Recently moved into a house with some other neurodivergent/likely autistic folks who also sign, so I thought I'd share the signs I've been looking up especially for that.
for instance, sometimes they're plugged in and I wanna let them know something in the house is going off
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or something is specifically beeping (i.e. microwave)
Tumblr media
sometimes the tv might be up a bit too loud
Tumblr media
or a particular noise is unpleasant
Tumblr media
or if one of us just wants to let the others know that we're having quiet/non-verbal time

Hello and welcome!
My name is Doom and I’m a local idiot with an interest in languages. I’m not new to tumblr (I used to have a studyblr from like 2015 to 2020, crazy to see that a lot of the people I used to know are still here!) but haven’t been on in a few years so decided to start fresh. This account will probably be a combination studyblr/langblr.
A little about me, I suppose:
pronouns:
English: it/its, ve/vir/virs
French: ael
German: xier
age:
I am over 21, so if you are younger and uncomfortable with adults, feel free to block/DNI with me! It will not hurt my feelings /gen :)
along those lines, if you do have an issue with me, feel free to reach out! or if i follow you and you don’t want me to, again, you can block me! everyone should be comfortable in their own spaces. :) /gen
miscellaneous:
INTJ
my blog is a safe space for disabled/lgbtq+/BIPOC individuals!
i function on tone indicators, so if I make an original post, it’ll be full of them (common ones i use: /gen (genuine), /nm (not mad), /j (joking), /lh (lighthearted), /gen q (genuine question), i may also include them in the tags!)
I’m disabled and have several diagnoses, but I’m only really comfortable talking about my autism! 💚
academic interests:
social sciences + humanities major -> eventual goals to become a professor
languages
medical terminology (I work in the field, so my reblogs may reflect that)
languages I know/study:
English: native
French: intermediate-level (B1/B2), have studied it for six years.
German: beginner (A0/A1), it’s my partner’s native language so I have to learn it!
Arabic: beginner, I began studying it at university a few years ago, specifically Levantine Arabic! Then COVID hit and classes were moved fully online and our prof ghosted us so I gave up for a bit :( But I want to pick it up again!
ASL: beginner, I am HoH and autistic, so I go nonverbal sometimes. My partner and I have used sign to get through those moments where I can’t speak, so it has been very useful for us. I also would love to get more involved in the d/Deaf/HoH community, so ASL is a must
languages I want to learn:
Spanish
Russian
Chinese
This list will honestly probably only get bigger as time goes on 😅
hobbies:
reading
writing
gaming
buying books and not reading them
collecting signed/exclusive editions of books
crocheting
goals:
get back into a good studying habit
review french to ensure i stay at b2-level, try to cross into c1
get to a2 level of german by the summer
build up social media accounts
og posts will be tagged: #prythianspeaks
if you want me to see your posts, tag me at: #prythianlooks
I am so glad to be back and part of the studyblr/langblr communities. This saved my studying career starting when I was 15 and inspired me to keep going. Hopefully I can spark that love for learning all over again! 💚

Today, in “I’ll take any good news I can find”:
A production of Romeo and Juliet with Deaf actors signing their lines has been referred to as bilingual! Not just “accessible” or “diverse” but also BILINGUAL!
This makes me happy because the general idea of ASL (and other signed languages) is that they’re just a manual version of the spoken language. By that logic, Norwegian is just a higher-latitude version of German. Signed languages are languages of their own! With unique vocabulary, grammar, and dialects!

Okay, so langauge side of tumblr...
I'm watching a video to try to wrap my head around the basic core structure of a sentence in American Sign Language, but I'm struggling with the way it's being explained as a "topic + comment" structure.
I'm hoping to figure out what the core word order is, because that makes the most sense to me, so let me take one of the sentence from the video I'm currently watching where she's signing that she does not like ice cream.
[Ice cream] [I] [like + negation].
In English, it's: I do not like ice cream. [I] [like + negation] [ice cream]. English is primarily a Subject, Verb, Object, or SVO language.
In Japanese, it's: 私はアイスクリームが好きではありません。 [I] [ice cream] [like + negation]. Japanese is primarily a Subject, Object, Verb, or SOV language.
So is American Sign Language primarily an Object, Subject, Verb, or OSV language?

Also as mentioned in my pinned post I’ll edit fanfics for free!!!! Cringe needs to die and I’m majoring in screenwriting so I think it’d be a lot of fun. I’ll even help brainstorm ideas if a fic is in development! I wanna help beginning writers put out the best they can. I also speak German and I’m learning asl, so if you need translations or descriptions of signs in your fic i can 100% help with that. Google translate sucks and I’ve seen so many fucked German sentences in tf2 fics lmao. So yeah just dm me if ur interested!!!

“Envision a piano. ASL is broken down into many different grammatical parameters. If you assign a different parameter to each finger as you play the piano -- such as facial expression, body movement, speed, hand shape and so on, as you play the piano -- English is a linear language, as if one key is being pressed at a time. However, ASL is more like a chord -- all 10 fingers need to come down simultaneously to express a clear concept or idea in ASL. If just one of those keys were to change the chord, it would create a completely different meaning.”

