“[y/n], there’s this manager in my volleyball and she’s just… so pretty. i think i like her,” her bright voice lit up the room, but for you? oh, you were aching so bad.
you felt nothing but this aching pain in this heart, your throat feeling like there was something stuck in there. simply, your heart was heart because of her.
“that’s great, yachi… but excuse me. i’m gonna use the restroom,” giving a quick smile, you ran to the bathroom, shutting it behind you.
‘shit!’
your heart was racing each second, your hands clutching your chest.
why did she have to like another person, other than you?
“shit, shit, shit—” you mumbled, facing yourself towards the toilet as you began to cough; but it was unusual. the object that came out of you were flowers? but, they were lillies. which resembled a lost loved one, normally they were used for death but losing yachi felt like death to you.
“[y/n]? are you okay?” yachi knocked on the door, putting her ear against the door. “uh, yeah! i’m okay… just cleaning up.” you lied through your teeth, flushing the toilet as you washed yourself up.
opening the door, you were greeted by a concerned yachi. “i heard you coughing a lot… just wanted to check up on you.” her hands placed on your shoulder, rubbing them softly. “i’m fine, trust me…” you pushed her hands off, giving her a fake smile.
“could you help me out today? volleyball is taking an off day, we kinda need it…” you and yachi were beside each other, walking towards the city bus stop. “sure! but aren’t you suppose to help kageyama and hinata?” you questioned, sitting down.
“i was suppose to, but they’re busy with a team dinner.”
“you aren’t going?”
“no, i’d rather stay in and catch up on grades…” she looked gloomy, more than usual. “what’s wrong?” you threw an arm around her, giving her an assuring pat. “it’s kiyoko… i think she likes tanaka.”
yk per se, you were quite happy that kiyoko possibly likes tanaka— but again, you’re suppose to be yachi’s friend, and actually comfort the poor girl.
“hey, it’s gonna be okay… people are going to move on, and plus, she missed out on a huge deal. you’re so perfect, and you deserve the most perfect partner ever,” you whispered, comforting her. “you really think so, [y/n]?” she wiped her tears, looking up to meet your eyes. “i really do think so, yachi. you’ll find someone soon…”
and you wished that ‘someone’ was you. but beggers can’t be choosers, sadly.
“here, wrap this around you.” your hands grazed against her shoulders, placing the coat around her body. “thank you, but what about you?” questioning, her head turned towards you— it was cute, seeing her nose and cheeks with a pink tint. “i’ll be okay! i’m gonna have to leave in a bit anyways. i got practice in a bit!” you giggled, balancing your weight on the arms as they were placed on the concrete.
“oh, for what?”
“i play the guitar, yachi. i’m in a band with my friends.”
for some reason, she was shocked— that you had the courage to actually play an instrument, let alone an instrument that requires good finger work and memory. “what’s with that look?” you arched an eyebrow, flicking her forehead. “i’m only shocked because i was wondering why your arms were so… masculine? which i love, of course…” her cheeks grew even more pinker than before, looking away to hide her face.
“well? don’t be shy and kiss me. i’m about to leave, idiot.”
to think of it, it was very bold of you to say, considering the both of you were only in the talking stage, or at least, ‘wanting to be more than friends’ stage. “w-what?”
rolling your eyes, you used your free hand to grab her jaw and pull her lips towards yours, exchanging a spark. she closed her eyes as she became more comfortable within, tugging on your shirt to pull you more closer.
and without words, you pulled away, smiling over at the fact how shy she was being right now. “maybe we can continue this later, see ya.”
“bye…”

Tsukishima x Reader
Summary:
If there is one thing Tsukishima is not, he is not in a relationship with you.
You don’t know how it started - that’s a lie, you know how it started, you just don’t know when FWBs became lying to your friends about not being able to meet with them because you’d rather spend time with Tsukishima in secret.
Maybe it was time to admit to yourselves that you wanted to be more than just friends with benefits?

the first time kanoka serves in front of runa and yachi, she manages to render them speechless.
she jumps up and hits the ball–it's a nice, satisfying hit, and the ball lands in the corner she'd been aiming for. she turns around triumphantly to look at her girlfriends, both of whom are sitting off to the side. runa's knees are tucked against her chest, hands clasped by her ankles. yachi's sitting cross legged, hands pressing down her skirt. both of them stare at her with wide eyes and slightly parted lips as she waits for them to say something.
of course, no one says anything. she stares at runa and yachi, and they stare back at her with twin expressions of...shock, she thinks. but why would they be shocked? they've seen other serves before...was hers bad?
"ah…" kanoka laughs nervously. "it's, ah, it's not as strong as the guys i'm sure-"
"no no, it was wonderful!" yachi practically shrieks. her face heats up and she waves her hands frantically. "i was just really blown away by your strength!"
runa nods so fast that it looks like her head might fall off. "yeah! you looked really cool!" she says.
"really cool," yachi agrees.
"yeah. really cool." runa ducks her head down behind her knees after she says that. "i've never seen anything like it."
kanoka blushes. "thank you," she says. there's another moment of silence, before kanoka picks up another volleyball and spins it between her hands. "do. um. do either of you want to try?"
"oh…i've never actually served before," runa confesses. she's still hiding behind her knees. "hana usually handled that…i just throw the ball."
"i can teach you?" kanoka offers. she looks at yachi, who starts nodding almost immediately. "you too, if you want."
"sure!" yachi rockets up to her feet, then flails about as she nearly overbalances, before she manages to catch herself. "kageyama and hinata have taught me a little, but i'm not that great," she tells kanoka. "some tips would be nice."
