This is quite random sorry but has Dick ever acknowledge (or as close to it) that a lot of things that Bruce did to him are abusive? (this is for a fic I’m trying to write)
Yes and no!
Dick knows Bruce is an assholes and WILL yell at him to stop being an asshole, or at least he used to. Dick would call him out on his BS and wouldn't let him get away with a lot of things, but this was once upon a time, before they rebooted everything and erased decades of character development. The closest he gets to that post reboot is after Forever Evil - everyone thinks Dick is dead, and Bruce wants people to keep thinking that, hence he forces Dick to join Spiral and become Agent 37.
Dick is, as you can imagine, not thrilled. He yells and fights and Bruce beats the everloving shit out of him in a very upsetting sequence, where Dick is half naked and Bruce is wearing most of his gear while he keeps hitting him to the point of leaving him bleeding on the floor of the Batcave.
Tumblr media
Dick begs and tries to appeal to everything he can including the "things can never be the same between us after this", to which Bruce essentially replies that it's a sacrifice he's willing to make. Ha. I say that this is especially upsetting because Dick went through a horribly traumatic experience during the events of Forever Evil, in which among other things he was tortured by Thomas Wayne Jr AKA Owlman, who wanted to turn Dick into his own sidekick after losing his Talon. The way Bruce beats and humiliates Dick is drawn in a way which creates a clear parallel between Thomas and Bruce's actions towards Dick, in a way that suggests they're "not that different after all", but this narratively goes nowhere and I don't get why they fuck they even came up with that. But anyway.
All of this gets forgotten soon enough. Despite his own warnings Dick forgives Bruce after a very short time, pines for home and tries to communicate with Bruce in any way he can because he "misses his dad", which to be honest made my guts churn and my bile rise after Bruce nearly beat him comatose. Essentially the story forgets Bruce did all of that and so does Dick, but for the brief time Dick was allowed to be aware of it and angry about it, he was indeed aware that he was being abused even if he never used the word abuse.
This is the case for lots of stories in which similar instances happen, as I mentioned before especially pre-reboot. Dick does call Bruce out on his bullshit - especially if Bruce is being an abusive asshole to someone else, since Dick is way more prone to defend other people than he is to defend himself, like here
Tumblr media
or here
Tumblr media
But despite being obviously aware that there are issues in the way Bruce does things, to put it mildly, he never uses the word "abuse" (which is sort of a prohibited word for DC standards, kind of like "rape". They're way more likely to say non consensual than rape because it's a less upsetting word apparently).
There is an instance of this post reboot, and it's during a conversation Dick has with Tim. I believe it happens in the Pride comics of 2022, but I don't have the panels on hand at the moment. Basically Tim asks for advice on how to please Bruce, being the man demanding and prone to bad moods, and Dick flat out replies "I spent a very big part of my life trying to please him, and I left when I realized it was impossible" which to me is so interesting since it's the textbook reaction of a former Golden Child who fell from grace and became a Scapegoat (please note that tumblr's definition of Golden Child is completely arbitrary; golden child doesn't mean "good kid", it means a child who the parent holds to the highest standards, on which there are the biggest expectations and the strongest pressure regarding everything the child does. Sometimes a parent lives vicariously through them and perceives them as an extension of themselves, but not necessarily. If you watched Encanto, Isabella is the Golden Child of the family).
Something similar happens during Nightwing's run from the 90s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dick lives in Bludhaven and at this point he's gone essentially no-contact with Bruce. Tim, being the new Golden Child, is trying to reel Dick back into the toxic dynamic because he genuinely thinks it's going to be good for both Dick and Bruce.
I'm pointing this out not to fault Tim in any way, he's just a kid what does he know, but to show you that indeed yes, Dick is aware that he's been abused otherwise he wouldn't have left, he wouldn't be on a no talking basis with his parental figure, and he wouldn't reply to Tim that he spent so much time of his life deluding himself into thinking that Batman actually needed him. Of course this also goes nowhere and their relationship isn't allowed to grow or heal (things are just conveniently forgotten after a while), but as I mentioned, Dick knows what's up.
That being said, I believe it's also worth noting that many many times Bruce abuses the fuck out of Dick and Dick doesn't really acknowledge it, just takes it. Sometimes he doesn't have the spoons to fight back, sometimes he thinks he deserves it, sometimes he just doesn't know how to react because Bruce strikes like an unprovoked viper (this happens especially when Dick was still a kid but already a Titan). A very good example of this is what happens after Jason's death.
Bruce doesn't tell Dick that Jason died. When Alfred offers to let him know, Bruce says "I will handle it", and he doesn't. Then there's Jason's funeral and Bruce doesn't tell Dick about it, again Alfred offers to inform him, Bruce says he will handle it. He doesn't.
Tumblr media
Eventually Dick finds out for collateral reasons and has an emotional breakdown in front of the other Titans, which are powerless to help him. For reference, this is how he reacts when he has definitive proof that the boy is undoubtedly gone, if there was any doubt that Dick did care about Jason.
Tumblr media
So Dick goes to the grave with Kory but then decided to confront Bruce alone, and Bruce, in the abusive feat of the century, blames Dick for not having showed up to Jason's funeral, despite having refused to 1: tell him about Jason's death AT ALL, and 2: refused TWICE when Alfred very gently suggested to inform Dick.
Dick of course argues that he didn't know anything, and so Bruce reacts by gaslighting him, telling him they he never cared about Jason and in fact he was angry that Bruce adopted Jason and not him. Which is not true, Dick just wanted to know WHY Bruce adopted Jason and hot him. Oh and also punches him in the face when Dick tries to argue that Jason was an untrained kid. Please note that when all of this happens, Dick is hurt and can barely stand on his feet, having one of his legs in a cast.
Tumblr media
Cherry on top, Bruce explicitly saying that he never should have had a partner and never will again, essentially "our partnership up to this point meant nothing".
In this instance Dick is too neck-deep in his own self guilt to see that he's been through a sequence of extremely abusive behavior, and never really faults Bruce for that, using the easy-coming rationalization that Bruce was in pain, suffering for Jason's death, couldn't see reason etc etc (quick PSA: someone suffering isn't entitled to abuse and gaslight anyone. And even if we really want to enable Bruce cut Bruce some slack because he was grieving, it doesn't make his behavior any less abusive. Regardless of the reasons why, the way he acts here is very damaging towards Dick who in turn did nothing to deserve it, and is grieving Jason too).
See, the problem with Dick and Bruce is the sysyphean nature of comicbooks. Dick is doomed to be the original Golden Child who falls from grace, becomes the Scapegoat, but ultimately can never be completely free of the clutches of the relationship he has and had with Bruce, for better or worse. And since he can't ever truly get out and can't ever completely be independent, the abuse end up getting downplayed. If Dick never truly gets away from Bruce it's because it's not that bad, isn't it? Nay, it's because Dick cant. He is quite literally not allowed to, same as Bruce is not allowed to truly grow from his mistakes and learn to treat his former partner, sort-of-child and dear friend with the respect and love he actually feels for him, because despite all of this and because this is fiction, Bruce does love Dick more than it can be put into words and would set the world on fire for him. But, alas, he also is doomed to keep treating Dick like shit and never really learn from his mistakes.
