It’s interesting how tommy takes not the position of a father in his family but the position of the older brother. There was a Steven knight interview where he said something about making the relationships between the shelbys more unique by giving them unusual familial roles (polly being an aunt instead of a mother leaves a lot more space for playing with her relationship with Tommy, they are siblings, they are partners, they are aunt and nephew, they are parents, etc). And tommy being a middle child instead of the oldest child is also an interesting choice that plays into this decision I think. The way it makes his ascension less… natural I would say. If you read the script for the first episode or watch the first season closely, it’s clear that he wasn’t always in such a position. He is in the process of overpowering Arthur there, of taking the lead from polly as well. His relationship with ada and John is more normal than the rest of the shelbys is partly because of the fact that he is actually older than them. I don’t know what it all means but it’s definitely there somewhere. And Tommy’s relationship with his father plays into the equation, as well as the fact that it was Arthur who had the arc with Arthur sr, not Tommy. Like, the responsibility and guilt that Tommy feels for his family isn’t strictly parental. He is a substitute for the father (like John says in s1 to Arthur sr) but only in name. In reality he’s something else.

I have seen more disabled people in my favorite 80s shows then the modern ones i watch.

#personal #80s television #Micheal Knight had PTSD from being shot in the face #The A-team had PTSD from the war #there was episodes with people in wheelchairs and blind #and one with a little girl who needed a bone morrow doner #Ralph Hinkley broke down from the stress of the suit and trying to live his life #Macgyver had trauma had him avoiding guns like the plague #In more modern shows i've watched the characters barely even seem to grieve even if their spouses or parents #and murdered right in front of them and die in their arms #by the next scene they're right back to work pretty much #I'm sure there is some commentary or explanation or something #that could explain all this #but i don't know what it is #i just noticed this and went 'huh.'
