“i never thought the circles would take away MY rights!” cries the man who spent the better part of his memoirs gleefully backing the “let the circles take away everyone’s rights” party
[ID: A black and white, digital painting of the narrator from Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, sitting in a jail cell writing in a book.
A Square is a square with one large eye and eyebrow, and very thin arms.
First, he is looking up to the side with stars and a tear in his eye as he says, pen lifted above his journal:
"O, dear reader, happy friend of the Third Dimension!
I am haunted by the ingorance of my countrymen, to scoff so readily at new ideas, and to imprison, (for life!) those of us attuned to more revoluntionary thinking!
The brainwashing of the Circles is truly boundless, and I pity the inability of my contemporaries to question what they've been taught."
In the second panel, he has his eye closed calmly, as he writes,
"BTW, I hate women and disabled people so much it's unreal." With a heart at the end.
End ID.]
(thank you @rjalker for the ID!)

Tumblr media
You distinctly remember the moment when Ethan made that comment.
You were all sitting outside, discussing your theories as to who the Ghostface killer could be and who you guys should be watching out for. When Ethan realized he was part of the core friend group, and as a result, also a target, he looked panicked.
“Am I gonna die a virgin?”
It was an offhand comment that no one paid much attention to, it seemed like everyone pretty much expected that from him. But you didn’t. Sure, he was a total dork, and really bad at talking to girls, but he was a pretty boy. You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t considered hooking up with him before, but… That comment truly solidified the thought for you.
The two of you were sat on the couch of Chad and Ethan’s shared dorm. Despite Mindy telling you she didn’t trust him and that you shouldn’t be hanging out alone with him, you did very much need his tutoring. You’d rather get killed by Ghostface than have to retake econ.
But you couldn’t focus on the material. Not when Ethan’s virgin comment was making all kinds of images appear in your mind. You weren’t even listening to what he was saying, your brain having a field day with the thought of you taking that title away from him.
“Hey, Ethan.” You finally spoke up, looking away from your notes.
“Yeah?” He looked at you, the end of his pen held to his lips. He always had a habit of biting his pen when he got distracted.
“Are you really a virgin?”
The bluntness of your out of the blue question completely took him out of it. His eyes widened and he just sort of froze up, like his brain short circuited. You could tell he started blushing, and god did it look adorable.
“U-Uhm…” He put down his pen and tried to look anywhere but where your eyes were. Frankly, he was a bit embarrassed about it. He’d never even had a girlfriend, let alone have sex before, and as much as Chad tried to get him involved with girls he always struggled with it. Not just because of how awkward he generally was.
But because he had a crush on you already.
No one knew, not even his roommate, but lately he’d been struggling with keeping it to himself, especially as the two of you had been hanging out more on your own. There were so many moments where he just wanted to be closer to you, move all these papers aside and just kiss you right then and there.
His eyes were fixated on his laptop as he swallowed hard, clearly nervous about the whole ordeal. “Uhm… Yeah. I am…” He brought up a hand to scratch at the back of his neck, trying to keep his hands busy so his nerves wouldn’t show as much. “Just… Never got around to it.” He chuckled nervously.
You closed your laptop, realizing you’d made the poor boy uncomfortable with your sudden interest in his sex life. Or, well, lack there of. “Hey, it’s okay! It’s nothing to be ashamed about, there’s no, like, expiration date on when you have to fuck someone…” You tried to make him feel a bit better.
Ethan nodded awkwardly, genuinely wishing this couch would just swallow him whole so he could disappear. The girl he liked knew he was a virgin loser with no game, there was no way you were ever going to want him now.
The two of you sat in silence for a bit, Ethan wondering if it was too late to jump out a window and forget this ever happened. You, however, had a different turn of events in mind.
“Do you want me to help with that?”
Those words made Ethan look up from his laptop and his eyes widen. If your previous question was a pitch, this one was a home run. He wasn’t even completely sure if you actually asked that or if he imagined it, until he met your gaze. But he wanted to be sure his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him. “W-What?”
You shuffled a little closer, legs touching his, putting a hand on his thigh and leaning in slightly. “Do you want me to take your virginity?”
Ethan can feel blood rush to his cock from the question alone, his gaze darting from your lips back up to your eyes. If this was a dream, it was definitely the best one he’s had so far.
“Yes.”
Your lips meet his only a second after his reply, the book on his lap falling to the floor as you both lean in at the same time. You could tell he was nervous, but that didn’t stop him from trying. You tilted your head to the side and opened your mouth slightly to run your tongue across his bottom lip, an action that elicited a slight whimper from him.
His arms snaked around your waist and you raised yourself up onto his lap. A hand soon found its place in his curls, tugging gently to tilt his head back as your lips traveled down to his jaw, then to his neck, peppering gentle kisses and love bites on the way.
“S-Shit…” He spoke between hot breaths, one of his hands now resting on the soft flesh of your thigh, squeezing slightly whenever your teeth would bite down on his sensitive skin.
You giggle softly at how sensitive he was, lips sucking a darker mark on the spot below his ear. His hips were shifting beneath you, and even through multiple layers of clothing, you could tell he was getting harder by the second. You pulled back, hands coming up to cup his pretty face. He was already panting a bit, cheeks tinged pink from all this newfound excitement. “You look so pretty...” You press another soft kiss to his lips. “This okay?”
Ethan looks up at you with an almost desperate look in those doe eyes of his, nodding at your question. As much as you wanted to fuck him right then and there, Ethan deserved to be taken care of a little, especially since this was his first time experiencing most of this.
“Good, good...” Your thumb rubs gently across the soft skin of his cheek. “Wanna... Take this to the bedroom?”
“Please.” He breathes out against your lips.
The walk, or almost run to his bedroom, was a blur in your mind. You wasted no time, quickly getting inside and locking the door behind you both. Ethan was eager now that this was finally feeling real, hands swiftly finding your hips again and pulling you in for a passionate kiss.
“Hmm... Someone’s excited...” You mumbled in between kisses, stumbling backwards onto the bed until your back hit the mattress. Ethan held himself above you, brown curls perfectly framing his face as he admired how beautiful you looked on his bed.
He kissed you again, tongues playing with one another as his confidence was spurred on by his pure exhilaration. “Been... Wanting to do this forever...” He spoke against your lips as your hands searched for the hem of his shirt. “With you...” He pulled his shirt off in a hurry, diving back to meet your neck, pressing feverish kisses to your skin.
“Yeah?” You bit your lip, hand coming up to further push him into the crook where your shoulder and neck met. You let out a soft mewl when he bit down, wondering if he’d imagined this before. One of your hands moved over his chest, nails raking over the skin and undoubtedly leaving red lines in their wake. They travelled over his abs, down to his crotch, palming slightly, which earned a delicious groan from him.
You tilt your head to kiss the side of his head and get his attention to meet your gaze. His eyes find yours, half lidded, pupils blown out like he was high off the moment. “Me too.” You say, and you could swear it activated something in him when you did.
His hands start roaming under your shirt, and you take that as your cue to take yours off too. He stops for a moment, purely to admire the newly exposed parts of your body. Sure, he’d snuck glances at your chest when you wore tighter shirts, or when the collar would dip down just enough to give him a peek. But he only imagined touching your tits, how soft they were, how well you’d react to his hands.
His hand reached out and he gently cupped your breast, still a little careful. “So soft...” He mumbled to himself, his thumb slowly rolling over your nipple, almost teasingly so. You whined softly, arching your back a little into his touch. His other hand joined in and he squeezed them a bit, seemingly entranced by just how soft and pleasant they felt. Like they were made to be held by him.
He leaned down to your chest and looked up at you with puppy eyes. He could ask you to rob a bank with those eyes, and you’d do it. You just hoped he didn’t realize how you weak you were to that look.
“Can I?” He licked his lips.
“Y-Yeah, Ethan, anything...” You rubbed your thighs together. You knew he was just taking things slow, for both of your sakes, but god it felt like he was teasing you so badly.
He licked your nipple, a little hesitant, but he took the hand in his hair as a sign that he could continue. He wrapped his lips around the sensitive bud and suckled softly, closing his eyes as his fingers played around with your other nipple. You swore he was getting off on just sucking and touching your tits, noticing slight movements of his hips grinding into the bed.
He let go with an audible ‘pop’, earning a delicious whimper from you.
“E-Ethan...” You whined, catching your bottom lip under your teeth.
“Yeah...?” He hoped he wasn’t doing anything wrong.
“Touch me...” You spread your thighs a little more. “Please?”
“O-Oh, right... Sorry, I just... Got a little caught up in the moment.” He chuckled nervously and you did the same. You were glad there was still an air of lightness surrounding the whole ordeal. The last thing you’d want was for him to feel judged or uncomfortable.
He moved back a little between your thighs, hands exploring the soft skin of your legs with a pleased hum. He’d dreamt about moments like these so many times, ever since you became part of the friend group, he just couldn’t stop imagining what it was like. What you’d feel like, what you’d sound like... He was still processing a little that it was all actually happening.
His hand hesitatingly moved over your inner thigh, bringing a finger to gently trace over the fabric of your panties. His eyes widened a little at what he felt; you were soaked. He felt a little more confident in knowing he did that to you, but also a little shocked. “You’re... So wet...”
You brought up your hands to cover your face. You were, yes, but the way he was saying it made you all the more conscious about the effects he was having on your body. “Ethan... That’s-- You can’t...”
He grinned slightly at your reaction. He never knew you could get shy like this, you were usually such an open person. “Alright, let me just...” His fingers dipped under the waistband of your panties. He bit his lip when he discovered the hot wetness there, gently running over your slicked folds. “Is this okay?” he looked up at you.
“Mhm...” You nodded, your thighs twitching slightly when his finger grazed over your clit. “F-Fuck, yes... There, keep... Keep doing that.” You felt a little guilty for a second, remembering this was supposed to be about him. But you were doing him a favor, really, he was bound to have to find out how to touch a girl sooner or later.
His middle finger ran gentle and slow circles over your clit as his other hand kept busy running up and down your thigh. He stopped for a moment, hooking his finger around the elastic of your panties, looking at you for approval to take them off. You said something along the lines of “go ahead” between your whimpers, so he gently removed them from your body.
Again, he was taken aback by how beautiful you were, pussy glistening with juices. “God...” His thumb ran over your clit and you shivered slightly, having missed his touch, even if it was just for a few moments.
An idea sprung alive in his head, something he’d thought about many times before. “Hey, uhm... Can I...” He seemed nervous about proposing it.
“Hm? What is it Ethan?” You propped yourself up slightly onto your elbows, looking at him.
“Can I go down on you?” He paused for a moment, swallowing. “I, uh... I’ve always wanted to try that.”
You smiled at his request. Usually, the first thing guys would want is for a girl to go down on them, but you supposed Ethan wanted to explore all the options a little first. And maybe he wanted this to last longer than he would with your mouth on him. “Y-Yeah, sure...”
He smiled back, arms now on both sides of your thighs as he leaned his head down closer to your aching core. His hot breath hit your pussy, and you resisted the urge to just pull him closer. Instead, you ran your fingers over his scalp with an encouraging nudge. He stuck out his tongue, running it flat over the entirety of your wetness, humming at the taste.
You squirmed when he reached your clit, and his hands came up to settle on your thighs. He flicked his tongue and you moaned, almost obscenely, at the action. “F-Fuck!” He did it again, and your thighs started clamping down on him. “Jesus, Ethan...” He brought his lips down onto the needy bundle of nerves and suckled gently. Your head threw back as his tongue sent waves of warm tingles through your entire body.
“A-Are you sure this is your first time?” You spoke breathily through your moans and it only spurred him on further. He looked up at you with those all too familiar puppy eyes, tongue eagerly lapping at your juices. He moaned into your cunt, rutting into the bed slightly, fuck it felt good to please you.
You felt a familiar knot start to form in your stomach, hips moving against Ethan’s face as you mumbled his name over your whimpers. He sucked down on your clit again and that sent you over the edge, hand gripping his curls as you became undone beneath him. You rode it out on his face a bit before you relaxed back onto the mattress, thighs trembling in the aftermath of your orgasm. “Holy shit... Ethan...”
He slowly got up, using the back of his hand to wipe his mouth clean. “I hope I did alright.” He smiled, gently stroking your leg.
“Are you kidding me?” you spoke up after finally catching your breath. “You did so well baby.” You propped yourself up and he leaned down to kiss you, letting you taste your own juices on his tongue. Your hands went to his pants in the meantime, working on undoing his belt. “If you’d just… Help me out with those…” You smiled against his lips. “I could return the favor.”
He wasted no time in taking off his pants, kicking them off the bed until he was left in just his boxers. He kneeled on the mattress, his hard-on straining against the fabric of his underwear. You leaned forward onto your elbows, and he swore just the sight of you like that would have finished him off.
You leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his bulge through the fabric, and you noticed a twitch from his cock in return. “Been wanting to know what you taste like for months…” You mumbled, hooking your fingers over the waistband of his underwear to free his throbbing cock. The tip was already dripping with pre-cum, proof of just how worked up he got from eating you out earlier.
“Just relax, ‘kay?” You looked up at him and offered a sultry smile, to which he nodded. You reached out and with a gentle grip, pumped his length a few times. He bit his lip, suppressing a groan. God your hand felt so much better than his…
You leaned in and licked across the tip, collecting the bead of pre-cum on your tongue and savoring it. “Such a pretty cock too…” You licked up the length of him and he hissed through his teeth, hand landing gently on the back of your head. Not pushing, not pulling, just wanting to touch you.
He whined out your name when you suckled on the tip, looking down at you with desperate and needy eyes. “Fuck… T-That feels… So fucking good oh my god…” His hand moves over to your jaw, so you’re looking up at him now, and the eye contact doesn’t break, not even once.
His breathing picks up when you start to bob your head, but he stops you before you go deeper, pulling out of your mouth. “Shit, sorry, was that too far?” You look at him with a worried expression.
“No, no, not at all, it’s just… I wanna last longer.” He looked a bit embarrassed, and you felt a sense of pride of almost making him cum just from giving him head for a bit.
“That’s okay,” You got up to your knees and pressed a kiss to his lips. “I’m starting to get impatient anyways,” His breath hitched when you traced your fingers over his length again. “Need you inside me…”
You gave him a slight push so he sat down on the bed as you leaned over to grab a condom from the pocket of your discarded shorts. You rolled it over his cock, a snug fit, as expected, and your eyes went back to his face. He watched your pussy hover over his length, mentally preparing himself. If you going down on him felt that incredible, then this was about to be an out of body experience.
You put one hand on his chest to stabilize yourself, and reached one hand under to run his tip between your folds, lubing him up with your juices. “You ready?”
He nodded, hands coming up to gently rest on your hips. With that, you sank down onto his cock, slowly but steadily taking him inch by inch. Both of you moaned in unison at the joining of your bodies, neither of you imagining it would feel quite like this. You, surprised by the stretch he gave your cunt, him, surprised by your warmth and tightness.
“Fuck…” You sighed out, before you fully took his length, skin meeting skin with an audible clap. “So... Deep...” You put both of your hands on his chest, leaning forward a little. “Feels good, huh? You fit inside me so perfectly...”
“Shit...” He squeezes your hips harder, not enough to bruise, at least not yet. “So tight...” Ethan moves his hips up a little and you moan at the movement, the head of his cock grazing a very special spot inside you.
“F-Fuck, Ethan, hold on... J-Just...” You raised your hips, almost pulling him out completely.
“Let me...” You lowered again, ass meeting his hips. “Take care of you...” You started to establish a steady rhythm, Ethan watching your body move in complete fascination. You were gorgeous, tits bouncing, making the prettiest noises. Any guy would kill to have you on him like that, and he was no exception.
Your thighs started burning a little after a while, and he could tell as your movements got less intense. But you felt so good, every single change in motion sent jolts of pleasure through his body, his cock twitching whenever you would moan out his name.
He decided to keep chasing this high and take the reigns, putting a hand on your lower back and getting up, laying you down on the mattress as he pulled out.
“E-Ethan! What are you-- o-oh my god--” Your sentence got cut off by him sliding back inside you, his arms resting besides your body. You didn’t expect this more... Initiative-taking side of him, but it was welcome either way. You hooked your legs around his hips to pull him in closer, arms resting over his shoulders.
He quickly began thrusting, hips snapping forward, the room filled with the almost pornographic sounds coming from the two of you. He looked at you, curls sticking to his sweaty forehead, mouth slightly agape. You pulled him in by his shoulders to capture his lips, moaning into his mouth as he picked up the pace.
“Fuck... ‘M close... So close...” He spoke through heavy pants, head now buried into your neck.
“Me too baby, me too, holy shit don’t stop... D-Don’t stop!” You felt the hot coil in your stomach get to a breaking point, the bed rocking slightly with Ethan’s movements as you started repeating his name between your moans.
Ethan’s hips pushed into you one last time, cock twitching as he came, filling the condom nearly to its brim. He groaned your name into your neck, breath hot against your love bite covered skin.
You followed right after, legs clamping down on him, your pussy clenching onto his cock and milking every last drop out of him. Your thighs trembled as you panted, holding him close as he rode out his orgasm with a few last sloppy thrusts.
His body collapsed on top of you, the weight almost comforting, and you wrapped your arms around him, pressing a kiss to his head. He moved his head to kiss you lazily, and you chuckled at how adorable he was being. He pressed a few kisses to your lips, eyes fluttering open soon after.
“Thank you...” He smiled sleepily, still coming down from the amazing high he’d experienced just then. “That was... Amazing...”
“Could say the same to you...” You smiled back, basking in the sweet after sex euphoria while you could. You whined slightly when he finally pulled out, suddenly feeling a bit empty.
Ethan disposed of the condom while you went to his bathroom to pee really quick. He sat back down on the bed and looked at his phone, seeing multiple messages from his roommate.

Eddie Munson. Love. Established relationship
𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩
“I cannot believe them.” Steve huffed out, hands resting on his hips as his foot tapped against the asphalt outside of the police station.
“You already said that,” Jonathan blanched, leaning back against the hood of his car while Argyle closely examined his own hands for whatever reason.
“Well, I can’t!” He snapped again and Eddie smirked, thoroughly amused with the situation. And worried.
He was also very worried.
Half an hour ago, he’d been in the trailer, eating mac and cheese straight from the pot when the phone rang.
It was Hopper. Specifically, Chief Hopper. As in, on duty, Chief Hopper. Eddie had immediately jumped into a monologue about how he hadn’t done anything and even if he did, Hopper had no proof of it but Hopper wasn’t calling to tell Eddie he had six cop cars in route.
He was calling to tell Eddie to come pick up his girlfriend, who had gotten into a bar brawl.
He’d raced the fuck over and was surprised to see the other guys pull up as well, though he probably shouldn’t have given the fact you’d gone out with Robin, Nancy and Eden.
What the fuck kind of trouble could that roster have gotten into???
Enough to warrant being taken to the police station.
Hopper had informed him you’d all be getting warnings, leeway you all got most definitely just because he was now Jonathan’s stepdad.
“It can’t have been that bad,” Eddie rolled his eyes when Steve froze in his irritable mom-pose and slowly turned to face him.
“Can’t have been that bad—WE’RE AT THE POLICE STATION!”
“Would you rather it be a courtroom?” Eddie asked, cocking an eyebrow. He pitied Buckley for the scolding she’d no doubt get from Steve on their drive home.
“I’d rather not have to pick her up from anywhere other than her house or work!”
“Calm down, Mother Hen. It was probably nothing,”
It was definitely something.
The doors to the station opened, Nancy was the first out with Robin trailing her, you following Robin and Eden on your heels.
You all looked like you had definitely been involved in a fight, clothes rumpled and torn, hair a mess and Nancy sported a bloody lower lip. She started crying the moment she was in Jonathan’s arms, but he didn’t think it was because of her lip or even the fight, Nancy was just a very emotional drunk and her staggering was an obvious sign of intoxication.
You skipped right over to him and Eddie knew you were drunk, too.
“Hi, baby! I missed ya!” You sang as you slipped your arms around his waist to press yourself up against him for a hug, side of your face resting against his chest.
“You okay, sweetheart?” Eddie grabbed you by the shoulders, gently trying to pry you away from him so he could look you over for injuries but you refused to release your hold. The most he could do was get you to crane back a little so you could look at him.
“Neva’ betta’. Why?” You asked, cocking your head and beaming up at him.
Eddie’s face broke out into a grin.
“Because a little birdy told me you were in a scrap.”
You were about to reply before the sound of Steve and Robin arguing with each other distracted you and you turned your head to watch them.
Eddie had to physically turn it back, and he was laughing as he did.
“C’mon, buttercup, I need you to stay with me, yeah?”
He held your chin between his thumb and forefinger, dipping his head to the side to catch your stare and you went back to beaming at him, eyes crinkled.
“I’ll stay with you forever.”
Fuck, you were so cute.
“That’s not really what I meant, baby, but I had no plans on letting you go. What happened tonight?”
You scoffed, arms dropping to your sides as you took a couple of steps back and glared at nothing.
“You wouldn’t freakin’ believe it, babe! Me and my girls,” You gestured to Nancy who was being coddled by Jonathan, Robin who was now scolding Steve, and Eden who was high-fiving Argyle, “were out having fun, getting sloshed—I had so many midori sours, baby, so many and my throw up is gonna be green—when alluvasudden Carol fuckin’ Perkins and her group of raggedy bitches comes up to us.”
Eddie’s eyebrows shot up. He knew just how much you despised Carol. You two hadn’t been exactly friendly back in high school.
“And I’m like ‘oh wow, Carol, I was actually hoping to never fucking see you again.’ But she wasn’t there for me, babe. She was there ‘cause of Robin.” You leaned in to whisper the last sentence to him.
“I din’t even fuckin’ know it—but I should’ve ‘cause like the resemblance is there, isn’t it? Like they look kind of like each other, you know?”
“No, baby. I have no idea what you’re talking about.” But Eddie was thoroughly invested in the drama, shifting his position to lean up against the van.
“Oh, yeah!” You laughed, amused that you knew and he didn’t. “Carol is Vickie’s cousin.”
Eddie’s eyes widened comically, sending you into a fit of giggles.
Vickie was Robin’s ex….something. Towards the end of senior year, Vickie had broken up with her long time boyfriend. On the rebound, looking for some attention to prove she was still wanted as most do after a breakup, she’d entertained Robin’s infatuation with her.
They were always together, never affectionate in public, for obvious reasons, though Robin implied they were something. Then, it stopped. Vickie and her boyfriend got back together and she never even gave Robin proper closure, just stopped talking to her, stopped taking her phone calls and obviously avoided her.
It had been an unfortunate situation, the entire group pulled together to cheer Robin up but she got over it, met another girl, and they were an official couple. Girlfriend and girlfriend. She was away for a family thing and Robin couldn’t get the time off, which is why the girls had all gone out for a night to distract her.
“Carol is Vickie’s cousin!?” He whispered back in disbelief, hand flying over his mouth.
“Yeah!”
“So where does the fighting come in—is that blood?!” Eddie nearly had a heart attack as he noticed the red splatter on the front of your shirt. He hadn’t seen it earlier because you’d been glued to him.
You glanced down, taking the hem of your shirt in your hands to flare it out so you could see it better, “Oh, yeah! ‘S not mine, though. ‘S Carol’s. She told Robin people like her weren’t allowed in the bar, so I punched her a couple times and her friends started fighting us but we kicked their asses, baby!”
Eddie stared at you, eyes clouded with adoration and awe.
You’d been dating for a while now, and every single damn day Eddie thought he found another thing he loved about you. Every. Single. Day.
And right then, in that moment, Eddie was finally able to express what he’d been thinking, feeling for the last couple of months. It wasn’t really the things you did that he loved about you. Eddie just loved you.
He needed you to know.
“I am so in love with you,” He breathed out, hands reaching out to latch onto your waist and draw you back into him.
He was about to go on his spew about how you didn’t have to say it back and he just wanted you to know but you caught him by surprise, took the breath right out of him.
“I love you, too, Eds. Can we go home now? I’m hungry.”
Eddie blinked, knees weak.
“Baby, I don’t think you know what I’m sayi—“
“You said you love me and I love you, too. I’m drunk, baby, I can still hear you.” You sagged into him, head craned up to give him those eyes of yours.
“You love me?” He whispered, hand moving to tenderly cup the back of your head.
“Mhm.” You nodded, leaning up on your toes as Eddie met you halfway in a passionate kiss. He was about to tease your mouth open with his tongue when Hopper pushed his way out of the station.
“HEY! KNOCK IT OFF! GO HOME!”
Eddie laughed against your mouth as you pouted before he pulled away and ushered you into the van. Once you were buckled, he headed around to the driver’s side and took note of how meek Steve looked as he got into the driver’s seat of his own car. If Eddie didn’t know any better, he’d think it was Steve who got into trouble with the law, and Robin picking him up from the station.
Jonathan, Nancy, Argyle and Eden were long gone.
You were fiddling with the radio when he hopped in.
“It’s not working,” you frowned, continuing to press buttons.
“Sweetheart, the car’s not on.”
“Oh.”
Eddie loved you so much.