"sure thing!"
runa slowly gets to her feet. "thanks for offering to show us," she says. "so, what's the first step?"
kanoka smiles at her girlfriends. "okay," she says. "so what you wanna do is this…"

It's finally here! I was motivated to finish this recommendation list after seeing some anti-SakuAtsu foolery on Twitter (someone was saying that it only has 2 good fics out of the nearly 10K it has on AO3🤨). Anyway, here's 30 (!!) Haikyuu fics to enjoy: 10 SKTS, 10 Other, and 10 platonic. Make sure to check all tags before reading, and, if you can, leave a comment or Kudos. Enjoy!
SakuAtsu🦊😷
a thousand winds that blow: Motoya dies, Kiyoomi struggles, and a kindhearted bartender helps. I almost felt guilty the amount of times this fic made me laugh. 18K words. Rating: Teen Audiences (as the tags mention, grief and mourning are heavy themes here)
big league chew: Newbie baseball pitcher Sakusa is mentored by hothead catcher Atsumu. Featuring beautiful relationship development and Sakusa & Osamu friendship. 93K Words (9 chapters). Rating: Explicit
Call Me Baby: after recieving a gift card for a phone sex line, Sakusa reluctantly calls and ends up making a friend. 11K words. Rating: Mature
Four Years: Atsumu struggles to forgive his brother and his ex after he caught them with each other. I normally skip cheating fics but this one was so complex and handled so well, that I had to tell everyone else about it. 21K words (10 chapters). Rating: Teen Audiences  (The follow-up stories are highly recommended too)
Hell or Glory:  Atsumu meets Sakusa while trying to find Osamu during a zombie apocalypse. 12K words. Rating: Mature (minor character deaths, very little gore for a zombie fic though)
holding up the universe: When his soulmark doesn't appear on his wrist at 14 years old, Kiyoomi resigns himself to a lifetime of loneliness. Featuring background Suna/Osamu/Motoya. 50K words (2 chapters). Rating: Mature
how can I not be moved by you: within 5 seconds of meeting warlock Atsumu, apothecary owner Sakusa decides that he does not like him. Modern era magic AU. 26K words (3 chapters). Teen Audiences.
how to NOT fall in love with your flatmate's twin  Definitely a SakuAtsu fic, but it focuses heavily on the developing friendship between roommates Sakusa and Osamu as Kiyoomi denies his feelings for Atsumu. 47K words (3 chapters). Rating: Mature
Lost In Your Pull: In which Kiyoomi defines everything using the logic of physics then realizes that he can't escape Atsumu's gravitational pull. 19K words (2 chapters). Rating: Teen Audiences
lovegame: Atsumu encounters an intriguing stranger while traveling to be a contestant on Love Island. Awesome fic, featuring great friendship dynamics. 119K words (18 chapters). Rating: Mature
Haikyuu (misc)🏐🏐
After You Go, Won't You Stay?: MSBY's bus is involved in a crash, leaving everyone scrambling in the aftermath. 4K words. Rating: General Audiences (Major Character Death & grief)
and this is breathing (and seeing it go): Hinata suffers from homesickness when he joins The Black Jackals; his teammates help. 6K words. Rating: Teen Audiences
Enigma: an ode to Bokuto Koutarou. 2.5K words. Rating: General Audiences
Tumblr media
gonna stand by you  5 times Kageyama defended his teammates and 1 time they defended him. 5K Words. Rating: General Audiences
meeting you: Kenma's low self-esteem makes him hesitant to meet his longtime online friends. 7K words (2 Chapters) Rating: Teen Audiences
"Monster": Tendou finds acceptance at Shiratorizawa. 2K words. Rating: General Audiences
Tumblr media
Silver Lining: Asahi gets stood up on a blind date at a festival, but ends up having the best day of his life anyway. 9K words. Rating: Teen Audiences
Something Bigger: Despite his best efforts, Tsukishima might be developing feelings for the two guys who rent surfboards from his shop every day. 8K words. Rating: Teen Audiences
Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Kuroo and Kenma meet in different lifetimes. Promised Neverland-ish reincarnation fic. Technically does contain Major Character Death. 32K Words (5 chapters) Rating: Mature (for angst)
the world will follow after: Tsukishima refuses to go to Hinata and Kageyama's wedding alone, so he puts out an ad on Craigslist to find a date. While this is a Tsukkiyama fic, I especially love how the friendships are written in this story. 120K words (11 Chapters) Rating: Explicit
Tumblr media
Platonic
all id, no ego: Atsumu learns more about himself as his friendship with Sakusa develops. 8K words. Rating: Teen Audiences

Tumblr media
Oh, Brother(s): 3 times Aran was there for the twins and 1 time they were there for him. 4K words. Rating: General Audiences
paper flowers: Ushijima's garden seems to attract other team captains. 3K words. Rating: General Audiences
Picasso's Portraits: art student Atsumu goes to an art museum to find inspiration for a project and ends up clashing with an artist there. 9K words. Rating: General Audiences
Shivers Down My Spine: Yachi's terrible day is greatly improved when she runs into some familiar faces at the library. 8K words. Rating: General Audiences
(I never ask this, but feel free to reblog this post, because the more people see the recommendations, the more they'll share with others.)
See you in a few weeks months soon with another list🥰

Is it really your birthday if you don't cry and question your place in the world??

“Ditch?” Yachi repeats, looking extremely unsure of herself. “Ditch,” Shoyo confirms.
