss for the good guys.

This one isn’t an accident, but I still think it’s pretty cool that Veronica didn’t utter one lie throughout any story.

Blake has the most consistent win rate in all my AU despite also being the weakest in all of them as well. Meanwhile Yang’s track record is the riskiest.

TSF Weiss and Ruby share a wedding anniversary.

Penny and Oscar have been married the longest out of all my couples in any story except Lancaster in Rosebud.

Unpopular RWBY Opinions

Some of these things are incorporated into my reimagined RWBY AU(not all of them) and my original stories

1. Arkos, BlackSun, Iceberg, and Renora should have survived and get a happy ending, I don’t give a damn about Pyrrha’s name or allusion.

2. RWBY didn’t have to be a super dark epic, it’s become pretentious. Maybe more akin to Star Wars or Justice League Unlimited

3. Adam should have just been an initial antagonist who doesn't commit super horrible things, the psycho abusive ex was melodramatic and dumb. Wether he joins the good guys or ends tragically is up to anybody.

4. Maybe we were better off without the Salem/Ozma conflict and have WTCH as individual arc villains with their own minions

5. I think Roman, Cinder, and their gang should have been just morally grey found family characters like Boba Fett, some kind of gang of thieves akin to those in Baccano or something and just help or hinder the cast like Team Rocket or something but not as silly. 

With Cinder and Roman becoming a couple and kinda like a "Gomez and Mortica" pair and Emerald and Merc hooking up, and Emerald and Neo would be like their daughters and Merc the son-in-law. I might recycle that idea for one of my original stories thats inspired by Skullgirls and Baccano who's protagonist sis something of an Anti-Cinder and an Anti-Torchwick with a ragtag gang fighting against a corrupt government run by a demonic-powered mafia.

6. Maybe RWBY could have been more like a Dragonball/Fairy Tail universe instead in terms of tone and narrative structure, and that wouldn’t have been a bad thing.

7. At the very least, Ozma and Salem could have been an explanation of the origin of the world and just something that would be rediscovered overtime and Ozpin and his circle are some keepers of ancient myth or something. Like The Jedi Order or The Time Lords or something idk.

8. Kinda feel Oscar wasn’t necessary, as much as I like him

Maybe the corrupt SDC and Bad Dad Jacques was also needless, maybe just one of the few good underdog companies in Atlas and Jack being initially a bit too hard on Weiss due to upholding the family’s honor and chivalry but means well and initial harsh nature involving his wife, a scientist who worked with Dr.Watts and Dr. Poldenia, being murdered at the hands of an anti-Faunus milita group and Watts having some role in it. Mostly because I'm just exhausted of the "Bad Dad" trope

10. Have Watts have a megacorporation and be the corrupt company in Atlas instead who’s responsible for their tech and uses unethical Faunus labor in his factories(even though in secret Watts just hates everybody) instead and have a bitter rivalry with Jacques and The SDC, especially due to Jack and Arthur’s personal history regarding Mrs.Schnee.

11. Hazel should have just been a Meta-Knight like character, a good guy but on nobody’s side with a grudge against Ozpin for understandable reasons, he has bear claw-like gauntlet weapons, and becomes a rival to Yang seeing his sister in her and is the “Papa Bear” to her “Goldilocks”

12. Bumbleby is a bad ship and it’s fandom are filled with bitter shrews who use it as representation despite how toxic it is.

13. Disagreeing with Monty’s vision isn’t inherently malicious.

14. I agree with @sytokun making Blake basically a Princess and have loving parents who are also influential was also dumb. Make her an Orphan with the WF/Team RWBY her found family instead. Or I would at least give her a “dead dad” with her Mom living in Menagerie but not as a “Chieftess” aka a QUEEN. They called themselves Cheiftan and Chieftess because it sounded cute.

AH HELL YEAH

- what made him snap? Jaune, actually.

- Qrow punching him, _wby going against him, being treated like he was some vessel for Ozpin already hurt him enough, but it happening again? He just grew tired of it.

