CHAPTER 3!!! Babysitter Maribat AU AGE Reversed Chapter 3!

Well here’s chapter three, not sure how good it is. A bit OOC here so yeah.

Selina awoke from the annoying buzzing from her cellphone resting on the night stand. It was Bruce?!? Selina immediately answered.

“Wh-THE MANSION IS IN ONE PIECE SELINA!!!!! Do you know what this means!?!?” Before the older woman could respond, Bruce interrupted her, again.

“ I can take you out on dates, I can actually focus on work without having to stress over them, I can actually feel confident walking into my home to NOT find it in pieces!!!! Selina please you must give me that lady’s number!!! Selina Love!!!” Selina was too stunned to even respond. How were you supposed to respond when the BRUCE WAYNE, stotic man who feels nothing, shows more emotion then he has in the last thirty years. Not that this was a bad thing, for a happy Bruce meant a GRAND time in the bed.

The cat lady licked her lips, eager to have the man in her bed yet again. She really must thank that girl for doing this for her.

“Brucie Dear, could you please slow down, I can barely stay awake, especially from last night.” She purred. What she didn’t expect was the tone in his answer.

“Oh, I know and I can keep coming back, IF you give me that young lady’s number.” Shit, since when did he get this aggressive!??!? The poor lady was blushing a new shade of red. Bruce wasn’t the type to be this aggressive. Now she REALLY must thank Marinette.

“Ugh let me talk to her first, then we’ll see.” And she cut the call. Getting up from her bed, Selina’s nightgown slipped out of her shoulders. The proof of Bruce’s late night visit was all over her neck and upper chest area. Blushing at the reminder of what went down that night, Selina made up her mind and called Marinette quickly.

“Mari dear, I’m sorry, were you sleeping?” She asked wincing that she woke the poor girl up, she wasn’t much of a morning person, much like herself.

“Mmmm” the older lady chuckled.

“Hey Mari dear, you know the babysitting gig I set you up for?” Somehow that woke Marinette up.

“OH NO DID I DO A TERRIBLE JOB?!? What if he fires me?!? What if he blacklists me and I can never get my dream job!?? Am I going to jail I can’t go there Selin- Marinette calm down!!!” Selina finally calmed the now sobbing Bluenette over the phone.

After a few minutes of Selina calming the girl down, Marinette was now in a better state of mind to listen to what Selina had to say.

“So he actually wants me to be a permanent babysitter?” She clarified. Selina confirmed.

“Why is this so hard for you to believe?” Selina asked annoyed. The young designer chuckled, as though the older woman knew no better.

“don’t you think it’s a bit weird how he hasn’t even had me for a week to SEE if I was good or not? What about a proper background check?!? For all he knows I could be a suspicious person who is in it for his fortune or something?” Selina rolled her eyes. Leave it to Marinette to start overanalyzing.

“That’s because I recommended you to him dearie, are you saying I have poor judge of character?” She teased.

“Yes” she retorts back then precedes to laugh, Selina gave a pout but let it slide. She really owed Marinette this.

“So Selina, how was it?” Mari asked in a mocking tone. Selina heaved a sigh.

“It was absolutely Devine Mari Darling. It was perfect, though I think the neighbors might complain over the noise.” The more experienced woman smirked. Marinette blushes on the other line and quickly chastised her.

“Selina!”

“You asked for it!”

“Ugh so should I call him?”

The Wayne’s were currently seated in the dining room, everyone eating the breakfast Alfred made for them. What was unusual about this morning was Bruce’s mood visibly brighten, which set everyone else other than Alfred off.

Tim reaches over to lil Dick.

“Why do you think he’s in such a good mood?” Dick asked. Tim being the know-it-all he is, gave an answer.

“Bruce got to go out with Selina, and came home to find the house not in shambles.” He whispered, fearing that the good mood his father has will dissolve.

“Father, are you ok?” Damien asked. His father smiling unnerved him. Something about it felt really unnatural.

“Never felt better.” He responded too quickly for Damien’s liking. Jason was just poking his pancake with a fork. Alfred looked concerned, usually Jason loved eating anything and everything.

“ What is the matter Master Jason? Are the pancakes not to your liking?” The butler asked. Jason shook his head, then looked at Bruce with fierce determination burning in his eyes.

“Hey Bruce.” The man looked at the young boy feeling slightly apprehensive.

“Did having sex with Aunt Selina really feel that good?” Bruce immediately spits his drink. Tim was on the floor bawling, while Damien did his best to look unaffected, but ultimately snickered. Dick, being the innocent bean that he is, wonders out loud what sex is.

A blushing Bruce told his clueless son it meant nothing, while Alfred gave a disapproving look to the troublesome brat.

“Master Jason was that appropriate?” Before Jason could answer, Tim gave a ‘yes’ in response to the question. More laughter persisted as Alfred gave a dejected sigh, Dick being clueless, and Bruce wanting the earth to swallow him whole.

The phone left on the counter buzzed. Quirking an eyebrow, Alfred retrieves the phone for Bruce.

“Unknown number?” Bruce took the phone and accepted the call. He waited on the other line with baited breathe thinking it would be another spam caller. Instead a familiar feminine voice spoke.

“A-Are you Mr.Bruce? The one who needed a last minute babysitter? Selina told me that you were planning on making me a permanent one...”

“Ah Ms.Dupain-Cheng, did Selina give you my number?”

“Yes, sorry to call you so early.”

