Another day at work. You find yourself cradling books and walking down the bustling yet inspired hallways of Johnson Space Center once again.
It's a miracle to still stand in this very building, regardless of positions that you’ve held.
Moments before settling into your own office, someone clears their throat only steps away from one main threshold.
You look up from your searching for keys to see Admiral Edward Baldwin already opening the door for you.
How? Your thoughts soon panic.
“Good morning. I got keys to every door in this wing, Ms. L/N.” He mentions your last name with such clarity that it’s unfair.
“Oh. Fair enough. Thank you, Sir.” You fumble through a response, but thankfully managed to enter your office without losing sanity.
Baldwin is wearing another pristine suit for the day as this entry lanyard swings around his neck. Perfectly coiffed and blondish hair almost shimmered through all glass windows.
“No problem. Have a good day.” Ed seemingly wants to smile before walking away, but stops himself for whatever reason.
And yet, he continues standing nearby without closing your own office door behind him. Something is wrong.
“Yes?” Ed clears his throat once more, but he sounds different this time while addressing you, somehow anxious.
“Sir?” You ask this question to bring in Admiral after reorganizing your desk and stand near the frontal edge.
“Is everything all right?” You narrow both eyes, genuinely convinced that something terrible happened.
“Yes.” Baldwin lies through his teeth, but makes a point to move closer. In that moment, your own heart skips countless beats as his steps inch forward. More and more.
You then realize that the backend of your skirt has completely settled up against the front of this desk.
Baldwin? Baldwin has caged you in, nearly pressing his clothed front onto yours. Heat overwhelms this room, but neither of you have spoken. Even his spiced cologne wafted towards you, intoxicating all of your senses.
“Sir?” At last, you whisper back to him out of respect, but he shakes his head and finally glances upward to smile.
“Ed.” He reintroduces himself. His cheeks and dimples look so rosy now, the sight is adorable.
“Ed.” You repeat his first name, but smile against his lips.
“Coffee sometime?” Ed whispers in return, slyly ghosting a kiss through one low chuckle.
“Only if you leave my office today before Mr. Stevens kicks down the door.” You tease, stepping away from Ed’s dangerous lips.
“Yes Ma’am.” Ed allows himself to leave, but not before winking towards you over his shoulder.

Korean Immigration in 'Pachinko' - Book Review
Tumblr media
The cast of Apple TV Original Adaptation directed by Kogonada
'Pachinko' was without a doubt written so gracefully and seamlessly. Although there were times when I put the book down and didn’t feel so much urge to pick it up again, I still can’t deny the fact that this was one of the most well-written pieces I’ve ever read, tackling several relevant and worldly issues. Written so precisely as if these characters and the lives they’ve lived were real at some point in time, Min Jin Lee succeeds in making her readers stop and think about the world.

Kim Min-ha as Sunja, selling kimchi in the busy markets of Osaka
CHANGE
Throughout the book, we find ourselves hoping for change just as much as the characters do. It seems to be that negative change that wipes the life out of your body appears faster than lighting, and the change that everyone hopes for comes unnoticeable through time. The book proves what we should all know, which is that racism and injustices do not only occur among different races, but sometimes and for decades now, through different nationalities, gender, and social and economic status and beliefs.
That evening, when Noa did not call her, she realized that she had not given him her phone number in Yokohama. In the morning, Hansu phoned her. Noa had...

Book lll: Chapter 8 and the words that followed that line crushed my heart.
"I am carrying your child."
Page 47 of 'Pachinko'
This book made me think a lot what ifs. What if Sunja had not met Hansu? What if Isak had went to Osaka on his own? What if Noa's mother did not visit him in Nagano? Through the course of a few months, Sunja's life had took a major turn and changed everything around her, and it felt real.

Lee Min-ho as Koh Hansu in the Apple Original Adaptation of 'Pachinko'
PRIVILEGE
One recurring topic that keeps coming to me the more I read this book is privilege. Koh Hansu was not born in privilege, being a Korean and a poor one at that. But it does not excuse the amount of damage his gained privilege later in his life has caused others whom he once stood in the same economic status with.
Hansu hit the girl's face so hard that blood gushed from her pink mouth. - Noriko was ruined.
Page 344 & 345 of 'Pachinko'
Noriko was such a small character in the book (mentioned in only three pages), but it felt necessary that she was added because it made me think of the that one second you could be smiling, and the next you realize that the thing you were smiling at brought you to the hells of earth. It made me think of how much change could happen in a second while the cause of it or beholder of privilege remains unharmed.
I’d say that Pachinko isn’t much for enjoyment and excitement, but a lesson. You read it to learn in an entertaining and beautiful way about the history of Korea and Japan starting with the life of a young woman named Sunja, whose life changes drastically because of man of privilege and her decision to not fall under his power. The book covered topics I haven’t been able to encounter much yet or at all in other books, and maybe so because I need to expand my palate more, but nonetheless, this three-generational story will have you thinking and sympathizing not only for the characters but the lives and years they were inspired by in history.