- so he left. He got a new outfit, and he was even planning to just leave Argus. Ozpin was gone, qrwbyjnr hated him, and no one thinks Salem can be defeated anymore, so why stay?

- Unfortunately for him, he was found by jnr and practically dragged back to the Cotta-Arc house.

- Jaune tried apologizing to Oscar for what he did but the boy just looked him dead in the eye and said “yeah, sure. Whatever.”

- jaune and everyone else were stunned

- When Jaune introduced his “let’s steal a fucking airship” idea, Oscar told him that it was “the dumbest thing you’ve ever said and you have said many idiotic things.”

- it wasn’t in a playful tone either. It was cold and almost cruel.

- throughout the whole stealing an airship plan, Oscar was as negative as possible, more negative than Qrow actually.

- once they actually made it to Atlas, Oscar got even MORE negative when they got arrested by the Ace-Ops.

- When they all met Ironwood, Oscar realized quickly what he was trying to do. He didn’t care about Oscar, he cared about Ozpin. All this sparring and being nice was just a trick.

- Oscar got pissed.

- rwbyjnor decided to visit Mantle one day. Oscar wandered off. You wanna know who he found? Tyrian Callows and Arthur Watts.

- The two were watching the warehouse where Robyn would be celebrating with her followers if she were to win the election.

- Tyrian and Watts quickly recognized Oscar and pointed weapons at him. Oscar put on a smug-ass smirk and then made a deal with them.

- He hated Oz and rwbyjnr and so did Salem and her people, why not destroy them together?

- So, Oscar started disappearing more often. He’d train with Tyrian and help plan with Watts.

- When Oscar was at Atlas Academy, he’d spar with the others in his free time. He would get aggressive and way too competitive.

- Once all of rwbyjnor went out on election night, Oscar went with Jaune and Weiss to the movies, but that was just a cover for him so no one would be suspicious of him.

- Jaune and Weiss actually thought Oscar was warming up to them again too.

- At the Schnee Manor, Oscar noticed something. He noticed this waitress who was texting on her scroll, and she was hiding in corners and empty hallways to do it.

- he would have ignored it if he didn’t spot her taking pictures of qrwbyjnor as well.

- so when she sneaked off, he followed.

- Oscar followed this waitress and he ended up back at Atlas Academy. The girl had went into a seemingly empty random room.

- she then changed right before his eyes. Her hair changed, her clothes changed, her eyes changed. It was Neopolitan.

- He had heard about her from rwby. He got curious and pulled up a file about her. She was good, he’ll give her that. Her semblance and skills were incredible. She had never been caught or arrested, there were only pictures of her from shitty cameras. But he still recognized her.

- And to Oscar’s surprise, Cinder was there too.

- it was believed she was dead. Guess not.

- Halfway into Neo and Cinder’s conversation, Oscar interrupted.

- “Ahem,” he announced his presence. They twirled around, pulling out weapons and pointing them at him. “Hi to you too.”

- “You’re the farm boy, the next Oz,” grumbled Cinder, spite in her voice. The ends of her lips curved into a sinister grin.

- Oscar remarked, “Wow, you have eyes.” He placed a hand on his hips, and he gestured to her eyepatch with the other. He smiled and gave an eerie laugh. “Well, an eye, I suppose.”

- Cinder’s nose scrunched up at that. She growled and her grip on her sword tightened. “Why are you here?”

- “To help you.”

- “Help me?” Cinder repeated it, doubt painting her face. “Do you think I’m that stupid?”

- “Are you sure you want me to answer that?” Oscar smiled when anger and fury returned to her face. He chuckled, “No. I do want to help, it’s the truth. I’m alone, if that’s what you’re so worried about.”

- Neo and Cinder exchanged a look of uncertainty. The Fall Maiden nodded at Neo. Neo walked towards the door behind Oscar, keeping an eye on him the whole time. She then opened the door and peered into the hallway. Completely empty.