“Ah I wouldn’t worry about that. Anyways this is good timing, I need to talk to you about being a babysitter. I made sure to deliver you your check in the mail. You should have gotten it by now.” Shuffling was heard from Bruce’s line. And some crashing noises. Bruce was close to wincing.

“Ah um... si-sir y-you didn’t”

“Oh yes I did”

“But sir this is $10,000!!! Isn’t that much for babysitting two kids, well behaved ones at that?!?” The entire mansion echoed the laughter that came from the businessman.

“It’s because they behaved so well that I gave you that much, but now that I think about it. Perhaps I should give you three extra zeroes.” He replied. Now everyone was listening in on the conversation.

“NO! I-I mean, Monsier Wayne, please this is considered too much for a babysitting job, and for a day. Please I can’t accept this.” Bruce wasn’t having any of it.

“Oh no I insist you have been a great help. You have no idea how hard it is to manage those troublemakers.”

“You must be joking, the boys have been nothing but angels”

“ either way no take backs” Bruce stubbornly stated. The boys couldn’t pick up what Marinette said over the phone that was muffled by Bruce.

“Can you come at least once a week?” He asked. More muffled digital voices in. The boys gaped as their well respected father, fist-bumped to himself like a little kid getting the best thing in the world. Alfred had merely begun cleaning up after the Waynes.

“Yes you can cancel in advance if something comes up.” He answers

“Yes you can take the boys out, but make sure it is not passed 7.” Jason and Dick perked up at that. Even Damien had to do a double take on that. Tim was listening intently to every little tid-bit.

“You want to start by the beginning of next week?” Bruce asked to confirm.

“I would be glad to Monsieur Bruce.” Marinette finished.

“Please Ms.Dupain-Cheng call me Bruce.”

“Only if you call me Marinette.”

“Then it is settled, Marinette.”

“See you next week Mon- er - i mean B-Bruce.” And the call ended. Bruce was half tempted to do a happy dance, but after looking at his boys, decided not too.

“Now everyone, I expect you all to be in the bat cave by 8, we have another serious meeting to discuss. But right now. ‘Looks at wristwatch’ looks like I have to get going.” And off Bruce went. His kids could only stare as he took off in his very expensive looking car.

“Miss.M-Marinette is going to babysit us!” Squealed Dick while Jason grinned from ear to ear.

“I’m so gonna beat pixie-bob at ultimate mecha strike three!!!” Jason spoke determinately. Tim just sipped more of his coffee, realizing he’s gonna need another mug and walks to the kitchen to make some more.

“That harlot is simply humoring you two.” Damien answered, while looking away. Dick and Jason were clearly offended by that statement.

“YOU TAKE THAT BACK!” Dick screeched as he racked his older brother who was completely caught off guard.

“Yeah lil Dickie teach Demon Spawn a lesson!!!! Jason cheered from the sidelines, and Damien struggles to get the flexible boy of him. Dick eventually kicks Damien in the family jewels.

“Ahhhhhhh oh you are so gonna- eat shit Bitch!” As Jason threw a chair at the incompacitated Damien. The two younger boys fled the scene as a rather pissed off Damien got up. Alfred offered him an ice-pack and he reluctantly took it.

“When I get my hands on those two.” As he stormed off after his idiotic brothers.

“Tikki!!!!!!!!” The super heroine pleaded. The small goddess just gave her a look.

“Just take it in strive Marinette”

“But it’s $10,000!!!!! Don’t you think it’s too much!?!?”

“I don’t know, sounds to me like those boys were not so nice to begin with Mari” Mari scoffed. How could anyone think anything bad of Jason and Dick. They were absolute angels and totally adorable.

“Please Tikki, your just jealous.” The kwami just gave her a look, before muttering ‘clueless holders’

“I heard that!”

“That’s kind of the point!” The kwami sighed. It’s going to be quite the adventure.

Can Our Love Survive? Ch 5

Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers, Saint Sarah Rogers

Warnings: Panic attack, you have been warned.

A/N: Welcome back! Hope you guys are enjoying this series, I promise things will start to heat up, just gotta get through some things that set the tone for the entire story. This chapter deals with a panic attack and some heavy feelings. If this is a trigger for you, skip this chapter. I hope you enjoy this update, and please let me know what you think. Enjoy!

Seven minutes. That's all it took. Bucky had almost kissed you before getting caught by Steve and you couldn't be happier about that unsuspecting mishap. Being on cloud nine felt almost euphoric and unbelievable, and you thought nothing could bring you down from your high. You should have known better.

You’d just finished getting dressed to join the others when your brain went into overdrive and began overthinking what’d happened in the hallway. Does he even like me? Does he feel sorry for me? Oh, my god, he thinks I'm a freak! The thoughts kept playing on repeat in your mind. You could feel the walls cave in, and you slumped in a corner of your room. The thoughts wouldn't stop, and you couldn't focus long enough to quiet your brain. Your breaths became short and you could feel the room spinning around you. Everything was out of control; your heart was racing, and you could feel the sweat starting to form on your forehead. The last thing you remember is feeling like this was the end, and then suddenly, everything was dark.

The chosen Saturday night movie was “Pretty in Pink”. It was Nat's turn to choose and she thought this would be perfect, given her best friend’s pinning over the hot guy. Maybe the two idiots would take a cue from the movie and get their shit together already. Nat was ready to see her bff happy and she was sure James was the key to that happiness.

Nat looked around the Rogers living room and made note of her group of friends. Tony was sitting cuddled up with Pepper on the small sofa, his girlfriend rolling her eyes at the popcorn mess gathering near her. Maybe if he stopped talking it would go in his mouth and not on her. Fat chance of that happening though. Silence was never on Tony’s list of things to do.