Captured by Marines
Characters: Luffy, Law, Ace cw: f! reader, angst, gore, mentions of injury/surgery A/N: A bit of a 180 from my post this morning haha! Also, I know I put it in the cw but again, this is obviously going to have some angst and there are also varying mentions of gore. I'm going to tag each individual story with major content warnings, hope that helps.
Luffy
A/N: spoilers for Marineford ahead in this one.
“Listen Luffy,” Nami begins hesitantly. “I need you to sit down, and remain calm when I tell you this.”
“What’s up, Nami?” He jokes, laughing at her tone. “You’re always so serious!” He hasn’t realized you were missing yet, or noticed the tears in Nami’s eyes.
“Luffy…” Nami takes a ragged breath to steady herself. “It’s Y/N. She-” Nami breaks off unable to finish the sentence, tears finally pouring out of her eyes.
Her tears surprise him, and Luffy’s head snaps around, suddenly very aware of his surroundings. You’re not here. You’re not at the rendezvous point. He does a crew count, everyone is here except you. He does the count again. One short. And Nami crying…
He grabs Nami’s shoulders firmly. “Where is she, Nami?” He begins to shake her, trying to get the words out faster. “Where is Y/N?!”
Nami is sobbing now, inconsolable. Luffy knows she’s trying to speak, but the words simply won’t come. “Nami, TELL ME! TELL ME WHERE SHE IS?” He can’t stop shaking her. He knows it’s not helping, but he needs her words to come out faster. He needs to know that you’re safe.
“Luffy, that’s enough.” Sanji takes a long drag off the cigarette between his lips, ready to step in at any moment. “Calm down. You shouldn’t be acting that way towards a lady.”
“THEN TELL ME WHERE SHE IS!” Luffy roars out to the room, but he releases his navigator. Nami backs away from him until her back hits a wall, and then sinks to the ground.
“I’m sorry,” she sobs into her hands again and again. “I’m so sorry, Luffy.”
“She got taken.” Sanji says in her place. He takes another inhale off the cigarette and removes it from his mouth. He makes brief eye contact with Zoro, both of them prepping for the worst reaction from their captain. “By the Marines.”
Luffy stands there, stunned for a moment. Surely he had misheard Sanji. There was a strange ringing in his ears, and his vision started to get dark around the edges. “By the…marines?”
Sanji sighs. “Yeah. She was protecting Nami, and they got her with the sea prism stone cuffs and made a quick escape. We tried to get her back, but they were quick. It almost felt like that was their mission the whole time.”
Sanji mouth kept moving, but Luffy couldn’t hear him. He could only hear your laugh, see your smile. And then he hears Ace, thanking him with his final breath. No, the outcome wouldn’t be the same. He was stronger now, and he would save you. He had to save you.
“We’re not letting them leave this island with her.” His voice is authoritative, even if his entire body is shaking with fear.
The entire crew responds in unison. “Obviously.”

Law
A/N: Injury and surgery mentions
“CAPTAINNN!!!” The Heart Pirates race towards their captain, eager to see him again. It had been too long. He smiles at his crew, but his eyes are scanning the crowd. He can’t locate the two people who are always first to greet him. “Where’s Bepo and Y/N-ya?” You and Bepo had been sent for a reconnaissance mission a few days ago and should’ve arrived back before Law. His unease grew as he watched his crew’s eyes shift nervously between each other.
Penguin finally clears his throat and speaks up for the crew. “Bepo is back at camp. He got inju-” Law is already on the move, not waiting for Penguin to finish his sentence. He refuses to run, but he’s walking as fast as he can without doing so.
Penguin is following close behind, not missing a beat. “Captain-” he starts again, trying to find the right words, but he’s cut off again by the surgeon.
“How critical are they?” He asks, tone clipped. He had used a lot of energy on the mission, but he’d do whatever he needed to in order to keep his crew alive. Especially you and Bepo.
“Bepo has blunt force trauma to his torso that will probably need to be examined and a deep wound in his leg and paw that will need to be checked out. He’s unconscious but stable.” Penguin responded. He had gotten used to reporting injuries to the Captain. “But, Captain-”
“And Y/N-ya?” Law felt better knowing Bepo was okay, assuming you probably had the same injury status.
Penguin said nothing for a long moment, which caused Law to glance his way. His mouth felt like sandpaper suddenly, and he realized that Penguin hadn’t actually report about you at all yet. “Penguin,” he prompted again. “What about Y/N?”
“She hasn’t reported in yet.” Penguin’s voice was pained. “We found Bepo unconscious about a half a kilometer from camp.”
Law hissed in disapproval, resisting the urge to Shambles closer to camp. He needed to save what little energy he had left. Penguin kept moving silently beside him, but Law could feel there was something his crew member wasn’t saying. He waited a few moments before he couldn’t stand the tension. “What aren’t you telling me, Penguin?”
“It’s not confirmed.” Penguin starts out, trying to keep it positive. “But Shachi heard something on the radio.”
“What? Spit it out.” Laws tone was dangerously close to being hostile.
“The Marines said..” Penguin stopped moving, taking a breath, as if to prepare himself.
Law didn’t raise his voice at his crew often, but with a member of his crew injured and another missing, he snapped. He turned on his heels and glared daggers at his subordinate. “Stop keeping me on edge and tell me already, dammit!”
“The Marines said they had someone in custody!” The words tumbled out of his mouth in a squeak, leaving a heavy weight in the air.
The captain paused for a moment to take in Penguin’s words, and then turned away, heading towards Bepo again without another word.
“Ca-Captain?” Penguin was back on his heels again, but Law said nothing. He couldn’t be distracted by a simple rumor. You were probably safe, hiding in the woods, waiting for a moment to come back to camp. Bepo would confirm that when he woke up.
Penguin tried again. “Captain, it’s just that-”
“You said it wasn’t confirmed right? She’s fine, then. Let’s worry with Bepo, and then we’ll send out a search party for her when we get a better idea of her last location.” The Captain’s confidence in you left Penguin stopped in his tracks, but Law kept moving forward towards his injured crew member, leaving Penguin in the dust.
Law waited by Bepo’s side after the surgery, within close earshot of Shachi and the radio. He had split the crew into small groups and sent them out to search for you in rotations, but nobody had found any sign of you so far.
Law couldn’t sleep while you were missing, but he knew he needed rest. He compromised by sitting and staring at the radio, as if he were trying to will it to speak to them. After a few hours of silence, radio static signaled that the channel was active. “Do we have confirmation on the identity of the individual in custody yet?” A husky voice broke the air.
“Standby.” A younger voice responded, maybe even younger than Law.
Law stood up for the first time since he had finished tending to Bepo. “Switch to-”
Shachi was already flipping to the secure line they had tapped earlier.
The husky voice returned as Shachi hit the channel switch. “-me you have a name, Lieutenant. I’ve got HQ on my ass about this matter.”
“Yessir. We have confirmation that the individual in question is [F/N] [L/N] of the Heart Pirates led by Trafalgar Law.”
The husky-voice man let out an audible gasp. “You better not be shitting me, Lieutenant. You’re positive?”
Shachi looked nervously at his Captain, but Law was fixated on the radio. It had to be a mistake. This couldn’t be happening.
“Yes sir.” The younger man confirmed. “We have multiple sources from the battlefield confirming her skill and her identity. We’re departing for Impel Down as we speak”.
Law’s breath was shallow. He needed to get to you. To pull you back to safety. “Room.” If he can just make an area wide enough, he can shambles himself to you and free you.
But the effects from the mission and the operation weigh heavy on him, and he can feel his ability fading before he can find your presence. He falls to the ground, the weight of failure finally pushing him over the edge into total exhaustion. He can feel the world spinning, and know he’s far surpassed his limit.
“Ready the ship to set sail immediately and do so immediately.” He can feel his eyes closing against his will, no matter how determined he is to stay awake. “We’re going after her. Follow them at any cost.”
As he slips from consciousness, he only thinks about you. How he’s lost you, and how he’ll stop at nothing to get you back.

Ace:
A/N: major gore/injuries
“To Whitebeard!” Mugs of various alcohols slammed together for a toast. Ace had Marco in a headlock, laughing and drinking his cup of ale while Marco struggled to get free.
“I’m just saying we should wait to celebrate!” Marco squirmed below him. “Jozu’s division still isn’t back-”
“Come on, Marco,” Ace jested. “You really have that little faith in division three? I’m telling Y/N. She’ll never forgive you, y’know.”
Marco finally freed himself from Ace’s grip and stood upright, looking out to sea. “It just…they should be back by now.”
As the hours passed and the party raged on, Ace found himself glancing at the horizon more and more frequently. By the time the sun was setting, his gaze was stuck on the path you should be returning back on.  “They should be back by now,” he muttered to himself. “Where are you?” Ace pulls out your vivre card, relieved to find it intact and inching towards the way you should be returning.
He held your vivre card all evening, watching for any signs of distress. Marco sat with him on lookout, waiting for any kind of news as well. It wasn’t until the moon hung high in the sky that lights appeared on the horizon. “They’re back!” Relief washed over him as he shook Marco awake. He tucked your vivre card away and stood up for the first time in hours. “I’m going to go meet them and see what’s going on.”
“Wait, Ace,” Marco started, still groggy with sleep. “It could be-” but Ace was already jumping off the boat, aiming for his Striker. Flames appeared far below where Marco was sitting, and the Striker’s engine roared as it took off towards the approaching ship.
Ace was used to you all being apart for missions. You were in the third division with Jozu, so it didn’t always line up that you all worked together. But Jozu was a man who was always has his crew back by rendezvous time, and it had been over twelve hours since that time had passed.
The ship was flying a Whiteboard flag, and he could pick out a few crew members he recognized when he looked through the binoculars. He let out a sigh of relief, finally releasing a burden he didn’t realize he was carrying. The pit that had grown in his stomach over the past half day had been so slow, he didn’t even notice it until it started to ease away.
The feeling of relief didn’t last long. As he got closer, he realized the ship itself was in bad shape. It had clearly been through an unexpected battle, maybe even more than one. He threw more flames out from his feet and raced towards the ship, the pit in his stomach returning and multiplying by the second.
He jumped aboard the boat, looking for your face in the crowd, but all he could see were beaten and battered crew mates in various states of conditions. Some had cuts, others were more bandages than human. The smell was worse. The stench of death and distant smell of blood was mixed with a strange smell of meat cooking. Ace’s vision blurred for a second seeing such a sight, and he willed himself to stay focused.
A deep voice called his name from the other side of the ship. Jozu. He looked around, searching for his fellow commander, but couldn’t locate him. “Down here, man.”
Ace had a pretty iron stomach, but the sight of his friend made it do a few somersaults. Jozu had a horrible head gash that someone was applying constant pressure on, a bandage wrapped around one eye, and the entire left part of his body seemed to be blackened, as if it were burnt.
“Jozu…” Ace resisted the urge to ask about your status, suddenly afraid of the answer. “What happened?”
“Navy ambush.” Jozu took a ragged breath, and those around him exchanged worried looks. “We didn’t stand a chance.” Jozu was gasping for air at this point, but he was determined to get the information out. “They took prisoners. About 10-15.” It was clear he wanted to relay more information, but his body convulsed with a sudden coughing fit.
“Who was taken? Where is-” Ace stopped himself right before he says your name, shameful of the fact that he’s prioritizing your life over everyone else.
His cheeks must’ve turned a shade of red, because a kid passing by glares at him. “If you’re going to vomit, do it over the side of the ship. We have enough to clean up.”
Jozu’s cough finally subsides, and he looks at his brother with deep regret in his eyes. Ace’s heart plummets, and he knows what to expect before the words are out of his mouth. “They took her, Ace. They took Y/N. I’m sorry. I-” whatever Jozu was going to say is cut off by another round of coughing fits, but Ace doesn’t need an explanation. He just needs you back.
Ace gingerly puts his hand on Jozu’s right shoulder, one of the few places the third division commander doesn’t seem to be injured. “Don’t you worry, Jozu. I’ll get them back.” Without another word, he jumps off the ship and onto his Striker.
“Hang on, Ace.” Marco’s voice of reason calls out to him from the deck of the ship, and Ace silently curses himself for waking him in the first place. “You need a plan. Don’t go charging into this headfirst. It’ll just get you killed.”
“I have a plan!” Ace fibbed. “I’ll be back in the morning with the prisoners.”
“Ace,” Marco starts. It was clear to him that the freckled boy wouldn’t listen to anyone who stood in his way.
“If they get them to Impel Down it’s over and you know it!” Ace’s panic was starting to show. Marco could see his eyes from the deck, wild and desperate like a cornered animal.
“Tch, you’re always such a hothead.” Marco chided. “Good luck. I’ll relay what happened to Pops, but be prepared for any consequences when you get back.”
Ace grinned and tipped his hat towards Marco. “Good luck here, Marco. Thanks for everything.” The Striker’s engine roared to life once again, and he pulled out your vivre card, ready to follow your compass to hell and back.

Like Betta Fish Do Part 28
wc: 3020, masterpost
“I get why you insisted on picking me up,” she said as she watched the black sedan part the sea of reporters outside of Wayne Manor. Her hand made a half aborted motion, like she wanted to fidget with with her hair despite the red being cropped close to her scalp in a pixie cut.
The haircut would be a new thing, or new enough that in stress old habits were still there. Perhaps something she did when moving into her doctorate. A new hair cut to go with a new stage of life. She went for an extreme though, maybe trying to shed a metaphorical weight or maybe a bob would have been too much like her mother’s hair. Maybe both.
Dick gave his head a little shake and tried to stuff the parts of himself that couldn’t help be analyze someone away.
It was worse with the stress of it all.
“I know, right? They’ve been crazy,” Dick said with a laugh.
“You don’t have to do that, you know.”
Dick blinked. “Do what?”
“Pretend everything is okay. You don’t have to do what with me. After all, we’re both big siblings, aren’t we?” Her own, wry smile didn’t reach her aquamarine eyes.
Dick wanted to protest and for a moment he almost did. Then Dick just sighed and let himself slump into his seat. “That obvious?”
“No, I just know what it’s like,” Jazz said.
“I shouldn’t be putting this on you though, not with what happened to Danny—”
She held up manicured hand. “Don’t. Suffering isn’t a competition. Besides, I got to learn this happened knowing that Danny was already safe and being taken care of. I didn’t have to think he was dead like you all did. I also didn’t have to learn about all the rest of it. It’s hard, isn’t it?”
“Knowing my little brother is still dead?” Dick gave a bitter bark of a laugh. “Yeah, it’s hard.”
“Half dead,” Jazz said with a smile that was all too understanding. “That half part is important to them. They’re half dead. They’re half alive. They aren’t the little brothers we had before and that’s hard. It’s okay for that to be hard.”
Dick rubbed at his face. “It shouldn’t change anything.”
“But it does.”
“It does.”
“That’s alright,” Jazz soothed. “It’s a big fact, of course it’s going to change things. As long as he’s still your little brother and you love him then the rest won’t matter so much, not with some time.”
The car came to a stop in the garage. Dick let himself take a deep breath as the door rolled closed. It was always about needing time, but at least they still had it.
“Well, Miss Nightingale, shall we go inside?”
“Thank you, Mister Grayson,” she said and took his offered hand to get out of the car. “And thank you again for the ride, Alfred. Picking me up from WE was the right move.”
“And you needn’t worry about your car, it will be safe in the parking garage,” Alfred assured her.
She covered an amused snort with her hand. “You saw my car, no one is going to try and steal that old thing.”
Alfred held the door to the house open. “Perhaps slightly more worried about the press hoping to find something.”
“Would they really break into my car?”
“They would,” Tim said from where he was standing inside the door, typing away on a tablet. “Gotham’s lost prince shows up at a gala with his mystery boyfriend and then proceeds to press the kill button for said boyfriend? The press is going insane for it. If it was just Gotham’s press it would be one thing, but it’s broken containment and fast. Have you said anything to any reporters? Even any non statements? Is there anything that the might dig up on you, other than your parents, that we need to know about?”
“Jazz, this is Tim. We’re sorry about him,” Dick said with a strained smile. It only got worse when he took in Tim and the heavy bags under Tim’s eyes. “Tim, when was the last time you slept?”
Tim waved the question away. “I had a power nap after breakfast.”
“What Master Timothy means is that he fell asleep at the table mid-meal,” Alfred chastised as he continue into the manor proper.
“Still counts,” Tim muttered. Finally he looked up from his tablet to blink listlessly at them. “Well?”
“Tim,” Dick chastised.
“No, it’s fine,” Jazz said with a patient smile of someone used to behavior like this. “It really is… everywhere. I haven’t said anything to any press other than ‘no statement’ and I can’t think of anything. Well, I mean, I have a girlfriend but if they have an issue with her they already have Danny and Jason to rage over. How is Danny handling it all?”
“Tim has blocked all social media from the manor. You need a password to get through it and I don’t think they’ve been bored enough to try and crack it yet,” Dick said.
Jazz looked thoughtful. “That’s probably best. I’m alright with you asking more questions, but can I see Danny first, please?”
Tim blinked as if startled by the thought. “Yes, right, of course. They’re probably still in the library, that’s where I saw them last.”
“That was yesterday,” Dick pointed out.
“Oh, well,” Tim tilted his head but didn’t stop talking. “I bet I’m still right.”
Dick just sighed and exchanged a look with Jazz. Little brothers.
-
Jazz crouched down in front of the couch and reached out to run her fingers through Danny’s hair.
“Danny.”
“Nn.”
The corner of her mouth ticked up. “Danny.”
“’ive m’er min, Jazz,” he mumbled sleepily.
“If you don’t get up, I’m calling Cujo.”
“I’m up, I’m up!” Danny explained and jolted awake before he was left just blinking confessedly at the room. When the rest of it snapped together for him he smiled brightly. “Jazz!”
“Danny!”
“Your hair looks even better in person!” Danny said, reaching out to ruffle the short locks.
“I don’t care if you’re on your deathbed Danny, I will bite you.”
Danny sighed dramatically as he sat up properly. “I never get to die on a bed. At least this time I was sitting.”
Jazz leaned forward and wrapped Danny up into a crushing looking hug. “Oh Danny, what am I going to do with you?”
“Still don’t have an answer for you there, Jazz,” Danny said. He was practically curled around Jazz and stayed that way as she shifted to sit with him on the couch.
She looked up at Jason who was still standing awkwardly by the couch where he had greeted her. “You can sit. I don’t bite.”
Jason snorted. “You just threatened to bite Danny. I don’t believe you.”
“Her bites aren’t bad,” Danny said with a yawn. “But her aim is horrible. And don’t let her have a baseball bat. She’s lethal with one of those.”
The almost fanged way that Jazz smile made that easy to believe.
“I approve of you, Nightingale,” Damian said with a decisive nod from the armchair he was occupying.
“What are you going to do now that there are two Nightingales?” Tim asked, far too innocently.
Damian scowled, his whole face scrunched up before he gave a sharp shrug. “I am confident that the Nightingales are intelligent enough to know which one I am referring to.”
Jason shook his head at the easy way the brat seemed to accept Jazz and settled on the far side of the couch from her, leaving Dick and Tim to take the two seater.
“You didn’t have to come all this way, Jazz,” Danny said, though his words were at odds with how thoroughly he had relaxed into her side.
Jazz rolled her eyes. “You were electrocute Danny, again. Of course I was going to come see you. Even if classes were in session, you’re more important than them.”
“Hum, fine,” Danny said with a huff of air. Somehow he settled in even further to his sister’s side. “Sam, Val, and Tucker send their love. With all the crazy press I told them to stay away so not to get caught up in this.”
“It is something for sure,” Jazz agreed. “How are you doing?”
“I’m tired and tired of being tired, it sucks. Oh, I’ve got more Lichtenberg scars!” Danny stuck his legs up in the air. His fuzzy, Nightwing patterned pants slid down his legs enough to show the scarring that wrapped around his ankles. The marks were still raised and red. Jason caught the legs as they dropped and settled them into his lap. He couldn’t help but run his thumb over the mark as soft reassurance that Danny was there and alive despite it all. “Not sure if these will stick around since they’re not ghostly.”
“You need to stop collecting them. No more getting electrocuted, big sister’s order.”
“Second that on boyfriend’s orders,” Jason said.
“Thirding that from the in-laws,” Dick said. In-laws? “Aw look at that, Jaybird is blushing.”
Jason pulled a throw pillow out from behind him and lobbed it at Dick. “Shut it.”
Dick easily caught the pillow with a laugh. “Jason and Danny, kissing in a tree—”
“Grayson, try to not be an embarrassment,” Damian said with a sigh.
“What? Jason and Danny could totally kiss in a tree. Danny can fly! I mean, not that we’ve seen it yet but he says he can,” Dick said.
“Oh he can. Nothing like walking into your little brother’s room to find him sitting on the ceiling,” Jazz said. “It was an interesting childhood.”
“It makes hanging things easy too,” Jason teased.
Danny sighed dramatically. “I knew you were just into me to be your glorified ladder.”
“That’s just because he wants to climb you,” Tim muttered absently.
Jason held up his hands for Dick to throw the pillow back to him and then lobbed it at Tim. It smacked Tim square in the face, making his little brother’s shoulders slump as it landed on his tablet.
“Really?”
“Don’t be crude,” Jason said.
Tim glared at Jason from under his bangs. The kid’s hair was getting long again. “Oh that’s rich coming from the Red Hood.”
“Red Hood?” Jazz’s voice cracked slightly.
Jason buried his face in his hands with a groan.
“Oh, shit, did she now know? I thought she knew!”
The whole couch shifted as Danny pulled himself up by Jason’s shirt so that he could cuddle him. “It’s okay, I love my hero.”
“Vigilante,” Jason mumbled.
“Daniel John Nightingale!” Jazz screeched. “Tell me you’re not doing vigilante stuff again!”
“Ooooooh full named!” Dick heckled.
“I am not doing vigilante stuff again,” Danny said.
“He’s really not,” Jason promised as he shifted Danny around to be more comfortable. “That’s just family business. I wouldn’t ask him to get involved.”
“Family…,” Jazz said. Jason watched her eyes dart from Danny to Jason to the rest of them. “Ancients you’re all, what would you call it? Various Batmen?”
“Usually we just go with Bats,” Tim said with a little shrug. “Especially since we’re not all, or only, men.”
“Okay, Bats,” Jazz said with a sigh. “Really, Danny?”
Danny shrugged, completely unrepentant by the way he smiled. “I didn’t know! I didn’t even know Jason was a Wayne until just before we started dating. That one is maybe on me though, I’m bad with faces.”
“You always have been,” Jazz said. “Really though, no hero stuff?”
“None. I’m focused on school. Well, and Jason. Dates are very nice, but mostly I’m focused on school. You can’t blame me for enjoying dates too!” Danny said.
Jazz laughed and shook her head. “No, I can’t. I’m glad you’re enjoying dates. Just try to stay out of the business, okay? I want you to be able to just enjoy your life. You have enough obligations waiting for you when you’re dead.”
“Do we have to work when we’re dead?” Tim asked desperately. “Please tell me we don’t have to work when we’re dead. That’s when I was planning to sleep.”
“No, Tim,” Jazz said gently. “Most people don’t work when they’re dead. Danny’s just an idiot—”
“Hey!”
“—who became the Ghost King without realizing what he was doing. His forever job starts when he dies.”
“Wait wait wait,” Dick spread his hands. “Danny is royalty?”
“Mhum.”
“Oh my god,” Dick said with a gleeful smile that Jason didn’t trust one bit. “Does that make Jason a prince? Queen? Does it feel like you’re in one of your regency books, Jay? What’s it like.”
Jason groaned and buried his face into Danny’s hair. “I hate you.”
“No you don’t,” Dick cooed.
“Oh good, Jason can work then,” Tim said. “I just want to sleep.”
“You can sleep now,” Jason pointed out. “No one is stopping you. Hell, Alfred would encourage it.”
“Can’t,” Tim said. “I’ve got to get this PR stuff done. Is this a diplomatic issue now too?”
“What can I answer to help?” Jazz asked in such a patently big sibling way that Jason glanced up to exchange a look with Dick. Having one more person after Tim to rest couldn’t hurt.
Tim pursed his lips. “We’ve already done the usual asking for respect during this difficult time. Babs and I have been working on making sure the part of the video where Danny asked Jason to press the button is in circulation and in the right hands. There have been some pointed emails sent. Bruce is going to go on tomorrow and give a brief statement— which we need some answers for. We’ve got Clark coming to interview in a few days to do a proper story. Luckily Vickie Val has made it easy for us to go out of Gotham for that story with how she’s been behaving.
“They’ve found out about your parents, of course, but we were able to respond instantly with your name change and, in all essence what was nearly emancipation with how quickly you did it and moved out. There are some character stories from old classmates though calling you odd but also defense from current ones that we’ve been pushing further up in the SEO. Between those details and his survival, it’s no wonder that the question of Danny being a meta is circling That’s the main thing we need to know how to address and if we want to play into it.”
Jason had to take a moment to respond to all that. He’d been so focused on helping Danny heal and stay happy that he hadn’t even thought half of that through. He knew the press were out there, of course they were, but… “You’ve really worked this out, haven’t you?”
Tim just blinked owlishly at him. “Of course I have. It’s what I do. I know you didn't like me looking into Danny when we first found out about you dating him, but… this is why I do those things. Not just to protect the family from other people, but to protect the people who get close to us. I can help direct the conversation because I know ahead of time that things like the Fentons will come up."
“Thank you Tim, really.”
“Um… you’re welcome,” Tim said before he looked back down at his tablet. “We do need to decide if we go the meta route at all. Would that cause issues with the Fentons? Do they also hate metas?”
“No,” Jazz said. “Well, they would basically look at superheroes to make sure they weren’t ghosts in disguise or possessed, but other than that they didn’t really mention metas. It was actually pretty much a non topic in our town with everything else.”
“But we’d have to be careful with what we say I can do or… well, they’ll clock me as a ghost. I’ve never wanted to find out what would happen then.”
“Is that why you didn’t want to go to a hospital?” Dick asked in that carefully gentle tone of his.
Danny shrugged. “That but more old fears. There used to be a group called the GIW that were government funded ghost hunters that had legal clearance, basically, to experiment and exterminate any ecto-entities. I really don’t want to be dissected like some classroom frog.”
“Vivisected,” Jazz corrected in such an absent way that it spoke of old arguments.
Jason clutched Danny closer to him.
“It’s okay. They never really were very above the board, it turned out, and when the power changed hands they lost their funding and just sort of disappeared.”
“But it doesn’t mean there fear did,” Dick summed up.
“We will look into them,” Damian said, standing. “To be certain that they are gone and no longer a threat to you or Todd. Drake, you will not be needed on this while you are in this sleep deprived state. I will seek Gordon’s help instead.”
“Hey! I can still—”
“Finish up asking us questions,” Jazz interrupted smoothly. “It wouldn’t be hard to spin Danny as a mild meta from the results of a lab accident.”
“Maybe even give a half truth,” Jason said. “He was electrocuted around some chemicals and he ended up with a mild resistance to it.”
“That could work,” Tim said, tapping away on his tablet. “Generally useless in day to day life other than cutting down on annoyances when wiring something but just enough to survive this sort of trap. Have Bruce throw in a joke about how Danny produces a lot of static electricity or something to lighten the mood.”
“And it would make it seem like Danny has a resistance, not a weakness, in case anyone tries something again,” Jason added.
“That would be nice. Being tased really, really sucks,” Danny whined.
Jason pressed a kiss to Danny’s temple. “I know, fish.”
“Yes, alright, Bruce will need to put it in his own Brucie wording but I think this will work,” Tim said with a little nod. “See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?”