Author of 'Pachinko', Min JIn Lee, at a DeMott lecture in 2019 Ahmerst College
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Min Jin Lee is no stranger to spreading political and social awareness to topics that need to be raised, whether its through her books, social media outlets, or press conferences and lectures. With her books ‘Free Food for Millionaires’ and ‘Pachinko’ both about Korean immigrants, Min Jin Lee has made her name known for giving a voice to the struggles of Asian immigration, which is scarcely tackled in the media.
"Above all, I wanted the narrator to be sympathetic of every character's plight. I will be forty-eight in November 2016, and as I get older, it is easier for me to imagine and appreciate many more perspectives--perspectives I may have disliked when I was much younger."
A Conversation with Min Jin Lee, page 494 of Grand Central Publishing's 'Pachinko'
Min Jin Lee is found admirable for all the perspectives and timelines she had to put herself through to write these sensitive topics in a historically accurate way, by interview Korean-Japanese men and women of their experiences, and taking her time to understand the weight of these stories, among others.
There is no denying that the preciseness of this book and its every line made it so beautiful and stand out from other books.

She was pretty. Oh, so pretty.
Gordo had never seen this woman before.
As framed glasses covered her deep brown eyes, fluorescent lighting beamed overhead. This woman showed an adorable smile. Students of the ASCAN program and other staff members had still loomed all throughout this famous building.
Now, the woman laughed with Danielle Poole, allowed to enter this facility because of an entry card that looped around her neck. This stranger wore a pencil skirt and hugged books towards her sweatered chest, still humored at this point.
“See you later, girl. Say hi to Clayton and Isaiah for me.” The stranger says goodbye to Danielle by offering another smile and waving to bid farewell, almost strutting in pump heels down the hallway. Even curls of short dark hair swung to and fro.
Good Lord. Gordo thinks to himself.
“Stop staring.” Out of nowhere, Ed Baldwn almost lurks his way towards Gordo and reaches out to hold his arm, backpedaling Stevens out of direct sight.
“I ain't staring. What are you talking about?” Gordo’s Southern drawl nearly chuckles through the response as Ed crosses both arms.
“What color were her eyes?” Ed questions, still not convinced by Gordo’s own answer.
“Her eyes were brown, Ed. I’m not a pervert.” Gordo defends himself without yelling out of respect for everyone around.
“All right.” Ed scopes Gordo and folds both arms once more. “What’s her name?”
“I don’t know.” Gordo admits.
“Leave her alone, then. Can’t be out here stalking people.” Ed warns his friend based on precaution.
“I’m not stupid, man.” Gordo affirms, wanting to stomp his foot in front of Ed and accent this point.
“All right. Taking your word.” Ed slaps Gordo’s clothed arm, amused once more and shaking his head.
“Is everything all right, gentlemen?” As if on cue, the stranger clears her throat and stops both from speaking at the moment.
“Oh!” Gordo turns around almost a little too fast, but stops himself from falling on his ass, especially since this stranger is standing right here. “Uh. Yes, Ma’am. Everything’s fine.”
On the other hand, Ed nearly rolls his hazel eyes before quietly acknowledging this stranger and walking away, leaving Gordo alone with her.
“Heard a lot about you, Mr. Stevens.” The stranger folds both arms and her plated name tag has replaced the entry lanyard that Gordo noticed earlier.
“Yes, Ma’am. Thank you for the support.” Without the backdrop of researching brilliant astronomy, Gordo finds himself almost stammering in this woman’s presence.
“You’re welcome. Now, sorry, but you might want to use the washer at home tonight. There’s mustard on your shirt.” the woman softly chuckles, gesturing towards the front of Gordo’s dress shirt.
Sure enough, Gordo looks down to see that mustard from his hot dog from lunch with Ed smudged out of nowhere.
Dammit. Gordo shakes his head.
“Thank you. Excuse me.” Gordo whispers, regrettably leaving this stranger behind to enter the restroom.
_________
“Smooth. Real smooth, Buddy.” Ed laughs towards Gordo near one of the sinks, but soon dries off his own hands.
“Why didn’t you tell me about mustard, Ed?” Gordo asks, echoing his voice through walls of this urinal.
“Sorry, but it’s not my job to keep you cleaned up. Plus, the smudge wasn’t even that noticeable.” Ed teases, planning to leave the restroom.
“Yeah, but she noticed. That makes a difference, y’know?” Gordo looks over his shoulder from the sink while looking towards Ed.
“Might wanna be careful, Buddy Boy. Janine ain’t for the weak.” Ed finally reveals the stranger’s name, prompting Gordo to nearly gasp.
“That’s her name?” Gordo questions his friend.
“Yeah, if you actually paid more attention to her name tag, I wouldn’t have to tell ya myself.” Ed jokes.
“Come on. It’s been a long day. Outpost with drinks on me. I’ll tell you all about her. Deal?” Ed tilts his head, hoping that Gordo would stop overthinking.
“Deal. I could use some drinks right now.” Gordo nods towards Ed from the mirror and pulls himself together, looking for upsides instead.
________
“Does she work higher up in the program or something?” Gordo is sitting across from Ed with his drink, happily starting off this anticipated conversation.
“Let me just say this: someone in her family was an astronaut years ago and she’s moved up by now.” Ed kept the response vague, knowing that spilling too much without Janine nearby would’ve been rude.
“That’s good.” Gordo smiles.
“She’s single.” Ed reveals truth and gives out this offbeat sing-song voice, speaking over his own whiskey glass. Other patrons chatted all around tonight.
“Now you’re messing with me, Ed. Sounds too good to be true.” Gordo sighs, feeling disappointed.
“Hey. Think about this: the good news is, I’ve already told her about you.” Ed winks from right across their table.
“No way.” At that moment, Gordo’s eyes widened, filled with immediate shock.