In April 2010, Hinata Shoyo and his childhood friend Yachi Hitoka leave Miyagi Prefecture to attend university in Tokyo. Shortly thereafter, an attempt to avoid compulsory hazing during their medical school orientation leads to an unlikely new friendship with three fellow first years
A/N: Written by @r0mantic-era as part of our collaborative series of Haikyuu Hospital Playlist AU fics, featuring the Karasuno first years as the 99s! Originally published on AO3 on March 25th. Further author's notes can be found there.
***
Hinata Shoyo sits with his back pressed against the wall of a crowded room, clutching his abdomen and gritting his teeth.
While an off-key rendition of Katy Perry’s Hot and Cold warbles through the cramped space, his stomach churns the overabundance of food he’d eaten during dinner. Eager to please his new seniors as they piled meat on his plate, Shoyo had shoved down piece after piece, constantly replaced in a never-ending stream, and ignored his body’s growing protests.
Now, he’s paying the price.
Beside him, Yachi gnaws on her fingernails, free hand twisted into the fabric of his tee shirt. “Hinata,” she mumbles. “I can’t do this.”
“Hurghh,” Shoyo groans in response, battling a wave of nausea as it rolls over his body. Although he prides himself on his stomach, he’s never been able to eat like Yachi. Bile rises in his throat.
Noticing the telltale signs, Yachi hurriedly presses her water bottle into his hand. “Drink,” she urges, glancing nervously over to their left. When Shoyo follows her gaze, he sees cases upon cases of alcohol stacked against the wall. The thought of getting hazed with alcohol in this state…Shoyo chokes down a gag and immediately looks away, back towards the front of the room.
“Wonderful performance! Everyone give a big hand to Hakuba-kun!!” announces Yamamoto Akane, one of the older med students running the retreat. “Who’s next?” The upperclassman’s eyes gleam while she scans the crowd, like a lion surveying a herd of antelope, as Hakuba Gao—one of their fellow first years—hurries off the stage, cheeks flaming.
“Hinata, I will pass away if I have to sing in front of the whole class,” Yachi hisses in his ear, pure dread plastered across her face. “Please!”
Shoyo chugs the water and finishes in several gulps before wiping the back of his hand across his mouth with a sigh. Sweet relief hits his system when he swallows, easing the pressure in his stomach just enough to respond properly. “I’m in no shape to perform, either,” he whispers back. “Let’s ditch.”
“Ditch?” Yachi repeats, looking extremely unsure of herself.
“Ditch,” Shoyo confirms, holding out his hand to his oldest and dearest childhood friend with a grin. Clearly conflicted, Yachi stares at him, torn between her fear of getting in trouble and her obvious desire to leave.
After a minute, Shoyo makes the decision for her. “We won’t get caught,” he asserts confidently. Momentarily grabbing her hand, he climbs to his feet and leads her out the back door. Yachi follows without protest, stage fright more anxiety-inducing than any punishment their seniors can deal out.
The fresh night air kisses his lungs when they slip outside, clearing away his food-induced queasiness until it is nothing more than a faint, dull ache. Creeping across the porch of the inn, Shoyo makes to turn the corner when Yachi grips the edge of his tee shirt.
“Hinata, wait! Look!” Yachi warns under her breath, gesturing ahead.
Sure enough, he spots two other seniors leaning against the exit of the venue. Shoyo can’t remember their names, but the scowls on their faces are more than enough of a deterrent. “Damn it!” he curses quietly.
Their department orientation retreat is located high in the mountains at a walled inn with only one entrance: in short, there is no escape.
“The toilet?” Yachi suggests, pointing at a very sad port-a-potty a little ways away.
Shoyo wrinkles his nose. “We’d reek something awful if we went there.”
Yachi pales at the reminder. “And then we wouldn’t be able to make any friends for the rest of medical school!” she concludes, whisper rising in pitch.
Shoyo flicks her on the forehead. “You’re doing it again.”
“My bad.” Yachi rubs the spot with a small blush, embarrassed by the call-out. “Um, well, what about that shed?” She raises one finger to point toward the back of the courtyard. Sure enough, there’s a small shed there, with blue paint peeling off the door and a rusted tin roof.
“Great thinking!” Shoyo praises, dashing towards the back. Yachi follows after, inching along the side of the inn pressed to the wall like some sort of secret agent. Once she joins him by the front of the shed, Shoyo grabs the door handle and wrenches it open with a loud creak.
“Eep!” Yachi lets out a tiny shriek, which Shoyo barely manages to muffle with his hand.
Two pairs of eyes stare back from the far end of the tiny supply shed, which is actually the size of a small closet. Shoyo vaguely recognizes the pair from the day’s earlier activities—they’re fellow first year students.
An outdated SONY portable CD player sits on the ground, bracketed by their shoes. The cord of a pair of wired headphones travels up the space between them only to diverge at their shoulders, an earbud traveling to each ear.
“Oh, great,” says the first guy—he’s clearly huge, even though his frame is hunched and folded into itself in an attempt to make himself small. “This is what I was afraid of.”
His friend, similarly big but not quite as colossal, sits squished beside him with his arms wrapped around his knees. He’s a little mousy despite his big size, with a smattering of freckles across his face and jittery knees. “Tsukki… They can hear you.” His voice is soft and a little sweet.
“That’s the whole point, Yamaguchi,” replies ‘Tsukki’, who rolls his eyes behind square-rimmed glasses. “This shed is occupied. Go make out somewhere else.”
“Make out?!” Yachi squeaks, horrified.
“We’re running away from compulsory Karaoke,” Shoyo corrects, face flaming. “Yachi is my childhood friend!”
‘Yamaguchi’ perks up at that. “Tsukki and I are childhood friends, too!” he offers excitedly. “And we also came here to avoid performing!”
“Shut up, Yamaguchi,” Tsukki mutters.