- Neo entered the room again. She shook her head at Cinder and remained behind Oscar. She held onto her umbrella, still ready to fight if anything went south.

- “So you want to help, kid?” Cinder inquired, lowering her sword and relaxing her shoulders a bit. “If you haven’t notice, you’re not exactly fighting material, even with the old man in your head.”

- Oscar ignored the mention of the wizard. “I don’t need to fight in order to be useful. Who do you think helped plan that massacre with—” he put on a mocking voice, waving his hands around a bit— “the Protector of Mantle?” He laughed between the words.

- “That was you? No way, you don’t have the technological skill or fighting skill to plan any of that.”

- “Well, I had some help. You may know them; Tyrian and Arthur?”

- Oscar watched the realization in Cinder’s face. She muttered, “Those idiots aren’t supposed to be here.”

- “Yeah, well, they are.” Oscar took a few steps forward, making Neo and Cinder get defensive again and point their weapons. He raised his hands up to show he meant no harm. “I don’t like team RWBY and their friends, and neither do you. So, do we have a deal?”

- He extended his hand out to the woman. She stared at him. She then asked, “What about Ozpin? What does he think of all this? Is he putting you up to this?”

- Oscar snarled. “That imbecile controls none of my actions. He sealed himself away in the back of my head, and he can stay there as long as he wants.”

- “So he’s not speaking to you?” the Maiden asked.

- “Nope,” Oscar simply confirmed.

- “Alright, kid. Tell me, what can you bring to the table?”

- Oscar grinned widely.

- And so they partnered up. Oscar tweaked a bit of Cinder’s plan and told her how freaking out James would probably be the best thing they could do. That’s why Cinder placed a glass version of the black queen chess piece in Ironwood’s office.

- Oscar told Neo to attack him and JNR and steal the relic, so it would look like Oscar had nothing to do with it.

- And the thing was; it worked out so well. Ironwood was panicking, and thanks to Watts, seeing Salem made him worse. Neo got the relic. Team RWBY and JNR and Qrow were all separated.

- Oscar then left JNR while they were being attacked by Atlesian guards. He went down to the vault.

- “And whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with?”

- “Still me,” Oscar snarled. Of course, James thought Ozpin was speaking. He was all he cared about whenever they interacted.

- James said, “It was smart not bringing the lamp down here. I wouldn’t trust me either.” He narrowed his eyes at the boy in front of him. “I assume it’s with your teammates?”

- Oscar chuckled, “No.”

- “No?” the General spoke the word. “What does that mean?”

- “Team RWBY and JNR shouldn’t be trusting me either.” He looked to the ground for a moment, a frown on his face. He then looked up, his mischievous smile returning.

- James’ eyes widened. “You’re working with her?”

- “No, I’m just helping out her people here and there,” Oscar responded. “I don’t think she knows.”

- “You realize this whole war started because she’s after Oz, don’t you? She will kill you.”

- “I’m not incompetent, James. I know that,” answered Oscar. He rolled his eyes a bit. “I want nothing to do with Oz or Salem. I never wanted this. And yet you people take it out on me and act like I’m just another Oz and that’s it. I’m sick of it.”

- “That’s what this is about?” Ironwood almost scoffed. “Look, I don’t know what happened to you after you all found out the truth about Ozpin, but helping Salem—”

- Oscar announced, loud and clear for the General, “Qrow punched me. Did he tell you that? Jaune pinned me against a wall. Yang, Blake, and Weiss yelled at me. Ruby did nothing to stop it. Then they just pretended it never happened. When we got here, they acted all nice and kind towards me. Didn’t apologize, they just thought a few nice deeds would undo what they did to me.”

- Ironwood stayed silent as Oscar spoke. He did look a bit shocked and concerned.

- “When Ruby lied to you, they didn’t care. Ozpin lied to us all and because I’m associated with him, I was their punching bag. I wasn’t even treated like I was my own person. All they saw was Oz.”

- After some more bickering, Ironwood backed Oscar into a corner.

