1. Hi. Looking for this fic wherein wwx tried to prank lqr and the elders by acting like a Lan. It backfired because they thought wwx was possessed by Lan An, especially when jwy visited cloud recesses (almost causes a war between jiang and lan). For it to end, wwx pretended to be Lan An and said goodbye then fake fainted (as if Lan An left wwx’s body)

2. Hey, I'm looking for a wangxianfic, in which wei ying and lan zhan are already married. Wei ying goes on a night hunt with the juniors and gets hurt. I think it was a cut on the stomach with poison. Lan zhan cares for him but wei ying is almost dying. Lan zhan is davasteted and says that he can't wait for wei ying again. It was a completed work and I think just 4 chapters. Please can you find the title? With kind regards @smarti1997

I'm not sure if this is something I think happened in a fic, or it really exists, but on the off-chance someone know what I'm talking about - the Sunshot Campaign ends differently with Wen Qing/Wen Ning in charge of the Qishan Wen, and as part of reparations(? Maybe?) the family vaults are revealed. Wen Qing warns people not to touch anything but JGS is too greedy and grabs something and dissolves in dust? And then WQ opens the real vault, the first was to stop thieves. Thank you in advance! @katonahottinroof

i once read a fic where LWJ and WWX were stuck in the Xuanwu cave and WWX was i think on the verge of dying but then something emerges from the waters and gives LWJ a deal that if he gives up his voices then as an exchange he can save WWX's life which LWJ obviously does so his voice goes away but by the end of the fic Wangxian go back to the cave where LWJ gets his voice back because he once again strikes a deal with that creature giving up his immortality or something that has to do with him being worshipped for gaining his voice back. was a one shot that i remember clearly and was on ao3 platform also thank you so much cause this blog has bought me my favorite Wangxian fics.

5. help. hey i am certain the fanfics in my memories exist but they keep on eluding me so there are these 2 fics:

A) the premise of this story was time travel where modern WWX travels back in time when other WWX is living with the wens in the burial mounds when LWJ comes to the borders with his modern counterpart and when modern wangxian meet they have a sweet reunion in which they share a kiss after that they are joined by the hip much to the mortification of OG wangxian. WY's parents are dead (car accident) but madam Lan's alive and he calls her mother or mom and modern them is engaged they also have their phones by which they click a photo and after coming to modern world WY sees that as proof that it actually happened. read it on ao3 muti chaptered (completed) with either 4 or 6 chapters 6 being maximum

B) in this one the main Lan fam is captured body swap between WRH and LWJ occurs and after LWJ realizes what has happen he commands that his body's head be severed which is currently housing WRH's soul and LXC and LQR are present to see that happening and grieve over LWJ not knowing WRH was the one who died and LWJ doesn't inform them about the body swap but tells the guards to take LXC and LQR to their rooms he keeps his own body's severed head in his room also. LWJ asks guards to bring him WWX which they do but injured and WWX sees LWJ's severed head and gets angry he also practices to be more like WRH so nobody suspects this is the most clear i remember there were also i think one appearance of WQ and some from WX and WC was on ao3 ongoing atleast when i was reading think over 5 chapter but under 10 the last i had checked (i was so curios to know what happens next but i lost the fic)

6. Hello! This is for ficfinder, I have lost track of two fics, and would very much like assistance finding them again!

A ) an Addams family style modern au. I cannot remember the title, but Lan Wangji enjoyed the taste of Hemlock tea, Wei Wuxian always dressed in gothic clothes, A-Yuan keeps getting possessed, Wen Ning would die temporarily every now and then then, and the reason Lan Wangji went to Yiling in the first place was to find his mother (madam lan is alive in this one).

B ) Young Prince Lan Wangji fled the palace to avoid an arranged marriage, and met an older Wei Wuxian and traveled with him, keeping his identity a secret. Lan Zichen catches up with them after Wangxian have spent the night together (bottom LWJ), and Lan Zhan is taken back to the palace. Wei Wuxian returns to claim his hand, revealing himself as Baoshan Sanren’s heir. Fix ends with them watching their kids play in Lan Zhan’s mother’s garden.

Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan never die. Yanli wants to spend time with Wei Wuxian and she makes some soup, but he gets spooked at some point and Wen Ning helps him run away back to the Burial Mounds???

At some point later on in the fic, Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli go to Cloud Recesses and they bring some food for Wangxian.

It was modern setting and maybe has cultivation still? wwx is a tattoo artist and I believe lwj saw some type dark energy out side his shop. So he went in and ending up saying he wanted a tattoo, wwx was who ended up talking to him about it and making him a design. I think it had something to do with bunnies and, then finally when the day came for lwj to get the tattoo. He’s like I’m sorry I never wanted one, wwx gets upset and tells lwj to pay him money in cash for compensation. It’s a fic about how when wwx comes back to life he meets lxc instead of lwj in Mo manor. he asks for lwj and that confirms to lxc that he is wwx and not Mo xuanyu and asks him to go back with him to cloud recesses where he takes care of lwj who couldn’t heal after the 33 leash punishment.

At first wwx doesn’t want lwj to know that it’s him. He brings him bunnies and helps him re learn how to play the guqin(he cannot play it due to his injuries and because he hasn’t practiced since he was punished) lan Yuan helps wwx to learn how to play it and lwj starts being more active

Lxc is happy and let’s wwx go to a small one week vacation but lwj gets worse that week, he also discovers mxy is wwx I think

I think in this fix, sizhui revealed that some of the people (madam Yu and others) are listed on lan zhan’s lists. Sizhui also mentions that lan zhan has several lists for different things. Wangxian Top Ten Fic Recs

So. I got into MDZS/The Untamed back in February, & I've sort of fallen into a Wangxian black hole from which I am not sure I will ever emerge. Thusly, I've been reading a ton of Wangxian fanfiction lately & have acquired quite a few favorites. Naturally I had to eventually compile a rec list lest I combust with all the barely suppressed love I have for this ship.

Now you lucky people get to reap the benefits of all my hard work because not only have I ranked my top ten, I am also including a bunch of honorable mentions because I'm ridiculous & have no self restraint because I'm such a kind & generous person. Note that the honorable mentions are not ranked & are listed in no particular order.