So again, the answer to your question is yes and no. Dick is aware of how much of a difficult person Bruce is. He's aware of the domineering aspects of his personality. But he will ultimately brush it off in the name of the good that there is and there was between them, and he will keep answering Batman's call every time, because he's not allowed to ever truly grow apart from him. It doesn't matter how much he gets angry and how much Bruce hurts him, they're indissolubly tied in this dynamic and unless there is a huge shift in the way DC execs handle things, I don't see how this dynamic can change in the foreseeable future. Sadly enough, because I'd really like to see something new.

could you do some make-out session headcanons with Camilo from Encanto?
:D yeah!!
Camilo Making-out Headcanons
he's a switch for sure, just saying
but he LOVES when you play with his hair when you guys are making out
he likes it when you're on top of him when making-out, why? it just gets him more in the mood and so he can say "you look like an angel from above"
he kisses your neck a lot, its rare for him to leave hickeys since he doesn't want anyone to see them and you get in trouble by your family-
your make-out sessions usually are in his or your bedroom when you guys are hanging out or just visiting, but, you guys did make-out in a public bathroom due to tension
he loves to rub your upper thigh when hes making-out with you
hes not one to say it but my god, does he love it when you silently groan when hes kissing your neck
you two have a make-out session two or three times every 1-2 weeks (all i could think of, i might make a short story of Camilo soon though, so stay on the look out for that ^^)

・ 。゚☆° *.Hekate(100)・ 。゚☆° *.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hekate, the triple moon goddess. I can't think of a name that's more badass than that 😭. This was a lovely request made by @moonpluto . Hekate is the goddess of magic and mediumship, so my theory is that her asteroid talks about your spiritual gifts. I will be interpreting this through the houses by using tarotstrology, a concept that I got from @taisoleil.
If you'd like to purchase a personal paid reading or reiki service from me, then you can click here to book 🌌.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First House
Natives with Hekate in their first House could have very strong clairaudient abilities or are just extremely sensitive about they hear. This asteroid indicates a long journey of struggling to accept who they are and being able to see the good within themselves. I feel like these individuals are powerfully gifted with psychic abilities, but don't want them and have tried to walk away from those parts about themselves and their purpose, multiple times. Their purpose could include helping the world in some way but they get overwhelmed by the responsibility and feel singled out on why it has to specifically be them to fulfill this role. They channel stuff with ease but could purposely ignore their intuition, guidance that they literally hear from their guides, or any other outside voices in order to keep their peace. It's like they're scared of their own power.
Second House
Hekate in the second House could indicate a high sensitivity to what you feel, acute clairsentience. It's imperative for these individuals to energetically cleanse themselves often and to seek new atmospheres. They don't do well in old houses (especially haunted ones),  thrifted objects, old habits, or anything old or used stuff in general because they can easily pick up what took place which could either be really good or really bad. Having short-term homes, meeting new people, and trying new things is what makes people with this placement thrive in life. Sacrificing and starting over is something that they probably experienced a lot in this lifetime but eventually accepted and used to their advantage. They could have introverted personalities and are easily drained around crowded people and spots. This could also mean probably preferring to not have a cluttered home and loathe the idea of hoarding anything. They could be pushed to learn different protective methods like cord cutting rituals.
Third House
People with Hekate in their third House could be excellent prophets. They're very skilled at guessing games, finishing other people's sentences, and great at foretelling the future but extremely spot on with predicting someone's downfall. Their vibe kind of reminds of the stereotypes about black cats and Bruno from Encanto. They could be accused of hexing or throwing evil eye at others, or could just be seen as someone who brings bad luck because of how they warn others about something that could happen. These are very misunderstood individuals because their help is seen as someone else's demise when really you people are saving lives. You could often have people apologizing to you later in life because I'm picking up scenarios where you're always the go-to person for advice but people end up getting mad at what you tell them, and if you guys are readers then I can definitely see people accusing you of being a fraud or a liar only to find out that you were right about something all along. The powerful thing about your gift, is your honesty, and that's what scares people. You may have to learn to only warn the people that are mature enough to hear what you have to say.
Fourth House
Natives with the fourth house Hekate placement are talented alchemists and manifestors. I keep picking up the fact that energy can be created but not destroyed. These people are always able to turn destruction and nothingness into something amazing. They're excellent at spell-work (jars, candles, oils, etc) are not the type to follow traditional methods because they're able to succeed regardless of what they do or don't have. They could be heavily into new age spirituality and are always into experimenting with new ways and methods to practice it. I feel like they will, if not already, become widely accepted mentors. They're able to introduce spirituality and the occult in a way that makes people feel welcome, easier to understand, and open to accepting it. Even though they're not traditionalists, they value the importance of still knowing the history and reasoning behind stuff while also still giving it respect. Because of their intellect, they're able to convince or convey their point to those who would typically oppose their beliefs (whether it be traditional spiritualists/occultists, agnostics, or scientists). Do not underestimate these individuals because they know their stuff and will argue you down.
Fifth House
Hekate in the fifth house could indicate helping others heal their childhood trauma. You could possibly trigger deja vu or nostalgia in people, but you're able to sit down with them and help sort out their feelings regarding the past and how to let them go. I feel like this is a combination of clairvoyance and clairsentience because I'm getting that how you connect with people is like astral projecting into their younger years and pinpointing when and what started the problem and knowing exactly how they feel to where you sympathize with them and are able to give them the precise guidance that they need.
Sixth House
The sixth house containing Hekate could indicate being really in tune with your higher self and helping others do the same. This looks like shifting people out of a materialistic mindset. I feel like you're able to persuade people into dropping superficial facades if they have one. You reveal to others what their true selves consists of and are able to help them de-program any values that they've learned that's holding them back. You trigger people to make changes in their lives instead of being stubborn with not growing their self-awareness or how they view themselves. They could have a special connection with animals or this can also be interpreted as being able to "tame the beast" within others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seventh House
The spiritual gifts of people with the 7h hekate placement, involve mending others trust issues and willingness to be open to love and to receive help. You guys could have healing hands because I'm getting that y'all could really excel in being reiki practitioners. You're able to soothe others with your physical touch (people could love your hugs). You could attract partners that are closed off or have something about themselves that make you want to help them, but this could end up with you possibly living vicariously through them by wanting to fix everything that they're going through.
Eighth House
Natives with Hekate in their eighth house have powerful emotions. When people do you wrong, you want them to burn. I feel like you guys are able to curse others by what you're feeling, or it's kind of like, the pain that's inflicted on you gets returned to the sender, but worse. When people betray you, it's like they're digging their own graves because the karma that they get manifests as mayhem in their lives. This could also indicate being more on the shadow worker side, healing others with darkness, instead of light.