- “Come on, you’re just a coward. Just like Leo, just like Oz, just like everyone else! Face it, James,” Oscar taunted.

- “James is what my friends call me. To you, it’s General.”

- Ozpin came back while Oscar was falling. With the help of Long Memory and some magic, Oscar landed in Mantle safely.

- “Now you return?” Oscar griped.

- “You were in danger.”

- “Yeah, I was also helping criminals and— oh. Oh.” Oscar laughed, anger hidden behind the chuckles. “You only came back now because it would take too long to return back here, right? You don’t care about me, you only care about yourself.”

- “Oscar, that’s not—”

- “Don’t. I don’t want to hear it.”

- and now here Oscar was, in the middle of nowhere with a voice in his head. Will he continue to aid in Salem’s plans, or will he get a redemption arc? Who knows

Sorry, this was long! I kinda got carried away and turned half of this into a fic. Evil Oscar is just so much fun to write!

Option on RWBY ships:

Btw, I don’t usually ship characters. Romance is usually the least interesting part of the story for me so expect a lot of meh.

Arkos: obviously I love this, it’s perfect

Blacksun: ehh, it’s cute. I started out feeling kinda meh, it was sweet but not really interesting, but now it’s growing on me. Ironically the same thing is happening with Bumblebee, although I still like Blake and Yang better platonically

Bunanas: so this is a ship between Velvet and Sun, and it’s honestly really cute to imagine even if it is completely random. I like it better then Blacksun…I think?

Candy Cane: this is just weird. I can’t imagine Nora being anything but a older sister to Oscar. The age gap makes it creepy too, not the four years is much of a gap, but when your teenagers it’s a big gap.

Chocolate Arc: this is hilarious to imagine but obviously yeah, Coco isn’t going to fall for someone like Jaune

Cinnabun: I barely know anything about Yatsuhashi but he and Velvet are cute, I guess? Still like her better with Sun

ClockRose: heck no!

Coconuts: again, can’t see Sun doing anything but annoying Coco. I really don’t like the whole ‘badass jerk of a girl falls for goof ball trope.’ It always ends up feeling sexist in several ways

Combat Boots: honestly outside of an AU I can’t see Yang ever forgiving Mercury much less falling in love with him. Also Mercury just doesn’t deserve her

Combat goggles: I feel like Yang and Neptune would have fun causally dating each other and slowly realizing they actually like (Blake/Sun/Jaune/whoever) and become each other’s wingmen. That fanfic better be lying around somewhere

Crimson Lotus: okay, if I didn’t love Renora and Rosegarden so much I’d probably ship this. It’s really cute

Crimson Sun: this feels like an excuse to write lemons of the two hottest characters

Crimson wings: look I understand most of the shipping heroes with villains because they’re both hot and the villain/hero dynamic is always fun. But Cardin…he’s not even hot. He’s not even interesting. And yet people ship him with Ruby? Why?

Daddie Issues: you know I see where this is coming from but they would just end up murdering each other.

Dairy Farm: obviously this is downright creepy in cannon, but in an au where Neo isn’t evil and both are closer in age, this would be adorable. I feel like Neo’s main problem is she’s incredibly lonely—other then Roman no one bothers to understand or talk to her. If Oscar reached out to her, and she began to protect him…it would be perfect. In way even better then Rosegarden because I think Neo would still be a bit of pycho even when good, and it would be fun to see her lose it when Salem hurts him.

Ilia/Adam: I just want to say I am forever grateful the show went out of its way to avoid this obnoxious, cliche ship from being canon

Dragon slayer: I see why people ship Jaune and Yang, I really do. They’re both the team mom/dad of their team, they’ve got the whole goofball/badass thing going (which is a trope I do like when the badass isn’t a jerk), they both have a good sense of humor, etc. But I just can’t see them as romantic. It feels really weird. I can’t even explain why. I understand shipping them but I really can’t ship them myself.

