I signed an open letter calling on SCBWI (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) to make a public statement condemning the violence in Gaza, especially the violence against children, and to do more to support Palestinian authors and illustrators. If you currently are, or have ever been, an SCBWI member, or if you are in any way connected to the children's picture book or young adult book world, you are welcome to sign it as well. You can find the full text of the letter and sign here. Below is a short excerpt:
Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators,
We feel your silence.
As a collective of children’s book creators, we are asking the preeminent global kidlit organization to speak out against the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza where “there is no safe place for children”—our precious readers. Current, past, and prospective members: please join us in appealing to SCBWI to stand in solidarity with Palestinian children and all the storytellers represented in our community.
Peach Creek Middle School Paranormal Research and Investigation Club Roster
Character art for a middle grade horror comic set in 90s New England I’m writing! I’ve been thinking a lot about doing a horror story for kids so this is where I’m going.
It’s about the Peach Creek Middle School Paranormal Investigation Club and their quest to uncover the secrets lying beneath their sleepy New England town. Inspired by Goosebumps, Gravity Falls, Spiderwick Chronicles, X-Files, Lovecraft/Weird Fiction/Cosmic Horror, Stephen King, and all things creepy. I’m kind of using tumblr as an online writing journal so it’s a work-in-progress. Right now I’ve got Club President Lou, VP Jean, and Treasurer Alejandro.
More to come: 2 more members of the club, their negligent faculty supervisor, freaky folks around town, and some terrifying cryptids and creatures our characters will encounter
Okay so this isn't the sort of thing I usually post on here, but I'm annoyed.
In order to be considered for the Spark Award, both author and illustrator must be members of SCBWI, and the illustrations are a part of the considerations for judging.
So why have the contributions of the illustrators effectively been erased? Never mind the actual perks of winning - illustrators Alison Mutton (Little Dune) and Rodrigo Cordeiro (Lena and the Dragon) aren't even so much as MENTIONED anywhere.
These are picture books. Surely in picture books the illustrations are equally as important given you can't have a picture book without the damn pictures.
So why the hell have Alison and Rodrigo not been given any credit whatsoever when their work is critical to the success of their respective books?
(This is not the fault of the authors, who are lovely people; nothing but love and congratulations for Lisa and Bethany, please.)
Ugh. Anyway.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
Also, be sure to check out Alison and Rodrigo’s websites, because they’re awesome.
Participated in #scbwidrawthis! May Prompt is bubbles. Featuring my OC’s Liam and Ava. Inspired by students chasing bubbles during recess time at the school I teach at.