Ninth House
Natives with Hekate in their Ninth house could be great at telepathy, but most importantly, communicating with the other side as well as receiving messages from the spiritual realm. Your most dominant Clair is clear knowing. Individuals with this placement could have pivotal roles in channeling messages for the collective, but could have difficulty with channeling for themselves. It seems as if they're too knowledgeable with everything to the point where their spiritual team blocks them on purpose from knowing too much about their own future.
Tenth House
People with Hekate in the Tenth house could have a strong purpose with healing, mediumship, and divination. (Literally all three) These people are seen as supernatural with their gifts and could literally have a famous or at least very well known reputation for their abilities. These individuals may have started from nothing and experienced a lot of losses and betrayal in order to build their way to the top and share their wisdom with others. They could have had to pull themselves out of darkness and anguish about their existence in order to become a light for others to show the way, meaning that they started off as shadow workers before the become light workers.
Eleventh House
This is interesting. I'm getting that Hekate in the 11th house could indicate living a long life because your gifts get better with time. You guys could also look very youthful as you age. I'm picking up this scenario where you guys will be known as the medicine person in your community. Someone that's well known, loved, and sought out for your metaphysical and holistic methods. You guys are gifted with utilizing different herbs and other natural ingredients to help cure sicknesses. There's also something about your smile that positively changes something within other people. People could see you as an earth angel, which makes sense with your talents regarding natural remedies.
Twelfth House
People with Hekate in their Twelfth house could indicate having access to rare and ancient knowledge about spirituality and the occult, you guys may even have this knowledge passed down in your family. You guys could seem "two-faced", you keep your interest and knowledge about this field to yourself and you're very discreet about your practices. Your dreams may also play a huge part in how you pick up information that most people don't know about or try to keep hidden.

HEY HEY HEY HEY HEYYYYY
ok i wanna do sum short if request are closed please ignore :)
King Ghidorah x human! reader who can hear far away kinda like dolores from encanto? One-shot or HC what ever you prefer 🙃
“Tonight. He wants 5 babies.” -Dolores
More than happy to oblige, Anon! Not a lot of King Ghidorah HCs around, so I suppose I got to support what I can lol. Had to make it short because TUMBLR
Ah, King Ghidorah, my long lost love. The False King, Destroyer of Worlds, Monster Zero, the Death Song of Three Storms… ends up with a human mate. Quite unexpected, very unexpected. The mere thought of Ghidorah wooing a human to become his mate was just absurd to Monarch scientists: who was this person, why did they become Ghidorah’s mate, how did they become Ghidorah’s mate?! All these unanswered questions, and they definitely weren’t going to be able to grab answers from the walking hurricane himself, or more specifically, the heads.
With having a human as his mate, Ghidorah has to be careful, ungodly amounts of careful, but if they possess the unique ability to be able to hear noises from leagues away? Ichi is surprised the human hasn’t gone insane from all of the over stimulants, and is genuinely worried about their health because of this power.
Ichi is the head that took the longest to warm up to, but he is the head that cares the most about the well-being of his mate. Whenever he could, Ichi would lean down, tenderly nudging his mate with concern practically brimming from his golden gates; his tongue would flick out, grazing over his mate, speaking through his actions as he cannot convey words. If Nii or San, specifically Nii, attempt to do any sort of skit in an attempt to irritate or get a reaction from their shared mate, Ichi would be the one to harshly bite into one of their horns, yanking them up and emitting warning growls from his throat as a vague threat should they continue to pester their S/O.
God, Ichi would be borderline trying to make as little noise as possible (for a god damn Kaiju) for his S/O’s sake. I imagine with that sort of hearing, you could accidentally burst your eardrums, as to hear that far, you gotta learn to heighten your hearing to travel across that distance; one wrong step, and you could have a ruptured ear. Ichi would piece that together pretty quickly, and just… try to tell his other heads to shut it. Minimal blinking, minimal breathing, minimal everything in general. He just wants his S/O to be comfortable.
Then, there’s Nii. Oh, my sweet lovable Nii. Ever the aggressor and one to cause chaos, he’d be absolutely overbearing to where he’d be causing so much noise in an attempt to help his S/O. He’d blow up at Ichi or San for the smallest of things - they’re being too loud, so he’d attempt to bully them into shutting up, then start a fight with Ichi and that’s a whole clownfest in itself. Nii would be the head that took the second longest to warm up to his new S/O, as he isn’t as highly guarded as Ichi is, but it’s still quite the accomplishment to be able to reign Nii in because of his nature as a whole.
God, his S/O has him wrapped around their tiny fingers. Would do absolutely anything for them… then get into fights over the heads about it. Through their shared mental connection, he recommends the idea of ear muffs and how they should grab some immediately, right now, and then try to tug the body to the nearest store. He’s trying, he really is, but he doesn’t really realize his actions cause more harm than good… it’s the thoughts that count, right?
San is the easiest to warm up to, due to his quite jolly nature and interest in humans as a whole. He’d find it quite curious about his mate’s hearing abilities, always wondering, what can they hear? Can they hear Godzilla snoring in the ocean? He has to know! So he does bug his S/O more often than not, he doesn’t mean to cause any harm! He’s just a curious noodle, a very curious one indeed.
Once Ichi and Nii explain the situation, he does feel quite guilty. After all, he’d feel as though he’s been contributing to the strain on his S/O, when he really didn’t mean to. He’d try his best to be more quiet, but he does slip up quite often. Please don’t blame him, he’s trying.

And why exactly Luminous Luisa decided to smash the old hag?
Many reasons.
Long story short, his treatment of herself and the rest of her family, in particular her sisters.
I won’t discuss the obvious things - Isabela being giftless, Bruno leaving, etc.
With herself, Luisa was the perfect golden child. She was built up to be as powerful as goddess, she always had to be strong and unaffected, while also remaining in complete control of her gift and emotions.
Sometimes she had to force herself into certain feelings for particular weather patterns that the town relied on (such as good weather for crops). She would have to find ways to make herself feel whatever was needed, not that she could ever let said feelings show - she had to appear unaffected, even in her emotions. To the point, she was viewed as just controlling the weather; the townspeople have mostly forgotten it is attached to her emotions and not something she just clicks her fingers for.
Having to always be strong also meant she’s never seen a doctor and has never been healed by Mirabel - she has snuck some of Mirabel’s cooking at night, but she doesn’t know what does what: sometimes she guesses right, most she doesn’t. She just been left to be sick or injured and just has to force herself work and smile through it. Such things can pile up and make her feel worse.
Mirabel has basically been feeding an entire town since her fifth birthday, being the superior medical professional in Encanto. Pedro made the decision that most of the food should just be made by Mirabel, as her gift will keep everyone healthy and it’ll be more effective.
Subsequently, she is ridiculously overworked. Do remember that she is still attending school throughout this and has the highest grades of her family (second only to Dolores). She has never received any kind of break, not even her birthday or family occasion, because Pedro does not want anyone to lose someone like he lost his Alma. Pedro often remakes that she’s lucky she still gets sleep and frequently calls her a failure/useless. The first time he did so was after a funeral - the person had been come down with a sickness - gesturing to the coffin and the heartbroken family over the grave.