AN: Rereading through this, this might just be the whole chapter. Maybe I'll make the interview it's own chapter to cut down on the shock of going to that style of pov and piece. And then the final* chapter? Thoughts thoughts...

MY LOVE!!! Honestly, if Liam didn't watch so many gamers on YouTube, I would be so clueless. I never got into video games (because I'm so so bad at them you guys it is actually embarrassing) and I never really watched streamers on YouTube or anything. But I know that some of them have like a cult following and so I am picturing Steve to be one of those here. Please don't ask what games he would play because this is a choose your own adventure part of the story. - Mickala ❤️
-----------------------------------------------------
Everyone made fun of Steve for how much he talked with his hands. Even on camera, his hands were constantly in the frame, moving and emphasizing his passion for whatever game he was playing for that stream.
He should have realized that wearing a ring on his usually bare hands would have given him away.
It was his first livestream competition since Eddie proposed on their trip to the Maldives.
He was still a little high off of, well, everything, and he wasn’t thinking clearly.
He ignored the first question that popped up.
who got you that ring?
He shared some basic personal stuff with his fans and followers, but he kept most things private, especially his relationship.
But then questions kept coming in.
R U ENGAGED???
usually the girl wears the ring right
If you’re taken I might have to unsubscribe
The last one made him pause.
It’s not like he was an idiot, he knew that there would always be a handful of people who followed him because he was attractive. He didn’t mind, especially because some of them would message him and explain that they ended up getting into games because of him.
“Okay, wait. Sorry guys. Um. I wanna address something before we start the actual stream.” He held his hand up, looking over at the ring Eddie proposed with. “I share a lot with you guys. I came out about a year ago during a stream as bisexual, and it really shouldn’t have been much of a shock, but it caused a bit of a…thing.” He grimaced. “And I guess most of the reason that I came out then was because my boyfriend had come out as well, and it felt like something we could do together without actually doing it together. Most of you know I was just gone for a week on a much needed vacation. I was with my boyfriend, and he proposed while we were there. I said yes because he is the only person I’ve ever wanted to spend my life with.”
Steve put his hand down, sighing.
“I understand if that makes some of you unfollow me, but I do hope you look at yourself and try to come to terms with why that is what makes you unfollow someone you enjoy watching. Anyways, the ring is beautiful, and it's a simpler version of one he wears every day, so it means even more.”
He felt relieved, but also a little stressed, and knew he’d be calling Eddie as soon as this was over to talk to him about everything.
“Let’s get gaming!” He gave his best smile to the camera.
—-------------------------------------
“Yeah, we had a nice week off together, alone, and I finally got to propose. I don’t think we left the bed for 24 hours after that,” Eddie laughed.
The interviewer laughed too, used to Eddie’s jokes and blunt answers.
“I’m glad you got to spend some time just the two of you. This has been a busy world tour for you and Corroded Coffin and you’re only halfway through!” The interviewer, Hannah, stated. She smiled at him when he nodded. “Anything new planned for the second half of the tour?”
“We can’t give out secrets, Hannah, you know that,” Eddie smirked. “But Gareth did say I should tell you about one thing.”
Gareth definitely had a crush on Hannah and had pouted endlessly about being scheduled for a different interview at the same time as Eddie’s interview with her.
“Oh?” she leaned forward, eyes gleaming.
She maybe had a crush on him, too.
“He actually wrote a song that’ll be on our next album. He doesn’t usually get bit with the writing bug, but someone’s inspired him,” he winked at her, smiling at her blush. “Anyway, it’s been added to the setlist for the second leg of the tour and we’re all really excited for everyone to hear it.”
Eddie felt his phone vibrating in his pocket multiple times. All the guys knew he was in an interview and couldn’t answer a call, so who the hell was calling him?
It was easy enough to ignore through Hannah’s next question, until it started again.
He reached in his pocket and checked to see who it was, eyes going wide when he saw ‘Stevie’ with a picture of them on their vacation lighting up his screen.
Steve never called twice in a row unless it was an emergency. He knew if Eddie didn’t answer, he was truly busy.
He felt his heart racing as he looked back up at Hannah, who instantly seemed to catch on to something happening.
“We’re going to a commercial break, but when we’re back, Eddie’s gonna share a few hints about the next album!” Hannah said, immediately shutting the mics off and gesturing for him to get up.
Eddie took off his headphones and stood, walking out of the room as he answered the phone.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?”
“I’m sorry to bother you, I just-”
“Hey, no, it’s not bothering me. I was just in a radio interview with Hannah so we had to cut to commercial break before I could answer. What’s wrong?” he asked, concerned that something terrible had happened.
“Fuck, I forgot that was right now. I’m sorry. Call me back when you get to the bus,” Steve seemed like he was trying to rush off the phone.
“No, Stevie, wait. What’s wrong?” his tone was firm enough to let Steve know he wasn’t going to let this drop.
“Um. I just had a livestream thing. And like, people asked about the ring, so I told them I was engaged and some people just didn’t take it that well and then I went online and some people have apparently put it together that the Steve you talk about is me because of something I mentioned about my vacation and something you posted about the vacation and so I think everyone’s gonna know and I’m sorry,” Steve was panting by the end, speaking a million miles an hour literally taking the breath from him.
“Okay, well, we knew this would probably happen eventually, my love. I’ll just call the guys and we can talk to Chrissy about it if it gets picked up by the media. No reason to panic,” Eddie tried to calm him down while watching through the window to the recording booth where Hannah seemed to be introducing a song to kill more time.
“But I ruined our plan!”
“No, love. People ruined our plan. And it’s okay, anyway. We’ll figure it out.”
“But your fans will be mad that it’s me. I’m just…me!”
“You’re not just anything and any fan of mine who says or thinks that, isn’t a fan,” Eddie sighed. “I love you, and we will figure this out. Whatever we gotta do, okay?”
Steve let out a long breath before responding.
“I love you too. Tell Hannah I said hi?”
“Of course. I love you so much, okay? ‘Til death and beyond.”
Steve let out a small laugh.
“You’re not allowed to use those lyrics in the vows. But I love you so much, too.”
“We can discuss that later. I wrote you a very metal love song that I fully intend to use some of in the vows. Okay, bye!”
He hung up before Steve could argue and walked back into the studio, mouthing an apology to Hannah, who just waved it off with a smile.
Everything would be fine.
—-------------------------------------------
“The lighting isn’t ideal, but it’ll be fine,” Steve was pacing, double checking his set up while Eddie watched.
He tried helping, but kept being told not to touch things, so he ended up just sitting on the hotel bed.
Steve had traveled halfway across the country to do this, his stress was at an all-time high, and Eddie didn’t need to get his head bitten off.
“Five minutes,” Steve said, shaking his hands nervously.
“Come here, sweetheart,” Eddie said, waving him over to the bed.
“No, you’ll distract me.”
“Yes, which is exactly what you need for a minute. Come here.”
Steve sighed, but went over to him, dropping onto the bed and resting his head against Eddie’s shoulder.
“What’s got you so worried?”
“Everything.”
Eddie sighed.
“But specifically.”
“I just don’t want you or the guys to lose fans because of me,” Steve was playing with the edges of the hole in Eddie’s jeans absentmindedly.
“Sweet boy, we lose fans because we endorse a certain amp brand over another. We’ll be fine.”
“This is bigger, though. I’m just a nobody who got lucky on YouTube playing some games,” Steve whined.
“And I loved you before that. If they don’t want me to be happy, they aren’t real fans anyway. You’re my future, not whatever woman still thinks she has a shot with my gay ass,” Eddie said.
“But it isn’t just you who suffers.”
“None of us suffer. We lose some homophobic, idiotic fans who shouldn’t ever have claimed to be fans at all. None of us want people like that around.”
Steve’s alarm went off to signal one minute before the livestream started.
He jumped up and pulled Eddie up with him.
They’d already gone over everything together, discussed it with Chrissy and the guys, even Steve’s manager, Robin, about how this would work.
Steve would pretty much act like it was any other livestream, but Eddie would be there for the first five minutes or so so they could do a quick explanation of things.
Eddie would do a phone interview with Hannah in 30 minutes while Steve was gaming, covering a bit more and answering some questions about their relationship.
Then they’d both have a night off to decompress in the hotel before Steve had to fly back home and Eddie had to head to the next tour stop.
Hopefully, the buzz would die down relatively quickly.
Steve did his normal intro, but Eddie’s hand rested on his knee out of sight, squeezing once when he heard his voice start to shake a little while introducing Eddie.
“There’s been some rumors about us, and we just wanna be completely honest about things so that the rumors stop,” Steve continued. “First of all, we’ve been together for almost four years. Way before I got anywhere with YouTube, before Corroded Coffin had even released their first album. And we were friends long before that.”
“Even though I had the biggest crush on him in high school, I didn’t admit I was in love with him until we both moved to Chicago. Wasted years,” Eddie shook his head.
“Second,” Steve smirked, looking over at him for a moment. “The week off in the middle of his tour had been planned for Jeff to go home and be with his family for his wife’s birthday and daughter’s graduation.”
“Anyone who thinks Steve threw a fit about needing a vacation and made the band take a break is just saying so out of spite that we had to move around one of the tour dates to make the week off work. It’s not up to you to come up with a narrative,” Eddie added, brow raised like he was chastising children.
“And finally, most importantly, what either of us choose to share is up to us. We do not owe anyone any explanations. Our relationship is ours. Being public figures already takes away a lot of our autonomy, and this is something neither of us will budge on. We are willing to share our happiness, but we are not willing to let everyone become a part of our life together.”
Sometimes, Steve said things in such a way that Eddie couldn’t do anything but stare at him in awe. He loved him more than anything, and sometimes the only thing he could do was kiss him.
He did so now, not exactly forgetting they were live streaming, just not really caring.
Steve tensed for a second, but then relaxed, cupping his cheek and smiling into the kiss.
Eddie pulled away and looked back at the camera.
“On that note, I’m gonna leave Steve here to his gaming. If you aren’t nice, I’ll ban you from Corroded Coffin shows for life,” he waved before standing and leaving the camera’s view.
Steve rolled his eyes, but smiled fondly as Eddie walked out of the bedroom, blowing kisses back at Steve the entire way.
—-------------------------------------------
After that, Eddie made random appearances on Steve’s live streams, and Steve flew out to a handful of shows to support Eddie.
It’s not that they were hiding before, but they just hadn’t felt like they should have to try to.
Now they didn’t.
Steve even did a Q&A with the band on tour while playing games with them.
They were all pretty terrible at it, complaining most of the time about how D&D was so much easier than this. Eddie didn’t play, but he sat next to Steve and braided his hair while he kicked their asses, asking them all the questions that popped up from people watching.
When he got to one for him, he smiled and kissed the top of Steve’s head.
“This question is for me. How did you know Steve was the one?” The guys all groaned, but they were smiling. “Well, I knew he was the one back in my first senior year. I tripped on the step into the gym and Steve was the only one there. He helped me up and smiled at me, and I was a goner.”
“He’s lying to you all,” Steve said without looking away from the game. “He knew when I made him homemade banana bread. His exact words were, ‘I’m gonna marry you so hard someday, Harrington.’ and then six months later he proposed.”
“Both can be true,” Eddie pouted.
Steve paused the game and turned to him, kissing the tip of his nose.
“Every moment I have with you proves you’re the one for me,” he said before turning back to the game and leaving Eddie silently shocked.
“This is the last time we come on this thing, Steve,” Gareth said.
“Yeah. You broke him,” Jeff agreed.

FAMILY WITHIN | KAZ BREKKER
Summary: You have a crush on Kaz, and Jesper and Nina have taken it as their mission to get you two together - and maybe the first step succeeds.
Tumblr media
You had never been one to believe in love at first sight. But Kaz Brekker changed that view, as the man pretty much stole your heart like a thief he was the moment you had first talked with him. It was foolish to fall for a man like him, you knew that - but you really couldn’t help it.
And after some weeks of drooling after him, you had ended up confiding about your feelings to Nina who had picked up your heartbeat and told you that. And Jesper had of course overheard it too. At first, they had been surprised about it and then tried to not talk about it and that lasted for months, and you knew it was because they knew it’s highly unlikely Kaz would ever develop feelings for you too. Even though Kaz always joined you for breakfast, asked you to help him with planning heists and all that. But lately, Kaz had stopped joining you on the breakfast table and also insisted he no longer needed you for planning heists, and somehow Jesper and Nina both had been on you, pestering you into talking to Kaz about something else than work. They had presented you a ridiculous idea - about Kaz liking you back and avoiding you because he tries to suppress his feelings.
“What would I even say to him? ‘Hey Kaz! It’s a beautiful day! Customers love our drinks! Come join me to a cup of coffee!’” you mock-cheerfully said, swinging your head as you did, and then rolled your eyes, your shoulders slumping. “He’d look at me weird and then steer the discussion to somewhere else. Somewhere else being, in other words, work.”
“Well…” Jesper squinted his other eye, the corner of his lips going up. “You could… tell him that you’ve noticed him avoiding you outside work and asking if there’s a reason. And then proceed hinting you have feelings for him. You shouldn’t tell him straight up about your feelings, but-”
You scoffed, cutting your friend off. “Oh Jesper, wow, a great idea!” you exclaimed, your voice dripping with sarcasm. “But I’d rather die. Honestly you guys, you think Kaz would ever love me back? No. He avoids me because he thinks I’m annoying.”
Nina laid a look at the man sitting little farther away, looking through something. “I wish you would hear his heartbeat when he looks at you. It jumps, every time he sees you. He may be good in hiding his feelings on the outside, but his heartbeat doesn’t lie.”
“And the looks he lays on you, he surely doesn’t do it on purpose, but they scream how he’s crazy about you.” Jesper smirked, glancing at Kaz too.
You sighed, lowering your gaze at your drink, willing yourself not to look at Kaz with them. “Don’t do that,” you mumbled. “Don’t give me false hopes.”
Nina’s smile faded away from that. “Why would I give you false hopes? I would never ridicule you, especially not about matters like this.”
Jesper nodded, taking a sip of his drink before looking at you. “You are one my best friends. You helped me with Wylan, so it’s my turn to help you with Kaz.”
You were quiet for a moment. “Kaz says love is a weakness.”
Jesper shrugged, wrinkling his nose. “Yeah, because he doesn’t want to admit he’s fallen for you.”
You finally risked a glance at Kaz, secretly hoping you’d catch him glance at you too - you could smile softly at him, and see a hint of whether Nina and Jesper were right. But of course he didn’t. His eyes were glued on the parchment in front of him.
Nina’s hand grabbed your shoulder as she leaned close to your ear. “Go to him. Offer your help.”
You swallowed, trying to tell your feet to get up, to walk to Kaz, see how he reacts if you actually went to him, sat across from him - started to speak with him.
You shook your head. “I- I can’t.”
Nina sighed, standing up. “If you won’t, I’ll go tell him myself.”
Your gaze snapped at Nina that instant, grabbing her arm. “You wouldn’t.”
She smirked. “If that’s the only way to get the train leave the station, then yes, I would. I’m tired of watching you two drooling at each other.”
You stood up as well then, smoothing out your trousers and shirt, feeling your face heat up in a rapid pace. “Right. Okay. I’ll go.”
Nina and Jesper shared a look of victory, and you turned around, taking in a deep breath as you made your way to Kaz. He looked up to you when you approached, holding his gaze for a second before dropping it back down at the parchment - which you now saw being a blueprint.
“Another heist?” you asked, maybe a little too briskly and then pursed your lips. “Um, can I sit here?”
Kaz glanced up to you again, sighing before dropping it back on the parchment. “Why?”
“Bored. Jesper and Nina are talking about their love lives, and um, I felt lonely so- no no, that came out wrong, I don’t mean–” your heartbeat quickened up again and your face heated up even more. “Um, I mean, I saw you sitting here and thought that… it’s nice to sit with my boss sometimes?”
You wanted to slap yourself for being so awkward and grimaced at yourself when Kaz wasn’t looking. He paused for a moment, before nodding just slightly. You sat down across from him, trying to shift yourself so you wouldn’t look suspicious before you dropped your eyes on the parchment, inspecting it for a moment. “Van der Velden manor?”
Kaz frowned, looking up at you again. “You know it?”
A soft smile spread on your lips, remembering your childhood. “There used to be a playground nearby. We always played there with my friends as children, the old housekeeping lady was always shouting at us over the fence to keep our voice down. We weren’t even that loud,” you snorted and then paused for a moment. “Is there something special to snatch?”
Kaz squinted his eyes at you for a moment, before he nodded slowly. “An artefact came in a couple of weeks ago. Priceless, they call it. It’s a jewelry set called ‘Wonder of the Sea’. It’s worth looking into.”
You nodded, laying your hands on the table as you leaned forward to inspect the blueprint more carefully. You bit your lip, tapping your fingers against the wood, squeezing your eyes shut. Then you slowly looked up, forcing your eyes open. “Kaz?”
“Hm?”
“Why have you avoided me?”
He paused, but not lifting his gaze from the blueprint. You could almost see wheels turning in his head. Then he continued tracing his finger along the hallway. “I haven’t avoided you.”
Of course he said that.
“Um, okay. It’s just that, we used to eat breakfast together and sit together til late night looking through blueprints. And now, suddenly, you have said you no longer have time for breakfast and you also don’t need my help. I just… it doesn’t feel likely that these two things changed so suddenly and I’d like to know if… I did something or if there’s–” you swallowed. “If there’s anything… else?”
Kaz paused again for a few seconds. “What else would there be?”
You mulled over your words. You knew you wouldn’t be able to ask if he has feelings for you this early on, nor you could confess your feelings for him, but you didn’t know how else would you reply to his question. So instead, you left the question unanswered and you sat in silence for a good fifteen minutes, only listening to the noise the Crow Club provided.
Then you spoke again. “Why have you started to come down here to work?”
“Change of scenery.”
“A quiet office switched to noisy club area?”
“I’m not working here on game nights. And it’s easier to keep customers on check if they know I’ll see when they misbehave.”
You fell silent for a minute again, before you mumbled, maybe without thinking it through, “I heard you’re only working down here when I’m here.”
“Nothing more than a coincidence.”
Of course not.
“Kaz, I… I want you to know that I’ll always be grateful that you took me in to the Dregs. I’ve found a family here.” Within you, you wanted to add, but knew it’d be too bold.
Kaz’s dark eyes flickered up to meet yours again, and this time he held his gaze for longer than last time. You offered him a soft smile, before he turned to look at the blueprint again. You then stood up, going back to Nina and Jesper, who were immediately asking about how it went. But you didn’t even know how it had went - the discussion had given mixed signals. Nina assured you that Kaz’s heartbeat jumped every time you spoke to him - and you really hoped it’s true.
Mornings in Ketterdam weren’t pretty. There wasn’t sunlight and only birds singing were crows. So it wasn’t easy to wake up, but you forced yourself to get out of the bed anyway - sleeping in could result in being late from breakfast, and since lunch was often very late, you didn’t want to miss it.
You dressed up and made your way downstairs, stretching and yawning as you went, and once at kitchen, you set the table with a loaf of bread and butter and went to take a cup from the cupboard. Then you heard a click from behind you, and got startled slightly, turning around with wide eyes to see Kaz standing there. You let out a chuckle of relief, clutching your heart.
“Kaz, you scared me,” you breathed out. “Um, did you need anything?”
He just looked over at the little table. “I supposed I could have some breakfast.”
You stared at him for a moment, before realising that the talk you had had yesterday maybe had some effect on him, and you couldn’t help but grin, nodding and taking another cup from the cupboard.
And so you sat at the breakfast table together for the first time in weeks, and even though you didn’t really talk, you felt like this could develop into something more over time…

