It's not the first time - but it's probably the worst. https://archiveofourown.org/works/21307328 Oh my gosh this fic was harrowing - the Crowley whump was A+. Then the rescue was brilliantly paced. Sometimes the order of operations can get out of wack during rescue scenes but I loved every beat of it. The hugs and cuddling at the end was like the best surge of oxytocin ever. This was such a good read!

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream by theshoparoundthecorner. Rated General, 18k words, Aziracrow. Summary: When he finally drifted off, he dreamt only of a burning bookshop and the end of the world. Since then, the nightmares came nearly every night. Some nights were easier to forget than others, but it was the nights when he woke up with a scream still caught in his throat or drenched in another cold sweat that left him shaken for the rest of the day. It was far too inconvenient to go about one’s day replaying a terrible dream in one’s head, so after about two weeks, Crowley came up with a solution to his problem. Since sleeping seemed to be the cause of all his troubles at the moment, it was simple: he would just stop. Of course, stopping one’s nearly-six-thousand-year routine was easier said than done. Demons didn’t need to sleep, that much was true, but Crowley had grown rather accustomed to it, and quitting was no easy feat. Nevertheless, he did his best to keep his head held high and his eyes wide open, with one goal in mind – avoid alerting Aziraphale to anything out of the ordinary. The evil summoning felt a little bit like the beginning of Sandman which I loved. Aziraphale to the rescue is so delicious.

Brumating https://archiveofourown.org/works/22318813 Fluffy and sweet, I really love the idea of Crowley as a snake, with various habits and powers and sensitivities that all comes with it. The chronic pain aspect to explain why he moves the way he does has piqued my interest too. Really well done!

Of Dust And Diamonds by entanglednow. Rated Explicit, 14k words, Aziracrow. Summary: After they're both released by Hell for good, Crowley and Aziraphale return to the bookshop. They're both dealing with their own trauma, but they're also determined not to lose what they spent six thousand years building towards. https://archiveofourown.org/works/22288885 The way this author treated the hurt/comfort aftermath of rape in hell in this fic was so nuanced and felt very authentic. The way Aziraphale and Crowley both care so deeply for each other, and cope, and circle around each other for comfort, seeking stability and balance with each other. So so good.

"Hot" Gen or Teen fic recs please?

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with some ficrecs. See, I don't usually read G fics, and I rarely read Teen fics. I like smut, but like - not just for the smut? Porn with plot is a closer description.

I read E and M fics usually because the *emotional* hits from sexy times are more guaranteed if you know what I mean. However. I know there *can* be some searingly hot things written where there is no actual sex happening? Kinda the Jane Austen vibe I guess (although I've not read any actual Jane Austen personally - I get the jist of it).

What I'm looking for are those Gen or Teen fics that, with the way they are written - are actually super hot? Like, so much pining and longing and then a simple kiss and it's like fireworks. But because it's *only* a kiss or a hand touch or whatever it gets classified as Gen or Teen but really it would give me those brain hits that I'm looking for if I knew it was written like that.

Does anybody understand what I'm talking about here? I would love to read some of these but I have no way of knowing since I usually avoid them. Thanks if you can help

It no doubt would have continued to be fine, or at least fine-adjacent, were it not for a narrowly averted apocalypse and several bottles of a really quite nice Riesling Aziraphale had found in the back room of his newly restored bookshop.

Literally where have you been because fic recs are very much still a thing.

I think experiences differ per fandom, I know Good Omens fandom is def keeping that tradition alive. But if you look into the tags of the post you probably saw, I am most definitely not alone in the sentiment that fic rec lists are not as common as they use to be. (Some newer fans seems completely unfamiliar with the concept until they saw the post?? Which proves my point.)

Now, there are a few fic rec blogs around. And there are def some individual fic recs like "omg I just read this and it's amazing and you should go read it too", I've made a lot of those myself l, but I am not seeing nearly as many detailed curated... Actual lists as I did in the past.