Shoyo frowns at that. What’s this Tsukki guy’s problem?
“Sorry, Tsukki!” chirps Yamaguchi, flashing a toothy smile, completely unfazed by the fact that his friend just told him to shut up.
Shoyo exchanges a glance with Yachi that says, These guys are weird. She meets his eyes in agreement, lifting a hand to chew on her fingernails.
“Well, Tsukki—,” Shoyo begins.
“That’s Tsukishima to you.”
“Well, Tsukishima,” he amends. “You don’t own this shed, so you can’t complain if we join you.” Without waiting for an answer, he steps inside, extending a hand to pull Yachi in after him. She closes the door hastily and leans against it awkwardly.
“It was already cramped in here,” Tsukishima huffs.
Shoyo appraises him, squinting to see under the dim light bulb. “You’re really whiny, aren’t you?”
“Don’t say that about Tsukki!” Yamaguchi retorts immediately, uncurling his spine abruptly. His lanky limbs practically vibrate with defensive intensity. Tsukishima sighs through his nose.
“Whining is all he’s been doing since we met!” Shoyo points out, squeezing into the spot beside Tsukishima and bumping the boy over to the side with an aggressive scoot of the hips. “Yacchan, come sit here,” he instructs, patting the newly vacated space.
Tsukishima plucks the earbud from Yamaguchi’s ears and rolls up the headphones before tucking them and the Walkman into his jacket pocket. “We’re only letting you stay here because you’re both tiny,” he mutters, now pressed up against Yamaguchi due to the narrow dimensions of the shed. Yamaguchi looks rather uncomfortable, contorted awkwardly against the wall to make more space. Tsukishima’s hands are tightly clasped in his lap, his face oddly redder than it was just a minute prior.
“Tiny?!” Shoyo jabs Tsukishima in the ribs with his elbow, sensitive about his height. “I’m a very respectable height, you know. You’re just…freaky!”
Yamaguchi snickers into his hand. Shoyo is starting to think that he’s not quite as nice as initial appearances had suggested.
“Shhhh,” Yachi interjects worriedly. “You two are going to get us caught! Can’t we all just be quiet?!”
Shoyo can’t really handle awkward silence, though, when he’s not preoccupied by a task. “My name’s Hinata Shoyo. She’s Yachi Hitoka,” he tells Tsukishima and Yamaguchi. “Yacchan and I are from Miyagi Prefecture.”
“I’m Yamaguchi Tadashi from Tokyo,” Yamaguchi tells Shoyo, twisting his torso in an attempt to find a better sitting position. “And this is my best friend Tsukishima Kei! Tsukki scored in the top percentile on the entrance exam for this program,” he announces proudly, puffing out his chest like he’s sharing his own scores and not somebody else’s.
“Shut up, Yamaguchi,” Tsukishima groans, burying his head in his hands. Shoyo thinks he catches a glimpse of pink cheeks peeking through Tsukishima’s fingers.
“Sorry, Tsukki!”
“Shhhh!!” Yachi begs, hushing them all again. “What if—”
The door to the shed swings open.
“Ahhh!! We’re sorry!!” Yachi yelps, immediately getting to her knees to beg for forgiveness.
The person standing there stares down at her, eyes wide. “Huh.” And then he looks up.
Flat black hair cut like a bowl sits above piercing eyes, cobalt like the blue of a Mikasa volleyball. Shoyo traces the stranger’s small nose down to his deeply set frown, lips curved like Cupid’s bow. The boy is tall, hands shoved into the pockets of a black Adidas tracksuit.
The first coherent thought that Shoyo manages to formulate is: Cool.
“Oh, it’s this asshole again,” Tsukishima states, matter-of-fact. “The one who was trying to boss us around during the games earlier today. Kageyama, right?”
Kageyama’s face clouds like the sky before a storm. “You were the reason our team ate lunch last,” he mutters. “All the yogurt was gone by then. Jerk.”
“So you’re not an upperclassman?” Yachi asks, relief blossoming across her face. She scrambles to her feet and grabs Kageyama’s sleeve, pulling him inside before quickly shutting the door. “Phew… Now everybody be quiet!” she orders. “I don’t even want to think about what they’ll do to us if they find us.”
At her command, the shed falls silent for a while. Kageyama shuffles his feet awkwardly before crouching on the ground in a flat-footed squat. Shoyo watches him with intrigue; he can’t help it. Kageyama is…he’s eye-catching.
“What are you staring at?” Kageyama grunts after a little while, breaking the quiet.
“Nothing,” Shoyo says immediately, a flush crawling up his neck. Caught red-handed. “Iwasntlookingatanything!”
“What?” Kageyama prods, leaning closer. “Are you even speaking Japanese?”
“O meu nome é Shoyo Hinata,” Shoyo jokes, feeling his skin grow sweaty under his clothes.
Kageyama stares at him blankly and tilts his head, clearly confused. Shoyo stifles a laugh. This Kageyama guy has some pretty cute behaviors, he has to admit.
Yachi swats Shoyo’s arm gently. “His name is Hinata Shoyo. I’m Yachi Hitoka. We’re from Yukigaoka in Miyagi Prefecture,” she says timidly.
Kageyama nods, looking rather solemn. “I’m Kageyama Tobio. I’m from Sendai, so I’m from Miyagi, too.”
“No way!” Shoyo whispers, fighting to keep his voice down. “I’m a huge fan of the Sendai Frogs!”
“The volleyball team?” Tsukishima perks up for the first time since Kageyama entered the shed. “I guess you have some taste, after all, Shrimpy. The Frogs have some of the best blockers in the V-League.”