Then, of course, there is her sensitive nature and squeamishness. Which is the only reason she’s never managed to succeed Luisa in his affections. He’s used the same technique as he does in Imperfect, forcing Mirabel to see severe injuries stupidly young, albeit not as often (his main focus was Luisa here, once he gave up on Mirabel a few months after her birthday). He is fairly rough with her and has definitely caused minor injuries, but nothing to the extent of Fracture.
It’s him hitting Mirabel (in front of Luisa and Isabela, just after their reconciliation moment) that officially makes Luisa snap. The rest was just boiling away over time and she would have done so eventually anyways.

Hello! This was into response about someone complaining about Hazbin Hotels (admittedly) pretty bad pacing so strap in for 8 paragraphs outlining the history of television and how Hazbin hotel’s terrible pacing fits into this.
So here’s a little (unneeded but still fun) history of television. So as we transitioned from the Radio Era a full season was 39 weeks (3 quarters of a year) and was preformed live, during the rest of the year that time slot would be designated for replacement shows because show hosts have to vacation at some point in their lives.
Anyways due to primitive recording techniques making reruns virtually impossible, the industry standard of replacement shows continued into television. Although finally by mid-fifties reruns were more possible and commonplace. From this point on the number of episodes began to decline, by the late 60’s the 46 episode standard season became 26 instead. (1ep per week is half the year meaning reruns for the other half so that every show could be repeated once a lot easier than the longer seasons of the past )
Essentially broadcast networks wanted more bang for their buck
Then came the miniseries format in the 70’s. Usually about 13 episodes telling stories week to week that were self contained (Think Phineas and Ferb, the episodes have no impact on each other) Also 13 is half of what a normal season was so networks would use this if a project was on the edge of cancellation.
Also in the 70’s networks would cancel shows mid year (now it’s after the November sweeps) so they’d order shows in 12 episode groups and if the ratings weren’t good enough a new one would replace it in January.
By the 90’s it kept getting shorter ordering shows in either 8, 16, or 24 episode seasons. For almost all new shows that a network isn’t sure about they give 8 episodes to test out the waters and see how fans react and that’s what I believe Amazon Prime did for Hazbin Hotel.
And so after an entire history lesson of television, let’s talk about Hazbin Hotel.
So let’s get one thing straight, yeah the pacing of HH is not great and definitely could be improved upon. From what it looks like, we’re supposedly watching a show that has a time span of about 6 months in between 8 episodes which gives no time to develop almost anything but plot relevant to the extermination. However like I just spent the past 4 paragraphs leading up to, season’s episodes are only getting shorter and shorter, not to mention that it’s up to the networks to tell the show how many episodes it’s going to be getting. So with 8 episodes to tell decades worth of planning a world out for Hazbin Hotel I’m sure that’s a little hard, especially with all of the characters that we love and want screen time for (remember how everyone was mad at Encanto for the pacing as well? The plot was there but the movie was too short for the amount of characters and stories that they wanted to tell)
Additionally it’s been said that the team didn’t know that the show was getting a second season until half way through production (I don’t have any sources to back this one up but I’ve heard it going around a few places) so it seems like this season was planned like it was the only season we would be getting which would explain why everything is so fast paced.
Hopefully with that second season (and maybe more) they will feel more fluid and organic but for now we need to understand that this is just the first season and that the rough start shouldn’t be entirely on the blame of the show itself. If your mad about something sure, I’m down to put the blame on those responsible- but I think instead of being mad at the show, or saying “I’m disappointed in the show” we should shift the blame onto the networks who put such small episode constraints on not just Hazbin hotel- but all new shows! Sure if you have a well thought out story that you can tell in 8 episodes then that’s great! But too many shows are forced to rush through their plot because of greedy networks enforcing restraints on the creativity of the shows their hosting

I just realized that I have never actually shared the end result of my tattoo. I love it every day a little bit more, least of all because it's actually got some hidden meanings and nods to some important things in my life. It got a bit long (and pretty emotional, oh my) so more under the cut if you wanna know
The colors, rather, the brush strokes in the background. Red, blue, purple and orange. If you know me, you know that I am a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fan. But that is not a big enough word tbh. The turtles have accompanied me all my life. My first pajama was turtles themed, I wanted to learn to ride a skateboard because of Mikey pretty much all my teen years. But most importantly, and most emotionally for me, I distinctly remember watching a turtles episode from the 1987 cartoon at a friend's house while my mother attended my father's funeral. I don't remember much of that time, only being 5 years old, but I remember crouching behind a sofa and looking over the back of it to watch the turtles have adventures. Maybe that's where it really started, who knows. I just know that these funky guys mean a lot to me for reasons I might not even be able to explain to myself properly. These colors bring me joy, so they had to be there.
And then, the sunflower. I wanted that there because of Mob Psycho 100, an anime that has not just changed the way I look at the world and at myself. I am the protagonist of my own life. My life is my own. If I can change then others can change too. It's easy to want to be easily palatable (is that the word?) for others, to get their approval, to get them to like you. It's taken me some odd 34 years to realize that I only have to be palatable for myself. I have to look in the mirror and see someone that I can get behind, a person worthy of love and friendship and I am worthy of it, everyone is worthy of it no matter who you are, how you look or what you can do. You are worthy already by just being you and even if you aren't quite there yet you are still worthy. We are all worthy of being happy. I am allowed to be silly and cringe and not act like my age. I live my life the way I want.
Because I am the protagonist of my own life and if I don't write the story, who will?
The last one is the crows feather with the green accents. This is a bit of an obscure one. As some of you know, I have written fanfiction for years. It got me through some tough times during high school. Then adult life hit and I stopped. I stopped writing my original stories too. I can't even say why it just felt like a chore, probably because I got so discouraged with my own skills and my own expectations for myself. Then I slowly got back into it, writing a real short one shot for Monkie Kid and realizing that I have missed it quote a lot. And then Encanto came along. This movie that has inspired me so much that it felt like I suddenly couldn't stop writing even if I wanted to.
And then I got the idea for "A place for crows" and the rest is history I guess? The love and encouragement I received where phenomenal. That story made me fall in love with story telling again, it consumed me for pretty much a complete year. And it brought some of the most wonderful people, beloved friends from all over the world, into my life. I am so greatful to this Fandom, to this story, or rather the things this story has brought into my life.
So the feather symbolized my love for writing and just fandom spaces in general, this wonderful microcosmos I can call home.
The brushes and pencil are a given, my love for art and drawing which have also been big factors in rediscovering myself
This text got long, I just typed it down without pausing and I'm not gonna go over it again for spelling or something like that. Take it as it came out of me, with all my love and emotional bloodletting.
Love you all.

Noeluno 💚✨
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently. As a lot of you have probably seen, I’ve been pretty indecisive and keep changing Noelle’s backstory. And I’ve realised for me none of her stories feel right and I want to return more to the self ship side of things. A lot of the little head canons and art pieces you see are based on daydreams of myself and Bruno. I created Noelle to be able to show these moments to the world, but mainly for myself. And then I tried to give her a back story to keep up, but it never seemed to fit. It meant changing her completely from myself.
