You can’t make someone love you. You can wait and wait, hoping they will fall for you. You can spend all of your time trying to impress them by romantic quotes. But in the end, you have no say over what they send back. You can search for clues by piecing together all of the half-smiles they’ve flashed at you, and the late night texts they’ve sent you, but you can’t magically make them have meaning. You can romanticize the conversations you’ve had. You can defend the times they’ve stood you up. You can defend the fact that you always have to make the plans or start the conversations. You can hope, you can pray, you can keep wishing that they will fall for you. You can tell them that you love them. You can offer them all that you have. You can show them how you will love them.

You can love them and love them and love them, but still, you can’t make them love you back.

That’s the hardest part about love…you can choose who to love, but you can’t choose who will love you. You can choose who to devote your heart to, but you can’t make someone devote their heart to you. And you can choose to keep waiting, and keep hoping that someday they will fall for you, that someday maybe they will be your knight in shining armor or the woman of your dream afterall. You can keep your fingers crossed and your heart on edge hoping that someday, maybe they will realize that they do love you after all.

Illumi Zoldyck and Selfish Love

I've been thinking about Illumi (what's new) and the love he embodies for those he cares deeply about isn't just manipulative, but also selfish. It is a selfish sort of love where the other must sacrifice for him. A lot. I'm mostly looking at Killua where Killua was forced to give up his freewill (via illumi's needles) in order to kill/how he was conditioned to be an assassin. He doesn't consider what killua truly wants, and dismisses killua's claims when is told otherwise during the hunter exam. Illumi doesn't prioritize it or think it significant. Believing that Killua is misguided and he knows how to point him in the right direction. Illumi knows what is good for his brother, and that is to be home with the family and to be an assassin. But really, he wants to control Killua-> control the heir-> control the family business as the head with Killua being the face. So this 'love' which strips killua of freedom will benefit Illumi in the long run. He definitely loves his family, for sure, but its this whole power dynamic where he needs to be the one in control/have the most control. (which leads into my other theory that he craves control because he was stripped of any control by his parents in his childhood. It's his way of gaining back control and feeling safe, so now he's power hungry.) He wants killua to love him, but the more he tries, the more it pushes killua away. But when he told Killua to have nanika kill him, he said he would gladly give up his life for the rest of the family to survive (and live in Killua's heart forever.) So sacrifice goes both ways for him, if need be, but he'll do it. He will COMMIT. For his family, he'll commit to the ultimate sacrifice, his life. Love to him is sacrifice, but the scales tend to be unbalanced and lean towards his favor most of the time.

One day, they'll look back and wonder how they missed all the signs. They'll be angry that you are gone, but won't want to take responsibility for always finding an excuse to not listen. They'll blame you for leaving despite knowing they failed to ask you to stay. They'll slowly, over time, begin to recognize all the moments you reached out only to be brushed aside. They'll make excuses, tell themselves you didn't try hard enough, that you made the decision, not them. But deep inside They'll know that they ignored every call, only text because they were too busy, just forgot to call back, didn't think it was that important.

Then, one day, they will forget you are gone and try to reach out. But then, when they realize you are no longer there, it will hit like a sledgehammer. It'll be at that moment that they see how you were always there when they were in need. How you always called just to see how they were or just to listen to them vent. How no matter what time, where you were or how long the conversation lasted... you were always there. Then when you needed someone to talk you off that ledge because life just got to be too much... they just turned away so they didn't have to witness you fall. That's the moment when they get to see what they lost in the silence.