Emercury: I really love this ship, but I also don’t mind at all if the show decides to make them platonic. I enjoy their relationship in general and it works either way.

Oscar/Emerald: again, feel creepy. I love the idea of a sibling relationship and can’t see them possibly being romantic even without the age gape.

Cinder/Qrow: yeah again. Both are sexy and good for angsty lemons. I’m not into that stuff so I don’t ship them

Fall Stinger: I just don’t know why anyone would ship Tyrian with anyone. Unless it was Salem and even that is super creepy

Firerobber: I like villain relationships but Roman already has Neo and Cinder is a hot mess. Literally

Firewall: I don’t know why anyone would ship Watts with anyone. He’s even worst less ship-able then Tyrian

Footloose: I don’t actually ship it but just imagine Mercury and Melanie bonding over weaponized feet.

Freckles: Yeah this is just painful. The two most adorable characters (Penny and Oscar), who go through the worst things imaginable. It’s endless fluff, angst, and whump, and I love cute romance and tragic romances, so this is definitely something I ship.

Frostbite: seriously, this is so weird and toxic. Having Adam fall for Weiss or vice versa. Maybe it would work in an AU or something but it’s just too creepy

Funky Beats: it’s cute, I ship it.

Gelato: yeah I love healthy villainous relationships! Neo and Roman are freaking adorable, and I’m sad that we didn’t see more of them together.

Grandmasters: I obviously don’t ship Salem and Ozpin because that’s just creepy, but I do like their romance. I like tragic romances, and this probably the most tragic one in existence

Greek Lotus: I don’t see the chemistry and crashes two of my favorite ships so…

Green Knight: well, she kinda helped kill his last girlfriend so…unless it’s AU this isn’t going to work. Even if it is an AU. This feels like another ship made solely for lemons

Velvet/Cardin: yeah, a bigot changing his mind when he falls in love with a minority isn’t cute. Isn’t sweet. It isn’t romantic. I don’t even excuse lemons that use this trope. Even porn ought to be above that

Weiss/Cardin: WOULD EVERYONE STOP SHIPPING CARDIN WITH PEOPLE

Hummingbird: it’s hard to ship something when you only know one character, but I was interested in the theory that Qrow was actually Ruby’s father. But then in season 7 Qrow’s description of Summer made me rethink it, and it didn’t sound anything like how you’d describe a romantic relationship. So I don’t really like that theory anymore

Iceberg: this is just cliche and boring. I get them dating but it wouldn’t last that long

Flynt/Weiss: I really love this one, it’s my favorite ship with Weiss. I don’t want it to actually happened in cannon because that would be random, but I feel like it would be fun for both their characters. And they both share an interest in music. I’m imagining an AU where he gets her into jazz and she starts singing it at all her concerts to the horror of Jaques.

Iron Maiden: honestly what. Why. Gross

Iron witch: well I definitely see why people like it. I actually wouldn’t mind it being cannon, It’d be a good combination of funny/tragic and I’d like to see Glynda mentoring Winter

Jailbirds: this just feels forced and also Qrow is probably too old for her. I like their relationship and don’t want it to be romantic

Knight fall: lemon ship. Moving on

Knight Life: I feel like Jaune just gets shipped with everyone but this is cute I guess

Lancaster: it’s cute, but I can’t ship it because it feels cliche. I was worried that Jaune was going to be her love interest when they first met and was relieved to see him with Pyrrha instead. It just feels forced and boring to have him end up with Ruby

Pyrrha/Mercury: this really popular for some unfathomable reason. I like Mercury but Pyrrha deserves better

Marrowgold (May/Marrow): I just don’t see it

Nikong: Pyrrha and Sun would be cute together, but I don’t really love this ship. It’s kinda meh.

Nora’s Arc: no. Just no. It technically would work but their platonic relationship is way too good to lose

Old Silver: this is Maria/Pietro, and I think it’s adorable. They both strike me as really flirty for their ages and both are very good mentors. They can be the crazy grandparents of the team

Ozglyn: just don’t see it

Phoenix: yeah Raven was a horrible girlfriend/wife. I don’t ship her Taiyang

QuickSilver: Ruby deserves better than Mercury.