Before Shoyo can contest the ‘shrimpy’ comment, Kageyama speaks up: “The Frogs have weak offensive power; they only just made the jump from division two to division one. The best team in the V-League is hands-down the Schweiden Adlers.”
“You take that back!” Shoyo protests, seething, right as Tsukishima exclaims, “The Adlers?! The fucking Adlers?!”
“Be quiet!!” Yachi begs.
“I’m just stating facts,” Kageyama retorts, crossing his arms. “The Frogs are shitty.”
“The Frogs are not shitty!” Shoyo declares, heated in a way he only is when it comes to his favorite sport. He played wing spiker for his school team all through high school until it was time to study for university entrance exams—so sue him for being a little overly passionate. “They’re about to thrash the Adlers in their next match!”
“You’re a dumbass if you think—” Kageyama begins, meeting Shoyo’s glare head-on, when the door swings open for a third time.
“Having fun?” asks Yamamoto Akane, standing in the entryway, incisors sharp in her sparkly white smile.
Shoyo fails to suppress his audible gulp.
***
“Our next performers will be a group of five! They specially volunteered to perform this next song and they’ll be cleaning up the whole place once we call it a night!” announces Yamamoto, hitting play on the iPod Nano attached to the stereo speakers.
As the familiar Woaaaah of Justin Bieber’s Baby starts to reverberate through the room, Yamaguchi clutches his microphone like a lifeline, horror-stricken. Yachi’s knees knock together like a baby giraffe. Tsukishima stares blankly ahead.
“I don’t know this song,” Kageyama announces into his microphone, prompting giggles from the audience.
“Just do ad-libs!” Yachi squeaks, lowering her microphone so that she’s only audible to the five of them. “Who knows what the upperclassmen will do if we don’t try!”
“I know you love me, I know you care,” Tsukishima says, completely deadpan, into his microphone in accented English. He sounds like he’s reciting a passage for class.
What follows is the flattest, worst musical performance that Shoyo has ever witnessed, much less participated in. Despite the fact that English was never his favorite strongest subject, Shoyo’s firm grasp on pop culture and five years of playing guitar as a hobby mean that he and Yamaguchi manage to halfway carry the tune, stumbling over the lyrics. Yachi, who Shoyo knows to be an incredibly gifted pianist and lovely singer, spends the verses breathing loudly into the microphone and warbles out the refrain pitchily, halfway hiding behind Tsukishima, who is still doing a monotone robot impression (but somehow seems to know every word, including the rap).
As for Kageyama…he just yells, “Hey!” into his microphone every few seconds, so gruff it’s almost aggressive.
Their rendition is awful, objectively, and their classmates clutch their stomachs the whole time, peals of laughter ringing through the room. Shoyo knows they mean it in good fun; when the song comes to a painful end, the other first years drunkenly hoot and holler with good-natured enthusiasm. Nonetheless, Yamaguchi and Yachi still seem to be moments away from death by mortification.
Thankfully, the event ends shortly afterward, with their fellow students stumbling into the sleeping quarters; everyone is freshly of age and unused to drinking.
Kageyama, Yachi, Yamaguchi, Tsukishima, and Shoyo remain behind, where Yamamoto hands them all trash bags and a few brooms. “Hopefully this serves as a good lesson about being good team players instead of sneaking off to avoid participating,” she tells them. “It was so sweet of you five to offer to clean all this up in place of your very tired seniors!” Yamamoto stretches her arms above her head and yawns, exaggerated. “See you in the morning~”
Once they’re alone, Yamaguchi slumps back against a wall. “I can’t believe we got caught,” he groans.
“We wouldn’t have gotten caught if these two menaces could keep their voices down,” Tsukishima snarks, bending over and getting to work, plucking up paper plates and red solo cups by their rims with two fingers, wrinkling his nose. “God damn it, everything is sticky.”
“You were being loud, too!” Shoyo objects, hands on his hips.
“Let’s just hurry and get this over with,” Yamaguchi interrupts, pinching the bridge of his nose. Abashed, Shoyo joins Tsukishima in cleaning up, along with everyone else.
They finish the job in just thirty minutes, partially because Shoyo and Kageyama somehow end up competing as to who can collect the most trash: it all starts innocently enough, with Kageyama side-eyeing Shoyo’s less-full trash bag with a smirk. Shoyo can’t really even explain how it devolves into the two of them furiously stuffing garbage into their bags as fast as they can.
Shoyo thinks he hears Tsukishima whisper, “single-celled organisms” to Yamaguchi, who snickers in response, but he graciously elects to ignore them.
Once clean-up is finished, the five of them haul the bags out to the dumpster.
“We did it!” Yachi cheers, releasing a huge sigh of relief. Shoyo grins as he watches the tension flow out from her body, fully, for the first time that evening. Without warning, however, she stiffens again.
“What’s wrong, Yacchan?” he asks, genuinely concerned. “Did we forget something?”
“No, no! It’s all okay!” Yachi digs the toe of her converse into the dirt, fiddling with her small purse. “It’s just, um… Um, well, my parents got me a digital camera. To record memories of my time at university. And…I…Will you all take the first picture with me?” she squeaks out, completely pink in the face.
“In front of the dumpster?” Tsukishima raises a skeptical eyebrow.
“Ah, no, um…maybe in front of the inn?”
“Of course, we can!” Shoyo interrupts, marching over to the front of the main building and shucking off his shoes. “Everyone, stack your shoes here. We can put the camera on top of the pile and use the timer setting!”
Surprisingly, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima and Kageyama all surrender their shoes to the pile without a fight. Yachi’s red converse sit at the very top, flipped upside down so that the little camera can rest on a flat surface. Idly, Shoyo wonders if tonight is the start of something interesting.