Clint, Steve, and Bucky were sitting on the large comfy sofa. Too much testosterone in one area, she deducts, shaking her head while she stares. Bucky was sitting between Clint and Steve and Nat was pretty sure Clint was interested in a Bucky, Steve sandwich. Nat knows Clint’s always had a crush on Steve. Maybe one day he’ll do something about it instead of pine over the muscly blond.

Arms wrapped around her and she melted into the touch, Sam kissing her softly on the head. They were sharing one of the reclining chairs, wrapped up in a blanket, bodies pressed close together. She was comfortable resting her head on her boyfriend’s bulky chest, realizing just how lucky she was to have Sam in her life. He wasn't everyone's shot of tequila, but his personality grew on her, so she decided to keep him around. Nat was more of a vodka girl anyway.

Looking to the other reclining chair, Nat noticed it was vacant and had been for some time, and Nat, who was usually calm started to worry.

“Steve.” Nat’s eyes are laser focused on the boy.

“Yes Natasha?” Steve laughs slightly, not noting the seriousness in her tone.

Nat makes eye contact and moves her head in the direction of the empty recliner. She can see him waiting for her to say something, but she glares at him, waiting for him to get with the program.

“What the hell Nat? I'm not a mind read-“ And then she sees the second it dawns on him, what she was trying to convey to him without words. “Shit!” Steve sprints off the couch and runs in the direction of his sisters’ room.

Nat quickly unwraps herself from the blanket burrito of Sam and follows, stopping at another familiar door on the way.

“Mrs. Rogers!” Nat’s quickly knocking on the door, the usually calm girl in a panic having an idea what’s keeping you from joining everyone. Nat doesn't have to wait long for her to answer, and when the door opens, she makes eye contact that marks the seriousness of what’s going on.

They sprint to the room and find Steve holding his twin in his arms, trying to wake her up.

“Mom…,” his eyes plead for help. “…I couldn’t find a pulse.”

Nat watches Sarah gets on her knees and presses her fingers to the exposed neck, finding a pulse and exhales a breath she didn’t know she was holding.

“Steve, go get me a bowl of warm water, a washcloth, bottle of water, and ibuprofen. Nat, go keep everyone else in the living room please.” Sarah calmly directs them from the floor.

Steve releases his hold on his sister, transferring care to his mother and gets up and leaves the room, following her orders.

Nat doesn’t move and feels herself rooted to the ground, her eyes fixed on the body in Sarah’s arms. Yes, you are best friends, but the bond the two of you share goes so much deeper than that. You were the first person she truly opened up to and knew her better than anyone. If Nat was being honest with herself, she’d admit that she was actually in love with you, but she knew you were straighter than an arrow, so she'd never disclose that tid bit of information and was happy to keep that secret buried in her heart. Seeing you on the floor right now damn near broke her, and the last thing she wanted to do was leave this room.

“Natasha. Natasha….,” Sarah's voice broke her from her daze. “Natasha, she's going to be okay. Honey, please go to the living room and keep everyone calm. I'll come get you when she's awake. Can you do that for me?”

All Nat can do is nod. She's never been one to show her emotions, but Sarah must sense just how upsetting the scene in front of her is. Nat has never seen you in this state before and she feels broken inside.

After what seems like minutes, but probably only seconds, Nat feels herself move towards Sarah. She kneels at her side and kisses her best friend on the sweaty forehead.

“I love you, принцесса.” Nat says softly, Sarah smiling back at her.

Nat gets up and turns to leave the room just as Steve returns with the requested items. She stops at the door and looks back, taking one last look at the Rogers trio. Nat has never felt helpless before and standing in the doorway, seeing how quickly Steve and Sarah work, it hits her all at once. The stone-faced redhead sheds a single tear as she closes the door and walks back to the front room. She hopes she’ll never have to see her best friend so lifeless and down ever again.

so i kind of have a bone to pick with the shadowhunter chronicles....

before i start let me be clear that i love jem carstairs and i enjoy jessa as well. voicing that i am unhappy with something regarding jem does NOT make me a jem anti. now let me get right into it!

i have read and enjoyed every tsc book, including the novellas and bonus stories. my favorite series has easily been the infernal devices because i adore all of the characters, with will herondale forever being my fave. i eagerly anticipated the release of the last hours to read more about will who i’ve missed so much and his children!! i really liked chain of gold and especially the bonus wessa story. but with the announcement of the jem/magnus bonus story in chain of iron, i can’t help but be a little bummed. make no mistake, magnus bane is one of my fave characters and i love jem as well, but i can’t help but wish that a trilogy featuring wessa’s children would feature will/wessa just a tad bit more.

magnus has been a primary character in tmi, featured in both tid and tda, gotten his own novella collection and series (the eldest curses), and now is in the last hours as well. jem also has been present in tmi, tda, starred in tid, featured in a novella collection (gotsm), and had appearences in various other novellas or bonus stories such as after the bridge. he’s also interacted more with the tlh characters as uncle jem than either will/tessa have. and i’m sure we’ll see more from both of them in the future. i’ve read it all and am glad to have an abundance of content for these two characters! i wouldn’t want either of them to be featured less, i just simply wish will and his relationship with tessa would be featured more, especially in this series.

i’m overjoyed at the content we got with will in the infernal devices. obviously it was more than enough to make him my favorite tsc character! i cherish every easter egg that points to him throughout tsc and everything else. but since he’s dead and won’t be in any content chronologically past cp2’s epilogue, i really wish he would get more page time in the last hours!i’ll forever hold out hope for a novella collection of his life, an extended version of the wessa cave scene, and a heronstairs reunion scene, but for now i just hope to see more of him in chain of irons!! just some food for thought:)

Steven Universe (Season 1) review

The now incredibly popular Cartoon Network animated show created back in 2013 has only spiked even more in popularity due to the recently released movie that caught my eye and made me decide to dive into the show first hand just to see what I've been apparently missing out on the past few years.