Rehab (Qrow/Glynda): the fact that this is called rehab explains why I don’t ship it

ReNora: yeah, this is probably my favorite ship. I don’t think I have to explain why.

Robotic Knight: I briefly shipped this but now disagree

Rosegarden: I really love Rosegarden, they’re just too adorable together, though the whole Ozpin does make it a little awkward

Rosewick: I can’t see this happening, even in an AU

Coco/Fox: I don’t know enough about Fox to really ship them, but the fact that Coco canonically slaps his butt during battle definitely makes me want to

Mercury/Neo: I could see this working. It would be pretty cute

Silent Knight: again, it would have to be an AU and even then I don’t see it working

Snowbird: so at first I really liked the idea of Qrow and Winter being ex’s, but now that I think about it he has to be at least twenty years older then her. Also, I have to say that while they have chemistry I think they would just end up killing each other

Speakeasy (Flynt/Coco): I got to say I like this ship and could see them having a lot of chemistry together

Strawbanna: I just can’t see Ruby and Sun together. It feels weird

Sunflakes: Can’t see it working

Sunflowyr (Ren/Yang): don’t see any chemistry. Again this just seems random

Tauradonna: this is obviously as toxic as you get.

The Hunt (Cardin/Blake): stop shipping Cardin with anyone!

Mercury/Cinder: Mercury is way too young, and even if he wasn’t this would be really weird. Also Cinder makes him look like a stable, peaceful person, so also no.

Toxic Petals: I swear I’m done with this. No more Cardin, Tyrian, or Watts ships. They too gross

Velveteen Knight: Aw, they’d be cute together

White Knight: I really hate this ship. It’s so obnoxious and boring, and nearly falls into the jerky badass/goofball trope I hate

Winter Soldier: ew, no, Ironwood is like her dad

Wise Dragon: anyone care to explain why this is so popular? Sage barely has any character to him, I can’t ship him with anyone

Yellow rose: Yeah, I kinda ship this, but again, it’s difficult when you barely know one character

IronQrow: I understand why you would ship this but I just don’t see it. Guys can hug without being gay you know

Nuts and Dolts: I would ship, but I like them together platonically too well. Definitely understand the ship, though I find it funny that Ruby, who insist she likes weapons better then people, would fall in love with a personified weapon. I know that’s probably racist against robots

Ozpin Week Day 7 (September 26th): Free day

*Bebe-dala-da! Baba-balalala-pop!* RWBY CHIBI!

In honor of the banner, have Chibi AU!Ozpin. Scarf not pictured, but he usually wears it when he goes outside. The mug was made by Oscar when the boy was 4, it's the man's favorite mug. Gags with HPTR AU Ozpin in RWBY Chibi include:

Being blatantly aware of all the plotting being done by the villains going on right beneath his nose and doing the bare minimum to thwart them

Occasionally doing badass shit that stupefies everyone before immediately acting like it wasn't that big of a deal

Someone's gushing over Ozpin because he's so cool and collected and badass only for one of his friends in the vicinity to start laughing because they know that Ozpin is just a weird, awkward teenager that cares too much about what others think of him who evolved into a weird, awkward adult that stopped caring about people's opinion. (Flashback optional)

Ozpin being a dotting father to Oscar. It can be a gag by moments, but it's mainly supposed to be sweet.

If I had the skill/energy/commitment, I would make a RWBY AU fanfiction where Oz’s Inner Circle just continued to have each others’ backs and not be horrible. You know, with some Ironqrow thrown in, obviously.