So I’m keeping it much more simple. 😍
Tumblr media
Art by my wonderful friend NS artwork who has literally been bringing my head Bruno to life 💚✨
8 years into Bruno’s self exile in the walls, a bubbly English girl called Noelle randomly appears to him one day. There’s not necessarily an explanation other than perhaps magic or the universe itself made it so. At first there’s shock, confusion and I thought maybe it would be fun to add an initial language barrier. These moments keep randomly happening over the next few weeks and neither understand how or why. At first they both believe they’re just imagining things or dreaming - Bruno comes to the conclusion that he must have finally gone mad 🤣 But as time goes on these moments become stronger and more prolonged. They both begin to fall in love, and Noelle begins to teach herself Spanish in order to understand Bruno (still undecided for this part, I watched love actually and felt inspired to add this in 😍). They discover that each other are both real people and learn to be able to control their connections. At some point Bruno is able to gain the confidence to cross into Noelle’s world for short periods of time, especially her home in the woods.

Art again by NS artwork 💚
Around year 9 of Bruno being in the walls they get married - a simple ceremony with the rats as their witness and a very old priest 🤣 Once Bruno is reunited with the family they do eventually renew their vows at the church and throw a celebration for everybody!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Art pieces above by @glendybluebird & @giulscomix 😍💚✨
When Bruno is reunited with his family there is a period of time where Noelle isn’t able to connect. He trusts she will be back one day. And in the mean time he tries to open up to his family about her, but they assume he just imagined her to cope with living in the walls. A few months after the events of the film she manages to reconnect, and Bruno introduces her to a very shocked family! 🤣 She is able to find a way to stay with Bruno and the family.
Below are some art pieces that sum up their relationship and the things they like to do together 🥹💚✨A lot of my future art pieces will be showing post wall moments and their life in the Encanto. The time where Bruno has finally achieved the happiness of being back with his family and is getting all the love and happiness he deserves 😍✨

Please let us know if you solve this mystery!
OK! It’s the end of the year so let me compile everything I was able to come up with (with the help of everyone I dragged into this–you know who you are and thank you and I’m sorry).
To anyone who’s just seeing this and doesn’t have context, in November, right before the movie Wish came out, I made a longish post questioning who Allison Moore was (which, incidentally, is the first post that comes up when you Google “Allison Moore Disney”).
The reason I was curious about who this random writer is is because she’s credited as one of the co-writers of Wish, Disney’s 100th Anniversary Feature Film BUT she has no obvious experience writing for animation, children, or fantasy when everyone else on the main team has credits on stuff like Frozen and Encanto. I thought it was bizarre that there would be someone so green on a project so big so I went digging.
Here’s what I learned:
(1) Moore wasn’t originally announced as being attached to the project. Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Fawn Veersunthorn were all mentioned when the project was officially announced in Sept 2022 (for example). Moore was not. And you’d think they’d mention the *co-writer*, right? You don’t start to see her name until a year later in Sept 2023 when the trailer dropped (for example). So it seems like she was brought onto the project later. Of course, this could just be a normal quirk of the industry or something I’m misinterpreting, but I think it’s worth mentioning.
(2) Moore seems to have a lot more credits in stage writing than she does in screenwriting. I wasn’t able to 100% confirm it until recently (I’ll get to that in a second) but she’s written a bunch of plays and it seems like this is where she has most of her bona fides.
“Allison is the recipient of two Jerome Fellowships, two McKnight Advancement Grants and the Bush Artist Fellowship.”
That sounds fancy. But it still doesn’t say “Top Choice for Disney Anniversary Movie” to me. That’s not a statement on writing quality. I haven’t read/seen any of her plays. It’s about the subject matter. Look at some of these synopses:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
None of that really screams Disney. Which isn’t to say people can’t have range. George Miller wrote all the Mad Maxes but also Babe and both Happy Feet. But if I was hiring someone for a really big project, I wouldn’t want that project to be their first attempt at expanding into that genre.
(3) This isn’t actually inherently important but she was on an episode of Nailed it. That’s where this picture comes from:
Tumblr media
She won the first round and the game ended in a three way tie for the first time in the show’s history.
The only reason this is noteworthy in the larger scale of things is that, until very recently, this was one of only two places online you could see Allison Moore talking. The other is this very short interview on the red carpet during the premiere.
youtube
There’s nothing in that interview that explains anything. It’s mainly her talking about how it was fun working on the movie and how good the movie is.
Honestly, good for her for not being Extremely Online, but it really felt like I could get a bit of a handle on everyone else who’d worked on this project in a high profile way but not her. Which is part of why I started down this rabbit hole to begin with. There was nothing to show where she might have had a connection or an interest or anything that would connect the dots.
For reference, Fawn (who was one of the Directors and story writers) has the kind of resume that I was expecting Moore to have when I initially Googled her:
Tumblr media
Smaller jobs on other kids/animated movies (Hop, The Lorax, Despicable Me 2), some storyboard or art work on other Disney stuff (Frozen, Moana, Zootopia, Ralph), and then a big break (Raya and Wish). Based on my understanding of the industry (and I know a fair bit because it’s one I’m interested in professionally) that’s a very typical track to get to the writing side of animation.
A couple of people speculated that Moore got onto the project in a mentorship capacity. Now, I’m a Black woman who writes fiction professionally when I’m not on this hellsite (affectionate) with the rest of y’all. That means I have firsthand experience with what mentorship looks like in writing–both official Diversity and Inclusion type mentorship and more organic “Let me take you under my wing” type mentorship. I have *never* seen anyone get a job this high profile at the jump just due to mentorship alone. Going from zero to Disney’s 100th anniversary is kinda insane. This wasn’t some B project or something. It was a Big Deal Project. And this is Disney so they could have hired basically anyone they wanted. So you have to assume this was an active decision someone made and not just a thing that happened for lack of options. But in all my searching, Moore wasn’t mentioned except to just say she wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Lee. It was just the baking show and the Youtube clip.
Until today.
(4) I’m going to preface this by saying this doesn’t actually answer the question in a big AHA! way, but it is the only interview I’ve seen about Wish from Moore besides the red carpet clip.
On December 15th, Moore gave this interview with the San Antonio Current.
I stumbled across it while searching for a different piece of information and eagerly clicked to see what she had to say after three weeks of silence after the movie dropped on November 22.
Here are some highlights:
-In high school she was a theater kid and thought she wanted to pursue acting.
-I college she did playwriting and eventually she got her MFA from Iowa (which has a weirdly great MFA program btw, and also, this interview is how I confirmed she was the playwright Allison).
-When she started on the theater track at her college, she told them she was a playwright so she could study that too even though she’d never written a play before. So it sounds like Wish isn’t the first time she’s just jumped into a new thing without experience. You have to respect the hustle.
But this is the most important line in the interview because it’s like, an answer and a non-answer all in one. She’s asked, “How did you go from writing plays to writing for TV and film?”