Unfortunately for me, Steven Universe started airing on Television before the time that I was more open minded about animated series or even just wider genres as a whole. However, since then, a lot of animation and other content has made me spread out my taste and turned me not just willing to watch more animated content, but gladly willing to watch. And I will say, that so far, Steven Universe has only reinforced that new mentality as it surprised me in great ways.

Steven Universe follows a very young, very enthusiastic protagonist of the same name in his abnormal childhood adventures, rooted to his unwilling connection to what I can only describe as sentient rock extraterrestrials. These extraterrestrials are permanently referred to as Gems in the series and are equipped with what you'd expect: Super advanced technology/intellect, superhuman abilities, and a whole lotta backstory to unpack.

For context, I spent several years with a best friend who absolutely adored the series, and even though I wasn't particularly interested in the show, I'd always let her gush to me in great detail her favorite aspect of it; the lore. Because of this I'm already familiar with a decent chunk of the backstory that surrounded the main characters and their origins so to say, but I will say, that even though hearing about the show never made me want to go running and put it on to watch, watching how the information that I know unfolded through the show in its incredible pacing was a completely different experience.

The Gems that the story follows are a small group of short and sweet personalities. Pearl, the level headed scholar. Amethyst the rowdier, messy fun haver. Garnet, the quiet neutral one who doubles as the muscle of the team. And of course, the star of the show, Steven, the 10 year old rare half-human, half-gem hybrid trying to become a full fledged member of their team; The Crystal Gems. With their sworn duty to defend Earth from mystical threats, we watch as the Gems teach Steven some basic training and lessons of what it means to be a Crystal Gem as we simultaneously learn alongside him, who the Gems are and why they're here on our planet doing what they're doing.

This is where the show excels most. The way the show feeds information to the audience is incredible. As a loose comparison of another family friendly animated series with lots of lore about non-human characters saving the planet, I'll use My Little Pony (MLP): Friendship is Magic. MLP is a show I binged entirely for its lore and characters after hearing about it from the same friend who put me onto Steven Universe. However, despite being very interesting world building and lore exploration, the delivery of all that information was almost exclusively the scholar characters giving us very lengthy discussions in between action of episodes. Steven Universe doesnt do that though. Instead we get the engaging method of the show dropping hints, clues, and tid bits of information in a chain of loosely related episodes. For a simple example, in the lore of the show, there's a cave of important value to Steven's character. However, instead of just having Pearl go "Oh, Steven, let me show you this important location and give you a 4 minute conversation about its importance", we see implications to this place's existence over the span of the first episodes. After that, we see Steven discover it through an entirely nontraditional manner and explore it alone not knowing what it is, therefore not giving us any information about what's truly going on. Finally, a bit after in the season, we get a formal introduction to the location by Pearl to wrap up what we need to know about it in a brief minute or two. What this does, is allow us as the audience to theorize the meaning of things or people for a while, then be gifted actual on screen information in a nonformal history lesson kind of way, then have suspense for when we finally get the last pieces of the puzzles. Its a much more engaging method of giving information while eventually saving time for the formal information which may not sound like much. But when the episodes are 11 minutes long, cutting down 4-5 minutes of a history lesson, to just 1 or 2 minutes leaves more room for episodes to visually show case the significance of key information in action rather than just spend half the episode talking about it.

I'd say the only thing more important than the lore of the show however, is the atmosphere. With its watercolor sort of aesthetic to help set the general feel good and innocent tone the show it usually carries, it tends to use its art style to also butter you up for some crazy emotions. Steven Universe may have simple characters, but their dynamic between one another ends up pretty deep. Whether it's something like Garnet's quietness dropping for a moment of genuine anger or hurt because of her reaction to something. Or Amethyst dropping her carefree attitude to reveal how much she cares about something happening. The context of these moments are always INCREDIBLY powerful and filled with sincere dialogue that has left me tearing up more than just a couple of times and in my opinion, are what truly made this first season of Steven Universe a phenomenal pleasure to watch.

Another reason this show manages to have extremely good portrayal of emotions is due to its now iconic music numbers. Though they're expected, the songs sung by the characters in their appropriate moments always portray just what they have to. Funness, sadness, distress. It's a real treat, and really helps characters with simple, but strong personalities express a larger array of emotions than natural dialogue could. My favorite parts are always when they sing during action scenes because admittedly, the non musical number tracks of the show arent especially stellar. They get the job done and fit the atmosphere, but there were fewer times than I wouldve liked that I actually thought, oh hey this background track is great.