Fair warning, all of these recs are rated Explicit because I enjoy either a sprinkling or a flood of adult content with my fics. It's far from the focus of many of them, but it's there to varying degrees in each. Also, some of these fics cover some heavy content that may be triggering for some folks, so please do mind the tags & any authors' notes for your own peace of mind.

And with no further adieu, onto the recs!

1. Scars Where They Used to Be by CwythanWind (E, 58,467)

Thoughts: I lost count of how many times I cried in this fic. It was gorgeous in every sense of the word. The characterizations were phenomenal. Wei Ying’s pain was palpable, & the pining was agonizing. Lan Zhan conveying his love through poetry made me sob like a baby twice. The prose was just that beautiful. I can’t recommend this enough. As soon as I finished it I knew it was going to become my favorite Wangxian fic, & nothing has managed to top it yet.

2. Beneath Your Skin by Wrenwolf (E, 147,201)

Thoughts: I was sold on tattoo artist Wei Ying from the word go, haha, but Lan Zhan as an antiques dealer was also surprisingly on point. I go on about characterization a lot in these recs, but I have to tell you that Lan Zhan's here is one of my absolute favorites. I felt like I'd crawled into his skin & was just living there right along with him. And don't get me started on Wei Ying in this fic. I just.. fuck, I cried so much, y'all, & it was incredibly cathartic. Nie Huaisang was my favorite side character in this, & they were an absolute BAMF! You can't go wrong with this one. It's just stunning.

3. Pentimento. by orange_crushed (E, 72,966)

Thoughts: This fic was full of sentiment: regrets, longing, & so, so nostalgic. The love of art was apparent & beautifully on display here, & it added a richness to the whole thing. I cried several times during this from the empathy I had for both Lan Zhan's & Wei Ying's experiences (can you sense a theme with my favorites making me overly emotional? lol). The tone got heavy in places, but it didn't feel graphic or overwhelming at any point for me. The writing was just fantastic, & I've enjoyed a few more of the author's fics since I read this one.

Thoughts: I related to this fic on several levels because both characters are portrayed as neurodivergent in ways that felt very authentic, & I rarely see it done as well as it was here. I have ADHD, & Wei Ying's headspace felt extremely familiar, ha. Lan Zhan & Wei Ying's friendship was so lovely here, too. I adored their easy intimacy & how they were each other's favorite person before Wei Ying even realized he was in love with Lan Zhan. Oh yes, this is another fantastic oblivious Wei Ying/One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fic. The pining was perfect, & the overall sweetness of their relationship made this a very floaty/happy reading experience for me, personally.

5. Nothing But Trouble by brooklinegirl (E, 60,318)

Thoughts: Continuing with the theme of One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again, this was a hilarious & heady fake dating scenario fic. His cluelessness reached new heights in this one, & I about died when he came up with the idea that naturally he & Lan Zhan should practice things like kissing for authenticity's sake. (Oh Wei Ying, you sweet summer child... he kills me; can you tell?) I loved how matter-of-fact Lan Zhan was about the whole thing, too. I laughed a lot during this fic. I even blushed a couple of times, too! Highly enjoyable & a must-read for me.

6. you've ruined my life (by not being mine) by cicer (E, 132,713)

Thoughts: None of the parents in this fic are doing a good job, but hey, they didn't in canon either, in my not-so-humble opinion. It's not what I focused on in the fic, but the tags certainly amused me. I haven't come across many texting fics in MDZS, so this was a pleasant & welcome surprise. The whole fic wasn't done through texting, but their text exchanges were SO CUTE. Lan Zhan texted exactly how I thought he would in this, & it made me laugh every time. The pining was lovely, & when they finally got to see each other in person again in New York I was glued to my computer until I finished the fic. I adored the tone of this one. It was great & just a really fun read.

7. and so my heart beats wildly by lily_winterwood (E, 106,435)

Thoughts: This was one of the most original modern AUs I've seen & featured competitive cultivation that had a Hunger Games meets professional figure-skating competition vibe. It was wild, but it made sense when I read it, I promise. The author was very good at fleshing out their world, & I was fascinated by the concept. Wei Ying once again failed to notice Lan Zhan was in love with him, & his confusion over their interactions never failed to entertain me. I never get tired of their dynamic, y'all, & it was just perfect here. I highly recommend this one.

8. Falling to the Rhythm by Selenay (E, 128,916)

Thoughts: Ever seen So You Think You Can Dance or Strictly Come Dancing? This was basically that but Wangxian! Wei Ying was stunning as a professional dancer being handed a socially awkward, concert violinist Lan Zhan & having to teach him to dance in front of the nation for 12 weeks, & I absolutely loved Lhan Zhan in this. He was precious. The sexual tension during some of the dances was electrifying, & watching them fall in love over the course of the filming of the show was a delight to read.

9. Two Dollar Coffee by marizousbooty (E, 145,286)

Thoughts: I almost fell out of my chair laughing because how do you acquire an accidental sugar daddy?! Well, if you read this fic, you'll find out. One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again! Yeah, it's one of my favorite AO3 tags, so sue me, lol. The sex was obviously one of the highlights, which I am known to enjoy in a fic (don't judge me, Puritans), but it certainly wasn't the only thing that was well written here. I loved everything about this from beginning to end.

10. things that make it warm by yabakuboi (E, 33,327)

Thoughts: This fic hurt my feelings, not gonna lie. I cried ugly tears at the break up, but I've always had a hard time with reconciliation fics. It was very worth it, however. The way the fic covered their relationship growing & changing over time was very compelling, & a highlight of this for me was Wei Ying's relationship with the Wens, particularly A'Yuan. It was very sweet amongst an ocean of angst, haha. I read this in the span of a couple hours. Just couldn't be torn away. If you're a sucker for angst with a happy ending, then you might want to check this one out.