And her answer is, “I had a whole career writing for theater, and then when my son was born, I realized I needed to make more money, so I started pitching for TV. I worked in television for about a decade. In the midst of working in TV, I continued playwriting. That's how I got on the radar at Disney.”
Which kind of sidesteps the most intriguing part of the question? Like, first of all, it’s not 100% clear if she means her playwriting or her TV writing caught Disney’s attention. I’m guessing playwriting, but I could be wrong. Secondly, who is “Disney” in this situation? A Disney recruiter? A Disney director? Did Jennifer Lee see a production of Slasher: A Horrifying comedy while passing through Texas and think, “Her. I want her to be my co-writer on this children’s film.” And what did she do to impress them so much that they right away put her on the the *Anniversary Project*? Like, I know I keep harping on this but I can’t stress enough how big of a deal this is. It’s hard enough to write for just your average sitcom or little movie. To just jump on something this big is baffling. I obviously don’t expect Disney to be justifying their every hiring decision publicly but, usually, when someone is doing something like this, it’s very obvious why they were chosen and, even with this sliver of explanation, it’s still frustratingly opaque. And with the strange post hoc timing of the interview (seriously, doesn’t promotion usually happen PRE movie release?) It almost reads like an interview that exists because someone realized the lack of any online presence was weird.
(5) When she was a kid, Allison Moore had a crush on Fox Robin Hood. That’s not at all important to the mystery, that’s just information she volunteered during the interview and that I’m now sharing with you. So when you search her name now, the top results are me wondering who she is, her IMDB, and her talking about how she liked Fox Robin Hood's little hat. Which isn't a LOT of information, but it’s more than we had before and that’s something.

WIP Werewolf!Clones/Encanto AU.
I got a number of requests asking about this WIP I have burning a hole in my documents. So it’s here if anyone is interested. I keep putting it off because I don’t think I have something yet. Happy reading. DM or reblog your thoughts or if you want to here me rave and rant my plot at you.
There was a heavy storm of anxiety hanging over the Fett household. Echo could feel the underlying tension throughout the house when he first stepped out of his shared room. Fives remained dead to the world, spread eagle on the bed, his soft snores making Echo smile fondly at his twin before quietly shutting their door. It was best to let his brother get all the rest that he could before the hunt tonight. The full moon marked the monthly hunt for the Fett clan. An evening sweep across their lands re-marking borders,and chasing rival clans who decided to test the boundaries of the Fett’s extensive and well established territories.
More importantly, tonight marked the first hunt for their youngest clan member, Boba. It was all the young pup could talk about for the week, shadowing their father, eldest brothers and cousins with questions, speculations and more and more questions. Echo remembered Fives’ first hunt. It was a bittersweet night for the whole clan when the eldest twin took his first strides in the hunt without his twin at his side. Echo had sat alone at the entrance of the Fett estate listening to chorused howls of his family echo across the vast landscape of their territory.
His 12 year old self had never felt so useless in his short life. To be a “normy” in a family of werewolves, to the family of werewolves, was an aberration to everything the Fett’s were and stood for. He was a blight, a curse hanging over an esteemed house. His father never spoke of Echo’s inability to shift and he still loved and cared for him, but there were times when he would catch Jango staring at him with a look of what Echo could only describe as fear. Fear of what? The young Fett twin could not decipher for. Only that Jango seemed to hold him out at arm’s length even more now that Cody was gone…
His dear eldest brother, Cody. His father refused any talk about him since he left. For what and why? No one, but Jango knew and maybe the older of the Fett siblings and Aunt Arla. All he could remember was walking up to hear that his eldest sibling was gone. The siblings had gathered outside their father’s study for any news of their brother’s whereabouts. Echo remembers his father thundering out of his study, staring his children down and making them swear to never utter the name of their beloved brother in his house ever again.
He finds his father in his study with Boba, tucked in his lap staring down at a map spread out on their father’s conference table in his office along with Fox, Wolffe and Rex. Even after a year, Echo was still getting used to seeing Rex standing sentinel at their father’s side, still so much younger than their eldest brother- filling the void of a sibling no one dared mention in their household. Rex had seamlessly fit into their father’s most inner circle, but it had changed Echo’s favorite sibling into a colder and more distant man.
“And this is really all ours?” Boba exalts in awe of the expansive map, as their father draws his finger across the borders.
Jango’s deep laugh fills the mahogany office, “It is ad’ika. With the strength of you and your brothers, this whole territory will stay in our clan as it has for hundreds of years.” The youngest Fett’s brow furrows as he studies the map more intently and Echo only chuckles at how much his father and siblings look alike in that moment.
“That seems like a lot of work.”
“It is vod’ika.” Fox grumbles as he ruffles Boda’s curls. “That’s why we need young blood like you out there tonight to protect our home. You ready to do that, pup?”
Boba’s chest puffs up in a display meant to intimidate but only makes Echo ache at how very young his little brother is.
“I’m ready for anything.” Boba affirms confidently, which earns him approving laughs from the eldest clan members.
Echo smiles and shifts his feet from the doorway causing the wooden floors to creak. In a split second, he is faced with the stares of his father and brothers.
“Echo?” Jango calls out and beckons him into the office. The younger Fett hesitates before entering the room. He’s never felt comfortable or welcome in this space - the War Room - as his brothers liked to call it. There was something disconcerting about walking the gauntlet to his father’s large desk and being judged by the dead stares of fallen pack members. Of course, it was probably only ever Echo who felt the harsh assessing gaze of his ancestors every time he entered this room.
“You’re up early.” His father comments. “Are you doing okay, adi’ka?”
Echo holds himself at attention and nods firmly. “I’m doing just fine, buir.” He says. “I did an early morning sweep of the borderlands this morning and found some areas we should pay close attention to. I wanted to start prepping my speeder for tonight and getting my supplies together.”
“About that,” Jango shifts his eyes to his eldest son’s. “I know you have been coming along on the hunt for awhile now and staying close to Fives, but he’s going to have his hands full with Dogma, Tup, and Boba now.” Ah, yes. He had heard Fives griping about puppy sitting duty all weekend. The brothers were very familiar with taking the mantle of shepherding younger pack members during their first hunts. Father called it a rite of passage. Everyone else called it a punishment.
“I’ve talked with your brothers and we all agree that it would be best if you stay at the manor during the hunt. At least for the rest of the year.”
Echo’s inside clench with cold dread and he looks to his brothers for an explanation. He’s met with silence. Fox’s face reveals nothing, but that’s no surprise. The second eldest Fett brother could stare down a Dathomir witch and never break a sweat. Wolffe isn’t much better. Only Rex gives anything away. His eyes expressing some sign of regret.
“But,” Echo stops and attempts to collect himself. Jango has little patience for non-concise answers.
“Father, I’ve always joined the family on our hunts and you’ve never objected before.”
“That was before we had Boba to think about. With your cousins still needing guidance and looking after, we won’t be able to keep an eye on you if something happens. Clan Vizsla is already prodding our northlands and there has been rumor of a coven vampires returning to the outskirts of Mandalore.”