Anyway. To answer your question, I've been primarily in smaller anime fandoms. (And MDZS, which DOES have a very active ficrec blog.) I think a lot of my fandoms were just smaller, and for some of them I didn't get as deep into it. But... Umm... Let's say on Lofter (CN social media for fandoms), which I also hung out on for a while, when you search for the tag of a popular ship a few fic rec lists will just come up, ya know? But when I search for my fav character or ship on tumblr, I can't find any. Probably because tumblr kills links now that I think of it. But like. I follow people in the fandom, who presumably reblogs stuff, they're also in other fandoms. I follow a lot of people! Still I've seen like... Less than 5 lists in the past 5 years and I made one of them. (There were a few author appreciation lists, but those are a tribute more to authors as opposed to a curated rec list for readers that's introducing things to readers. And it was done for a positivity event that lasted a few weeks. Not that it wasn't great, but the momentum didn't last.)

I really don't feel like I am delusional in feeling that there's been a cultural shift in fic rec culture compared to 10 years ago, back when I would find fic rec lists without even deliberately looking, just by following other active fans.

Here me out, it’s a vlogger au but stick with me. This entire series is too good and I highly recommend ALL of it. Basically it’s set after the apocalypse where Aziraphale has started a youtube channel about cooking and Crowley makes little guest appearances that makes the fans go wild. Cute right? But wait... there’s angst! Crowley’s still recovering from the apocalypse and has PTSD (see the title again) so Aziraphale tries to make him feel better with food. It’s all really cute and heart-warming and the love between them is so strong and beautiful.

Okay this one is for the hurt!Aziraphale fans (such as myself). Aziraphale doesn’t understand what panic attacks are and thinks that his corporation is just malfunctioning. He believes this for ages and just deals with it in any way he can (while trying not to alarm Crowley). It’s technically a 5 + 1 fic (with the +1 being Crowley helping him through it) but Crowley’s there a lot in the five leading up to it.

This ones just a bit on the smexy side of things, but they don’t actually do the do in this fic (it’s part of a series tho, so read those if you want). Aziraphale is an absolute sweetheart and wants to surprise Crowley by getting his own snake form. He doesn’t entirely know how to work this new corporation but tries his best. Because of that, he is accidentally super flirtatious in his movements without meaning to be. Crowley, of course, handles it about as well as he can.

Basically a Good Omens AU where they never met on the wall in Eden and don’t know each other. In the years leading up to the apocalypse, Aziraphale senses a distressed aura and goes to investigate. He finds Crowley beaten and bruised chained up on an isolated island (I think - it’s been a while). The demon also has a collar around his neck that prevents him from speaking or communicating in any written way. Obviously, Aziraphale rescues the demon and works hard to heal him. The two then start to develop a relationship and work together to find a way to get the collar off Crowley and stop the apocalypse. As per usual, things go to shit in the days leading up to the apocalypse but there’s a happy ending.

Oh my lordy this one is a good one. It’s not pure Crowley whump like my last recommendations were. There’s some really sweet moments as the two fall in love. I haven’t read it in a while, but looking back on it now... wahoo! I can remember that heart-wrenching feeling while reading it. This fic freaking DELIVERS, please read.

Every time Crowley does a blessing or miracle, he feels pain. Depending on how big or good the miracle is, it corresponds the amount of pain he feels. He doesn’t realize this until they start the Arrangement and he doesn’t want to give up his relationship with the angel so he struggles with it for as long as he can (and he really pushes himself). There is a good amount of drug and substance abuse that happens in this fic as Crowley tries to find ways to cope with his chronic pain, so fair warning about that. Of course Aziraphale is rightfully upset when he finds out.

I actually have just read this one recently and the premise was just too good to pass up ;)

How I Care for My Husband by MostWeakHamlets

A sequel to Parsley, Thyme, Sage, Daffodils that I reccomended earlier, but you don’t need to read that one first (just know the premise). It’s written as little video clips with Aziraphale narrating, showing Crowley going through a pretty intense depressive episode and Aziraphale caring for him. If you like sick-fics, this one is definitely for you. But there’s plenty of whump otherwise. It is absolutely devastating to read through it and witness just the utter pain that Crowley’s going through. 

I know vlog’s aren’t for everyone (especially on the angsty side of things) but this one is so good! The entire series is amazing, as I mentioned earlier, and this specific one is especially cathartic to read through <3

Crowley has lived a long life, he has seen humans rising and falling, stumbling along the way, and he has a lot of bad memories. After receiving the commendation for the Spanish inquisition he had gotten drunk, because he already felt sick anyway. He thought it couldn't get any worse than that. And then it did.