“I’m clicking the button!” Yachi announces, pressing down before hurrying to the front steps of the inn, where the others are already waiting. She sits in the very center, sandwiched between Kageyama and Shoyo. Yamaguchi and Tsukishima perch on the step behind them.
Shoyo watches the little green light flash, counting down from ten…nine…eight…seven…six…five…four…three…two…
He raises two fingers in a peace sign and stretches his mouth into his widest smile.

Turn Around, When Possible Reading Guide
A few months ago, I finished posting “Turn Around, When Possible” the first part of my Haikyuu fanfiction series called “There’s No Navigation That Tells You How To Survive A Car Crash”  on AO3.
Back when I posted it, I left a reading guide in the comments on that final chapter, but I’m going to transfer it to Tumblr, because I think that’ll be more organized.
So from now on, you’ll be able to find the storylines of each single character, in case you’re interested in reading only their storyline.
_______________________________________
For the people who haven’t stumbled past this post because of the link in my AO3 end-note. Hi! I welcome you to read the summary of “Turn Around, When Possible”:
It starts out like a fun idea: the Karasuno Volleyball Club traveling South to meet their rival teams for a training camp in Tokyo. Having full faith in their bus driver, Takeda, the team dozes off during the long drive. They’ve been driving through the woods for hours now, after all, and it’s already gotten dark.
Little do they know that this drive was never meant to be this long, and that Takeda is horrendously lost.
It gets worse from there – when, disoriented by the darkness and tiredness, Takeda makes a mistake while driving. A mistake that results in the bus rolling down a slope.
Just like that, Team Karasuno is hurt and stranded in the middle of nowhere, struggling to survive. All they can do, except take care of their wounds and one another, is wait, and wait, and wait for someone to find them.
They wish they’d turned around when they still had the chance.

Haikyuu!! | Teen | Tsukishimi Kei/Hinata Shouyou
Tags: feelings realization, canon compliant (to a point), slow burn, pre-relationship, first year, nicknames, pining, missing scenes
Shoyou swallows something bitter. That was… even more underwhelming than he’d worried.
But it’s not just underwhelming. It’s a swirling spike of disappointment that twists unhappily at Shoyou’s stomach.
He fends it off. Because—so, what?
In Tsukishima’s words, they’re only sort of friends, anyway.
(Shoyou always wants more than what he’s given.)

shimizu kiyoko has always been out of reach for hitoka. she's so near, yet also so far. she was one of those shining stars in the sky, while hitoka was one of those silently wishing for it.
shimizu kiyoko.
"k-kiyoko—" she blurted.
"hi hitoka! late na 'ko, 2nd set na ba?"
tumango si hitoka. she couldn't help but stare in awe at her senior. shimizu was wearing a simple black blouse with white collar, and white skirt that reached her knees. her hair wasn't tied up, and she's wearing her glasses today.
she's always so beautiful.
"how are they?" shimizu asked, her eyes never leaving the players on the court with the same gentle eyes she used to have as she watched them before.
kahit na hindi tumigil ang tibok ng puso niya, inilipat niya ang tingin sa team. "same old same old." tumawa siya, saglit na na-distract habang inaalala ang away ni hinata at kageyama, maging ang insulto ni tsukishima. "yamaguchi has improved so much. nakaka-proud makita siyang ganito."
shimizu nodded. "i know. kung nandito lang si sugawara, maiiyak iyon sa tuwa."
she smiled. "the new players are adjusting well also. magagaling sila, and i can see the team going even further in the future."
"ikaw? kumusta ka?"
kung kanina ay na-distract siya, muling bumalik ang bilis ng tibok ng puso niya. she swiftly turned her eyes to shimizu's direction, only to be met by her eyes. kulang na lang ay magkaroon ng sound effects ng puso sa paligid niya habang nakatitig siya sa mata nito.
"i'm—i'm okay," she managed to say. "hindi ko kinalimutan ang mga turo mo, and those are what kept me going."
shimizu smiled, her eyes dropping before they met hers again. "that's good. and i can see you're doing so well on your own. i'm so proud i can call you my junior."
at nakuha na naman siya ni shimizu.
hindi siya sumagot; simple siyang ngumiti dahil hindi niya kayang magsalita. she was trying to hold herself back from saying things she might regret later on.
palaging ganito. sa tuwing kasama niya ito, kausap, katawanan—her heart was so full, sometimes it's getting heavy as it screamed. sa bawat interaction nila noon, kulang na lang ay sabihin niya ang nararamdaman niya.
and she held herself back. until now, pinipigilan niya ang sarili dahil alam niyang hindi naman pareho ang tingin nila sa isa't isa. masyadong malayo si shimizu.
"kumusta?" it's her turn to ask.
"hmm?" hinampas nito ang noo. "malapit na midterms namin, so iyon pinagaabalahan ko ngayon. medyo mahirap, pero kinakaya naman."
boyfriend—
hitoka, magtigil ka.
"that's... good to hear." she bit her lower lip.
hitoka could still remember the first time she knew. it was a random day, silang dalawa pa lamang ni shimizu ang nasa court at nag-aayos ng upuan para sa practice match nila.
"dito lang 'yan, hitoka."
"okay!"
dahan-dahan, isa-isa niyang isinalansan ang mga upuan. she could hear shimizu doing the same. nang matapos siya ay agad siyang tumalikod para magtanong ng gagawin nang makita itong nakaupo na sa makinis na sahig ng court katabi ng mga plastic.