Honorable Mentions

The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane (E, 70,972)

Thoughts: This was so heartwarming I couldn't stop smiling over how adorable it was. Kid fics aren't typically a favorite of mine, but I do enjoy a really good one every now & then. This was one of the best I've read, to be honest. A'Yuan was the sweetest little angel, & he was so cute with Wei Ying spazzing out about every aspect of his care. Lan Zhan being the quiet, responsible source of reason & support was expected but of course always a welcome addition to the mix. Accidental Baby Acquisition isn't a tag I'd seen before, but it's a new favorite when it comes to Wangxian getting to be surprise parents together, haha.

undone (the spreadsheet song) series by spookykingdomstarlight (E, 282,452)

Thoughts: This is a two part series that tells the same story from each love interest’s point of view, a la Rivals by Reiya in the YoI fandom, which is one of my favorites of all time. Similarly, this story is also phenomenally written. I was sucked in immediately & read both fics over the span of like 3 days. I actually read Lan Zhan’s POV fic (the second in the series) in a single day. I was spellbound by the whole thing, couldn’t get enough. I highly recommend this. The characterizations are incredible, & the emotions are so intense I couldn’t help but feel everything right along with each of them as the story progressed.

My only word of caution is that if you have a hard time reading about Wangxian being intimate with people other than each other you might want to skim/skip those sections of the second fic like I had to. The author makes it fairly easy by giving a heads up in the author’s notes at the beginning of each chapter in which that occurs, which I very much appreciated.

Many happy returns. by orange_crushed (E, 25,470)

Thoughts: This fic started with a very serendipitous first meeting between businessman Lan Zhan & Wei Ying, who he mistook for the (non-sexual) escort he'd hired for the evening. I nearly died of mortification right along with poor Lan Zhan when he figured out his mistake. Him confessing this to Wei Ying was painfully awkward & hurt my heart, but fear not! We all know I can't handle a fic without an eventual happy ending, haha. Watching their instant connection develop into something more was such a treat. I loved this fic quite a lot for it being a quicker read for me.

Multiphonics by androkastia (E, 63,705)

Thoughts: Wei Ying was such a lovable disaster in this (as he often is, bless him). Him & Lan Zhan both being in the orchestra was a fun idea, & I loved the author's choice of the harp for Lan Zhan's instrument. I thought it was very different from the usual violin or cello choice I've seen previously but still suited him perfectly. I also loved his overall characterization, down to his fashion sense being tastefully eclectic when his style is usually portrayed as very stuffy & conservative. I really enjoyed this college/university AU, & I've read quite a few of them at this point. So obviously this one stood out.

No Compasses, No Signs by brooklinegirl (E, 36,041)

Thoughts: Ah, finally! A soulmate fic. A Temnurus rec list really wouldn't be complete without at least one. This was a modern AU, which made it especially fun when their soul bond inexplicably manifested as they literally collided with each other on the sidewalk. It was painful watching them fumble for answers to why they suddenly knew things about each other they had no way of knowing only moments before, but the sweet conclusion made it more than worth the temporary angst.

A Haunting Love by Selenay (E, 64,621)

Thoughts: This was another very unique modern with magic AU, & I was nervous because Wei Ying was a ghost haunting Lan Zhan's new house in the quiet little town he moved to in order to write his next novel. Naturally Lan Zhan became ensnared by the mystery surrounding Wei Ying's departure. This had a very romantic feel to it, intensely poetic in a way that I found very alluring. There were even thriller-esque moments towards the end of the story, so it had a bit of everything, all of it equally satisfying to read.

love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360,042)

Thoughts: This was an example of a cool MDZS-specific trope I hadn't seen before, & in it Wei Ying, the infamous Yiling Patriarch, was a cultivator who had achieved immortality (aka, he's OP as fuck but in a fun way). The great sects enlisted his help to win the Sunshot Campaign, & what did he demand in return? Lan Zhan's hand in marriage, of course! It was a fantastic slow burn in which poor Lan Zhan suffered the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband. An amazing & complex plot, chock-full of angsty goodness.

a place to hide (can't find one near) by yiqie (E, 76,091)

Thoughts: I'm giving y'all a heads up first thing that this fic pulled no punches when it came to the heavier subject matter covered in the tags & author's note. Some of the descriptions were fairly graphic, so please take care of yourselves when considering this one. That said, it was a powerful portrayal of someone suffering from mental health issues & the long & often complicated journey of healing. This one also happened to contain a love story so beautiful that I was brought to tears several times by Lan Zhan's patient & loving care for his most important person, nevermind all the times I cried at the sad parts! I found the emotional cost of those very much worth the payoff of their happy ending, which is why I just had to include this one.

Just You, Just Me (Just Us, Just We) by wincechesters (E, 19,777)

Thoughts: Lan Zhan thought his brother made him an appointment at an acupuncturist & was aghast when he discovered it was for a session with a professional cuddler instead! Enter Wei Ying, gratuitous cuddle therapy, & his usual chaotic charm. Poor Lan Zhan being so overwhelmed while also becoming hopelessly besotted made me laugh, bless his fragile little heart. This was an adorable & light-hearted fic that made me want to go back & reread it almost immediately, haha.

my age has never made me wise by idrilka (E, 63,439)

Thoughts: I absolutely loved this. It was pretty CQL (The Untamed) compliant & told the post-canon story of Wei Ying wandering alone as a rogue cultivator after the events of the show. Of course he was pining after his zhiji the entire time, so when he heard gossip that the Chief Cultivator might be married by summer's end it nearly undid him. The angst was excruciating, but at the same time, One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fics somehow always manage to be fun at the same time. I've read several post-canon, wandering Wei Ying stories, & this one was particularly good.

It goes like this: Jiang Cheng is standing among the young masters taken by the Wens, and Wen Chao is being an ass. JC notices a ripple of some sort in WWX and LWJ. (They have just been transfered from their older bodies to their young bodies for fix-it purposes.) Both of them irrate Wen Chao and he orders an attack on them ; they flawlessly and effortlessly strike back and kill them. It's a bloodshed. Jiang Cheng is gobsmacked. Lan Wangji loves his badass husband. Then they all go back to safety with the bewildered youths.

so a passing thought about post-canon sangcheng occurred to me & i would like to receive any wise counsel you'd like to give on my thought processes... 🙇‍♂️ they're a little disjointed. disclaimer that i havent read the novel in a while!

im not super convinced by the idea that nhs was able to control eeeeverything that occurred in his Great Revenge--i imagine a lot of it was incidental and opportunistic.

im not clear on whether jiang cheng would figure out that there was a masterminding aspect to the grand finale at the temple at all, bc while i think he's smart! he's also, like, so uninclined to overanalyse things that might uncover something painful for him (see: wwx's behavior post golden core transfer--unless you have to adjust for shixiong admiration/how jc places wwx on a competence pedestal? if wwx says he can handle it he can handle it, until he doesnt handle it so hard he dies. i guess.)

