Historically-Inspired Witch’s Chatelaine or A Fancy Keychain
Tumblr media
In case you didn’t realize, I like a bit of Goth year round.  The châtelaine is such a contextualizing piece of history; carried by women and women only.  Keepers of locked doors and sanctums to which only they had the power to grant and deny access to others.  I’m sure you can make the connection between the serpent, knowledge, power and women, so I won’t waste your time by spelling it out.
What a whirlwind of a project.  I wasn’t sure, from the moment I thought it up, if I had the technical skills to execute such a piece.  It needed to be fantastical- check, but also functional; it needed to latch onto my belt, it needed to bear weight, it needed to withstand some amount of pressure, and it needed to have some way to connect all the moving parts to the main piece while not becoming an overly-heavy object.  I’m no engineer or can even remotely think like one.  The only way I can plan is to simply start. I am one of those people that lives by “I learn by doing.”  And the only way for me to know when something was working was if it didn’t break… and if it did break, well, it was an opportunity to learn what went wrong and how to fix it. Without making it sound like a perfect triumph, I’ll confess it is still a rather delicate object.  I would not trust myself to wear it as a prop without taking it off before moving an inch.
Tumblr media
Despite all the doing, the crafting portion wasn’t the only thing I was forced to navigate.
I wanted to get this project done a long time ago… for the reveal of the historically inspired witch gown (I think that’s obvious).  And I could make excuses and apologies, but the truth is, I didn’t feel like fighting against strict time constraints, unexpected events, health concerns and increasingly old technology.  The less I worried about inevitabilities, the smoother and more rewarding the journey became.  Especially because there were certainly a number of mishaps that I needed to use some problem solving skills––as in lots of super glue (most of the time).
Tumblr media
Without further ado- Let’s Craft.

Last Strawberries of Summer
Tumblr media
I feel like this came to exist both so very slowly and so, so quickly that Summer
was ending before I realized it.  We only have about 20 more days of Summer (technically- although these heatwaves might very well last into October) and I wanted to celebrate.  Although temperatures are unholy nowadays I remember when summer was fun for me. It meant laying about, having a cold glass of water or tea, outdoor meals, enjoying the company of friends before we all split off for another 10 months of school without such intense interaction or freedom.
Tumblr media
Additionally, summer is the sexiest time of the year, we show the most skin; we feel the warmth of the sun and the coolness of a breeze caressing our bodies; cold water making its way down to our bellies; beads of sweat rolling down the spine to the small of our back; or our own skin coming into contact with itself. I think in terms of mindset,
we are the most present in our bodies at this time.  It’s, in my opinion, the most sensual time.
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoy this one, I think It;s been in production for such a long time, I was happy to finally share it.  I think, you might agree, that I went through such an intense transformation.

::|::  Lessons hard learned are not soon forgotten ::|::
Tumblr media
Being squarely honest with you, I’m not a business person. My true passion is to create.  So I learn as I go. When I started, I had confessed I just dove in because there were questions I didn’t know I needed to ask. And now, with some difficult lessons, I understand what’s sustainable for my shop and what isn't.  So there will be a few changes happening in the shop, some of which I’m not excited about and others that I think might work better for everyone.
Lessons: SHORT VERSION:
I Learned to
Start Small and Build A Good Foundation first: donations are sadly on pause for the foreseeable future until MUXER is more stable.
To be practical and pragmatic: MUXER isn't able to  sustain discounts or giveaways :,( and pricing must reflect my labor and quality.
This is a Labor of Love: Quality over quantity. <3
I'm allowed to experiment, I hope you're down for that journey!
LONG VERSION:
1. Start Small With A Good Foundation:
When I imagined MUXER, I had the intention of donating to charities. But over the last year, I realized MUXER wasn't big enough nor did it have a solid enough foundation to support contributions well enough.  So as of 2022, I'm scaling it back, and starting at the beginning to take it one step, one goal, at a time.  It really saddens me to know that that goal is a long way off, but at my pace, it's the only way to keep that goal as an option at all.
2. Be Practical and Pragmatic:
Similarly to no. 1, I was doing too much too quickly without understanding how it would affect MUXER in the long run. I tried all the old tricks: discounts, giveaways, and experimented with price-points to understand where profit and marketability meet.  I learned that discounts and giveaways don't work for MUXER and my pricing structure needs to reflect my labor and the cost of my materials.  I'm always thinking with you in mind, it's hard to feel like pricing things fairly for myself is going to be fair to the consumer.  In order to make this whole endeavor work, I need to price it fairly for myself in order to reflect what handmade is worth.  I don't want to devalue the handmade tradition. So as of 2022, discounts and giveaways are a ways off in the future.  And the pricing will reflect the worth you're getting from my labor. I say this with all the best intentions and my utmost love.
3.This is a Labor of Love.
What this means is I'm not going to put pressure on myself to produce quantity over quality.  This isn't worth it to me if i can't take my time and craft quality items that'll be worthy of your investment.  In the past, I pushed myself to produce a number of items for release at the same time.  It was taxing and by the end of it all I felt extremely unmotivated to do it again.  This isn't to say I won't have goals, I have so many things I want to manifest, just that I need to do it the right way for me.
4. I'm Allowed To Experiment:
I love trying new things.  First I created tshirts, then journals and now earrings. I create when I have ideas and am inspired.  I want to branch out and see what brings me the most satisfaction. You may begin to see some unexpected developments and I hope you're willing to come on the journey with me.
These are the changes I'm implementing for MUXER.  Please feel free to give me your thoughts.  As always,
Con Mucho Cariño,
With Affection,
Maribel
Designer/Owner of MUXER