All in all, Steven Universe is an incredible show so far. One that I'm immediately continuing as soon as this is posted. The show knows what it wants to be and how it plans to do it, leaving us just an objectively well paced, well written, and crazy fun ride through an original fantasy world where you constantly want to learn more and where teases leave you constantly engaged. There's so much more I could've said, and want to say, about things like side characters, character designs, Gem abilitied (especially Gem abilities), but with this season being so long, I'd like to prioritize the more key elements of the show. Though rest assured anyone who hasnt watched the show, the things I just listed are presented and written as well as everything that I was able to talk about. Ultimately, I give Steven Universe, Season 1, a 9.5/10 rating. With genuinely nearly no complaints, even though it took several years to even give the show a try, I was left not only entirely satisfied in every category, but it exceeded all expectations and had left me crying, jaw dropped, and emotional every time it wanted to. I really liked your headcanon about Clary's death and it was as well very sad 🙁 Anyway like everyone's[tid gang ghosts,tlh gang ghosts,Jace,Clary,Kit,Baby Carstairs,Jem,Isabelle,Emma,Blackthorns,Alec and Jocelyn] reaction and how she died. Can u maybe write?

-Tessa and Jem were sent out on a mission, one that was particularly dangerous. Alec trusted that they would be able to get in and out safely, and they trusted themselves to stay safe. Even though Tessa was pregnant, she wanted nothing more than to feel useful. And though Jem wasn’t a Shadowhunter anymore, he wanted to go on this mission.

-Whenever Jem was on a mission or in a fight, he could almost always feel Will’s presence. The ghost of the boy Jem once knew.

-While hunting down a greater demon in a cave, Tessa and Jem decided to split up. Jem was hesitant about leaving Tessa alone, but she insisted.

-”I’m fine, Jem. I’m the baddest bitch to ever live.” Tessa said, placing a hand on her rounded stomach.

-Jem chuckled and gave in.

-Tessa went to the left while Jem turned right.

-About two minutes of silence passed.

-Then came a scream that pierced the still air. A scream full of pain and fear and unmistakably Tessa’s

-Jem dropped his sword and raced to find her. There was another scream, and he was able to follow the sound.

-When he found Tessa, there was a large gash on her throat and her own sword was stuck through her chest.

-The demon was nowhere in sight.

-Jem kneeled next to Tessa. He tried to move her, but she gasped in pain. He didn’t want to hurt her.

-”Tessa, Tessa, stay with me. Don’t close your eyes. Stay here, please, my love, stay.”

-A thin line of blood trailed out of Tessa’s mouth and her eyes started to become unfocused. Jem let out a low sob.

“Tessa, please, don’t leave me. Please.”

-Tessa used what was left of her strength to lift up her hand and cup Jem’s cheek. He turned into it and kissed her palm.

-”I will love you forever, my Jem.” Then her hand fell slack, and in it, Jem saw the Jade pendant he had given her.

-It felt as if someone had physically cut open his chest and ripped out his heart. His whole body ached

-He sat in silence for a minute. Everything felt numb. Nothing felt real.

-Surely this has to be a dream, Jem thought to himself.

-But it wasn’t. It was real.

-The only girl he had ever loved, the girl he had waited so long for, had just been taken away from him again.

-It was like an endless cycle of death.

-His parabati, Charlotte, Jessamine, Henry, Cecily, Gabriel, Gideon, Sophie, and now the love of his life and his unborn child.

-It felt as if someone had run him over.

-He turned away from Tessa’s lifeless body and threw up.

-A full day passed without Jem returning from his mission. The mission was set in LA, so Kit, after much debate, ended up calling Emma.

-Kit got portaled out to the LA institute and the blackthorns all set out to find Jem.

-Ty and Kit exchanged a few glances but said nothing to each other. It wasn’t the time or place.

-Emma and Julian had come back to LA for this, taking a break from their travel year. Kit apologized profusely, but Emma just shook him off.

-"Jem is my family. I need to help.” She had told him.

-Julian didn’t seem to mind being back either. Tavvy had taken hold of Jules’s neck and hadn’t let go yet.

-They split up into teams in the cave. Dru made sure that Her, Ty, and Kit were together, ignoring Kit’s protests. Emma decided to split up with Jules and go with the trio.

-Julian went with Tavvy, Cristina and Mark (who were visiting from New York)

-Thirty minutes passed an still no one had found Jem inside the old cave.

-”Do you smell that?” Kit had asked.

-”What?” Then Emma heard whispers coming from around the corner.

-Kit found Jem cradling Tessa’s body, a sword stuck through her her chest. Blood was dried to his hair and clothes. Tessa’s blood.

-Emma turned the corrner and stopped in her tracks. It took her a moment to take in the terrible scene. Dru followed and gasped, quickly slapping her hand over her mouth.

-Jem seemed oblivious to the others presence

-"Jem?" Kit asked, not daring to step forwards. Kit had never seen Jem look so broken.

-Emma gave Dru a look, Dru nodded and ran out of the room in the cave to find the others.

-Emma was the first to step forwards. She placed a comforting hand on Jem's shoulder.

-Emma's touch seemed to break Jem out of his daze.

-The two Carstairs stared at each other for what seemed like hours before Emma finally knelt down and wrapped her arms around Jem. He squeezed her back and then started to sob while Emma rubbed calming circles on his back.

-Tessa had been the only mother-figure Kit had. They hadn't known each other for long, but it had felt like years. They had shared their secrets, sitting on the front step of their house. Kit confided in Tessa about how he felt about Ty, and in return, Tessa told him stories about a time when she was younger. All her stories were ones that didn't go down in a history book. Ones about a boy who got tricked by six-fingered nigal, a boy who madly chased after a demon, who made up terrible poetry, who pretended to go out and get drunk every night, who loved his parabati more than himself, and who loved with every piece of his heart. Others included a dying boy, a boy who could play the violin like no other, a boy who would whisper secrets in Mandarin, a boy whose body may not have been strong, but his heart was. Kit always knew those ones were about Jem.