ANYWAY. i dont think jc would be friendly, or maybe he wouldnt like that he Was friendly with nhs if he thought nhs intentionally put jin ling in danger. im not sure if nhs DID! but im thinking in circles about whether jc would think that would have been the case. in my mind he is both endlessly capable of knee-jerk trust recindication (is that a word.) AND trust extended way past reasonable limits. but do you think that would be discussed (with jiang cheng loudly in tears about it in front of many rubbernecking witnesses, mdzs style?) at all? the most i can imagine is jiang cheng yelling obscurely around whether he can trust nie huaisang! clarifying details & inside voices are for the next generation.

i feel like there something to be said about how he trusts wwx with jin ling's safety, too...

this kind of doesn't have a conclusion im just interested in what you think of post canon sangcheng en generale-- it feels like a very different relationship from anything i can imagine in like... cloud recesses era. they're both miserable i think 😀 but actually post canon jiang cheng is doing better than usual than he has been for a long time, in a sense, and nie huaisang is probably thinking he should be doing better.

ok firstable i must address "rescindification" bc it compelled me and apparently the noun form of "rescind" would be "recision" or "rescindment". heeheehee

now my thoughts on the matter:

2019 me wouldn't have agreed with this but remember 4-5 years ago i was only a college sophomore and was less capable of independent thought. since i was more caught up in fandom back then i generally went along with the headcanon that NHS Planned Everything, especially since it gave him more BAMF-ness(??) to, i guess, make up for the fact that he's not a "strong" cultivator. i would Like to delete the fic i wrote about it then but people like it a lot and i'd feel bad just taking it down. it's kinda like my sorrows of young werther (in that goethe regretted his first published work. not that im like goethe ew)

2023 me obviously thinks that's kinda eeehhh and i agree with you more now bc (flips through my memory of Hot Strategist Tips) no plan survives contact with the enemy. nhs wouldn't have been as effective if he had clear strict play-by-plays from the get-go. i think overplanning is what got jgy, because he kept stacking plots to cover his tracks but nothing makes a crime obvious quite like a cover-up

(unrelated question: if you're stark naked in the street, do you cover your ass or your balls? the correct answer is, you cover your face.)

as jgy's narrative foil and winner of that year's political oscars, nhs wouldn't make those exact same mistakes. not to mention, his strength (i think) is in recognizing patterns and doing the least amount of work for maximum effect--the hallmarks of the "lazy" (efficient) genius. plus it's not like he was starved for opportunity (again, bc jgy really was doing too much..... he really could've not gotten caught if he would just focus on the damn infrastructure)

also re:jc yes you're right my man's the king of repression and sublimation lol the whole "who is the REAL mastermind" would be the LEAST of his problems right nyeow!!! he has to help his nephew secure the succession and keep those scheming little rats of jinlintai away from jl, THEN he has to reckon with the fact that his brother is back, which comes with 15+ year old unopened baggage. wouldn't it be funny if he's like, an old retiree before nhs even tells him "yeah it was me lol" and that's finally the thing that kills him LOL sorry

ok that aside let's imagine a scenario where jc gets a whiff of an inkling of an idea that NHS Risked JL's Life (whether he did or not is irrelevant in this case). i'd like to believe that as an older sect leader, like yeah sure emotionally he's stunted like evel kneivel* but at the very least he should have the presence of mind not to scream at a fellow sect leader in the streets about Serious Accusations. (he is not as logical about wwx in canon because that's his big brother and no younger brother is ever logical about his big brother. also he knows wwx well enough that he can trust wwx Wouldn't Endanger Kids)

*get it. bc evel kneivel was a stuntman

imo jc would go in circles thinking "but no..... nhs wouldn't do that" then "but that's what i thought about jgy too......." and then working himself up to a froth. this will probably result in the most intense assessing death glares and some shady little quips in public. coin toss whether jc would decide to confront nhs about it privately. at least for as long as jl hasn't fully settled in on the role yet, i highly doubt jc would let his guard down for anyone, even nhs. maybe wwx

postcanon sangcheng...... keep in mind i have shipper goggles on. but they're not getting married babes im sorry if i'm keeping it realistic they both have Duties to fulfill and they live in a Society where they don't have time to...... governance is not just Paperwork, it's their lived reality and not everyone has the privilege of a living family to hold down the fort while one goes off traveling (@ lwj, but he can do whatever he wants forever). not saying that they'll get married to other people and have babies, mind you. especially in societies based on martial strength i think it would be less important to have an Unbroken Bloodline than it is to pass down sect techniques

at the end of it IF there's a romance then they're living off of stolen time, sneaking around during hunts and conferences. and i highly highly doubt it'll be a soft epilogue my loves they are two jagged broken people who have given up too much and gotten back so little. they are not gonna make each other better, but hey the consolation is that they also can't make each other worse! at least they'll have someone else who somewhat Understands what it's like. "miserable but not alone" is a boon if you've lost everything else that mattered

My AO3 Wrapped

Happy new year for us all, and that 2023 brings us again many good fandoms, fics and friends! <3

I saw some people doing an ao3 wrapped of fics they wrote and things like that, and I decided to make one of recs.

I cannot count how many fics/words I read in 2022, but it was *a lot*. According to my ao3 page, I have 1200 fics in my History, I know I haven’t read them all, some of them I opened and saw it wasn’t for me, some of them I tried reading and didn’t like, but still, those are 1200 fics there.

I usually read Hinata centric fics, but this one was something else. It’s a Sakusa Kiyoomi centric fic, and it made me cry. It’s about his understanding and acceptance that he is aro, and how he sees the world. It is beautiful. Have tissues in hand.

This fic has *promise*. The first chapter alone has Xie Lian’s pov, of him meeting Wei Wuxian, and it’s great. There’s just so much there. I love how they wrote Wei Wuxian, and Hualian both. It’s a wip, but so worth it!

Liushen goodness! This was the year I discovered them, and this fic is just the sweetest!!!!! The fluffiest of fluffs. 5+1 times that LQG thought SQQ was cute. And SQQ was so cute, and the whole story is adorable! I loved the banter they had going on! This is also about SQQ being himself, having some modern attitudes.