Vampires, Echo’s curiosity almost supplants his growing anxiety settling deep in his stomach. The young twin held a deep fascination with all supernatural beings, spending our pouring over old texts filling his mind as if he was trying to fill the blaring gap of his inability to shift.
“I can’t have your brothers focused on tracking them down if they are concerned about you.” Jango states, shifting Boba off his lap to stand. Their father has always been an imposing figure even as the signs of aging have started to show on his face.
“Just because I can’t shift doesn’t mean I’m a liability.” Echo states firmly. His father holds his gaze and the silence is deafening. There are only a few topics that up the tension in the Fett household. Echo’s inability to shift was the worst kept secret among the lycan clans, and a subject guaranteed to rankle the Fett patriarch.
“We all know that’s not true.”
Jango Fett was never one to mince his words and Echo feels like he’s been cut down in one solid punch to his chest. A hit to an open wound that will always fester and never close.
“I’m ordering you to stay home,” Jango pronounces, leaving no room for argument. “You will stay home and keep to the fences. You will not follow Fives out on the hunt and you will signal us if the manor is made vulnerable. Do I make myself clear?”
Echo bits back a cynical laugh. No one in the right mind would have the shebs to attack the Fett estate. He briefly glances at Boba who is looking at him with large unsure eyes and Echo feels even more shaken with embarrassment and shame. Shame that he has burned deep within him from the whispers and taunts dogging his footsteps whenever they deal with the other families. Echo pulls himself up to full attention and gazes past Jango’s shoulder. He can’t look at his father right now. He may break down, he may unleash all his frustration and anger, he may say something he might come to regret. Echo buries it all.
“Yes, sir.” He bites out and turns stiffly to leave the office.
“Echo…” He brushes off Rex’s hand on his shoulder. The last thing Echo needs at this moment is any comfort from his family.

SPREADING ENCANTO POSITIVITY!!!!! Are their any Encanto Blogs you would happily show appreciation for and why????? Please tell us!!!!!
I think it's a lovely idea!!! That said, I'm the worst person to ask because I don't really follow that many people, I follow blogs who reblog other Encanto blogs. But I'm still going to try.
Short list; there are more blogs and people I appreciate, but I don't have too much tiem, don't want this to be too long and I think you all already know my friends hmm
@encantoisawesome Lovely person, constantly sharing Encanto-related things, super well organized blog to easily search for each character! Also, I think we have the whole movie in screenshots thanks to them and I always find there that reference I can't find anywhere else, so thank you so much <3
@encantowishes Right now on hiatus if I'm remembering correctly, but one of my favorite blogs to find Encanto content. Besides, romantic fic with asexual Bruno? I haven't been able to read it yet because I'm too busy, but knowing it exists makes me happy uwu
@omgcheez Look. If there's new Encanto content, merchandising, comics, whatever, you'll find it here first. It's always interesting to read his headcanons and comments about the characters and on top of that he makes cute drawings.
@waitingonavision Our pancita lore master. Cute art, sweet fics, lovely person. And everything that Moon posts about Jewish Madrigals is super interesting to read.
@pepa-brainrot I can't say enough about how much I love his art style, the Madrigal look beautiful. Pepa looks gorgeous! If I am sad I look at this drawing of Pepa smiling and I feel better.
Since we are talking about her, @cloudy-encanto is Pepa herself and not just because of her incredible cosplay and the videos she makes, she is like a ray of sunshine when you talk to her. Fics, 3D art, an amazing animation she did for EBB. Just... Wow.
Are you looking for genderbend Madrigal? @firinnie got you covered. And in general super cute content <3
@unskilled-dabbler Nyda also shares a lot of content Encanto-related and she has a very nice art style, I love the way she draws Bruno!
@thecrazyashley-blog Anything I can say about her is overshadowed by the thought that she has a 300k+ word fic. I really admire her for that.
@naoko-world shares Jared Bush's tweets when he does Q&A's and I also like that she post the merch she buys (official or from artists), so I've discovered things I didn't know I needed, too bad about the price and shipping every time lol
Uuuh, okay, I've spent too much time on this and I have to go now. I may extend the list in the future if I have time, sorry......
Super quick round for people I met on instagram! @dororoxpenana Helianthus Deenah Dinarion

I might have missed a older post where you explained why, but I was wondering why you want Asha to have a different color palette for her dress, give her hair accessories and have the skirt be a different style? Like is it a more general thing that would make her design standout more?(Which I would totally understand) or is there something deeper to those design choices that I am missing?
I did make a post about it back when her design was leaked.
Just a simple "i hope this concept art gets revamped, because she looks like too much like Isabella from Encanto"
And Disney adults got mad because reads note: I somehow insisted princesses of color shouldn't wear purple or have braids
Short answer: No there's not really a deeper problematic meaning with the design, at least not to my knowledge
Longer answer: The fact so many of us thought this was concept art is an issue itself. Disney hardly, if any, put thought into this design. And I'm just tired. I hardly care for most new Disney content because of this. And that's not even going over the movie's unfinished feel

Also I wanna add that I’m not expecting a series within the next year or so. Obviously I know how long the animation process is. What’s weird is the fact nothing has been greenlit when other movies (frozen) have gotten a short only a year after release. And more shorts after that etc. if we get a series I’m predicting if it’s 3D it should take about 4 years and maybe 2 years if it’s 2D. But the thing is nothing has been announced at all. It’s literal crickets. Plus with disneys recent announcement of that primos show that got SO MUCH WRONG people are once again being like “hey if you wanted to make a show about a Latin American family that is actually respectful why not encanto?” Like disney is ur corporate brain broken because encanto is a big money maker for u!

Third part of Ride the Cyclone AU.
The game begins.
(Oh and check out my reblog for this post for Dolores’ bid to be brought back to life).
The previous part in case you need a recap.
Comments are always appreciated.
Warning, sensitive topics below, especially character death.
~~~~~~
A Little More of Me
A drumroll rang through the room.
A spotlight flickering before it finally settled on Dolores.
“Dolores Madrigal, you are first.” The blue suited man declared.
The woman froze, before barely managing to get out the small word, “Why?”
He sighed sarcastically. “Alas! if only you hadn’t burned off those three questions right at the top.”
“It’s just…” she glanced around momentarily, before setting her eyes on the closest person to her. “When you tie the room together, I think Isabela is going to seem like the natural choice for that slot!”
“What? You want me to go first? But you never want me to go first.” Isabela commented.
Dolores squeaked in delight. “Well, it’s like you always say, Isa; the oldest should go first.” She quickly pushed the woman towards the strange man. “Mr. Whatever, Isabela and I are going to trade places.”
“No trading places,” the man remarked, mocking her voice as he did.
Isabela burst into laughter, looking very smug as she walked over only for Desconocida to step in and block the path to Dolores. Any cruel remarks were quickly forgotten about as Isabela’s new focus was now getting away from this being.
A problem she and Luisa would counter by trapping the thing in the cart.