recruitment gone… right?
platonic!steven grant/marc spector x teenage!reader
summary: who in their right mind sends a teenager to recruit a dangerous vigilante all on their own? oh sam and fucking bucky.
warnings: teenage avenger reader, inaccuracies, clueless steven being an overall mess and a huge cap fan, violence, swearing, gen z shit? perhaps idk, 2k word count
Tumblr media
request: ‘can you do a father figure Marc Spector/Steven Grant x A teenage avenger who was sent to recruit him? I imagine the reader being a typical Gen Z kid with a sarcastic sense of humor, but meaning well.’
notes: loosely based off this request i got MONTHS ago. i’m so sorry it’s taken forever this has literally been in my drafts for a year. not a whole lot of father figure-ing going on but i think it’s a funny little neutral recruitment blurb/one-shot. enjoy. also not sure if this is gen-z enough but i was not going to make this obnoxiously “relatable”
Tumblr media
“It shouldn’t be too hard.”
“Sam, I want you to think about what you just said. Then think about who you’re talking to. And then… consider the possibility that your plan might actually work if you send Barnes.”
A distant voice shouted through the speaker of your phone. “No can do, kid. Recruitment is below my paygrade now!”
You rolled your eyes, shuffling down a busy sidewalk in the midst of London. “Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot I’m talking to the big champs now.”
You heard Sam chuckle in amusement, and you could imagine him shaking his head at your words. “You know what you gotta do. The sooner you get it done, the sooner you can get back to base. Kick some ass with the big champs.”
“Yeah, yeah,” it was time to get serious. “Got it, Wilson. I’ll check in later.”
Instead, it was Bucky who answered. “You’ve got this, squirt!”
Rolling your eyes, you didn’t even give Sam a chance to get a word in before you were ending the call, stuffing your phone into your pocket and narrowing in on the bus stop ahead.
This is stupid, you thought as you waited a safe distance away. You couldn’t risk your target spotting you before you could properly assess them. Who in their right mind sends a teenager—a freaking teenager—to recruit one of England’s most dangerous vigilantes?
You’re not scared—you were far more than capable to defend yourself, even against the famed Moon Knight—but it feels out of your way, something you’ve never been asked to do. But of course, as an Avenger, this was your duty.
You couldn’t help but think of this whole thing as a personal attack. With Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson assuming the mantle of interim leaders of the Avengers (or rather what remains of them), this whole mission seemed like their version of a practical joke.
Those two loved you with all their heart, you didn’t doubt it, but they take the role of “fun uncles” a bit too seriously.
But anyway, this recruitment... This isn’t fun. Not in the slightest.
This is like being a salesperson.
Shudder.
Finally, you catch sight of your target—Steven Grant, an extremely sleepy, stumbling gift-shoppist who had appeared at the bus stop surprisingly early for once.
He seems gentle enough, guard mostly down, clutching his bag with a paranoid grip but that was the only thing tense about him. He’s technically older than you, not ridiculously so, but a bit younger than Sam.
You watch as his lips start forming some words; it’s subtle, nothing anyone would really notice unless they were analyzing him piece by piece like you currently were.
Ah. You realized with a pleased smile. Steven Grant and Marc Spector are working together.
You’re snapped out of your thoughts by the sound of the bus arriving, squeaking loudly as it stopped in the street.
Showtime.
There was a click in your brain, or that’s what it felt like at least, and a quick scanning of your surroundings made it easy to instantly blend in.
Tumblr media
Steven Grant was having a decent morning. He actually woke up in time, ate a decent breakfast, and rushed out of the house with ten minutes to spare.
Even Marc had been pleasant this morning, making unusual small talk as Steven went about his business, getting ready for work.
And everything was well. Up until now—as he stood in the bus, trying to keep himself from falling asleep on the passengers around him, despite the extra shot of espresso he’d slipped into his drink this morning.
Steven.
He jolted awake, pulling his head away from a man’s shoulder with a small ‘sorry!’
But before he could doze off once more, something odd came over him. A strange tingling feeling, as if he was being watched.
It snapped the drowsiness right out of his system, eyeing everyone suspiciously.
You feel it too, don’t you? Something isn’t right.
“What—” He mumbled quietly, searching for the source but coming up emptyhanded.
There was nothing peculiar or odd about his fellow commuters.
So, he continued about his day, feeling that unsettling eye on him at all times but unaware as to its source.
It was only when his shift was over, that he was walking home, that he decided this charade had gone on for far too long.
Despite Marc’s pleas to let him front, Steven stopped in his dead tracks, away from any curious eyes.
“Oi, who’s there?”
Great job, Steven. If that isn’t the most cliché thing to say before the main character gets killed in a horror movie. Marc sighed.
“Shut up,” hissed Steven quietly. “You know I don’t watch horror movies—”
Steven blinked and suddenly you’re there, standing in front of him as if you’d been there the entire time.
“AH!”
The scream echoed down the alley, high-pitched and nearly startling you into a similar yelp.
But you were quite used to your presence spooking others, it’s a part of your abilities that you’d never been able to control.
Chest heaving and cheeks tinted with embarrassment, Steven gave you a suspicious glare.
“Oh, it’s—it’s just a kid,” he tried to brush off his embarrassing reaction.
You scoffed, a bruise to your ego. “Not just a kid.”
“Well, I know what I’m seeing,” Steven argued. “And you look like a child—“
“Firstly,” you’re staring at Mr. Knight’s suit, taken aback by the change in his appearance that you’d apparently triggered by startling him so bad. “I’m seventeen. Second, I thought you had a whole—“
You aimlessly motioned around your head in a sort of halo way, confusing the ever fuck out of Steven who just stood there blankly.
“A whole w-what?” He gaped, desperate to know what you— a complete stranger — had to say about his kickass suit.
“You know, a whole cape thing goin’ on.”
Ha! Colonel Sanders.
Steven wished there was a way to punch Marc.
“Now, you’re just talking about my lesser counterpart,” Steven shrugged, trying to hide the fact that he had just been offended to the core.
“Ouch, hard feelings?”
Steven pulled his lips to the side. “You could say that— wait. How do you know about—?”
“Let’s cut to the chase,” you interrupted. “I was sent here on behalf of an organization that is really interested in having you join our ranks. Normally, they’d send someone else but you’re stuck with me so—“
“What organization? What ranks? You’re hiring?” I guess we’re both interrupting each other now. You fought the urge to roll your eyes. Even if the task was annoying, you wouldn’t be returning to base with a new recruit if you hit him with a bunch of attitude.
Patience was not your strongest virtue. “Not exactly. As soon as you put that blade down, maybe we can talk some more.”
Steven looked down with a jolt, as if he hadn’t realized he’d been white-knuckling the weapon since you appeared.
Slowly, he started to store the blade before Marc cut in hastily. Hello? Are you seriously letting a kid tell you what to do? A kid who appeared out of thin air?
Steven caught Marc’s glare in the reflection of a small puddle, the road damp from London’s regular showers. He looked much more menacing than Steven, even with his half-assed suit.
He hadn’t said it yet, but Steven knew Marc was aching to take over. And it was probably the smartest option- Steven wasn’t the best at confrontation.
“Don’t hurt a minor please,” he pleaded quietly. Marc narrowed his eyes at the notion. But he nodded his head dismissively.
With a sigh, Steven allowed Marc to front.
All the while, you minded your own business as well as you could, staring at the sky suspiciously. You wouldn’t be surprised if Sam had sent Redwing to spy on you. Not because he didn’t trust you of course, but because him and Bucky loved to get a laugh in whenever they could.
“Alright, let’s cut the bullshit. Who sent you? Harrow?”
You nearly gave yourself whiplash from how fast your head snapped forward.
The suit was different, cape billowing behind him, and eyes even whiter than before. They seemed to glow-- no, they were glowing-- and glare into the depths of your soul. You were almost intimidated.
“Who the hell is Harrow? Absolutely not. Since you asked so nicely, I was sent on behalf of Captain America.”
Captain America? He gripped the crescent blade tighter.
He considered your words carefully, staring at you with the utmost suspicion. Lip curling up, head already starting to shake in disapproval, annoyance consuming him altogether—
“That’s bullshit.”
Tumblr media
“That’s- that’s amazing!”
You couldn’t help the smirk on your face. “It is pretty cool,” you shrugged thirty minutes later, chewing through a particularly large bite of your warm bagel. You were sat in the corner of a small, dingy bakery. What it lacked in aesthetics, the bakery definitely made up for in flavor.
“Do you think you could maybe, like I dunno, introduce us?” Steven asked with an excitement that barely kept him still in his seat.
You’re surprised he hasn’t gathered the attention of everyone else in the bakery, but for once, you’re not the one worried about being on the opposite end of a judgmental eye.
Being an Avenger in these post-Blip days isn’t as easy as it was before… stack that on top of being a ‘child’ and it’s the perfect recipe for disaster.
‘They’re too young!’
‘They can barely contain their abilities!’
‘The Avengers already ruined our lives before! Why should we trust a child?!’
Even if you denied it a million times, there was always a small part of you that craved their approval. Their vote of trust…Maybe this mission would help with that, once they learned that it was you who got the infamous bad-guy-turned-good Moon Knight to join the world’s mightiest superheroes…
Well, maybe it wasn’t exactly you who got Steven to willingly agree. But there was absolutely no way in hell you were ever telling Sam that it was his pull that got the deal sealed.
“Sure,” you smiled back at Steven who just about died at your response. The coffee in his mug jostled out and splashed onto the table. “Big Captain America fan?”
“As of late,” Steven grinned. “So, when do we leave? Is—” He gasped suddenly and lowered his voice to a whisper. “Is Captain America coming to pick me up?”
Jesus Christ. Marc groaned. This was a fucking mistake.
Steven ignored him and looked at you expectantly.
You glanced up from your phone where you’d been rapidly typing something up. You did a double-take as you processed his question.
“Absolutely,” you deadpanned. “He’ll send a car for you. Probably meet you at the airport with his private jet.”
Steven’s eyes grew wider with every word. Marc was scowling in the reflection of the window behind you.
“Bollocks...” he breathed, staring down at his lap in disbelief.
You narrowed your eyes at him.
“I don’t even know what to say. I mean, who—who would’ve thought they would send a seventeen-year-old to recruit little ole me—”
You saw something click in his brain. He looked up with glazed over irritation. “...you’re... you’re not being serious.”
“Of course, I’m not being serious, Grant. I got here alone and I’m more than capable of getting us back to base. You can save the fangirling for when we finally touch down alright? He’ll meet us there.”
Steven pursed his lips at you.
Rolling your eyes, you finished your text and locked your phone with a click. “I’m being serious this time.”
Excitement poured into his gaze again. You’re not sure how Marc feels about it, only that after explaining yourself in very, very specific detail, he was open to the discussion. But it must be a mutual decision at this point. You doubt Steven would’ve gotten this far if his counterpart was fighting against it.
“Marc is on board?”
“Absolutely.”
Don’t lie. I’m regretting this more and more each second.
Steven continued. “Should I... should I pack my bags?”
“Yeah, that’d be a good idea,” you agreed nonchalantly.
“... now?”
You tapped your phone and glanced at the time. “If you want to make our flight in less than an hour, I’d say so.”
“Bollocks!” Steven exclaimed, nearly knocking the table over on his mad dash out the door.
You snickered as he slammed into a lady on his way out.

Zipper Extra VII
As much as I love this couple, I struggled to come up with an idea for this so I hope this works.
~3.5k words
“I want it to be perfect,” she whispered.
“For whom, m’love?” He wondered. “For me? You’re there. We could get married in trash bags and be married by an alien,” he reminded her making her smile so gorgeously it made Harry’s heart skip a beat.
Tumblr media
Harry was losing his mind again.
There was a ring on her finger and somehow that made her more enticing to the men that saw her in public. At the coffee shop, Harry would look at the different roasts to take home and someone would immediately start chatting with her asking to buy her coffee unaware that Harry was only a few feet away. Of course she stopped them politely, explained her fiancé was right there. “Oh, I didn’t even notice the ring,” the man murmured, further turning Harry green with envy.
When they were at the grocery store, the bagger insisted on lifting her items and offered to take them to her car while Harry headed back to grab something they inevitably forgot. Once more she assured the man that her fiancé was more than capable of doing so. “Hmm...I didn’t see your ring,” he admitted.
Of course they didn’t.
Why would anyone bother to look away from her pretty face for even a second to see if she was happily taken?
It soured Harry’s mood immensely. Naturally, she was kind about it on the ride home. She didn’t speak about it at all, merely held his hand as he drove and gave it a gentle squeeze every couple of minutes. She would tell him all about her ideas for their wedding; how she wanted sunset colors for her bouquet: peach, golden yellow, some light orange colors, sprigs of purple, and rosy pinks. “I think it will offset the blue dresses the girls will wear really nicely,” she explained.
He typically grunted in response still feeling frustrated over how someone blatantly flirted with her. It shouldn’t have surprised him. She was so pretty and so nice. It was a wonder Harry didn’t resort to physical fights. Eventually after a few grunts she would finally ask. “Do you have any ideas of what you want? I’ve been struggling with a seating arrangement plan. I see lots of cool things on Pinterest, but nothing really speaks to me.”
Almost always it worked. Harry would clear his throat, forced to answer her question. He had to forget about the jealousy that filled him because he would rather die than not help his fiancée with whatever it was she wanted. “M’not too sure,” he murmured. “What are the options?” Because he was not going to be one of those men who did nothing to help plan. She went through hundreds of different options and questions. They were pretty agreeable on most fronts.
“Having the seats listed on a mirror is really popular these days. I went to a wedding in college that was on a windowpane and that was cool. I’m really into this thing I saw though it almost looks like a clothesline—little clips hold the cards in place for people to find it.”
Harry could hear the way her voice changed when she talked about the little clothesline. “I like that,” he smiled.
“Yeah? You’re not just saying that?” She always asked.
“No, kitten. Course not,” if he didn’t like it, he would tell her. “I think it’ll be beautiful.”
“I was also thinking about our welcome sign.”
“Hmm?”
Harry knew she was trying to trick him into feeling less jealous the longer she spoke. It worked too. “I’ve been trying to come up with something punny. Finally found ‘you’ve been sentenced to a lifetime of happiness,’” she giggled. Harry snorted and shook his head. “Is that lame?” He glanced at her peripherally as they pulled onto their apartment’s street.
“Not if y’want it, love,” he assured her.
“I know, but I want you—”
“I think it’s adorable,” he pulled into a spot on the street and parked. He turned to her finally, gazing into her soft, pretty eyes. He looked at her lips and brought his hand to her face admiring how warm her skin felt beneath his palm. She was so pretty every moment of the day it was incredible she was all his to admire.
“It’ll have a gavel below the words, and I want it to be decorated with the flowers we pick,” she continued.
“You’ve already made the sale, kitten,” he chuckled, brushed his thumb on her lip.
“I want it to be perfect,” she whispered.
“For whom, m’love?” He wondered. “For me? You’re there. We could get married in trash bags and be married by an alien,” he reminded her making her smile so gorgeously it made Harry’s heart skip a beat.
“Well,” she sighed. “When you put it that way.”
“M’sorry m’a jealous monster,” he whispered quietly.
She blushed below his hand, and she glanced from his uninterrupted gaze. “I don’t think you’re a monster. I don’t think you have anything to be jealous of either.”
He smiled; pressed his lips to her forehead and nodded. “Probably not, but can’t help it,” he shrugged. “M’sorry.”
“I would probably tear a girl’s eyes out if she even looked at you.”
Harry laughed loudly. “I would never make y’jealous, kitten. Ever. But I would love t’see that.”
*
It was going to be a spring wedding. Spring in the loosest sense of the word. It was going to be on the first day of spring but there was no way of knowing if it would be a warm spring day or a holdover of a cold winter day.
It didn’t bother her much planning most of it. Everyone in her life told her a thousand different things that made her anxious and sick of hearing the difference of opinions when the only opinion she cared about was Harry’s.
“I want to show you my dress so bad,” she told him while they snuggled on the couch watching a movie.
He smiled. “I can’t wait t’see it, kitten. Gonna look like an angel,” he kissed the top of her head.
She buried her face into his side. “I don’t know about angel,”
He chuckled. “Course y’will, love. Y’look like an angel every day,” he reminded her.
She laughed, muffled by his ribcage. If she had the ability to tell her younger self she would one day be engaged to Harry Styles she didn’t think there was a world in which she would have believed it. But right beside him, calling her an angel. It seemed like the surest thing to ever bet on.
*
“Mom,” she sighed rubbing her forehead. Harry was walking in the door, a box of cupcakes for tasting. He picked them up after a long day of work. She could see the exhaustion on his face. There were dark circles under his eyes and his hair had that look that he ran his hand through it too many times.
On the table was a giant poster board filled with sticky notes that was supposed to keep them organized in planning but felt like a full-time job some nights.
Her mom was talking in her ear about how her uncle wanted to bring his new girlfriend despite the fact his ex-wife was going to be there, and they did not get along. “Mom, it’s my wedding!” She was practically bubbling with tears. Harry rushed over, missing the counter as he put the box down, which left the cupcakes smeared on the floor in the process. Harry looked at the box like it was the box’s fault but feeling shame that it was his own doing.
Her jaw dropped in shock, unable to believe the chaos that seemed to creep in every moment the closer it got to the wedding. It was only four months away and they had already been planning for so long. While she looked at the ruined cupcakes, she listened to her mom try to reason with her that it was what you were supposed to do at a wedding. They could rearrange everyone when the time came so that everyone was happy.
“Mom, I have to call you back,” she mumbled and hung up without another word. Poor exhausted Harry looked at the cupcakes.
“Fuck, m’sorry, kitten,” he frowned. “I thought y’were going t’cry and I just wanted t’make sure y’didn’t...I can call and ask for another dozen and go get them right now—”
“Can we get married this weekend?” She looked at him nervously. “Please?” She whispered.
His voice felt broken. They had been planning for nearly a year. A wedding that they were grateful to afford because so many could not have the elaborate wedding they were planning. One that had everything they wanted. But even in their own planning, it was their wedding and yet it was still dissolving into anxiety and madness. It was supposed to be in front of all their friends and family. “But what ‘bout—”
“We can do that one too, but I’m going crazy. You’re going crazy,” her voice cracked. “I just want to be your wife. I don’t care about any of this anymore,” she whispered.
“Kitten,” he cooed.
“I know I’m crazy but if one more person asks if they can bring their child after I specifically said no children I’m going to scream,” she sniffled.
“Baby,” he frowned. “Please don’t cry,” he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead. “I know s’overwhelming but I want you t’have—”
“Then please marry me. This weekend,” she repeated into his shirt.
“How on earth could I say no to you?” He asked rhetorically.
*
Angelic was insulting compared to how beautiful she looked. In fact, there wasn’t a word to describe how perfect that dress looked on her. It literally stole Harry’s breath away. “Breathe,” Louis muttered to him as she entered. His voice felt frozen, and he wondered how on earth he was going to get through vows.
Louis was the only person they told. He closed the office down for the night. Told everyone that planned on working on a Saturday evening that they couldn’t. Something about buffing the floors or tenting for fumigation. But really, Louis was going to marry them as a recently registered online-ordained clerk. They were getting married in Harry’s office because that’s where she told Harry she loved him for the first time. She walked the short distance from the door to where Louis and Harry had moved his desk to the side so they could get married in the setting sunlight. There were a few bouquets of flowers that Harry thought would match the theme of their other wedding in a couple short months.
She held a similar bouquet in her hands. Harry thought she looked like an ancient goddess of sunlight and flowers. Her dress was A-line in structure. A plunging neckline with intricate floral lace on the bodice without any sparkle. The floral lace faded into the flowy skirt and against the setting sun, she looked golden against the pure white dress. She was the most precious thing he had ever seen. She was completely right; he was desperate to see her in this dress. Waiting another few months would have been sinful.
“Hi,” Harry smiled as she stood in front of him.
“Hi,” she giggled. “It doesn’t fit right because it still needs to be altered,” she told him and showed off the back that had a similar plunging neckline but against her back. “I stole all our chip clips,” she smiled excitedly. Harry laughed and shaking his head at her and her adorable antics. “And I won’t have my hair like this.”
Harry hadn’t even noticed that she had her hair down naturally as she always wore it. Her makeup was the same as he saw it each day. Yet somehow it was even more beautiful. “I think y’should,” he murmured.
“Oh?” She smiled. Nodding he scanned her up and down unable to believe she was all his. In a few moments she would be his wife for the rest of their lives and beyond. “You look perfect,” she assured him. Harry always looked handsome. He had plenty of suits due to his job, but there was one he had gotten shortly after getting engaged. He never told her but as she scanned the suit, it fit better than all his other ones, it seemed she realized he got a new one just for this day. Like it was made to be on him and look so perfect on him for this moment.
“Are you ready?” Louis asked quietly. It was their evening, and he didn’t want to spoil it or rush it. But Louis also knew that Harry would spend hours ogling her if he let him.
They both nodded eagerly.
Louis went through the basics, the things that were said at every wedding but they were staring at each other, Harry holding her left hand in both of his while her other hand held her bouquet. “Do you want to do your vows now?” Louis asked.
“I forgot mine,” she admitted.
He shrugged. “They don’t have to be the ones we wrote,” he offered.
She took a deep breath. “Okay, Louis, I’m sorry,” she smiled. He winked at her and she turned her gaze back to Harry. “They’re not going to make any sense if I say them off the top of my head,” she warned.
“S’okay,” he assured her. “M’gonna love you no matter what.”
With another deep breath she started. “I’ve been so lucky to know you since we were kids. Thinking back on it, I’m sure I’ve loved you since we were in college. Having our lives intertwined so obviously seems like fate, in hindsight. But I wouldn’t trade a day of our relationship and every path and twist and hiccup it led us to for anything. There are days where I truly don’t want to do anything but be your wife and just...bask in how perfect it is. I lose all sense of identity and it’s not a bad thing. I am so in love with you it makes me,” she sighed, shaking her head, keeping her gaze on his green eyes that looked golden in the sunlight. “I am so happy to marry you. It might be the best thing I’ve ever done. You make me a better person, you make me happy, you make me feel safe,” she blinked away briefly and laughed. “I didn’t...” she sniffled as she thought of the night that Harry was there to save her and kickstart their romantic relationship. Despite how scared she was at the time; she would be forever grateful for Harry finding her and keeping her safe. Always. “Oops,” she swiped at her cheek and Harry chuckled.
“S’okay,” he promised. She sniffled again, a tear rolling down her cheek.
“I think if I admitted it to myself, I always had a crush on you. Ever since we were young,” he reached for that tear and wiped it away. “You make sure I have medicine when I don’t feel well, and you always make sure I eat. You dance with me in the kitchen, and you don’t mind that I’ve been in pajamas for two days on the weekend. You make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world,” she paused briefly and squeezed his hand like it was part of the promise she was whispering to him (and Louis). “I’m going to have a crush on you for the rest of our lives and I’m so happy we’re here and I love you very much. I always will. And I will always do everything I can to make you happy.”
Louis looked at Harry pointedly. “I can’t wait to hear what she has to say when she has prep time,” Louis smirked.
Harry rolled his eyes as she giggled, which just made his heart feel warmer than he ever thought possible.
He squeezed her hand. “I feel like I’ve said m’vows a hundred times t’you now. When I told you I loved you for the first time, right here. Then when I proposed. M’going to love you with everything in me. Every single day. M’gonna love you more every day. Somehow. I’ll figure it out, I promise,” he smirked making her giggle. “You mean everything t’me,” he promised. “I don’t care ‘bout money, houses, billable hours, or contracts. The second I think of you, it all goes away. You are my entire world. You make me so happy. Even when I don’t want t’be happy. Y’work tremendously hard t’make our lives easier and happier. T’make me happier. No one has ever done that for me before,” he explained. “I admire you more than anyone on this earth,” her eyes welled with tears again.
“M’going to love you and cherish you and take care of you for as long as we live and then wherever this afterlife takes us,” it truly sounded like a vow. “I want this to be the last time you cry, but seems a bit unrealistic,” he chuckled and wiped at her tears again as she giggled tearily through the words. “M'never going t’be responsible for your sadness, kitten. I promise. M’always going t’be responsible for making y’happy. When y’need me, m’going t’be there. Always. I love you more and more every second and I wish I figured it out sooner than I did,” the only nod to the rough start they had in ages. “But m’glad I figured it out now. Glad I get t’see you in this beautiful dress and hear y’tell me that m’worth it,” he whispered.
“You are,” she mouthed unable to speak.
“I love you,” he repeated. “Forever, and ever.”
Louis cleared his throat awkwardly and shook his head. “Didn’t know you could do that,” he muttered and pinched at the corner of his eyes. She laughed tearily, still but Harry couldn’t help but smile. Louis spoke again, more logistics and legalities. Terms and conditions the pair of them were used to hearing.
Harry was certain he said “I do, I do, I do,” about a hundred times when Louis asked making him and his beautiful girl laugh again.
“And do you take Harry Styles to be your husband?” Louis asked.
Her eyebrows pinched together as she looked at the most perfect man she had ever met. She tilted her head at him. “Are you holding your breath?” She whispered.
“Please say ‘I do,’” he mumbled but he was definitely holding his breath.
She giggled. “I do,” she rolled her eyes. “You idiot.”
“Thank you,” he sighed with relief.
Louis snorted. “Just kiss her already,” he chuckled.
Harry dipped her as if they were dancing in the kitchen at home. His hand unclipping one of the chip clips holding her dress in place. She giggled as his lips sealed over hers. “Congratulations, Mrs. Styles,” he murmured against her mouth when he pulled away slightly.
Louis chuckled, grabbing the clip, and heading for the door to sign the marriage certificate.
She kissed him again, the flowers falling to the floor, and she held his face in both her hands. “I love you, Mr. Styles,” she smiled. She looked so beautiful; it made Harry’s heart ache.
“This was an amazing idea, kitten,” he told her standing her upright, and kissing her again.
“I have those every now and then,” she tucked her face into his chest. Another clip fell off her back.
He laughed and kissed her forehead. “Better get y’home so y’don’t flash Louis on our way out,” he suggested.
She smiled. Well...I actually brought a change of clothes,” she assured him. “And I may have told Louis to leave the floor locked and leave,” she bit the inside of her lip.
Harry felt warm all over. “Oh?” One of his eyebrows quirked up. His expression hooded as he looked her over.
“I think you got a good view of my dress for now, right? You can wait till spring?” She asked, pulling the last two bag clips off the back of her dress. Without them holding it in place, it draped differently on her body making it fall haphazardly around her torso, dangerously close to revealing some of Harry's favorite physical features of hers.
“I’d like to view it on the floor,” his voice was low and hungry in tone as he scanned her.
She smiled. Turning around, she showed off her zipper. "Unzip me."