-Now those secrets, stories, and the love that Tessa had to give had died with her.

-Kit collapsed in front of Tessa's body and started to weep. He felt a strong hand on his shoulder and looked up. He had half expected to see Ty or Julian, but instead he saw Jem.

-Jem pulled Kit closer to him and wrapped his arms around Kit as they both cried together.

-Emma had never known Tessa very well. Her and Jem were always off on some kind of mission, and they never really got to bond. She didn't know how to react. She felt like she didn't know Tessa well enough to cry over her passing, but she did know her well enough to be devastated by the loss of a friend.

-Julian had never really known Tessa. But he had heard stories of what a wonderful woman she had been and he and Emma both wished they had spent more time getting to know her.

-Emma was the one to deliver the news to the Shadowhunters in New York.

-Jace was absolutely devasted. Besides Kit, Tessa was his only living relative. They had become close over the years. Tessa had told Jace stories of Will and James Herondale. She had told him how much he and Will were alike, how much he reminded her of him, even down to the irrational fear of ducks. Now she was gone. Clary held Jace when he cried, stroking his hair and singing him soft lullabies.

-Magnus was torn apart. Tessa had always been like the little sister he never knew he needed. He had comforted her when Will died and he had thought she would comfort him when Alec died. Though, that was never something Magnus liked to dwell upon. They had been through so much together, and Magnus knew how brave and strong she was. He told Alec over and over that it wasn't fair. That she was still young and had so much going for her.

-Alec blamed himself. He tore himself apart, thinking that he had killed Tessa. It got to the point where he would run to the bathroom to throw up at three in the morning because he had had yet another nightmare. "Why didn't I tell Tessa she couldn't go? She was pregnant, for Angels sake. I killed her and a child." To which Magnus would reply "It's not you're fault, Alexander." To which Alec would say "Lies." And storm away.

-Tessa was now with Will, who thought she had come much too soon. Both Will and Tessa were tied to earth until Jem joined them.

-Jem and Kit both moved into the LA institute. Jem wasn't able to go back into their house. Too many things of Tessa's were there. Kit wasn't too eager to go back home either.

-Tessa spent a lot of her time watching over Jem and Kit. Though, she tried to steer away from Kit. Because if Kit saw her and thought that she was still there, he would become hopeful, and hope is wasted on the dead.

-Jem never got the chance to tell Tessa that he had kept the song that he wrote for her all those years ago. He had kept it safe in his robes, pockets, and then eventually, his beloved violin case.

-It wasn't until two weeks after Tessa's death that Jem finally broke out his violin. It was late at night. He pressed his bow to the strings and started to lose himself in the music.

-Jem had hoped not to wake any of the residents of the institute, but Kit couldn't stay away from the hauntingly sweet tone of the violin that drifted up the stairs from the music room. Kit stood at the doorway, watching as Jem played with a great intensity. Kit could see the tears that trailed down Jem's cheeks.

-Jem continued to play the violin, oblivious to the world around him, when Kit looked up and caught sight of two pale figures floating next to where Jem was standing. It was a girl, a girl who was unmistakably Tessa. Her brown hair floated down around her like a waterfall. She was with a boy with black hair and blue eyes. Kit couldn't tell if it was the boy from Tessa's stories or not, but both ghosts looked content.

-Kit was able to make out Tessa whisper "I will always love you, Jem. My Jem." She looked to the ghost next to her. "I do wish he could hear me."

-"Keep going. It helps, Tess." The ghost with black hair said.

-"Do not cry for me, Jem. I will always be with you." The violin playing ceased and Jem looked up, almost like he could hear Tessa. Though Kit knew he couldn't. "Even if you can't hear me, or see me, I'm here. We're here." Tessa reached out to touch Jem as he started weeping again, but the other ghost kept her back.

-"Entreat me not to leave thee," the boy ghost said.

-"Take your time, James." Tessa said. And with that the ghosts disappeared, as if they were never there in the first place. Jem's sobs were the only thing to be heard.

Can you do a ranking of all the main TSC ships so Clace, Wessa/Jessa, Blackstairs, Jordelia and Kitty( though we don't have TWP yet so we don't know how their full story yet)? but i like oversharing !! so here it's the long version of the ranking lmao 😆

i have a huge problem with tsc main couples, usually because the plot is always some version of "forbidden love" and because it feels like cc is pushing them down my throat w/ the amount of scenes she writes for them.

much like you, jessa and kitty are the only main pairings i enjoy reading about - but i'm lowkey afraid of how different main-couple kitty will be from side-couple kitty (imo cc doesn't know how to write main couples).

1) kitty: this is using their tda dynamic, since we have no idea how they'll be in twp. they were my otp before i got to know thomastair, and i totally agree with everyone who says that they carried tda on their backs.

2) jessa: modern day jessa is probably my biggest comfort ship in tsc - all i need to do is think about them and their children in devon and i'm already smiling. i do have a few issues with tid!jessa: the way i read it, tessa emotionally cheated on jem more than once during their engagement - though i feel like that was cc not being able to not write about will for 5 pages. the cave scene is a big no also affected them, since idk how u can have sex with someone else hours after your fiancee just died. so, even tho i like jessa, they're very far from my number 1 spot - mainly bc of tid!jessa, modern jessa is flawless and they have my whole world 💁🏽‍♀️

now let's get into the other 4 couples, which i classify as boring/annoying.