First of all, this fic was written for me by my favourite writer, so need I say more????? Modern Au with cultivation. WWX is a cultivator, and one of the best ones, LWJ is not a cultivator, nor does he know this world exists. And they meet when WWX saves LWJ’s son, a-Yuan from an Abyss. This is so good. If you know Vrishchika, you know her characterization is *good*, and we have absolute BAMF WWX. Amazing!

Ohhh, this was also the year I discovered BNHA. And this was one of the first fics I’ve read. Canon divergence, and Izuku actually has his parents quirks (but because of how abused he and his mother were by his father, he doesn’t want to use it). He still gets OFA, and then when he gets to UA things start changing. It’s a beautiful story, it’s sad, and Izuku suffers a lot in the beginning, but there’s so much growth. And his and Todoroki’s relationship is beautiful.

June:

A Secret Never Shared by Vrishchika - MDZS - @vrishchikawrites

This fic should be on the list much earlier than June, because I had the privilege of betaing, and I had read it long before and reread it and loved every word of it. BAMF Wei Wuxian, who ascended instead of dying on the first siege. As always, perfect characterization, WWX is still WWX but also more, because he is a god now, and it changes people. This is a story of those 13 years where he would have been dead in canon. Also, the best a-Yuan.

BAMF Izuku!!!!!! On my bookmarks notes I say: “The teachers quickly realize how glad they should be Izuku has always wanted to be a hero.”. UA has an activity they have every year where they divide the hero classes into heroes and villains and they have to compete. Izuku is chosen to be the villain leader, and Bakugou the hero leader. This is a story about how intelligent and smart Izuku is, and how he can be a very good leader.

Bonnie & Klein by surveycorpsjean - BNHA

Where the porn is the plot. Izuku and Bakugou, already pro heroes, are sent 10 years to the future, where they meet their future selves (who are married). The smut is fantastic, but it’s all about the feelings, and about loving yourself, and accepting who you are (in very literal ways sometimes). Super tender, loving and also very hot.

A love letter to Izuku (is what i’ve written on my bookmarks). This is a story where All Might chose Izuku so much earlier, when he was still a kid, so Inko is also involved. The relationship between them all is wonderful, they are really a family. This is a Izuku who is prepared and well-trained. Wonderful.

This is a canon divergence fic, where after White decides to take over Black’s life, he leaves home. Things change accordingly, he has to come clean a bit before . SeanWhite is perfect, good communication.

Canon divergent because Porsche remembers the first kiss at the pier, and decides to tell Kinn he does. Everything changes from that conversation forward. Absolutely gorgeous story. Great communication. Porsche stands his ground, and they learn to separate Kinn boss from Kinn boyfriend. I love their relationship very much. Really good communication, I need to say that again. The relationship is very healthy. And the smut is scorching.

December:

Erased Potential by theslytherinpaladin - BNHA

It’s a wip, but there’s over 230k words to read, and it is that good. Izuku knows that being quirkless will make becoming a hero much harder, that’s why he decides (when he’s in middle school) to ask Eraserhead to train him. He does, and things change accordingly. Smart Izuku, Dadzawa (without All Might bashing). Great fic!!!

i know this can be seen as somewhat controversial but i get really sad reading fics sometimes (usually time reversal fics) when the author will basically just sum up the grand total of wwx’s usefulness in his demonic cultivation

like idk, the man is canonically a genius is he not?? and he was able to go head to head w/ lan wangji at 15 with his golden core, and since usually in the time travel fics he keeps his core suffice to say he would be pretty impressive, not to mention his whole inventor’s shtick

but constantly his only feature noted is the resentful energy! grrrr!!

give the guy some credit!!!

Summary: Wei Wuxian gets caught sneaking into Cloud Recesses. But since he can't tell the truth - that he's just here to deliver his teacher's most recent love letter to her soulmate who's stuck in a cave - he tells a lie instead. He says that he's a Jiang disciple that had arrived late and so had snuck in through the gates. He hadn't expected the lie to work, sure that it would unravel as soon as they found a Jiang to verify it, but instead Jiang Yanli backs up his story, and even adds to it. Which is how he ends up masquerading as the first disciple of Lotus Pier while trying to figure out how to get out of Cloud Recesses without anyone discovering that he's the disciple of Baoshan Sanren.

Mojo's comments: I am so charmed by this wwx… as is EVERYONE else who crosses his path. He spends his childhood running up and down Baoshan Sanren's mountain, getting into trouble, and expands his territory to include stumbling across Lan Yi, whereupon he takes it upon himself to begin carrying love letters back and forth between his two immortal 'Aunts'. Which is how he winds up getting busted by lwj and lying that he's the Jiang Sect's first disciple. Author loves the women of mdzs, and it's delightful to see how strong and clever they can be, from jiang yanli to wen qing to the immortals. POV is more or less everyone, and it's hilarious to see their interpretation of events based on how much they've figured out about all the things wwx is trying to hide. Wwx is bamf (he knows all the sects' sword forms which is so sexy of him: or at least lwj thinks so!) and powerful and determined to protect all his newfound families when the Wens come a'knocking.

“It’s up to you,” Lan Qiren said to his brother, who he hadn’t spoken to in years – not since Lan Wangji had gotten old enough to pay his respects without assistance. “You don’t have to do it; it is not something I would force anyone into, not in a million years. But I will be doing it, and I can’t help them both by myself. I need you.”

Qingheng-jun stared off into the distance, his eyes blank and vacant.

“We’ll die,” he finally said.

“Probably,” Lan Qiren said, because it was true. “I would even say that it is more likely than not. But…they’re your sons. Your legacy.”

That made his brother finally shift his attention to him. Lan Qiren wasn’t sure if it was the appeal to the connection they had, the fact that Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji were the only things his brother had left of his wife, or merely the appeal to his vanity, the thought of what he would leave behind in the world – he who had been so promising and so praised and yet accomplished so little, all through the consequences of his own decisions.

Still, it didn’t matter to Lan Qiren why his brother agreed to do it, only that he would do it. Lan Qiren wouldn’t, couldn’t, force a decision of this magnitude, but that didn’t mean he didn’t believe wholeheartedly that it was the right thing to do.

The only thing to do.

“How would you accomplish it?” his brother finally asked, and Lan Qiren couldn’t help but exhale in shaky relief, the fear that had been consuming him finally given vent – he’d agreed, then. He’d do it.