The first world war was also the first time he had prayed after the Fall. He asked Her why, how could this be her plan. "Ineffable",   Aziraphale said, instead of cruel. The angel was always there, in the trenches, healing men and saving as many lives as he could. But he hadn't been able to stop the war, and Crowley hadn't forgiven him that. He knew it was unfair, but he couldn't help it: not when his angel kept defending Her, as though this suffering could somehow be for the better good. He had prayed then, he had asked Her why. Why would She do this, how could She be so cruel. Now it certainly couldn't get any worse, he thought. And then it did.

The second world war had left him deeply scarred. Him, a demon, couldn't even begin to fathom the atrocities that humans had come up with. Hell had asked him if he had been responsible for it, for the first time he had denied. Not that it mattered, many demons still thought that it was all him, and that he had been humble - not for good reasons of course, but he had quite a reputation down there and more fame only meant more enemies. Though when Aziraphale had suggested that he was affiliated with those nazis...that had hurt. He was a demon, of course, but he wasn't a monster, he wasn't some kind of...of human.

He forgot about it moments later, as Aziraphale washed his feet with oil, trying to get the burn away, with something like devotion and love in his eyes. The angel loved all things, he reminded himself, it didn't mean anything that he had been caring and kind towards him: he had healed thousands of men. They had stayed together for a while then, as a tender intimacy grew between them, helped by the wine. It would have been one of his happiest memories, he had almost forgotten about everything that was happening out there, but then a telegram about the war had arrived, and suddenly the heavy weight of it all came crushing down on both of them. Except this time Aziraphale wasn't defending Her when Crowley told him that Her plan was shit, that it was wrong. His angel had stared at him, even long after he had finished talking. He had parted his lips to say something, but only a strangled sound had come out. Crowley saw it in that moment, the doubt in those blue eyes, and a chill ran down his spine. He didn't think, he acted: his hands were suddenly on Aziraphale's mouth, shutting it close. "Don't even think about it Angel," he had said, "things will change for the better, have faith."

And that's how he had found himself praying again, later that night. He couldn't sleep, he kept thinking of how unfair it was that the first time he had held Aziraphale in his arms would now always be the first time he saw him cry too. And for the first time since the Fall, he knelt. His feet still burned, it hurt to stand. So he knelt ad he begged, "Not him, please. Do not make him fall. His only fault would be an excess of love, for the creatures you made and then left alone. You can't punish him for caring, please, not him." He felt abandoned, he felt so utterly alone. She had ripped his very essence apart by denying him Her love: every fiber of his soul had been entangled with that warm affection, and She had taken it away, crushed him into pieces and put them back in the form of a snake, a monster. Aziraphale had been the first to see past that and to treat him with kindness. He wouldn't have been able to stomach it if that kindness were to be his undoing.

He had cried then, because he didn't known that his angel was there: when he felt a hand on his shoulder he found himself at a loss of words. He just turned and stared up at Aziraphale, and saw a look of certainty in his eyes. "I won't fall for loving humanity or I would have fallen a long time ago, for loving you." He had cupped his face then, brushing away a tear with his thumb with so much tenderness that he thought he would break.

Crowley has lived a long life, he has seen humanity rising and falling, stumbling along the way. He still hates Her plan, he's still enraged. He won't forgive Her, nor heaven: he won't justify all that suffering. But he won't feel dismal again, not in that all-encompassing way. It was in a desperate time that they had finally reached for each other, when the both of them had been at their lowest point; after all that's what humans had always managed to do when things seemed irredeemable: they came together and they got up, time and time again. That night he learnt that in the darkest times hope must shine brighter, he had never been alone after all.

Good Omens Fic Recs

My AO3 bookmarks are getting full, and my favorite thing is always finding stuff that deserves to be read more. Here are a few favorite fics that are apparently lesser-known, with fewer than 300 Kudos, but deserving of zillions more.* Maybe you’ll like ‘em too: Someplace You Belong by Aethelflaed -- a beautiful sad pre-Eden backstory for Aziraphale that has become headcanon (and a follow-up to the fabulous Early Days, a heartrendingly beautiful take on the first few years after Eden)

London Calling by forthegreatergood -- an interlude from the end of the Cold War that was full of characterization language/dialogue so brilliant I want to cross-stitch it and put on my wall.