Dolores rolled her eyes and walked away, trying to recover some of her dignity.
“I am happy about that, actually,” Dolores said. “Fine, I’ll go first. I just want to say two things.” Then, she redirected her attention on the man. “I don’t know how it is in your culture, but in ours? Playing games where people’s lives are on the table? Super illegal!” She screeched. Taking a breath and smiling, she continued, “Second, I really love your suit. It really brings out your eyes.”
The lights faded and the rest of the contestants disappeared in the darkness, leaving only the spotlight on Dolores as she stepped up to where a door had appeared in the wall. After a nod from the man, she went for the doorknob. It flashed to life with her name and engraving.
“Dolores Victoria Estrada Madrigal,” the man introduced. “Born 31st August, Virgo; the practical nature. Favourite ride: the ferris wheel.”
Several shots from throughout Dolores’ life, flashed up on the door, like photographs.
“Dolores was born into what is the most respected family in all of Encanto, but she soon found herself left to linger in the shadows. While the rest of her family was heralded with praise, the only comments that came Dolores’ way were…”
Isabela and Luisa reappeared - the former was wearing a red braided wig and hat, while the latter had a beige ruana thrown over her clothes. They echoed the words of the townspeople.
“You seemed so nice.” Isabela offered, lazily.
“I never really met you, but you seemed friendly.” Luisa shrugged.
Dolores awkwardly approached them, as the strange man continued his narration, but they didn’t seem to notice her at all and eventually walked off.
She slowly realised they were being controlled again.
“That is with the exception of one group of people. The biggest achievement Dolores was to receive in her short life was her school career. If not for Encanto being such an isolated town, her ambitions and skills would have been properly recognised at some prestigious university. Instead she’ll be glorified by her teachers for years to come. High school president, straight A student. Dolores Madrigal, the most intelligent girl in town.”
The lights came back and the visuals faded, the other contestants regathering in a semi-circle a few paces behind Dolores.
She herself stood in the centre, smiling, she cleared her throat.
“Judges. Colleagues. Family. Friends. Ominous novelty salesman.” She looked back at the piece of paper in her hands and tore it in half. “I had a speech prepared for this very occasion, but I simply cannot read it.”
“How does she have a speech for this?” Camilo questioned, looking around at the others in confusion.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past her.” Luisa snarked.
“I am just going to speak from my heart,” Dolores continued. If she heard their comments, she didn’t acknowledge them. “I’ve known all of these folks since birth— oh!”
She made a turn, wanting to address her family, only to find Desconocida stood in the way.
The doll-headed girl leaned forward curiously, black eyes borrowing into Dolores’s own.
“Most of,” she amended, pushing the girl into Luisa, who freaked out. When had she gotten out of the cart? “And I love them all! I couldn’t compete against them for a chance at life.”
There was a confused noise from Camilo. “You literally spent all day at the fair telling me you would give me to Satan for free.”
Dolores abruptly shushed him. “My time, Camilo. This is my time.” She turned back to the strange man, “Look, I’ve heard enough of Tío Bruno’s rat telenovelas to get what you want us to do here. Who’s the best?” She nodded to herself. “Sure. Grades. Behaviour. Humanitarian efforts. Extracurricular activities. Musical endeavours. Being able to tell you everything about everyone in our town - quicker and more accurately than any type of record or machinery - since the age of five!”
She took a breath.
“I am the best,” she said confidently, “By any metric of society. I get that. But if that is how worth is measured, I want no part of it! Look some of us are left wing,” she lifted her left hand. “And some of us are right wing,” she lifted the other. “But the last time I checked, it takes two wings to fly!”
She flapped her arms as an example, then held them up in the air.
“We are community! We are family! We are the world!”
After her declaration, a loud buzzer noise played.
She bowed gracefully, to some silent and nonexistent applauding audience.
“Dolores Madrigal heroically concedes,” the suited man announced.
The other three Madrigals snickered, Isabela almost collapsing to the floor in peals of laughter between Camilo and Luisa. Desconocida, who had been dragged and left at the other side of the room by Luisa, simply tilted her head in confusion.
The comment seemingly smacked Dolores back to reality. “She does what?”
“I respect you taking the moral high ground.” He said, nodding gently. “Next!”
She ran over, shaking her head. “B-but I was just trying to prove to you that I’m a good person,” she insisted.
“Duly noted. Next!”
“No, no, no!” She exclaimed, desperate. To emphasise the point, she bravely snatched the metallic cone thing. She didn’t know why, she just suddenly felt compelled to. “I am urging you to make the responsible choice here for the betterment of humanity!”
12th September, 1951
“I will go with them.”
The adults turned to honestly the last person they expected in the doorway.
“Now we’re definitely not gonna be allowed to do anything fun there!” Camilo whined, flopping to the floor dramatically.
Pepa only smiled. “Oh, would you, Lolita?”
“It’s a nice offer, but don’t feel you have to, mija.” Félix said. “Bruno is already going, and I’m happy to go as well—”
“No. I will keep them out of trouble. You deserve a break.” Dolores insisted.
“What the fuck was in those chocolates?” Luisa whispered to Isabela. She glanced curiously at the box Mariano had sent for Dolores’ birthday, just in time to catch a vine trying to clumsily push one out of its container. Luisa smacked Isabela’s arm.
The vine dissipated, the chocolate going flying.
Camilo’s eyes gleamed and he chased after it, as it disappeared underneath a cabinet.
“Sobrino, don’t eat food off the floor,” Julieta chided from where she had also appeared in the room.
“Five second rule, Tía!” Camilo shrugged, his mouth half-full.
She shook her head. “What are we all gathered around in here for? I called dinner about five minutes ago and the only person who showed up was Mirabel.”
“The children want to go to the fairground,” Agustín explained, getting up. “I’ll go ask to see if she’s interested. It wouldn’t be fair to leave her here.”
“That’s not fair! Why does Mirabel get to go and I have to stay here?” Antonio asked.
“Because you aren’t tall enough for most of the rides, Toñito. There won’t be much for you to do.” Félix soothed.
“I’m basically Mirabel’s height. She’s not going to be able to ride anything either.”
“You’re too young, I’m afraid, Antonio.” Abuela reasoned, as gently but firmly as she could. “You’ll have to sit this one out. Maybe next time the fair comes by.”
As Antonio’s lip quivered, Pepa scooped him up. “Aww, don’t cry, mijo. We’ll plan something just as exciting to do here - with all your animals, who wouldn’t have been allowed in the fair anyways - that will be much better. Okay?”
The family began head towards the table, Bruno pulled Dolores aside.
“It’s very kind of you to offer to go.” He said. Then raising an eyebrow, “Especially as you told me it was ‘a waste of time’ this morning. And you’d rather do anything then have to babysit the others more than you already do. Could it be that something has changed your mind? Are you admitting you were wrong?”
“Absolutely not; I’m always right. I am just a nice person - this is what I do.”
He smirked, “Oh yes. The world needs more people like you.”
They really do.
But she’d never say it out loud.