His brother had finally, finally, at the end of all things, lived up to Lan Qiren’s expectations.

“There was a promising medical paper presented in one of the discussion conferences,” he said, deciding to omit the fact that the author of the paper was a Wen, and a young woman, and that he hadn’t even asked her to do it as of yet. They could deal with that after they dealt with the more immediate problem. “It raised the suggestion that a golden core could be transferrable from one individual to another, particularly if the donor and recipient both cultivated in a similar tradition – it was a throwaway reference only, but having reviewed the evidence I believe it is possible, especially if the donation is given voluntarily.”

He also omitted to mention that such a donation could only be done with someone of exceptionally strong cultivation, as no one else would be able to endure the agony necessary to persist, awake and focused, through the entire lengthy surgical process. There was no need to mention the obvious.

“Wholly untested, then.”

“Of course it’s untested,” Lan Qiren snapped. “Who in their right minds would agree to donate their golden core, of which any person can only have the one in their lifetime, in any circumstances but the most dire? My nephews, your sons, are lying in some rotten hut in the middle of the woods, comatose and unaware – and I was the one to put them in that state myself, all so that they don’t wake up in time to realize that their golden cores, their futures, have been destroyed. I want them to wake to a world where that isn’t the case.”

“Even if we do what you suggest,” his brother said, “the world they wake into will be one where the sect they would have inherited has already been destroyed.”

“You cannot say that our sect has been destroyed as long as it has people to continue it,” Lan Qiren disagreed. “If they are restored, our sect lives on…it’s not just their futures at stake here. It’s all of ours – you, me, our ancestors, everything that was put to flame and sword by the Wen sect.”

The attack on the Cloud Recesses hadn’t been a warning the way it had been when the Jiang sect was burned, their sect leader and his wife gravely injured, both heir and head disciple captured and brought to the Nightless City while the daughter had fled with their sect treasures. No, the Jiang had been able to start rebuilding despite that, and that meant that the Wen had learned their lesson. The attack on the Cloud Recesses had been comprehensive, complete; it had been a deliberate extermination aimed at eradicating their entire way of life. If Lan Qiren hadn’t learned from the lesson of the Jiang sect and, in secret rebellion against his own sect elders who insisted that there was no danger, sent away many of their junior generation into hiding along with the contents of their library, they would have nothing left.

But it was all for nothing if Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji didn’t make it. If they lost their cores or died, that spelled the end of the main family line of their sect. Sure, a cousin could take over, one that shared their surname, and they could keep up the traditions Lan Qiren had so painstakingly preserved, but it still wouldn’t be the same.

In the face of that…

In the face of that, what use was a golden core to Lan Qiren, who was unmarried and likely to remain that way for the rest of his life, or to Qingheng-jun, who would never again remarry? They had both put everything they had, all their hopes and dreams and future, onto the children that Lan Qiren had raised on his brother’s behalf. They had given them everything. What was one more thing next to that?

It was only…

“Is it really worth it?” Qingheng-jun asked. “Our lives for theirs – that I could agree to, and readily, too. But to give our lives, our cultivation, for just the possibility of success…I’m not sure about that.”

Lan Qiren put his hands behind his back to hide how they were clenched into tight fists, the knuckles white. He had only one golden core to give. If his brother didn’t agree, he would have to pick which of his nephews would wake up whole, and which one crippled.

He would have to pick.

“Please, xiongzhang,” he breathed. He couldn’t force his brother to do anything he didn’t want to do. He wouldn’t, he couldn’t, and anyway it would be pointless. He’d never before swayed his brother’s decisions on anything, not once in his life. But he still had to ask. “Please.”

A long moment of silence.

An eternity.

And then –

“All right,” Qingheng-jun finally said. “All right. Let’s do it before they wake.”

“The Lan sect is doing remarkably well, all things considered – Zewu-jun and Hanguang-jun are among the most impressive generals in the Sunshot Campaign, even with the disadvantage of having to revive their sect from having lost almost everything. They don’t call them the Twin Jades for nothing!”

“No, to be sure, the way they’ve carried on in the face of such tragedy is impressive. After the massacre at the Cloud Recesses, with such heavy losses…”

“Mm, indeed. I heard that they fled along with their father and uncle, carrying with them the most sacred of their sect books – of course they were undoubtedly doing most of the work there. I heard their father died of the injuries he’d incurred before they ever woke, and their uncle was in a similarly terrible state.”

“Teacher Lan? Oh, it’s so sad, what happened with him…”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, the Wen sect was chasing them down, of course. I heard he sacrificed himself to distract the pursuers from his nephews to ensure their escape, knowing that in his injured capacity he would only act as a burden slowing them down, and Wen Chao was so angry at missing his chance at the Twin Jades that he threw him into the Burial Mounds!”

“No! That’s terrible!”

“Now, fellow cultivator, I don’t know if that’s true – I heard that Teacher Lan was seen in the Lan sect camp as recently as half a month ago. How could he be there if he got thrown into a place as vile as the Burial Mounds…? You shouldn’t spread rumors.”

“Who are you to talk about rumors?! You’re the one talking about terrible curses, corpses rising to fight in battle, and other such atrocities…”

“Those aren’t rumors, I saw them with my own eyes! Fierce corpses, vicious, murderous, seething with resentful energy. And they weren’t fighting just anyone, they were fighting the Wen sect only – someone was controlling them.”

“Are you suggesting that there’s, what, some sort of demonic cultivator out there supporting the Lan sect? Ridiculous.”

“No, I’ve heard it too! I’ve heard that they play a phantom guqin, the tones of it echoing in the night. They say that this demonic cultivator acts as the blackened shadow of the regular sect, and no one knows who it really is – they keep themselves back, hiding in the dark like an assassin, and heavily cloak themselves whenever they need to go out onto the battlefield…”

“Now that’s ridiculous. Whoever heard of a demonic cultivator trying to hide what they’re doing? Aren’t they all arrogant and self-centered, reckless, unbearably bloodthirsty?”

“Not this one, apparently…”

“Well, demonic cultivator or not, as long as they’re killing strictly Wen-dogs, what do I care? The sooner we bring down the sun, the better. Best of luck to them, that’s what I say!”

“I’ll drink to that!”