The Akashic Records by PeniG -- I can’t believe this isn’t more widely read, it’s amazing work. Its lore is vast and fascinating but here and here are interesting drop-in places to get a feel for whether you’ll enjoy the whole thing.

Five Hundred Ways to Discorporate a Demon by Lise -- Crowley discorporates a lot. Earth is a learning experience. This made me laugh so hard.

Stans in High Places by doomed_spectacles -- lucky for our heroes the worker bee angel reviewing their surveillance files is starting to root for them.

New Life by caricari -- A grown-up Adam POV fic that slays me with its snapshot in time beauty. Adam and Crowley with a newborn baby having serious talks in the kitchen while the reunion party goes on in the other room -- it’s so soft. This author’s Better for Snakes is also wonderful.

Sauntering Vaguely Downwards by GenericUsername01 -- my favorite take on the creation story, the fall, and Aziraphale’s origin, focusing on the archangels. It leads into the unfinished One Upon a Time (6023 Years) which is weird and wonderful, I can’t wait for more.

Clementine by Mussimm -- cottage neighbors AU with alllll the pining and ineffable idiocy.

So I tried drawing that scene from Chapter 11 of Slow Show by the obscenely skilled @mia-ugly .

I’ve been a complete wreck for this AU from the start, and this part ruined me in the loveliest way. 
It’s impossible to adequately thank Mia for inviting us along on this journey and for the generosity in gifting the time to craft such a living, breathing, extraordinarily real world. I can't even imagine the hours that were poured into it.  I have so. many. feeeeelings about this absolute masterwork, but want to take the time to properly put them into words- for now I’ll only say that this story has been a certain light amongst the usual mess of life, and a profoundly healing one. I’m going to be re-reading it forever.

The gratuitous use of sparkles was an accidental side effect of my incandescent feelings - I looked up and the glittery lights had drawn themselves in. Am I sorry? Alas! I am not- these two deserve all the shiny things, always.

I may have mentioned a time or 3 that I’ve been consuming a tonne of Good Omens fan fic over the past couple of months. It’s been my intention to share my favs for almost as long (this goes for art and eventually podfic too) ... but I couldn’t make up my mind the best way to do it. This morning I decided that it’s easier for me to do this over on AO3 ... and now I’m organising bookmarks, making lists, creating categories etc so that I can begin to post my GO fic recs. It makes the most sense to me as that is where I’ll be posting my own fan fic, and podfics too. Hello! Question: So every fic you've posted has been like amazing. I have yet to be disappointed. The Stars Walk Backwards and Golden Handcuffs just came out of no where and I was wondering if there are anymore fics you can recommend?

Notes: Written by my exquisite friend @omgmussimm  who bad at taking compliments. This is one of the very best Human AUs out there. They're middle aged, they're terrible talking about feelings, and it's beautifully soft. One of my all time favourites.

Aziraphale is a rich android with specific needs. Crowley is a broke human whose friends are just awful. Perhaps they can help each other out.

Notes: This cyberpunk AU knocked me out. It's everything I didn't know I wanted.

The best way I can describe this is a sort of reverse human dance au. With lots of smut.

Aziraphale was attracted to him from that first encounter. The way his cheeks had blushed, the way the blush had crept down his neck. It was completely inappropriate to desire a student in this way, but Aziraphale found he could not stop. It would be alright; nothing would ever come of it. It was not as if a man as beautiful as Crowley would be interested in Aziraphale’s has-been body; the soft roundness of his stomach, the padding of fat over the muscles of his thighs. But oh, how we wanted. Crowley always stayed after to chat, asked Aziraphale questions about himself, seemed to be genuinely interested in him. It was all just fuel for the growing fire.

Notes: A fully realized AU in a scant 7k words. I've been obsessed since my first read. I would read many thousands more words of it.

Rough Enough for Love by Nekhen

“So, let me get this straight,” Crowley said, dragging that r a little for best effect. “Your librarian asks for an escort, and the first person you think of is me?”

Notes: WIP - I'm wild for this Human AU. Written entirely from Crowley's POV, Nekhen goes to the very depth of why Crowley is the way he is, and you ache right along with him. Nekhen is an accomplished a skilled writer, one I'm so happy to have stumbled across. The summary does not capture how thoughtful and thorough this story is.