Quiet
a/n: idk something with no plot, just vibes. only like 650 words. also i'm getting a bit bored of using "you" so i thought i would mix it up.
Tumblr media
‘You’ve been so quiet tonight,’ he points out as he nestles himself right next to her on the sofa.
It’s big and cosy, perfectly adequate enough to fit three people if not more. Yet his determination to sit as close to her as possible never fails to bring a smile to her face; thighs pressed together and fingers intertwined. Touching. Always touching.
‘Have I?’
Her voice is soft and contemplative, still half-lost in thought. He might have a point there, maybe she has been quiet because she feels a bit lost in her head.
‘Hmm,’ a pause as he traces one finger on the inside of her wrist. It tickles, makes her squirm slightly. ‘Penny for your thoughts?’
She lets him continue the finger trace-tickling for ten more seconds before she leans her head on his shoulder. Her head fits perfectly, at least that much is never different.
‘You think we shouldn’t have gone public so soon?’ she picks up a piece of fluff off his joggers just to occupy her hands otherwise, ‘with us I mean.’
‘Do you regret it?’
That’s what he always does. Answers a question with another question. But she does consider it for a few moments.
‘No, I won’t say I regret it. That’s not the right word.’ He watches her roll the piece of fluff between her fingers, stabbing it with her thumbnail, picking it up again when it falls.
‘Dismayed? Unhappy? Guilty?’ he supplies playfully, ‘...rueful?’
At that, she rolls her eyes and cracks a smile. ‘That was not the word I was ever going to use!’ and then she goes back to muttering about how she’s in love with the human form of a thesaurus.
He cracks a smile of his own and softly holds her chin to make her look at him. ‘So then what word would you use?’
She looks at her lap and shrugs, ‘I would say I feel…nervous about it.’
‘Nervous?’
‘Yeah, you know. Tense, nervy, jumpy…trepidatious,’ she grins cheekily.
‘Okay, smartarse,’ he huffs, ‘but tell me. Why nervous?’
‘I don’t know, have you seen photos of us together? Photos taken by just random people on the street,’ she gesticulates wildly to make her point. ‘I know you’re used to it but I am not. I don’t think I will ever be.’
She stays silent, breathing just a bit heavier than before but he lets the silence remain. Because he knows there’s more coming.
‘There’s this one photo,’ she says, ‘you look gorgeous. Like always. So cool and suave and like a rockstar. And I look like I’ve never smiled a day in my life.’
‘I’m sure you don’t look like that!’ and then a bit lower and teasing, ‘you think I look gorgeous, cool and suave?’
‘So not the point right now!’ she whines, ‘besides, you haven’t even seen the photo.’
‘Go on then.’
It takes her a second to find the photo. He doesn’t fail to notice that she has it saved on her phone and he makes a mental note of giving her a proper talk about not letting internet photos get to you.
‘Here,’ she shoves the phone into his waiting hands, ‘I look like a miserable egg!’
‘You do not look like a miserable egg!’ he tries to sound indignant but cracks up at the last second at the mental image. And backs away when she glares at him. ‘Okay okay! I still disagree but even if you did, you would be my miserable egg.’
‘Stop trying to be cute, Matthew,’ she scolds, ‘look at me, I look like a grump!’
‘You do not look like a grump!’ His voice is full of exasperation and his hands almost thrown up in the air. Full of so much certainty that she raises an eyebrow.
‘Oh yeah?’ she challenges, ‘so then what do I look like?’
‘You…’ he lowers his mouth to hers, just hovering, only just touching, ‘you look like my person.’

Its a Game pt.6
Tumblr media
[ A/n ] - Hey everyone here is part 6 i had to cut it a bit short so i could get to the good bits in part 7 that i am currently writing and i also started another multy part story that i think y'all will like!
[ Pairing ] - Harry Styles x Reader!, Dylan O'Brien x Reader!
[ Genre ] -  angst
[ Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 , Part 4 , Part 5 ]
[ Masterlist ]
Harry drove home from seeing you with a million thoughts swimming in his head. Why did he say he loved you? That was fucking stupid. I mean, it is true. He did love you but obviously it was the wrong time. Had he really taken so long to realize your intentions were greater than you let on? He really should have thought about that more. These sequences of events were a product of not needing to think when he was with you. Not seeing you for months then having an awkward encounter with you and then weeks later he pulls up to see you in a parking garage and says he loves you. I mean what the fuck. Who does that? Harry apparently does that now. Gone are his days of confident mystery. Perhaps he should learn to think when he’s near you. To be independent of you. Despite this, he’s regretting the timing of his impulses and now you know he loves you and you still will go home to another man. How was he supposed to process this and now having to see you at the festival? Rehearsal after rehearsal and then a whole weekend of you. Perfect you.
The thoughts consumed his mind the whole drive back to his LA home. The car pulled into his driveway, and he shut the door as he fished for the key to his house in his bag. The welcoming smells of laundry and cleaning products filled his nose with a scrunch. He needed to sort himself out. He used to come home to his NY apartment and smell you. Your vanilla and cinnamon scented perfume. Like cookies fresh out of the oven. Warm and truly inviting the opposite of the chemicals and detergent stinging his nose currently.
The days before the start of rehearsal seemed to drag on. Meeting after meeting and workout sessions in between for both harry and yourself. In total it had been about a week since you asked him to meet you at the garage. Dylan still didn’t know, and you still couldn’t get Harry’s declaration off your mind.
***
“And then he stood there with that fucking smirk of his and was like ‘I Lov youu’ I mean who says that after you just told them why you needed space in the first place.” You punctuated your sentence with a hard smack to a punching bag. You never would have caught yourself in the gym before all this Coachella nonsense. Yes, you were grateful blah blah blah, but this was some serious stuff. Asara joined you on occasion and this was one of those times. Blass your personal trainer he’s heard a ton of drama fall from your lips. Asara grinned and held back a laugh at your impression of the man. The two of you hit the bags in tandem as the conversation continued.
“I think he just misses you. You were on and off for so long you know.” Asara spoke between the sounds of fist hitting bags. You sighed and rolled your eyes.
“Yeah, he missed me while he was fucking another woman high off coke.” You punched the bag and Asara chuckled.
“Y/n he tried to tie you down several times, and I remember you always ran away every time he tried. Now, that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have used his words, but the man did try. And don’t act like you don’t partake.” Asara stood off to the side as she finished her set.
“That’s not what I mean. He just gets carried away and I don’t mind taking care of him after he’s faded but it’s not healthy to do it that much. And as for trying to tie me down… I was completely loyal to him, and he knew that. I want to be shown off and he wants to be secretive and private.” You paused for a second to remove your boxing gloves. “We never saw eye to eye, but I love him too.”
“Right and now that you can both agree on something what are you going to do about Dylan?” Asara made a good point, and you weren’t sure how to break the news.

“Do you think I’m ready for this?” You looked up at Dylan with fear in your eyes. It was starkly different than any look he has seen on your face before. He always knew what to say but this time he just sort of looked at you. You looked to him for something. Anything would have been fine just anything to let you know that he could level with you in this moment. You were searching, reaching for anything in the deep recesses of his eyes and you couldn’t find anything.
His lips turned into a smile, and he pulled you in close. For Dylan in this moment, he was so proud of you that words weren’t enough. You allowed yourself to be pulled to the hug, but your arms stayed at your side. It was eerily frustrating for you. Being spoon fed the idea that he wanted to give you what you deserved, and you deserved more you needed more. You needed what Harry could give you. Out of the corner of your eye you could see him speaking with his production team and you glanced between the two men. When your eyes settled back on Dylan, you knew you needed him to leave. The two of you stood backstage at a mock rehearsal for the night you were to perform on stage at Coachella. Voices and the sounds of metal scraping against each other while the sun beat down on the field. Dylan decided to join you for moral support, but you felt so separated from him. It was like he did understand what you needed in that moment to help you feel better. You stared at the wall and your mind went blank. This had to stop.
Harry stood off to the side with his team. Each of them primping him and measuring fabric for the show. He did a good job at staying impartial when Dylan was around. For the few times they ended up in the same room or when he saw a photo of him on his Instagram feed because you posted him, or he just happened to be in the photo. You didn’t fully warm up to him just yet and Harry knew you didn’t forgive him yet. In his mind he decided he needed to be on his best behavior to win you back and gain your trust. Harry couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t snooping, he definitely was. And he could tell Dylan was doing a shit job at comforting you. The guy looked nervous enough for both of you.
“Um I gotta go Dylan.” You spoke softly and pulled away from him after he placed a kiss to the top of your head. You looked disappointed if harry could even say that. Dylan seemed to take the hint and disappeared off to sit with your friends. The dress rehearsal was dragging on for everyone so harry could imaging you felt stuck right now. Nervous and unsure who to talk to. Having a solution come to mind he made his way over to you. At first you didn’t notice. You were marking beats and paces in your head like he does, and it made him smile to think about you valuing his creative process.
Harry decided you needed space and he leaned onto his team as they finished the preparations. He would be back in two nights to perform, and you would be joining him on stage. His nerves caught up to him and he was glad you were off with your people so he couldn’t make a fool of himself again. You looked good though even in your comfortable clothes to practice. Your hips hit every marked beat and he almost got lost watching you.
The next day of rehearsal went by fast, and you were up late again practicing for the show. Beat after beat and step after step, you went over it in your head until it was time to gather backstage. You arrived at the venue the next day in a pink dress. A car service picked you up and your team met up with you. Flashes of light and screams cold been seen a mile away from the stage. Harry was prepped and ready to descend upon the crowd. You stood off to the side and took deep breaths. Harry saw you from the corner of his eye and looked over. You looked so scared. So different from how he was used to seeing you. You looked so vulnerable.
“You’re going to be great darling.” His voice carried a low register that caught your attention through your in-ears. He had walked over to comfort you. The glitter on his outfit fell to the ground like snowflakes and you stared at the glistening specks. For some reason, the closer he got to you the slower your heart began to beat.
“Give me your hands.” His voice was firm but soft as to not call attention to you. You listen despite all that has happened and how much you wanted to walk away and be alone. Your hands fit into his so perfectly. Harry held onto you gently and rubbed his thumbs onto your palms. Your breathing was shallow, but you stayed in that spot not daring move your sight from the floor.
“Look at me darling.” That pet name would haunt you if this ended up anymore tragically. Harry caught your eye, and you stared right back at him. His eyes didn’t give anything away that he didn’t want them to, and you just stood there looking into his eyes for a few minutes. You wanted to cry. Dylan could have never comforted you like this. All these months and weeks replayed over and over in your mind as you held hands with Harry.
“Just look for me if you feel nervous out there, okay? Focus on me.” Harry let go of your hands and walked up the stairs. You closed your eyes, and you could hear the excitement in the crowd build. The screams got louder and louder as the music began to play and he walked out. Secretly your heart was doing flips. Warmth flushed your face, and you gave Harry a small smile. He brushed his thumb against your face and turned to walk on stage. You stood back and looked at the crowd as he started to perform. The opening notes of adore you began to play, and the audience went crazy.
Three songs and then you heard your cue. Walking closer and closer to the stage you heard your song begin to play through the speakers and the beat matched up with your heart.

Y/nnnfann0 bae looking so fucking good
Harrystyleshq loved having you
Harryfan96 Harry gets to have that any time he wants and I’m jealous
You put your phone down after looking back at the post. A notification flashed at the top that Dylan had posted and for some reason you wanted to keep him out of your mind. Now Harry isn’t stupid, and he especially isn’t stupid when he’s sober. He saw how fast you ignored the notification. He didn’t quite see who it was from when you put your phone down so fast, but he guessed it was from Dylan. He would be lying if he said it didn’t amuse him but the idea that you still gave an ounce of energy to that man made him feel detached from reality. The room was cold like he asked for it to be, but his neck felt hot. The veins in his arms bulged for a second and then before he could succumb to the jealousy you started speaking.
“Thank you.” You sounded so meek and shy. Fixing yourself like a teenager on a first date. Is this what he’s done to you? His darling used to be a spitfire. Real sassy and sickeningly sweet with her attitude. “Thank you.” If this were almost a year ago, he would have you pinned to a wall already. Fuck your “thank you” He needed that feeling back in full force. This simmering tension was frustrating. Was he just supposed to stay away from you? He knew you wanted him back. You didn’t have to say it, that’s what this whole game was about. Harry has studied you and the way you act the only thing that made this different the other times you’ve played cat and mouse with him is that you found a new toy to fuck around with. “You look fucking amazing.” Harry sighed and shifted on the sofa the pair of you were sitting on. He wasn’t lying the skirt you were wearing was low cut and your waist was twisted and curved like when he used to hit it from behind. He should probably stop but who wouldn’t think about you like that?
You noticed that Harry was staring. Staring in your eyes studying you. Staring at your clothes or lacking thereof. Staring at your lips imagining God knows what and you stared right back. It was almost like how you see in the movies. You moved in slow motion as you scooted closer to him on the seat. Your legs crossed and your hands were cradling your phone. Harry sat opposite of you with his legs spread comfortably. His arms were lying over the back of the sofa. The two of you were sure there were more glamorous couches to be lounging on, but the accommodation wasn’t of concern when your lips met for the first time in months. Something about the kiss was electric. Your phone fell to the floor as harry pulled you closer. The position was awkward with your arm trapped between his body and yours. Your legs remained crossed until Harry’s hand gripped the skin of your exposed thigh. His firm palms and fingertips massaged the muscles you had been using to dance all night. Neither of you broke for air until your phone began to ring from the floor.
Harry leaned forward and picked up the device first. His mood dampened as he saw the name flash across the screen. In a split second it crossed Harry’s mind to decline the call on your behalf. All it would take is one swipe of a finger, one press of a button. He would have his lips back on yours in a second. You sat across from him looking expectantly with wide innocent eyes. Such a loud juxtaposition from the smudged lipstick smeared across your plush mouth. And all the nasty things he knew you could do and say with it. You were so beautiful and the second you answered the call you wouldn’t be his anymore.