Have had little lull with my Russian and Spanish on Duolingo the last couple weeks, but just downloaded an ASL app! I got really into the alphabet and few signs in late elementary school/early middle school but never went beyond that, but I’ve always been really interested. It started in like 2nd or 3rd grade when I had to go to my older sister’s classroom before going home (I forget why she took just a little longer to get out than me) and they had an ASL alphabet poster that I would just focus on and practice every time. Then my parents got me an ASL vocab book for Christmas that I would pore over, although I only remember a couple of those signs by now. Also I never learned any grammar/how to put together a full sentence haha. (Many people think signing is just word-for-word but I’ve learned it’s not.)
I do wish it was more popular though. I remember a long time ago riding the bus somewhere and two friends were sitting apart but they were still taking across the way by signing. I remember it well bc they were blatantly looking at me and smiling/laughing while signing so pretty sure they were being dicks lmao but outside of that I was still thinking how cool it was that they could silently talk across a noisy/crowded bus. It’d be awesome if any of my friends could get into too for any situation where taking is difficult; we do go to concerts a lot haha. Also that’s just all the better for deaf/HOH people who truly need/could benefit from sign language! Signing isn’t super helpful if only deaf/HOH people know it… I worked with a girl who was congenitally deaf and even she was rusty on her ASL since it had proven to not be useful enough - she was more used to reading lips (I was thinking of her a lot when covid hit and everyone had to mask 😭).
Btw the app is PocketSign! Seemed the best option of the free options, and the cheapest of options if you decide to go paid ($6/mo, NOT charged yearly like duo or other apps…) But the unpaid option is a good deal more limited. But I just signed up for paid straight away haha.

Hello! ¡Hola! toki! !أهلا 👋
After deciding which languages I want to study over winter break, I’ve decided I’ll also try blogging my progress on tumblr! I’m new to langblr (and kinda new to tumblr), so I hope you’ll have me :)
I’m a native English speaker and I’m going to be studying Spanish, Toki Pona, Arabic, and American Sign Language for the month of December.
I’m at an intermediate level with Spanish and Toki Pona, and I’m basically completely new to Arabic and ASL. I have some resources of my own that I will talk about in future posts, but if you have any recommendations I’d be glad to hear them.
Thanks, gracias, sina pona!

started learning dansk tegnsprog (danish sign language) yesterday. it's interesting to see it is more linguistically related to lexical danish than some sign languages are to their local written language. Only an estimated 5000 people use it but by gum I will make it an estimated 5001
video ASL and Dansk Tegnsprog side by side
In other news I have written the transcripts to now 2 gilmore girls episodes in Danish lmao I don't really listen to music so translating tv shows is a very #discoverwhatmovesyou thing happening for me 😙

Does anyone else have a hobby of learning new languages, because I do. There‘s something so divinely powerful about being able to communicate with new people of course, but there‘s also some other factor at play after all one of the languages I spend my time on is Latin. I hoard them like treasures to collect. I can‘t help but to think about how much prehistory there is. How many ideas have people had that they desperately wanted to say? How many genius people were born to be philosophers, authors, inventors, poets, and scholars but were silenced by their time? So I‘ll put all of my words on display in my brain. I‘ll read and write and speak. I will let every single thought be known in every way. I will listen quietly and read with passion what every single person on this planet has to say. I constantly see people neglect their power and privilege of words and languages by limiting themselves to only one language, I will never be able to understand why.

🤟 Deaf/ASL Youtubers 🤟
when i started ASL i thought “what a shame that there’s such a lack of real and natural signing content out there” and that was simply WRONG. it takes some digging at first but it’s there! here’s some content creators i’ve come to love practicing with :)
note: im just talking about youtube in this post but there are definitely creators on other platforms too, this is just a start! also feel free to drop more channel suggestions! always looking to branch out!
Sign Duo - Ellen (hearing) and Ryan (Deaf) are a couple vlog channel (recently engaged!! <3) and their videos are entirely in sign and captioned (with Ellen usually voicing while she signs.) they answer questions and talk about ASL and Deaf culture plus just their personal everyday life! they’re my fav online couple, i could house watching, and they have a hoh dog named Java and i love her to death. personal faves! (Ryan also has a side channel where he works on cars if you happen to be into that!)
Cheyenna Clearbrook - Deaf lifestyle vlogger, videos are entirely ASL with no spoken English, almost always captioned. doesn’t teach ASL (she made a video on why!) i love her signing style even though its definitely harder for me to keep up with as a beginner, but it’s good to see the different ways to sign! entertaining, highly recommend.
Rogan Shannon - Deaf vlogger, all sign, captioned. he’s posted sign covers, he has videos just on ASL vocab/quick lessons, he talks about Deaf culture and its diversity, i personally found him through his videos on queer and black signing (though i should mention he is white). he clearly has range but i’d say right now he’s mostly a booktuber!!! he posts monthly book review videos and i wish i knew about him when i was in my booktube phase lol. signs clearly but FAST. if you like literature or social issues, he’s a darling, highly recommend.
Deafies in Drag - i mean what more do i have to say... jk, two Deaf comedy drag queens!! their content is mostly short form, things like parodies, skits, and an occasional vlog.
Bonuses!
Rikki Poynter - Deaf commentary youtuber, her videos are in spoken English not ASL though. her banner says “accessibility, disability, technology” and yeah that sums it up! honestly you can go down a rabbit hole of the projects she’s a part of and the things she fights for, if you need more Deaf perspectives in your feed (you do), check her out
Jazzy - her videos are all in sign and captioned and very entertaining, but she uses BSL so i usually spend more time on other channels to practice, but she has a great personality and deserves your support!

Rhymes not working in other languages is truly a tragedy
But at the same time, it means new rhyming possibilities when I'm speaking another language
So mixed feelings
Also is this just a me thing or are signs that are really similar the equivalent of rhyming in sign language? Just the same vibes to me