"anong ginagawa mo?" tanong niya nang makalapit.
her mouth went ajar when she realized what she's doing. ini-isa-isa nitong ilabas ang mga pagkaing nasa tatlong plastic, at mukhang may binabasa.
"oh this? someone gave this bags of food para raw sa players. binabasa ko lang nutrition facts to make sure na okay sa kanila," she said, straight face, but with the most gentle voice.
oh.
saglit na natulala si hitoka. hindi niya alam kung anong sumunod na nangyari, basta ang alam niya ay lalo lamang siyang nahulog sa babae.
she's always cognizant to the fact that she's attracted to shimizu. pretty, smart, and so so kind. she's the type of girl you'd wish for. pero she thought it would be nothing serious.
until that day.
simula noon ay palagi siyang on edge. hindi niya alam kung pa'nong hindi siya nahahalata, pero nagpapasalamat siya roon dahil hindi niya kayang lumayo ang loob nito sa kaniya. she'd take whatever shimizu could give, kahit kapalit nito ang masaktan siya—mainggit sa mga taong malayang nakakapagbigay ng deserve nitong admiration.
masyadong malayo si kiyoko.
that's what she believed. kaya naman hindi niya alam kung anong nangyayari ngayon.
"hitoka... how are you?"
"what do you mean?"
nangunot ang noo ni hitoka nang tila biglang hindi mapalagay si shimizu sa tabi niya. pansin niya ang paghigpit ng hawak nito sa sariling kamay na nasa hita.
"are you seeing someone?" biglang tanong nito, her eyes suddenly went to her, and suddenly, their eyes were talking.
"pa'no kung ako?"
"kiyoko—"
"pa'no kung ako ang mag-aya sa'yo kasi gusto kita?"
masyadong naging malayo ang tingin niya kay shimizu. masyadong malayo na hindi niya napansing ito ang lumalapit sa kaniya. at ngayon, nasa tabi niya na nga ito.
umiling si hitoka. "hindi naman ako tatanggi."

Unconditional Love
haikyuu fanfic
My interpretation of the song told through a ftm trans Yachi coming to terms with his gender.
Inspired by Unconditional Love by Against Me!
Everyone had their secrets. Small ones like not having brushed your teeth last night or not knowing how to tie shoes until you were 14. Small ones that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things but would be embrassing if people knew. Or bigger ones that only those you trust can know. Bigger ones like mental illnesses that make you feel vunerable or your sexuality people would hate you for. Some people have even bigger secrets that no one but themself knows. Yachi had one of those secrets.
Yachi hated how she looked, which wasn't the secret - it was a secret, sure. Just, well, that's common, not liking how you look. Sometimes Yachi cut herself on purpose but that also wasn't the secret. Again, it was a secret but lots of people self-harm (and it's not like she's suicidal so does it really count?) No, those weren't Yachi's biggest secret. Her biggest secret was that she's trans. Well, maybe.
They didn't really know. She didn't want her hair short like a boy's but she'd tried it. They had put gum in their hair by the top so it had to be cut short. It was a bowl-cut and looked kind of awkward but it made them happy. Even happier when someone mistook them for a boy (on account of her wearing trousers, having short hair and her tits not having grown that noticeably at the time). They felt so happy. But having short hair isn't that fun when you can't braid it and mess with it so they'd decided to grow it out again. She didn't want short hair like a boy but she equally didn't want long hair like a girl. A purgatory of cutting and growing out her hair because it never felt right didn't make her happy either.
She didn't want her tits either. She had always been unhappy with them though never really knowing why. She had once thought she wanted bigger tits, that she was upset because they were small but her tits grew from AA cups to A cups to B cups and they still were unhappy with them. No one had mistaken them for a boy in a while and it was definitely her tits that were the culprit. It wasn't like she hated tits in general because they had seen tits on other girls and didn't hate them (she loved them, she was gay, God blame her) so it wasn't tits that was the problem. It was tits on her own body that was the problem. So they didn't want tits.
Her hips and legs were wrong too. Wide and fluffy with fat while the rest of her body was skinny. It made them want to puke sometimes. How she looked and how she walked was because she was a girl. They didn't like it. Didn't like that skirts showed her legs or that trousers outlined her hips. She didn't know if her butt was big but sometimes it felt like it was and sometimes she hated it and sometimes she remembered girls tend to have larger legs and hips and bums. It's where the body stores extra fat that might be needed in pregnancy. They remembered that from biology class.
She hated her body hair as well. But that was for a different reason than the others. Not because she had it but because she couldn't have it. Women shave (or wax) their legs and armpits and pussy. Any hair on your face was a no and it made her feel so self-conscious. She had to shave - couldn't not shave! She was be wrong then. Not normal. Weird. So she would ignore how happy she felt with leg hair and shave. Maybe she shaved less than other girls, spaced it out more, but she shaved her legs. She didn't shave their cunt though, no one would see so they could have this. She couldn't have chest or face or back hair for a different reason entirely - they just didn't have any. It didn't grow. At least she didn't need to worry about shaving it. Just long to have any instead.
So maybe they'd imagined being a boy sometimes. Wondered what having a dick would be like. Longed for a flat chest and a beard. It didn't mean anything.
She didn't want short hair like a boy. So it couldn't mean anything.
That was before she became a manager for the Karasuno Volleyball Club. Asahi had terrified them - even with long hair. And it's not like she didn't know men can have long hair and still be masculine. It had just never struck that close to them before. And he had fuzz on his chin! Dachi had thicc thighs too. Muscular, not fat like Yachi's though. Tanaka also had no hair on his chest (she knew from how much he whipped his shirt off), although he did have muscles to make up for it that Yachi didn't.