Qrow having sided with Oz during the Jinn/snowstorm scenes, definitely not punching Oscar, but still feeling unsure and angry, leading for him to blame himself for Oz retreating. In Atlas, Qrow tries to convince the kids to trust James right away, and starts working with James more closely and trying to take as much of his workload onto his shoulders as he can. Oz actually does talk to Oscar a bit more, but only to deliver a message here and there to James or Qrow, who are always being sympathetic and fatherly and trying to work to help him stop retreating. Meanwhile, Qrow and James both are like “Hmm, maybe there’s something between us” and things are starting to get more serious, but whoops, then the whole Salem attack starts happening. James doesn’t shoot Oz, instead listening to him, but insisting that he doesn’t have the resources to save Atlas and Mantle. Qrow of course doesn’t work with a serial killer to fight Clover, but Clover still winds up dead and Qrow still winds up in jail, and has to try and convince James that of course Qrow is on his side and of course he’s trustworthy. And James lets him in, lets him help, decides to try and trust him. Qrow tries to convince him that Ruby and the others are just making mistakes and James is very hesitant to agree, but says he’ll give them the benefit of the doubt one more time if they’re willing. Qrow and Oz come up with the plan to seize SDC resources themselves (legal or not) to try and evacuate everyone, and James actually trusts them, so he agrees. While they go to do that, James makes Watts turn the power back on and sends the Ace Ops to try and get Penny to come back to move Atlas - this time being convinced by Qrow and Oz to only move it far enough away to allow them to plan for the time being. Ruby and co still fight the Ace Ops (not accepting or believing the Ace Ops’ telling them that Ironwood won’t arrest them if they cooperate and come quietly,) but Qrow and Oz manage to connect with Team JRY while they’re evacuating the remaining Mantle citizens. They try to convince JRY to trust James again and they’re very hesitant, but when the message goes through and Ruby’s broadcast is all over, it draws way more Grimm and they table the discussion to focus on more important things. Oscar and Oz still get captured, and Qrow tells Jaune, Ren, and Yang to keep evacuating and goes to get them himself - and actually tells James about the situation. Meaning when James sends in the bomb, it’s an incredibly hard choice because he knows he has to for the sake of the literal world, but it’s Qrow and he loves him. He sends Qrow a warning, and Qrow knows he’s on a timeline, but he’s for sure still gonna punch Hazel for what he did to Oscar.

Idk, I just think it could be such a good fan fiction but I have so many unfinished fics and so little energy atm. I also don’t even know how I’d finish the fic, I’m really bad at endings, but it’d for sure be hopeful and I’d try very hard not to villainize the main cast and kids and make them still have shining moments and some good choices. Like, RWB would not sit around doing nothing in a mansion, and since I would be making James not literally evil, I would have a reconciliation, and I’d have James also get checked in his own more questionable actions. I just love the concept of the inner circle actually trusting and trying to take care of each other, and also I wish I could fit Glynda in and she’d sweep in and fix the wall in Mantle with a wave of her weapon, and probably berate Qrow and James both for doing stupid things, but also reassure them both. I just can’t justify her somehow making it to Mantle in like a day. XD She’d definitely not be on Ruby’s side when she sees her broadcast though, and she wouldn’t believe ‘General Ironwood can no longer be trusted’ for a moment.

How do RWBY and co react to Ozpin becoming well..like that cos like I'm sure they all looked up to him at some point but now their image of him just comes all crashing down?

Well, Adam and the white fang actually worked with oz to take over vale. Adam and oz struck a deal that once oz succeeded in his goal with adams help, that oz would give him power and land. Of course, oz didn't keep his promise, and while Adam was given menagerie, he stopped caring for Adam at all. Yes Adam is pissed about it and probably still dies (though he's given a chance to be a good villain instead of what happened in canon).

As for RWBY and co's reaction to ozpin- well, they're horrified, devastated and hurt. Oz never seemed like the type of man to take over an entire kingdom in a single night, and they feel even worse when they find out the gruesome shit he does (torture, experimenting on SEWs, abusing oscar, etc). They do feel a little bad when oscar tells them of oz's intense alcoholism. But they're mostly hurt and a little angry and very very tired of this ongoing, gruesome war (fun fact, the war in this au gets called smth along the lines of The Dark War)

RWBY x OMORI AU ::

So I have the art and the premise under the readmore. (art at bottom of readmore)

WARNING: Very blatant endgame spoilers for OMORI under the readmore. Seriously, if you have the slightest bit of interest in the game, do not look under the readmore. OMORI is dang amazing and definitely needs a playthrough without any preconceived notions before playing it. 