Till next time | pt.1
Tumblr media
Pairing: Edmund Pevensie x fem!reader
Summary: Prince Caspian and his maid escaped from his uncles castle. After reuniting with the Narnians and unexpected visitors, Y/N learns how to sword fight, how to be tough and how to love.
Warnings: spoilers if you haven’t watched/read Prince Caspian, cursing
Genre: angst, fluff, rom-com
Word count: 4,6k
A.N.: I am a Peter girly but… when you have three Narnia one shots written and two of them are Edmund related, do you actually deserve that title? Anyways, I changed Edmund’s age a little bit because it is a fan fiction and I can and because it’s gonna be a thing in the second part. Yes, a second part. I planned this as one only but it seems too long and rushed and doesn’t make a lot of sense to keep it in one part, so yeah enjoy!
Masterlist | pt.2: coming soon
________________________________________________________
“A son! A son! Lady Prunaprismia has this night given Lord Miraz a son!” The mans voice echoed behind Prince Caspian and his maid Y/N. They had just exchanged their last words with Cornelius, Caspians teacher, before riding out of the castle. With a concerned look he stops his horse, Prince Caspian moves his head to the right, looking at her. She just puts a hand on his shoulder and gives him a reassuring smile, even if she was scared to the bones herself. He sighs deeply and nudges Destriers side for him to run off again. While being followed by Miraz’s men, Y/N was holding on to Caspian while looking back terrified.
Prince Caspian rode both of them into the woods until Destrier kicked off his back. Them on the ground now, they immediately started to get surrounded by two dwarfs, names Trumpkin and Nikabrik and a badger, Trufflehunter. Trumpkin would be taken in by the Telmarines while Caspian would blow Queen Susans old horn, given to him by Cornelius. Later they were both sleeping in the little home of the badger and the black dwarf, which was in fact, the inside of a tree.
Y/N already sat awake at the dining table with Trufflehunter and Nikabrik, all three waiting for Prince Caspian to wake up. She was a lovely girl, always smiling and always kind. She had a lot of things to be thankful for and although a lot of those things have now been taken away from her, she was still with Caspian and that was all she needed.
“This bread is so stale.” Said Nikabrik while tearing the bread into two halves, not giving the other half to Y/N. He didn’t like Y/N, it was nothing personal, she was one of them and that was reason enough.
“I’ll just give him some soup. He should be coming around soon.” Said a different voice, Trufflehunter. While the young prince had already woken up and was now silently walking in the direction the voices were coming from, was the badger giving Y/N some soup already. She nodded her head smiling and said, “thank you very much.”
“I don’t think I hit him hard enough,” replied Nikabrik and Y/N swallowed hastily, “I think that you shouldn’t talk so foul of the Prince while he is sleeping just in the same room as you are! Especially not in front of me!” She didn’t say it mean, arrogant or threatening.
“That is right and besides that, he is just a boy!” Replied Trufflehunter.
“He’s a Telmarine, not some lost puppy. You said you were gonna get rid of him.” Y/N, who had also just woken up a few minutes ago too, choked on her soup as she heard Nikabrik say that.
The badger looked softly at Y/N and then roughly back at Nikabrik, “No. I said I’d take care of him. We can’t kill him now. I just bandaged his head. It would be like murdering a guest!”
“How do you think his friends are treating their guest?” Nikabrik said while looking disgusted at Y/N.
“Trumpkin knew what he was doing, it’s not the boys fault or hers.” Just before Y/N could speak for herself, Prince Caspian jumped into the main ‘room’ grabbing one of the pokers by the fire and started to fight against Nikabrik.
“Hold it. No, no!” Yelled Trufflehunter.
“Your highness! They are Narnians, they are just trying to help!” Y/N said urgently, quickly getting up and extending her hands to calm Caspian down.
Both stopped fighting and Caspian looked at her with wide eyes. Nikabrik just scoffed and put his sword back. Y/N walked over to Caspian and he looked at her intensely waiting for a more in depth explanation. “Prince Caspian, this is Trufflehunter and this is Nikabrik. They helped us escape from your lord father’s soldiers, one was caught… but he will be alright, right?” She said looking around for an answer. “Right.” Said Trufflehunter who was now cleaning up the soup that was so sadly spilled all over the floor.
“Wait, hold on. Am I hearing this right? Prince? That disgusting piece of a man is your father then?” Said Nikabrik jumping up again holding out his sword but Prince Caspian defended himself immediately, “my uncle! And… he wants me dead.” Said Caspian now sadder than ever, having now realized in what kind of situation he really is.
Not shortly after, Prince Caspian and Y/N went out into the woods again looking for… well they didn’t really know themselves, more Narnians? In the hope for them to follow Caspian? To defeat Miraz?
“My lord!” Y/N yelled after Caspian while she was panting, hitting rocks and punching branches out of her way. “My lord please wait! I am not that fast, wearing a dress in the woods is not easy!” She said hopelessly but also slightly laughing at herself. Prince Caspian turns around and quickly runs up to her, helping her walking further extending an arm for her to hold on to it. Almost like he was her servant not the other way around.
“I really hope it’s gonna work.” Caspian said after a while, still walking close to his only friend. “My lord?” She looked at him questioning. Y/N, who unfortunately did not have the privilege of receiving the same education as the prince was visibly confused, she had no idea what he meant. “The horn Cornelius gave me. It’s supposed to help us, bring the four kings and queens back or… even Aslan.” Y/N only gasped at that and shook her head in disbelieve. She sincerely hoped that it was true but it seemed to far fetched to be real.
While they continued walking, they eventually noticed they were being followed by none other than Trufflehunter and Nikabrik. They later met Reepicheep, the bravest one foot tall mouse you’ll ever see in your living days. Soon they would talk to all the old Narnians and unite forces to fight against Miraz.
This time walking in the woods, Y/N found herself not only surrounded by Trufflehunter, Nikabrik and Prince Caspian. This time there were hundreds of other creatures with them and oddly enough, she had never felt safer in her life, in all those years in the castle than she did right now with bulls who could speak the same language as she did.
They continued walking until Caspian heard some footsteps, he extended an arm to symbolize for the others to stop and wait while he walked further, just a few seconds later Y/N heard blades hitting against each other. Metal on metal, Caspian was fighting and he was fighting someone skilled.
Y/N started running with the others, eager to help their hopefully soon to be king. When Y/N arrived in the heart of the forest, the weirdest thing happened. She saw four people she’d never seen before but one caught her eye specifically. The boy with the blue cloth and dark hair, he stood beside two girls, one seemingly younger and the other one older than him. Edmund the Just, she thought. Now having talked and laughed with the other creatures nights before, she now knew a lot more about the legends of old and she immediately saw. She kept starring at him until he eventually realized someone was watching him, their eyes met and he just looked at her. His gaze was hard to describe, he looked at her interested, fascinated even.
After first complications they followed Prince Caspian to Aslans Tomb. Days and days of planning and fighting followed, them getting into the castle, Caspian having a mental break down because of his father, High King Peter being helpless for losing so many soldiers and friends, things didn’t look too well and Y/N hated herself that she couldn’t do anything to help.
She was just on the edge of the forest collecting mushrooms and different kinds of herbs. She was so busy aggressively pulling out random weeds at this point that she didn’t even hear footsteps appearing behind her.
“You don’t look very happy.” A male voice said and without turning around, checking who it might have been she just answered.
“No. I. Am. Great,” she huffed pulling more and more after each word.
“Are you sure? Because you are killing the meadow…” The male voice replied and something happened Y/N really didn’t intend to happen. She pushed all her rage and anger at the poor man who was trying to comfort her.
“Listen, why don’t you just leave me alone and play swords like the other wanna be soldiers? I am sick and tired of you men trying to control everyone just because you are men! Your decisions have brought us nothing but misery and just because I am a woman doesn’t mean I am weak or less smart than any of you! So how about you fuck. Off!” She said while standing up and angrily turning around in the last part.
Her heart, soul and brain died at this exact moment at this exact spot.
In front of her stood King Edmund, the handsome young man she had liked since the day they met. They had not really spoken to each other yet so she couldn’t have known it was him. She clasped her mouth with both her hands while her eyes almost fell out. She didn’t know what to say and she hoped if she just stood still long enough, she would turn invisible and he’d leave.
That did in fact not happen.
Edmund stood there eyes almost as wide as hers. If you had talked to Edmund that way five years ago he would have yelled at you and made you hate yourself and your life, if you had talked to Edmund that way five years ago and you were a guy he would have probably thrown a punch at you right here right now.
But, judging by the fact that right now is not two years ago and that the person in front of him was not a random guy but a very beautiful, hardworking and usually lovely girl that he very much liked, he just nodded and said, “right, sorry to bother you.” With that he walked away. Well, until Y/N reached for his arm, not because she had anything to say, it was more of a reflex. He looked down his arm and then turned a little to look at her. She just looked at him like a fish who didn’t have enough water.
“I- I- I- I- I AM SO SORRY, I DIDN’T MEAN TO SAY ANY OF THAT. I MEAN I DID MEAN TO SAY ALL OF IT ACTUALLY BUT NOT TO YOU KING EDMUND I AM SO SORRY. I STEPPED OUT OF LINE WAY TO MUCH, EXECUTE ME, PUNISH ME, DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH ME I DESERVE IT. BANISHED? DONE I’LL PACK MY THINGS RIGHT AWAY. I’LL PULL THE ROPE AROUND MY OWN THROAT UNLESS YOU’D LIKE TO DO IT YOURSELF OF COURSE. I AM SO SORRY KING EDMUND PLEASE DON’T HATE ME.”
With every word she slid down more and more being on her knees and then holding on to Edmunds legs while crying bitterly. She didn’t even stop there but I’ll spare you the rest. Edmund just looked at her with wide eyes but he caught himself pretty quickly.
While she was still mumbling apologies and ways how he could kill her or probably send her to hell, he just grabbed her shoulders and pulled her up so she was standing in front of him. He smiled at her but didn’t let go of her shoulders. “Y/N, right?” He asked softly and she nodded while wiping away her many, many tears. “Good. Listen to me, I will not kill, banish or punish you in ANY way. We are ALL on edge and I forgive you.” He said very slowly and clearly so she would understand.
She nodded, “so the guillotine? I’ll get it.” She started to walk in whatever direction because to be completely honest with you, they didn’t have a guillotine.
“No no no no, no, not the guillotine.” He said reaching after her. “NO. KILLING. Understood?” He tried explaining again. Y/N looked confused at him with her tears building up again, “but I said- I said-” “Yes, I know what you said. But it doesn't matter, it is alright okay? Don’t worry about it. We all make mistakes,” then he looked a little hurt, like he remembered something from his past, “and we deserve a second chance as long as we acknowledge that mistake. Okay?”
Y/N nodded. “Good. Would it be okay for you if you took your basket and helped cooking for dinner? I have to practice with the others and some of those mushrooms look delicious.” He said smiling and with that Y/N completely snapped out of it. “Mushrooms, dinner, food, of course! Would I be okay?! That is my job! Sword practice of course how could I be so stupid, pardon me King Edmund. I should really go, cook and stuff like that.” She grabbed her basket and basically ran away from him, he just looked after her smiling to himself.
Later after dinner, Y/N sat further away from the bonfire holding herself comforting, thinking about today. Caspian walked over to her and sat down beside her, she didn’t even greet him, that’s how bad she was feeling.
“So… you’d like to yell at me too or is that a thing between you and King Edmund?” He said laughing while drinking some wine and she looked at him shocked. “How did you? Did he tell you-” “I haven’t really spoken to him but, you were crying and yelling in the middle of our base, basically. You think no one heard?” He said with one eyebrow lifted and Y/N just let her head fall into her hands. “I am an idiot and I suck.”
Caspian just nodded, “yes, do I want to know what happened?” With her head still hiding in her hands she just shook her head and Prince Caspian let it go.
The next day was horrible. Y/N was too embarrassed to look at anyone so she left early into the woods, or so she planned. On the way outside she heard Prince Caspian yelling after her, “Y/N! Y/N! Hold up!” She sighed sadly and turned around with a trained smile. “My lord?” “Yeah yeah, I have a little quest for you, nothing major. High King Peter will duel my uncle but someone has to bring him the message. … will do it, being accompanied by a giant, a centaurs and you.” He said kind of mumbling the first person.
“A giant, a centaurs and what will go with us?” She asked stretching her neck a little so she would understand better.
“ing Edmns…” he said mumbling again.
“Sorry, what?” She asked again walking even closer to Prince Caspian. “King Edmund.” He said hiding his smile, of course it was King Edmund.
---
“I, Peter, by the gift of Aslan, by election and by conquest, High King of Narnia, Lord of Cair Paravel and emperor of the Lone Islands, in order to prevent the abominable effusion of blood, do hereby challenge the usurper Miraz to single combat upon the field of battle. The fight shall be to the death. The reward shall be total surrender.” King Edmund read all of this off his scroll in front of Miraz and the other lords. Y/N stood a little in the back not too far from Lord Glozelle. While Edmund rolled his scroll back up, Miraz started talking.
“Tell me, Prince Edmund…”
“King.” Edmund interrupted and Y/N smirked at his remark.
“Pardon me?” Lord Miraz asked with a startled look on his face.
Edmund looked up from his scroll, “it’s ‘King Edmund,’ actually. Just ‘King,’ though. Peter’s the High King. I know, it’s confusing.”
Lord Miraz and Lord Sopespian looked at each other puzzled.
“Why, would we risk such a proposal when our armies could wipe you out by nightfall?” Miraz asked.
Edmund looked at the lords as he studied their faces, “haven’t you already underestimated our numbers? I mean, only a week ago Narnians were extinct.”
“And so you will be again.”
“Well then you should have little to fear.”
At that Miraz laughed out loud. “This is not a question of bravery.”
“So you’re bravely refusing to fight a swordsman half your age?”
Y/N turned around so her wide smile wouldn’t show. Lord Mirazs smile on the other hand faded instantly as he leaned forwards in his chair. “I didn’t say I refused.”
With a lot of talk and arguing, it was decided that they would fight each other. On their way back, the giant and centaurs in the back and Edmund and Y/N in the front, they started talking. “First of all I want to deeply apologies again for how I behaved the other day King Edmund I shouldn’t have-” but before she could finish her sentence he held out a hand and shook his head smiling. She smiled back and started a new topic, “I just wanted to say, the way you talked to these lords was incredible. I have never seen such courage before especially at your age, although I probably shouldn’t say that.” “My age?” He looked at her amused and she blushed a little, “you know, judging you are like… 15?” At that Edmund laughed out loud and she looked at him confused. “Did I say something funny?” Edmund shook his head still laughing, “no, no you didn’t. It’s just that I am 17 and technically I am 32.”
(My math goes like this: LWW Edmund is 12. I aged them up so that instead of waiting one year to go back they waited five, because. Anyways, 12 plus 5 is obviously 17 plus the 15 years they spent in Narnia before going back the first time.)
“You are older than me? I will be 17 in only two months…” she said surprised and he looked at her still amused.
“Y/N” he said. She looked at him questioning. “Would you like me to teach you some swords ‘play’?” She cringed at the word ‘play’ remembering their earlier encounter with each other. “It would be an honor your highness.”
---
“Just try to hit me, don’t worry too much.” And with these words Y/N swung her practice sword as hard as she could at Edmund, him not having imagined her to hit as hard as she did, he almost lost balance defending himself.
“Wow wow easy, alright, you almost killed me.”
“I am sorry but you said to hit! And not to worry!” She exclaimed straightening herself.
“Yes but this time maybe a little less force okay? You are very good but you’re wasting too much energy on one swing.”
She nodded and got into position but he looked at her feet and shook his head. “That’s not it, you have to-, wait let me help.” He went over to hit her feet softly with his so she would stand steadier. “Also you have to hold the sword a little higher.” He took her arm from behind and pushed it upwards. His gaze then slowly went to hers. They were incredibly close to each other, noses almost touching.
“EDMUND!” Peter yelled from the inside of their base. “We have to talk about tomorrow, come on!”
Edmund just kept looking at Y/N and yelled back, “Yes Pete! On my way!” He kept looking at Y/N for a few more seconds, then he slightly bowed and turned around to get to Peter.
Y/Ns legs became weak and she dramatically fell to the ground, her head red and hands sweaty. “I am done.”
Done, was also King Peter way later after he fought Miraz, after Caspian couldn’t kill his uncle and after the war was over. Y/N had been fighting very well, she was scared but determent to help and so she was a great fighter. After meeting Aslan she felt great, they had won and the Narnians were free again. It was time to celebrate, dance and be happy. Everyone was in the new conquered castle, drinking, singing, eating and confessing.
One confession should be especially interesting for you, dear reader.
---
“Your Majesty, can I speak to you for a second?” Y/N said after walking over to the big table where all the old and new, kings and queens of Narnia sat. Edmund looked at Peter and he nodded with a smile. Edmund and Y/N walked out of the main hall to a more quiet place. They walked down the hallway and Y/N suddenly stopped which made Edmund stop too.
“I wanted to tell you something…” she said looking at him nervously. “I don’t expect you to say it back, I don’t even expect you to answer me at all but I have to get this off my chest.”
She was fidgeting with her fingers looking down at them, she was extremely nervous but she had to tell him how she felt.
“I… well, I- the first time I saw you, I was extremely fascinated by you. You were just… incredibly handsome but that’s not all obviously! Over the last weeks I have thought about the way you think and the way you talk and I love all of it. The way you express yourself is so beautiful and the way you care about your family really made me realize how must I love you. I love you King Edmund and an awful lot of that too, it is so much love that it almost hurts and I can hardly breath. There are no words in this world to describe my love for you… I’d probably have to invent another language just to slightly express how I feel.”
She had now looked up at him and her tears started building up, not because she was scared of sad. It was because all of her emotions were too much to be held in her body, she was overwhelmed and to be honest after all that happened she was very happy to let it out. Edmunds expression was evident, he was smiling one ear to another and with that he hugged the girl in front of him tightly and laughed, “I love you too, I love you, I love you, I love you so much.”
Y/N laughed and cried more into Edmunds shoulder while she hugged him as if her life depended on it. They looked at each other and without another word they kissed both smiling and as happy as one could be. As Y/N wanted to break the kiss, was Edmund just leaning in more and more pecking her lips not wanting to let her go and she laughed even more pecking his lips back. Their foreheads rested on each other and he whispered, “I love you.”
“Ew.” Came a voice from beside them around the corner, it was now King Caspian and Queen Susan who had just gone for a little walk around the castle. Y/N eyes widened as she let go of Edmund, not immediately or hastily. “King Caspian,” Edmund said smiling nodding his head while still holding on to Y/Ns hands and Caspian nodded back smiling, “King Edmund.” They smiled at each other while Susan cocked up an eyebrow looking at Y/N questioning but she just shook her head slightly confused.
“I think we should leave them alone, don’t you?” Caspian asked Susan as they were turning back to where they came from. Susan nodded, “I wasn’t planning on seeing this as it is.”
---
The next morning everyone met up to send the people who did not want to live the new way, to the old place where the old kings and queens of Narnia lived also. After Lord Glozelle and Caspians aunt left with his cousin, the people got suspicious.
“HOW DO WE KNOW HE IS NOT LEADING US TO OUR DEATH?” One shouted and the others agreed, Y/N stood in the front close to Edmund and she looked worried at him but he gave her a reassuring smile just as she had done to Prince Caspian at the beginning of this story.
“Sire. If my example can be of any service, I will take 11 mice through with no delay.” Reepicheep, the mouse, offered while talking to Aslan. But Aslan only looked at High King Peter and something very uncomfortable started to build up in Y/Ns stomach.
“We’ll go.” Peter said and Edmunds heart sank into the earth beneath him, “we will?”
Without further explanation Peter just walked up, “come on. Our time’s up.”
Y/Ns mind had already gone blank while the others were talking, they were saying that Peter and Susan were not needed in Narnia anymore and that Lucy and Edmund would return. While Susan went up to King Caspian and Peter and Lucy to Trumpkin, Edmund did go to Y/N holding her hands with his.
“I am so sorry… I had no idea this was, this was how it was going to be.” Edmund said with glossy eyes looking slightly down into the girls eyes and she looked back at him worried.
“I don’t want you to go.” She wanted to say so many things, so many more words but she couldn’t, her throat was tied.
He shook his head now tears flowing down his cheeks, “I don’t want to leave.”
Y/N turned forwards Aslan, “Aslan, couldn’t I go with them? You said everyone could choose to go or stay.”
Aslan smiled at her shaking his head softly, “I am afraid not dear one. Edmund and yourself have quite an important role in the future. Things must happen the way intended.”
Y/Ns looked so incredibly sad, it was hard to look at her without getting sad yourself. “Will I see him again then?”
Aslan smiled and nodded and Edmund and Y/N looked at each other hopeful.
Their foreheads rested against each others savoring their last moments together until next time.
“I love you,” he whispered, heart hurting. She closed her eyes as she whispered back, “I love you.”
Then they kissed each other before hugging as tightly as they could. Both of them crying and everyone feeling sorry for them, they parted. He was about to let go but she held onto his hand and he looked back.
Her eyes said: don’t go.
He turned around again and cupped one of her cheeks kissing her one last time, their salty tears being the last thing they tasted from each other before Edmund turned around again and with one last look at her over his shoulder, he left.

I have a request!!
Emily and Aaron (not together) are texting about work and it somehow turns into them flirting and then sexting and it goes on all week until they finally hook up at the weekend 🫶🏼
Title:  Seems you cannot be replaced (Chapter 2/7)   Summary: It shouldn’t have happened, but they were drunk. It shouldn’t have happened but it felt right. It shouldn’t have happened but now it has. It shouldn’t have happened now they have to deal with it.
Or, Emily always leaves before he wakes up, but she always leaves a note. Word Count:  3,2k Rating:  Explicit Warnings: Smut, sexting, dirty talk, grinding, multiple orgasms, spanking (blink and you’ll miss it)
She walks into the bullpen with anxiety knotting in her stomach. She had sex with her boss, her sort of friend, someone she greatly respected and now everything could change. She knew he wouldn’t fire her but she had worked her ass off to be accepted by him and she didn’t want to go back to them being cold and distant with each other. The hangover she was nursing was also not helping her concern and when Spencer greeted her happily she winced at his loud voice.
“Hey Emily!”
“Hey.” She took a sip of the coffee she had bought on the way before shrugging her jacket off.
“Are you alright?” Spencer asked, worry and curiosity mixing as he looked at her from his desk.
“Yeah.” She gave him a smile. “Had a glass of wine too many at dinner last night, that’s all.” It wasn’t a lie, not technically and she heard Derek snicker behind her.
“Hot date last night?” He grinned and if her head wasn’t pounding she would have rolled her eyes at the other man.
“Not exactly.” When she turned away from Derek, about to pick up one of the files on her desk she sees the familiar black shoes in front of her on the catwalk and she slowly looks up. He’s looking at her with something unsure, dark eyes that the night before had been clouded by want was now soft, almost apologetic and she offered him a small smile.
“Good morning.” He said and made sure to address the entire team before looking at her again. “Can I see you in my office for a moment, you forgot to sign off on a few files.”
“Sure.” She stands up and grabs her coffee and when she turns she’s relieved to see that both Derek and Spencer have gone back to their own work. The seconds it takes for her to walk up the stairs and into his office are silent and tense and when he gestured to the chair across from his at his desk she sits down slowly.
“So.” He starts as he sits down across from her. “How are you?”
“I’m good.” She tries to relax, wants to relieve the awkwardness between them but for maybe the first time in her life, she’s at a loss for words. “How are you?” She finally asks.
“I’m good too.” He leans forward on the desk, one hand clasped in the other. “I thought maybe we should talk… about last night.”
“We were drunk.” She blurts out and the suddenness of it makes him smile despite himself.
“Yes.” His tongue sweeps over his bottom lip and Emily forces herself not to stare at the slight shine left on it. “So besides the hangover I’m assuming you’re nursing, how are you really? Are you okay?”
At that she smiles softly, her worry about how he would treat her in the future gone.
“I’m okay. Are you?” The thought of knowing that she was the first woman since his separation suddenly dawned on her and for some reason it felt wrong that she had taken that from him.
“I’m good.” There’s a beat of silence between them and then he speaks again. “We made a mistake, we don’t have to mention this again.”
“I think that’s wise.” She agrees, the last of her anxiety disappearing as he smiles at her. “We were stupid, but we can pretend it didn’t happen.”
“Deal.”
When she gets back to her desk it already seemed like the previous night had been dream. It was better this way, she knew that, she just wondered if it would last.
*
Days go by, then weeks and they both do what they had agreed to, they don’t mention it again. It’s actually surprising, how easily they get back to normal and for that she’s grateful. She hasn’t forgotten, even through the blurriness of alcohol, every second seemed etched to her memory and sometimes she wonders if he ever thinks about that night too.
The memories mostly come during lonely nights. They had been working too much, she hadn’t felt another person’s touch, hadn’t kissed anybody else, since him, so could anybody really blame her for thinking about it from time to time?
It’s late when she comes home that evening, another case solved, another murderer in custody. She knows that she should go to bed, that she should try and sleep. But she had slept on the plane and it was Friday, so instead she decided to wind down with a movie. Her overnight bag ends up on the floor by the door, her clothes are thrown in the hamper and after a quick shower she turns on the TV just as her phone dings with an incoming text.
She’s sure it’s Penelope’s usual are you home safe, text, but instead the name Aaron Hotchner is blinking up at her and she groans, thinking that they have to go back in already.
“For God’s sake.” She mutters as she opens the text, but the words staring back at her make her furrow her eyebrows in confusion.
Hotch: You did well this week.
Emily:  Thank you. She texts back, not knowing what else to say.
Hotch: Enjoy your weekend Prentiss.
Emily:  You too, got any fun plans?
Hotch: I’m seeing Jack tomorrow. How about you?
Emily:  Not much, going to sleep and try to relax.
There’s a pause, the messages that had been coming instantly, stopping. She looks at her phone but nothing happens, so her focus shifts to the TV. It’s a few minutes before her phone dings again.
Hotch: What do you do to relax?
She stares at her phone, something about the message made her think about that night, got her thinking that maybe that he was thinking about it too. But she could be wrong.
Emily:  It depends. She finally sends back.
Hotch: On what?  The reply was instant now and for some reason she felt like he had cracked the door open to the place they had decided to not mention again.
Emily:  On how restless I am.
Hotch: Yes, being restless is never a good feeling.
She bites her bottom lip at his reply, still unsure if he was just being friendly or not.
Emily:  What do you do when you’re restless? It’s not too direct, if she’s reading too much into this his response would clear it up.
Hotch: I work out, go running.
She sighs, he’s definitely not thinking what she had been thinking. She sits for a second to think of a reply when her phone dings again.
Hotch: And sometimes I think about that night.
She immediately feels her thighs clench in excitement. It had been too long since she got an orgasm from somebody other than herself and they had gotten over it before, what’s to say that they couldn’t again.
Emily:  What do you think about?
Hotch: Your taste.
She isn’t even aware of the whimper that slips out as she reads his message over and over. It’s too late now, they’ve crossed the line already so she quickly texts back.
Emily:  I think about the sounds you make when you come, that raw sound still drives me insane.
Hotch: What else?
Emily:  How you felt inside of me, how big you are. Her hand slips inside her panties, fingers quickly finding her clit.
Hotch: You were so tight on my cock. When you came on it, I could barely fuck you through it.
Emily:  I had bruises from your fingers on my body, when I laid in bed at night I would press on them to remember how you fucked me. She imagined him in a similar position as her, hand stroking his cock and she moaned at the thought.
Hotch: Fuck Emily, I wish you were here.
She stopped touching herself as she quickly weighed her options. It didn’t take long for her to make up her mind.
Emily:  Let me get dressed and I’ll be right there.
She was already halfway up the stairs when she got another text.
Hotch: Don’t wear underwear.
*
When she knocked on his door her body was pumping with adrenaline and want and the moment he opened the door she saw the same thing on him.
“Two-time thing?” She asked quickly as he pulled her inside by a firm grip on the back of her neck.
“Two-time thing.” He agreed before kissing her hungrily, the hand not on her neck already ghosting under her shirt and touched the small of her back, pushing her against him. The gasp that leaves her at the feel of his hard shaft against her makes him smile. He’s only wearing boxers, but as they make their way through the apartment he gets her undressed, humming happily when he realizes that she’s not wearing underwear.
“Good girl.” He whispers and she whines in response. “Did you touch yourself at home?” He asks when he feels how wet she is and she nods. “Did you come?”
“No, which is why I really need you to fuck me.” She chuckles breathlessly and he hums again, low and graveled and she feels goosebumps at the back of her neck. “On the bed.” It’s supposed to come out with the same confidence that she usually has but instead it comes out needy. It doesn’t matter though, because Aaron is laying down on the bed and after she’s pulled his boxers off she’s quick to join him.
She straddles his lap, traps his shaft between her folds and with a glint in her eye she slowly rolls her hips, moving over his shaft and making him feel her wetness as she coats him.
“Fuck, that feels good.” He grunts out, eyes fastened on the way she slides over his cock, trapping it between her folds and his stomach. “Do you think you could come like this? Do you think you could come grinding on my cock?”
“Yes.” She gasps, her hips twitching as her clit rubs against the length of him repeatedly. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that she could, something about the feel of him and the dirty words that seemed to fall effortlessly from his lips assuring her that she would.
Aaron’s head falls back against the pillows for a moment as she continues to move above him. His hands move to grab her hips, helping her to rock her hips back and forth on him. Through heavy-lidded eyes he watches her, from the darkness of her eyes, to the flush on her skin, to her soft breasts and rosy nipples, down where her abs are clenching and finally he takes in the sight of his thick shaft between her folds again. He’s glistening even in the darkness of the bedroom and his hips rock up to meet her movements.
“Fuck, God Hotch.” She moans, her body buckling and his hands tighten on her hips. “It feels so good.”
“You’re dripping on me.” He whispers in awe, never in his life has he seen anything more erotic that Emily right now. Precum leaks from his tip, the need to be inside of her growing but he wants her to fall off the edge first. With that thought in mind he sucks a nipple into his mouth, lapping and biting it softly and she moans louder.
“Come on me baby.” The words are mixed with hot open-mouthed kisses against her collarbone before he catches her lip in a kiss.
Emily couldn’t form a reply, her entire body buzzing with the impending orgasm that was quickly building. She nodded into the kiss, her fingers for sure bruising his chest and shoulder from the way she was grabbing at him. His hips pushed up against hers quicker, the feel of his heated shaft rubbing against her clit getting more intense and then she came with a broken moan.
“Fuck, Hotch!” She buried her face in the crook of his neck as she trembled through earth-shattering pleasure. Her hips buckled and his hands stayed on her, helping her move through her release until she was jerking away from the feeling instead of leaning into it.
“Gorgeous, so pretty coming on me like that.” He whispered in between kisses against her jaw, neck, shoulder, collarbone, anywhere he could reach as Emily’s breathing slowed down.
“I’ve never come that hard in my life.” She chuckled and she saw the proud look on his face. “Don’t look so smug.”
“Me smug? Never.” The grin didn’t leave his face until he felt her shifting above him, the leer quickly going to a darker look of want as she lined the tip of him with her folds. His eyes stayed on her face when she slowly sunk down on him, mouth slack at the heat of her around him.
“So big.” She whimpered, her breathing falling against his face in soft puffs as she started to move again, this time lifting herself up and down instead of grinding.
Aaron groaned as she rode him, let her set the pace as his hands moved over her body, like he was memorizing the feel of her skin against his palms.
“You feel so good.” He grunted, hips pushing up to meet her and enjoying the moans and whimpers that continued to fall from her. “I’ve thought about you like this more times than I want to admit.”  His hand tangled in her dark hair and when he pulled carefully she cried out, the sound a little breathier.
“More, Hotch, more.” She begged and he smirked.
“Get on your hands and knees.”
She was quick to climb off him and he moved behind her. The feel of his hand slapping her ass cheek made her cry out and he did it again.
“You like it rough, don’t you?” It was rhetorical, he knew she did, he still remembered how they had fucked hard enough for the headboard to slam into the wall last time.
“Y-yes.” She gasped and he slapped her two more times. “Please, fuck me.”
The words were barely out before he was pushing inside of her again, deep and hard and she gasped his name. One of his hands moved back to her grip hip, the other found its way to her hair. His finger tangled in the silky strands and when he tugged, her back arched as she hissed at the slight pain in her hairline and the full feeling of him inside of her, but he didn’t move. He waited until she was squirming, needing the friction, needed him to do something and then he pulled her up so her back pressed against his chest.
“You want me to fuck you huh?” He murmured against her ear and she nodded.
“Please.” She begged again and she felt his lips turn into a smile against her neck. His arm sneaked its way around her torso, the hand that had been on her hip moved between her legs. Fingers started to rub her clit at the same time as he started to thrust and Emily was sure her body went numb for a second, and then the pleasure was everywhere.
His rough fingers rubbed softly over her swollen clit, his other hand held onto one breast, tweaking a nipple between his fingers, his breath was hot and clammy against her skin, his cock moving rapidly inside of her. It was overwhelming and addictive as he dragged pleasure from her body.
“Already Prentiss?” His tone was teasing but she was in no state of mind to tell him off, instead she whined her response, causing his fingers on her clit to rub faster. “Fuck yeah, clench my cock.” He gritted out through gritted teeth as she started to tense in his arms.
Her second orgasm ripped through her hard and fast, her moans turning into screams that he had to muffle with his hand over her mouth to keep the neighbors from hearing.
“That’s it, that’s good baby.” He cooed as she slowly came down and started to relax. When he let go of her she fell onto the bed, whimpering when he slipped out of her and she turned around. Her cheeks were flushed pink, eyes hazy and she smiled lazily up at him.
“What are you waiting for?”
He was back inside of her in seconds, fucking her with heavy strokes. Her legs wrapped around his waist, wanting him as deep inside of her as possible and he growled against her shoulder.
Skin slapped against skin, mixing with breathy moans and deep groans. When his fingers found their way back against her clit she jerked and whimpered.
“You can take it.” He encouraged her, dark eyes fastened on her as he circled her clit in time with his moving hips. “You take me so well.”
“Aaron.” She gasped, his first name slipping out before she could stop it, but he didn’t seem to mind, instead he kissed her. It was sloppy and quick and then he was moving up on his knees and continued to thrust into her.
“You are going to come with me.” He panted and for reasons she wasn’t sure of, her body responded to it. Her pussy clenched around him, his fingers on her clit making heat spread through her again. She could see that he felt it, his grin darkening slightly and hips moving faster.
It was only a few minutes later before she came with a raspy moan, her eyes shut tight and back arching. Her thighs trembled as pleasure made her ears ring. Aaron came only a few seconds after her, a string of groans and dirty words falling from his lips as he gave in to his own release.
They stayed like that until their breathing had slowed and the evening chill caused her to shiver as sweat dried on their bodies. Aaron noticed and quickly grabbed the cover and laid down beside her, his arm over her waist.
“This was fun.” She smiled as she turned to face him.
“It was.” He agreed, his finger gentle as he pushed a few strands of hair away from her face.
She didn’t mean to fall asleep, but when she did she noticed that he was sleeping soundly too. She needed to leave, in the dark of night the reality of what they had done again crashed over her. It hadn’t seemed like a big deal, but now when the veil of arousal was gone, she realized how stupid this was.
Carefully she got up in search for her clothes, then quickly wrote down a message.
When Aaron woke up by the sound of his alarm the next morning the space beside him was empty, the sheets cool and he knew that she had left. He looked at the bedside table and found another note, this one written on a post-it.
Didn’t want to wake you. See you on Monday - Emily.