I was nominated by @lifecoachaubrey to tell you 8 facts about myself, I thought it would be a good opportunity to make it a reintroduction post as well! 8 facts about me 1. I’m a self taught artist and designer 2. My genetics say I’m also Jewish! 3. I recently became an Grand-Aunt!! 4. I’m an introvert but 5. I will chat your ear off if I talk about something I 💛💛💛 6. I met my now-husband in high school and we okay D&D together! 7. I can’t listen to music and make art because I’ll end up dancing instead 8. I’m thankful to have found an online community through MUXER 💛 My Name is Maribel Navarro. I design and create the items you see here. I started MUXER to honor my Mexican heritage, to contribute to causes I care about, and because of my passion for creating. I usually jump into making things and I love to try new things. I’m curious about the process and you may find I sometimes don’t make the same thing twice. I love the fact that I’m getting closer to being plastic free, that I am a slow-fashion option and that I was able to find a community of uplifting women through MUXER. I can’t wait to share what I come up with next. NOPALLI is the Nahuatl term for cactus; a classic shape in a classic rose quartz effect. Something playful in an elegant form keeps things interesting. Embellished with gold and fashioned to have a translucent, gem-like finish, this collection means to say you are the Elder Sister. The Elder Sister leads by example, is kind and understanding, intelligent and disciplined; when she imparts these gifts on others, she becomes quetzalli- valuable. In short, Elder Sister is a term that is translated from Nahuatl to mean "princess". ~BRISA~ BRISA means breeze in Spanish. Because I live in Southern California and because my family's home in Mexico is situated on the hot coast I relate the breeze to palm trees a lot. A breeze is not complete without the rustling of palm fronds. It's a like a pair that dances together whenever they have a chance. With BRISA, I've attempted to pair color and images in order to bring that dance to you. Blue translucent earrings, the sunlight will bring out other colors underneath the translucent layer, embellished with a light pink palm frond silkscreened image, these retro-looking earrings will bring the BRISA to you. #ancestors #mestiza #latina #latinas #bipocmaker #womanowned #womeninbusiness #mujeresemprendedoras #polymerclay #polymerclayearrings #create #createeveryday #createyourlife #polymerclaycreations #livecolorfully #makemoremagic #ancestral #azteca #latinas #latinafounders #latinafashion #latinafashionblogger #retro #handmade #handmadejewelry #creative #modernjewelry #mexicanjewelry #slowfashion #slowmade #slowdown (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9YbGplR4K/?utm_medium=tumblr

::|:: NEBLINA ::|:: About NEBLINA (Fog): NEBLINA means fog in Spanish and to me the fog can be a magical veil that joins two worlds. It the cooling factor that eases in the night through to morning. Neblina is an often-overlooked phenomenon that can be quite beautiful if we get the chance to see it before it dissipates into morning dew. In my view, fog is another aspect of the mist that brings on rainbows, Embellished with individually crafted florets and fashioned to have a translucent, light gloss finish. •• •• •• #muxerxdivinas #manifesting #ancestors #lawofattraction #womenstees #tshirt #sketchbook #smallbusiness #shopsmall #bipocmaker #personalgrowth #proudchicana #ecofriendly #latinas #latina #latinaowned #womanowned #latinafashionblogger #womensupportingwomen #spring #journaling #bodypositive #inclusive #sacredfeminine #divinefeminine #mothernature #motherearth #gaia #intuition #innergoddess (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9Sgwilsvr/?utm_medium=tumblr