3) jordelia: i know it seems like i hate jordelia, but i don't : ) they just are the most boring pairing in tlh for me. also, i'm very, very petty and i feel jealous of the amount of scenes jordelia gets in comparison to thomastair, what makes me feel robbed 👁️👄👁️

4) blackstairs: they were okay in the first book, there was the right amount of angst and yearning for me. but after los, everything went down. it was basically like this "oh julian, we can't be together because there's a curse and our entire family die because of it!" "no, emma! i could never risk my siblings' well being! they're my priority!" "you need to stay away from each other!" "yes!" and then they proceeded to have sex. not to mention how blackstairs became emma's entire character and pretty much killed what could've been a very cool main character for me.

5) wessa: they're probably my least favorite pairing, but clace is a whole new set of messed up and that's the only reason why they won't be on last... wessa annoys me more than any other couple. they're cliche, boring and the only memorable scene they have is the cave one, and it's memorable for wrong reasons.

6) clace: to be honest, i don't even remember much of clace and they don't annoy me as much as they did... 5 years ago? but i still remember how i stopped reading tmi on my first try because i absolutely despised them... and, as i said before, they really are very messed up. i saw the "i should punch the boys who want to do to you what i want to do with you" quote today, what's always a good reminder of how tmi books were and why i chose to forget everything non-simon that happened in them.

ps: tho i believe jace/clace are worst than will/wessa, i'm more into the period series, what means that i get reminded more of why i don't like will and wessa, which makes me get more annoyed with them than with jace and clace. does that makes sense?

I realize this is after the release date of QOAAD but you know what? I just finished rereading it and want to share my thoughts.

Synopsis:

REVIEW TIME W/ SPOILERS!

Wow, I freaking loved rereading Lady Midnight. All the feels have returned! This book probably has to be one of my top favorites. It’s just so good! The main characters are well-written and the plot is amazing. The plot twists are so good and contain the perfect amount of shock factor. Seriously. The first time I read this, I was shaken to the core SO MANY TIMES, I had to pause my reading and take in what I had just read.

Can I just say that I have SO MUCH MORE appreciation for Mark Blackthorn? Man has got the best, and I mean THE BEST character development in TDA ever. In the beginning, he isolates himself and makes it clear that he’s different. He’s angry and alone and broken. The way he flinches from the stele and refuses the runes shows his isolation but at the end, when the whole gang is going to fight Malcolm, he lets Julian draw runes on him AND BOY DID THAT BREAK MY HEART. I loved that scene so so much because Mark has grown so much since the beginning of the book. I also loved his reasons for letting Julian draw runes on him and how it tied to an earlier scene. I don’t make any sense right now so I’ll add in some quotes here:

“Mark shook his head. ‘When they beat me for saying I was a Shadowhunter, it only made me more sure. I know what I am even if I cannot say it.’... So Mark pressed up against his lover and only friend and whispered into the space between them, where his cold body pressed against Kieran’s warm one. ‘I am a Shadowhunter. I am a Shadowhunter. I am a Shadowhunter.’” (296)

“‘For Tavvy,” Mark said... ‘And,’ Mark added, “because I am a Shadowhunter.’ He looked toward Kieran, ... ‘Because I am a Shadowhunter,’ he said again, his eyes full of a private challenge. ‘Because I am a Shadowhunter.’” (568)

I JUST LOVE THESE SCENES AND MARK AND HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

Something I realized towards the end of the book when Jace and Clary show up, was that they’re the same age as Mark. That made me realize that when the TMI gang saw Mark in the Wild Hunt in COHF, they were the same age but had such different fates. The TMI gang were saving the world, Mark was being exiled because of who he was. That made me so sad.

With this reread, I didn’t really love Julian as much as I did the first time around. He’s been through a lot, with having to take care of his siblings and run the institute at 12 years old, but that still doesn’t excuse him for being an asshole. Like don’t get me wrong, I still love the man but he needs to fix his attitude. In the scene where Julian and Emma return to the institute to find the kitchen a mess, Julian just flips out at Mark and says really hurtful things, and I’m just like, Julian... can you stop? And I don’t even think Julian apologized about saying that stuff. Did he?

One thing that bothered me just a bit was when characters were always thinking and/or talking about their love lives in a dire moment. Example: when Cristina and Emma are in the middle of tracking down Sterling, ready to bust through the bar, they’re still talking about the unresolved feelings Emma has towards Julian. Like, you guys need to focus on the task at hand and talk about that stuff later.

Another thing that bothered me was how Julian and Emma and some others, kept telling Mark to “act normal”. Only days ago did Mark come back from being in the hunt for who knows how long and they already expect him to act like a Shadowhunter? No, that’s not right. And it feels like they barely respect that.

I never realized how many intimate scenes Emma and Julian have but there were a lot and I loved it. THAT SLOW BURN LOVE KILLS ME. Every time they had a moment together, they would stop it before it went any further or they were interrupted and I would always die in agony. I just want Emma and Julian to have a happy ending, goddamnit! Let these precious children not suffer anymore and give them the life they deserve!

The bond and amount of love the characters in this book have for each other is the purest thing ever. I just adore the way Cassandra Clare has written this family. The sacrifices they will make for each other, the lengths they will go to protect each other, everything makes my heart swell. Like at the end where the gang is facing down the Followers, Ty and Livvy are cornered but Dru comes in and shouts for Malcolm to back the fuck off because if he touches them, she will kill him and man, the feels were everywhere. The small bits where we got to see Ty, Livvy, and Dru were so nice because we barely get anything about them in this book.