Survivor’s guilt is defined as a condition of persistent mental and emotional stress experienced by someone who has survived an incident in which others died.
When you feel the pain in your chest when talking about an incident that you lived through that you shouldn’t have. When you feel like you are living for so many people that you have lost. When you imagine what it would be like for them if they had taken your place, if you had just been granted access to death. When you are not worthy of the life you are living and constantly being told you're the hero when all you were was the ending.
Chris Redfield has survivor’s guilt. He could not tell you the amount of people he has known that are no longer walking around with him. He could not tell you the amount of funerals he had been in or been to.
He knew grief like it was an old friend. He knew the inside of grief, the texture of the walls that caved in around him. He knew it like he was born alongside it. Grief was a twin to Chris Redfield.
He couldn’t look in the mirror without seeing his companions. Grief and guilt.
He’d like to think he knew the patterns better than anyone else. If someone were to know what it looked like right before he lost someone, it would be him. He wished death wasn’t so spontaneous. He hoped that one day he would save someone on purpose, save someone that he wanted within the world.
The warmth in his chest when he saw you was an indicator. It was a warning sign. It was alarm bells. The taste of your lips was a familiar feeling of something he should not have. The feel of your skin was a promise from the world that it would be righted again. You would be taken away. You had to be, so the world could turn, so that he wouldn’t forget the lives he was living for.
“You’ve been quiet,” you said, gently. You were sitting across from him, two dinner plates between you. His eyes flicked up to yours. You were so good at reading him. You were so concerned, like his personal welfare were your own responsibility. “How was your day?”
“Long,” he said, through a breath. You bit the inside of your cheek, trying to scrounge up something else to say.
“Hopefully they’ll be more bearable once we get jobs together again,” you suggested. The two of you were working for the BSAA and often were sent into the field together. It was helpful for missions if you were both with someone you knew. Usually the job didn’t care that much, knowing that their people were disposable. Warm bodies were not a luxury in a world with 7 billion of them.
But recently you had a drought of time without each other. Different goals, same organization. You missed having him with you to help. You weren’t used to having to vocalize yourself because Chris could read you like a book. He liked to say it was a talent but you knew the truth. He had just learned you so well that he couldn’t know you any better.
“Yeah.” He swallowed hard. You met his gaze.
“What is it?” You wanted to make a joke. Don’t like the Chinese take out? or Jeans too tight? but you refrained. Something had been eating at him for weeks it felt like. He didn’t hold you as close. He was a physical person and his bear hugs were like they’re own luxury.
Chris liked to think of himself as a brave man. He was a lot of things, not a lot of them good, but he was at least brave. He took the steps that needed to be taken. He tried his best to save people for their best interests, not for him. So why was this so hard?
“I think we should break up.”
It was like he had broken the sound barrier. You looked around, searching for an indication that this was some sort of joke. Nothing came.
“What? Why?”
“I think it would be better for both of us.”
“You can’t speak for me.”
“I can.”
“No, no you can’t,” you argued. You were raising your voice now, anger that he was willing to let this go so quickly. “What happened? What did I do?”
Your voice broke his heart. The desperation, the scrounging for something to blame. He was to blame. Didn’t you see that?
“We can’t keep going like this.”
“What?”
“We can’t keep acting like this life is sustainable for either of us. It was nice while it lasted.” He swallowed hard. “Its’ what’s best.”
“Is that what you want?”
There was such a betrayal in your eyes. You had never looked at him like that. Not even when he fucked up on the job, when his mistakes could’ve cost him lives. You never looked at him like he was anything less than perfect.
“Yes.” He couldn’t say anything else. You would see right through him if he spoke again. You would know why he was doing it, you would know that he wasn’t doing this because he wanted to but because he had to. You couldn’t live much longer. He knew how this went.
Your breathing was ragged. The gravity sat in your chest like a weight. If you thought about this for one more second you would start to cry.
“Okay.”
He closed his eyes. Your voice was childlike. It was as though he had just chastised you for doing your favorite thing. You stood up slowly. Each sound was too loud. You tossed your food into the garbage, movements sluggish.
You went through the kitchen door and you didn’t come back.
He sat there until he heard your car start.
-
You gazed down at your bullet proof vest. You felt it in your hands, the weight of it surprisingly familiar. It had seen action. There were scruffs on the sides from the elements and the relentless nights spent sleeping with it on. There was a sharpie marking at the bottom, messily placed there by Chris. You rubbed your finger along it.
“What’s that?”
You looked up.
Ethan Winters stood in the doorway to the bedroom. He walked forward a bit, looking over you to the object in your hands.
“Some stuff from when I worked with the BSAA,” you explained dryly. You handed it to him. He took it, assessing the weight.
“Good thing you don’t have to wear this dumbbell all the time,” he muttered. You laughed gently, successfully being taken out of your nostalgia.
“It’s like five pounds Ethan.”
“That’s heavy.” You shook your head, taking it back. You place it into its box. “Ready to go?”
“Almost,” you promised.
You and your boyfriend Ethan were moving into a new house. He had insisted on living in this one ever since his sister Mia went missing, just in case she returned looking for him. But it had been three years and you had outgrown it. He finally caved, allowing you to go domestic house shopping together.
It had been eight years since you left the BSAA. Eight years since you had seen Chris Redfield, eight years since he had broken up with you. Up until Ethan, you had only dated guys around you which was slim pickings. You thought you had a good one with Chris but that breakup wrecked you.
Then there was Ethan. Then there didn’t need to be anything else.
You had a new life, one that had nothing to do with bioweapons you had once been so accustomed to. You had one that was, as Chris would say, sustainable. You could grow old in your new house with Ethan. Get married. Maybe even have kids. You never would’ve been able to do that before.
“The van’s ready when you are,” he said. “I’m gonna call for pizza.”
“Who said I wanted pizza?”
“When do you not want pizza?”
He left the room. You were alone once again. You shut the box up and taped it. That was then and this is now.
You carried the box downstairs and placed it among the others. Ethan swung by and got some food, then met you back at your new home. You had already started to unload boxes and by the time they were all inside the sun was down. You sat on a cardboard box, munching on cold pizza, as Ethan plugged in his laptop.
“That was exhausting,” he muttered. He had shed his jacket and was now in just a tshirt and jeans that he had sweat through.
“So you’re too tired to christen the house?” He gave you a look. “You wanna finish the pizza.”
“Yes I wanna finish the pizza.” You rolled your eyes playfully.
“I need to shower anyway.” You got up, swallowing the last of your food. You hummed under your breath as you dug around the boxes to find your clothes. Ethan scrolled through his computer wordlessly. You patted his shoulder as you passed him with your clothes.
As you walked upstairs, Ethan opened up his email folders. To the sound of the bathroom door closing, he clicked on the newest one. It had been sent the night before, while he was sleeping. He had taken time off work to move in but this didn’t look like a work email. It didn’t have a title.
He opened it up.
Dulvey, Louisiana.
Baker farm.
Come get me.
-
The conversation seemed too rushed. You got out of the shower and there was a bombardment of feelings that followed. Ethan wanted to leave immediately. She wanted him to come and get her, after all these years. He was already looking at flights, at a route that he could drive. The words and pleads came stumbling out of his mouth.
She needs me.
She’s stuck there, she needs me.
The instinct that bubbled in your chest was one you were familiar with. The preparation for a place that no human should venture. You wanted to give him a gun and a vest and let him be.
“I got out of that life so that you and I could be safe.”
“This isn’t like that.”
“You know it is.”
You were sitting down to his standing. You looked up at him with real concern in your eyes.
“What else could it be? That she’s been taken and then all of the sudden sends you a cryptic email instead of calling the police? How would she even know you hadn’t changed your email? Come on Ethan, think about this.” Silence hung in the air, fighting one anothers wills. You and Ethan rarely got into arguments and you still weren’t sure if you had the power in this conversation or not. It was his sister, sure, but something was wrong here. If anyone would know, you would.
“I have to.”
“Let me come with you.” Your mind flashed back to the unopened box of your old things. You could put that vest back on. Would there be any coming back from that?
“No. No, I can’t let you. This isn’t your fight.”
“Your fight is my fight.”
“I can’t lose you both,” he said, voice low. There was an air of vulnerability about him that mixed with his natural headstrong nature. You knew that feeling, the pit in your chest of losing someone in the search for something else.
“Let’s go to bed. Think on this. Okay? We can talk about it in the morning,” you pleaded. Maybe if he thought about it for longer than two seconds he could stay with you. You could have that sustainable life.
It took him a moment of contemplation but he finally nodded. You breathed slowly as you stood up. You had nothing but the mattress on the floor. It wasn’t going to be comfortable but it wasn’t going to be awful. You had each other.
He got his pajamas on slowly. You could practically see the cogs turning in his head. You wanted to argue about this more but you had already stopped the conversation. You had to stick to your guns. He would feel differently in the morning.
He got under the comforter with you. There was a lone lamp beside his head, giving all the light in the room. He turned it off as he rested his head.
“Ethan,” you mumbled. He turned his head back to you and for just a moment, his thoughts cleared. It was just the two of you again. It could be just the two of you forever. “I love you.” His smile softened. He moved towards you, throwing his arm around you. You nuzzled into his chest.
“I love you too,” he promised but his heart didn’t seem in it like it usually did.
-
You woke up before the sun. Your eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the darkness that engulfed the room. You groaned involuntarily. Ethan’s arm was no longer around you. You turned around to face him, ready to make some complaint, when you were met with emptiness. You paused, starring, delirious. It took you far too long to catch up to the obvious reason he was no longer gone.
Once it hit you, you started to move.
You threw yourself out of the mattress, running to teh bathroom. The house was still a maze to you. It would be home soon but it wasn’t home yet. The familiarity of it was missing which made it more eerie.
“Ethan!” you called, voice weak with sleep. You looked out the window, trying to find the shapes of the cars. One was missing. Your heart started to beat faster as you went into a panic. “Ethan!” you called again, louder now. You flung open every door desperately until you were back at the bedroom. Under the lamp there was a note. You rushed for it, almost ripping it while you snatched it.
I’m sorry. I love you more than anything.
I’ll be back soon, I swear.
E
You let out a shaky breath. You cursed, throwing the paper down weakly, kicking the wall.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,” you whispered. You had to follow him. There was no other option. He had to know you would follow him. Despite it being 4 in the morning you turned all the lights in the house on. You searched for the box you had hoped to forget.
Finally, at your feet, was the recently taped box. You tore it open and grabbed the vest out of it. There was no use in dwelling on the signature or the comfortableness of it. You needed to get ready to go.
-
The Baker Farm was too far out of the way. You had started to lose cell service by the time you finally reached it. You had gone down the same dirt road Ethan had by the looks of his parked car. You wanted to slash the tires out of frustration. Knowing you were on the same insurance plan, you refrained.
You followed the lightly treaded walkway to the gate of a large house. The gate was locked and too tall to climb. You went around the edge to what looked to be the guest house.
You just had to hope you weren’t too far behind him. He had hours of a jump on you but you had seen his car. He was here.
You checked your phone. Nothing. Would you even get any calls out here?
You pushed forward through the guest house. It looked abandoned, like someone had just picked up and left dinner. The smell of mold traveled through the air. It almost felt like you could see the particles through the setting sun. Someone had left the door in the back open, leading to the long hallway. Something or someone had been pushed through a wall, resulting in debris flying everywhere. Someone had struggled here. Recently.
You fought the pit in your stomach and forced yourself to think of the best. It was normal. There were no bioweapons all the way out in the middle of Louisiana somewhere. Why would there be? Ethan was fine. Ethan had to be fine.
The tenseness of your shoulders was familiar. You did not miss the ache or the worry. You turned to go up the stairs. Deja Vu washed over you, brought on by archived feelings.
Chris attempted to never leave your side but he too often did. You were both used to finding each other again, it was part of the job. You could get separated by a wall or a weapon and you would find each other again.
It had been too long and the familiar fear creeped into your mind. He was here but you couldn’t hear him. He had to be here, his GPS assured you. The silence was deafening. You swore then to never yell at him again, if he could just emerge unscathed from the rubble of another fight. Could Chris Redfield go down like this? In the middle of some nameless mission, with just you to carry him back home?
“Here!”
Relief washed over you as you rushed back to him, moving aside the debris of a fight you had not been a witness too. Dirt covered his face. He was almost unrecognizable in the dried maroon blood that covered his body.
“Are you okay? Oh God. Oh God Chris,” you whispered, holding him with your hands like he wasn’t real.
“I’m okay,” he breathed. “I’m okay.”
You ached for the relief you had felt then. Ethan wasn’t as capable as Chris had been. Where would you find him? The top of the guest house revealed a larger view of the house. At the bottom was a man, a large mallet over his shoulder, dragging someone away by their feet.
Ethan.
He was unconscious but even just seeing him made you feel better.
Then you noticed the mold.
Something was wrong with that man, with that house. It was covering the ground, pulsating like it was alive. Instinct kicked in before feelings. You grabbed your phone out of your pocket, watching keenly to see where they were taking Ethan.
You glanced down at your phone, praying that his number hadn’t changed, and hovered over Chris’s name. You had never been able to do these things alone and you were no use to Ethan if you were dead.
You closed your eyes so you wouldn’t see yourself click the button. You put the phone up to your ear, listening to it ring, hoping he wouldn’t pick up, hoping you wouldn't be able to make a phone call this far out.
On the sixth ring you were beginning to lose whatever hope you had. Then he picked up.
“Hello?” His voice was wary but familiar. It made you weak in the knees, just hearing him speak, his cadence the exact same.
“I need you.”
-
You didn’t want to wait but you had given Chris the directions to your car. You didn’t want him to have to play catch up for you the entire time so you waited outside the guest house, pacing. You didn’t know how long you had but he promised he would be there in under an hour. You weren’t sure how he would manage that but you trusted his word.
Sure enough, just about fifty minutes later, he emerged from the bushes. Older. Weathered. His eyes were harder than they had been, less emotion behind his gaze. You reminded yourself you were doing this for Ethan, even as the rush of emotions had returned. You hadn’t seen each other since you had moved out.
“You came,” you breathed.
“You called.” You pursed your lips, wanting to thank him, wanting to think about the elephant in the room, wanting to beg him for answers that had been plaguing you forever. Instead you were gentle with your words.
“Thank you Chris.” He nodded once.
“We’ve been scoping this area. The disappearances here are akin to something consistent with bioweapons,” he said, walking past you. “Where’d you last see your friend?”
“Ethan was out towards the main house. I’ve spotted at least one bioweapon but the ground is covered in some sort of black mass. Do you know anything about that?” He handed you a gun without a word. You took it. It was yours. He had kept yours. It begged so many questions. Had he been using it? Did he even recognize it as yours anymore? Did he dig it out of the rubble, just like you did the vest you were wearing?
“A bit.”
“You’re being awfully cagey.”
“This is still work for me.” You nodded once. He was going to stay reserved. It didn’t matter what you two had, he was here for the job. This is exactly the reason you left without a fuss. It would always be the job and then you.
“Alright. Welll follow me.”
At the edge of the property was an older house, one that was falling apart at the seams. You managed to get around the bayou to enter it in an attempt to reach the main house, where you were sure they were keeping Ethan.
“What’s he doing out here?” Chris questioned. You glanced at him. It was like seeing a ghost in his eyes. How could Chris have become a stranger to you? How had you gotten here?
“Looking for his sister Mia. She went missing three years ago and yesterday he got an email from her with this location.”
“Not exactly tangible evidence.”
“That’s what I said.” You kept in stride with him. He pushed through doors, turning around quickly to make sure there was no threat. He led. You watched his six. “I told him to sleep on it. When I woke up he was gone.”
“You’re living together?” His voice showed no sign of emotion. He was asking as though you had never known each other. He was asking like you were a civilian and he was gathering all the useful information.
“Yes. He’s my boyfriend.” A beat in his step was missed but it was hardly noticeable. You pushed past him.
“And he didn’t feel the need to tell you he was leaving for Louisiana?”
“He knew I disagreed with him.”
“Sounds like someone else I knew.” The first allusion that you had ever once known each other. You walked in front of him as you crossed a bridge into the main yard.
“I listened.”
“In one ear and out the other,” he argued. He was detached from his words. You wanted to ask him why he had even come. Why hadn’t he investigated this before you called if he knew it was here? What was his angle?
“It always ruminated in my head for a bit.” You reached the yard. The house was vast and unfamiliar. It loomed in the nighttime air. There were lights on upstairs and some lamps in the main room. You approached the front door and attempted to open it. It didn’t budge. You hit it, kicked it, cursed at it.
“Move,” Chris demanded. He rammed his body against the door. You watched him, watched as he tensed his muscles through his tactical vest. The door remained intact but you didn't even notice after a minute. When were you going to allow yourself to admit that you missed him?
You looked through the window, cupping your hands around your eyes. You jumped at a face emerging from the other side.
“Y/N?”
“Ethan!” You put your palms against the glass. He was on the other side. The window was murky and cloudy but you knew his face well enough to recognize it through the blur. From the faint look, he was okay. He was alive. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I’m okay,” he said, weakly. It sounded like a lie. You narrowed your eyes but he couldn’t tell.
“I specifically told you not to come,” you said.
“It’s too late now.” “Did you find Mia?” He took a deep breath.
“Yeah. Listen, if you see her you have to be careful. All of the people here are normal one second and then they are something completely different.” You nodded.
“Can you get through the door?”
“No. I have to find three keys.”
“Fuck,” you muttered. “Spencer Mansion all over again.” You glanced at Chris. “Listen, I brought a friend out here. We’re gonna try and get in.” You tried the door again to no avail.
“I’m gonna try and find the keys,” Ethan said. You didn’t want him to go but realistically couldn’t have him stand there with you, not with the apparent threats roaming the house. You nodded.
“Please be careful.”
“You too.” He left then, hand lingering on the glass. You turned to Chris, embarrassed. His jaw was set. “I’m gonna clear the trailer.” You nodded once, watching him go.
-
Chris tried to convince himself he was happy for you. You had made a life for yourself. That’s exactly what he wanted you to do. He left you so that you would make a life he could never give you. Granted, he never expected to see the fruits of his sacrifice. The longer he was with you the more it became evident to him that his emotions never faded. It was like nothing had changed but everything had. You were the same but different. You caused him to want to smile even at dumb things, like attempting to open a door you knew was locked. You were in love with someone else. He had never seen you in love with someone else. He didn’t like the feeling of watching you with Ethan.
His sense of duty overrode his emotions but even that wasn’t enough to stop his lingering gazes.
You adjusted your vest in the trailer mirror. There was a head in the fridge and a gun on the counter. You were glad you had called Chris. He reloaded his gun as he watched you out of the corner of his eye.
“There can’t be much padding left in that,” he said gruffly.
“Hm?”
“The vest.” You looked down at it, like you hadn’t even noticed you were adjusting it. Your finger brushed his signature.
“It still does its job,” you promised. “Why, you got an extra?” He shook his head. You turned back towards him. “That’s what I thought. I’d rather have this than nothing at all.”
You kept the vest he had signed.
He kept the gun you had used.
How long could you dance around this stupid confession?
“I’m gonna try to break the window,” you said finally. “To the front house.”
“You don’t think they have bullet proof windows?”
“We’re in the middle of Dulvey.” You shrugged. “It doesn’t hurt to try.” Chris’s jaw set, nodding curtly. He followed you outside. He was weary of the ever growing black goop gathering outside. You tried to hit the window but nothing gave. You tried to hit it again, causing a more aggressive boom. “Shit. This gun was not made for this. Anything around I can use?” Chris started to look around his feet for something stronger. You moved along the deck.
Abruptly, there was a squelching sound coming from the middle of the yard, near the trailer. Both you and Chris raised your gun, instinct taking over before the thought process. You watched as the black goop grew into some sort of figure, barely able to stand on its own two feet. You tried to force yourself to act surprised but nothing came. It was life like it used to be.
Chris shot it first. It stumbled, just barely. You shot its head once and then twice. It came down only when the head was removed.
“You ok-” you started and was suddenly cut off when something moved behind you. You turned but it was too late. There was something on your shoulder, something wet and cold and big. You had figured because your back was to the house, you didn’t need to watch it. You heard the gunshots but didn’t see them. You breathed deeply as the blackness dissipated.
You stumbled backwards, hitting something else hard. You jumped, raising your gun, but Chris grabbed your wrist before you could even point it far.
“Hey, hey.”
It had been a minute since you were scared like that. You couldn't remember the last time your life was on the line. The shock must have shown in your eyes because Chris was holding your arms gently, looking at you with sympathy. “You’re okay,” he promised. You nodded. Your brain reverted back to where you knew that voice from and the comfort it brought. You cleared your throat, sitting up, swallowing hard.
“I’m fine,” you promised. “I’m fine.” You stood up, wobbling on your feet. He held your elbow. “I’m just a bit rusty.” He scoffed.
“Whatever you say.” He looked around. “They come out of the black mass. We watch that like it’s open space from now on,” he ordered. You nodded.
“Okay. Yeah.” You cleared your throat. The coldness was gone.
“What did I say?”
“Black mass is bad.”
“Good girl.” You cleared your throat, flushing. “Now if you ever want your boyfriend out of that house, we have to keep moving.” He adjusted your vest with worry and then walked away like nothing had happened. You followed him with your eyes.
-
You and Chris were outside debating if he could hoist you up onto the balcony of the second floor when the front door opened. You both looked down, eyes wide, as Ethan fell through the front door. He was clutching his side and a gun was in his hand.
You ran up to him, almost dropping your gun yourself.
“Oh God, Ethan? Ethan, are you okay?” He allowed himself to fall into your embrace, wrapping his arms around you tightly. You breathed evenly as you held him in your arms. You pulled away to see him, look him in the eyes. “What’s wrong? What’s hurt?” There was dried blood on his face. Was it his?
“I’m fine. I’m okay.” You pursed your lips, backing up. You looked him up and down and grabbed his hand.
“What is this? Are these staples? What is this?”
“I’m okay.” You gave him a bewildered look, mouth agape. His hand was held together by staples now.
“I told you not to come. I told you to wait for me.” If you thought he would live through you hitting him, you would. You were relieved he was okay but you were angry he had left without telling you, putting himself in danger. You had shared with him your stressors about past relationships and he had walked right into one of them.
“Who’s this?”
Speaking of past relationships.
You had almost forgotten Chris was there.
He stood behind you, eyes averted, chin up.
“Ethan, this is Chris Redfield. He was my partner when I worked at Stars and the BSAA.” Ethan knew the name and he knew the reaction he should have to it. He had driven you to do something you never wanted to do again. Ethan’s actions hadn’t manifested in you calling the man that had broken your heart. And you didn’t look like your heart was shattered.
“We need to leave,” Chris explained, not bothering with a hello. He was keenly aware of the situation you were all in.
“I still have to find Mia,” Ethan explained.
“Did she do that to your hand?” you questioned.
“There’s something wrong with her. I know where the anecdote is, if I can find that and find her then we can all leave.”
“She’s a lost cause,” Chris explained. “There’s no use in looking for her now. The BSAA is currently narrowing explosives on this area and we need to be gone before the sun comes up if we don't want to get caught up in his destruction.”
“I’m not going to leave her here,” Ethan argued. “The family here are infected by something. I think it has to do with the child she was watching before she went missing. I’ve found some infor-”
“In this line of work, we shoot first and ask questions later. I don’t expect you to know that Ethan but we need to leave,” Chris said, cutting him off. Ethan’s face hardened. You could tell the change in his demeanor as he moved his shoulders back, eyes going dark. You had no way of telling what he had gone through in that house and you had a feeling it was going to take a while to get it all out of him.
“Do you agree with him?” Ethan asked, looking at you.
“Don’t put me in the mi-”
“You’re in the middle. I’m putting you there,” Ethan said. “Do you think we should leave her and this entire family to just die?” You looked at him with soft eyes. This was one of the hard decisions you and Chris had to make everyday. You missed the naiveness of his viewpoint immensely. You thought you were working back towards it but it seemed the hard work never let you be.
“I won’t risk your life for hers.”
“I’m not asking you to risk my life.”
“Will you risk mine?” Ethan shook his head in disbelief.
“We’re losing time being out here,” he said. “I’m going to the old house and looking for that cure. Come with me or don’t, I don’t care.”
“You don’t mean that,” you said, reaching to grab him before he left but he brushed you off. You looked at Chris with pleading eyes, eyes he knew well. “We can’t possibly leave civilians here and nuke the place Redfield.”
“It’s their choice to leave.”
“Mia doesn’t have a choice,” Ethan called. He was already walking away. Incredibly conflicted, you stared at Chris, hoping for some guidance. He had never been the one to give guidance in your relationship.
“Chris.”
He had only ever turned you down once in his life. The look in your eyes could make him weak in his knees anyday. You could get him to toss himself off a building with that look. His jaw hardened.
You could die without him.
You could die with him, he thought. When had he ever been able to save others before?
“Chris,” you pleaded.
“We have four hours till sunrise. You and I will be gone by then.” You nodded curtly. He approached you before you could walk away. “But you’re not going to run around in that vest,” he muttered. He unbuckled the one he was wearing, untightening it as he lifted it over his head. Your eyes softened. He was still trying to protect you. Maybe he had been trying to protect you all along.
“Chris I won’t let you-”
“I’m stronger than you.” You smirked, looking up at him. He had a smug look in his eyes.
“I don’t remember you being forceful.”
“I never had to be. You were always a willing participant,” his voice was soft but disregarding. You glanced at Ethan who you could barely see in the shrubbery as he walked away. He took off your vest and placed it on the ground as he put his own over your head. “You need it more than me.”
“I’m just a little rusty.”
“I can’t risk a little rusty.” He tightened it around your waist, the same way he would help you mid mission before. It was warm. Was it humid out here or was it just the way his fingers brushed your skin?
“Thank you,” you breathed. He nodded. He put your old one over his head. He had left all the things in his tactical vest. “You want any of these?”
“I could do with a knife what you can do with a bomb.” You raised an eyebrow.
“You better watch out Redfield. I might show you up even with the rust.”
“I’d like to see you try.” You wrapped your hands around the straps and leaned back, tilting your head.
“I missed you.” He tried not to show any emotion but the words seemed so magical he couldn’t help it. He took a deep breath.
“You know I did it to protect you right?”
“I know now,” you said quietly.
“You have a life.”
“I have a life,” you repeated. It was like you were trying to convince yourself of it more than him. You looked at Ethan. In the moment nothing seemed more appealing than leaving with Chris and being safe somewhere other than here. You knew what you had to do regardless. “You know, in another life, I wouldn’t have minded dying in your arms,” you said quietly. He had that sad look in his eyes.
“I wouldn’t have lived through it,” he admitted. You gestured with your head.
“Yes you would’ve. Come on. We have things to do.”