The protagonist of this AU is Ruby. And because it’s an OMORI crossover, this is definitely angst. 

Crossover Premise:

Instead of Pyrrha being selected, Ruby is instead matched against Penny in the Vytal Tournament with both eager to prove themselves. However, tragedy strikes as Emerald distracts Penny momentarily with an illusion - and Ruby’s scythe, backed by the force of a sniper shot, slips completely underneath Penny’s guard. 

The strike slices Penny into two - and leaves a scared, disbelieving Ruby behind. 

The attack on Beacon occurs immediately afterwards. Ruby’s insensate, unable to bring herself to fight. Beacon quickly falls to the combined attack of Atlas’s machine soldiers and the Grimm. And though Ironwood managing to eventually gain control of the ship controlling his robot soldiers, it ended up being far too late. 

The aftermath results in Vale being destroyed, followed by Patch. The rest of Ozpin’s circle (minus Ironwood) and the Xiao Longs retreat to Mistral along with a good portion of Vale citizens. Meanwhile, the sheer guilt of killing Penny and hearing others blame her for causing the worst of the invasion makes Ruby shut down entirely. 

She convinces herself that she’s dreaming - that this world is a nightmare -  and drags herself deeper and deeper into this thinking, resulting in her attempts to repress what she’s done and creating both Headspace and White Space as a result. 

In the real world, she no longer goes out of her room, barely responds to stimuli, and only stays awake long enough to sustain her body before going back to sleep - and into White Space.  

Ruby’s White Space avatar is Red and is the one she merges with when entering White Space. Red wields one of the blades of Floating Array. (Crescent Rose is conspicuously absent.)  The Headspace world she created is a Vale where nothing went wrong.

Her mother is still alive, always making sure her kids and her friends were well fed before leaving home. Dad’s still teaching in Signal while Qrow’s a teacher at Beacon. Penny has always been a Beacon student, and she’s been close friends with her since forever. Torchwick and company are a bunch of Saturday-morning Villains. And in that world, her team and Penny would go fight the Grimm and arrest / beat up criminals while visiting exotic places like Forever Fall or Mountain Glenn.

However, the memories Red is repressing constantly poke out through the cracks in Headspace, and often her imperfect repression results in headspace!Penny getting kidnapped and being dragged down into Black Space. Team RWBY constantly finds their way into the Black Space, where the repressed memories lie, by collecting the thirty-two chess pieces and assembling them at the Emerald Forest ruins. After saving her and getting a glimpse of the truth, Red redoubles her efforts to suppress the memories and resets the world to a slowly more perfect one.

Ruby eventually gains the strength to see what’s hidden in those repressed memories. Despite not perceiving them consciously, Ruby is still affected by the visits that the rest of her team do in between patrols of Mistral. (Yang’s particularly affected because Ruby is acting exactly like her dad when they lost Summer - and Ruby’s a stage worse than him now.)  And the effects of her teams’ visits manifest in their headspace versions of them. 

This eventually culminates in the showdown between Red, who has been repressing her memories and hiding the truth as a part of her function, and Ruby.

As for the outside world::

Team JNPR (as Pyrhha doesn’t get that extra push into suicidal martyrdom from killing Penny) pairs up with Oscar who now has Ozpin in his head. Their attempts to secure the Spring Maiden goes poorly, and Raven ends up with the Relic of Knowledge. 

As for Penny, Ironwood goes into complete lockdown and paranoia mode with no information leaving Atlas or Mantle. No one can enter or exit Solitas without his permission, and with the CCT down, there is no way to communicate to the outside world.