The thing with sports clubs is that they get close. Form strong bonds. Karasuno Volleyball Club even more so than others. Everyone was friends with everyone else - even Asahi didn't scare them anymore! She didn't really realise how much they trusted each other until Kinoshita had to sit out at one practice. Narita asked her to get a hot waterbottle for him while Kinoshita swallowed some tablets.
"Usually I'd ask Kiyoko but she's talking to the coach about him sitting out, I hope it's not a bother," Narita scratched the back of his head. "Not a bother - it's what I'm here for!" Yachi squeaked before scurrying off to the office. She had a hot waterbottle in her bag that would be nicer than anything the school had but they wanted to use a kettle the heat the water rather than waiting for whatever came out of the sinks to turn warmish. After that was sorted, she scurried back and handed it to Kintoshita.
"Uggrh, thanks," he groaned, "Narita lied before though, Kiyoko had her period last week and had to leave that day. You remember when she wasn't at practice last Wednesday, right? Yeah, thought the school would be a bit more helpful if it was you that asked then."
It took Yachi maybe longer than it should to realise exactly why Kinoshita needed the hot waterbottle. He was having period cramps like they do sometimes. And, god, it made her stop and consider what they actually felt. Because maybe it wasn't just self-conscious self-hatred that inspired self-harm. Maybe they were... No. He could be though...
The reflection that stared back in their bedroom wasn't right. It never was. Never had been. How he hadn't noticed they didn't know. The scars on their arms and legs had never fully faded from the last time she had cut (even if it had been months ago) but he ignored them. The only thing they wanted to hurt were the tits. Those godforsaken tits. No one had mistaken him for a boy since those tits had grown. ...grown.
So blood drew.
It felt better than they had expected. Something felt right in the anger that cut into her. He just wanted the tits gone. ...gone.
But still it was his biggest secret.
They didn't know why. It wasn't logical to keep it secret - the club wouldn't care. They'd accept him, help him and still care about him. Their mother would be accepting - she'd accepted his cousin being non-binary and that Yachi was a lesbian. So why couldn't she tell them she wasn't a lesbian but a trans straight man. He didn't know. His mother could help him to start transitioning. Would probably push Yachi to talk for himself more but would help. He could get rid of those tits, grow long hair and a beard, have all the body hair in the world and no one would care because he was a man, not a girl. And everyone that he cared about would accept and help him. He knew that. So why couldn't he just. Say Something.
Even though their love is unconditional it's still his biggest secret.

Preview: Tobio pulls out his milk and pops in the straw. He brings it to his lips for a sip—but a hand flashes out and snatches it from him.
Tobio gapes down at his empty hand. Then turns and gapes at Hinata. The scrub is chewing on the straw and smirking at him.
“Dumbass!” Tobio makes a grab for the milk. “That’s mine!”
Chortling, Hinata swats Tobio’s hand away and leans back, until he’s practically lying in Tsukishima’s lap. Tobio lunges towards him but Tsukishima shoves them both onto the floor.
“Ew. Go get a room if you guys want to tumble.”
Flushing, Tobio disentangles his limbs from Hinata’s and picks himself up off the ground. His hands twitch, but he doesn’t dare make another grab for the milk after Tsukishima’s comment.
“That’s my milk, dumbass,” he grits out instead.
Hinata sticks out his tongue, smugly. “Deal’s a deal, Kageyama-kun. I know math isn’t your strong suit, but surely even you know that ten is not eleven.”
“I literally—!” Tobio breaks off. He’d been about to retort that he gave Yachi multiple compliments at the end of practice and Hinata only counted them as one ... But Yachi is sitting right there. He doesn’t want her to think the compliments weren’t sincere, if she knew he was put up to it. As hard as they were for Tobio to get out, they were sincere.
“Fine,” Tobio mutters through clenched teeth. “Keep the milk.”
He’ll bring two tomorrow.
They settle back into their seats. Hinata seems to think it’s funny to crowd Tobio on the bench, pushing him up against Tanaka and throwing his leg over Tobio’s thigh. Tobio elbows him. Hinata elbows him back, then takes a long, obnoxiously loud slurp of Tobio’s milk. His face twists in disgust. “Ew. You drink plain milk?”
Tobio stares, non-plussed. “Course I do. What else would I drink?” “Chocolate milk, obviously.”
Tobio scoffs.
Yachi’s voice pipes up, across from him. “I like strawberry milk, personally!”
Tobio looks up at her, brows arcing in surprise. She’s smiling at him, brightly—which just makes his brows push up further. By now, Tobio is used to seeing Yachi’s bright smiles pointed at Hinata ... But he’s quite sure he’s never been their subject before.
Tobio looks down and takes to assessing his lunch items.
... Like he said. Eating lunch here just gets weirder every day.  --------------
“Hey, Miwa, have you started a grocery list for Wakano-san yet?”
Miwa looks up from her textbooks. She appears slightly startled at Tobio addressing her, but she smiles. “Yes, I have. It’s on the fridge if you want to add to it.” “Thanks.”
Tobio walks over to the fridge and locates the grocery list, pinned with a magnet. Next to it, there’s also a pen, hanging in a little magnetized pen holder. (Because Miwa has her shit together like that. It’s kind of annoying.)
Tobio pulls out the pen and jots down an item on the list. Chocolate milk.
Satisfied, he opens the fridge and grabs out one of his own superior plain milks. Popping in the straw, he sips it absently as he strolls over to the stairs. As he takes the first step up, however, a thought occurs to him.
Hm. Why not.Tobio walks back over to the fridge. Retrieving the pen, he adds: Strawberry milk.