“Wait,” Wei Wuxian said, goggling at Jin Guangshan and not caring one bit that he was being incredibly rude by interrupting the other man’s announcement, nor the fact that he was implicitly challenging Jin Guangshan on his own home territory, being as virtually the entire cultivation world had returned to Lanling City for the feasting following the Phoenix Mountain hunt. “Wait, wait, I’m sorry, are you trying to tell me that you think Teacher Lan – and just to make sure we’re being precise here, we’re talking about rule-abiding, rigid, stubborn, boring old nerd Lan Qiren, the one who used to lecture me all the time about even thinking about something unorthodox – is the Lan sect’s secret demonic cultivator?!”

Everyone acknowledged by now that they had one, of course.

It was impossible not to, even though the demonic cultivator had started out in a very limited, one might even say surprisingly restrained, fashion, restricting themselves to only doing things in defense of the Lan sect’s back line – and then eventually their front line, but still largely in a defensive posture, and almost exclusively using corpses of unknown antiquity. It wasn’t until later, when things had gotten more desperate, that they’d started being more aggressive, using the corpses as offensive weapons, resurrecting the fallen soldiers of the Wen sect against their own friends and allies…it was clear that they tried whenever possible to remain scrupulous about not using their own people, not just Lan but anyone on their side in the Sunshot Campaign, but it was also equally clear that demonic cultivation was an imprecise art, and sometimes they couldn’t help it.

Wei Wuxian had been crazily curious to meet this demonic cultivator more or less from the very first moment he’d heard of him.

Everyone knew the Lan sect was associated with them and that meant they of course knew who it was – if nothing else, the Lan sect’s strict practice of taking time to play soul-calming melodies and other songs of liberation following any incident of demonic cultivation use had made that clear, though it had also helped reduce the criticisms of the practice – and yet Lan Wangji, no matter how close he and Wei Wuxian had gotten during the war, still refused to say.

Though…Wei Wuxian supposed he understood why, if the demonic cultivator was in fact Lan Qiren.

That would, however, require the demonic cultivator to be Lan Qiren.

“Putting that aside,” Nie Mingjue said, frowning severely even as the rest of them gawked, “what’s this nonsense about him suddenly and for no reason killing your sect disciples and kidnapping the remaining Wen sect members?”

“It’s not nonsense,” Jin Guangshan said. “It’s true. There are witnesses.”

“The only part that’s nonsense is the suggestion that he would do so without a reason,” Nie Mingjue said impatiently. “This is Teacher Lan we’re talking about!”

Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but nod in agreement.

He wasn’t the only one in the hall nodding, either.

“Anyway, even if Teacher Lan really were to turn to murder, he wouldn’t have left witnesses,” Jiang Cheng added, wrinkling his nose. “Be thorough in all that you do, do not be haughty or complacent. Do you know how many times I had to redo my homework before he accepted it? And you’re expecting me to believe, what, that he’d be sloppy about it or something? Teacher Lan? I can’t believe it.”

Even more nods around the room, especially fervent among the younger generation that had attended Lan Qiren’s classes.

Jin Guangshan scowled, having clearly expected a bit more deference to his explanation.

“This is easily solved,” he said testily. “Is it not one of the Lan sect rules not to lie? I put to Zewu-jun and Hanguang-jun – is your uncle a demonic cultivator or not?!”

Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji exchanged glances.

Wei Wuxian’s eyebrows shot up. No way…

“Shufu has always sought to act in a moral and upright manner, no matter the cultivation path he uses,” Lan Wangji said, his voice flat, and the room exploded into whispers. “A path that he has only chosen due to what happened during the course of the war, when our ability was at its least and our desperation its greatest, and which he strongly advises others against under any normal circumstances.”

Lan Qiren is a demonic cultivator, Wei Wuxian marveled, and then promptly got annoyed: And Lan Zhan didn’t tell me?! I had so many ideas I wanted to pass along and converse about! It’s unfair!

“I concur with Wangji,” Lan Xichen said. “I believe in my shufu’s wisdom and restraint. If he took the Wen sect remnants unexpectedly and by force, I am certain he had a good reason for his actions. We will pursue this matter…”

“You will do no such thing,” Jin Guangshan thundered, cutting him off, and Lan Xichen looked taken aback by the unexpected rudeness. “The culprit is your kin and your senior, and everyone knows how the Lan sect honor their elders. How can we trust that you will impose justice in a fair and equitable fashion?”

Lan Xichen looked offended now, and rightfully he should be – Nie Mingjue certainly looked almost apoplectic on his behalf – but Wei Wuxian could see a fair number of heads nodding in the crowd. The Lan sect was known for its devotion to justice, that was true, but this was the sect leader’s uncle, who had very nearly sacrificed his life for them during the war. Even if Lan Qiren really had committed a crime, how could Lan Xichen of all people bear to hold him responsible for it? To do so would be to be unfilial, to fail to do so unjust – he was in a really tough position. He’d look bad no matter what way he picked.

That was probably what Jin Guangshan intended, actually.

Wei Wuxian elbowed Jiang Cheng, getting his attention, and whispered furiously into his ear.

A moment later, Jiang Cheng loudly cleared his throat and stepped forward. “This is easily solved,” he said, letting his voice carry. He’d really grown into the role of sect leader over the course of the war, ever since his parents had been forced to resign from the battlefield on account of their injuries. “Teacher Lan is famous for being thoughtful and proper in his conduct, as well as eloquent in his words – if there is an explanation to be had, surely he would be able to provide it. Why don’t we all go to wherever he has gone and ask to hear that explanation?”

Jin Guangshan didn’t like that, Wei Wuxian could tell from his expression, but there wasn’t anything for it – the momentum was with them, with Lan Xichen immediately agreeing, saying that his uncle would undoubtedly welcome being examined by his peers in the cultivation world, and Nie Mingjue adding his own (very loud) voice in support of the idea. All the others in the hall were also nodding and talking along, and the overarching tone was that of curiosity, mixed with a little bit of scandalized amusement, but not rage.

“Thank you for your assistance,” Lan Wangji said, appearing at Wei Wuxian’s side. Wei Wuxian had no idea how he’d even had the attention to spare to notice what Wei Wuxian had done.