You’re Already Magic
Tumblr media
I don’t believe in God—or a in “higher being” —or the idea that magical beings and spirits inhabit this world unseen by us.  But I want to very much even though I know believing is never going to happen.
Maybe it’s because of my atheism that I arrived at the need to create my own magic.
Not just on the page, but in my life, within my bubble of influence. Starting with myself.
I knew a long time ago I wanted to strive for a specific emotional and personal freedom that allowed me to be happy regardless of the negativity aimed at me or that floated around me.  But the hardest part was starting on the journey of consciously choosing my actions. It wasn’t until recently that began using resilience, compassion, and empathy to allow myself to slowly transform into a being that more and more resembles my Platonic “Form,” as it were.  I painstakingly came to the ecstatic realization that it is completely possible for someone to consciously shape who they are.  That, as an individual, a person doesn’t have to be the product of their upbringing, schooling, or environment.  We can choose our reactions and our thoughts- not just our outfits, metiers, or friends.
The value that introspection and reflection have has always informed my life and I’m excited-ELATED to see that it’s finally becoming a norm and a part of our zeitgeist.
For me, the magic of shedding the ego, of taking up the reins of our subconscious frees us from fears;
from mental though processes that are problematic.  We are then allowed to wander freely in a shared space for interaction sans the worry of judgment, or personal biases and presumptions becoming an issue.  As an added bonus, the perspective facilitates the identification of toxic people and the decision to shed them becomes much quicker.  I think this is because the more you grow your compassion, the more you extend it to yourself. So you know what and who you deserve.
But like any other skill, this all takes practice.
My interactions with different personalities, both in the personal and the professional realm, keep reminding me of three things. The first is, learning this new socio-emotional skill comes with making mistakes. You’ll realize after an interaction that, perhaps, you could have handled that better. Maybe you really didn’t need to say what you said or that you shouldn’t have been afraid to express your actual thoughts. But the important thing is that you learned from it, you took steps to heal and help others heal from the mistake (i.e. an apology) and you’re not going to let it define you.
Secondly, transforming myself using concentration in the form of conscious choice takes a level of endurance I was not sure I could keep up 100% of the time. And I didn’t. I often had enough of telling myself how to react I just needed a quick emotional release. I sometimes snapped at someone out of shear emotional exhaustion. It’s all normal, in my opinion. And while I still get emotionally exhausted, I am finding that emotional endurance can be cultivated and extended. This might take the form of noticing the boundaries of your compassion growing so that despite some emotional fatigue, you find your patience remains that much stronger. It all comes together when you don’t have to choose your reactions or actions because they’ve become your natural reactions. Until then, get comfortable with apologizing and the practice of truly moving forward.
Thirdly, the strongest emotion I’ve encountered with people is some form of fear. I won’t go into too much detail here, but I believe fear drives a lot of negative emotions, even anger. Righteous indignation is a reaction that I believe is motivated by fear; it’s a type of self preservation that cuts off communication and refuses to allow a shift in perspective because giving up the indignation is like becoming vulnerable. And that, I totally understand, is frightening. To make it more digestible, I’m keeping the scope to interpersonal interactions of the everyday sort (family, co-workers, classmates, etc.) and i think it’s where we can more effectively affect change.
Giving people a little understanding is like sharing an emotional space, and at that point you’re practicing the magic that is the freedom from fear (presumption, worry, or anticipation, etc.) Fears such as judging another person before they get the chance to judge you. Or the freedom from feeling embarrassed for making an honest mistake-because giving understanding extends to yourself as well.
So while I have a strong desire to find a connection with a higher being, my skepticism is stronger.
But my consolation in all of this is my actual belief that, collectively, we are already that higher power.
We just need to start using that Magic in our collective favor. It is my belief that we are each other’s hope, we have the power—even on a small scale—to create the world we’re waiting for. The more we’re open to understanding how alike we are, where our desires align and that we all have the ability to choose the person we want to be, the closer we get to becoming Magic.