With The Dark Artifices being a new series in the already developed Shadowhunter world, the world building needs to be brief but thorough so that readers who haven’t read TMI or TID can still understand how the world works. I found that there were moments where it was info-dumpy but one scene that I found very clever that has to do with world building was the classroom scene. The children are being tested by Diana on their knowledge of the Shadowhunter world and rules and laws. It’s so nicely added because it has context to the plot. They’re going to be tested by the Clave so the review is necessary.

The friendship between Cristina and Emma was so nice to see because in TMI and TID, we didn’t get a lot of strong female friendships. Emma and Cristina’s was so real and relatable. The way they lean on each other and can tell each other everything is so nice to see. I want to see more female friendships like this. With that being said, seeing more of Emma and Clary’s friendship would be nice too.

The female characters in this book has got to be my favorite thing. First, Emma. I freaking love Emma Carstairs. I really enjoyed how even though Emma is compared to Jace, Cassandra Clare doesn’t write Emma as a carbon copy. There are some ways they are similar i.e: their joking in a serious situation and level of skills and determination. But they are in so many ways different. I won’t go into detail because this is about Emma, not Jace. Emma is so fierce and sassy and I love it. If you’ve read my other reviews, you know I love my sassy female characters. Although Emma is strong physically and mentally and is humorous, she has vulnerabilities, she shows her emotions. She isn’t your typical strong female heroine. Also, she doesn’t use her parents death and her traumatic past as an excuse to being an asshole. She’s no asshole but like we see so many characters who are rude and abusive, use their traumatic past as a pass and that’s not right.

Cristina Rosales is QUEEN. She is embodies the word non-judgmental. She sees things from both perspectives and makes valid arguments. Cristina is so damn smart. I love how she can be very nice and caring but also a stone-cold badass when she needs to. Like when Sterling called Emma a bitch, Cristina slaps the shit out of him and stands for Emma. Again, QUEEN.

Although we didn’t get a lot of Diana, what we did get from her was amazing. She is so freaking smart! She pieced every clue about Malcolm together and solved it before any of the others could. Yeah, she should’ve told the others but Diana wanted to get rid of the problem herself. That was why she was at the convergence by herself. She was going to fight off Malcolm and save Tavvy before the others even knew of it and could possibly die themselves. It’s very dangerous but Diana is a pure soul.

I admire the way Cassandra Clare writes that Mark is bisexual. It doesn’t leave readers assuming or leaving his sexual orientation open-ended. One thing I absolutely love about the Shadowhunter Chronicles is the amount of diversity she has in these books. She gives us characters of color, of different sexual orientations, of different beliefs, of different disabilities. It’s so broad and it’s freaking amazing.

All in all, I loved rereading this book so much. I noticed so many different things and it was really refreshing. I’m currently rereading Lord of Shadows as well and will hopefully be posting a review about it. 4.5/5 stars!

(1) Hey I don't know if you're still doing asks but I wanted to talk about Jem and "respectability politics". A lot of fans praise him as always being so kind and gentle despite what he's been through and I have issue with some of those statements and the way they are phrased. Because first of all, the fact that they're talking about a poc and praising his overwhelming politeness is a little iffy to me idk. Maybe I'm overreacting. But I just feel like anger and bitterness in various minorities-

(2) is always overtly ridiculed and frowned upon. Anger and negativity are pretty common responses to trauma and adversity and while, yes you are responsible for your actions and how you treat others, I feel like certain groups of people are usually held to a higher standard when it comes to expressing anger and resentment you know? Idk maybe I'm overreacting, but it feels like people are saying "look at how well behaved Jem is! Be more like him!" Thoughts?

Oh yes, people definitely love saying things like that about Jem. People answer differently to their traumas and to their experiences. Jem dealt with all of it in a unusual way, but it should never be used as an argument to invalid the way other people (or characters, in this case) react to their own experiences. As you said, they're still responsible for what they say and do, but they shouldn't be villainized for the way that someone else responded to their own traumas, if you get what I mean?

I don't have any issue with Jem having kindness and sympathy as such strong traits - I actually think it's good to see these things on him when the usual rule for YA love interests is exactly the opposite. I do have a problem, however, with how some people react to any other feeling Jem might express or how his non-gentle feelings are called "dramatic" or "unreasonable" (for example, the scene where he punched Will for completely understandable reasons and some people think he was wrong and overreacting). It's infuriating, yes, to see that his feelings, as POC, are only valid if they're "good" feelings and that anything similar to anger or fury are not well-received.

Characters aren't one-dimensional; Jem also feels anger, disappointment, fury, hate and etc., the fact that we've only one (I think) scene in TID where he shows one of those feelings sits wrong with me. Especially because there were other scenes where his anger would be well put, but it was deliberately thrown aside (the scene where Tessa implies what she and Will did in the cave and Jem asks her to not tell him, btw).

You're right, of course, about the way the fandom treats the bitterness/anger when this emotion is portrayed by certain groups, nto to mention how their traumas are belittled. The fact that this fandom often brings up what Will's "curse" but ignores how Jem was tortured, had to watch his parents die, was told at a young age he wouldn't make it pass 20 and still doesn't address his experiences as a birracial child living in England during the Victorian Era is a good example of this behavior.

If you wanna praise Jem's kindness, do it (!) but also know that he's more than it, please. Be aware that Jem, much like any other character, is allowed to be angry/bitter if that's the case. Don't be the one expecting happiness and understanding 24/7 from a POC, even if the POC in question is just a character!