“Think nothing of it, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian said, then nudged him a bit with his elbow. “Just tell me you passed on some of my better ideas to your uncle during the war, will you? Even if you didn’t, haha, I would still like to flatter myself…I still want to talk to him about it, you know. Some of the melodies he uses are so interesting!”

“You are likely the only one who takes such a circumspect opinion of my uncle’s practice, for which I thank you, but I would recommend once again against too much enthusiasm for the subject,” Lan Wangji said, voice heavy. “Demonic cultivation is a disfavored path for a reason, and though my uncle has sought whenever possible to minimize the effects on the temperament and the negative consequences, it is difficult.”

“Why does he do it, then?” Wei Wuxian asked, genuinely curious, and was surprised by the expression of genuine pain that passed over Lan Wangji’s features. “Lan Zhan?”

“He doesn’t have a choice,” Lan Wangji admitted quietly, his voice so soft that Wei Wuxian could barely hear it. “He sacrificed his orthodoxy for my brother and I, yet the injuries he incurred, whether there or – or later – are quite dire. He is not so young as we are; without some form of cultivation, any form, he will more than likely die. And the war…”

“I understand,” Wei Wuxian said. They’d come so close to losing Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan – he’d never gotten on with Yu Ziyuan, the two of them always butting heads, but they’d fought side by side against the Wen sect. The thought of something happening to her still made him see red; he couldn’t even imagine how it must be for Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen, who had always been close to their uncle, who had raised them all on his own, and then sacrificed himself to save them, being tortured and thrown into the Burial Mounds…no, it was all quite clear to Wei Wuxian what happened. Better demonic cultivation than nothing, that was to be sure, and Lan Qiren really had been absolutely invaluable during the war. Without him, the Lan sect might have perished. “And the Wen sect remnants? Any idea why he took them?”

“I do not know. But I trust my shufu.”

“Oh, certainly. I’m sure Teacher Lan has a good explanation,” Wei Wuxian said confidently. “We just need to hear it.”

“Thank you for taking the time to seek me out,” Lan Qiren said to the ravening mob currently being held immobilized at the bottom of the Burial Mounds. Technically they had come to listen to him, as the quick and frantic secret letters he’d received from his nephews, Nie Mingjue, and Jiang Cheng had all said, but someone had clearly been inciting them on the way, and they’d been all but ready to lay siege by the time they’d actually gotten here.

He was choosing to ignore that.

“While I have your attention,” he said, “and before we get to the question of the disposition of the Wen sect remnants, I was hoping to take a few moments to dispel a few unsubstantiated myths regarding the use of resentful energy and of my particular brand of demonic cultivation in general.”

They were staring at him.

Good.

“Now,” he said, and gestured for Wen Ning to unfurl the large scroll he’d prepared in advance. There were several, but Wen Ning had enthusiastically agreed to hold them up in sequence for him. “I’ve put together a presentation. If you’ll please pay attention to the board…”

Somewhere in the audience, he thought he could hear Wei Wuxian laughing.

“I don’t know what the rest of you were expecting, but this is completely what I expected,” Wei Wuxian said gleefully. “I told you he was a nerd!”

“Please desist from referring to me that way,” Lan Qiren said censoriously. “Immediately, if you please.”

“Oh, can’t you lighten up?” Wei Wuxian complained, absently looping an arm over Lan Wangji’s shoulders. “We’re celebrating a glorious victory today! You got absolved, Jin Guangshan’s face got dragged into the mud, Wen Ning – who’s great, by the way, I can’t believe I nearly forgot that we became friends back in the Nightless City – Wen Ning and his family are in a safe place now…now can we talk about how you’ve gotten demonic cultivation to work the way you have?”

“I don’t think you can call anyone else a nerd,” Jiang Cheng commented, rolling his eyes. “You’ve been loudly calling for an academic conference on the subject since you first heard about it.”

“Well, yeah, but still…”

“Probably for the best it wasn’t Wei-xiong that figured it out first,” Nie Huaisang opined. “I mean, just think about how that would have gone, it’d have been terrible!”

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?”

“A fascinating exploration of the importance of tone in presentation,” the newly dubbed Jin Guangyao murmured. He’d only been invited to the victory party on account of his sworn brotherhood with Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen, but he seemed somewhat relieved to be there – probably grateful to be anywhere but back at home where Jin Guangshan was no doubt raging over his failure to turn the cultivation world against the Lan.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Wei Wuxian complained. “What’s wrong with me being a demonic cultivator? I’m brilliant, charismatic…”

“Arrogant, reckless, and used to suffering no real consequences to your actions,” Nie Mingjue put in, voice dry, and there were nods all around. “You don’t know how to back down, and that would make people fear you.”

“Whereas no one fears shufu,” Lan Xichen agreed, nodding, and then blinked when everyone in the room gave him looks. “What?”

“Everyone’s afraid of Teacher Lan,” Jiang Cheng said. “Just, you know, not…afraid afraid. You know?”

Everyone except Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji nodded. Lan Qiren looked long-suffering about it.

“It’s a good point, though,” Nie Huaisang said. “Teacher Lan is famous for his good conduct, but also there’s his manner: he thinks about everything he says before he says it, he rarely deviates from a monotone, and even when he gets really angry, and I mean really angry, he just gets red in the face and can’t actually verbalize anything. It’s really hard to think of him as someone who’s going to kill you, rather than someone who will…I don’t know…be disappointed in you.”

“Thank you,” Lan Qiren said. “I…think?”

Wei Wuxian huffed. “Well, putting that aside,” he said. “Can we talk about it? Jiang Cheng’s not wrong about me wanting an academic conference. Can we do that next discussion conference instead of a hunt? Phoenix Mountain was great and all, but, you know…”

“We live in interesting times,” Nie Mingjue declared, rolling his eyes good-naturedly, and raised his cup. “A toast!”

“Shufu,” Lan Wangji said. His hand was at his stomach, hovering lightly over his dantian. “Do you ever…regret?”

“Not once,” Lan Qiren said. He’d known he wouldn’t be able to keep the truth from his nephews forever. “Not for a single heartbeat. Your father and I knew what we were risking, what we were doing, what it might mean for us, and we made our choice with open eyes. I regret nothing.”

He paused.

“Though perhaps I slightly regret the headaches I’m going to have once you marry Wei Wuxian in and there will be nowhere left where I will be able to retreat to in order to avoid his endless pestering…”