Life changes in just a fraction of a second.
One second, you’re an acclaimed romance author living your best life. And then you get a call in the middle of a promotional event for your latest book. You don’t usually answer your phone when you’re working, but a tiny voice in the back of your mind tells you—screams, actually—that this is an important call you should answer.
And just a second later, you find out that your best friends, Luke and Anne Hawkins, have been involved in a serious car accident and that you need to come back to San Diego as soon as possible. You’re listed as one of their emergency contacts.
It only takes a fraction to change your life.
Tumblr media
You’re one hour away from San Diego, and as soon as you get to the city, you drive to the police station, where Officer Young, the officer that called you to inform you about the accident, is waiting for you to tell you more about the current state of your friends. It’s dark when you get there; there are only a few lights here and there, making the whole space gloomier than it should be.
Stations are places where people—not the criminals but the victims—should feel protected and secure. The ambience of this station makes you want to run away in the opposite direction.
You wish you had.
“Miss L/n?” A man in his early 50s approaches you, clad in his uniform and with a sorrowful expression on his face.
“Yeah, it’s me. Why are we at the station, officer? Shouldn’t we go to the hospital?” You say, feeling a bit dumb because, deep down, you know that Luke and Anne are not in the hospital. They didn’t give you more information over the phone, and that can only mean one thing.
They’re gone.
“Miss L/n, you may want to sit down before I tell you this.” He insists, pointing with his open hand to a chair a few steps away from you. You shake your hand, refusing to move, and wait for him to deliver the news that is going to change your life forever. “Miss, Luke and Anne Hawkins had an accident a few hours ago, as I told you over the phone. The causes of the same are still unclear but-”
"Is Emma okay?” You blurt out, feeling your heart stop for a second.
“She was at home with the babysitter; don’t worry about her. She’s been taken by CPS.”
You frown, not understanding what that means. “What is that?”
“Child Protective Services. They take care of kids like Emma.”
“What kind of kids?”
“Orphaned kids.”
Orphaned kids. Luke and Anne are dead. Dead. You had talked with Anne a few hours before, before your promotional event started, because you were feeling completely nervous and she was the one that used to calm you down.
Who’s going to calm you down now?
A nearby door opens, and you hear a familiar voice. On any other occasion, you would have rolled your eyes and groaned after noticing his presence, but now?
Jake Seresin is the closest thing to a lifeline you have right now.
“Jake.” You call, watching as the man turns around, tightening the grip on the leather aviator jacket in his hands.
He looks at you with a silent question in his eyes that gets answered with a simple glance.
“They’re gone?” He mutters, his voice coming out under a shaky breath.
You nod, and your knees buckle up, and you fall to the ground as soon as the information gets to your brain. It’s not until he says it, until he verbalizes it, that you realize that they are gone forever, that you won’t be able to text Anne and beg her to read your next novel before it’s published, that she won’t ask you to help her get an outfit for a date with Luke ever again.
You won’t fight anymore. You won’t laugh together anymore. You won’t tell her you love her ever again.
Did you tell her that before you hung up the phone hours ago? You can’t tell.
But you can’t stop praying that you did.
Jake rushes to you, kneeling down and hugging you in an awkward way, as physical contact has never been part of the ‘forced friendship’ you two have had for the last years. As Emma’s godparents, you were there through the entire pregnancy and for the baby’s first year.
Would you still be the godmother once a random stranger takes Emma as their daughter?
“Page? Page, come on. Okay, listen to me, take a deep breath, hold it for three seconds, and then let it out.” He instructs you, wanting to get you out of your hyperventilating state. But you can hear in his voice that he also wants to break down and cry.
Luke was his best friend. They met at the academy, and served together for years before a mission got complicated and Luke got injured while ejecting from the plane. He got a medical discharge, as the injury didn't allow him to fly again.
Jake feels as lost as you, because Luke was his best friend, like Javy’s. They’ve been together through thick and thin. It was a constant in their lives. And now he’s gone.
Gone.
Tumblr media
You're not allowed to see Emma tonight. She has been taken with a foster family until CPS finds the closest relatives or they find out who was supposed to get her custody, according to her parents' last wishes. .
It irks you more than anything. Jake suggests staying the night at Luke and Anne's house, and while you know he has the best intentions, just the thought of being in this place makes your stomach turn.
It's like a place frozen in time, waiting for its owners to come back and return to the activities they were doing before they crashed. There's a laundry basket in the living room, with baby clothes waiting to be folded. Emma’s toys are scattered around the house, and you step on an F-18 plush toy that Jake gifted her when she was born. The dishwasher it's waiting to be emptied and, in general, small chores are waiting to be done around the house.
A house that is waiting for a family that doesn't exist anymore.
Needless to say, you don't sleep at all.
You wait until the clock marks a normal hour to get downstairs and walk into the kitchen. Jake is there, making coffee and rubbing his face in an attempt to make the restlessness disappear from his face.
"You didn't sleep either." You say, not even questioning, you just know.
"Every time I closed my eyes I saw them." He confesses, looking at the blue mug in his hands. "Coffee?"
"Please."
He prepares a coffee for you, probably the nicest thing he has ever done. You two didn't have a meet cute, and he was a dick. On your first (and only) date, he made a booty call for later that night. You were right next to him.
Hating each other was the only thing you agreed on over the years.
You mutter a soft thanks when he hands you the coffee, and he presses his lips in a thin line. "The lawyer called. He wants to talk to us about their will."
You sigh, feeling that the world is moving when you're still stuck in that station your life changed forever. "Did he say when?"
"He's coming right now."
Nodding you step out the kitchen, walking to the bathroom to make yourself look decent before the lawyer arrives.
Tumblr media
“They picked us together?” Jake questions, looking at the lawyer as if he had grown a second head.
Luke and Anne had named both of you the legal guardians of Emma. Both of you, at the same time. How are you supposed to raise a child with a man that you can’t even stand?
“Yeah, I talked with them and tried to advise them against it, but they didn’t listen. They insisted that you two would be the perfect parents for Emma.” He states, looking at your scared faces and closing the file in front of him. “Look, I know this isn’t how you wanted to start a family but-”
“Woah, we’re not married. Or dating.” You clarify, shivering at the thought of sharing your time with this arrogant pilot.
“Excuse me, what?”
Jake and you look at each other, feeling as if you had said something you shouldn’t have. “We’re not a couple.” Jake repeats, tilting his head. “Is that a problem?”
“Jake, you’re a naval aviator, right?”
“Yes, sir. Luke was too before the accident.”
“And from what Luke told me before he died, you’re part of an elite squad that is in charge of the most dangerous missions?”
You don’t have to hear the next words from the man seated in front of you to know what he’s implying. Jake’s job is too dangerous for CPS’s standards.
"How does this relate to Emma?" Jake objects, feeling offended by the way this man simplifies his job.
“CPS wants to make sure that Emma doesn’t lose more people. And you, Jake, are walking around with a timer in your head. It's just a matter of time before you have an accident.”
“You wouldn’t say that if you knew shit about me, you as-”
“Okay so, Jake can’t have Emma’s custody. What about me?” You interrupt, trying to prevent Jake from getting sued.
“Miss, you are a well-known writer across the country, but I don’t think CPS is going to give total custody to a single woman in her late 20s. You’re too young.” He sighs, scratching his brow, and takes off his glasses.
“We can’t let Emma be raised by some strangers. We’re her godparents, dammit.” Jake protests, getting up from the chair and pacing around the room. “There’s nothing we can do?”
“Well… I can suggest something, but you must keep this off the record.” The lawyer says, looking at both of you.
“We won’t tell a soul.” Jake promises, sitting down again.
“You have to get married.”
“Beg your pardon?” You say, hoping that you have heard that wrong.
“If you two get married, CPS won’t have a single thing against you, and Emma will be yours.”
“O-okay, can we, like… have a moment to think about this?” You beg, feeling the room spin around you.
“I’m afraid there’s not much time for that. You’ll have to get married in… days. If not before.”
“Won’t they suspect us if we suddenly get married?” Jake asks, and you turn your head in his direction. Is he considering it?
“Just tell them that you wanted to get married in the future, but you thought that it would be better for Emma to have married parents.”
“Jake?”
He looks at you, noticing the fear in your eyes. You’re a romance author. You’ve been dreaming about meeting a good man, falling in love, and getting to build a family for as long as you can remember, but... this isn’t what you planned.
This isn’t one of your rom-coms.
"Do you want Emma to be raised by strangers?" He says, using a harsh tone to make you understand the raw reality.
“No, but”
“There’s no buts, Page. We don’t have any other options.”
“I’m not marrying you.” You state, looking at your hands.
“I think none of us have a say in that. I’ll call the registry office and see if we can go today.” He gets up and shakes the lawyer’s hand before grabbing his phone and stepping out of the room to make some calls.
This isn’t how you were supposed to have a family. This isn’t how your life was supposed to be.
You were supposed to fall in love, marry, and then have a baby. But you’re going to have a baby and marry.
Falling in love doesn’t seem like an option anymore.

summary. Jake was your father’s best friend but to him, he was like his brother. When you entered puberty, you started to feel foreign feelings about him that certainly, you shouldn’t have been having. When you got a bit older, you grew closer to him and you noticed that he acted the same way toward you.
notes. motivation quite low right now :/ Tsu’tey is alive here :> not proofread :< I know said I was gonna post this on friday but ive been tired as hell, im srry bebes :(

Your loincloth hit your thighs as you leaped over the log that had fallen on the dirty ground. Behind you, Jake was walking next to your dad who had an arm wrapped around your mother’s shoulder. You had taken initiative and led the pack to the ceremony, making sure to be far enough ahead where you could avoid Jake.
As you lifted the flower vines at the entrance, you were greeted with the scent of lavender. If you blurred your eyes, you were sure that all you could see was blue. Their clothes, hair decorations, lights hanging from the trees even the food. People were seriously committed to this and now you were starting to feel grateful that you came.
Your parents got distracted by family friends bringing them into a conversation that surely would last longer than necessary. Jake had gotten the attention of a group of na’vi women, close to his age. Their backs were so arched that it hurt you physically while looking at them. They had pulled their shirts down so that their cleavage was protruding out of the hem.
You scoffed in annoyance and made your way toward the dining table. The variety of foods and sweets brightened you up and your sweet tooth felt already satisfied. You placed an episoth seed pastry into your mouth and hummed at the flavor.
“Welcome, yuey” (beautiful) Neïtan walked from behind you and placed his hand on your lower back. You welcomed his touch and turned your head around shooting him a sweet smile.
“Hi, Neïtan” You placed your hands around his neck and hugged him, pressing your bodies together. Neïtan was Tsu’tey’s son and he had been part of your life since you were young. You were aware of his crush on you and although you didn’t mind his flirty comments at times, you tried to be more distant so as to not lead him on.
“Haven’t seen you in a while, how you’ve been?” he smiled and took a piece of the pastry that you had bitten into.
“Past few weeks have been slow but it’s been nice,” You said and took a sip from your drink.
“Yeah, it’s getting warmer outside. My little sister went out to play on the tree swing and when she came back in she was also sunburnt,” Your chuckles mixed with his as you pictured his little sister’s face.
Your attention was all on Neïtan and you did not notice Jake, biting down his teeth and death staring at you both. Neither did Neïtan apparently which is why it was such a surprise when you heard his voice.
“Yeah my-”
“Are the pastries good?” Jake interrupted you and reached in between Neïtan and you to grab dessert. Neïtan looked at the man and his eyebrows furrowed, as he recognized him.
“Jake Sully,” He put emphasis on the “u” and you struggled to contain your smile as his pronunciation was ridiculous.
“Who are you?” Jake’s voice remained stern.
“Neïtan te Rongloa Ateyitan,” He crossed his arms in front of his chest.
“Tsu’tey’s son,” Jake nodded and ate the pastry. He looked down at you and you could see anger in his eyes.
“Well, Neïtan if I am not mistaken you are supposed to look over the people here, supposed to be their protector.” Jake placed his hand on Neïtan’s shoulder.
“How would your father feel if he found out you weren’t doing your duty?” Jake furrowed his eyebrows and nodded at Neïtan as he could see the boy getting nervous.
“I should go. Txon, syulang” (night, flower) He walked away and Jake took his place in front of you. A smirk appeared on his face as he threw a grape in his mouth and watched Neïtan walk away.
Then he looked down at you,
“What?” He asked
“Fuck you, Jake,” You pushed him away and followed Neïtan to where he was going. Avoiding any trouble with his father, the man walked toward Tsu’tey with his head down, rushing to interpret the situation and why he had left. Before he could enter his father’s sight, you intertwined your hand with his pulling him towards your direction.
“Syulang. What’s up?” He laughed at your silliness and you shushed him by forcefully pulling his hand to walk with you. When you had gotten deep enough into the forest so that the music from the festival wasn’t audible anymore, you pulled him down to sit under a tree next to you.
The silent went on forever until he finally broke it, “Jake seemed pissed,
You looked at him ashamed, “I am sure Neïtan..he had no right to speak to you that way,”
“Syulang, don’t apologize. It was my fault for intruding in your relationship,” You rose from where you were laying down on the ground and looked at him, eyes open.
“You stuttered, “What are you talking about?”
“I’m not blind, y/n. The way he reacted...I could tell he was jealous,” He gave you a sad smile as he came to the realization that you were already taken. His hopes of mating with you were now non-existent.
“I don’t know what to say Neïtan,” What could you say? You felt as if you had led him on this entire time and now you were carelessly crushing his heart. Any insecurity you had about yourself, increased at that very moment.
“You shouldn't say anything, syulang. It was my fault for pushing it when it wasn’t going to happen. I just want you to be happy,” His eyes softened as your eyes teared up. To say you were sad was an understatement.
“C’mere” You wrapped your arms around his neck, squeezing him into suffocation.
“You wanna choke me to death so that I forget this, is that it?” He laughed earning a flick to the forehead from you. He put his hand on the skin, acting as if he was hurt.

It took you about an hour to get back to your hub and Neïtan gave you a hug before running off to who knows where. When you pulled open the flap, you were welcomed by laughter and loud cheers. The hub was filled with people, some playing games, others enjoying each other’s company.
Your parents were sitting on the couch outside on the balcony, chatting with friends and cracking jokes. Your eyes scanned the room for the man you had interrupted your evening for. Your excitement quickly faded and was replaced with disappointment when you saw him leaning over the counter, making a pretty girl giggle.
Not that he had to say anything funny to make her giggle, as you’ve noticed that his mere presence made girls' knees weak. Your eyebrows furrowed and you bit the inside of your cheek, jealousy had caught you. She held onto his arm and he sipped on his drink.
As if he could sense his eyes on him, he whipped his head around and looked at you. His eyes had gotten dark and he lifted his arm out of the girl’s grasp. He took one last sip from his cup and set it down heavily on the counter. He quickly rose from his seat, ignoring the girl’s confusion, and speedily walked towards you. He walked past you, grabbing your hand in the process without stepping to look at you.
He huffed as he stomped towards an unknown location. When you arrived at a secluded spot in the forest, he aggressively pulled you in front of him.
“What is wrong with you?”
Offended you said, “Excuse me? You let her rub herself all over you and I am the problem,”
“Yeah, and who knows what you did with Neïtan in the forest. God y/n, you’re so difficult” He threw his hands up and then let them rest on his hips.
“I’m difficult? What was I supposed to do, wait patiently in the corner until you were done being petted and undressed by all the women that were drooling over you? Wait like a stupid servant until you finally remembered me and stopped drowning in your own ego?” Your head leaned closer to him as you ranted in his face.
“How can you be so stupid? You’re pissed because of the slightest bit of attention I gave to the bystanders? Because I entertained them for a little? How do expect me to feel about you sneaking off into the forest with a guy who’s been in love with you for years?”
Your mouth remained open until you swallowed harshly to allow yourself to speak, “Nothing is happening between me and Neïtan. He knows about us,”
Jake threw his head up, turning his back to you. His body remained still and he just shook his head. Your head fell as you could sense his disappointment in you all the way from where you were. You stared at the ground and played with your fingers.
When he finally turned around, he slowly walked towards you but not coming closer than 3 feet to you. His hands were still on his hips, and he looked down at you.
“I waited for so long to get you to open up, and you let him in so quickly...I don’t care that you sneaked off with him, it doesn't matter. I just don’t understand why it took you so long with me.”
“I didn't let him in!” You yelled at him and let your tears fall on your cheeks. “We didn’t even have the chance to converse about anything else before he told me that he knew about us. He had figured it out. The worst part is that he apologized for pushing his feelings on me. He apologized. After all these years of not giving him a clear answer, he’s the one that feels sorry, and I am an awful person for making him feel that way.”
You breathed harshly before continuing, “I cannot get anything right with anyone. I have never allowed anyone to get so close to me besides you. Never. That is why it took so long. Because I don’t know how to control my feelings and because I’m scared. Now you’re mad at me, Neïtan is mad at me, who knows how my dad will react when he finds out about this,” You pointed between you two and you lowered your voice down to a whisper.
Jake fell down on his knees and wrapped his arms around your torso. Your arms were still crossed in front of your chest and you leaned your cheek on the side of his head. Your cries were reduced to sniffles. He backed up, his hands on your hips and he was looking up at you.
“You got everything right with me, bunny. There is nothing wrong with not understanding your feelings, nobody does. It’s not your place to understand how love works. It is my duty to show you, and I apologize for not being diligent enough with you,” You raised your hand up and grabbed a strand that had fallen loose from his braids. You played with it as you nodded at his words.
“I don’t like this. Us fighting,” Jake smiled at you and got up, pulling you up with him.
“Neither do I, bunny,” He leaned down and rubbed his nose with yours. He paused for a moment, embracing the silence before interrupting it.
“I see you,” He spoke softly but you were so close you heard him loud and clear. You smiled at his words and reiterated, “I see you, Jake” He leaned in and kissed your lips. He placed his hands at the back of your head, pulling you closer to him. You moved your lips with his, caressing the sides of his neck.
When you backed up, you looked at him and frowned,
“What’s wrong, bun?” He held your hands in his and looked into your eyes.
“Do you think there is still food at the party?” You asked and as if your stomach was in sync with your words, it rumbled.
Jake laughed loudly and said, “Yeah, cmon!” You both walked towards the hub, hand in hand and luckily for you, the snack bar was still plentiful.
